About blackfoot.
Blackfoot is an American Southern rock band from Jacksonville, Florida formed during 1970. Though they primarily play with a Southern rock style, they are also known as a hard rock act. The band's classic lineup consisted of guitarist and vocalist Rickey Medlocke, guitarist Charlie Hargrett, bassist Greg T. Walker, and drummer Jakson Spires. They had a number of successful albums during the 1970s and early 1980s, including Strikes (1979), Tomcattin' (1980) and Marauder (1981).

Lynyrd Skynyrd's Rickey Medlocke talks hometown Fort Myers show, band's legacy and more
ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd rock the stage together Saturday at Hertz Arena . But when they're offstage? They're fans just like everyone in the audience.
On their co-headlining tour, the ZZ Top guys often watch Lynyrd Skynyrd from the side of the stage, says Skynyrd guitarist Rickey Medlocke. And Medlocke and the Skynyrd guys usually check out ZZ Top, too.
That's the great thing about being an older rock 'n' roller, he says. All those long-ago rivalries have long melted away.
Now they're just celebrating the music they love together.
"Bands like this, there's only a handful," says Medlocke, 74, a longtime Fort Myers resident. "And when we can all get together and maybe play together and perform together, hey, I'm all for it man.
"Just to take people on a walk of history. Because that's exactly what it is ― it's rock history standin' in front of you."
Medlocke recently discussed Skynyrd's tour with ZZ Top (nearly sold out at Hertz Arena), his new solo band, what's going on with Blackfoot and more with The News-Press/Naples Daily News. Here's what he had to say about:
Touring with ZZ Top on the Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour
The name of The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour combines two of the bands' biggest hits: ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man" and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man.
The tour launched in July 2023. The Hertz Arena show is part of a new leg that kicks off Friday in Savannah, Georgia.
"Last year was just over the top," Medlocke says. "Both bands – we got along great, the crews got along great together. And we talked about continuing this, even last year. And so here it is."
It's always fun touring with ZZ Top, he says.
"They've been such good friends of ours, especially Billy (Gibbons) and Frank (Beard)," he says. "I've known them for many, many years. And I'm just looking forward to joining up with them again and having a buncha fun."
Playing a hometown show in the Fort Myers area
Lynyrd Skynyrd played Hertz Arena for a 2022 Hurricane Ian fundraiser. They usually don't come back to cities this soon, Medlocke says, but he's glad they are.
"I'm really happy about it," Medlocke says. "Because we went for such a long time of not playing my hometown here."
It doesn't necessarily feel different playing a hometown show, he says. But it definitely means something.
"You know what, every gig is special," he says. "But there's always a specialness about playing your hometown, you know. And really putting on a good show for everybody.
"I don't know, man, we're comin' full force and just really looking forward to it. Get ready, Fort Myers."
Lynyrd Skynyrd's new guitarist, Damon Johnson
New Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Damon Johnson steps into the shoes of the late Gary Rossington, the last surviving original member of Skynyrd. Rossington died in March 2023.
"Those are big shoes to fill, but Damon Johnson has done an incredible job," Medlocke says. "I give kudos to Damon.
"He's a great guitar player, has played with some great bands in his life ― Alice Cooper and Thin Lizzy, to name a few. And you know what, he has just come in and has done an incredible job."
The return of the Rickey Medlocke Band
Medlocke recently brought back his solo band, the Rickey Medlocke Band. This version has all-new members (but no Southwest Florida musicians).
"When Skynyrd's off the road and taking time off, I am just full of energy," Medlocke explains. "And I get bored really easy. I can only do so much fishing and so much boating, you know.
"So I wanted to write more. I wanted to play some."
Still, Medlocke says it's only a side project, and his first priority will always be Lynyrd Skynyrd.
"I promised Gary Rossington many, many years ago that ... I will be in Skynyrd until the last note in 'Free Bird' is struck," he says. "And that's what I'm gonna do.
"Now, I was hoping he would be here and it would be with him. But his spirit is with us. I'm still gonna do that. My No.1 thing is Lynyrd Skynyrd, and it always will be."
His solo band's new single, 'Never Run Out of Road'
The Rickey Medlocke Band's new single, "Never Run Out of Road," has been around for years, Medlocke says. And they finally nailed it down recently for the new version of the Rickey Medlocke Band.
The song is based on his longtime love of touring and playing live.
"My life has always been about being on the road," Medlocke says. "At the end of a tour (with Lynyrd Skynyrd), I just hated to go home. … What it really comes down to, bro, the bottom line is: I love to play. I love to play music."
The single is also a fundraiser for the MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) movement. Proceeds benefit the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center and two other organizations, he says.
That fundraising goes hand-in-hand with the band's new record label, Rock the Cause.
"When you go with them, you select a charitable organization that really means something to you," Medlocke says. "Well, I'm over half native (American), and I picked the subject which is really ― not too many people realize this ― but it's an epidemic in this country and in Canada.
"Tens of thousands ― since they started tracking it ― of older women, middle-aged women, young women, young girls, children of native origin. … They've disappeared or they've been deceased under bad circumstances."
What's going on with Blackfoot
Medlocke revived his old Southern rock band, Blackfoot, in 2016 with a major twist: There wasn't a single member from the original '70s group . Medlocke produced the band and co-wrote most of the songs.
But that band doesn't exist anymore, he says.
"I put a halt to the name," he says. "I own the name. I opened the files, put it in its folder and tucked it away."
Melocke declined to go into why he did that, saying there were "a lot of reasons, too many" and that it was "hard to go into."
"I just felt like it was time to tuck it away," he said.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's ongoing legacy
Medlocke grew up with the founders of Lynyrd Skynyrd in Jacksonville. He played with the band in the early '70s, left to reform his band Blackfoot and then rejoined Skynyrd in 1996.
So he sees himself as a vital part of the band and its musical legacy.
"Contrary to what people believe, Gary (Rossington) never wanted the music to die with him," Medlocke says about the late Lynyrd Skynyrd guitar player. "He wanted the band to continue on and to take all those great songs and all that great music.
"Because Skynyrd is all about the music. And all about great songs. And the fans come out and they love it, and we just try to deliver it and give it 110 percent every night."
Medlocke says he still hasn't quit grappled with Rossington's death yet.
"You know, having lost Gary last year ― almost a year now ― having lost him, personally for me, I haven’t quite come to grips with it and settled with it yet," he says. "I still miss him."

Love Nazareth! Please do a tour date in Chicago, Illinois soon! My husband and I would love to buy tickets to see you! Nazareth is one of our favorite bands!
I loved every second of it. Small venues are always the best, because you can get closer and almost feel like you are in the show rather just watching it.
Great band, great energy and even banter. Totally recommend them

Disney Legend Richard M. Sherman , half of the Academy Award-winning songwriting team of the Sherman Brothers with his late brother, fellow Legend Robert B. Sherman, died today at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills at 95 from age-related illness.

Dick Nunis Dies: Legendary Former Chairman Of Walt Disney Attractions Who Helped Develop Disney World Resort Was 91
Sherman was a key member of Walt Disney’s inner circle of creative talents. He garnered nine Academy Award nominations (winning two Oscars for his work on the 1964 Mary Poppins ), won three Grammy Awards, and received 24 gold and platinum albums over the course of his 65-year career.
The Sherman brothers were perhaps best known for their work on Mary Poppins , for which they won Oscars for Best Score – Substantially Original, and Best Original Song for Chim Chim Cher-ee .
Another cherished song from the film, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious , became a pop hit, entering the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965, while the lullaby Feed the Birds became one of Walt’s favorite songs.
“Richard Sherman was the embodiment of what it means to be a Disney Legend, creating along with his brother Robert the beloved classics that have become a cherished part of the soundtrack of our lives,” said Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company. “From films like Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book to attractions like ‘it’s a small world ,’ the music of the Sherman Brothers has captured the hearts of generations of audiences. We are forever grateful for the mark Richard left on the world, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
Pete Docter, chief creative officer, Pixar Animation Studios, said, “You don’t get songs like Spoonful of Sugar without a genuine love of life, which Richard passed on to everyone lucky enough to be around him. Even in his 90s, he had more energy and enthusiasm than anyone, and I always left renewed by Richard’s infectious joy for life.”
In 1951, Gene Autry was the first to record a Sherman brothers song, Gold Can Buy You Anything But Love. But the songwriters’ big break wouldn’t come until seven years later, when Mouseketeer (and fellow future Disney Legend) Annette Funicello recorded their song, Tall Paul . That tune peaked at No. 7 on the charts, selling more than 700,000 singles.
The success of such songs caught the attention of Walt Disney, who hired the Sherman brothers as staff songwriters for The Walt Disney Studios. Soon, they would contribute to such feature films as The Absent-Minded Professor (1961), The Parent Trap (1961), Summer Magic (1963), The Sword in the Stone (1963), Mary Poppins (1964), That Darn Cat! (1965), Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966), The Jungle Book (1967), The Happiest Millionaire (1967), The Aristocats (1970), and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). They would ultimately write more than 200 songs for some 27 films and 24 television productions.
They also contributed music for a number of theme park attractions around the world, including There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow, The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room, and It’s a Small World.
In the early 1970s, the Sherman brothers left the Walt Disney Studios to pursue other film projects. They provided songs and occasional screenplays to such memorable family films as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), Snoopy Come Home (1972), Charlotte’s Web (1973), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1973), Huckleberry Finn (1974), and The Slipper and the Rose (1976).
The Sherman brothers made history in 1973 by becoming the only Americans ever to win 1st Prize at the Moscow Film Festival. The Russian equivalent to the Oscar was bestowed to the Sherman Brothers for their film musical, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , for which they penned the script and songs.
In 1976, The Slipper and the Rose was selected for Great Britain’s annual Royal Command Performance. This film similarly features a Sherman brothers’ screenplay and musical/song score.
In 1992, Walt Disney Records released a retrospective collection of their music, The Sherman Brothers: Disney’s Supercalifragilistic Songwriting Team . The brothers returned to the studio in 1998 to compose music for The Tigger Movie . That year, they also penned their autobiography, Walt’s Time: From Before to Beyond .
In 2009, a second compilation of hits, The Sherman Brothers Songbook , was released, and their life stories were told in the documentary film The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story (directed by Richard’s son, Gregory V. Sherman, in collaboration with Robert’s son, Jeffrey Sherman).
In 2005, Richard and Robert were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Three years later, the brothers were awarded the National Medal of the Arts, “for unforgettable songs and optimistic lyrics that have brought magic to the screen and stage. The Sherman brothers’ music has helped bring joy to millions.”
In 2010, Richard and fellow award-winning composer John Debney collaborated on the song Make Way for Tomorrow Today for Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2 . That same year, The Walt Disney Company saluted the Sherman brothers for their musical contributions to Disney Parks worldwide. They were honored with their very own “window” on Main Street, U.S.A. (at Disneyland Park in California), which states: “Two Brothers Tunemakers – Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman: We’ll Write Your Tunes For a Song.”
Richard was preceded in death by his brother in 2012. The following year, actors B. J. Novak and Jason Schwartzman portrayed Robert and Richard, respectively, in Saving Mr. Banks (2013), a dramatized account of the making of Mary Poppins .
Five years later, The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, rededicated Stage A as the Sherman Brothers Stage. At the time, Richard said, “It’s been a joy, it’s been an honor, and it’s been a privilege to work here at The Walt Disney Studios, working for Walt Disney and for all the brilliant, brilliant people with whom Bob and I associated through the years.”
In 2015, a television special chronicling his life, Richard M. Sherman: Songs of a Lifetime, produced by Disney Legend Don Hahn, debuted on PBS SoCal. Also in 2015, for the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration, Richard contributed the song A Kiss Goodnight, which was tied to his 2017 book of the same title from Disney Editions.
For The Walt Disney Studios, Richard wrote new lyrics for the live-action The Jungle Book (2016) and two years later appeared in Christopher Robin , for which he composed three new songs.
Most recently, Richard wrote a new song (with composer Fabrizio Mancinelli) for Disney Legend Andreas Deja’s 2023 animated short, Mushka. The song, Mushka’s Lullabye , was sung by soprano Holly Sedillos.
In 2023, Walt Disney Animation Studios revisited its 100-year history in the short film Once Upon a Studio . Richard returned to Walt’s office—the same place he and Robert would often perform Feed the Birds for Walt on Friday afternoons—to play piano in a key sequence.
Richard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth; son Gregory and grandsons William and Matthew; daughter Victoria Wolf, son-in-law Doug Wolf, and grandchildren Mandy and Anthony. He is also survived by his daughter from a previous marriage, Lynda Rothstein, as well as her two children and three grandchildren.
A private funeral is scheduled to take place Friday, May 31, at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles. Plans for a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
