One of the most popular sights on Kauai is the stunning Napali Coast. Located on the north west side of Kauai, the 17 miles of coastline is absolutely spectacular. But it’s inaccessible by car, so if you’re hoping to see it (which you definitely should) you’ll need to go by boat, helicopter/plane, or by foot.

There are a lot of different tours to choose from. We’ve listed our top five picks below to help you find the best option for your trip. Read on to learn more about the best Napali Coast boat tours and book your trip.

Napali Coast Boat Tour FAQs

The ride to the Napali Coast can be rough. We have yet to go on a tour where someone doesn’t get seasick. So if you are prone to seasickness (or even if you’re not!) you might want to consider taking seasickness medication to help.

What are the different boat options for the Napali Coast boat tours?

Choosing the right type of boat for your adventure is important. The two main options are rafts (including Zodiac rafts) and catamarans (both power and sailing).

Rafts are easily maneuverable and fast, but you’re in for a less leisurely ride. Think of it as an adventure! An adventure where you’ll likely get wet and there’s a chance there won’t be shade. This is something Jordan and I would do but we wouldn’t bring our five-year-old son or our parents on a trip like this.

A catamaran is a more comfortable ride but you do miss some of the pep you get with a raft. It’s not quite as easy to zip in and out of sea caves (conditions permitting). But you’ll have shade and you likely won’t get wet if you don’t want to.

Where do Napali Coast Boat Tours depart from?

There are three main locations that you’ll find as departure points for Napali Coast Boat Tours:

Port Allen: Located just 15-20 minutes from Poipu on the south shore of Kauai, this is the most popular departure point for Napali Coast tours.  Click for directions to Port Allen .

Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor: 30 minutes from Poipu, this is the closest departure point to the Napali Coast from the south side.  Click for directions to Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor .

Hanalei Bay: On the north shore there are a handful of tour operators that leave from Hanalei Bay. This is the closest point of departure to the Napali Coast but the seas do get rough. Tours depart here March/April through October as the winter brings in large swells.

Where should you stay on Kauai? That’s a tough decision.

What’s the best time to visit the Napali coast?

You can visit the Napali Coast any time of year, but if you’re aiming for the calmest seas, your best bet is in the summer. During the winter months (October through March) waves can get large and the surf can get rough. The trip to and from the Napali Coast is rarely super smooth, but it’s usually better in the summer than in the winter.

That said, we’ve done the trip in mid-November and had an absolute blast.

Not sure when to plan your trip? We have you covered with our best time to visit Kauai article .

What’s included on a Napali Coast Boat tour?

There are two ways to see the Napali Coast: on a snorkeling tour or a sightseeing tour. We include options for both below.

On snorkeling tours, you can expect a meal (or two!), drinks (water, juice, soda, and occasionally alcoholic beverages), as well as snorkeling gear and a knowledgeable guide.

On dinner cruises, drinks and food are included as well as a knowledgeable guide.

Is a trip to the Napali Coast worth it?

If you’re coming to Kauai, I think a trip to see the stunning Napali coast is worth it. The stunning mountains and coastline are not accessible by car, so seeing it by boat, helicopter, plane, or hiking is the only way to experience it. The beauty is extraordinary and by taking a boat you also get to enjoy the wildlife that you meet along the way (often dolphins).

It’s one of our favorite things to do on Kauai ! If you have young kids who can’t go on a Napali Coast boat tour, check out our 24 Things to Do on Kauai with Kids .

A Napali Coast boat tour can be a rough ride for those with children or prone to seasickness. We recommend taking motion sickness medicine the night before your boat tour.

If seasickness or the chance of rough seas (winter months) doesn’t sound good to you, consider these other ways to see the Napali Coast of Kauai or go snorkeling on Kauai.

The 5 Best Napali Coast Boat Tours

There are a lot of excellent tours on the island, but we’ve narrowed it down to share with you what we think are the best Napali Coast boat tours around.

Napali Coast Tours from Hanalei Town (North Shore)

If you’re staying on the north shore in the summer, you are close to the Napali coast! So close in fact, that it’s only a 15-minute ride from Hanalei to the start of the Napali coast. But we warned — a trip from Hanalei is an adventure.

The tours run from March through October only (the north shore experiences huge surf in the winter). The catamaran holds 18 passengers and is available for both a morning and afternoon snorkeling tour (4 hours) as well as a 2-hour sightseeing tour (no snorkeling included).

There is no bathroom aboard the boat, so plan accordingly!

The rest of the best Napali Coast boat tours depart from Port Allen and Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor.

Custom-Built Boats for the Napali Coast

Explore the Napali Coast on Kauai-built boats — both a sailing catamaran and a power catamaran that take a max of 41 and 49 passengers, respectively. The owner Kevin is a boat builder. He designs and builds all the boats for Holo Holo Charters.

We’ve gone out with Holo Holo several times and we’ve always enjoyed our trip! We have a video at the end of the article of one of our experiences.

Holo Holo Charters offers four different tour options that all leave from Port Allen:

  • Ni’ihau and Napali Super Tour: 7 hours
  • Na Pali Snorkel Sail: 7 hours
  • Na Pali Sunset Dinner Sail: 4.5 hours
  • Na Pali Sunset Dinner Tour: 3.5 hours

We’ve done both the Ni’ihau and Napali Super Tour and the Napali Snorkel Sail and both were excellent.

Boats are shaded in the cabin area and tours are available to children ages 5 and over.

Snorkeling tours include snorkel gear, breakfast, and lunch, as well as beverages. Sunset cruises include dinner and drinks.

Napali Coast Sailing Tour

Blue Ocean Adventure Tours (Napali Explorer) offers twice-daily power catamaran tours. On each catamaran, you’ll have a max of 40 passengers. The tours leave from the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor, so it’s the closest spot on the west side of the island to the Napali Coast.

The morning and afternoon tours offer 45 minutes of snorkeling and snorkeling gear is included. On the 4.5-hour tour, you’ll also have a Hawaiian-style BBQ lunch with water, juice, and soda.

And for the kids (and really adults too), there is an inflatable water slide on the boat.

Napali Coast Adventure on a Power Raft (small group tour)

Head out to the Napali coast on a zodiac with Kauai Z Tours. This tour includes snorkeling, but like most of the tours offered, the emphasis is on the scenery and less on the time in the water.

Kauai Z Tours operates their tours on a 25’ rigid hull zodiac boat, which is coast guard approved for a maximum of 14 passengers. Zodiacs or rafts are known for their speed and maneuverability, so this is more of an adventurous ride. There is no shade or covering on the boat, so hats, sun-protective clothing, and reef-safe sunscreen are a must.

During this five-hour tour, you’ll get to cruise up the west side of the island to the Napali coast in a zodiac raft that seats 14. Included in your tour is a dry bag, snorkeling gear, juice and water, as well as a deli-style lunch.

The tour departs from Kekaha (the Kikiaola small boat harbor), which is approximately a 32-minute drive from Poipu. This is approximately 17 minutes up the road from Port Allen (closer to the Napali Coast), where some other tours leave from.

Learn more about the Napali Coast Zodiac rafting tour.

Kauai Z Tours doesn’t just specialize in Napali coast tours — you can book south shore snorkeling tours as well as whale-watching tours .

Hawaiian-Owned Napali Coast Boat Tours

Makana Charters is a native Hawaiian-owned business with ancient roots on the island. They have 15 years of experience running tours on the Napali coast.

Makana Charters offers the same Napali coast tour but on four different catamarans.

Learn more about Makana’s tour and pick the catamaran that’s right for you.

All tours depart from the Kikiaola small boat harbor, approximately 32 minutes from Poipu, a close departure point for the Napali Coast. That means more time is spent seeing the coast and snorkeling, and less time is spent getting there.

Included in the tour is the use of snorkeling gear, juice and water, as well as a deli-style lunch and snacks.

They can accommodate children 3 and up and pregnant women (weather-dependent and with a doctor’s note). They offer morning and afternoon tours as well as private tours.

From humpback whales and spinner dolphins to peaceful sea turtles, Hawaii's beautiful seas teem with wildlife. Observing these creatures alongside Kauai' s dramatic cliffs is best done from the water aboard a catamaran, a kayak or even an inflatable raft. The tour also includes a hot dinner, as well as mai tais, beer and wine. Tourgoers describe the crew as exceptional and say the views are fabulous. Reviews for the food are more mixed, with many describing the dishes as average. Several travelers also warn of choppy waters and advise taking motion sickness medication ahead of your cruise.

In addition to snorkeling equipment, tourgoers also have access to boogie boards, pool noodles and a slide on the boat. The trip also includes breakfast and a deli-style lunch with beer, wine and mai tais, as well as nonalcoholic beverages. Travelers report seeing lots of wildlife and praise the friendly crew.

Tours are generally available Tuesday, Friday and Sunday with a 6 a.m. check-in time. You may receive a slight discount by booking online ahead of time. Children younger than 5 are not permitted on the tour. Blue Dolphin operates a few other snorkel tours, as well as a whale watching trip and sunset cruises.

Kauai Sea Tours – Na Pali Raft Tour

Price: Adults from $190; kids from $180 Duration: 5 to 5.5 hours

Thanks to the boat's design, it can access sea caves, go beneath waterfalls and hug the coast, allowing passengers an up-close look at nature. Participants have the opportunity to snorkel and enjoy a packed lunch and nonalcoholic drinks while on the excursion. Tour-takers praise the crew and say they enjoy the views and the plentiful wildlife, ranging from dolphins to monk seals to turtles. Others caution the ride can get choppy.

Trips depart at 7 a.m. year-round, and additional tours at 1:30 p.m. are offered from June through August. Kids must be 7 or older to participate. The company also offers whale watching tours and sunset cruises on traditional boats.

Na Pali Coast Tours – Na Pali Sight See Adventure

Calling all thrill-seekers! This catamaran tour departing from Hanalei Bay promises lots of adventure, jaw-dropping views and plenty of speed. Reviewers also appreciate the ability to access multiple sea caves thanks to the boat's easy maneuverability. Though the boat affords up-close views of the coast, it doesn't protect against sea spray and is not equipped with a restroom, so keep that in mind when booking.

Tours typically depart Monday through Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (though offerings may vary by season). A maximum of 18 passengers are permitted on board. Due to the more adventurous nature of this tour, it's not recommended for children younger than 4 years old, pregnant people or those with back or neck issues. The Na Pali Coast of Kauai: 3 Ways to Visit (+ Best 2024 Tours!)

Is the Na Pali Coast at the top of your Kauai bucket list? Read on to discover how to visit the jaw-dropping Na Pali coastline in Kauai!

Stretching for 17 sensational miles along the northwestern coast of Kauai, the Na Pali Coast is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes you’ll see anywhere on the planet, and is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii .

Experiencing the beauty of the Na Pali Coast is without a doubt one of the top things to do in Kauai .

You’ve probably seen the jagged spires of the nā pali (“many cliffs” in Hawaiian) rising up beside the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean in photos online — the Na Pali Coast is one of the most photographed places in Hawaii.

With their red, pink, and rust hues contrasting with the rich emerald or light green on the slopes and valleys, the towering coastal cliffs are dramatic, if a little forbidding, in their beauty.

Some of the cliffs rise up almost straight up, as much as 4,000 feet above the ocean.

In between the cliffs are impossibly narrow, and lush, valleys. Incredibly, they were once settled.

The Hawaiians that lived here cultivated taro and other crops on terraces cut into the hillsides, and fished to supplement their diet.

They also traded with other communities, using outrigger canoes to venture out in the summertime when the waters are calmer. The only other way of transport in and out of the valleys was via strenuous foot trails.

Sadly, the population here was drastically impacted by diseases brought in by foreigners, and eventually the Hawaiians that were left on the coast departed for other places, attracted by the potential for an easier lifestyle elsewhere.

Today, even though it is remote, the Na Pali Coast is one of the bucket-list destinations for travelers to Kauai.

The towering cliffs, verdant valleys, beautiful waterfalls, pristine beaches, and picturesque sea arches and caves of the Na Pali Coast are irresistible to anyone that loves the majesty of nature.

The Honopu Arch along the Na Pali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii

For visitors that arrive by boat, or even hikers, there’s the added attraction of seeing marine life in the water.

Spinner dolphins cavorting in the waters are a common sight, and you may see humpback whales in the winter.

Boat tours may also offer the opportunity to snorkel, and you can look for sea turtles in addition to colorful fish and coral .

While visiting the Na Pali Coast is definitely an adventure, a first visit to Kauai isn’t really complete without admiring this place of infinite beauty, provided the weather gods are on your side.

And once you visit, you’ll want to put the Na Pali Coast on your Kauai itinerary every time you visit the Garden Isle!

Excited? Let’s show you how to visit the spectacular Na Pali Coast of Kauai, along with our tips for the best experience!

The Three Ways to Visit the Na Pali Coast of Kauai

There is no road access into the Na Pali Coast.

Currently, you can admire the beauty of the Na Pali Coast in one of three ways: from the air, from the water, or by hiking.

We describe each of the three ways in more detail below.

We’ve done a doors-on helicopter tour over the Na Pali Coast, and we’ve enjoyed a sunset catamaran cruise to the coast. We loved both these ways of experiencing the Na Pali Coast!

A rainbow over the Na Pali Coast of Kauai Hawaii

While we aren’t big hikers, we’ve also hiked a portion of the Kalalau Trail to get up close to the beauty of the coast.

Whichever option you choose for your Napali Coast adventure, note that visiting this beautiful part of the Garden Isle requires some planning!

1. Soar over the Na Pali Coast on a Helicopter Tour

Probably the most thrilling way of experiencing the spectacular beauty of the Na Pali Coast is to take a helicopter tour over Kauai.

Although most Kauai helicopter tours are whole-island tours, you can bet that the Na Pali Coast is high on the flight itinerary on most tours!

The Na Pali Coast of Kauai from a helicopter

If the weather permits, your helicopter pilot will fly low over the serrated ridges, so that you can ooh and aah at the magnificent scenery unfolding beneath you.

Viewing the cliffs, with their red and green hues, rising up by the side of the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean is a thrilling experience that will stay with you for a long time.

You may even fly low enough, or hover, to see the lush narrow valleys up close, waterfalls flowing down the slopes, and the pristine coves that line the coast.

A waterfall along the Na Pali Coast of Kauai, seen from a helicopter

While both doors-on and doors-off helicopter tours offer great views over the Na Pali Coast (most of the photos here were taken on a doors-on tour), there’s no doubt that having nothing between you and the beauty of the Na Pali Coast is quite an experience!

Morning or afternoon flight?

Should you pick a morning flight or an afternoon one? There isn’t a clear-cut answer!

Mornings usually tend to be less prone to weather disruptions. Clouds usually roll in and winds kick up as the day progresses, making later departures more likely to be canceled.

On the other hand, the Na Pali cliffs tend to be in the shadow in the morning. The sun shines on the cliffs in the afternoon, making it much nicer for photography.

If you are a serious photographer, though, check to see what the company you choose for your tour will allow in terms of gear.

Which time of day you choose is up to you, but we suggest booking the tour early in your itinerary so if it does get canceled, you have the option to reschedule before you have to leave!

Flights over the Na Pali Coast

This popular doors-off Kauai helicopter tour offers you morning or afternoon departure times. The total flight time is 45 to 50 minutes.

Flying over the Na Pali Coast of Kauai, Hawaii

You can also fly over Kauai in a small aircraft. The slow-flying airplane with large windows is made especially for sightseeing.

This super popular airplane tour over Kauai lasts about an hour and you’ll fly over many Kauai landmarks, including, of course, the Na Pali Coast.

Several departures are offered through the day and the tour is narrated.

You can bring a camera on board, and, if you have a GoPro, they may even mount it on the exterior of the plane for an extra fee.

2. Admire the Na Pali Coast from a Boat!

Boat tours are by far the most popular way of experiencing the Na Pali Coast.

Not only can you admire the coast at leisure from the water, you may even be able to get close to one of the may Na Pali Coast waterfalls!

One of many Na Pali Coast waterfalls you may see on a boat tour of the coast in Kauai!

While boat tours are still pricey, they aren’t quite as pricey as helicopter tours.

And, one of the advantages of boat tours is that you may see marine life on your way to the Na Pali Coast and back!

Plus, you can choose to snorkel in the turquoise waters if you choose a snorkeling tour .

Boat Tour Departure Points

In the summer, some smaller vessel Na Pali Coast tours depart from Hanalei on the north shore. Year-round, boat tours depart from Port Allen on the south shore.

So no matter when you visit Kauai, weather permitting, you can take a boat tour to the famous coast.

The advantage of departing from Hanalei is that the Na Pali Coast is very close, so you do not spend a lot of time getting to and from the coast. 50-foot catamarans and smaller vessels depart from the north shore.

But the very largest catamarans only depart from Port Allen, so if that’s the type of boat you choose, plan on departing from the south shore.

What type of boat should you choose?

When it comes to Na Pali Coast boat tours, you have several choices. You can pick a large catamaran, a smaller boat, or a raft!

The largest (60-foot) catamarans depart from Port Allen. While you’ll be sharing the boat with more people, larger boats tend to be more stable.

The waters around the Na Pali Coast can get very choppy, so if you prefer a more stable Na Pali Coast boat experience, a larger vessel is definitely the way to go!

The larger boats are also likely to offer more amenities, such as restrooms.

But be aware that the larger boats may not be able to maneuver in and out of sea caves along the coast, or get you close enough to be sprayed by a Na Pali Coast waterfall.

A Na Pali Coast waterfall from the water in Kauai, HI

For a more intimate experience, you can choose a slightly smaller catamaran or other boat, and there are even some sailing options available.

Adventure lovers may want to consider a zodiac raft tour of the Na Pali Coast!

A zodiac raft is an inflatable rigid boat, agile enough to get in and out of the sea caves along the coast, and get under waterfalls, for a much more thrilling and immersive experience.

You’ll also be closer to marine life en route, such as spinner dolphins.

And some raft tours can actually land at Nu’alolo Kai, where you can explore the remains of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village.

On the flip side, however, your ride will be much choppier, so it’s not for visitors that are prone to motion sickness or those with back or neck problems.

Plus, given the small size of the raft (generally about 12-14 people or so), there are no bathrooms or other amenities on board.

And it’s so noisy, with the waves and the motor of the boat, that no commentary is usually possible.

Morning or afternoon boat tour?

The waters along the Na Pali Coast are usually calmer in the early morning, so if a stable ride is important, pick a morning tour.

But even on morning tours, by the time you head back, the trade winds will most likely have kicked up, creating some motion on the return journey.

The light is better for photos on afternoon tours, as the sunlight falls on the cliffs during the afternoon, bringing out their colors vividly.

The Most Popular Na Pali Coast Boat Tours

This deluxe Na Pali morning snorkel tour on the Lucky Lady is a half-day excursion that will take you past the spectacular scenery of the coast.

Kayaking the Na Pali Coast

You can also paddle down the Na Pali Coast in the summer, at a time when the surf is small.

On a kayaking tour, you’ll start at Ha’ena, the eastern part of the coast, and end at Polihale Beach, on the western end.

It’s best to join a guided kayaking tour , and you need to be in top shape, a strong swimmer, and experienced kayaker, because it’s not an easy trip.

On a guided tour, you’ll likely have a lunch stop at Miloli’i Beach. Miloli’i, and Kalalau Valley, with a camping permit, are the only two places along the coast where you can legally land.

With an overnight permit, kayakers can camp at either Kalalau Valley, or Miloli’i Valley (only in the summer).

3. Hiking the Na Pali Coast

A helicopter tour or a boat tour is a wonderful way to experience the Na Pali Coast, but if you want to get up close to its beauty — see rare plants at touching distance, or swim in the plunge pool of a Na Pali waterfall — then you have to hike!

The Kalalau Trail is the hiking trail that traverses the coast. It’s the only way to access the Na Pali Coast via land.

Kalalau Trail Kauai HI

The epic trail is 11 miles each way, and most hikers do it as a backpacking trip, spending one or more nights at a campsite.

An overnight camping permit is required to hike the trail beyond Hanakapiai Beach, and permits can be obtained here .

Starting at Ke’e Beach in Ha’ena State Park , the trail makes its way through five valleys along the Na Pali Coast and ends at Kalalau Beach, where it is blocked by vertical fluted cliffs.

Along the way, the trail drops down to the ocean at Hanakapiai Beach and then at Kalalau Beach.

The trail is much like the old foot trail that connected settlements here in earlier times!

En route, hikers are treated to glorious views, both over the ocean and along the coast.

Native and introduced Hawaiian plants are abundant along the trail, and many rare and endangered species grow along the cliffs.

Look for wild goats on the cliffs and whales spouting in the waters below in season!

Day Hikes at the Na Pali Coast

Hikers that want to experience the Kalalau Trail but not want to do the entire trail have several day hike options!

You can hike just about one half of a mile to a viewpoint for fabulous views over Ke’e Beach, or hike the moderate to strenuous trail two miles each way to Hanakapiai Beach and back.

A view of Ke'e Beach from the Kalalau Trail in Kauai, HI

And if you want to experience one of the valleys in the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, you can hike four miles each way to Hanakapiai Falls, one of the best waterfalls in Kauai . You may even be able to slide into the plunge pool here for a dip.

This trail is strenuous and involves detouring inland from the Kalalau Trail at Hanakapiai Beach. There are several stream crossings!

The trailhead for the Kalalau Trail is within Ha’ena State Park , one of the most-visited state parks in Kauai . Entry and parking reservations are required for Ha’ena State Park, and can be obtained here .

Note that visitation to the park is regulated and spots get snapped up as soon as they become available. Stay on top of the reservations calendar to make sure you do not miss out!

We have a detailed guide to visiting Haena State Park that you must read if you plan to visit.

Taking a dip and watching the sun set at Ke’e Beach, one of the best swimming beaches in Kauai , is a great way to end your hiking adventure in the Na Pali Coast!

Tips for Visiting the Na Pali Coast

Get oriented: where is the na pali coast.

The Na Pali Coast is located in the northwest part of the island of Kauai in Hawaii (see map ).

Ha’ena State Park is the eastern end of the coast. From Ke’e Beach, inside Ha’ena State Park, you can actually see the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast.

The trailhead for the Kalalau Trail into the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park also starts by Ke’e Beach.

Polihale Beach in Polihale State Park is the western end of the coast, and you can view the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast from here as well.

You can also admire the Na Pali Coast from viewpoints in Koke’e State Park , which is located along the west coast of Kauai.

Na Pali Coast from Kokee State Park in Kauai, Hawaii

The Kalalau Lookout and the Pu’u O Kila Lookout offer fantastic views into the ridges and valleys of the coast on clear days.

Visit the Na Pali Coast in the summer for the best weather!

Kauai can get very rainy in the winter months, especially along the northern portions of the island.

Since the scenery is the primary reason to visit, and helicopter and boat tours can be expensive, you’ll want to schedule your trip for a time when the weather isn’t likely to dampen your adventure.

Not only is it usually cloudy and rainy in the winter, the ocean is also very rough along the north shore of Kauai, with huge waves.

In fact, boat, raft, and kayak trips to the Na Pali Coast only depart from the north shore during the summer months, because the ocean can get really rough along the north shore in the winter.

Hiking the Na Pali Coast is also more uncomfortable and more dangerous in adverse weather.

For your best shot at a bright sunny day for your Na Pali Coast adventure, plan to visit in the summer, between late May and early September.

The Na Pali Coast of Kauai in Hawaii

Book your Na Pali Coast boat or helicopter tour early in your trip

Weather on Kauai can turn at any time, and both helicopter flights and boat tours are subject to cancelation if weather is unfavorable.

Since admiring the Na Pali Coast is likely high on your wish-list for Kauai, book your boat or aerial tour for as early in your stay as you can.

If your tour does get canceled for some reason, this will give you the opportunity to reschedule or book another tour for a later day in your stay.

Book a morning tour for clearer skies and calmer waters

Mornings on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast tend to be better weather-wise. The ocean is generally calmer, if you are planning a boat tour, and the skies clearer if you are planning an aerial tour.

In the afternoons, clouds usually roll in, and by late morning, swells in the ocean kick up.

Afternoon helicopter or boat tours are usually more apt to be canceled on account of weather than morning tours.

Although our captain was able to get our boat very close to one of the Na Pali Coast waterfalls despite choppy waters, I imagine it’s much easier in the mornings when the waters are calmer.

Vegetation along the Kalalau Trail in Kauai

Book an afternoon tour for better light for photography

If you are very particular about the light for your photos, pick a bright sunny afternoon! When the sun’s rays fall on the cliffs, as they do in the afternoons, the colors of the cliffs look sensational.

In the mornings, the sun is behind the cliffs, so they are in the shadows for the most part.

Bring a rain jacket on your Na Pali Coast boat tour or hike!

On a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast, if the swells kick up, you will likely be sprayed as you travel back and forth.

Bring a light rain jacket with a hood to stay protected, especially if you choose a smaller boat or a raft!

A rain jacket is also useful when you are hiking the Kalalau Trail, as showers (and misty weather) are possible at any time.

Over 1,000 Reviews on TripAdvisor

"This tour was the ideal experience for exploring the North Shore of Kauai. Captain Steve and his son were so knowledgeable about everything, from the names of the waterfalls to the legends the cliffs and valleys hold. I’ve only done a tour like this once before, and it was on a zodiac boat, which was bumpy and not as enjoyable. This boat was the ideal size to handle the waves, as well as fit into sea caves along the Napoli Coast. Captain Steve was an excellent driver, and we never felt unsafe, even inside caves with big waves. I would highly recommend this family-owned and operated company for your next boat tour."

"My husband and I did the afternoon 4 hour Na Pali coast and snorkel tour. It was the highlight of our time in Kauai! Captain Steve and his co-captain (blanking on her name but she was awesome) were fantastic tour guides. I loved Captain Steve's personal touches to every story he told about the coast as well as his knowledge and understanding of the ocean. He took us through sea caves and gave us a taste of the Na Pali "Rollercoaster Ride." The snorkeling was awesome too! Both of them gave clear instructions about safety and frequently checked on passengers to make sure everyone was feeling OK. In addition to the actual tour, their website explains exactly what you get and gives accurate information about what to expect. We went during a time when Kuhio highway to Hanalei was under construction due to a landslide a few months prior and there was a limited amount of time to get into the area. It was clearly stated on the website along with the time you needed to make the trip. The booking staff did a great job communicating with us about what to expect and was very helpful. I cannot say enough great things about this tour and company! Definitely recommend!!"

"To be honest, we accidentally booked this tour instead of one the the competitors that we had done before—and we are so glad we did! Captain Steve and his mate Dave were fantastic, super informative and fun, and they took us into coves and caves that we’d missed before. The lunch was surprisingly good! This is one tour you don’t want to miss, the Napali coast is beyond stunning from this viewpoint, and the snorkeling was great as well. It was definitely a highlight of our trip."

"Wonderful staff, left on time, organized, beautiful views of the coast and sea caves along the way, great snorkeling location where you get to see all kinds of sea life and well worth the price to be able to leave right from Hanalei Bay."

"If you want to ride out on some massive waves and get a great view of the Napali coast, book this adventure with captain Steve & crew. Cap'n Steve navigated the Northern waters with ease and grace. My wife and I had a blast going in & out of remote sea caves and under water falls on this epic tour. An absolute must do on a Kauai visit."

Very organized and all staff very courteous and ready to take care of every need. Staff encourage safety at all times but bring much fun to the trip. Highly recommended! So much fun! Food simple but delicious!

Yes I would totally recommend anyone try this. The captain was friendly, informative & boy can he sing! Kelly & Joff were also amazing, friendly & helpful. I’d take the sunset cruise again

This is an amazing boat tour. Saw dolphins and even a whale! Great food, drinks, and views. But this experience was made by the crew – Nicole and Kai. They gave my friends and me an unforgettable experience. I would recommend them the next time I go. Great at entertaining, taking photos, and keeping your drinks filled! Thanks for a great time Nicole and Kai!

Super friendly staff. Our captain was awesome and the crew was great too. Super nice people and they definitely do make the trip so much more enjoyable. The crew is constantly interacting with the tourists. They tell stories of the areas that you are visiting and offer to take pictures constantly. Overall a very very nice experience.

Captain Cole, Big Rob and Luke were phenomenal hosts! My husband and I were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and Big Rob made sure we having a blast! I definitely recommend this cruise and crew!!!

Best boat tour EVER! Captain Cole, Ruby–who surprised us with a lovely Hula- and always smiling Rob were fantastic caring for the entire crew–some of whom were having a rough time with the “adventurous” waves. The rest of had a blast, waves were fun, views astounding and the food and drink abundant and great . Even before setting out we saw sea turtles, but once out of dock we saw several dolphins who raced along with us and tiny flying fish called sea robins.. SO COOL! Coming back to Kauai next year just for this trip. Mahalo!

Simply spectacular! I’ve been on the Sunset Dinner Cruise 3 times and I am never disappointed. Beautiful views, good food and drink and the crew is amazing!! Capt. Cole, Elia & Rob – you all did a fantastic job! We had a wonderful time and will see you again next year. Staff at the office are always friendly and very helpful. Highly recommend!!!!

We did the Na Pali Sunset Dinner Cruise and even though it was very rainy and we didn’t see much of the coast, the trip was great. The staff, Capt. Roy, Nicole & Stacy worked their butts off and did an excellent job. Got to see some spinner dolphins right next to the boat! The food was delicious and the libations were plentiful. We finished off with a beautiful sunset. Top notch company and the souvenir store had very reasonable prices…

What an incredible experience! Seeing the napali coast from the catamaran was an experience I will not forgot. We started by seeing amazing dolphins. Stopped at our snorkel spot. Snorkeled with a monk seal and turtles. Hopped on to enjoy breakfast. Then cruised the coastline. More dolphins and some awesome facts and history from Captain Chris (who was FANTASTIC). The crew was incredibly helpful, willing to take your picture, get you a drink if needed. Jake the first mate also gave us some awesome hikes to do for our remainder of our time on the island. Finished with a great lunch. An experience I won’t forget and would recommend to anyone traveling to Kauai.

We had a blast with Captain Dave and Dane on the zodiac tour with snorkeling. Dave went way up the napali coast to a great snorkel spot and he took us into a ton of great caves, giving us time to take pictures and ogle the majestic coastline. Would definitely do again, especially the zodiac rafts which allowed us to get up close and personal with nature.

We did the morning tour of the napali coast. When they say dolphins guaranteed they mean it! The crew was super helpful and friendly and the food and drink were top notch. A big thank you to Capt. Joe for giving us all the interesting history of the various sites we visited along the way.

We enjoyed a spectacular evening cruise on the Na Pali coast with Captain Chris and his hard working crew. Crew members were delightful to be around and provided helpful suggestions for additional vacation activities.

Kelly, Koa and Captain Chad took great care of us. Such a fun trip. Captain Chad told us a lot of history and stopped the  boat to show us landmarks. Kelly and Koi made sure we had plenty to drink and we had a great supper buffet. At sunset they stopped the boat for pictures and Champaign. Best boat ride!  Would do it again. Great job.

Captain Joe and his crew did an excellent job of entertaining us while on the snorkeling cruise. He pointed out a pod of spinner dolphins and a few sea turtles. Had an exceptional sunset that evening. It was a great trip! Definitely recommend.

Captain Chris and the crew were very professional and friendly. Safety was paramount but they always had your interests at heart. Spectacular views, good commentary (jokes aside) and good company. The food was reasonable. Overall, a great experience.

We are Grandparents – in our 70’s. We were well taken care of by the crew. Even went snorkeling for the first time, coming from land locked Colorado. Would do again without hesitation. The highlight of our visit to Kauai.

We learned some history of the beautiful Napali Coast, experienced Kauai in a very unique and wonderful way. This excursion was worth every penny

We went on the 7 hour tour with captain Chad and crew, it was the absolute best. All of the crew was fantastic. Each crew member came by and talked to every single person on the boat. They waited on us and made sure everyone had a great time. We have done several of these tours in different parts of the world and we can honestly say this was by far our favorite. We even got to go under a waterfall. Thank you so much Captain Chad, Jeff, Kai, and Cori,  you were all the best!!

Big Rob and Little Rob were so kind and helpful!! I got sick on the boat (my fault, I didn’t take my medication). The two Robs checked on me constantly, they kept bringing me water and words of encouragement!  I would go again (with medication) because of the caring staff!!

Experience the Nā Pali Coast on a Boat Tour

Witness the incredible beauty of Kauai on the Nā Pali Coast. The nai’a 🐬 (dolphins and porpoises) cruise along the catamaran, so have your camera ready for amazing pictures! Captain Lani and the crew share Hawaiian culture and history along the way.

As we travel up north towards Nā Pali, you see the island of Niihau in the distance, approximately 17 miles away. It appears just a stone’s throw away.

Get up close and personal with majestic cliffs, sea caves, and a cascading waterfall. Then, we stop at a pristine, protected reef, Nu’alolo Kai, to swim and snorkel. At one time, it was an active, productive Hawaiian fishing village. You may see the honu 🐢 (sea turtles) swimming in their own environment.

Snorkel gear and instructions are provided. Foam noodles are also available.

A deli-style lunch is available ; build your own sandwich of turkey, ham, two types of cheeses, two types of bread, lettuce, and tomatoes. For dessert, there is fresh pineapple and vanilla cinnamon cake. Sodas and juices are also available.

  • Chevron down What to Bring
  • Make sure to bring a water bottle or a Hydro Flax with water! Only metal water bottles allowed to promote environmentalism and protect the oceans.
  • Wear comfortable clothing — swimwear, cover-up, shorts, and a t-shirt. Protect yourself from the sun. Wear a long sleeve t-shirt and a hat or visor.
  • Bring a bag or backpack with a towel and a camera.
  • Wear comfortable footwear, slippers, or sandals. You will be barefoot on board. If you need to wear footwear, wear your own aqua shoes. However, do not walk down with the aqua shoes as they will gather the red dirt. Red dirt and seawater make for red paste — not good for Catamaran Kahanu.
  • Chevron down Weather Conditions

Your safety is our priority. Captain Lani and the crew are experienced watermen — we guarantee your comfort, enjoyment, and satisfaction. During winter months, ocean conditions can be rough in the Nā Pali Coast. If needed, Captain Lani will go to calmer waters.

  • Chevron down Note
  • All passengers must be in good health — no bad backs, heart conditions, recent surgery, or pregnant women allowed.
  • If you are a non-swimmer or need any special assistance, please let us know in the comment section at check-out.

  • 35ft Deluxe Power Catamaran
  • 1 Captain + 1 Crew + 18 passengers
  • Custom made & designed for Na Pali Coast
  • Smoothest ride of the fleet!

The perfect balance between comfort and adventure!

Our brand new 35ft Deluxe Power Catamaran was custom designed for touring Na Pali Coast and was built with our guests in mind. She’s the perfect size for Na Pali; large enough to handle the seas and keep you comfortable, and small enough to fit into the various sea caves when conditions permit. She’s also the only boat in our fleet that has a marine head (a teeny tiny restroom) if a true emergency situation arises. For those seeking an adventure ride but don’t want to sacrifice comfort; this modern cutting edge vessel, won’t let you down.

Carefully select a tour below that has bullet points that agree with your priorities. In general, expect MUCH calmer seas in the morning with greater marine life encounter odds. In the afternoon, the sea state gets a lot more “exciting” with increased winds, but the pay off is seeing Na Pali Coast light up as the sun positions itself perfectly to showcase Na Pali’s beauty. Reservations in advance are a must, so don’t wait and book your tour today!

Note: This is NOT a sailboat, this is a really fun high speed “power” catamaran, ideal for Na Pali Coast.

  • Smoother seas in the morning (Earlier the better for lighter winds)
