Today (January 6, 2016): Hotel review: Mandarin Oriental Bangkok (Thailand).

Last december, I enjoyed a terrific stay at Bangkok’s most legendary and ultimate five-star hotel, the Mandarin Oriental, located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Timeless yet contemporary, classic yet cutting-edge, the hotel’s unique blend of luxury and comfort make this a haven of calm that has pleased travelers from all over the world for more than 135 years. The ultra luxe hotels features 339 rooms (most with river views) and 35 suites, in addition to no less than 9 outstanding restaurants and bars, and a brilliant spa.

Mandarin Oriental Bangkok features in my top 10 list of the  best luxury hotels in Thailand .

Have you ever stayed at this hotel? If so, what was our experience? Leave a comment .

PROS & THINGS I LIKE

  • The hotel enjoys a central yet very   peaceful and tranquil location in this hectic metropolitan city, whose population now numbers more than 8 million. Excellently situated within easy reach of all Bangkok’s main attractions, the hotel is only a short walk from the city’s famous skytrain, and a short boat ride from the famous Grand Palace.
  • The iconic five-star hotel is spread over two sites with the river in between . The hotel’s main complex (with lobby, room wings, bars, restaurants, and pool) is connected to the  gym, cooking school and Thai restaurant on the facing shoreline by means of charming, teak shuttle boats. Boats run every 5 to 10 minutes, so there is never a long waiting time.
  • The hotel has been an iconic   Bangkok landmark for decades, enjoying a reputation for style, service and excellence. The original structure was the first hotel built in Thailand when it opened as The Oriental in 1876. Since then, the hotel has always been the preferred Bangkok address of world leaders, royalty and celebrities. Audrey Hepburn, Richard Nixon, Michael Jackson, Princess Diana, Sophia Lauren, George W Bush, and David Beckham have all stayed here.
  • The hotel’s grand lobby and reception area  make a great first impression. Majestic floor-to-ceiling windows that face towards the Chao Phraya River, two royal elephants guarding the lift landing, and historical “temple bell” chandeliers are faithful to the hotel’s oriental heritage. I visited the hotel in December, during the festive season, and the lobby was sublimely decorated with spectacular flower arrangements everywhere and a magnificent, exotic Christmas tree.
  • Check in at the hotel is quite unique . Instead of the usual check-in at the reception counter, a member of the hotel staff escorted me directly to my room, where the actual check in was done. In addition, the welcome amenities were quite overwhelming: besides the usual welcome drink and fruit bowel, I also received a mini-boat with beautifully displayed macarons. I am not sure though if this is the standard check-in procedure for all guests.
  • The hotel has 358 rooms and 35 suites, spread over 3 wings: the river wing, the garden wing, and the author wing. During my visit, I stayed in a river wing’s deluxe room, which was located on a higher floor and came with superb river views. Featuring traditional Thai touches such as teak furniture and beautiful silk accompaniments, the rich decor of the room was stylish yet comfortable. Furnishings included a king bed swathed in luxurious linens, a desk with multi-region power and communications sockets, and a spacious bathroom with large soaking bath and luxurious amenities.
  • There is a butler on every floor , who sits at a desk near the elevators and is available 24 hours a day to help with any questions you may have about the hotel and its many facilities.
  • The hotel also has several specialty suites , which are among the best accommodations in the Thai capital. Suites in the historic authors’ wing are named after literary figures that once called the hotel their home, such as Joseph Conrad, James Michener and Somerset Maugham. The river wing contains deluxe two bedroom suites named after former guests or personages associated with the hotel including Barbara Cartland, Graham Green, and Jim Thompson.
  • One of the features that I like the most about this hotel, is the presence of large outdoor terraces  with tables and sun loungers along the river. This large outdoor space represents a nice oasis of calm in a vibrant environment and gives the hotel a ‘resort-in-a-city’ kind of vibe. It is lovely to relax on the terrace and watch the many varied boats and ships passing by.
  • The hotel has two pools , hidden amidst trees and garden so it doesn’t feel like you are surrounded by high-rise buildings. The pool has a separate kids area with a shallow end for the little ones. The cabanas comfortably offer space for four. Water and extra towels are brought right away. I appreciated the complimentary ice cream with sweetcorn and noodle toppings.
  • Since 1974, the hotel has been managed by the legendary Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group , one of the  best global luxury hotel brands . The group has grown from a well-respected Asian hotel company into a global brand and now operates, or has under development, more than 40 hotels. I have previously reviewed the Mandarin Oriental properties in Bodrum , Shanghai , Munich and Kuala Lumpur .
  • The hotel is one of the two flagship hotels of the Mandarin Oriental group . Yes, you read that right. Mandarin Oriental is probably the only hotel brand in the world to be in the unusual position of having two “flagship” properties, being The Mandarin in Hong Kong and The Oriental, Bangkok. In 1985, the company rationalized its corporate structure by combining these two renowned properties under a common name, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group . But it wasn’t until September 2008 that the hotel formally changed its name from The Oriental, Bangkok to Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.
  • Home to nine outstanding restaurants and bars , the Mandarin Oriental hotel is not only Bangkok’s most iconic hotel but also the city’s premier gourmet destination. And there is something for everyone: French fine dining at Le Normandie restaurant, traditional Thai at Sala Rim Naam restaurant, seafood at Lord Jim’s restaurant, Chinese cuisine at The China House restaurant, international bbq buffet at the Riverside Terrace restaurant, rustic Italian food Ciao Terrazza restaurant, and casual international dishes at The Verandah restaurant. Since I only stayed one night, I could not try them out all, but I had dinner at the Thai restaurant (where you can choose to sit outside on the riverside terrace or inside and enjoy a Thai show) and the food was delicious.
  • The breakfast buffet is served on the riverside terrace along the river and is of very good standard. The selection for breakfast is great, consisting of “oriental” yogurt, fruit loops for the little ones, breads, cheese, cold cuts, dim sum, eggs prepared to order, and many other things.
  • The spa , located accross the river and featuring classic Siamese aesthetics, is quite famous and has frequently been voted by magazines such as Conde Nast Traveler among the best in the world. It offers a range of unique treatments blending contemporary and ancient techniques. I had a 90 minute Oriental signature treatment, which combined Thai and European massage techniques. Before the start of the treatment, I was welcomed with a soothing tea, followed by a foot cleansing ritual and private consultation. Highly recommended!
  • With the rigorous demands of the Mandarin Oriental brand and the incredible number of staff (more than 1300 people are employed by the hotel), it’s not surprising that the service is top-notch and   one of the best in the world!   You will be treated like royalty.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is a class of its own. There may be hotels that are newer, more modern, and higher, but they do not compare with the timeless elegance of Bangkok’s grand dame. I did not encounter any issues during my stay, but you may want to know the following nonetheless:

  • With 393 rooms in three wings, the hotel is large and can feel busy from time to time . As one of Asia’s iconic hotels, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok also hosts many local functions, such as weddings and corporate events, which can make the public areas even more busy. But the good news is that there are always lovely sanctuaries to retreat to, such as the tree-lined swimming pool and the library with cabinets.
  • This is a very posh hotel. In the evening there is a strict “smart dress” policy in the lobby and throughout the hotel, which should be respected. Gentlemen need to wear long pants, and while that definitely contributes to the sophisticated ambiance of the hotel, it can be a bit uncomfortable in Bangkok’s subtropical climate with high humidity (as I experienced myself).
  • The rooms may feel a bit cramped by modern standards . In addition, the decor and furniture of the rooms is a bit dated, but the hotel is currently undertaking a comprehensive renovation so that should be a thing of the past soon.
  • WiFi is complimentary as long as you have made the room reservation online on the official Mandarin Oriental website . If not, you will have to pay for WiFi , which may be a concern for those who cannot live without network.
  • The view from the main pool towards the river is blocked by a small service building. Removal of that building would not only result in a spectacular river view from both the lobby and the pool area, but would also create a more spacious feeling in the pool area itself (perhaps a suggestion for the hotel’s architects when they renovate the pool area in the future).
  • Location: 9/10
  • Design: 8/10
  • Rooms: 8/10
  • Service: 10/10
  • Overall experience: very good: 8.8/10

TIPS FOR FUTURE GUESTS & SAVE MONEY

  • Save money : get complimentary VIP perks at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok when booking via Virtuoso  (e.g. room upgrade, daily breakfast, early check-in, late check-out, free WiFi, and $100 USD food & beverage credit). You need to log in or register (for free) to view and book these Virtuoso perks.
  • Save money : book your room with an additional 10% off making use of a Best Rate Guarantee .
  • Save money : read my  tips  for getting the best deal at a luxury hotel like the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok (and/or receiving many free perks).
  • Book a room on the hotel website to enjoy complimentary WiFi.
  • If you get to the hotel by taxi, then do not call the hotel Mandarin as most taxi drivers only know it by its original name, The Oriental (as I experienced myself).
  • Read my  tips  for preparing your trip in time.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The weather in Bangkok is dominated by a tropical monsoon climate which means there are three main seasons: a cool, dry season between November and February (which is the best period to visit the city); a hot, dry season from March to June, and a rainy season from July to October. As Bangkok holds claim to being the hottest city in the world, expect daytime temperatures to be in excess of 30 degrees centigrade throughout the year (with the possible exception of late December and early January). The two periods April to May and September to October are characterised by high, almost untolerable humidity. The southwest monsoons arrive between May and October bringing unsettled, cloudy conditions and, for many, this is a welcome respite.

HOW TO GET THERE

Bangkok is served by 2 airports and this  Tripadvisor  page gives great insightful information for getting from the airport to the city center.

  • Suvarnabhumi International Airport is located 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of downtown Bangkok and is a major hub in Asia. Check the  Wikipedia  page of Suvarnabhumi International Airport for an updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to this airport.
  • Don Mueang Airport is Bangkok’s regional commuter flight hub and the de facto low-cost airline hub. Check the  Wikipedia  page of Don Mueang Airport for an updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to this airport.

Thank you for your kind comment! It’s a stunning hotel indeed.

Great review! We love this hotel too. The last time, there was a young staff by the lifts and he would remember which floor the guests were on and would press the appropriate floor button for you! Truly impressive! And we had a lovely English afternoon tea experience in the lounge by the few shops off the main lobby. All sky lit with palms and wicker chairs. A rather colonial experience!

amazing review ! You have to visit in Singapore it´s so great there too !

Complete Guide: Best Time To Visit Bangkok and Things To Do

Bangkok is a city of contrasts, where modern skyscrapers stand alongside ancient temples, and bustling street markets coexist with upscale malls. Known for its lively street life, cultural landmarks, and thriving food scene, this capital of Thailand is a destination that appeals to all senses. However, given its tropical climate and seasonal variations, choosing the best time to visit can enhance your experience. Follow this comprehensive guide to help you choose the best time to visit Bangkok and plan your trip.

The Best Time: November to February

For most travelers, visiting Bangkok can be ideal between November and February. During these months, the city enjoys the coolest and driest weather of the year, making it perfect for exploring the outdoor wonders of Bangkok. The temperature ranges from 20°C to 31°C (68°F to 88°F), providing a comfortable climate for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Highlights of the Cool Season:

The Hot Season: March to June

From March to June, Bangkok heats up, with temperatures often soaring above 34°C (93°F). This is considered the hot season, and while it might not be the most comfortable time for outdoor activities, it’s an excellent period for enjoying the city’s indoor attractions, such as shopping malls, museums, and galleries.

Tips for the Hot Season:

The Rainy Season: July to October

The rainy season usually has high humidity with heavy showers. The rain often comes in short, intense bursts, usually in the afternoon or evening, which can bring a refreshing coolness after the heat of the day.

Advantages of the Rainy Season:

Making the Most of It:

Bangkok is a city that can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering its unique experiences. For the most pleasant weather, plan your visit between November and February. However, if you don’t mind the heat or the rain, the other months offer their own charms, along with fewer crowds and better deals.

Providing extraordinary service and overlooking the Chao Phraya river, the Mandarin Oriental is undeniably one of the city’s premier hotels. If you’re interested in history, a stay here is a must: it’s the longest established hotel in Thailand and became one of the Mandarin Oriental group’s flagship properties due to its distinguished history.

Walk into the hotel’s magnificent lobby, and you’ll be greeted by a spectacular flower display, for which the hotel is famous throughout Bangkok . Choose between a variety of rooms from entry-level luxury in the Superior Rooms to the considerably more spacious State Rooms and Authors’ Suites. Each room is designed in a colonial style with white slatted doors, dark wooden features and light pastel shades. You’ll benefit from a butler assigned to your room during your stay.

The hotel also has eight restaurants; take your pick between traditional Thai, seafood, fine French cuisine and many more options. Drink tea in the opulent Authors’ Lounge or enjoy some jazz and cocktails in the Bamboo Bar if you’re looking to unwind after a long flight.

In a prime location overlooking the Chao Phraya river, the Mandarin Oriental is close to some of Bangkok’s most popular attractions. Cruise along the ‘Venice of the East’ and take a long boat out onto the city canals, threading your way towards some of the city’s cultural highlights, including the Grand Palace, various temples and the famous Floating Market.

The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, perfectly positioned on the banks of the Chai Phraya River, has been welcoming the great and the good for almost 150 years, and today's its glitz, grandeur, glorious dining and sterling service continues to attract the upper crust in droves.

Most of Bangkok's top hotels can be found on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, thanks in no small part to the prestige the Mandarin Oriental bestows upon the area. From the hotel's riverfront terrace you can easily lose hours hypnotised by the sight of of rice barges, tug boats, ferries and longtails criss-crossing the water, colourful prayer ribbons fluttering in the breeze. The Grand Palace and Wat Po Temple are a short glide upriver and can be teamed with a private long-tail boat tour of the old Thonburi klongs (canals). The journey to the airport takes about 45 minutes by car.

Style and Character

The 12-room Oriental Hotel was built in a country known as The Kingdom of Siam. Now, in its 15th decade, it's the grandest dame in the Kingdom of Thailand, with nearly 400 rooms and suites, Michelin-star restaurants and a multi-award-winning spa. Attracting everyone from Thai royalty (you'll know them by their blinding jewels), to heads of state, to literary legends (Noel Coward, Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham to name a few) to Hollywood superstars, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando (more recent celebrity guests include Stanley Tucci, Michelle Yeoh and Russell Crowe).

Service and Facilities

Many of the Mandarin's staff have worked for the hotel for decades and have no doubt seen it all. No request is too large or too small: need a grand piano in your suite? A fireworks display? A team of Muay Thai-trained bodyguards? No problem. Require a different pillow, perhaps, or a cleaning cloth for your sunglasses? It will be sorted.

Extensive facilities are spread across both sides of the river (an ornately carved wooden pontoon will deliver you where you need to be) and includes the wonderful Mandarin Spa, a Bastien Gonzales pedicure studio, a 24-hour gym, a boxing studio, two outdoor swimming pools (one deep and one shallow) and glorious tropical gardens.

  • Fitness centre
  • Kids' club
  • Room service
  • Steam room/hammam
  • Tennis court

Having completed a full refurbishment in 2019, the hotel's 393 rooms are resplendent with teak floorboards, and elegant ivory, gold and French blue décor dotted with Thai artworks and handicrafts. Almost all of the rooms in the River Wing have balconies and river views. The much pricier rooms in the Garden Wing, which overlooks the original 19th-century hotel building, are split-level and have separate living rooms. All have lavish bathrooms with Japanese electronic toilets, large bathtubs and Thai silk kimonos. A collection of Author's Suites pay tribute to past literary guests, with individually designed interiors, collections of antiques and butler service.

Food and Drink

With two Michelin stars and a celebrity chef, Le Normadie by Alain Roux is the hotel's flagship, serving French fine dining with subtle nods to Thailand – sweetcorn soup with wild mushrooms and black truffle, flaked crab with Oscietra caviar and mango and mint salsa, Brittany blue lobster with ginger-flavoured vegetable julienne.

Le Normandie isn't the only exceptional place to eat within the hotel: one Michelin star Kinu by Takagi serves omakase tasting menus in 10-seater jewel box of a room; Baan Phraya features sophisticated Thai cuisine presented inside a 100-year old traditional Thai house located on the other side of the river; waterfront Ciao Terrazza has chef's tables, as well as superb pizzas. The Riverside Terrace is where you'll also find what I rate as one of the world's best hotel breakfasts; a sprawling buffet with stations offering everything from bloody marys, to Thai noodles, Chinese dim sum, to truffle scrambled eggs and French toast – the people watching is sensational.

Value for Money

Rooms start from THB 19,500 (£452), room only. Wi-Fi is included.

Access for guests with disabilities?

Yes. The hotel is fully accessible with a number of adapted rooms.

Family-Friendly?

Yes. Families are made welcome with connecting rooms, special children's amenities, kids' menus, a wading pool and the Sanook Sanook kids' club (open from 3pm to 11pm).

  • The Ultimate Guide To Chao Phraya River Cruise

12 Jun 2024

A boat cruise or river sightseeing tour is a thrilling and adventurous tour in Bangkok, allowing visitors to see Bangkok’s significant landmarks. Backed up with firsthand experience or online research, this style of guide can assist any visitor in selecting the best time of day tour or Chao Phraya River Cruise with a dinner option accompanied by details on the best routes to follow and other sightseeing attractions in Bangkok, and general tips about travelling in this city. Starting from the iconic jewel of Siam, the Grand Palace, to the bustling, colourful fabric of the city, the Chao Phraya River is the vein of Bangkok, and what better way to explore it than by gliding over it?

Chao Phraya River Cruise Routes

Here is a list of Chao Phraya River Cruise Routes that give you the unique hallmarks of Bangkok that can change your outlook. Check out the archaeological and magnificent attractions, such as the Grand Palace and Wat Arun, during the daytime while cruising in style on the traditional water taxi.

If the stroll is for a romantic occasion, then a dinner cruise will help add an extra edge, with the lights of the city reflecting on the river.

1.Classic Daytime Cruise

The Chao Phraya River excursion ‘Tour during the Day’ is specially catered to those who wish to get acquainted with Bangkok’s significant landmarks and attractions during daylight hours. It usually begins at Sathorn Pier and involves visiting key points such as the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and Wat Pho. As such, tourists can join the boat at any station, spend time sightseeing at the attractions, and then move to the next ship to the next station.

  • Grand Palace: The magnificent building once home to royalty is among the places to visit because of its architecture and historical background.
  • Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn): This temple has distinct towering structures; when you light them during the evenings, they add to the beauty.
  • Wat Pho: The magnificent temple of Wat Pho is well-known for embracing the Reclining Buddha; it is also considered the origin of Thai massage.

The Chao Phraya River in the evening brings another experience, as well-lit landmarks make the city come alive after dark. The last route may resemble the previous one, but it can showcase the daytime attractions with an incredible night sky view.

  • Illuminated Landmarks: Watch the eerie outlines of the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and other monuments lighten up at night.
  • City Lights: With Phew’s firing, Kwan is aware that Bangkok’s nightlife cannot be experienced from the water of the Chao Phraya River.

3. Chao Phraya River Cruise with Dinner

Chao Phraya River Cruise also depicts a pleasing scenario of having dinner with dignity.

If one wants to go for a touch of romance and suppers, then surely nothing can beat the Chao Phraya River Cruise, Bangkok. These cruises typically provide different selections of Thai and other international food, like Buffet meals and a set menu, accompanied by music and dance performances.

  • Buffet and Set Menus: There is no better way to enjoy a wide range of meals than while gazing at engaging scenery.
  • Live Entertainment: Adding to the magical atmosphere, our talented students perform traditional Thai music and dances.

Tip: Since this is a viral tour event, it would be wise to book in advance, particularly when planning to take your dinner cruise during the busy tourist traffic season, to get the best table.

1. Iconic Temples

The location of the temples along the Chao Phraya River is another feature that makes them popular tourist destinations. These were not only holy places but had many structures and engravings.

  • Wat Arun: Temple of Dawn or Wat Arun with ionic-style porcelain decorated towers that glimmer in the sunrise.
  • Wat Pho: It has a gigantic image of Reclining Buddha and is also one of the reputed learning centres for Thai massage.
  • Wat Phra Kaew: A significant religious tower set within the complex of the Grand Palace, home to Thailand’s sacred Emerald Buddha.

2. Historical Landmarks

In addition to temples, the places of interest along the Chao Phraya River for tourists on the cruise cruise may include historical buildings instrumental in early Bangkok.

  • The Grand Palace: one of the former royal residences, which features beautiful relics of historical Thai architecture and artistry.

  • The Oriental Hotel: A rather grand and opulent hotel with much history, which has earned quite a few celebrities as guests.

Tip: This is especially important as you pass landmarks, and instead of focusing on their identities, you get information about the structures from a guidebook or an app.

20 Best Places to Visit in Thailand — From the Country's Oldest National Park With Secret Waterfalls to Stunning Islands With Excellent Diving

There's no shortage of beautiful places to visit in Thailand.

Thailand is so much more than a travel destination — visiting is a bona fide rite of passage. From hostel-hopping backpackers to well-heeled five-star hotel aficionados, there’s something for everyone in “The Land of Smiles.”

My most recent trip to Thailand was in early 2022, when the country implemented strict entry requirements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, I was one of a few hundred thousand tourists who were allowed into the country, and it felt like I had many of the typically crowded attractions all to myself.

The beauty of Thailand is that it will show you different sides of itself no matter how many times you visit. From the idyllic white-sand beaches and palm-fringed islands in the south to the misty hillsides and temple-peppered mountains of the north, the rattle and hum under neon lights of nonstop Bangkok, and the ruins of ancient cities surrounded by jungle, Thailand never disappoints.

So, what are the best places to visit in Thailand? I reached out to a Thailand travel expert and threw in a bit of my own first-person experience to help you narrow down this ever-growing list.

For most travelers, an adventure in Thailand will likely kick off in the nonstop, energetic capital city, Bangkok. A dizzying destination and one of my favorite international cities, Bangkok is full-on sensory overload — but in the best way. Dig into sizzling street food; meander back alleys and bustling thoroughfares in search of small markets, shops, and hidden temples; cruise along the Chao Phraya River, and grab a cocktail at the dozens of sky-high rooftop bars.

Tip: Book a room at the Capella Bangkok or Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok — two iconic luxury hotels with stunning locations perched on the Chao Phraya River.

Second to Bangkok on most visitors’ lists is the northern city of Chiang Mai. Many travelers even prefer Chiang Mai to Bangkok for its relatively slower pace of life. The spectacular city is bursting with temples (Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a must) and humming with restaurants and bars.

"I would say for anybody, whether it's their first time or a repeat trip to Thailand, if you have been there or you haven't, [you have to visit] Chiang Mai," said Grant Ekelund , Travel + Leisure A-List advisor and senior travel consultant and Asia specialist at InsideAsia. "It's such a neat city. It’s one of those destinations that has something for everyone … Are you a foodie? Do you want to hike? See cool temples? Have amazing trekking opportunities? It can all be done [here], and it slots into any itinerary perfectly."

Koh Phi Phi

Thailand has more than 1,400 islands scattered around its coastline, but few are as famous or iconic as the Phi Phi Islands in the Andaman Sea. Comprising two islands — Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh — Koh Phi Phi is known for its natural beauty, excellent diving, and raucous party scene. For the latter, Phi Phi Don is the most famous. Phi Phi Leh, meanwhile, is uninhabited and beloved by those looking to disappear into nature. It was blasted into the public eye about two decades ago, when Leonardo DiCaprio's character went in search of an island paradise in the film "The Beach," which is set in real-life Maya Bay.

While we’re on the topic of Koh Phi Phi, we’d be remiss not to mention Krabi province as a whole. Located in southern Thailand, bordering the Andaman Sea, Krabi is home to many of the beautiful beaches and islands that make Thailand famous.

"I've been booking many [trips to] Krabi lately," said Ekelund. "It ticks a lot of boxes for people. You've got the beauty, cool cliffs, and interesting geology. It has a beach, but it's for people who don't want to simply park it on the sand for 10 days. Krabi offers activities and more." Some highlights include the beach town of Ao Nang, as well as islands like Phuket, Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Yai, Koh Lipe, Railay Beach, and several national parks.

Koh Yao Noi

My first trip to Thailand was to the small island of Koh Yao Noi back in 2013. One of the most beautiful islands in Phang Nga Bay, Koh Yao Noi is flecked off the coast of its sibling island, Koh Yao Yai. Sandy beaches and small fishing villages comprise most of the land here, along with the luxe Six Senses Yao Noi resort tucked along the eastern coast. The property’s infinity pool is legendary for its explosive sunrise views that blur the distinction between the sky and sea.

Many Thai cities have the ability to make visitors feel like they’re stepping back in time. But few create the illusion as vividly as Ayutthaya. Once the capital of the Kingdom of Siam, the ruins of Ayutthaya are breathtaking and hauntingly beautiful. It’s only an hour from Bangkok, making it an easy day trip or a great overnight excursion.

Sukhothai is another beautiful ancient city. "Sukhothai is for people who like history. I was taken by how beautiful the area is and how extensive the ruins are," said Ekelund. "We cycled around the ruins with a guide and got a great sense of the history. Sukhothai is much more rural and harder to reach, meaning it has fewer tourists. You also don't have a city built up around it."

Mae Hong Son Loop

Of all the places I've visited in Thailand, none stick with me as much as the Mae Hong Son Loop. This 300-mile route is most often tackled by travelers on the back of motorbikes looking to brave the mountain switchbacks that descend into the thick jungle and pass from small village to small village. It's not a journey to be taken lightly — motorbike experience is strongly recommended — but those who make the trip are rewarded with spectacular scenery and access to remote communities.

Khao Yai National Park

Thailand has more than 100 national parks. The oldest is Khao Yai National Park, which also happens to be the country's third-largest. Within the park lies a web of hiking trails, secret waterfalls, and herds of elephants.

"Khao Yai has a lot of bat caves, too, which is one of the coolest things I've ever experienced," said Ekelund. "I stood there for 30 minutes while an unending stream of bats flew over my head. It was all so beautiful. It's a beautiful park with waterfalls, trekking, and hiking. Plus, it's just a couple of hours [by car] from Bangkok."

Approximately two hours southeast of Chiang Mai is the city of Lampang. Much like many large cities in Thailand, Lampang has its fair share of temples, street food, and markets. But unlike the others, it feels like a place where time has stood still. Just listen for the sound of clip-clopping horse carts, still used for transportation, and you'll understand what I mean. Because of Lampang's integral role in the teak trade, many migrants from Myanmar made this northern city home, and you'll find teak mansions and Burmese-style temples everywhere.

Chiang Rai, a northern Thai city, is often glossed over as most visitors opt to stop in Chiang Mai instead. "I am always struck by how chill Chiang Rai is," said Ekelund. "It's a relaxing place to be and has cool stuff to do. It's a great city to walk through the neighborhoods and see people living their daily lives. I enjoyed the mountains, nearby villages, and opportunities for cultural exchange."

No list of best places to visit in Thailand would be complete without Phuket. While Phuket has a reputation for being crowded with resort after resort, the truth is it’s for a reason — the island is a beautiful place to be. Thailand's largest and most easily accessible island brings visitors in by the millions each year for its wide array of hotels, white-sand beaches, parties in Patong, colorful snorkeling, and eclectic culinary scene.

Thailand’s second most popular island sits off the country’s eastern coast in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Samui is wreathed in bone-white sandy beaches, peppered with temples, veined with hiking trails, and splashed with fabulous resorts and energetic beach towns and villages.

"It's hard to beat Koh Samui. It's just beautiful," said Ekelund. "If you want easy access without a full resort stay, I recommend Anantara Bophut . You can walk to Fisherman's Village, and you won’t feel like you're 'stuck' at a resort. If you want a full resort experience, I like Banyan Tree Samui for its private beach and spectacular rooms."

The tiny island of Koh Tao, located in the Gulf of Thailand and not too far from Koh Samui, is one of the country’s best locations for diving and snorkeling. In fact, most avid divers will tell you that Koh Tao is their destination of choice in Thailand. The palm-fringed island is best known for its abundance of sea turtles.

Kanchanaburi

Shrouded in thick jungle and sliced by miles of track belonging to what was once known as the “Death Railway,” Kanchanaburi has a dark and tragic history. The infamous train route, which crosses the River Kwai, was built from 1940 to 1943 by prisoners of war taken by the Japanese in World War II. Today, only a small section of the rail route is open and takes travelers on a journey through the mountain cliffs and bamboo forests of Kanchanaburi. "If you're into history, beautiful vistas, trains, and wildlife, you can get all of that in Kanchanaburi. It's a place not many tourists go, either, so it has a lot to offer," said Ekelund.

Trang is the province directly south of Krabi, which means it has the same beautiful stretch of Andaman Sea coastline, except with a fraction of the crowds. There’s no shortage of islands to explore around Trang, like Koh Kradan and Koh Muk. Koh Muk's crown jewel is the secret Emerald Cave, which can be entered via a dark tunnel that leads to a protected beach surrounded by towering limestone cliffs.

Located in the province of Phang Nga, Khao Lak can be thought of as Phuket’s much quieter cousin. Less than two hours from Phuket International Airport, Khao Lak is home to miles of sprawling, empty beaches, plus it offers easy access to beautiful national parks.

"I've been hyping Khao Lak quite a bit for people who want something quieter," said Ekelund. "You have easy access to the Phuket International Airport, but it's much more chill than the other Andaman Islands. It has beautiful beaches, good infrastructure, a great spot for dining, and it’s not hard to get to."

Whether or not you drive the Mae Hong Son Loop, you’ll want to stop in Pai when visiting northern Thailand. Once a sleepy community of expats, Pai has morphed into a must-visit backpacker destination. Visitors will find funky cafes and coffee shops, endless bars, guest houses, hostels, and a dispensary or two, particularly now that cannabis is no longer considered a narcotic in the country.

Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park

South of Bangkok, the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan is best known for the glamorous, frenetic beach town of Hua Hin. The province runs down the skinny arm of the country, bordering the Gulf of Thailand on one side and Myanmar on the other. Here’s where you'll find Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Thailand's first marine national park. The park's top attractions include a series of spectacular caves and a sprawling freshwater marsh. Visitors can enjoy the park’s beaches, islands, walking trails, and thick mangrove forests. It’s just an hour from Hua Hin and about 3.5 hours from Bangkok.

This long, skinny island, also in the province of Krabi, flies under the radar, but it’s one of my favorite places in the country. Koh Lanta is home to beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and the Mu Ko Lanta National Park, an amazing spot for diving and seeing undeveloped beaches.

oriental travel bangkok

Coach touring brand Globus has unveiled nine new independent tours for 2025, from Bangkok to Bali and Abu Dhabi to Nepal.

“With Globus Independent tours, our guests are free to enjoy the many benefits of touring, untethered and unscheduled,” APAC head of marketing, Globus family of brands (GFOB), Chris Fundell said.

“Providing hand-picked hotel accommodations, hand-selected optional excursions and the services of a local host – an expert dedicated to ensuring the trip goes off without a hitch – this unique travel style helps guests to uncover the perfect ways to spend their days on holiday. Globus Independent tours invite travellers to simply travel better – with ease – as they explore destinations across the globe.”

It is the largest list of exotic destinations Globus has unveiled to date, with the group inviting independent travellers to discover Asia with an Independent City Stay or Independent Tour from 2025.

“No other international tour operator has the depth and breadth of travel styles Globus offers guests – including independently minded travellers,” Fundell added.

The independent itineraries provide optional excursions to enhance traveller getaways as well as offer seamless extensions and destination add-ons to keep the adventure going.

“For travellers who love Globus but want to venture further, enjoying the world their way, without the group, our independent travel style ensures our guests enjoy ‘I’ time on holiday,” Fundell concluded.
