September 11, 2023 - The MS Hamburg is without a doubt Germany's smallest ocean-going cruise ship. On December 4, 2023, MS Hamburg will set off from Santiago de Chile on three spectacular cruises towards Antarctica.

The Bremen operator Plantours Cruises is organizing three spectacular cruises lasting 19, 16 and 29 days. The 144 meter long ship offers a maximum of 400 passengers an appropriate place to stay on the high seas. The shipping company only has the MS Hamburg available for ocean cruises. The company is fundamentally faced with the challenge of finding interesting and exciting routes. And the three routes have it all.

CruiseMapper logo

Scrabster Harbour 's latest cruise ship facilities welcomed their first vessel: MS Hamburg berthed at the redeveloped St. Ola Pier on May 3, 2022.

The ship, operated by Plantours Kreuzfahrten , arrived from Oban (Scotland) with ~300 German passengers onboard and tied up on the brand new 250-metre east berth, part of the GBP 19 million multi-purpose redevelopment works at port Caithness completed in December 2021 .

The cruisers enjoyed a number of shore excursions around Caithness prior to departing for Edinburgh (Scotland) .

Jason Hamilton, Harbour Master at Scrabster Harbour Trust, said it was great to have their first call on the redeveloped pier.

"The additional berthing and quayside facilities are part of our plan to attract and service the cruise industry. We are working hard with local partners to promote Scrabster and our local attractions to the cruise industry.”

port of Scrabster (Scotland)

Scrabster Harbour Trust was founded in 1841. Scrabster is the UK's most northerly mainland commercial port. Scrabster Harbour is an independent Trust Port governed by its own legislation with surpluses reinvested in the port's maintenance/development to ensure it meets the customers' requirements.

Atmosphere aboard of Hamburg

The ship and its crew members welcome the guests in a very familiar and relaxed atmosphere. The ship's size is perfect to get in touch with the fellow travellers. One of the highlights during the holiday is the captain's dinner with formal attire.

For lunch and dinner in the Alsterblick the travellers sit at the same table for the whole cruise. For the dinner there is only one seating. Topics of the lectures can be the different travelled destinations or current themes like politics etc.. For further entertainment there are a library, different shops and activities at the pool deck. The sport and wellness area covers a fitness room, a hair dresser and a sauna. Good to know is that the visit of the sauna is free of charge.

Her relative small size allows her to transit the Great Lakes in North America, where she cruised seasonally between 1997 and 2011 and again in 2022, as well as other cruises worldwide as travelling the Mediterranean for cultural cruises with Martin Randall Travel , the north Atlantic and at Asia . Her crew consists of 170 members, [3] and her top speed is 16 knots . [4] She was previously known as Columbus for Hapag-Lloyd , she was since replaced by Columbus 2 . [5]

In April 2015, the vessel suffered damage due to an oil leak. The following trips were canceled in Tanger . [6]

On 5 May 2015, a fishing net became tangled in the ship's propeller off the South East coast of England. The ship was diverted to Southampton to be inspected.

On 11 May 2015, the ship grounded on charted rocks near the New Rocks buoy in the Sound of Mull, Scotland. The official accident report states that Hamburg's bridge team failed to apply Bridge Team Management tools effectively. [7]

The ship needed to be repaired at a shipyard in Belfast and at Bremerhaven and would be completed by 10 August 2015. To continue operations, Plantours chartered MS Deutschland . [8] [9]

On November 26, 2021, the MS Hamburg arrived in the Port of Buenos Aires coming from Cape Verde . The port was operating under a new, more restrictive, protocol for ships arriving from Africa , due to the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant . However, according to Argentine newspaper Clarín , the Argentine authorities thought Cape Verde was in Asia and not in Africa, and let the ship enter the port without applying the correct protocol. According to the same report, the authorities took 12 hours to realize their mistake. The Argentine authorities, however, denied the mistake, stating that all the passengers in the ship were tested for Covid and that the results returned negative. [10]

Hamburg America Line Former German ocean shipping line (1847–1970)

The Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Aktien-Gesellschaft ( HAPAG ), known in English as the Hamburg America Line , was a transatlantic shipping enterprise established in Hamburg, in 1847. Among those involved in its development were prominent citizens such as Albert Ballin, Adolph Godeffroy, Ferdinand Laeisz, Carl Woermann, August Bolten, and others, and its main financial backers were Berenberg Bank and H. J. Merck & Co. It soon developed into the largest German, and at times the world's largest, shipping company, serving the market created by German immigration to the United States and later, immigration from Eastern Europe. On 1 September 1970, after 123 years of independent existence, HAPAG merged with the Bremen-based North German Lloyd to form Hapag-Lloyd AG.

Norddeutscher Lloyd was a German shipping company. It was founded by Hermann Henrich Meier and Eduard Crüsemann in Bremen on 20 February 1857. It developed into one of the most important German shipping companies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was instrumental in the economic development of Bremen and Bremerhaven. The Hanseatic city raises expectations: Although Hamburg is offering so many fascinating attraction poles, its habitants don’t make a big fuss about it.

Henning Voscherau christened our passenger ship “Hamburg” in 1996. Certainly the former mayor of Hamburg knew at that time already, how it would live up to the city of Hamburg.

The two big lounges of the MS Hamburg convince with simple elegance. Azure coloured panoramic windows present the marvellous view over the Elbe in proper light. Due to its pleasant practicality and an elevated VIP lounge on the upper deck, companies preferentially hold their conventions and conferences here.

Direct access to the big weather deck, two bar areas, the kitchen, a dance floor with starry sky, a stereo system including microphones, spacious cloakrooms plus the sanitary facilities provide an even more comfortable stay, further the ship is barrier-free.

Up to 388 people can be placed on board depending on the seating – this reflects the boat’s classy understatement.

CBP Welcomes the MS Hamburg to the Port of Cleveland

CLEVELAND— U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers welcomed passenger vessel MS Hamburg to the Cleveland port of entry last week. Officers and Agricultural specialists were onsite to provide passengers a secure and streamlined arrival process during their first disembarkment at the port.

CBP Officer Cory McDowell reviews a passport of an international passenger.

“CBP is dedicated to ensuring the safety of US citizens and the safety of the traveling public,” said Cleveland Assistant Area Port Director Eugene Matho. “As more international travelers choose to come through the Cleveland port of entry, we have expanded our air and sea traveler technologies through initiatives such as Trusted Traveler Programs, biometrics, and automated forms collections. Our goal is to create a secure, efficient, and straightforward traveling experience.”

The MS Hamburg, a 170-crew luxury vessel, is currently the largest cruise ship in the Great Lakes. Most of its 420 passengers come from Germany to tour the northern Ohio coastline and enjoy the local culture.

This year two other cruise ships, the Victory I and Victory II from Canada, made entry at Cleveland more than a dozen times. In order to facilitate the increased interest in cruise tourism at this location, the Cleveland Seaport Authority is currently working with CBP to build a cruise ship terminal that will enable shorter wait times and enhanced inspection services in a permanent facility.

CBP conducts operations at ports of entry throughout the United States, and regularly screens arriving international passengers and cargo for narcotics, weapons, and other restricted or prohibited products. CBP strives to serve as the premier law enforcement agency enhancing the nation’s safety, security, and prosperity through collaboration, innovation, and integration.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between official ports of entry. CBP is charged with securing the borders of the United States while enforcing hundreds of laws and facilitating lawful trade and travel.

Visit of the MS Hamburg, January 2024

Report from kelly green. photos: philip kendall, rachel green, caryn green & shannon swain.

The MS Hamburg arrived at Tristan at approximately 8:00hrs on Sunday 21st January 2024. As I walked to work the sun was shining on the famous "Welcome to Tristan" sign. The ladies were setting up the hall for the craft fair. Jane, our chef was busy in the kitchen preparing lots of lobster sandwiches for the 323 passengers on board.

The MS Hamburg close to Calshot Harbour

The MS Hamburg close to Calshot Harbour, from where passengers could observe the settlement.

I made my way down to the harbour to meet Harbourmaster Grant and Assistant Harbourmaster Keith. In no time one of the ships zodiacs was dropped into the water and they came in to check the depth of our harbour, as the ship wanted to use their tenders.

Shortly after, the search and rescue RIB Atlantic Dawn was launched with Inspector Glass and his immigration team. Also joining them was Administrator Philip Kendall and his wife Louise. Philip, alongside Chief Islander James Glass presented the ship's Captain with an island plaque and in return received a lovely bottle of wine. They were also treated to breakfast by the ship's pool.

Everything was looking so positive, and we were all getting very anxious and excited to welcome so many passengers. This was the first cruise ship of 2024 and the first cruise ship in a long time, with over 300 passengers!

The first tender approached Calshot Harbour slowly, at this time the Hamburg had moved further away from the shore. Unfortunately, once the tender was in the harbour they made many attempts to moor it at the quayside steps, but it seemed it was hard to manoeuvre. After they finally succeeded, they made the decision to cancel operations and return to the ship. They felt the jump from the tender to the steps was too dangerous, as they had many elderly people on board. I could see the heartbreak on the passengers' and crews faces' as they were literally within touching distance of the island. At this point, the second tender was already on its way in with another 80 passengers, but they both had to return to the vessel.

Onboard Activities

I offered the next best thing that we could do, which was to send people on board with souvenirs, postcards and stamps. They were very pleased with this option and by 11:30hrs the three sales teams were on board: the Post Office and Tourism Team, Chief Islander James and his daughter from the Rockhopper Gift shop, and three ladies from the Island Store. Atlantic Dawn took us out and by this time the ship was very far away (as you can see in the picture taken by Caryn Green). Once on board we were taken to the lounge, where we set up our displays and selling stalls. The passengers were all so eager to buy and excited to be able to talk to us.

Before the sales commenced, Inspector Conrad Glass did a presentation about Tristan. Once he was finished, we were busy selling at the stalls until 15:30hrs! Passengers went crazy for knitted penguins, toy penguins, postcards and coins. We had to radio back to the island to send a refill of stock.

The day went so fast and the girls worked so hard without any breaks. At 16:00hrs the Atlantic Dawn came to pick us up, and we returned with a lot less then we went with, which was fantastic. Administrator Philip and his wife Louise were at the harbour to welcome us ashore and to say "well done" for our hard work, which is always such a lovely gesture.

Today the girls are busy counting the sales and checking the stock left over. It was such a shame the Captain deemed it unsafe for landing, but at the end of the day the passengers were much happier than they thought they would be in that situation. Both passengers and crew expressed how pleased they were to have been able to meet some people from the island and of course send a postcard from Tristan!.

Departing Visitors

In addition to her tourist activities, the MS Hamburg embarked the three members of the Hugofilm crew, who had been filming on the island since late November. They were Loran Bonnardot, Tobias Nolle and Linus Rieser. We wish our departing visitors and the ship's passengers and crew a fair onward voyage.

Hamburg Cruise Ship Schedule For 2024

Cruise line buys up the mississippi river ships from defunct american queen voyages.

American Cruise Lines has solidified its status as the Mississippi River's — and the country's — busiest river cruise provider with its purchase of all four classic paddlewheeler ships from the now-defunct American Queen Voyages.

Travel Weekly reported that the acquisitions include the 417-passenger mothership American Queen, along with smaller ships American Duchess, American Countess and American Empress. Most of these ships, inspired by 19th-century riverboats, have regularly sailed Mississippi River itineraries, including summer and fall stops in Red Wing and Winona, Minn., and La Crosse, Wis.

American Queen Voyages operated leisure cruises since 2011 on the Mississippi and its tributaries, as well as the Snake and Columbia rivers out West, but owner Hornblower Holdings abruptly shut it down on Feb. 20.

American Cruise Lines did not immediately have details on how the American Queen ships would integrate into its existing fleet of 21 cruise ships in six classes — including four paddlewheelers of its own.

"American Cruise Lines is pleased to be the successful bidder for AQV's river vessels," the company said in a brief statement. "We look forward to announcing additional details after this portion of the Hornblower Holdings bankruptcy process concludes."

We compared and contrasted the ships of American Cruise Lines, American Queen Voyages and a third line on the Mississippi, Viking River Cruises, last summer.
