What people love about bali tours from ubud.

I loved the trip with Wonderlands. I did one week travel from Bali to Gili and Kuta in Lombok. My highlights were definitely the scuba diving at Gili T. It was a great experience. Also all the amazing moments in nature seeing waterfalls or the Gili Beaches. I’ve travelled with Stacia as a Tourguide and am really happy about it. She is lovely and I felt very comfortable around her. We could always talk to her. All in all I’m glad I did this tour.
It's such a well organized trip with quality local operators working with G Adventures to ensure smooth days with very little time wasted. The Wellness tour category is wonderful and really makes trips more healing and less frustration or headache.
I had the most incredible 5-day Bali tour experience, all thanks to the amazing tour guide, Yanik! As a solo traveler, I couldn't have asked for a better companion to explore this beautiful island. From the moment we met, Yanik's warm and welcoming personality made me feel like I was exploring Bali with a friend. Throughout the tour, Yanik took me to numerous temples, enchanting waterfalls, and thrilling adventure spots that left me in awe of Bali's natural beauty and cultural richness. Her expertise in navigating the island ensured that I got to see all the hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path locations, making the journey even more special. Yanik's knowledge about Bali's culture and history was truly impressive. She passionately shared fascinating stories and insights at every stop, making each visit so much more meaningful. Her ability to intertwine facts with personal anecdotes made the experience educational and engaging. If you're planning a trip to Bali and want an unforgettable experience, I wholeheartedly recommend Yanik and this tour for you. She will take you on a journey of discovery, provide endless opportunities for adventure, and ensure you leave with a deep appreciation for the beauty and culture of Bali. Terima kasih, Yanik, for the tour!

Rooted with deeply spiritual and creative influences, the town of Ubud offers a whole host of things to do whilst retaining its authentic Balinese culture. It’s no surprise that our Ubud day tours are extremely popular; with so many famous attractions and lesser known gems to visit including the Ubud Monkey Forest, rice terraces, spas, temples and waterfalls, there’s no other experience in the world quite like the one you’ll get on one of our private Ubud tours.

For instance, our Best of Ubud Tour will give you the opportunity to discover spiritual temples, the famous Jungle Swing and breathtaking waterfalls; there’s no better way to take in some of the best things Ubud has to offer! You can also go all-out with our Bali White Water Rafting & ATV Adventure, which is amongst our most exhilarating private tours in Ubud and lets you see the area from a whole new perspective.

Of course, there’s plenty of opportunity to take a more relaxing vacation and get away from the commotion and stress of everyday life with our Ubud activities. Whether you’re a solo traveler or taking in the sights as a family, our private Ubud tours offer plenty of activities suitable for just about anyone - with the potential for a peaceful getaway, a cultural immersion or something exciting for adults and children alike, it’s no wonder our Ubud day tours are so popular!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need in Ubud?

With the amount of Ubud activities on offer, we’d recommend as many days as you can stay for! There are countless adventures you can take and intriguing sights to see, both natural and architectural, to stay busy for weeks (let alone what the surrounding has to offer); however, if you have a strong idea on what you’re interested in seeing and doing, a week or two should be enough to have as many day trips in Ubud as you want. However long you stay for, you’ll be wanting to come back as soon as possible to take part in the Ubud tours you didn’t get to do the first time round!

Is Ubud safe to visit?

Yes, Ubud is absolutely safe to visit, but of course trips to Ubud take some planning and general safety precautions are advisable. We’d strongly recommend booking some of our private Ubud tours with us to ensure a seamless experience, with no stress or need to plan in advance for entrance fees, lunch and more - although going it alone is perfectly fine if you plan properly! As with when you travel anywhere, you should take all regular precautions like keeping your belongings close and wearing the right clothing, a good amount of sunscreen and all the essentials to make sure you get the most out of your tours in Ubud.

Ubud Bali Travel Guide: 31 Best Things To Do

This Ubud travel guide is the culmination of our many years spent exploring the artistic and cultural center of Bali island. No trip to Indonesia would be complete without a visit to Ubud Bali!

This town and tourist hotspot is full of interesting markets, palaces, jungles, and temples to see, and of course lots of great cafes, restaurants, and comfy luxury hotels. It has all the sights and charms of Balinese culture.

After you’ve exhausted all of the top things to do in Ubud, there are even more waterfalls and rice terraces to see in the nearby areas of Tegalalang, Gianyar, and Bangli, which can be reached in 15-30 minutes.

Here’s my Ubud travel guide, with a list of some of the very best things to do in Ubud Bali!

Where Is Ubud Bali?

First things first — where is Ubud Bali located?

Ubud is located in the highlands of the Gianyar regency, in the heart of Bali, Indonesia. It’s about 40 kilometers north of the Bali airport, which is a 1 hour drive.

The main Ubud tourist area is concentrated near the Ubud town center, which is packed with hotels, restaurants, markets, activities, and attractions like the Bali Monkey Forest.

However, the areas surrounding Ubud (like Tegalalang, Gianyar, and Bangli) also have some nice accommodation, and there are lots of waterfalls , temples , rice terraces, and other things waiting to be explored.

Ubud Travel Guide Things To Do In Ubud Bali

The best things to do in Ubud Bali include markets, palaces, and rice terraces.

How To Get Around Ubud Bali

If you’re staying near the Ubud town center, it’s pretty walkable and most things are close enough to be reached on foot.

However, if you want to do some exploring outside of town, you’ll need to rent a scooter or hire a private car and driver (both of these can be booked online). Airport transfers to Ubud from the Bali airport can also be arranged with your hotel or booked online .

Taxis are available for short rides around Ubud, but the prices are wildly inflated for tourists. It’s possible to use ride-hailing apps like Grab and Go-Jek , but you have to be discreet because the local taxi mafia is very protective of their turf, and may cause trouble if they see you using one of these apps in Ubud.

Best Things To Do In Ubud Bali

1. ubud monkey forest.

Seeing the cheeky Bali monkeys should be somewhere near the top of your Ubud to do list, and the Sacred Monkey Forest is the most popular place to do it.

Swing by the famous Ubud Monkey Forest for a funny experience getting your pic taken with the Balinese macaques.

There are hundreds of them living in the jungle here, and they’re (mostly) friendly to outsiders.

2. Ubud Market

Just up the street from the monkey forest, you’ll find the Ubud art market.

It’s full of interesting handmade Balinese souvenirs and trinkets for sale, including wood carvings, coconut bowls, rattan hats and bags, and paintings of rural life, with scenes similar to what you can witness in the Ubud area.

You can also find the usual tourist items like shirts and fridge magnets here. Feel free to haggle for lower prices, because some of the sellers start a bit on the high side. Haggling is expected, and it’s part of the fun.

3. Ubud Restaurants

Ubud has great restaurants and cafes everywhere you look.

A lot of places serve familiar Western foods and fresh fruit juices (including smoothie bowls ), but don’t forget to try the local Indonesian dishes too, like chicken satay and nasi goreng.

This is far from a complete list, but here are some great restaurants to check out in Ubud:

  • Breakfast — Watercress Ubud , Milk & Madu , Suka Espresso , Social Monkeys , Bittersweet , and Lazy Cats Cafe
  • Dinner — Restaurant Locavore , Copper Kitchen & Bar , Hujan Locale , Ibu Susu Bar & Kitchen , Embers Restaurant , and The Grill At Luxe
  • Ethnic — Omiiku (Chinese), Fu Shou Noodle Club (Chinese), Toro Sushi Cafe (Japanese), Pesona Lounge (Indian), Uma Cucina (Italian), Nostimo Grill (Greek), Pica South American Kitchen (Peruvian), Sweet Orange Warung (Indonesian), Bebek Bengil (Balinese), and Wanara Spice (Balinese)
  • Dessert — Caramel Patisserie & Cafe , Monsieur Spoon , Daily Baguette , Yogurt Republic , Room4Dessert , Frozen Yogi , Gelato Secrets , and Tukies Coconut Shop

Of course, Ubud also has plenty of cheap and authentic Indonesian ‘warungs’ (little family owned restaurants) if you look in the side alleys and outside of the main town center. Bali is pretty much a foodie paradise for any kind of budget.

We plan to cover food and restaurants in more detail with another Ubud travel guide later on, so remember to bookmark this blog and check back later!

4. Balinese Massage

Practically every third building in Ubud is a massage shop.

Balinese massage is fantastic and the prices can be very affordable, at 150k Rupiah ($10 USD) or less for a 1 hour body massage.

It’s the perfect way to unwind after a full day of hiking or touring.

5. Ubud Royal Palace

On the corner of the Ubud town center is this fancy palace from the 1800s, with amazing Balinese stone carvings and courtyards. It’s a quick stop (15 minutes) but very worthwhile!

6. Tegalalang Rice Terraces

Bali’s most famous rice terraces are at Tegalalang, just a 15 minute drive north of Ubud.

Here, you can see layered rice paddies with bright green colors. The water flows through the terraces in steps, irrigating the rice for the farmers while creating a beautiful landscape.

There are foot paths to walk through the whole valley and see the terraces up close. It’s one of Bali’s most iconic sights!

7. Bali Elephant Sanctuary

Mason Elephant Park is a rescue park opened in 1997, and they do a lot of great conservation work for the Sumatran elephants, which are critically endangered on their home island of Sumatra in Indonesia.

We had a great experience here, and I have to say every aspect of the park is very well managed and nicely maintained. The elephants are happy and healthy, and you can tell they love the attention from humans.

The park is a 30 minute drive from Ubud.

Ubud Temples

8. saraswati temple.

The Saraswati water temple is in central Ubud and it has some of the coolest wall patterns and carvings you’ll see in Bali. The doors are insanely detailed and elaborate. Flowers, dragons, demon figures, and more.

9. Pura Dalem Temple

This is another temple in central Ubud and it’s known for having some of the most bizarre and intricate statues of any of the Bali temples. Creepy demon goddesses, lions, and other creatures stare back at you here.

bali tour from ubud

10. Goa Gajah Elephant Cave

This is one of the oldest temples you can visit in Ubud, and also one of the weirdest. Goa Gajah dates back to the 9th century. The doorway to the cave is really bizarre and unique, and it feels like you’re walking into the belly of some rock monster!

The inside of the cave has a narrow path that goes about 15 meters deep, where you’ll find some Hindu incense baskets burning, and the outside of the cave has a photogenic banyan tree with giant roots.

Overall, Goa Gajah one of the most peculiar temples in the Ubud area.

11. Samuan Tiga Temple

This is a big temple from the 10th century between Ubud and Gianyar, just 800 meters from the Goa Gajah temple or a 10 minute drive from central Ubud. This temple is unusually quiet and only a few tourists seem to know about it, but it’s popular for Hindu ceremonies.

Ubud Waterfalls

12. layana waterfall.

This is one of the easiest waterfalls to visit in Ubud. Layana is just a 10 minute drive from the Ubud town center.

As an added bonus, there’s a warung above the waterfall where you can eat with the view — but it’s totally optional, you don’t have to order anything to visit the falls.

13. Tibumana Waterfall

Tibumana used to be a secret waterfall, but it’s exploded in the last couple years and now every Instagrammer comes here. It’s still worth a visit!

The road to this one winds through some green rice fields and palm trees, so it’s a great scenic drive, and there are a couple of smaller waterfalls you can also see nearby.

14. Suwat Waterfall

This waterfall is an up-and-coming hidden gem near Gianyar and Ubud. It’s good for swimming and there’s even a neat little bamboo raft you can paddle around on.

The hike to Suwat Waterfall is short and easy, and takes you through a small bamboo forest and other tropical foliage along the way.

15. Taman Sari Waterfall

Just 500 meters from the entrance to Tibumana is a separate path that leads to Taman Sari Waterfall.

Also called the Pengibul Waterfall, it’s a small 2-step cascade with no crowds, and you can reach it in 5-10 minutes of walking, so it’s definitely worth checking out while you’re at Tibumana!

16. Goa Rang Reng Waterfall

Watch out for slippery rocks! Goa Rang Reng has 3 different waterfalls, but my favorite is the first one, a big sloped cascade that looks like a natural Slip N Slide.

17. Kanto Lampo Waterfall

Kanto Lampo is a cascade of waterfalls running over the rocks into a natural pool below. As an added bonus, you get to see some creepy carvings in the rock walls nearby.

This is a really nice waterfall and I’d definitely rate it as one of the best things to do in Ubud!

18. Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan is the busiest and most touristy waterfall in Bali. Don’t go here to escape the crowds, but it’s still a nice spot for lunch, and chances are you’ll be driving past it at some point anyway!

22. Mas Wood Carving

Balinese wood carvings are some of the best in Southeast Asia, and the carvers at Mas village are known for being some of the very highest quality. Warning though, some of these can be very pricey. Research and haggle before you buy.

23. Goa Giri Campuhan Waterfall

The Bangli area has lots of great waterfalls and it’s not far from Ubud. Start with Goa Giri Campuhan waterfall, in the north. This one is hidden and you have to sneak through a couple of cool caves to reach it.

24. Goa Garba

This is an ancient cave temple and 12th century archaeological site in Pejeng village.

Goa Garba was a school and place of study for the Balinese kings and their children. Today, it’s a peaceful hidden spot in the jungle where you can see some ruins and escape the tourist crowds.

25. Gunung Kawi Ruins

Of course I can’t do an Ubud travel guide without mentioning Gunung Kawi!

In my opinion, this is one of the most unique and interesting temples in Bali. Gunung Kawi is actually an underground temple carved into the side of a cliff.

It’s an 11th century temple, and the age of everything here is obvious when you look at it.

This is one of the most well known temples near Ubud, partly because of the Hindu holy spring where visitors (including tourists) are allowed to bathe and pray, if that’s your thing.

29. Sangeh Monkey Forest

The Sangeh Monkey Forest is another protected jungle area in central Bali with hundreds of friendly (but wild) monkeys to play with.

If the Ubud Monkey Forest is too crowded for your liking, you might want to check out the one in Sangeh instead. It’s only 30 minutes from Ubud, but it’s quieter, cheaper, and less crowded.

I think this is one of the best temples in Bali — very photogenic, but away from the major tourist areas so it doesn’t get too crowded. Taman Ayun is pretty close to Abiansemal and the Sangeh Monkey Forest.

Ubud Bali Itinerary

Here’s what a sample 3-day or 4-day itinerary for Ubud Bali could look like:

  • Day 1: Ubud Center . Visit the Ubud Monkey Forest , Ubud Market, Ubud Palace , and Saraswati Temple . If monkeys aren’t your thing, substitute that for the Campuhan Ridge Walk or Sayan Point.
  • Day 2: Ubud Terraces & Temples . Visit Tegalalang Rice Terrace , Gunung Kawi Sebatu Water Temple, Tirta Empul Temple , Gunung Kawi Temple , and Goa Gajah Temple . If you want to focus less on temples, you could substitute one of these for a visit to a scenic Bali swing instead.
  • Day 3: Waterfalls Near Ubud . Visit some nearby falls like Goa Giri Campuhan Waterfall, Kuning Waterfall, Tibumana Waterfall , Taman Sari Waterfall , and Goa Rang Reng Waterfall.
  • Day 4 (Optional): Explore South of Ubud . Visit sights south of Ubud like the famous Mas wood carving shop, Kemenuh Butterfly Park , Tegenungan Waterfall , and the Bali Bird Park & Reptile Park.

A fancy door at the Ubud Palace

Is Ubud Safe?

Yes, Ubud is very safe. It gets more than 4 million visitors a year, and it’s generally known as one of the safest areas in Bali. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues.

I’ve often brought my camera gear all over Ubud photographing the markets, temples, and rice terraces, and there are usually plenty of other photographers doing the same.

Even around sunrise, people are already jogging the path at Campuhan Ridge Walk and other places in Ubud. Violent crime is rare in Bali, and Indonesia in general.

The main thing to watch out for is drive-by phone snatchings, which do happen in some parts of Bali from time to time, so just remember to put away your phone when you’re near a busy road with passing motorbikes.

When To Visit Ubud Bali

The best time to visit Ubud depends on what you’re looking for:

☁ Bali’s rainy season runs from November to April. The weather during the day can be hot and humid, at 32 to 35 °C (90 to 95 °F), but it’s less crowded during this time, and the rain is normally in the evening or at night.

☀ From May to August, the temps are cooler, and it’s more breezy and sunny. This is the windy season and it’s the nicest weather. It’s also the high season for tourists, so it’s generally more crowded.

In any case, it’s generally possible to experience the sights in this Ubud travel guide all year round!

I love this sign. It’s so authentically ‘Bali’. I want to hang it in my living room.

Ubud Hotels

Bali private driver & motorbike rental.

If you want to explore Bali in the comfort and safety of a private car with an English speaking driver, my top recommendation would be GetYourGuide .

Their price is 650k Rupiah ($45 USD) for a full day of driving and sightseeing in Bali (up to 10 hours) for 1-5 passengers. That's the total price for the whole car + driver + petrol! It's a great deal. They also offer affordable hotel transfers from the airport.

If you'd rather travel by motorbike, they have that too. Their scooter rentals start at 140k Rupiah (~$9) and include a helmet, rain coat, and free delivery in the south Bali area.

We've used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they're great! Highly recommended.

Great and useful information learnt alot thanks is Ubud or Bali disabled friendly?

' src=

Hi Fabiana, yes Bali is fairly disabled friendly, although it depends where you go. The temples and waterfalls usually have lots of stairs, for example. But there are still a lot of nice places you can see in a wheelchair.

Thanks David for the useful information learnt I am a disabled person but love traveling and adventure my two kind friends will be with when visiting Ubud, Bali

Welcome! Have a nice trip!

Ubud Travel Guide

For many Ubud is the cultural centre of Bali; known for art and a strong spiritual presence where inspired visitors, seekers, and traveling artists come to find connection.

UBUD GUIDE – Bali

Ubud is known for….

  • Unique culture
  • Nature: Rice terrace, waterfall, forest
  • Dance shows
  • Local culinary
  • Spiritual tours

How is Ubud in general?

Ubud is a cultural hub as beautiful as the nature that surrounds it.

Ubud is a major centre of the Balinese culture and local spirituality that has attracted artists and travelers for nearly a century. Although its ever-increasing popularity means that this area is now sometimes as busy as Bali’s southern neighborhoods, the development of Ubud has been more focused on maintaining traditional culture .

Ubud – Guide & Insights

Ubud has many guest houses run by friendly local families, some of which have been open for generations, as well as a variety of elegant and well-priced mid-range hotels. The mountainous countryside just outside Ubud is home to some breathtaking five-star hotels and luxurious serviced villas. Some of these amazing crown jewels of hospitality are up to 30min away from the center of Ubud nestled within nature and river valleys . Whether you are trying to stretch every penny or spend like there’s no tomorrow, you will be able to find a place in Ubud surrounded by forest and jungle to be one with nature.

Seeing as Ubud runs as a cultural hub for creative and spiritual people, you’ll find many retreats to stay at for those on a journey . Even though the hotels and resorts are inland, and the beaches aren’t as easily accessible, forest and jungle are present instead. If you’re looking for tranquility surrounded by blissful nature , then the lush villas and bamboo huts available in this area will provide you just that with a private pool and hospitable service on hand.

Some of Ubud’s  traditional dishes have gained so much popularity that entire restaurants have been built around them. Members of the large expatriates’ community in Ubud have also opened restaurants serving food from around the world. Healthy foods are all the rage in Ubud ; almost all restaurants have vegetarian, vegan and organic options available, as well as dishes for people with dietary restrictions.

Ubud has a growing nightlife, mostly centred on live music . Drinking and dancing are not uncommon, as most heavy partying happens on the west side of the island. However, you’ll find that Ubud offers a relaxed and quieter experience as nightlife here ends much earlier than in Kuta or Seminyak, compared to their younger counterparts. That doesn’t mean you won’t find fancy bars and lounges in the area to wind down for the night with a cocktail or two in hand.

With an award-winning infinity pool that overlooks the jungle, spectacular ricefields, and scrumptious vegan meals, Ubud is the perfect serene hideaway for luxury travel.

The palace of Ubud’s royal family is in the centre of town and able to be visited. Just next door to it is a large traditional market selling goods of every kind. At the south of the Ubud centre is a monkey forest where a tribe of monkeys runs wild among moss-covered statues and shrines . Also within Ubud are many museums showcasing the lives and works of local artists and expatriates who have settled there, some of which date back 50 years or more. Dances and performances are regularly held in several venues. Around Ubud are several animal parks, as well as many historical sites and temples . These can be visited in tours, either by car or bike.

The area around Ubud is ideal for hiking and biking , and whitewater rafting on mountain rivers is also an option. Walking around the town itself can be entertaining, preferably in the cooler and drier mornings and late afternoons. Many meditation and yoga classes are available , as are courses in Balinese dance and cooking. Ubud is home to regular festivals for authors, artists, musicians, and the spiritually inclined, and these can be great fun if they happen while you are visiting. Ubud also has fantastic spas and is a great place to pamper yourself with a traditional massage or herbal treatment .

Ubud is known to be well over 1,000 years old , and for much of that time, it has been a centre for monasteries and shrines. The royal families grew strong during Bali’s Majapahit era, and in the 20th century, they welcomed in Dutch colonialists, unlike the rulers of other parts of Bali. Between the 1930s and 1970s, Ubud began to attract artists, filmmakers, and musicians , many of whom settled there and made it their home, interacting with local artists and dancers and contributing to Bali’s cultural development. In the 1970s, Ubud began to become a popular tourist destination, and it has grown since then, always at an increasing rate. Today, it is a fully developed tourist centre but is still highly focused on spiritual principles .

Ubud’s local communities are very strict on managing transportation in their territories. That’s why online taxis like Grab and GoJek (our version of Uber) don’t operate here, or only allowed to drop guests when they come from outside of Ubud. Many local taxi groups have an agreement with hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions, to cater guests exclusively. Many hotels offer free shuttles to drop and pick up their guests in the center a few times a day. The Bali government has started an eco-friendly public transportation recently, the proposed electric buses are expected to hit the roads in Sanur, Kuta, Denpasar and Ubud soon. Still, if you want to have a smooth experience for your holiday, consider hiring a car rental with a driver for half or full day. Renting a scooter is also a great idea; but only if you have experience riding two-wheelers.

Ultimate Ubud 4-Day Itinerary: A Complete Guide

Are you planning a trip to Bali? One of the most popular locations is Ubud, and even though it’s a dynamic place, it’s still a gem, which we loved! You’ll need a few days to explore the town and surrounding areas, so I thought a Ubud 4-day itinerary would help you plan an epic holiday in Bali. We lived in Bali for six months, and although we were based in Canggu, we visited Ubud a few times; it’s one of my favorite places! Well, to be honest, Bali was great. In this post, I’m sharing the ultimate, or at least what I consider the top, 4-day Ubud itinerary. I’m also including personal insights, tour recommendations, and a few other topics to help you plan an epic trip!

This is a guest post by Abigail Dalton. Abigail  is the owner and creator behind  I’m Going On An Adventure . She focuses on budget travel and outdoor adventure, giving first-hand experiences to help her readers plan their perfect travel and make the best memories.

Summary: Ubud 4-Day Itinerary

Campuhan Ridge, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Campuhan Ridge, Ubud

  • Day 1: Ubud Town – Spend the day visiting Campuhan Ridge Walk, Kajeng Rice Fields, Ubud Art Market, Ubud Water Palace (Saraswati Lotus Temple), Ubud Royal Palace and the Sacred Monkey Forest.
  • Day 2: Ubud Bike Tour – Tegalalang Rice Terraces , villages and local crafts; finish with a Balinese massage in Ubud
  • Day 3: Purification Ceremony at Taman Beji Waterfall, Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu and Goa Gajah Cave Sanctuary
  • Day 4: Waterfall & Temple Visits – Pura Lempuyang Temple, Tirta Gangga (Water Palace), Pura Tirta Empul Temple, Tukad Cepung Waterfall, Tibumana Waterfall, Tegenungan Waterfall and Kanto Lampo Waterfall

For the best holiday, I recommend booking a couple of Bali tours and, if you have time, visiting some lesser-known spots as well as the more popular hangouts. 4-days in Ubud is a reasonable amount of time, but consider visiting other gems like Amed or Medewi as well.

Planning Your 4 Days In Ubud

Before we dive in, I want to go over some things worth considering when planning a trip to Bali in Indonesia . Firstly, Bali has become a popular holiday destination, meaning it attracts large crowds. Even though it’s still a beautiful destination, you won’t be getting paradise for yourselves. It’s essential to have realistic expectations, so you’re not disappointed.

Questions to think about when planning your trip:

  • When are you planning to visit, and for how long are you traveling? Depending on the time of year you visit, the island can look and feel very different!
  • Are you comfortable riding a scooter? Or would you prefer private transportation? Consider this carefully, as it may impact the feasibility of some of the activities listed in this itinerary.
  • What are the top attractions and activities you want to experience in Ubud? Ubud is a treasure trove of culture and fun,  so it’s challenging to see it all. If you only have four days in Ubud, you’ll have to choose your favorites carefully.
  • Where should you stay in Ubud, and what type of accommodation suits your needs? Ubud is teeming with fantastic hotels. You’ll find budget stays at luxury resorts, but staying central is crucial to having the best experience.
  • What is the budget for your trip? Bali can be affordable if you’re consciously budgeting, but it’s easy to blow the budget, too. Keep this in mind when choosing activities.
  • What type of travel insurance will you be purchasing? Depending on which activities you choose to do, some insurance doesn’t cover high-risk sports.

After you’ve considered these questions, you’ll be on your way to planning a great visit to Bali.

As for your 4 days in Ubud, let’s crack on; the itinerary below is how I would’ve chosen to spend my time if I had known what I know now from living there.

Ubud 4-Day Itinerary: Day 1

Ubud Town: Campuhan Ridge Walk – Kajeng Rice Fields – Ubud Art Market –  Ubud Water Palace (Saraswati Lotus Temple) – Ubud Royal Palace – Sacred Monkey Forest.

It’s only fitting that you spend your first day exploring Ubud Town. This will fit into most schedules should you arrive early in the morning or the night before. Central Ubud is not big, and you can visit all these attractions in a day.

Campuhan Ridge Walk

If you’ve got a full day to explore, I would recommend visiting Campuhan Ridge Walk in the morning. This is when there are fewer crowds; you’re more likely to see locals walking their dogs instead.

The morning also brings cooler temperatures, and early morning Ubud was always a favorite of ours; visit for sunrise to make it even better!

Once you reach the end of the ridge (start at the south end), you’ll enter a small community that sells local arts and crafts; this is quite an artistic area of Ubud. Follow the road through, and you’ll come out at rice fields. There are many small warungs within the fields, and they are great places to grab breakfast.

Afterwards, you can either walk back along the ridge or jump in a taxi to take you back to central Ubud. I suggest you download the Gojek or Grab ride-hail app (it’s the same as Uber) for ease. If you end up in remote areas, you can also request a scooter taxi through the same service!

Ubud Water Palace (Saraswati Lotus Temple) & Ubud Royal Palace

Once back in central Ubud, enjoy the rest of your morning by visiting top sites like the Water Palace and Ubud’s Royal Palace. They are very close to each other, so you can easily walk between them.

The Royal Palace was the residence of the royal family of Ubud until the early 20th century. It was built in the 18th century. It’s a charming attraction known for its traditional Balinese architecture and intricate carvings.

Today, it serves as a cultural center and a venue for traditional dance performances, which you can book for evening entertainment. Keep in mind it’s also referred to as Puri Saren Agung if you see that somewhere and get confused.

Conscious traveler: Offerings, Balinese hinduism, Bali, Indonesia

The Ubud Water Palace, also known as Pura Taman Saraswati, is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Saraswati, who is the goddess of knowledge, music, and art. It was built in the early 20th century by the prince of Ubud.

Unluckily for us, when we visited, it was closed for maintenance, so we never got to enter! Even so, the temple is surrounded by a beautiful lotus pond, which makes it a popular spot for photography. It’s also known for its intricate carvings and traditional Balinese architecture.

I suggest going to Ubud Royal Palace first and then the Water Palace as it’s closer to the next attraction: Kajeng Rice Fields.

Kajeng Rice Fields

Kajeng Rice Fields is a beautiful hidden gem in the centre of Ubud, or at least they were when we visited! Currently, I think they have become better known, but people still opt to visit the larger rice terraces and forget about these.

Located in the heart of Ubud, these are picturesque rice fields where you can walk around and engage with local farmers. It was one of the highlights of our trips to Ubud.

Ubud 4-day Itinerary: Kajeng Rice Fields

Kajeng rice fields

These rice fields join the larger Juwuk Manis Rice Fields, although there is a shorter circular path you can follow, which I recommend. Otherwise, you’ll end up way out of town, near the rice fields you visited at breakfast at the end of Campuhan Ridge, but on the other side of the river!

There are a few warungs and restaurants attached to hotels located within these rice fields, which are perfect for grabbing lunch. A favorite is Sweet Orange Warung; I suggest stopping by and refilling while taking in the tranquil surroundings.

Sacred Monkey Forest

  • Closes at 5:00 pm

Once back in central Ubud, heading to the Sacred Monkey Forest is the next best thing. You can walk; it’s simply at the end of one long road: JL. Monkey Forest. However, your feet might be tired by this point, so it’s easiest to jump in a taxi.

Ubud Monkey Forest, Ubud, Bali

Ubud Monkey Forest

Sacred Monkey Forest is a Hindu temple complex set within the lush jungle and home to hundreds of macaque monkeys. They aren’t the friendliest and will rob you blind if given the opportunity; they like phones and hats, so be warned!

There are other animals here as well, such as deer and many beautiful birds. That said, the monkeys are cute, especially the babies.

Ubud Art Market

Closes are 6:00 pm

The final point of call on your first day in Ubud is the Art Market or street market. You likely would have seen it when visiting the Royal Palace as it’s directly opposite, but I’ve left it till last so you don’t have to lug your purchases around with you all day; you’re welcome!

The Ubud Art Market is excellent. You’ll find all things boho and crafty: food, clothes, souvenirs, jewellery and nick-nacks of all sorts. If you’re planning on buying, be sure to pack some reusable bags in your day packs. Bali has a huge pollution problem!

For dinner, there are a few great places nearby. Depending on how much local food you ate during the day, you might want something closer to home. Some suggestions are Milk & Madu, La Barraca, or Taco & Grill.

Ubud 4-Day Itinerary: Day 2

Ubud Bike Tour: Tegalalang Rice Terraces – Villages and Local Crafts – Balinese massage in Ubud

Ubud Bike tour

Tegallalang Rice terraces near Ubud, Bali

Tegalalang rice terraces near Ubud, Bali

One of the best things we did in Bali was go on a scooter road trip around the island. Although it’s not quite the same as a bicycle, we were able to visit authentic Bali towns, explore rural villages, enjoy beautiful scenery, and learn about Balinese culture and traditions.

If you’re only visiting Bali for a few days, a Bali bike tour should be top of your list for all the reasons mentioned above! You’ll get a local guide who knows the area and can guide you through untouched parts of Ubud. Visiting such areas will be a truly fulfilling experience!

The best bike tours include visits to volcanoes, rural villages, waterfalls, and the famous UNESCO rice terraces; some are even on e-bikes, so make the most of your day by choosing one of those that include these attractions.

I recommend the Downhill Bike Tour with Rice Terraces and Meal.

Balinese Massage

Campuhan Ridge walk, Sinar Spa, Ubud

Sinar Spa, Ubud

There’s nothing better than being pampered, and I love a good massage. After your day of riding, if you feel like you need a little R&R, and let’s be honest, you probably will, head out for a Balinese massage!

It’s a traditional Indonesian healing technique that combines elements of acupressure, reflexology, and aromatherapy. It is a type of deep-tissue massage that typically involves long, sweeping strokes, deep kneading, and gentle stretching of the muscles.

The history of Balinese massage dates back to ancient times when it was used as a form of healing for warriors and royalty. But, these days, it has become a popular spa treatment around the world.

The best part is that in Bali, Balinese massages are super affordable! We went to one at the end of Kajeng Village just before the start of the rice fields: Juwuk Manis Massage Ubud.

Ubud 4-Day Itinerary: Day 3

Purification Ceremony – Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu – Goa Gajah Cave Sanctuary

The best way to complete day three is to hire a scooter and go about the sites independently.

This will give you time at each attraction without feeling rushed. If you don’t fancy renting a scooter in Bali, you can always hire a private driver for the day. Luckily, this is very affordable in Bali, and many companies offer this service.

Purification Ceremony

Ubud 4-day Itinerary: Purification Ceremony

Day three and you absolutely have to experience a Balinese Purification Ceremony . These are known as Melukat ceremonies, which are believed to purify the mind, body, and soul. It’s an essential part of the Hindu Balinese culture, which dominates the island of Gods.

There are many locations throughout the island where it’s possible to partake in this ceremony, the most popular being Tirta Empul temple, a wonderful temple in Southeast Asia . We decided to visit Taman Beji Waterfall and think it’s one of the better spots.

A traditional ceremony includes prayers, offerings, and purification rituals. They differ slightly depending on location, but at Beji Waterfall, one of the final steps is to enter the waterfall and scream as loudly as possible to release negative energies.

It was a surreal experience and one we highly recommend!

Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu

Gunung Kawi, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. You can see ancient stone sculptures in this photo

About 15km outside of central Ubud is this ancient water temple. It’s built around a natural spring and is another site for purification rituals; when we visited, many locals were bathing and performing the ritual. However, we didn’t see too many tourists; it’s definitely a more tranquil temple that is very suitable for conscious travelers who like to explore more of the beaten path places.

The small temple complex is surrounded by lush tropical gardens and a pond filled with koi fish, the reason for visiting. It’s a lovely temple, although it is unkept in comparison to some of the more significant sites.

You are able to explore the temple complex, the entrance fee is 30,000 IDR (about £1.50), but keep in mind that to enter beyond the pond, proper dress is required. It’s recommended to wear a sarong or sash (included in the fee), so make sure you pack one. Otherwise, it is possible to rent these from outside the temple or purchase them from the nearby shops.

Alternatively, you can visit Titra Empul temple, which isn’t far away (or both if you have time).

Goa Gajah Cave Sanctuary

The last stop for the day should be Goa Gajah Cave Sanctuary, also known as the Elephant Cave. It’s a historic cave temple located in Bedulu Village near central Ubud, so it’s a nice place to finish the day.

It’s believed to have been built in the 9th century as a spiritual place for meditation and worship. The cave is covered in carvings and sculptures that depict various Hindu and Buddhist symbols and mythological creatures.

Interestingly, the entrance to the cave is designed to resemble the mouth of a demon, with a large statue of a demon-like creature guarding the gate, which costs 15,000 IDR to enter.

It’s a popular tourist destination and used to be on the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE tentative list so it would be a great addition to your Ubud itinerary.

Ubud 4-Day Itinerary: Day 4

Waterfall & Temple Visits: Pura Lempuyang Temple – Tirta Gangga (Water Palace) – Tirta Empul Temple – Tukad Cepung Waterfall

For your final day, I suggest booking a temple and waterfall tour. There are many available, but try to book one, which will take you to the remaining must-visit sites, such as Pura Lempuyang temple, Tirta Gangga, and a waterfall. If you haven’t already visited Tirta Empul temple, today is a good day to head there.

I recommend the Bali Instagram: Gate of Heaven Temple Tour , which includes all the above locations.

Alternatively, you could continue exploring independently on a scooter. However, you’ll be covering quite a lot of distance, and so a car is better. Another option is a private customizable day tour.

Pura Lempuyang Temple

Better known as Heaven Gate, this is a temple to visit in the morning before the clouds set in above Mount Agung, Bali’s tallest volcano. It’s a small temple, and the main reason to visit it is to grab a shot between the gates with the volcano in the background.

Tirta Gangga & Tirta Empul

Tirta Empul near Ubud, Bali

Tirta Empul, Ubud, Bali

These two are beautiful water temples; Tirta Gangga is famous for its stepping stones and koi fish, while Tirta Empul is where you’ll find the majority of purification ceremonies taking place. They are both bust attractions, although still lovely to visit, just expect crowds so you’re not disappointed!

Tukad Cepung Waterfall

One of our favorite waterfalls, Tukad Cepung, takes a little work to reach, but it’s worthwhile. Nestled within the jungle in a fissure cave, you’ll find the waterfall has a charming appeal. It’s surrounded by huge boulders, with a small stream running through the lush overgrowth.

The whole site is quite lovely to explore, with a few other smaller waterfalls around. Back at the top, there are a handful of local warungs with seating overlooking the canopy below.

Other significant waterfalls to visit include Tibumana Waterfall, Tegenungan Waterfall, and Kanto Lampo Waterfall.

Where To Stay In Ubud

Ubud is a fantastic location in Bali to base yourself for an epic holiday. It’s central, an hour from the airport, and surrounded by lush jungle and ancient temples. It’s the cultural hub of Bali and a very relaxing spot to visit.

To make sure you have the best holiday, it’s essential to choose the suitable accommodation for you. There are lots of options, from guest houses and hostels aimed at backpackers and budget travelers to luxury villas and resorts with private pools and breathtaking views.

Since Ubud is in the hills, it’s worth remembering that it’s not close to the ocean. Due to this, I suggest booking accommodation with a swimming pool if possible!

To help you choose, I’ve found three options to browse through, depending on your budget.

  • Top-end option: Five elements Retreat Bali
  • Mid-range option: Parvati Retreat
  • Budget option: Jero Ratna Homestay

Best Time To Visit Ubud

Tirta Empul near Ubud, Bali

Tirta Empul near Ubud, Bali

Bali has two seasons: wet and dry. It’s possible to visit throughout the year, although during the wet season, expect short sudden bursts of rainfall, usually in the afternoons and evenings. It can be a beautiful time to visit, especially if you’re looking for wildlife encounters as they become more active this time of year.

For beach holidays, consider visiting during the dry period, so you’re not disappointed. Keep in mind that during peak season, the price of activities and attractions does increase.

The peak season runs from April to September, with the wet season starting in October and lasting until May.

Are 4 Days Enough Time In Ubud?

Four days are enough to visit the top sites in Ubud. It’s not enough for a whole holiday to Bali, but for Ubud, you will be fine. Generally, a 10 to 14-day holiday in Bali is sufficient to have a fulfilling trip but if you like to travel slowly , consider staying for at least a month.

How To Get To Ubud From Airport

Ubud is around 1 hour 15 minutes from Bali’s international airport. There are numerous ways to reach the town, and it’s not necessary to pre-book a transfer, although this can save time and hassle.

Private Car Hire

A lot of visitors will opt for a private car transfer. This is the most convenient way of reaching Ubud but usually the most expensive. However, Bali is affordable, so even a costly option isn’t necessarily going to be too expensive.

I recommend this private Bali airport transfer from Kirana Tour.

Ride-Sharing Apps

When we are in Bali, we use Gojek to book our taxis. They work like Uber; however, they are frowned upon by the local Bluebird taxi services. Sometimes, they refuse to enter the airport, so if you plan to use them, you might have to walk to the car park to meet them.

Personally, I think they are the best way to get from A to B. You will know exactly what you’re paying before you travel, and they are readily available.

Bluebird Taxis is the local taxi service; in all honesty, we have never used them, so I can’t tell you for sure if they are good. From reading reviews, they seem to be reliable and reputable. You can grab them from the taxi rank outside the airport.

Airport Shuttle

If you have already booked your accommodation, they will likely offer an airport shuttle service. This is usually the most cost-effective option, although the Gojek could work out cheaper depending on your accommodation.

Some hotels will offer a free airport transfer; for others, you will have to pay an additional charge. If you choose this option, you’ll have to email the hotel before your arrival to arrange the shuttle.

How To Explore Ubud

Ubud 4-day Itinerary: Rice field at the end of Camphuan Ridge

Rice terraces at the end of Campuhan Ridge

Central Ubud is pretty easy to explore on foot; in fact, it’s the best way, as any other method is not practical. Traffic can get nasty, especially during rush hours.

For exploring attractions outside of central Ubud, renting a scooter is the most efficient.

However, some of you might prefer something else. It’s also possible to use taxis to take you to sites or, as I mentioned earlier, hire a private driver for the day. Some people also arrange for a private driver for the entirety of their holiday; this is also a feasible option.

Finally, you can use tours to explore Ubud, which includes transfers to and from attractions.

In Summary: Ubud 4-days Itinerary

As always, I leave you with a few final thoughts for your 4-days in Ubud itinerary. The biggest takeaway is to remember that Ubud is a popular destination, and you must prepare for crowds, especially if you visit during peak season.

As for the attractions I’ve listed in this Ubud itinerary, and after spending a lot of time in Bali, I honestly believe that they are the best sites to visit if you only have four days. They will provide you with a variety of cultural, educational, and fun experiences so you will have a fulfilling holiday.

Remember, Bali has a unique culture, and it’s important to respect their religion; always cover your knees when visiting sacred sites. We loved eating in the warungs, and if you’re a little foodie like us, be sure to check them out too; there is one in central Ubud we recommend: Warung Makan Bu Rus!

Where is East Bali

East Bali Tour

When visiting Bali, most visitors will stay in southern Bali. Many visitors plan day trips to East Bali as it’s easily accessible from places like Ubud, Denpasar, and some of the other southern areas like Kuta and Uluwatu.

According to Wikitravel , East Bali is a region of Bali that includes many beach towns, volcanos, and some of Bali’s most popular temples and palaces. More notable towns found in East Bali include Amed, Candidasa, Padang Bai, and Klungkung.

From popular destinations in southern Bali like Sanur it can take anywhere from 1 hour to several hours to reach your destination in East Bali depending on where you decide on visiting.

Booking an East Bali Tour

East Bali Tour

If staying at a hotel in Bali that does tours, an East Bali Tour will usually be one of the options. We stayed in Ubud and Amed and both our hotels had day trips to East Bali.

If like me, you like to book trips well in advance,  Viator, offers several East Bali Tours .

Below are a few specific East Bali Tours. • Best of East Bali Tour •  Heaven of East Bali Private Guided Tour •  Amed Sunset Tour – East Bali Day Trip •  Lempuyang Temple and East Bali Private Tour

I do recommend some of the private tours. In our experience, you get a personal driver and they drive you to each attraction. You can spend as little or as much time as you want at each attraction.

East Bali Tour

bali tour from ubud

If you are looking for a unique and somewhat off the beaten path experience in Bali, I do recommend looking into an East Bali Tour.

Some of Bali’s most famous attractions are located in East Bali. Lempuyang, also known as the Heaven Gate Temple is one of the most famous Instagram spots in Bali. Tirta Gangga is another one of Bali’s most photographed temples. In East Bali you can even stop at a coffee plantation to try Luwak Coffee and experience so much more.

When we booked our East Bali Tour it included a stop at Lempuyang, Tirta Ganga, and the water palace of Taman Ujung. But with a private driver we were able to stop at the coffee plantation and even check out the rice fields at Maha Gangga Valley.

Our day started early as our driver picked us up at 7:30 am in Amed. Below is our East Bali itinerary, this was one of the highlights from our trip to Bali, Indonesia.

Lempuyang: Heaven Gate Temple

East Bali Tour

The first stop on our East Bali Tour from Amed was Lempuyang, also know as the Heaven Gate Temple. Perched on top of a mountain adjacent from the majestic Mt. Agung, this temple offers breathtaking views and is considered one of Bali’s most famous Instagram spots, unfortunately!

Many visitors coming from southern Bali or places like Ubud start their day early to get to Lempuyang. From Amed, it was about 45 minutes.

At the bottom of the mountain, there is a parking area and shuttle buses that take you to the temple. The shuttle bus was around IDR 50,000 roundtrip and there was an additional fee to enter the temple.

Once at Lempuyang, visitors can walk the temple grounds but there are some rules that must be met prior to entering.

These rules are found on signs throughout the temple and are as followed:

– All Visitors have to be purified by holy water – Women are not permitted to enter when menstruating – Sarong is mandatory  – Shoulder and Back must be covered. – Do not climb the walls, platforms, or statues – If intending to pray, you are allowed inside the temple – Drones are prohibited – Avoid Yoga poses or any position where your feet are raised – Positive Thoughts and Language – No kissing – Baby before 105 days are not permitted to enter

Once all the rules are met, you can access the grounds area. Many visitors come to Lempuyang to take that iconic Bali shot of the temple gates with Mt. Agung in the background and their perfect reflection. I’ll be honest, the reflection is not water, it’s a mirror that someone holds under your camera for that perfect reflection.

Since this is such a popular spot and one of Bali’s most famous Instagram spots, the queue to get your photo taken can be anywhere from 1 to 4 hours.

This was definitely not worth waiting for, so we just walked around and took photos before making our way back down the mountain.

Tunas Bali Luwak Coffee

East Bali Tour

Luwak coffee is a controversial topic and I don’t really support coffee plantations that have Luwak Coffee.

For those that do not know, Luwak coffee is a special and rare coffee that uses coffee beans that is basically been “pooped” out of an animal known as the Asian Palm Civet. Prior to visiting Bali, I knew that these animals were abused around the world in the coffee industry. Just something I cannot get behind.

That being said, our driver insisted that we stop at one of Bali’s most well known coffee plantations, Tunas Bali Luwak Coffee.

The staff here was knowledgeable and you get to sit down and sample wonderful coffee flavors. The staff brought us a tray of 20 or so various coffee and teas to try. Honestly, it was all very good, we have everything from Mangosteen tea to Ginger Coffee.

Start saving your ideas

Maha Gangga Valley

East Bali Tour

When visiting East Bali and interested in seeing rice terraces, then Maha Gangga Valley is a great option. Not far from Tirta Gangga is the touristy hot spot but very beautiful area of Maha Gangga Valley.

Maha Gangga Valley, is another Bali Instagram location as the scenery is gorgeous and there are many fun things within Maha Gangga Valley that offer great photo opportunities, like giant swings and traditional houses.

We visited Maha Gangga Valley to see the rice terraces. Although nothing compared to Jatiluwih Rice Terraces , it was still fun to see the rice fields and explore Maha Gangga Valley.

Tirta Gangga

East Bali Tour

Perhaps one of Bali’s most famous and beautiful water palaces, Tirta Gangga is one of East Bali’s most prized and popular attractions.

Tirta Gangga is a beautiful water palace known for water features, architecture, and nature. I loved the perfect blend of nature and water. Visitors are able to walk the stones across the beautiful ponds and even feed the Koi fish.

Taman Ujung

bali tour from ubud

One of Bali’s most underrated attractions is the water temple of Taman Ujung. I say underrated, because after weeks of research, I never read nor heard about Taman Ujung. It just happened to be on my East Bali itinerary.

Taman Ujung is one of Bali’s hidden gems that I think will surprise any visitor due to the amazing surrounding landscape, beautiful gardens, and the stunning white palace created on an island.

Taman Ujung was built in 1909 by the Karangasem King as a retreat.

Today visitors can walk inside the palace and tour the grounds of the beautiful Taman Ujung water palace.

300*250

An East Bali tour from Amed, Ubud, or southern Bali offers an unforgettable experience for anyone looking to immerse themselves in Bali’s culture, history, and natural beauty. From waking up early to explore or take a photo of Bali’s Heaven Gate to sampling coffee at a coffee plantation, an East Bai tour provides visitors with a glimpse of some attractions and sites on this side of the island. Whether you are like me and love history or want to take fun Instagram photos on swings with a stunning background, this day trip to East Bali will surely leave you with a deeper appreciation to explore more of this side of Bali.

The best of Bali: top ways to find your own piece of paradise

Mark Eveleigh

Oct 29, 2023 • 9 min read

July 7, 2018: A male surfer inside the barrel of a wave at Padang Padang.

With its unique Hindu culture, dramatic tropical landscapes and long tradition of delightful hospitality, Bali is one of the most exciting places for activities on the planet.

Whether you like to surf, practice yoga, trek on volcanoes, dive pristine reefs or go white-water rafting, Bali offers all sorts of dynamic and fascinating experiences. On the “island of the gods,” you’ll find an opportunity for relaxation and pampering, too – it's not all about adventure and adrenaline.

To get you started, here's our pick of the best things to do on a trip to Bali.

Grab a surfboard and catch the Bali pipeline

Bali is celebrated as one of the top spots for surfing on the planet. While the island is legendary for world-class waves such as Uluwatu, Padang Padang (“the Balinese Pipeline”) and the aptly named Impossibles, countless other spots are perfect for intermediate surfers or beginners.

Canggu and Kuta Beach are the best hubs on the island for novice surfers. Canggu has plenty of board rental stands and surf schools offering lessons; check out Echo Beach for relatively mellow waves where you can find your feet. More board rental places and surf schools can be found along Kuta Beach, and the waves here are – under normal circumstances – even more chilled for learning.

However, a lot of beginners find out the hard way that high tide at Kuta brings steep, heavy shore-breakers that are often challenging even for experienced surfers. Aim to have your lessons close to low tide and save the tougher waves for later in your surfing career.

If you'd rather escape the crowds, Medewi in West Bali is one of Bali’s least-known waves. The point itself is covered in boulders, so it’s best for intermediate or experienced surfers, but you'll find 10km (6.2mi) of sandy-bottom beach breaks on either side of Medewi that rarely see another surfer.

Raft the white waters of the Ayung Valley

Jungle rivers cascade down from the volcanic highlands in the center of Bali, carving great ravines that are one of the most unexpected features of Bali’s geography. The southern hills are quite densely populated with these rivers, and rafting is often the best way to experience still-unspoiled jungle canyons.

Bali’s rivers may not offer the world’s most challenging rapids, but what you lose in adrenaline, you gain in the sheer pleasure of seeing the Ubud area from a totally unexpected angle. It’s hard to believe that such pristine forest valleys can exist just a stone’s throw from bustling Ubud town.

Mason Adventures is one of the most reputable rafting companies and runs the longest rafting trips along the Ayung Valley, clocking in at 12km (7.5mi). You can combine an Ayung Valley rafting trip with a 30km (18.5mi) mountain bike tour that runs almost entirely downhill.

Go on “safari” in Bali’s wild west

It's different in West Bali. Away from the crowds, you can watch in awe as critically endangered Bali starlings flit overhead while wild ebony leaf monkeys loop through the canopy and giant monitor lizards flick their tongues to taste the air. Herds of Menjangan deer even come right up to the beach bungalows – they’re famous for coming to cool their heels in the shallows.

You can only visit West Bali National Park with a guide, but even if you’re traveling independently outside the reserve, it’s impossible to shake the impression that West Bali has something fundamentally “wild” about it. To catch the mood, try trekking in the surprisingly arid hills of the cactus country or along the vineyard-filled north coast, or watch macaques run free at the many temples in the area.

Just east of the national park boundary, The Menjangan is the most unexpectedly wild resort on the entire island. Even if you’re not staying here, you can rent cycles and book guided walks and horse-riding and birdwatching tours.

Align your chakras and live the yogi dream

Yoga has been practiced on the Hindu island of Bali for over 1000 years, but the boom years for commercial yoga began in the early years of this century. Ubud in particular has made a name for itself as Southeast Asia's yoga capital.

Yoga Barn , which began with one humble yoga shall (practice space) in 2007, has grown to become a fixture on the Ubud scene, with seven studios running a whopping 130 classes a week. There’s a restaurant, a cafe, a yoga store and even accommodations for students who come here for teacher training or specialist courses.

More low-key, offering only 60 classes a week, Radiantly Alive has become a firm favorite with local yogis in the know. It’s located on a quiet alleyway in the old town and is popular with students who enjoy a more intimate, communal atmosphere. Radiantly Alive also has a yoga studio in Canggu.

Dive Bali’s tropical waters surrounded by splendor

Lying at the center of the Coral Triangle, Indonesia boasts some of the richest marine habitats on the planet, and Bali has its share of top diving and snorkeling spots. The entire north coast, which is spared the waves of the south, is a watery wonderland for diving and snorkeling aficionados. The island of Nusa Lembongan is a good place to start; Bali Hai runs diving day trips to “Manta Alley” and other local sites, as well as full PADI certification courses.

Menjangan Island off Bali’s northwest tip also offers world-class diving without the crowds. You'll see the entire spectrum of reef fish alongside turtles, reef sharks and, if you’re lucky, dolphins and whale sharks. The Menjangan rents kayaks and can arrange guided diving and snorkeling trips to the island.

Chill out at a private Bali beach club

Bali is famed for its beaches, and the island has a surprising number of wild, often deserted strands alongside busy “town beaches” such as Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu. If you tire of the crowded sand, a day at a private beach club can be an unforgettable experience.

Potato Head in Seminyak has become a Balinese icon. Much more than just a beach club, this lively spot has two infinity pools, a music venue and several landmark restaurants, including Ijen, Bali’s first zero-waste restaurant. Along the beach from Potato Head, Mrs Sippy boasts Bali’s biggest saltwater pool and brands itself as a Mediterranean-inspired oasis.

Over at Canggu, Finns Beach Club has become a Bali institution, with five bars (including two sunken pool bars), three restaurants and a live music space, all spread across a beautifully designed property between two pools and the ocean.

If you’re in Sanur, check out Byrdhouse Beach Club , a vibrant extension to the lovely Segara Village Hotel , run by the same local family since the 1950s. Byrdhouse features a 25m-long infinity pool, spacious beachfront lawns, quality dining spaces and what is probably the best Jacuzzi cocktail bar you’ll ever find.

Pamper yourself in a holistic Bali spa

Whether you choose to bliss out with an après-surf massage on the beach or have a marathon all-day pampering session in a five-star spa, Bali takes vacation relaxation to the next level. Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan and Fivelements Retreat near Ubud are open to non-guests and rank among the best spa and wellness retreats on the planet.

The Sacred River Spa at the Four Seasons has it all: spa treatments, traditional healers and chakra ceremonies in spellbinding surroundings overlooking the Ayung Valley. Fivelements specializes in holistic treatments inspired by Balinese traditions, with a focus on plant-based cuisine, sacred arts and romantic day experiences that are perfect for couples. Both spots also offer yoga and other wellness packages.

Glo Spa Bali is also highly recommended for its massages and beauty treatments, which attract plenty of repeat visitors. If you’re traveling on a budget, head to one of the Yes Spa Bali establishments in Kuta or Legian, where you can enjoy excellent traditional Balinese massages for less than US$8.

Walk with pink buffaloes on a paddy field tour

Water buffalo have become increasingly rare in Bali since mechanized farm tools took the place of plows, but you can still spot a few of Bali's rare pink buffalo hard at work in the fields, particularly in West Bali. Join a half-day guided paddy walk with pink buffaloes near Pekutatan for fascinating insights into the role that these magnificent creatures play in the rice-growing cycle, and the complex rituals behind rice farming on the island.

Woman watching the sun rise from the top of Mt Batur

Climb up Batur volcano at sunrise

The 1717m (5633ft) summit of the Batur volcano is perhaps the best place to take in the sunrise on an island that Indian statesman Jawaharlal Nehru called the “morning of the world.” From the crater rim, the view takes in Mt. Agung – the island’s highest peak and the spiritual abode of the gods in Balinese culture – and Mt. Rinjani on distant Lombok .

You’ll have to set your alarm incredibly early to witness the splendor. Most tours start with a hotel pickup between 1am and 2am so hikers can complete the 3.5km (2.2mi) trek and be up at the summit by sunrise.

Photograph Asia’s most colorful traditional fishing fleet

The fleet of selerek (traditional Balinese fishing boats) at Perancak inlet are one of the most astounding – and least known – sights on the entire island. Looking like day-glow Viking longboats with curiously decorated crow’s nests (many shaped like chariots) and longtail engines spiking out from their vibrantly colorful hulls, these boats will astound any visitor who takes the trouble to reach this unspoiled corner of West Bali.

Overview of flooded rice terraces near Ubud

Stroll across the emerald expanses of Jatiluwih Paddies

Lying just 15km (9.3mi) north of Ubud, the pretty rice terraces of Tegallalang are a prime tourist destination. But with each passing year, more development comes to Tegallalang, and at sunset especially, it’s hard to soak up the beauty of the valley with all the noise from honking tour buses.

For a better introduction to the great paddy landscapes that cover less-visited parts of Bali, head for the immense Jatiluwih terraces, around 40km (25 miles) northwest. This idyllic stretch of countryside is perfect for wandering alone, but consider hiring a local guide if you want to understand the intricacies of the 1000-year-old subak irrigation system , which is inscribed on Unesco’s cultural heritage list.

7 Days Bali Itinerary: The Perfect Guide for First Time Visitors

7 Days Bali Itinerary

  • 8 Pinterest

Has the Island of the Gods been on your Travel Bucket List for the longest of times? As one of the most sought-after destinations in the world for travelers, we’ve put together a 7 days Bali itinerary for first-timers, covering everything you need to know, from places to eat, where to stay and things to do in Bali .

To ensure you’re not constantly on the road, we’ve conveniently planned this itinerary, splitting seven days across the not-to-miss parts in Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, Mount Batur, Uluwatu and the Nusa Islands.

Choose one neighborhood as base camp, or pick one or two other districts in between. (Bali is renowned for its out-of-this-world accommodations, so we say take advantage!)

Go beach-hopping, explore jungle settings and spiritual meccas, hike to the top of a volcano, join a cooking class and hang ten at a vibey beach bar.

Dine at restaurants with insane views or settings, and start your day off right at one of Bali’s famous trendy cafes.

When is the best time to travel to Bali? With year-round sunshine, any month of the year equates to an incredible holiday, but between May and September is when the island experiences the least rain. (Keen snorkelers and avid divers, water visibility is best at this time of year.)

Here’s everything you need to know about getting around, what to do and see, and where to stay and eat for one week in Bali paradise!

Day 1: Seminyak

Seminyak in Bali, Indonesia

Kick things off with quintessential Bali: beach, views and food!

Considered one of the coolest neighborhoods, Seminyak is a little upscale and a lotta fun, with epic beaches and clubs, busy boutiques, buzzing bars, and a mixed crowd of families, couples and travelers after a good time.

Around the corner from Kuta and Canggu, it’s a prime area for first-timers to make your base for the next seven days. It’s easy to get around, as well as to book day trips or Bali tours from the many operators in the area.

After arriving at Denpasar Airport, hail down a taxi or pre-organize airport transfers in Bali before your arrival for added convenience. Check-in is typically after 2 PM, but certain accommodations allow an earlier time or luggage drop-off.

Lunch at a banging Balinese beach club (1.5hrs)

Mari beach club in Bali

In tropical utopia, is there really anywhere else you’d rather be after touchdown other than breathing in the oceanic landscapes?

After a long flight, refueling on food is always a good idea. For your first meal, there’s no better first encounter than lunch at a Bali beach club — the island is famous for them, right?

Mari Beach Club epitomizes everything we love about them: light woods, bamboo accents, white Balinese umbrellas, insane pools and an ocean so blue in front it belongs on the cover of a travel mag.

Different seating areas are spread across its beachfront and pool areas, from VIP bungalows to seats on the hillside terrace.

Poke bowls, sushi, sharing plates and local dishes, the menu is fresh and diverse. Order a glass of champers or prosecco, pinching yourselves as a reminder you’re actually here!

Explore the town and do some shopping (1hr)

Kim Soo Bali

While there’s loads to love about Seminyak’s beachscapes, it’s the quintessential Balinese boutique stores that grab hold of shopaholic’s hearts!

Get familiar with your local surroundings while exploring and dropping a dollar (or ten), walking along Jalan Raya Seminyak and around the town.

For Balinese homeware pinned on countless Pinterest boards, head to Kara Home Living and Kim Soo (there’s an amazing cafe here, too). Nyaman Gallery is a fab contemporary art space.

For all surfing needs, pop into Drifter Surf , or there’s a Quicksilver at Seminyak Square — on that note, a hyper-local outdoor market sets up around the square here, too.

Shop, wine and dine at Bali Boat Shed (for all casual beach day vibes). Get something tailored now so you have enough time to collect it one week later at The Bali Tailor .

P.S. If you’d rather get straight into Bali’s beach vibes, ditch the shopping and continue hanging ten at the beach clubs, like the popular Potato Head Beach Club .

Time for a coffee refuel (30mins)

Revolver Bali

Before heading back to your accommodation to get ready for your first night in Bali, knock back a quick espresso or artisanal roast from a coffee specialist in Seminyak!

Espresso martini, anyone (you’re on vacation)? Acclaimed Revolver is one of Bali’s famous coffee shops!

It’s a literal bean-to-cup experience at The Koop Cafe. Taking their coffee seriously, they’re not just baristas but growers, processors and roasters!

Order homemade chunky cookies and espresso ice cream from The Coffee Cartel .

How delicious does a pear elixir cold brew sound? How I Met Coffee is an expert in manual drips!

Eat your way through the local restaurants and warungs at Eat Street (2hrs)

Ultimo in Bali

With something to tantalize all sorts of tastebuds, do things the authentic Seminyak way at Eat Street!

Locally referred to as Jalan Laksmana, this foodie hotspot offers tons of variety, from the cuisine to the type of dining establishments. There are chilled-out eateries or fancier fine-dining options, cafes, bars and warungs (Indonesian food stalls).

Warung Nia is one of the biggest and most popular; discover seafood in abundance along Eat Street; and there are a handful of vegan restaurants.

Trendy establishments include Motel Mexicola , Sea Circus , Ultimo , Neon Palms and Barbacoa . Enjoy top-notch service from Chandi — “a gastronomic twist on Pan Asian cuisine.”

Insider tip: Swap Eat Street for a local night food tour in Seminyak.

End night one with drinks with a view

WooBar Bali

Still have some energy left from all the excitement of Day One? Stay on Eat Street and extend your eating into drinking at vibey Motel Mexicola, transforming into a discotech later on!

Change locales and enjoy a glass of wine with a view from a rooftop bar, like Double-Six Rooftop or Above Rooftop Lounge and Bar .

Unwind under the stars at a beach bar, and legendary Ku De Ta or WooBar are both the perfect settings (and always busy).

Inspired by the 1950s, step into the dimly lit, ambient The Shady Flamingo and let cocktails and great music take you into the night!

Day 2: Canggu

Canggu in Bali, Indonesia

Ask any local or expat where the cool kids (and yogis) hang out beachside, and they’ll answer Canggu!

Boasting laid-back vibes, amazing beaches, an avalanche of vegan cafes and bohemian moments around every corner (especially at the markets), today is all about finding your Bali flow.

Catch up on your TLSea, learn to surf, feast on seafood at a trendy beach club, witness the sun setting above an ocean temple, and move into the night at one of the ambient bars with banging views and tunes; it’s the perfect introduction to this island paradise.

(With a strong yoga community, the places to stay in Canggu reflect this. If this is more your cup of green tea, make Canggu base camp.)

Start the day the right way with brekkie at a trendy Bali cafe (1hr)

Kynd Community in Bali

Is brekkie your favorite meal of the day? Bali’s breakfast scene is on-point, and there’s a reason why cafes worldwide are “Bali-inspired.”

If your accommodation includes breakfast, skip this one, but even if it does, you may want to consider breakfasting at a trendy Bali cafe. Stick to Seminyak or if you’re not yet starving, save it for Canggu.

It’s tropicana pastel pink bliss at vegan-based Kynd Community (with a cafe in both Seminyak and Canggu). Add an extra dollop of collagen powder to your morning smoothie, and the menu features bircher jars, avo toast, brunch bowls, acai bowls and more.

P.S. This spot is ideal for a girl’s trip!

Shop the markets for Balinese treasures (1.5hrs)

Love Anchor in Bali

Boho-loving souls, you’re in the right place to shop for all sorts of trinkets, handmade goods and flea market favorites in hipster Canggu, so before you hit the beaches, sweep in a quick peek-a-boo at the markets.

Love Anchor is, without a doubt, the coolest bazaar in town, home to over 50 stalls selling the trendiest items on the block. Operating daily, the weekends are reserved for the fashionistas, but on any given day, pick up homeware, jewelry, clothing and decor.

A playground of local artisans and farmers, the Samadi Sunday Market (operating Sundays from 8 AM to 4 PM) is a picnic basket full of organic and ethically sourced goods.

Vintage-lovers, every last Saturday of the month, Old Man’s is the place to be for second-hand shopping!

Or, there’s the daily Bali Niki Natural Art Market near Batu Bolong Beach.

Learn to surf or chill out on the beaches (2.5hrs)

beaches in Canggu, Bali

Now that breakfast is out the way, and any of your spend-happy travel party members have got their morning shopping fix, it’s finally time for what you came here for … the island-style beaches!

It’s impossible to visit all of Bali’s beaches in one vacation. Day 2 is for exploring the beaches in and around Canggu.

The crowds of young and old swarm to Batu Bolong (it’s probably the beach with the most amenities), Berawa Beach is home to Finns Beach Club (and fun surf), Nelayan Beach is where to escape the crowds and the locals, and expats and surfing crowds favor black-sand Pererenan Beach.

A renowned surfing mecca, swap beach lazies for surf yayzies at some of the best surf spots in all of the island. Echo Beach is reserved for the pros and Batu Bolong Beach has ideal conditions for novice surfers.

If you’ve always wanted to learn to surf, there are plenty of surf schools at Canggu’s beaches.

Feast on a seafood lunch at one of Canggu’s epic beach clubs (1.5hrs)

Sol Rooftop in Bali

With your feet in the sand, endless blue hue views and the smell of sea salt drifting through the air, what better location for a seafood feast than at an epic beachfront destination?

We suggest one of Canggu’s beach clubs for lunch, delivering all the above!

Try not to gasp when entering the stunning La Brisa — we recommend the char-grilled octopus (and a charcuterie board to start).

Slurp back fresh oysters or share a plate of lobster nachos at stylish The Lawn .

Chill out on the hanging nets over the beachfront pool at Sol Rooftop , enjoying dishes like grilled king prawns or scallops with a view!

For a fusion of Mediterranean and Asian flavors, Cafe Del Mar is unparalleled, and this is the second location of Ibiza’s iconic beach club!

Grab coffee at a specialty coffee house (30mins)

Blacklist Coffee Roasters in Bali

Lying in the sunshine all day can take it out of you — true story — especially if you’ve spent a couple hours surfing or water sporting it out! Get a kick of energy with a caffeine boost at a specialty coffee house, then make your way back to your accommodation to de-salt from your beach day and get dressed for the evening.

As if the interiors over at Miel weren’t enough, the speciality coffee matches on every level! (Digital nomads, this is a wonderful environment to catch up on any work.)

See what coffee art arrives on your table at Hungry Bird Coffee where your cuppa is made by the Indonesian latte art champion!

The coffee concoctions from Mimpi Grocery are extra imaginative — hello, iced espresso with passion fruit syrup, fresh lemon juice and tonic water.

A frozen reserve coffee made from rare premium beans? Blacklist Coffee Roasters hails from Australia, so you know the coffee is gonna be good.

Visit Tanah Lot Temple for sunset (1hr)

Tanah Lot Temple in Bali

With the sun setting over the Indian Ocean’s horizon and the tips of tiered shrines peeking through lush canopies, Tanah Lot Temple draws in the crowds as one of the island’s most sacred sea temples. But it’s also one of the most picturesque places for sunset hour!

Perched IN the ocean some meters offshore, to reach the spiritual site, catch a boat over during Tanah Lot Temple tours, or you can walk across the water pathway when the tides are low.

You can officially say you’ve “walked on water.”

(Around the corner is one more exquisite sea temple, Batu Bolong, and is a five-minute drive from Tanah Lot.)

For couples and honeymooners; another dreamy sunset activity is horse riding along the beachfront!

  • Tanah Lot Temple tours

Travel tip: Compare the best Tanah Lot Temple tours here.

Dinner time at an upmarket restaurant in Canggu or Seminyak (2hrs)

Uma Garden in Bali

Opt to stay in Canggu for your dinner plans or make your way back to Seminyak. Let’s start in Canggu.

Luma is a date night no-brainer, situated on Batu Bolong. Everything from the architecture to the menu draws inspiration from sunny coastal countries in Southern Europe — think Mediterranean vibes — down to the last archway detail!

Then, over to Seminyak. Smothered in greens and dripping chandeliers, Uma Garden is a go-to pick and is all about cooking with fire!

Unwind with drinks or optional night out partying

La Favela in Bali

Tomorrow brings relaxation in the highlands, so tonight could be an ideal time to show off your dance moves!

Arrive for the cocktail tastings (!!!) at La Favela and stay for the late-night party where international residents spin the decks into the night. Move to the rhythm under its dazzling disco ball, there are premium shishas available and sometimes even live music.

Claiming the title of Bali’s ‘best live music venue of the year, The Orchard Bali is open until midnight. From rock to the blues to soul to jazz, squizz their weekly lineup to see who’s playing and if the genre suits your music tastes.

Day 3: Ubud

Ubud in Bali, Indonesia

Welcome to the jungle, baby!

After a fair share of coastal blessings, it’s time to switch things up a bit and journey into Bali’s lush highlands.

This is the other side of Bali you’ve imagined … Cue the rolling rice terraces, jungle escapes, spiritual temples, meditative yoga retreats and cafes with the most insane vistas! There’s loads to do and see in Ubud , so you’ll want to get an early start.

Many travelers visiting Bali for the first time often can’t decide whether to stay in Seminyak/Canggu or Ubud. Day trip here or if you’re the type that prefers to stay at multiple locations during a vacation, opt to spend a night in magical Ubud (famous for its private infinity pool jungle bungalows).

Breakfast in Ubud in a bohemian dream (1hr)

Mudra Cafe in Bali

Where food is flower-power artistry, displaying all colors of the rainbow in one smoothie bowl, breakfast in Ubud has got to be at the iconic Mudra Cafe .

And while smoothie bowls may originate from Brazil, it was Bali that popularized them on the Gram. This cafe was the first to bring the bowls to Ubud-side, and have been wooing patrons ever since — not only with the food.

Tables and chairs are set beneath an open-plan natural bamboo roof, with all the greens surrounding the balcony space.

Live music often sets the tone, playing healing sound bowls and handpans.

The menu promotes ayurvedic living, with dragon bowls, matcha pancake stacks, reimagined gluten-free cassava wraps, banana leaf curry, poke bowls and more.

Tick Tegallalang Rice Terraces off your bucket list (1hr)

Tegallalang Rice Terraces in Bali

Along with countries like Vietnam, the rice paddies in Indo are some of the most famous across the globe! Found in just about every destination in the country, the Tegallalang Rice Terraces are a symbol of Ubud.

Employing this ancient irrigation system for centuries, rows of rice grass strands filter downhill in a laid-out terrace formation, creating captivating natural patterns.

Coconut palms dance in between the scenery, and here, there is a road above the terraces, and a few houses, restaurants and stays are built between the two, so they literally overlook Tegallalang!

Admire locals going about their daily business, and ladies sell woven hats and coconut water as you walk around.

Check into Tis Cafe overlooking the terraces (45mins)

Tis Cafe in Bali

Just above the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tis Cafe owns the best vistas of Tegallalang Rice Terraces.

Before discovering the rest of Ubud’s magic, a caffeine fix is a good idea (or if not, perhaps a fresh juice or tea), but mainly, the reason for stopping over here is to drink in the insane views (and snap, like a hundred photos).

On that note, the artistic bamboo cafe has set up photo ops for its eager guests, providing iconic Bali jungle swings and bird nests to pose among! Not only that, but there is an infinity pool to swim in, too. Stop it right now!

P.S. For our coffee connoisseurs who are after a specialty/artisanal roaster, head to Seniman Coffee Studio instead.

Explore the unique Ubud Monkey Forest (45mins)

Monkey Forest Ubud, Bali

Home to adorable long-tailed Balinese macaques, the Ubud Monkey Forest is one of the most popular things to do in Ubud !

Doubling as a nature reserve and a temple complex, the sacred space is home to three Hindu temples and a mystifying landscape, traversing through dense forest pathways to its shrines, statues and the Durgama Cave.

Situated in Padangtegal Village, witness cultural performances at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary . For example, there’s the traditional Balinese Lubdaka dance, Frog Dance (Tari Katak) and a Ngaben procession (a Balinese Hindu cremation ceremony).

Lunch next to a … waterfall @ Layana Warung (1.5hrs)

Layana Warung in Bali

How many times in your life can you say you’ve dined on the side of a … waterfall?!

Not only is Layana Warung one of the least challenging cascades to reach in Ubud, but there’s a local restaurant here that goes by the same name.

Situated just above the waterfall, enjoy lunch with a view unlike any other!

The menu is a fusion of Indonesian and Western flavors: pizzas, Caesar salads, satay sticks, ayam bumbu rujak (a crispy chicken Javanese dish), curries, cakes, and even coffee topped with artworks of Ganesha!

Sit on the upstairs balcony, or there is a special section set up right near the bottom of the fall (popular for weddings). Park at the restaurant and walk down to the waterfall — easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Partake in an authentic Cooking Class or Yoga Lesson (2-3hrs)

cooking and yoga class in Bali

With its abundance of nature, Ubud is one of the best places to try out a cooking class, in our humble opinion, with much of the island’s fresh produce hailing from its lush highlands and the plantations scattered around this region.

In the most authentic setting, visit a local market to shop for ingredients, then head to Laplapan village where the cooking action takes place.

There are classes under the guidance of qualified Balinese chefs, those at an organic farm, or even private lessons at a local family’s home.

Cooking ain’t your thing? Swap cooking classes for yoga lessons — Ubud is a renowned yogi mecca — or try a meditation session.

Be like Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love at the Ubud Art Market or rejuvenate at a jungle spa (2hrs)

spas in Bali, Indonesia

Woven placemats, rattan bags, pretty dream catchers, hanging macrame planters, bamboo wind chimes, embroidered cases, hippy-dippy elephant pants and bohemian clothing … a shopping heaven awaits you at the Ubud Art Market!

Makeshift stalls brim with handicrafts, souvenirs, jewels and clothes; some vendors sell fresh goods right off the streets — typical of any Southeast Asian market fare.

Most of the goodies you find at Pasar Seni Ubud (its Indonesian name) are crafted by local artisans from the villages around Ubud.

If you’re not the biggest shopper, swap the market for a spoil at one of the spas in Ubud, such as Mansion Wellness , The Sanctoo Spa, Mango Tree Spa by L’OCCITANE or Ubud Bodyworks Center .

Enjoy an early dinner at a jungle restaurant with views (2hrs)

CasCades Restaurant in Bali

Tomorrow brings an early start, so ensure you’re as fresh as a daisy for Day 4’s antics with an early dinner at one of Ubud’s incredible restaurants with a view.

So many tropical palm trees e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e. … Welcome to dreamy CasCades Restaurant , commanding endless vistas of the exotic valley in front. Their Balinese Rijsttafel tasting menu is a truly special experience, but even the a la carte plates burst with color and creativeness.

Any couples or honeymooners in the house? It doesn’t get more romantic than Swept Away Restaurant , with multiple whimsical seating options, from tables on the riverbank to private terraces (and they can also help organize a romantic proposal dinner).

Feast on elevated local cuisine at Kepitu Restaurant at The Kayon Resort. Its seating arrangements are out of this world, beneath the watchful gaze of a giant statue or with a waterfall cascade right in front of you.

Day 4: Mount Batur & Ubud temples

Mount Batur & Ubud temples in Bali, Indonesia

You’ve explored the beaches, the flourishing highlands and now, it’s time for a new change of scenery: a Bali volcano! Imagine volcanic terrains, natural springs, ashed-out calderas and unbeatable panoramas as low-hanging clouds create misty backdrops.

Of all the unique things to do in Bali, a sunrise hike up the island’s second-highest mountain is unparalleled.

About an hour from Ubud, wake-up calls are around 2 AM, then it takes roughly two hours to reach the summit. Skip the sunrise if that’s too early, venturing to Mount Batur when daylight breaks, or if you love your beauty sleep, venture here mid-morning and skip the other activities.

En route back to the coast, pit-stop over in Ubud again, exploring the rest of the not-to-miss sites.

1,717 meters above sea level, go on a Mount Batur sunrise trek (5hrs)

Mount Batur in Bali

Bali’s second tallest mountain is just waiting to be explored, and not just that, Mount Batur is actually a dormant volcano, last erupting in 2000.

It’s one of the most chosen hiking expeditions to embark on on the island, but its unique sunrise treks are the real winner!

You’re treated to the most sublime views over the island — not to mention the sun rising above it all and through the clouds is a jaw-dropping moment if ever we did see one!

(Sunrise is typically between 5.30 and 6.30 AM, depending on the season, so this activity does require a super early rise, but once up top, it’s all totally worth it.)

There are Mount Batur sunrise tours with breakfast included, enjoyed once you reach the peak. If you’re not the biggest hiking fan, opt for a sunrise jeep tour option instead.

Have a coffee refuel with volcano views (30mins)

El Lago in Bali

Now that you’ve conquered Mount Batur, it’s time for a caffeine kick!

En route back to Ubud, stop over at a cafe with subliminal views of the dormant volcano — sitting in front, give yourselves a pat on the back knowing you climbed to the very top!

Both Japanese-inspired El Lago and nature-driven Okuta are between Mount Batur and Ubud in the Kintamani area, featuring outdoor seating and plenty of photo ops!

Head back to Ubud side via Tirta Empul and to Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) (1.5hrs)

Goa Gajah Temple, Bali

Have you heard about Bali’s holy water temples before? Popular with locals for purification rituals (which you can do too), Tirta Empul is a busy spiritual complex where masses arrive daily to experience the special cleansing procession.

Founded in 926 CE, the ancient complex is also referred to as the Holy Water Temple, and around the grounds, you’ll notice water spurts with queues of bathers standing in front.

These are fed by the temple’s natural spring, and locals believe the waters purify your mind, body and soul.

Stop over at Tirta Empul on the way to Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave); an 11th-century wonder with etched-out demon figurines guarding the entrance to the temple cave (that’s right, the sanctuary is found within the cavern).

Lunch in Ubud in surreal settings (1.5hrs)

The Sayan House in Bali

After such an active morning, we bet you’ve worked up an appetite. Take advantage of Ubud’s restaurant scene one last time.

Talk about insane views! Enjoy contemporary Asian plates from Indus as low-hanging clouds float on by. How delish does whipped edamame with wonton chips sound as a snack???

Olala, Wild Air is a jungle fantasy that does amazing food and cocktails to match. The best part? Cool off after your morning trek with a dip in its pool overseeing the canopies below.

Self-acclaimed as the ‘best restaurant in Ubud,’ The Sayan House serves up Japanese Latin fusion — uh, yum!!

Add in a last round of sightseeing at the Ubud Palace & Ubud Water Palace (1.5hrs)

Puri Saren Agung, Ubud Palace, Bali

Back to the sightseeing in Ubud, tick off two more important attractions before journeying back down to the coast.

The former residence of the Ubud royal family was constructed during the 19th century, and today, the Ubud Palace is a treat for architectural and art fundis, centering on the traditional kind in this case.

Among the things to do and explore here, watch a generational-old Balinese dance performance.

The Ubud Water Palace is a one-minute walk around the corner, so it makes sense to visit both now.

Officially Pura Taman Saraswati Temple, it’s a classic example of these types of sanctuaries in Bali, typically surrounded by water.

Cross over a lotus pond to the main temple, and when the flowers are in bloom, the lily pads and sacred fleurs make for the most awe-inspiring photographs with the intricately detailed ornate temple entrance in the background!

Dine at a stylish restaurant (2hrs)

Mama San Bali

Back on Bali’s beachside, it’s dinner time in the Kuta surroundings between Canggu and Seminyak.

Travel to the Middle East at Sababa and feel instantly transported, and with a menu that matches the Pinterest-perfect interiors!

For fine dining with insane oceanic views, there’s no better spot than Skool Kitchen . The kitchen incorporates open-flame cooking, and you’ll have a hard time choosing between its small plates and mouth-watering mains.

Sophisticated elegance defines Mama San Bali , with an ever-evolving menu bursting with creativity. They also do an epic Supper Club!

Day 5: South Bali (Uluwatu & Jimbaran)

South Bali (Uluwatu & Jimbaran), Indonesia

While you had a taster of Bali beach life on days 1 and 2, Day 5 is fully dedicated to salty adventures!

After two days in the uplands, you’re back on the coastline. Uncover Bali’s south side, where surf culture reigns supreme.

Uluwatu is an internationally acclaimed surfing mecca. From atop its wave of cliffside beach clubs and restaurants, admire the pros catching barrels below. Further on is Jimbaran (half an hour from Uluwatu), and with less swell, it’s perfect for newbies!

After a few busy days, today is about taking things easy with some fun in the sun — because when the sun’s out … we’ll let you complete the rest.

Brekkie in Uluwatu (1hr)

Nourish in Bali

The breakfast scene matches Uluwatu’s laid-back culture, with a mix of trendy eateries, vegan options or local warungs.

Warm and inviting, Tarabelle has smoked salmon bagels, granola bowls, truffle omelets, french toast and all your regular morning favorites. (Don’t leave without ordering a donut-to-go.)

Clean and whole Nourish delivers falafel wraps, waffles, bagels, eggs bennie, poke bowls and great coffee!

Get ready for a beach-hopping morning (4hrs)

Melasti Beach in Bali

Honestly, if you didn’t have at least one day for beach hopping, you’d regret it! Today, uncover the rare beauty of Bali’s south coast locations, spending the first half of your day on the shores.

The south is renowned as surfer’s paradise, but other than just options for epic breaks and fun lefties, there are plenty of picks for sandy hangs and ocean swims scattered between Uluwatu and Jimbaran.

For beaches that have it all (soft sands, waves, restaurants, beach clubs and other amenities), you’ve got Melasti Beach, Pandawa Beach and Bingin Beach.

Nyang Nyang Beach (Nunggalan Beach) and Thomas Beach are both secluded options away from the masses.

Learn to surf at Balangan Beach, or if you’re a frequent rider, catch barrels at Uluwatu Beach (Suluban Beach), Green Bowl Beach and Impossibles.

Wine and dine at an epic beach club (2hrs)

One Eighty in Bali

Dramatic cliffs around every turn, and rugged landscapes adding mystique; lunch is served!

Lazing on sun beds poolside and overseeing Uluwatu Beach below, the iconic Cliff Restaurant (at Ulu Cliffhouse) wins hearts with its vibes, views and direct beach access. Order a bunch of small or large sharing plates.

Chill out in the glass-bottom infinity pool on the edge of a cliff while waiting for your food and drinks to arrive at One Eighty (a social media favorite).

It’s the one and only Rock Bar !!! One of the most famous beach clubs in Bali, choose between multiple seating areas set up between the, well, rocks!

Pull up a blue beanbag or reserve a private cabana at Sundays Beach Club . Australian Chef James Viles leads the team, and you can expect a seafood-heavy menu.

Head to Uluwatu Temple for sunset and a Kecak dance show (1.5hrs)

Uluwatu temple, Bali

Sun chasers, stop everything you’re doing and get to Uluwatu Temple in time for Golden Hour!

Apart from beach club locations, it’s the best place to catch the sunset as golden streaks silhouette the temple’s features, molten magic illuminates the ocean and the sky transforms into a pink dream!

Boasting an astonishing cliffside location, the 11th-century temple was built 70 meters above the sea, and is one of Bali’s six spiritual pillars.

During sunset, witness a traditional fire Kecak dance show at Pura Luhur Uluwatu (its official Indonesian name) between 6 and 7 PM.

Feast on the freshest prawns, catch of the day, oysters, crab, mussels, lobster and calamari. (Most of the seafood comes from the daily Jimbaran Fish Market.)

Tables are decorated with candles, and some restaurants offer a seafood BBQ option.

Pandan Sari Jimbaran, Lia Cafe , Jimbaran Bay Seafood and Menega Cafe are fantastic options for a seafood dinner on the beach in Jimbaran.

Day 6: Penida Islands (Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan)

Penida Islands in Indonesia

Fun fact: The Island of the Gods is one of 18,000-odd Indonesian islands, and technically, the three Nusa Islands (Lembongan, Penida and Ceningan) are considered part of Bali. Situated off the mainland, day trips and boat tours to the Nusa Islands are super popular.

Catch a 45-minute ferry from Sanur Harbor to Nusa Lembongan, arriving at Jungut Batu Beach. Or, journey to the islands with private boat tours .

Experience a bit of each of the three sister islands, snorkeling, boating, sunbathing, exploring and eating your way through this lesser-touched tropical oasis.

The last public ferry departs from Lembongan at 4 PM, or alternatively, spend your last night on the Nusa Islands.

(We had a late flight out of Bali and chose to stay overnight on Nusa Lembongan. With the ferry arriving back in Bali close to the airport, we weren’t stressed for time at all — but plan your seven-day Bali itinerary carefully if you’re keen to do the same.)

Before cruising over to the Nusa Islands by speedboat or joining your boat tour , guzzle down a quick brekkie.

In Seminyak, order the ricotta pancake stack from Shelter Cafe (boasting natural interiors and bistro-vibes), or a matcha chai and an oversized smoothie bowl from Cafe Organic .

In Canggu, Koloni is calling with its California-inspired menu, or iam Vegan Babe puts a plant-based spin on staples like a classic eggs bennie.

Arrive by boat to Nusa Lembongan and go snorkeling (3hrs)

snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan, Bali

Majority of the daily commutes arrive on Nusa Lembongan (the most tourist-driven of the three Nusa Islands).

After disembarking from the boat, hail down a local tuk-tuk taxi, drive into the main part of town closest to the drop-off bay, and hunt down a tour operator offering snorkeling expeditions.

(You can pre-organize a snorkel session on Nusa Lembongan beforehand when you’re on mainland Bali with your stay or a recommended operator, or pre-book a snorkel tour online before arriving in Bali.)

You can snorkel just about any coastline, but for the best snorkeling in Bali, the Nusa Islands are where it’s at. Popular spots around this sister island include Lembongan Bay, Blue Corner and Mangrove Point.

Avid scuba divers, switch snorkeling for diving , swimming with manta rays at Manta Point.

Order a quick coffee and then cruise across to Nusa Penida (30mins)

Nusa Penida in Indonesia

Swap seasalt for coffee before catching a quick 10-minute boat ride over to mysterious Nusa Penida.

(The Little Coconut and Bali Eco Deli are two lovely options for a coffee or freshly squeezed juice.)

To reach Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan, make your way to the iconic Yellow Bridge. Catch a tuk-tuk over to the bridge or walk here.

At the bridge are local boatmen who take you between the two islands, dropping you off at Toyapakeh Harbour in Nusa Penida. It’s really easy and convenient, and once the eight-seater is full, off you go!

To get back to Nusa Lembongan, it’s the same route and departure points.

Travel tip: Once you’re on Penida, if you feel comfortable enough, rent a scooter to get around.

Pose in front of the T-Rex viewpoint at the world’s most famous Insta beach, Kelingking Beach (30mins)

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida, Indonesia

You mean to say there’s a dinosaur on Nusa Penida? Well, not exactly, but the famous Kelingking Beach has garnered the nickname because of its T-Rex-shaped cliffside viewpoint.

Blowing up on Instagram circa 2015, it’s one of the most Instagrammed beaches in the entire universe! From a bird’s eye perspective, the shape of the crag looks eerily similar to the upper half of the Tyrannosaurus dino.

Pose for that legendary shot from the rocks 200 meters above the cliff, then take the wooden broadstairs down to the beach bay below — beware, it’s a steep descent, buttttt, there are loads more angles to snap photos for the ‘gram as you do so.

FYI. If you do plan on hiking down to the beach, it’s not the quickest or safest, clocking in two hours. Please take extra caution, there have been some scary incidents.

Step inside a fantasy realm at Tembeling Beach and Forest (1.5hrs)

Tembeling Beach and Forest in Nusa Penida, Indonesia

Who’s up for an adventure? Pretend to be fairies and mermaids at the magical Tembeling Beach and Forest.

One part ocean, one part natural forest pool behind it, this wild and untouched gem is located roughly three kilometers to the south of Kelingking Beach.

To get to the secret beachscape, journey through native coastal forests, and a staircase brings you to the final wonder. Before you touch the sand, there’s a spring directly behind the shoreline, doubling as the most extraordinary natural pool.

While it may be like a scene from a fairytale, it’s not the easiest place to reach. You will need to get a local to drive you down on motorbike, or if you’ve rented your own moped, navigate the downhills yourselves carefully (only for experienced riders).

Boat back to Lembongan, cross the Yellow Bridge and have lunch on the ocean on Nusa Ceningan (1.5hrs)

Nusa Ceningan in Indonesia

Navigate your way back to the harbor, and catch the 10-minute boat ride back to Lembongan, disembarking at the Yellow Bridge on Lembongan-side. From here, cross the famous yellow steel icon and enjoy lunch on Nusa Ceningan!

Keep your bathing suits close on hand because these two locations boast the best type of swimming pool … the calm crystal ocean!

Decked out in funky murals and decor that makes you feel like you’re in Tulum, Mexico, Seabreeze Ceningan is our personal favorite. Chill out in hammocks or nets extending over the sea, and take the coolest photos on the swings in the ocean right in front of the cafe.

Order a signature monster colada from The Sand Ceningan (just a couple meters down from Seabreeze). Built on a small rockery, there’s deck seating and stairs leading to the ocean, also with sea swings and hammocks right in the water.

The menu is a fusion of Caribbean, Lebanese, Mediterranean, Indonesian, Jamaican, Arabic and Algerian cuisines.

Bellies full? Head back to Bali via speedboat!

Complete your Bali trip with dinner at a lovely local restaurant (2hrs)

Gabah Restaurant in Bali

To end off an unforgettable week on the Island of the Gods, book a table at a really nice Balinese restaurant to savor the flavors of Indonesia one last time before you leave.

We suggest staying in Kuta tonight, as it’s conveniently close to the airport (about 15 minutes), and the boat services arrive from the Nusa Islands at Sanur Port (half an hour from Kuta or the airport).

Gabah Restaurant is as authentic as they come, it’s name a Bahasa Indonesian phrase. The natural interiors take you back in time, and all ingredients are sourced from the local markets. Choose between five menus: the Signature, Archipelago, Balinese Delight, Indian Delights and Vegetarian.

For quintessential Indonesian foods, like nasi goreng, chicken satay and curries, dine at traditional Shinta Warung (established in 1995).

With its fusion of Indonesian seafood and Chinese menu, Wanaku continues to impress patrons — and just wait until you get a load of the setting! Sashimi lobster, anyone?

Day 7: Cultural Park & fly home

Cultural Park in Bali, Indonesia

Can you believe it’s all ending so fast?

Check-out of your stay and enjoy one last brekkie in Kuta (approximately 10 minutes from Denpasar Airport and 20 minutes from Seminyak), and if time affords it, add an extra cultural activity in the area to your Bali itinerary before flying home or to your next destination.

Revel in one last breakfast in Kuta (1hr)

Crumb & Coaster in Bali

For the best breakfast (and coffee) in Kuta, Crumb & Coaster kickstarts your day the right way!

Straight off the bat, we recommend the signature (massive) sweetcorn fritter stack or the go-to house omelet.

Other yummies are benedict croissants, smashed avo toast variations, banana pancakes and a classic full English.

From the outside, it could be mistaken for a trendy boutique, and speaking of, there is a recently added shop selling homeware and clothing.

Opening early morning, it’s ideal for travelers with an early start.

Watch a traditional show at Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park (2hrs)

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, Bali

If time isn’t of the essence and you’re blessed with extra hours for a last round of sightseeing, ensure your final endeavor is a cultural one over at Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park . It’s the perfect send-off!

Missed the chance to watch a traditional kecak dance performance? Not to fear because you have one last opportunity at the park, with daily cultural performances running between 11 AM and 6 PM.

Witness the famed dance, listen to native Balinese music and get involved in the other daily culture-centric activities.

Home to the tallest monument in Bali, the park’s 121-meter-tall Garuda Wisnu Kencana copper-brass statue is an iconic Indonesian landmark.

Hire a segway and explore the 60-hectare grounds this way and its other larger-than-life monuments, or climb the statue during a ‘Top of Statue Tour.’  There is also the on-site Jendela Bali Restaurant.

Where to stay in Bali for first-timers?

Surrounded by bougainvilleas and other lush blooms, the wooden bungalows at Uluwatu Breeze Village are super cute, with an awesome location close to restaurants and bars.

For the most jaw-dropping location (and views), book a night at wanderlusting Dreamsea Bali . Or there’s the adults-only Gravity Eco Boutique Hotel which regularly features on the ‘Gram.

For the 5-star celebrity treatment, spoil yourselves at the luxurious Bulgari Resort Bali (with its own private beach). Built on a cliff over the Indian Ocean, the 5-star Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort is slightly more affordable.

Take the road less traveled: Nusa Lembongan

With the ocean as your garden, choose to stay on the beach at Nusa Veranda Sunset Villas , equipped with an infinity pool and a lovely restaurant.

Oozing archetypal Balinese decor, guests love the design (and location) of Castaway in Mushroom Bay. Traveling with a bunch of mates? Ohana’s Beachfront Resort is a total vibe!

Feel like Tarzan and Jane at Morin Resort , nestled among the treetops with Tamarind Beach below. The Acala Shri Sedana is heaven for couples; The Tamarind Resort is for holiday-makers who love a hotel with all fancy amenities; and Hai Tide Beach Resort has bungalows right on the sands.

How to get around Bali?

how to get around Bali

Bali is huge, covering 5,780 km2. Here are your options on how to move around the island.

Private transfers: Consider pre-booking airport transfers in Bali for the moment you land, conveniently traveling from the airport to your accommodation or first destination in comfort with a private driver.

Car rentals: Renting a car for the duration of your stay is a super convenient way to get around the island (and is also a cost-saver). Hire your vehicle and drive yourselves (if you have an international driver’s license), or book a car rental with a private driver instead.

Local taxis: There are local taxi services all over Bali, and Bluebird Taxis are most reliable. Or, hop onto a taxi service app, like Grab or Maxim and order your trips online.

Local motorbike taxis: Motorbike taxis are also very popular (and more cost-effective), and operate via online apps, such as Gojek and Grab . Or, if you’re experienced, rent your own moped for the duration of your stay.

Local buses: For a budget-friendly option, hop onto a local bus to get from A to B.

The 3 Day Ubud Itinerary That Will Make You Fall in Love with Bali

Wondering what to do with 3 days in Ubud, Bali?

Tucked amongst lush green rice paddies, dense rainforest, and carved into steep ravines, Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali. Despite being on everyone’s Southeast Asian bucket list, Ubud is still a great hub to experience the authentic Balinese way of life compared to the beach resorts along the south.

As one of the island’s most popular destinations and my personal favorite, Ubud covers a wide range of cultural sights, nature adventures, wellness activities, and very chic shopping and dining spots. But today, we’re going to  focus on its art and cultural experiences.

After completely falling in love with this island on my first visit, I knew I had to come back. During my two months in Bali, I drove for weeks around Ubud, hiking volcanoes, eating Babi Guling (spit roast pig), and even attending a traditional ceremony. Plus, score, it’s a paradise for acro yogis.

But if it’s your first time here, planning a 3 day itinerary for Ubud can be overwhelming with the many options available. To help you make the most of your time,  I’ve put together this suggested 3 day Ubud itinerary covering the top cultural sights thrown in with the best adventure activities.

Day 1: Explore Ubud’s Art & Culture

Morning: traditional ubud art market.

Start your first morning in Ubud by wandering through  the traditional art market , where you’ll find stalls filled with locally made handicrafts and souvenirs.

Browse rows of woven baskets, batik fabric, wooden masks, and other unique items made by local artisans. It’s one of the best places to pick up some souvenirs and try your hand at bargaining.

Top Tip:  Have small bills on hand for paying vendors, and don’t be shy to negotiate for fair prices. The first price is never the right price.

Afterward, stop for a delicious and  affordable local warung lunch at Labak Sari Restaurant,  just across from the market. This cozy restaurant serves up Indonesian classics like nasi goreng, mie goreng noodles, satay skewers, and gado gado salads.

Afternoon: Visit Ubud’s Museums

Next, spend an hour or two at the  Museum Puri Lukisan ,  which showcases a vast collection of Balinese and Indonesian paintings and artwork. Wander through the four buildings housing permanent and special exhibits to learn about local art history and styles.

Later in the afternoon, check out the  Antonio Blanco Museum .  It used to be the former home of the renowned Spanish artist. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by large exotic birds before viewing a collection of over 300 of Blanco’s paintings and illustrations.

Evening: Watch a Traditional Dance Show

End your first day with an  evening Legong dance performance at the Ubud Palace.  One of the  most memorable things you can do in Ubud , these classical dances bring Hindu legends to life through music, costumes, and movement. Guests of all ages can appreciate this enduring traditional art form.

Finish up with  dinner at Three Monkeys Cafe  near the palace. Their wood-fired pizzas, pasta, and cocktails appeal to foodies craving international fare at reasonable prices.

Day 2: Volcano Trekking and More Cultural Activities

Morning: sunrise trek at mount batur.

Make the most of day two by waking up in the wee hours of the morning to head out on an active adventure to Mount Batur Volcano! Then, if you’re not completely dead, continue next to a chiller activity with a cooking class and a stroll through the rice terraces.

Kintamani is one of the harder-to-reach places on the island, but also one of the most spectacular and one of my favorite places. So even if you’re on a short week Bali itinerary , try to make it here!

Start your early morning on a thrilling  sunrise trek up Mount Batur  to experience a glowing sky over Bali. If you’re staying in the city center, your transport will pick you up at about 2 – 2:30am!

Warning! Even though you aren’t technically required to have a guide, I’ve heard horror stories of locals harassing tourists (even violently) without one. So it’s best to book a guided tour of Mount Batur to be on the safe side. You’ll be provided with basic trekking equipment, a breakfast at the summit, and many include the nearby hot springs ( like this tour )

Hike along the crater rim in the pre-dawn hours to reach the summit just as golden sunbeams spread across the island each morning. Although challenging, this climb only takes 2 hours, so if you’re a decent hiker, you’ll make it with no problem.

Return downhill for a soothing  soak in the volcano’s hot springs.  Many tours include this in their package, which is honestly a highlight after a tough hike.

After a relaxing soak, stop for a healthy lunch at a r estaurant with a view like The Silent Retreat.  Refuel with organic vegetarian fare and locally sourced iced tea as you enjoy serene valley views.

Afternoon: Cooking class and Rice Terraces

Learn traditional indonesian recipes.

In the afternoon, get a hands-on learning experience with a  Balinese cooking class  at a local home. During this 3-hour course, you’ll visit a local market, receive recipes from your host, and then prepare classic Balinese dishes yourself. Connect with locals, learn new skills, and have a blast!

Walk on the Steep Steps of Tegalalang Rice Terrace

After having your fill (which you will), walk off the calories at  Tegalalang Rice Terraces,  one of Bali’s bucket list attractions . For a small entrance fee donation, you can explore the terraced landscape and take some seriously Insta-worthy photos. It’s also great spot if you’ve got a drone.

While here, you may even want to ride on the Instagrammable’ Bali Swing’. Although, for Indonesia, this does come at a relatively high attraction price.

Even though you’re probably still going to be full, stop for an  afternoon coffee at one of the cafes along the main road  for great views of the stepped layers.

Related Post: Here’s a full guide on how to see the Tegalalang Rice Terraces.

Evening: Watch a Traditional Balinese Fire Dance Show

Afterward, join a guided walk on  Campuhan Ridge Walk  for sweeping valley views at sunset. The 9km trail stretches through the jungle above the rushing Campuhan River. Your local guide will point out traditional villages and temple sites along the way.

End your day with a  luxe dinner at Locavore,  where the tasting menu changes every months. Ubud is famous for these new-age restaurants, and this is a perfect place to splurge for a memorable farm-to-table meal. It was named one of Asia’s 50 best restaurants for 5 years in a row!

Update! Locavore is renovating into Locavore NXT. Make a reservation early here!

Cap off your day with another unique Balinese cultural show. Shows like a  Kecak Fire & Trance Dance  act out ancient myths through chanting, music, and costumes. The outdoor performances held at various temples and venues usually include transport from Ubud, but you can always bike or Grab there yourself.

When staying in Ubud, homestays are your best bet; however, if you’re looking for something truly unique, consider Sandat glamping tents – one of the best  luxury glamping sites in Bali .

Day 3: Discover Sacred Sites & Healing Arts

Morning: tirta empul temple.

On your last day, explore Ubud’s sacred temples and purify yourself by bathing in its holy waters.

In the morning, undertake a motorbike trip or tour from Ubud to the revered  Tirta Empul Temple.  Dating back over 1,000 years, the temple’s holy spring is where Balinese Hindus purify themselves with ritual cleansing.

Not only can you admire the ornately carved statues around the bathing pools and feed the masses of koi fish on the temple grounds, but you can even take a dip in the pools yourself.

Change into the green silk garb before heading into the waters. Once it’s your turn, the ritual is this:

  • Place your hands together on your forehead and say “ohm” 3 times
  • Cup water to your head and face. Repeat 3 times
  • Sip the water and spit 3 times (although I didn’t do this part)
  • Then place your head under the spout

Afternoon: Plenglipuran Village and Bamboo Forest

Head to the  traditional village of Penglipuran  in the afternoon and be amazed by the perfectly aligned bamboo homes constructed according to Balinese architectural principles.

Engage in conversations with welcoming locals and discover their local culture, handed down through generations. This is the real, authentic Bali way of life.

Afterward, take a stroll through the nearby  Bamboo Forest  in Kubu Village. This hidden gem is an enchanting sight, with towering bamboo stalks forming a canopy over you as you walk along the path.

Next, hop on your bike through the  bamboo forests just outside of Ubud.  Ride downhill, shaded by soaring bamboo stalks, before  arriving at the ABIManyu Studio,  an artisan workshop crafting beautiful bamboo artwork. Tour the studio and learn traditional techniques.

Evening: Yoga and Spa sessions

Get a balinese massage.

In the evening, choose to  relax and get a Balinese full-body massage or join a yoga class . Ubud is considered the wellness capital of Bali, offering everything from cheap massages to meditation. They also have a very active acro yoga scene.

I’d suggest a treatment at a spa like  Tjampuhan Spa . Their signature massage uses local ingredients that combine coconut, spices, and Balinese palming techniques.

Take a (Acro)Yoga Class

Alternatively, take a yoga class overlooking the rice terraces at  The Yoga Barn.  Their varied schedule has options for all levels to improve strength and flexibility. Classes end just before sunset.

While at the Yoga Barn, treat yourself to one of their mouthwatering and nutritious vegan smoothies or Buddha bowls. But you should really save your stomach space for my next suggestion.

Step in the Revolving Doors of Clear Cafe

End your last evening in Ubud with a  healthy dinner at Clear Cafe . This is honestly one of the coolest cafes/restaurants I have ever been to. You walk in through a revolving stone door to the most aesthetically pleasing atmosphere that any feng shui master would be proud of.

Their menu offers organic, vegetarian, and raw dishes packed with local flavors. Plus, I had two meals and two drinks for just $15!

What to Do in Ubud with More Time

While 3 days in Ubud is a good introduction to the town’s top tourist attractions, there are still so many things you can do here. I’ve spent weeks in Ubud, and there are still so many waterfalls and rice terraces that I have yet to visit.

Consider extending your stay to enjoy these additional phenomenal experiences. Alternatively, you can customize the suggested itinerary by swapping out some activities with the following recommendations to better suit your preferences and interests.

Pura Lempuyang Temple (Gate of Heaven)

Make a day trip to the north coast’s Pura Lempuyang Temple , one of Indonesia’s most iconic temples . Atop a mountain ridge, its highlight is the towering Gate of Heaven, framing Mount Agung volcano in the distance.

This spectacular gateway makes for legendary photos. The temple also features serene gardens, ponds, and vistas. While there, you can also check out another Agung viewpoint called Lahangan Sweet or the best temple in all of Bali – Besakih Temple.

Lempuyang Temple is pretty far, and you want to get very early. Join this North Bali Instagram Tour to make sure you get this shot below, without waiting for 2 hours.

Go Waterfall Chasing

Bali is known for its stunning waterfalls, and Ubud has a lot worth visiting. Some of the best waterfalls include the very developed Tegenungan Waterfall or more secluded ones like Kanto Lampo, Tibumana, or Tukad Cepung Waterfall.

There are also plenty of tours that take you to multiple waterfalls in one day, so you can see as many as possible.

If you are really into waterfalls, sign up for this tour that will take you to 3 of the best waterfalls around Ubud!

Jungle Cycling Tours

Tackle an off-road cycling tour through villages and jungles north of Ubud, riding through green valleys, rice paddies, and small communities rarely seen by tourists.

Stop for lunch at local restaurants along the way. Join this two-wheeled excursion that appeals to active, adventurous types seeking authentic encounters with real Bali life.

Whitewater River Rafting

Experience the thrill of whitewater rafting along the Ayung River for an adrenaline rush. Led by experienced guides, paddle and splash through exhilarating rapids surrounded by thick jungle. Between rapids, relax and absorb serene valley scenery.

If you have a complete other day and are looking for adventure, combine two activities in one on this ATV and White Water Rafting Tour.

Play with the Monkeys in the Monkey Forest

Visit the  Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary  in central Ubud with over 600 cheeky monkeys. Walk the trails while observing the mischievous primates. You can even tip the park workers for snacks to feed them – just be careful, as they can get quite grabby!

Most people know of the Ubud Monkey Forest, but not many tourists realize there are a few different monkey forests in Ubud.

For a more secluded monkey forest that isn’t packed with tourists, go see the  monkeys and sacred temples at Sangeh Monkey Forest.  This rainforest is home to two troops of gray long-tailed macaques, and they are less aggressive than the ones at Ubud.

Visit the Elephant Cave (Goa Gajah)

Goa Gajah, also known as the Elephant Cave, is a mystical archaeological site located on the outskirts of Ubud. This 9th-century sanctuary has elaborate rock carvings of various menacing creatures, elephants, and demons at the cave entrance.

Inside the cave, you’ll find a small worship area where locals often come to pray. This is quite close to Tirta Empul if you want to combine attractions.

Where to Stay in Ubud, Bali

While Tegalalang Rice Terrace is not a place where you can stay overnight, Ubud and its surrounding area are overflowing with superb accommodation choices. In all of Southeast Asia, few other destinations offer the same value for the cost that you can find than around Ubud.

TRI-TIERED INFINITY POOL LUXURY RESORT – The Kayon Jungle Resort

Experience the tranquility of Ubud at  Kayon Jungle Resort ! You know you’ve made it when you’re chilling in a three-tiered infinity pool luxury resort overlooking the treetops, just a few kilometers from Tegallalang Rice fields. You’ll best the best amenities that money can buy, with live music, free yoga, and amazing eats.

STYLISH MID-RANGE MODERN IN UBUD – Sabana Ubud

Just out of the heart of Ubud,  book a stay at Sabana Hotel , a highly-rated favorite around town. Along with modern, clean rooms with all the amenities you need, this small boutique hotel has a long outdoor pool and a restaurant for food and drinks. Plus, they have complimentary breakfast and free shuttles to Ubud center.

NICEST HOSTEL OWNERS YOU’LL EVER MEET – Bali Bamboo Jungle Huts & Hostel

I could not sing more praises to the fantastic owners (Boom Boom & Sri) of  Bali Bamboo Jungle Huts & Hostel .  Although you are getting hostel amenities, the vibes this place attracts are amazing. Plus, they are super close to the rice terraces and will help you plan any trip or activity you may want to take.

They even set me up with a class with their wood carving uncle so I could finally cross this activity off my bucket list.

Is 3 Days Enough in Ubud?

For most, 3 days is generally considered enough time to go to the main attractions of Ubud. However, as mentioned earlier, there are still many other activities and destinations in and around Ubud that can be added to your itinerary if you have more time.

I think Ubud is a great hub if you plan on going to more adventurous places in North Bali or East Bali . I even left my luggage at Bamboo Bali , the amazing hostel I was staying in.

How to Get Around

For an adventurous and flexible method, renting a scooter is the most affordable and best way to get around. With prices starting as low as 60,000 IDR ($4 USD), you can easily rent one from local services or directly through your accommodation in Ubud. [ Click here to pre-reserve a scooter and enjoy the added convenience of delivery! ]

But Ubud’s traffic is notoriously terrible, so I get that renting a scooter is not for everyone. Then you can hire a private driver to make a customized itinerary , take a tour from Ubud , or use Indonesia’s Uber (Grab or Gojek).

Update!  Local taxi drivers used to harass people who used these ride-sharing apps around central Ubud. But now, it seems so integrated into society that they’ve made peace with it.

Final thoughts: Things to do in a 3 Day Ubud Itinerary

Ubud is a destination you can visit again and again. I’m even thinking of making it one of my digital nomad hubs. Although this suggested 3 day itinerary covers the highlights, there are always more treasures to uncover in Ubud’s villages, rice fields, jungles, and ancient temples.

But there’s more to see in Bali. If you’re up for it, I highly suggest snorkeling in Amed in the north or island-hopping over to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. Or, if you’re planning a visit to other places, be sure to check out my other posts about Bali below.
