Although 7.3L Powerstroke Fluid Capacity and specifications are listed here, it’s very important to consult your owner’s manual just to be sure! Also, always use your dipstick to determine when your 7.3 has the correct oil or fluid. Depending on your axle, fluid fill specifications vary. Check the owner’s manual to get the proper fluid fill recommendations. 7.3L Powerstroke Online owner’s manuals and diesel supplements are available for free.

What is the best Oil And Fluid To use on my 7.3L?

To keep your 7.3 running strong, we recommend using OEM fluids for just about everything. There is a little bit of flexibility with engine oil. best oil for a 7.3

what's the best motor oil for a 7.3?

You are trying to start a war here. Actually, the best oil is the one you like, as long as it meets the API and viscosity requirements of your engine. You will find proponents of all the types and brands here on TDS. There is no particular advantage to synthetics, although many of us use it for it's easy starting in the winter.

Shell Rotell 10w40 is a popular choice because it meets Powerstroke specifications,is affordable and has great availability.

ford excursion 7.3 oil type

What montanafan said. Three brands of oil are by far the most popular. Shell Rotella T is probably the most popular. Chevron DELO 400 is probably second place. And Mobil Delvac 1300 Super is probably third. There are lots of other major brands, including Wal-Mart's store brand and Texaco URSA, that are probably just as good, but just not as popular with the big boys driving OTR trucks. I run the Rotella T because I can find it in almost every truckstop in the USA, plus at Wal-Mart and usually at Sam's Club and almost every auto parts store. I like to pick one brand and stick with it, so availability is important to me.

Oil quality is the key. Usually that means "good filtration" which is why a lot of guys have bypass oil filters and send their oil to places like Blackstone for analysis. While I believe barstock synthetics are better by a slight margin, good filtration is more important.

Whatever you are comfortable with and like, and whatever meets Ford recommendations. Can't go wrong if the above are met.

I use the same but 15w-40 with the fl-1995. I use the archoil fuel additive every few fill ups and have the oil additive for my fall oil change. Powerstroke help is offering a free sample of a new archoil fuel additive I ordered ($5 shipping). Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

Here are the Ford recommendations for the 7.3: 15W-40 Acceptable viscosity in ambient temperatures >10 deg F Preferred viscosity for ambient temperatures > 30 deg F 10W-30 Acceptable in ambient temperatures -10 to 90 deg F Preferred viscosity for ambient temperatures -10 to 30 deg F 5W-30 Acceptable viscosity in ambient temperatures < 30 deg F. 0W-30 Acceptable viscosity in ambient temperatures < 0 deg F These old technology engines don't have tight bearing clearances and high pressure like modern engines do, so they don't tolerate light viscosity oils in high ambient temperatures without loss of pressure or protection. It's Summer. It isn't going to be colder than 30F anywhere in the country for the next 6 months. Use 15W/40. It's the recommended viscosity that was used to validate the engine when it was new for use in ambient temperatures above 30F.

Alright so this is probably a stupid question but I believe I am on a roll here with my luck. If a guy used 15w40 for say 300,000kms then switched to 5w40 would it make a difference?

IMHO Nope. If you are in the cold, and judging by the use of km you are, the 5 will help with winter starting. I'm in Savannah Georgia so it rarely gets below 40F so I use 15-40 all year. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

I've had my truck now for at least 5 years, and always use the Motorcraft oil filter (usually available on Amazon for around $10 if you look hard enough) and mostly been running 15w-40 Delo 400. Sometimes the Rotella-T 15w-40 if it's on sale. Changed every 3000 miles or so (+/- 500 miles). When I change my oil, it's dark for sure and probably still fine. I don't have it tested though and just keep changing it. I also change my fuel filter every other oil change, and again use the Motorcraft part (available on Amazon as well, at a better price than the dealer). Living in Nor-Cal, our temps will get down into the 20s in the winter and the summer we'll see 80 and push upwards of 100 at times. Only problem I've had is a blown o-ring on the HPOP; it was 1 year old. Likely a bad o-ring but it was the Ford part. In the winter the truck starts fine, but when I know it's going to be cold I use the block heater plugged into a "thermo cube" that turns on at 35 degrees. Clay

cold weather oil for 7.3 (2001)

ford excursion 7.3 oil type

What kinda temperatures we talking? down to -40 F? If your going to change one glowplug i would just change them all, its a good piece of mind and its a PITA to go in there twice and they are cheap. Only use motorcraft plugs or they tend to mushroom out and you cant get them back through the head.

yeah -40 is not uncommon. I'll probably just change the 1 glowplug for now, not a big deal for me to haul the covers off again. I did get the motorcraft one though. Also got a set of wedges to secure the under valve cover harness, while I'm in there.

Napa might or should sell the Valvoline Extreme Blue 5W-40 synthetic... Most WM stock the RTS 5W-40 synthetic as well as the New T5 10W-30 Semi Synthetic...Strange your local does not! Do U have a local Canadian Tire close? They normally stock a vast brands... M1 TDT 5W-40 comes to mind. If possible? U mind search out a schaeffers dist... This company makes very good robust HDD oils. I also remember a company that has a top notch oil... that I've read other canadian members talking about... It was called Petro-Canada lubricants.

Walmart here is like a stripped down version. It's hit or miss at best. No Canadian Tire close, no Petro Canada here either. Although when I worked at the dealership we used PetroCanada 0w30 in the winter. I will check to see if they can still get it. Napa seems to be the best bet, I'll check next week. There is a Schaeffer's oil distributer here, but it only gets stock once a month. I got transmission oil there for my BTS trans, but it took like 6 weeks to get it.

taterthedog said: What are a couple good oils to look out for? Click to expand...

I switch to rotella syn. 5 -40 in the winter from 15 -40 in the summer. It does help but it's no miracle oil.I'd make sure all your supporting mechanical parts are in good order: i:e - batteries, relay, all glow plugs ect. -40 sitting for a couple days isn't easy on these trucks. I've had to throw a diesel space heater under mine for awhile to get it to fire after a wknd of -20.

Depending on if you are looking to go Synthetics or not Amsoil has a 5W-30 HDD and of course the 5W-40. I have several customers in Canada that run the 5W-30 and swear by it for cold winters but run it all year long as well.

For taterthedog and anybody else doing research for their oils here is some good reading: Performance Tests Many of these relate directly to our trucks such as the Shear Stability Test for gear lubes. This test compares some of the top names in synthetics with a 75W-140 Gear oil. That should pertain to most of us with Super Duty Trucks as that is the weight oil recomended for the rear end. Mercon V Test which is the trans fluid most of us would be using in the automatic trans with the F250-F550 For you 7.3L guys the Synthetic Oil filter comparison is worth the read. Trucking Company in Minn runs test on Amsoil HDD 5W-30 oil in their fleet I provoide this for your research, information and fact finding missions. Make informed decisions for yourself and don't take my word as the gospel. Amsoil is not for everybody and I know that but it can help many of us save money on maintenence without sacrificing anything to wear, shearing and stability. Amsoil spends more money on testing than any other synthetic oil provider. Most of these tests were funded by Amsoil and are performed in independent labs. Atleast Amsoil is spending money on the testing, you will not find other big companies spending money on testing at all just marketing such as RP & Lucas.

Checked Napa, not much there. They can get Esso xd-3 0w40. What about the Motorcraft 0w30 or 0w40, Anyone use it?

Esso is produced my ExxonMobil Corporation=Very good robust oil... I'm sure it's not cheap... ESSO XD-3* EXTRA is Imperial Oil's best universal heavy duty diesel engine oil. It is a premium performance product formulated for severe diesel and gasoline engine service. I'm not too familiar with the MC 0W-30 or 40..I'll bet my next paycheck they are both very good oils..And will protect your investment well... If those where my 2 choices? If I had a thick wallet? I would chose the Esso. If it was to expensive? I wouldn't hesitate to pour in the MC. If your not going to be doing any really heavy towing? I would pour in the 0W-30... Our 7.3L really seem to like the lighter viscosity oil... U can use either and judge for yourself... My only true bit of advice is---->Don't skimp in cheap filters... Use either M1-MC-Baldwin-Fleetguard-Wix-Amsoil-Purolator. I have had my best UOAs when I ran the Amsoil oil filter. Not saying they are the best... They seem to really work well with my 7.3L... Everyone's 7.3L is different.

any synthetic would be better than nothing. My 7.3 hated the cold here in MN and it definately ran better w/ the synthetich rotella 0-40 versus the 15-40.

I put the motorcraft 0w30 in tonight with a motorcraft oil filter and a motorcraft fuel filter. Hopefully it'll be good for the winter now. Also put in a motorcraft heater motor, also good for winter. lol. Thanks for all the advice!

The important thing to know about oil in a powerstroke is that the oil is used as a hydraulic fluid to pop the injectors.
