It is a walking tour for 3 hours, but comfortably-paced along major picturesque avenues within Midtown Manhattan. Restroom and seating stops are available along the way.

We recommend sneakers, hiking shoes, and waterproof boots on rainy days. Make sure to dress appropriately and bring anything you will need…..gloves in the winter and sunscreen in the summer.

Led by architects, these intimate tours offer greater detail about a given site or building including its initial design and construction. Building tours are an opportunity to see inside some of the city’s most notable new projects and important historical sites that have made a sustained impact on the built environment.

Join the AIANY Women in Architecture Committee for an exclusive tour of 100 Flatbush, part of  the Alloy Block in Downtown Brooklyn. This development is part of a masterplan that integrates several buildings and programs including residential, educational, commercial, cultural, and retail spaces to create a new hub of activity and sustainable design. Learn about how the project came together through the collaboration and innovation of architects, developers, owners, and the community. The tour is an opportunity to explore the development with Jen Grosso and Tara Mrowka of Alloy Development and hear first-hand about the project's remarkable achievements.

About the Speakers: Jen Grosso has been practicing real estate design and architecture for more than 11 years. She started her career as a project architect at SOM on developments for Related Companies, AvalonBay Communities, and Rudin Management in NYC. In 2019, Grosso joined Alloy Development, where she directs the design and architecture team for a large, mixed-use project in Downtown Brooklyn. She received a B.Arch from Cornell University and a Certificate in Real Estate Investment from NYU. She has previously taught at CCNY and Boston Architectural College. In 2020, Grosso was an Urban Design Forum Forefront Fellow researching green cooperative financing, and now serves on the Forefront Steering Committee. She is a member of G.R.E.G, is a LEED Accredited Professional, and a Licensed Architect in New York State.

Tara Mrowka has been working in the fields of architecture and real estate for over 17 years and has been at Alloy since 2012. As an architect and senior director at Alloy, Mrowka manages various stages of the design and development process and oversees all marketing, leasing and sales efforts. Prior to joining Alloy, she worked at the NYC Department of City Planning and as a real estate consultancy in Brooklyn. She holds a B.A. in Urban Studies and Economics from New York University and a Master of Architecture from Parsons School of Constructed Environments. Mrowka is a registered architect in New York state, a member of the American Institute of Architects, and a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson. In addition to her desire to make better buildings and spaces for those living in and around Alloy’s developments, Mrowka is a mother to two young children. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two boys, who she is raising to be stewards of the environment and to positively contribute to the great city we live in.

Building of the Day: 520 Fifth Avenue

Set to be the tallest residential building on Fifth Avenue, Manhattan’s most prestigious business and retail thoroughfare, 520 Fifth Avenue is a mixed-use vertical village, layering program on a constrained site to create a new concept in luxury residential and boutique office space. 

520 Fifth Avenue features classically inspired, 21st-century New York City architecture. Arches modulate, unite, and differentiate the façade from other all-glass skyscrapers of the area. A tripartite loggia spans the first three floors and gives the retail, restaurant, and private club, buffering life within the building from the bustling streetscape. Offices span the lower floors, ensuring each tenant enjoys a full floor identity. The residences rise to 1,000 feet above the New York streetscape, giving tenants sun-filled rooms with twelve-foot ceilings, 10-foot windows that enhance dramatic views of neighboring landmarks, and exquisitely appointed indoor and outdoor amenity spaces. Column-free interiors and a compact and efficient core allow for flexibility in the arrangement of interior office and residential spaces.

Building of the Day: NYPL Inwood Branch

This new 20,000-square-foot branch of the New York Public Library will face out on Broadway, and present itself as a large, open, interior public square for the neighborhood. The library will have a wide range of areas on two levels for seating, study, and collaborative working. There will be areas for teens, children, instruction space, and a community room, with spaces configured to be accessible and flexible.

Building of the Day: Bronx River Greenway/Starlight Park

A new gem of the Bronx River, Starlight Park, has opened as a reclaimed, reconstructed, and expanded park. When you cross the pedestrian bridge at East 177th Street, you will enter a vital link along the Bronx River Greenway. This 13-acre park now features a synthetic turf multi-purpose field, picnic area, two new playgrounds with spray showers, basketball courts, multi-use pathways, and floating docks. More than three-quarters of a mile of new greenway will connect Starlight Park with Bronx Park to the north and Concrete Plant Park, Hunts Point Riverside Park, and Barretto Point Park to the south.

Building of the Day: Brick House

The Glass House, built between 1949 and 1995 by architect Philip Johnson, is a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation located in New Canaan, CT. The pastoral 49-acre landscape comprises 14 structures, including the Glass House (1949), and features a permanent collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture, along with temporary exhibitions. The campus serves as a catalyst for the preservation and interpretation of modern architecture and a canvas for experimentation. 

The tour will begin promptly at 1:00 pm. Attendees will tour the recently reopened Brick House and The Glass House campus. Tour tickets include same-day free general admission to The Glass House.

Building of the Day: 425 Grand Concourse

425 Grand Concourse, designed by Dattner Architects and developed by Trinity Financial and MBD, is one of the largest Passive House projects in the country. This mixed-use development includes 277 affordable housing units, a medical facility, supermarket, and CUNY Hostos student services center. PHIUS certified, it consumes 70% less energy than traditional buildings, providing a sustainable model for healthy living in a district with high childhood asthma rates.

Building of the Day: Far Rockaway Library

The Far Rockaway Library in Queens is designed as a collaboration between Snøhetta and Brooklyn-based contemporary artist José Parlá to reflect Far Rockaway’s diversity and dynamism. Clad in fritted, colored glass, with a gradient reflective of the Long Island sunrise, the design balances transparency and translucency to welcome the community. Serving as a gathering place and resource for knowledge, the library symbolizes resilience and provides a platform for shaping the neighborhood’s future.

Building of the Day: Domino Sugar Refinery

The Domino Sugar Refinery is the lone remaining historic building within a 19th century industrial complex. The historic shell was once an agglomeration of three conjoined buildings, each with its own idiosyncratic floor-to-floor configuration. Rather than navigating the misaligned window heights, Practice for Architecture (PAU) designed a new building that nests inside the existing masonry structure. By pulling back from the existing walls, ideal and standardized floor heights were achieved, while creating a unique interstitial space.

Building of the Day: The Cubes at Socrates Sculpture Park

Located at the main entrance of Socrates Sculpture Park at Vernon Boulevard, the CUBES houses the park’s educational and administration programs: 960 square feet at ground level offer flexible multi-purpose indoor space for education programming and exhibits, with a 480 square-foot shaded deck area for outdoor classes and programming; and 1,200 square feet of open space at the second level house office and administration space.

Building of the Day: Nine Chapel

Development firm Tankhouse and architecture firm SO-IL have collaborated to introduce Nine Chapel, a new Downtown Brooklyn condominium building that reinvents outdoor space for vertical living. Draped in a shimmering skin of perforated metal, the building’s eye-catching exterior absorbs light and stands out, creating privacy for indoor-outdoor spaces while allowing transparency for vast light and views. Nine Chapel offer 27 homes that each feature at least two exposures and private outdoor space

Building of the Day: Institute for Studies on Latin American Art

A new downtown home for the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art, the project is the culmination of two years of close collaboration between the architects and ISLAA to develop a flexible response to support the growing institution and its evolving program. The space comprises 4,000 sqft of exhibition space across two levels, as well as a research center, archives, staff and conference spaces, and more.

Building of the Day: Triangle Fire Memorial

The Triangle Fire Memorial honors the victims and legacy of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire—a pivotal event in US and labor history. Its textured, stainless steel “ribbon” on the building where the fire took place extends to the windowsill of the 9th floor, where many of the victims jumped to their death. The names and ages of those 146 victims are cut into this ribbon and mirrored onto a reflective panel.

Building of the Day: W New York – Union Square

In 2000, the historic Beaux-Arts style Guardian Life Building insurance building was adapted into the W New York – Union Square by Rockwell Group. The firm has recently completed a major renovation of the hotel. The tour will include guest rooms and public areas, including the lobby, restaurant, and the building’s magnificent ballroom, with ornate detailing, marble columns and double-height ceilings, that has been converted into a lounge that will be open to the public.

Please note: this tour is not accessible by wheelchair and will involve climbing stairs to the roof.

Building of the Day: One Domino Square

Newly opened in 2024, this 700,000-square-foot, mixed-use development is the third residential building on the historic Domino Sugar Refinery site in Williamsburg. It features two towers atop a shared seven-story podium: a south tower with 55 floors and a north tower with 39 floors. Anchoring a new 11-acre public park and adjacent to Domino Square, the project is part of Two Trees Management’s redevelopment, enhancing the neighborhood’s historic and waterfront connections.

Building of the Day: HELP ONE

HELP ONE, a four-building mixed-use complex, comprises nearly a full city block in East New York, Brooklyn. Phase I of this sustainability-focused project provides affordable and supportive housing for vulnerable and underserved populations at Buildings A and B. The complex design deploys setbacks, height and palette variation to complement the three unique street contexts it fronts. HELP ONE is the winner of Interior Design magazine's 2024 NYCxDESIGN Award in the Supportive Housing category.

Building of the Day: Grey Art Museum

NYU worked with Ennead Architects to design renovated facilities that highlight the importance of the arts on campus and reshape the visitor experience. Among the major improvements are the Cottrell-Lovett Gallery and the creation of the Cottrell-Lovett Study Center, which enables researchers, faculty, and students to have more direct access to the collection of nearly 6,000 objects. Ennead created an elegant solution to expand the gallery, add accessibility, and increase storage.

Commercial office design was forever changed with the completion of SOM’s Lever House in 1952 as the first International Style building in the United States. SOM restored its façade in 2001, and returned again in 2023 to complete the building’s restoration. With a completely updated plaza and outdoor spaces, a revitalized lobby, and new mechanical systems that improve energy efficiency, the project has recaptured this midcentury icon’s original splendor as Park Avenue’s premier boutique office.

The Sunset Park Library Branch is one of the Brooklyn Public Library’s busiest locations, serving a community that includes many non-native English speakers, students, families, and seniors. With a space too small and outdated to adequately address the needs of its patrons, Brooklyn Public Library partnered with the Fifth Avenue Committee to develop a new, greatly expanded library and affordable housing site. The space is outfitted for the modern era, with the collections, technology, and flexible space needed to accommodate many uses and serve a large, diverse group of patrons.

Building of the Day: Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center

The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, occupying half of the historic Stonewall Inn, anchors the only LGBTQIA+ National Monument in the National Park Service. Honoring the legacy of the Stonewall Riots, the birthplace of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, the center features immersive programs, curated exhibitions, and art installations in a thoughtfully designed space. Operated by the PrideLive, the center offers a powerful experience, encouraging reflection on the ongoing fight for LGBTQIA+ equality.

Building of the Day: New York Hall of Science (Group 1)

New York Hall of Science's (NYSCI) Great Hall was designed by Wallace K. Harrison for the 1964 World's Fair and is one of the few structures that remains standing. Harrison's design is made up of 100-foot-high undulating walls with 5,000+ cobalt-blue dalle de verre panels set into the structure. The Great Hall is one of the most remarkable spaces in the city, on par with Grand Central Terminal's main concourse and NYPL's Rose Reading Room.

Pier 17 is a major new addition to the public life of Manhattan’s Seaport district. The 300,000-square-foot building is home to a wide range of uses that contribute to the vitality and continuity of public space along the riverfront. At ground level a sheltered, open-air pedestrian experience offers a mix of dining, gathering, and smaller-scale retail integrally connected to the surrounding promenades and parklands of SHoP’s East River Waterfront.

There is an abundance of amazing architecture in Manhattan including an ornate church from the 1800s, early 20th century skyscrapers and modern towers. As you walk through the streets of New York, you will see a multitude of interesting buildings embodying a variety of architectural styles.

Architectural Walking Tour Directions

To explore New York's architectural highlights our walking tour begins at the 23rd street Subway Station accessible from the 4, 6, N, R, F, or M Train. This walk is about 4.5 kms long and should take about 1h 15m at a normal walking pace, not including stops. We suggest you allow a minimum of 3 hrs to give yourself time to explore.

Manhattan Unlocked answers the question every New Yorker has asked, " why is this building next to that building, and that building next to this building? " We take that question to its logical conclusion and let the built environment--the city itself--tell its own story!

We realized there's more to the million-and-one things to be seen on the surface of the city today. Manhattan Unlocked takes into account ancient geography and historic transit, in addition to commerce, architecture, immigration and everything else, to explain the city's growth and development. In fact, New York City can only be understood from an all-of-history, holistic point of view.

Manhattan Unlocked began as a blog over a decade ago to decode and make sense of the streetwalls of the city. What most people consider New York City is an architectural complex and constellation of neighborhoods stretching almost 5 miles from the Battery to Central Park through the island's core. Yet, what looks like a jumble of buildings on any given block (we realized long ago) couldn't be random. There had to be a logic to the blocks; patterns to the neighborhoods. Neighborhoods comprising cast iron buildings or skyscrapers had to be part of some overarching narrative. There had to be a way that Tribeca and Museum Mile were part of the same story.

We soon realized that in the search for "unified theory" behind New York's instantly recognizable, yet enigmatic streetscape, we needed to hit the pavement so to speak. Manhattan Unlocked Historical and Architectural Walking Tours was born (thank you Viator and TripAdvisor, but now bookings can be made directly!). The blog had been put on hiatus, but we hope to begin updating again soon, and with a new look! Join us on a walking tour, and we look forward to uploading new and interesting posts soon.
