FEATURED TRIPS

Grasslands extend to a horizon of cobalt-blue skies, pastel-hued rocks color the Gobi Desert and fast-flowing rivers cut deep canyons in arid steppes in this remote Asian nation land-locked between China and Russia. The people, descendants of Genghis Khan, are an eclectic mix of rugged nomads, Buddhist monks, farmers and merchants. For the truly adventurous, Mongolia holds the promise of an exotic culture rarely visited by travelers. Starting in Ulaanbaatar, the tour uses the capital as a hub to visit the Gobi Desert, Lake Hovsgol and central Mongolia. In the Gobi, we visit the Flaming Cliffs, a world-class dinosaur site with remains so plentiful that dinosaur eggshells can still be found on the surface. The highlight for many is the famous Naadam Festival. Full of ceremony, pomp and festive Mongolians, this event features the "Three Sports of Men" - archery, wrestling and horse racing. Our Mongolian odyssey concludes in Ulaanbaatar.    Click here   for more information!

Albania, Macedonia & Bulgaria

Welcome to Old Europe - remote, unexploited and unspoiled. With cobblestone streets, Roman ruins, cosmopolitan cities, quaint towns, medieval monasteries and castles, UNESCO sites and pristine nature.  Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania are easily some of Europe's last, mostly unexplored gems. We also visit Kosovo, the youngest country of Europe, and Corfu (Greece).  After exploring the 5,000 year old cosmopolitan capital city Sofia, with its wide boulevards and grand churches, we travel to the city of Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest cities. Visit Asenovgrad Castle, a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains. Bulgaria, Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania offer the perfect off-the-beaten track adventure in seldom traveled Eastern Europe.   Click here  for more information!

Papua New Guinea

adventure travel for older singles

Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally interesting places on Earth, with many of its tribal people following a traditional lifestyle. This adventure has been designed to experience the villages and people of Papua New Guinea. In order to do this, we visit a number of local villages and we have 2 overnights in one village. There are overnight stays where the accommodation is very basic; it can be dormitory style and have no fans/air conditioning and very limited facilities. As much of the interior of the country has no roads or impassable ones, we maximize our time by flying from location to location and flight schedules frequently change. While we endeavor to do/see everything listed in the itinerary, it is common for changes to occur to the itinerary for things that are beyond our control. Traveler must be prepared for changes to this program, either before your journey starts or during the trip itself.   Click here  for more information!

Beginning in Hartbeespoort, we visit the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Center before traveling to world-famous Kruger National Park in search of the "Big Five" - lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos. Our three-country journey concludes in stunning Cape Town, the perfect place to raise a glass of South African wine with a toast to this superb adventure.  Click here  for more information!

Journey to one of the most diverse regions of Europe - Croatia and Slovenia. Our adventure begins in Dubrovnik, Croatia. We will visit seaside towns with roots from the Middle Ages, and even as far back as Roman times. Relive history during the walk along the medieval walls of Dubrovnik, a fascinating and fabled city also known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic", and enjoy the magnificent landscape, culture, cuisine and hospitality of the locals.  Our trip to the Adriatic Coast, Bosnia and Montenegro is a relaxing blend of walks and hikes to natural wonders and historic sites. 14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

adventure travel for older singles

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

Vacations for Over 50 Singles: How and Where to Travel

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 17/02/2024

Traveling alone can be intimidating, especially if you’ve reached your 50s and have never traveled alone. I took my first solo trip when I was 35, fell in love with travel, and never looked back.

Planning trips for singles over 50 can be overwhelming. Where do you go? Who do you go with? And what should you be adding to your travel itinerary on a day-to-day basis?

I’m here to help you with ideas on how to plan vacations for singles over 50. If you’re not quite there yet, be sure to check out my travel tips for singles over 40 .

You may be heading abroad by yourself, but there’s no need to feel alone in this venture. I’ve been doing it for years and encountered the most incredible experiences because of it.

Here’s what you need to know about the best trips for singles over 50.

BEST SOLO TOUR OPERATOR FOR OVER 50s: Short on time? You can’t go wrong with Explore which has a section dedicated to over 50s solo travel on their website.

Top Tips for Vacations for Over 50 Singles

There are a variety of challenges that present themselves when you’re traveling as a single person over the age of 50. Here are a few travel options that could make the whole experience less stressful.

1. Join Organized Travel Groups for Singles Over 50

Top 3 organized tour companies for over 50 solo travelers.

Encounters Travel ✔️ Private & Small Group Focus ✔️ 20 Years Experience ✔️ Range of Tours

Organizing an entire trip alone can be stressful if you’re not the planning type. But the good news is that you don’t have to do it alone.

You may not have to do it at all. For those who are not great planners, joining already organized travel groups for singles over 50 is a great way to go.

There are plenty of companies that allow you to book all-inclusive trips. Flights, accommodation, activities, and sometimes even your meals are included. This takes all the pressure off of you.

I have traveled solo with G Adventures and Explore several times and always had a great experience. The age range of attendees is very broad but single travelers account for the majority of people who travel with both companies.

G Adventures does not charge a single supplement, makes it easy to get your own room and is particularly focussed on female solo travelers.

Explore has a dedicated section on its website for Over 50s solo holidays that covers everything you need to know about its most popular solo trips for this age group.

Solo Female Travelers Club is a community of more than 90,000, run by the fantastic travel bloggers Meg and Mar. The heart of the community is their Facebook group, which has some great information and is the perfect way to meet other females interested in traveling solo.

Meg and Mar also run female-only small group tours that range from luxury retreats to adventurous expeditions in some awesome locations.

Intrepid Travel has more than 1000 itineraries and covers over 100 countries. They also have different comfort levels for their trips – Basix, Comfort or Original which is a combination of the two.

Again, if you are willing to share your room, there is no single supplement and the cost for a private room is relatively small.

Intrepid says that about half of the people on their trips are traveling solo . Like Explore, they have a dedicated section for solo travelers on their website and versions of their trips designed specifically for singles for popular destinations like Costa Rica and Peru.

Encounters Travel is an Australian based travel company that designs its trips exclusively for solo travelers. One of their key points of difference is that Encounter Travel promises small groups of travelers of similar age groups.

For American solo travelers, Overseas Adventure travel focuses on solo travelers over 50. As you may have guessed from the name, many of their trips are quite adventurous. However, they provide detailed information on the trips and the fitness levels required to ensure you find the trip that works for you.

This company puts aside a certain number of single spaces for each of its tours. These spaces mean that solo travelers either aren’t charged for a single supplement or it is at a discount. Overseas Adventure Travel has a roommate matching service if those spaces are filled.

If you want to travel with other females and have an adventure, check out Wild Women Expeditions . This company focuses on destinations that may be daunting for a female solo traveler such as Tanzania or getting to say Alaska and getting around. The focus of their itineraries is outdoor adventures.

And Just You travel is specifically designed for singles travel.

2. Plan a Group Trip

Being single doesn’t mean you have to travel alone. Plenty of people well into their 50s are keen to explore the world and looking for a travel buddy. If reaching out to your friends proves unsuccessful, venture into an online community.

These often come in the form of Facebook groups that allow you to chat about your travel plans and meet up with others who are planning the same thing. Three that I recommend are:

  • Solo Travel Society
  • Girls About the Globe – Solo Female Travel
  • Solo Female Travelers – First FB Group for female solo travelers

3. Travel Alone

Traveling alone comes with many perks. The main one is that you never have to compromise. Do what you want to do, when you want to do it. And if you decide you’d like to extend your trip by a week or two, or even a couple of months, you won’t interrupt anyone else’s schedule.

It’s actually one of the most liberating things to do. Whether you decide on a solo spa break or an adventurous year-long globe-trotting trip, you will end it feeling fulfilled.

Where to Travel in Your 50s

With a little extra cash in your pockets than you had in your 20s, traveling in your 50s can be even more exciting than when you were younger. You can finally get to all the places you intended to go to.

If you’ve been to all the destinations on top of your bucket list, I’ve got a few more for you to consider.

After all, your tastes change as you get older. A full moon party in Thailand might not be the epic adventure you once envisioned, but there’s plenty more on offer. So here are some of the best 50s-friendly travel destinations.

Japan is famed for its traditional arts, distinctive gardens, and numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you’re visiting to see the awe-inspiring cherry blossoms in full bloom, visiting during April is a must.

These are a few of the top things to do in Japan.

Take Part in a Tea Ceremony

A tea ceremony in Kyoto is all you need for a relaxing start to your trip. Learn about traditional Japanese teas and the process used to make them during the ceremony. Once the tea master has demonstrated matcha tea preparation (a powdered green tea), you’ll make it for yourself.

You’ll also learn about the spiritual benefits of drinking matcha tea while you savor every last drop.

Scenic Train Ride

Take a scenic train ride alongside the Hozu River. The views are spectacular as you pass through mountains in the Hozukyo Ravine. During the trip you’ll get a chance to hop off and sail down the Hozu River in a boat, providing you with views from a completely different angle.

Taking a train through Japan is possibly the best and most relaxing way to enjoy the country’s incredible scenery. Some other fantastic options in Japan are to spend a day in Tokyo , visit beautiful Kanazawa or take the Nakasendo Trail .

2. Antarctica

Antarctica may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of vacation destinations for your 50s, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a desirable option.

Take a Cruise

Take a voyage through the icy water of the Antarctic to experience what few others have. These voyages are usually all-inclusive, which takes a lot of strain out of the planning. Most of them allow for a stop off at some point, so you won’t just witness the ice, you’ll experience it first hand.

You’re likely to see a myriad of wildlife you won’t find anywhere else in the world and few have ventured to see. The Antarctic holds a variety of unique adventures that, in your 50s, you have to experience.

⇒ There are some other destinations that I have visited that I think are particularly good for solo travelers over 50 due to their friendliness and safety levels. Some of my favourites are New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada, Medellin in Colombia, Verbier in Switzerland , Iceland , Riga in Latvia , Edinburgh and Glasgow , Bali , Nepal and Melbourne , Sydney and Perth in Australia.

3. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is home to 6% of the world’s biodiversity, making it one of the best places to go for wildlife viewing. But if you’re still young at heart, it’s also one of the best places to go for a heart-pumping adventure.

See the Natural Beauty of the La Fortuna Area

Trek along the trails of La Fortuna , visit an aboriginal village, hike over lava fields, and come to the best viewing point in the La Fortuna area. Take in the stunning views of the cascading 70-metre high waterfall and make your way across a suspension bridge.

All the while taking in the wonderful diversity of the lush vegetation surrounding you. This is certainly an experience for nature-lovers, although most of Costa Rica is.

Spend a Night in the Jungle

Taking a tour of the jungle at night is even more exciting than it is during the daytime. All of your senses are heightened. Hear sounds of the nocturnal creatures, and maybe even spot a few glowing eyes in the darkness.

You’ll venture deep into the rainforests of Rainmaker Park where species that were previously thought to be extinct are being rediscovered. Your naturalist guide will point out snakes, frogs, salamanders, lizards, owls, birds, and many other wonderful nocturnal creatures.

Zipline Through the Rainforest

For those of you who are still hungry for adventure and an adrenaline rush, ziplining through the rainforests of Costa Rica has to be on your itinerary.

To get there you’ll enjoy a scenic drive through volcanoes, plantations, and the jungle, taking in all Costa Rica has biodiversity.

You’ll then zip-line through the jungle, seeing waterfalls and stopping off at the Arenal Volcano hot springs along the way.

4. Scotland

A colourful history has left Scotland with castles and military fortresses all over the country. It has also kept up with the times and has some fantastic food (and of course whiskey) and some great spas.

If you’re ready to explore thick woodlands, rolling farmlands, and a destination with a fascinating story, Scotland is waiting for you.

best things to do in scotland highlands

Take a Cruise on the Caledonian Canal

Ready to explore the home of the Loch Ness Monster? The Caledonian Canal is a tranquil body of water that provides stunning views of the surrounding area. Taking a cruise on the Caledonian Canal provides you with views of the beautiful Great Glen, as well as long-standing Aldourie Castle.

Explore Underground Vaults

If you like to dive head-first into a destination’s history, exploring the vaults under Edinburgh’s Old Town is a must. These vaults were built in the 18th century and held murderers and witches.

You’ll even see the location where “witches” were persecuted all those years ago.

edinburgh-vaults

If you like all things dark and creepy or are fascinated by the customs of years gone by, this is a tour you cannot pass up in Scotland.

Visit Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is one of the most popular fortifications in the country. The castle has been around for over 3000 years and helped shape the history of Scotland. Take a tour of the castle to learn about its hidden mysteries.

A guide will teach you everything you need to know about the history of the castle and take you to the must-see locations in the fortress. After that, you can set out to explore for yourself.

Scotland is a great place to hire a car as a solo traveler and explore less visited areas like Ayrshire or Dumfries and Galloway. Glasgow is a super friendly town and a great spot for single travelers. I would highly recommend having at least 7 days or 10 days in Scotland.

Looking for some Luxury on your Solo Vacation?

If you’re looking for more luxurious singles vacations over 50 options check out the fantastic Girls Guide to Paris.  Girls’ Guide to Paris & Beyond is a boutique female-owned company specializing in solo-travel for women-only.

Doni says, “Girls’ Guide to Paris & Beyond is an invitation to travel with me in a small group (no more than 12) and explore another part of the world while we explore another part of ourselves.” And they have a pretty impressive range of 5 stars only reviews on TripAdvisor.

Sit back and watch the lush Andean scenery as you wind your way through the Sacred Valley. Plus, there’s no FOMO from skipping the Inca Trail trek because your fellow adventurers are right there with you.

Our tour suggestion: Explore Machu Picchu

2: Feel safe the whole time

Why you’ll love being with a group: No matter your age, one of the biggest concerns around solo travel is safety. With us, not only do you get the security of the group but we guarantee you won’t turn up at a questionable hotel that gives you the heebie jeebies. Plus, you’re not tethered to your fellow travellers. With plenty of built-in free time, you can strike out on your own and return to share your discoveries with the group later.

From our 50+ community: “I am in my early 60s and did my first G Adventures trip last year solo and loved it. This year I have already booked 2 tours back to back travelling solo.”

Where to go: Explore South Africa with peace of mind as you wine taste in Cape Town, cycle Soweto in Johannesburg, and search for the “big five” in Kruger National Park. If you do want to explore solo, your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) has plenty of tips on which areas are safe, how to get around, and ways to keep in touch if needed.

Our tour suggestion: Cape Town, Kruger & Zimbabwe

3: Your CEO is here to help

Why you’ll love being with a group: Having a CEO with you every step of the way means they can pitch in on any issues that may come up. (Or even just snap that lasting memory of you taking in the sights.) They can help you replace lost items and handle special requests whether it be mobility issues, dietary issues, or help seeking medical attention. Plus, they are super good at pep talks when you need a little push to reach a vista point.

From our 50+ community: “[G Adventures] adapts well to individuals’ needs. I had mobility issues before I got both knees replaced and they made things work for me.”

solo50 pic

Where to go: The islands of Bali and Lombok can only be described as super dreamy. Luckily, with your CEO leading the way, you can embrace adventure in all its forms knowing they have your back. You’re in the ideal location for cycling around the islands, snorkelling, and hiking — so bring it all on with gusto!

solo50 pic

Our tour suggestion: Classic Bali & Lombok

4: A trusted local guide

Why you’ll love being with a group: Your CEO is not only there to help, but also to show you the very best time in their home country. While they get you from point A to point B and all the stops in between, they’ll regale you with stories, facts, and insights you won’t get from a guidebook. The best part of a local guide is their local knowledge — and you'll have the best of the best at your side.

From our 50+ community: “I am a mature woman who has done 12 trips mostly on my own, with G Adventures. The CEOs make it easy and I have always made friends with my fellow travellers! Go with confidence and have fun.”

solo50 pic

Where to go: Just because you can travel around Italy on your own, doesn’t mean you should. As you move from Catania to Palermo, you’ll learn more about Southern Sicilian culture, traditions, history, and food than you thought possible. Top it off with a hands-on arancini cooking class or a soak in a hidden cove pointed out by your CEO.

solo50 pic

Our tour suggestion: Explore Southern Sicily

5: Stress-free travel

Why you’ll love being with a group: Are there three sweeter words in the English language than “stress-free travel”? At home, the responsibilities are endless but the beauty of small group travel is that once you meet up with your group, you don’t need to think about anything else. Tickets to must-see sights? We can help. Transport strikes? We deal with it. Language barriers? We speak it. Your job is to put all of your energy into having the time of your life.

From our 50+ community: “I’m 67 and have been on 4 solo G Adventures trips and planning another this summer. I’ve been among the oldest, but certainly not the least capable! Just go… no regrets!”

solo50 pic

Where to go: With a culture that highly respects their elders, Thailand is the perfect destination for seasoned travellers. There’s more to this beautiful country than the full-moon parties, so get busy learning about local customs, exploring the bustling streets, and feeling completely at peace.

Our tour suggestion: Classic Thailand - West Coast

Before traveling to a new destination, it’s important to research the area thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with local customs, laws, and potential safety concerns. Reading travel advisories, reviews, and recommendations can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions.

4. Choose Well-Reviewed Accommodations

When selecting accommodations, opt for well-reviewed hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals. Look for places that prioritize safety and have positive feedback from fellow travelers. Check for security features such as well-lit entrances, secure locks, and 24-hour front desk service.

5. Be Aware of Local Customs and Safety Precautions

Respect and adhere to local customs and traditions wherever you travel. By being aware of local norms, you can avoid potentially unsafe situations and show respect to the local culture. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the safety precautions recommended for the destination, such as avoiding certain areas or taking precautions against pickpocketing.

6. Consider Traveling in Groups or Joining Guided Tours

For added safety and peace of mind, consider traveling in groups or joining guided tours specifically designed for seniors. Traveling with a group provides an additional layer of security, companionship, and the expertise of knowledgeable guides. It also offers the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and share memorable experiences.

7. Remain Vigilant and Trust Your Instincts

While exploring new destinations, always trust your instincts and remain vigilant. Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas. If something feels unsafe or uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation. Your intuition can often guide you towards making the right decisions for your safety.

Remember, solo senior travel can be an incredibly rewarding and empowering experience. By considering these safety tips and taking necessary precautions, you can confidently embark on your solo adventures and create lifelong memories.

Choosing the Right Tour for Solo Seniors

When it comes to selecting a tour for solo seniors, there are several important factors to consider. By taking the time to evaluate your travel preferences and match them with the right tour options, you can ensure a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect tour:

  • Consider your travel preferences: Think about what type of travel experience you prefer. Do you enjoy a more structured itinerary or do you prefer more flexibility and freedom? Consider if you prefer group activities or if you enjoy time alone to explore at your own pace.
  • Assess activity levels: Take into account your physical capabilities and choose a tour that matches your activity level. Some tours may involve extensive walking or hiking, while others may be more relaxed and leisurely.
  • Check accommodations: Look into the quality and accessibility of accommodations provided by the tour. Ensure that they meet your comfort and safety needs.
  • Evaluate group size: Consider if you prefer a smaller or larger group. Smaller groups can often provide a more intimate and personalized experience, while larger groups may offer more opportunities to connect with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Research expert tour guides: Find out about the expertise and knowledge of the tour guides. Experienced guides can enhance your travel experience by providing valuable insights and information about the destinations.
  • Read reviews and recommendations: Take the time to read reviews and recommendations from other travelers who have taken the tours you are considering. Their experiences can provide valuable insights into the quality and suitability of the tour.

By considering these factors and doing thorough research, you can select a tour that matches your preferences and ensures a memorable travel experience. Remember, choosing the right tour is essential for enjoying a solo senior adventure that caters to your unique needs and interests.

  • Best for True Solo Travel: Black Tomato
  • Best for Ages 25-39: For The Love of Travel

Best Experience : Exodus Travels

Courtesy of Exodus Travels

Traveling solo on an Exodus Travels group trip means access to self-guided and guided excursions around the world for every type of traveler. Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.

There is no single supplement fee when you room with a fellow traveler, and chances are you may end up with your own room anyway. Booking a travel itinerary with UK-based Exodus Travels includes a full refund should the company need to cancel your trip and a complimentary trip transfer to another tour or different person up to 21 days before the scheduled trip. Plus, travelers who book their third or more trips with Exodus receive a 5 percent discount on their next booking.

What’s more, the company works to curate trips that align with a number of United Nations sustainable development goals including goals for responsible consumption and production, empowering local communities, and climate action considerations. Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.

Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel

Courtesy of Encounter Travel

According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.

All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Best Sustainable : G Adventures

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.

Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.

A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.

G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Courtesy of G Adventures

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

Courtesy of Contiki

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Courtesy Flash Pack

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

Whether you’re looking to embark on a new journey on your own, or are a seasoned solo traveler on the lookout for a new destination, read below for the best cities to travel for singles over 60.

exploring the riverfront of Porto

Perhaps best known for their port-wine production, Porto is Portugal’s second largest city and features the Douro River which runs through the center of the city.

Be sure to visit the best viewpoint in the city at the Dom Luís I bridge. Whether it’s the daytime or nighttime, catch the stunning view of the cathedral, historic buildings, and the Douro River itself. Stroll down the Cais da Ribeira, a photogenic promenade that hugs the Douro River. With a vibrant evening atmosphere, discover exciting street performers, eclectic restaurants, and neat shops.

Take a nature walk at the Jardins do Palácio De Cristal. Situated on the city’s hilltop, it’s a spectacular landscaped park with a stunning botanical garden, lovely pathways, and magnificent views.

With Porto’s divine culinary scene, single travelers can join a food and wine tasting tour to sample the city’s best delicacy in a social setting.

singles weekend getaway to Boston

Boston is notable for their outstanding seafood and rich history. In the heart of the downtown lays the historic meeting hall known as the Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Stop by this urban complex with artisan crafts, quirky shops, food stalls, and buzzing street performers.

Take a break at the Boston Common, the oldest public park in the city. Located near downtown, this green space is an excellent option for solo travelers to enjoy a picnic on the benches, take a nature walk, or admire the surrounding scenery of the pond and trees. Don’t miss the adjacent Public Garden for a view of manicured gardens and an array of lovely flowers.

Pop by the grand Central Library to admire the stunning Renaissance-style architecture and impressive murals that date back to 1873, or visit the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum for a history lesson via an interactive experience led by costumed interpreters.

solo trip for women to Scotland

The capital of Scotland is the perfect city for a solo trip consisting of beautiful stone architecture, the striking Medieval Old Town, and rich cultural landmarks.

Head over to the Old Town, where you can wander through the narrow passages and admire the beautiful historical monuments, delightful shops and quaint cafes.

While in the heart of the city, you’ll also encounter The Royal Mile. This magnificent stretch of road is the main thoroughfare that connects the Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood. When you reach the Edinburgh Castle, take a step back in time as you explore this cultural icon that dates back to the 11th century.

Escape to a tranquil paradise right in the city, at the Princes Street Gardens. Stroll through the massive urban park to admire the scenic surroundings filled with monuments, flower beds, and a spectacular view of Edinburgh Castle.

city skyline in Singapore

Singapore is noted for their spectacular green landscape and cleanliness.  Singapore is extremely safe for a big city, which is part of the reason it is a popular destination for people in their 60’s who are traveling alone.

In the heart of downtown lies the Gardens by the Bay, a massive nature park that spans across 250 acres. Wander through the majestic gardens, which feature an extensive collection of over 1.5 million plants!

Don’t miss the Cloud Forest section which showcases a soaring waterfall surrounded by dense vegetation, and the Singapore Botanical Gardens park which is a peaceful tropical oasis.

Single travelers can explore the city’s architecture and catch a glimpse of the city skyline with an evening walk through the Marina Bay promenade. For a complete panoramic, head up to the SkyPark Observation Deck where you can catch the soaring views from the 57th floor.

historic trips for singles over 60

Though Utrecht is a larger city with excellent amenities, it also offers the charm of a smaller town. This medieval city in the Netherlands consists of lovely canals, well-preserved ancient architecture, and a quaint ambiance that is ideal for exploring by foot.

Take a leisurely stroll by the old canal in the city center, and admire the picturesque backdrop, the ancient houses, as well as the cafes and shops. If you prefer to venture out onto the actual canals, kayak and boat rentals are available.

For a unique museum choice, head over to the Museum Speelklok, a unique haven for antique automated musical instruments. You’ll discover musical clocks, musical boxes, and the classic Dutch street organ.

If you’re visiting in season, stop by the Bloemenmarkt, a local street bursting with vibrant and colorful flower of all types. Utrecht’s charming city center, intriguing museums, and unique character all make it a fantastic destination for single travelers over 60.

15 Soft Adventure Travel Ideas for Baby Boomers

A dventure travel is a hot travel niche these days, one of the fastest-growing segments of the travel industry in recent years.  For many Baby Boomer travelers, myself included, it trends a little more to the soft adventure rather than the rugged, hard adventure activities we may previously have enjoyed.

Those busy adventure days are often followed by a glass of good wine, a good meal, and a comfy bed (bonus when it’s luxury accommodations). My needs are simple – some active travel and adventure, right along with a little luxury travel, too.

Here are some of the best ways to enjoy soft adventure tourism right now, whether you’re staying close to home here in the United States or venturing further afield.

1. Ziplining

A decade or so ago, the only place I knew where you could go zip lining was in the rainforest or exotic destinations. Now it’s gone mainstream. You’ll find zipline adventures offered at all-inclusive resorts, tourist destinations, cruise ships, zoos, eco-lodges, urban areas, and more. You might be surprised to see opportunities offered in the middle of the city where you live, or somewhere close by.

If you’ve never tried it before, ziplining should be on your bucket list . The adrenaline rush that comes with it and the feeling of ultimate freedom can make for a great adventure. I wanted to love ziplining, but it is one of those experiences that just isn’t for me. I have a fear of edges and the anxiety involved in taking the first step off the platform is paralyzing. The time between platforms is exhilarating – that part I love – I just can’t take that first step.

No matter where you are, or where you are traveling, you can find tour operators that offer zip lining experiences.

2. Horseback Riding

It’s not just a trail ride down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon anymore. You can ride horses in different destinations, from a ride in the park, in the hills, or on the beach. And let’s not underestimate the pure enjoyment of a relationship between you and your horse.

A desert sunrise ride can be a meditative experience, and a ride through vineyards is a fun way to combine outdoor adventure with wine tasting. Dude ranches aren’t a City Slicker experience. This niche of the tourism industry now offers authentic ranch experiences right along with delicious food and comfortable lodging. Why not opt to combine a sightseeing adventure or eco-tourism with a horseback ride so you can leave motorized vehicles behind? Or enjoy a ride on the beach that may turn into a splash in the ocean thanks to special equipment.

3. Viewing Wildlife

Safari holidays aren’t just in Kenya anymore. You can choose a wildlife adventure in Africa, Asia, Oceania, or South America . From a savannah safari on the Serengeti, Tanzania, to whale watching in Kaikoura, New Zealand, to enjoying penguins in the Galapagos Islands, the possibilities to see wildlife in a natural environment have become plentiful.

This adventure travel option has become very popular with affluent baby boomers with high disposable income. These are often once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences with price tags to match. Some tours have higher activity levels required, while others have a slower pace, so make sure your choice matches up with your preferred  travel plans .

Do your research and due diligence, get recommendations from friends, and find a safari or wildlife tour that creates your perfect balance of price and  memorable  experience. We’re at the beginning stage of planning for a safari, and we’ll be tapping on the expertise of friends as we start the process.

While many Baby Boomers may be past the point of wanting a white-water rafting category 4 or 5, there are still lots of fun recreational rafting options. Whether it’s float trips, rafting wine trips, enjoying one of the national parks, or just cooling off on the water, this is a great way to have a soft adventure vacation.

Rafting trips can be an afternoon break or multi-day trips with camping and free time at the end of the day on the river. Experience isn’t generally required, and guides are trained to navigate in a way that provides an enjoyable experience. Some participants will man the paddles, while others are just along for the ride. Warning, though, just like those amusement park rides, you may get wet

5. Kayaking and Canoeing

For a more do-it-yourself day on the water, kayaking and canoeing can appeal to different age groups. Some skill is involved, although I consider it more practice than expertise. If you’re in a tandem kayak, there’s a fair amount of patience required, especially if you and your partner have different experience levels.

This is another adventure activity that may not require you to go too far from home. Kayaks and canoes are becoming increasingly affordable for home use, and if you live near a lake, river, or other body of water, buying a kayak or canoe can be a good vacation expenditure.

We’ve kayaked on a shore excursion on a cruise in the Norwegian fjords and as part of a small ship cruise in Panama. We’re not good at it, and there are occasional squabbles, but we still think it’s fun and get better at it every time. Give it a try, this might be a new activity that you’ll enjoy.

One of the simplest soft adventure activities is hiking. You can hike nearly anywhere and in almost any type of weather, although let’s be honest, hiking in the rain kind of sucks. Specialized equipment isn’t needed, although I recommend a sturdy pair of shoes if you’re logging any distance or dealing with uneven terrain.

You can hike around the block, in a park, or find a nearby trail, it’s all about getting out in nature and enjoying some physical activity. While most of us aren’t going to go mountain climbing or rock climbing, I’m not able to tackle that type of hard adventure travel activity, there’s nothing like a brisk hike that takes us to a spectacular viewing area to give us a travel high.

7. Trekking

A little more advanced activity level than hiking, trekking is merely going places on foot that you cannot reach by other transportation. You’re not blazing the way but sticking to trails and doing a lot of walking. I think of it as hiking for lots of days, with stops in between (camping or lodging) before continuing on the journey.

Your overall fitness level and budget will help shape your trekking choices. – you may be carrying everything yourself, or you may have the use of a sherpa. Some popular trek options include the Inca Trail in Peru, the Camino de Santiago in Spain, or the Himalayan in Nepal.

While the Great Barrier Reef may be the ultimate scuba diving spot (and one day I will go to Australia), there are plenty of other great diving spots worldwide. Find a coastline, and chances are you’ve got dozens of choices to make. Warm water diving seems to win out over cold water, though, so the Caribbean,  Hawaii , Florida, and Southern California all regularly make lists of the best places for diving.

If you’re not ready to go deep, there’s always snorkeling. While I’m not a strong swimmer, I’ve been able to enjoy snorkeling even though I’m very much a novice at it. I get more proficient every time I try it, and my comfort zone is slowly expanding.

9. Jeep and ATV Tours

I think of this as hiking for vehicles. Seriously, though, you can rent a car and do this on your own or join up with a tour for a group experience. I’ve enjoyed jeep tours as part of a day trip at a conference.

You can try a jeep, scooter, ATV, moped, or SUV in the dunes, the jungle, mountains, and city streets. I have always loved this type of activity and always like to check out tour companies who put a creative spin on it.

10. Glamping

A little bit camp and a little bit glamour, glamping has become the buzzword for bragging that you’re camping while still enjoying a little luxurious glamour. The term seems a bit over-used these days, but we still like to look for new options on the theme.

Think fully outfitted tents in the desert, complete with a chef and staff. Maybe a fully appointed yurt, tree houses that rival any view home you’ve ever seen, or beach properties that are so far off the beaten path. that you didn’t know they existed. Sure, you could make it sound like you’re roughing it – but we know you’re not!

11. Wine Tasting

An appealing soft adventure that’s gaining popularity among baby boomers, we work wine tasting into all of our leisure trips (and a fair number of business trips as well). We love discovering new wines and wineries, learning about the cultural experiences associated with wine and wine production, and learning new things about wine. Wine tourism has become a popular niche market for travel and we recommend you give it a try.

There are fine wineries and beautiful vineyards around the world. I’ve enjoyed wine tastings in Europe and Asia, and can’t wait to get to try Malbec in Argentina and Pinotage in South Africa. Here in the United States, popular wine-tasting areas are Sonoma and Napa Valley wine country (both in California), the Finger Lakes Region (in New York), and the Willamette Valley (in Oregon). Closer to home, we’ve been visiting tasting rooms in the greater -Seattle area and have loved discovering new sips (more on Washington’s AVAs here).

Whether you’re a wine aficionado or merely relish a glass of fine wine, you can plan an itinerary with a partner or group of friends and sample award-winning wines pretty much anywhere you travel. Or maybe discover something new that’s close to home.

12. Fishing

A fun way to combine adventure and luxury on a vacation along rivers, lakes, or open seas. Fishing tourism will help you bond with nature in serene settings in renowned waterways or on small fishing ponds that few have ever heard of.

A guided fishing trip can focus on salmon, tuna, trout, or more. Put together a family or group trip, or sign up for a solo adventure, joining other fishing aficionados. Whether you choose deep-sea fishing or angling on a lake, remember that fishing can be a time-consuming passion. Use care in matching up the right experience for your patience level.

13. Birdwatching

Birding is a near-effortless way for baby boomers to enjoy outdoor activities. Or even in a city backyard. It’s an inexpensive endeavor as the equipment (and also energy) needed is minimal. You’re good to go with a set of binoculars, a field guide or some other identification book. Add in a notebook, and a hat to shield you from the sun, and you’re ready for a bird watching afternoon.

I have an Audubon Guide at home that I constantly refer to when I’m looking at birds in my backyard. It’s also small enough to pack for travel, so you can learn what you’re seeing wherever you travel. Small ships cruising often offer port excursions that include bird and wildlife viewing. On a river cruise, you’re moving slow enough you can spot birds from the top deck. Or, you can opt for more exotic trips – individual exploration or group tours –  in Costa Rica , Indonesia, or the Galapagos.

14. Barge Cruising

Barge cruising  is a trendy travel idea among baby boomers, but it’s not just for older adults. It also makes a great multi-generational trip, especially when you find a smaller barge that is just for your group. It’s a fantastic way to explore river canals and the scenic countryside, enjoy gourmet foods and wine, and schedule hiking and biking alongside the barge. You can hop off at one lock and bike or walk along the canal, getting back on the barge when you’re ready to. The trip includes small guided visits to historic castles, vineyards, iconic churches, and medieval villages along the way (obviously dependent on your itinerary).

A barge cruise is a far more intimate cruise experience than on larger ships. The barge moves very slowly as you hang out with your family and friends – whether they’re friends you brought along or new ones you’ve met. It’s also an opportunity to try out new activities – we had lunch with a countess, tasted champagne in Champagne, and learned about falconry. You can read about our barge cruise here.

15. Sailing

A soft adventure that’s been growing in popularity, sailing used to be a preserve of the wealthy or daredevil adventurers. Not anymore, everyone can jump on board and set sail. If you opt for a crewed sail, the crew will guide the vessel as you sit back, sipping your favorite beverage and enjoying the coastlines. Experience sailers can’t rent outfitted boats and chart their course. There are also opportunities to learn to sail and/or work as a crew member on a boat.

The Mediterranean coast is perfect for sailing during the summer and Hawaii is perfect near year-round. Local lakes often have sailboat rentals. We went sailing in Maine during the summer on a windjammer cruise and found it both relaxing and exhilarating.

Vacations for singles over 50s & 60s

Group laughing at a bar at sunset

Travelling single? Small group travel could be just the ticket

Is a  Japanese  onsen calling you? Or maybe a flavour-packed taco in the streets of  Mexico City  has your name on it? Whether you’re travelling solo, single or simply can’t be labelled, our small group tours are the perfect way to explore a destination and meet like-minded people. While our tours aren’t exclusively for single travellers in their  50s or 60s , you'll be part of a small group of intergenerational, adventure-hungry individuals who are just as keen to explore as you are. From swapping anecdotes over Aperols on the  Amalfi Coast  to late-night chats under the desert skies of Wadi Rum, it’s often those moments of connection – big and small – that are most memorable.

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people travelling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it  happens .

The best part of travelling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the  Inca Trail  or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in  Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your trip with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Travelling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re travelling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep  safety  in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it; find out for yourself.

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our trips.

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to join an Intrepid trip?

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical rating and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures, no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips, the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures , but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all travellers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

For travellers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travellers from these regions who decline travel insurance when travelling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognising personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

Will I have my own room?

It’s completely up to you. On our trips rooming is organised on a twin-share basis and we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our  customer service team  when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and travelling.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the  travel style  - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average), while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Best Cruise Lines for Single Seniors

Do you like going on cruises? Are you single and would like to travel with similar people in your age range? Several cruise lines cater well to single seniors by offering activities, accommodations, and social events tailored to their interests.

Here are some popular cruise line options for single seniors:

  • Best Luxurious Cruise Line – Silversea Cruises – Silversea specializes in luxury cruising with smaller ships that offer an intimate atmosphere. Its sophisticated ambiance and personalized service can appeal to single seniors looking for a premium experience.
  • Best Adult-Only – Viking Ocean Cruises – Viking Ocean Cruises offers an intimate and relaxed cruising experience with no children on board. Itineraries focus on cultural immersion, and its ships feature a variety of amenities and activities suitable for solo travelers, including single stateroom options.
  • Best Entertainment – Cunard Line – Known for its elegant atmosphere and traditional ocean liner experience, Cunard attracts many single seniors. The line offers a variety of enrichment programs, social activities, and formal evenings.
  • Best Long Cruises – Holland America Line – Holland America provides a classic cruising experience with a focus on enrichment activities, cultural experiences, and fine dining. Their ships offer a welcoming atmosphere for solo travelers, including dedicated solo cabins on some ships.
  • Best Over 50 – Saga Cruises – Specifically designed for passengers aged 50 and older, Saga Cruises caters to the needs and interests of mature travelers. They offer single cabins, a relaxed atmosphere, and a variety of inclusive activities and excursions.

When choosing a cruise line, consider factors such as the itinerary, onboard amenities, dining options, and the atmosphere that best suits your preferences and interests as a single senior traveler.

What to Look for in a Cruise Line for Single Seniors

When single seniors are choosing a cruise line, several factors must be considered to ensure an enjoyable and comfortable experience.

Solo Cabins

Some cruise lines offer cabins designed specifically for solo travelers. These can be more affordable than paying a single supplement on a regular double cabin. Check if the cruise line provides these and what the associated costs are.

Single Supplements

Many cruise lines charge a single supplement fee, which can sometimes be up to 100% of the cabin cost. Look for cruise lines that offer reduced or no single supplement fees, which can make cruising more affordable for solo travelers.

Age Demographic

Choose a cruise line that caters to a mature audience or offers specific cruises for seniors. This can enhance your social experience, providing you with opportunities to meet other travelers in your age group.

Onboard Activities and Programs

Look for ships that offer programs and activities suited to your interests. Enrichment programs, lectures, workshops, cultural tours, and gentle physical activities are popular among senior travelers.

Social Opportunities

Some cruise lines organize events specifically for solo travelers, such as welcome receptions or group dining options. These can help you meet other solo travelers and create a sense of community on board.

Itinerary and Duration

Consider the length of the cruise and the destinations. Some seniors prefer longer cruises that visit multiple or exotic locations, while others might prefer shorter, more relaxed itineraries.

Accessibility and Medical Facilities

Check the ship’s accessibility features, especially if you have mobility challenges. Also, ensure that there are medical facilities onboard, which is crucial for older travelers.

Dining Options

Flexible dining options, including open seating and multiple venues, are important to seniors. Some appreciate gourmet dining experiences, while others might prefer more casual options.

Ship Size and Amenities

The size of the ship can impact your experience. Smaller ships often provide a more intimate and less crowded experience, which might appeal to those who prefer a quieter environment. Larger ships might offer more amenities and activities.

Cost and Inclusions

Finally, consider what is included in the price of your cruise. Some luxury lines offer all-inclusive pricing that covers meals, beverages, and even excursions, which can be very convenient and help manage your budget.

Cruise Lines for Single Seniors

These cruise lines prioritize comfort, accessibility, and refined entertainment, ensuring that single seniors can enjoy a fulfilling and hassle-free voyage.

With special features like single cabins, age-specific activities, and inclusive pricing, these cruise lines are superb choices for seniors traveling solo or looking to meet peers in a sophisticated, welcoming setting.

Best Luxurious Cruise Line – Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises is renowned for its ultra-luxury cruising experience. It operates a fleet of small, intimate ships that sail to over 900 destinations globally. This cruise line is perfect for those seeking an all-inclusive experience with personalized service.

The cruise line offers a premier experience tailored towards those who value sophistication, serenity, and depth in their travel adventures. Its focus on luxury and personal comfort makes it an excellent choice for single seniors who are looking for a rich and hassle-free cruising experience.

Key Features of Silversea Cruises

  • All-Inclusive Luxury – Silversea fares generally include gourmet dining, sophisticated wines and spirits, gratuities, and an in-suite butler service, ensuring a highly personalized and carefree cruise experience.
  • Intimate Ship Size – The smaller ship size not only allows access to ports that larger ships cannot reach but also creates a more personal and less crowded experience. This environment fosters easy socializing and personalized attention from the crew.
  • Enrichment Programs – Silversea offers extensive enrichment opportunities such as lectures from guest speakers, culinary demonstrations, and destination-focused insights that cater to the intellectually curious traveler.
  • Personalized Experience – Due to the small size of the ships, staff can provide more attentive and personalized service. Each suite comes with butler service, enhancing the luxury experience.
  • Exotic and Comprehensive Itineraries – Silversea ships visit both common and off-the-beaten-path destinations, offering deeper cultural immersion and unique experiences.
  • High-Quality Dining – With a variety of dining options including partnerships with Relais & Châteaux, Silversea offers exceptional culinary experiences that are included in the cruise fare.
  • Higher Cost – Silversea’s luxurious offerings and all-inclusive nature mean it tends to be more expensive than many other cruise lines, which might be a consideration for budget-conscious travelers.
  • Less Varied Nightlife and Entertainment – Compared to larger ships, the entertainment onboard is more subdued, focusing more on enrichment than on high-energy shows or parties.
  • Older Ships – Some of the ships are older, which might not appeal to those looking for the latest onboard technologies or brand-new facilities, although they are well-maintained and luxurious.

Best Adult-Only Cruise Line – Viking Cruises

Viking Ocean Cruises is known for its modern, elegant ships and emphasis on cultural enrichment and destination-focused itineraries. It maintains an adults-only policy, which provides a calm atmosphere, particularly appealing to those seeking a quiet and sophisticated cruise experience.

The line caters extensively to solo travelers, including offering specific single staterooms, making it an excellent choice for single seniors who appreciate culture, history, and relaxed sophistication. Viking Ocean Cruises provides a refined and thoughtful ocean or river cruising experience that is ideal for single seniors looking for relaxation, enrichment, and a deep dive into the cultures they visit.

Key Features of Viking Ocean Cruises

  • Adults-Only Policy – Viking Ocean Cruises maintains a strict 18-and-over policy, which ensures a serene environment free from the noise and activity associated with children and families. This policy appeals especially to those seeking peace and quiet.
  • Cultural Immersion and Enrichment – Viking provides its passengers with immersive cultural experiences both onboard and ashore. Lectures, themed talks, and destination performances are common, as are included excursions at each port that focus on local culture, history, and cuisine.
  • All-Inclusive Value – Fares include one shore excursion in each port and all onboard meals (including specialty restaurants), making the cruising experience worry-free and comprehensive with no hidden costs.
  • Focus on Destination – Itineraries are designed to spend more time in port, often with overnight stays, allowing deeper exploration of the destinations.
  • Intimate and Comfortable Ships – With a smaller ship size compared to mainstream mega-ships, Viking offers a more personal and less crowded experience, facilitating easier social interactions and more attentive service.
  • High-Quality, Varied Dining Options – Viking’s cuisine is widely praised. It features ingredients sourced from destinations along the itinerary and multiple dining venues that are all included in the cruise fare.
  • Limited Entertainment Options – The entertainment onboard Viking is more low-key, lacking the large-scale shows or casino facilities found on bigger cruise ships, which might not appeal to those seeking a vibrant nightlife.
  • Higher Price Point – While offering considerable value through its inclusive pricing, Viking’s upfront cost can be higher than some other cruise lines, which might be a deterrent for budget-conscious travelers.

Best Entertainment – Cunard Line

Cunard Line stands as a beacon of traditional and elegant ocean travel. It is known for its iconic transatlantic crossings aboard the Queen Mary 2, among other luxurious vessels. This cruise line blends modern amenities with classic charm, offering a timeless cruise experience that appeals to those who appreciate a touch of nostalgia and class.

With its unique blend of historical grandeur and contemporary sophistication, Cunard is a favorite among more mature travelers, including single seniors looking for a distinguished and serene cruising experience.

Cunard Line delivers a cruise experience that is steeped in tradition and luxury, making it particularly appealing to single seniors and those who cherish an elegant, slower-paced travel style. It stands out for its commitment to maintaining the grace of classic ocean voyages while still providing all the amenities expected of a modern luxury cruise.

Key Features of Cunard Line

  • Transatlantic Crossings and World Voyages – Cunard is famed for its transatlantic crossings between New York and Southampton, a unique offering in the modern cruising world. It also offers extensive world voyages that appeal to those who wish to explore the globe in comfort.
  • Enrichment Programs – Cunard prides itself on a broad range of enrichment activities. These include lectures from its Insights program, which features talks by notable historians, scientists, politicians, and more. Cunard also offers workshops and classes ranging from acting and dancing to wine tasting and art.
  • Traditional British Elegance – Cunard ships exude classic British elegance, including afternoon tea served by white-gloved waitstaff, grand ballrooms, and formal gala nights, providing an experience reminiscent of the golden age of ocean travel.
  • Sophisticated Atmosphere – The cruise line upholds a formal and refined ambiance that caters especially well to those who enjoy dressing up and engaging in traditional cruise activities like ballroom dancing.
  • Extensive Itineraries – In addition to the unique transatlantic crossings, Cunard offers a diverse range of itineraries globally, from short trips to full world cruises, providing options for all lengths and types of vacations.
  • High-Quality Dining, Entertainment, and Service – Cunard has a strong reputation for its dining options, from the grand main dining rooms to alternative dining venues that offer a range of gourmet meals prepared to high standards.
  • Formal Atmosphere May Not Appeal to All – The emphasis on formality, including mandatory gala nights where formal attire is required, might not appeal to those looking for a casual vacation experience.
  • Higher Cost – Cunard’s luxurious offerings and unique experiences generally come with a higher price tag, especially for the transatlantic crossings and suites, which might be a consideration for budget-conscious travelers.

Best Long Cruises – Holland America Line

Holland America Line (HAL) is renowned for its mid-sized ships that combine classic maritime traditions with modern hospitality and service. This cruise line appeals to a mature demographic, offering an elegant, relaxed, and refined cruising experience.

Known for its excellent customer service, spacious staterooms, and a wide array of enrichment programs, Holland America Line is particularly popular among mature adults and single seniors who prefer a sophisticated yet understated atmosphere.

Holland America Line is a superb choice for single seniors and mature travelers who prioritize comfort, excellent service, and enriching experiences over the hustle and bustle of larger, more family-oriented cruise lines. Its commitment to a refined cruise experience makes it ideal for those seeking a peaceful and enriching vacation on the seas.

Key Features of Holland America Line

  • Mid-sized Ships – HAL’s ships are designed to be larger than boutique vessels but smaller than mega-ships, striking a balance that allows for a more intimate feel without sacrificing amenities. This size allows for easier navigation of the ship and a more personal level of service.
  • Enrichment Programs and Activities – Holland America places a strong emphasis on cultural enrichment and lifelong learning, offering culinary demonstrations in the Culinary Arts Center modeled after the setup of a broadcast kitchen, digital workshops powered by Windows, and BBC Earth Experiences presentations. These programs appeal particularly to those interested in personal growth and learning.
  • Culinary Excellence – In partnership with America’s Test Kitchen, HAL offers cooking shows and hands-on workshops where passengers can learn cooking techniques and recipes. The dining options aboard are diverse, ranging from casual to fine dining, including partnerships with renowned chefs.
  • Focus on Destination Immersion – Holland America Line excels in creating itineraries that go deep into the cultural aspects of their destinations, often including longer stays, overnight port visits, and extensive shore excursion options to explore local cultures.
  • Adult-Focused Activities – The onboard atmosphere emphasizes serene experiences like cooking classes, wine tastings, and music performances, catering more to adults and less to families with young children.
  • Excellent Service – Known for attentive and high-quality service, the staff on HAL’s ships ensure that each guest feels cared for and valued. This is particularly appealing to older adults who appreciate recognition and personal interaction.
  • Quieter Nightlife – Those looking for vibrant nightlife might find HAL’s entertainment offerings a bit subdued. The nightlife focuses more on relaxation and conversation rather than high-energy parties or late-night dance clubs.
  • Decor and Amenities May Feel Dated – Some passengers feel that the ships, while elegant, could benefit from updates and renovations to match the more modern amenities found on newer ships from competing lines.

Best Over 50 – Saga Cruises

Saga Cruises is a British-based cruise line that specifically caters to travelers aged 50 and over, making it an ideal choice for mature adults and single seniors seeking a comfortable and enjoyable cruise experience tailored to their interests.

The cruise line operates smaller ships, which creates an intimate and friendly atmosphere. This exclusivity for older adults ensures that all facilities, activities, and excursions are designed with senior travelers in mind, providing a bespoke and worry-free cruising environment.

Saga Cruises provides an excellent option for single seniors and older travelers who appreciate an environment that caters exclusively to their age group. With a focus on comfort, accessibility, and tailored activities, Saga ensures a relaxed and enriching cruise experience in a friendly, like-minded community atmosphere.

Key Features of Saga Cruises

  • Age-Specific Cruising – Saga Cruises requires at least one guest per cabin to be aged 50 years or older, with a companion over the age of 40 if not traveling solo. This age policy ensures that the onboard experience, activities, and entertainment are specifically tailored to the preferences of mature adults.
  • Smaller Ship Size – Saga’s fleet consists of smaller ships, which not only allows access to less-trafficked ports of call but also facilitates a more personal and less crowded experience onboard. This setup enhances the quality of service and allows for easier socializing among passengers.
  • All-Inclusive Pricing – Fares on Saga cruises include many amenities that are often extra on other lines, such as travel insurance, gratuities, shuttle buses to and from port towns, Wi-Fi, and a selection of wines at meals. This makes it easy for seniors to manage their travel budget without surprise costs.
  • Personalized Attention and Service – With a high staff-to-passenger ratio and smaller ship sizes, passengers receive more personalized attention from the crew, enhancing the quality of the customer service experience.
  • Comprehensive Medical Support – Understanding the needs of its demographic, Saga ships are well equipped with medical facilities, and there are qualified medical professionals onboard to handle any health-related issues that may arise.
  • Designed for Accessibility – The ships and their programs are designed with accessibility in mind, which is a crucial consideration for seniors. Facilities are easily navigable for those with mobility issues, and special accommodations can be arranged as needed.
  • Limited Ship and Itinerary Choices – Being a smaller cruise line, Saga offers fewer ships and itineraries compared to larger global operators. This might limit options for those looking for more exotic or varied routes.
  • British Focus –  With a primarily British passenger base and operations, the onboard culture, entertainment, and food might be heavily UK-centric, which might not appeal to non-British travelers looking for a more international experience.

Whether choosing the luxurious intimacy of Silversea, the culturally immersive Viking Ocean Cruises, the traditional elegance of Cunard, the enriching environments of Holland America, or the senior-specific offerings of Saga Cruises, each line provides unique advantages that cater to mature adults. These cruise lines prioritize comfort, accessibility, and refined entertainment, ensuring that single seniors can enjoy a fulfilling and hassle-free voyage.

This was a really informative blog. Thank you. I am quite new to cruising but have been on 4 in the past year. I always choose an inside cabin as I have the same facilities as everyone else, but for about half the price (another cruise!). Out of the four cruises, three had no single supplement at all. One was on P and O and two on MSC, so it is always worth looking around x
