International Greeter Association

Adelaide Greeters ‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎ Free Private Walking Tour with a local

Adelaide

Book a free private walk in Adelaide with a Greeter.

Meet a local volunteer

Our core value #1   reads "Greeters are volunteers, a friendly face for those visiting a city."

It's true: our Greeters love their city or town and they are proud to share this with guests.

How could you better discover the most interesting spots of a place?

Mini group, maximum six people

Our core value #2 reads "Greeters welcome individuals and may serve small groups of up to six people."

The reason is that each Greet should be an opportunity to talk to each other and that seems impossible in bigger groups.

Also important: we do not mingle people from different requests but serve only you (and your friends).

Free service, no tipping

Our core value #3 reads "Meeting a Greeter is free of charge."

We do not follow a "give what you think is ok (but please give)" strategy. Greeters honestly do not like any tipping because what they give comes from their heart not because of any tipping expectation.

If you feel you would like to support the Greeters as a whole you should find a way to support the local Greeter organization (our our association) to keep the project running.

The best free things to do in Adelaide

free walking tours adelaide

Found yourself in Adelaide with limited funds? Not to worry – there’s plenty to see and do here that won’t cost you a cent. In fact, the city’s gratis offerings make a terrific introduction to local life and the surrounding scenery. Not to mention the fantastic climate – which the locals love to call ‘Mediterranean’ – well, that comes for free too.

From beautiful views and beach days, to guided walking tours and incredible art collections, the city has an abundance to offer in exchange for just your time and energy!

Features - Lightning over Adelaide.

Free-wheeling ain’t stealing

First thing’s first, the best way to get the lay of the land is to hop on the bus. Adelaide has two free ‘city loop’ bus services , in effect providing a scenic tour of the city centre and surroundings for diddly-squat! The buses weave through the city in opposite directions and are as frequent as every 30 minutes. Get on board!

Another option for getting around town is the ‘Adelaide Free Bikes’ system run by Bicycle SA . Just bring a form of photo ID as your deposit in exchange for a rental bike – complete with helmet, lock and maps – and pedal around this big, smooth city. There are several pick-up hubs around town, the only catch being you must return the bike to the same location you borrowed it from. But hey, it’s free!

Freedom on foot

For a more tailored tour experience, check out the Adelaide City Council’s free downloadable Adelaide City Explorer self-guided walking tours. There are 19 themed trails available, zeroing-in on subjects like historic pubs, flora and fauna, art-deco architecture and public art.

For a loftier perspective of the Adelaide landscape – a vast urban plain hugged by the croissant-shaped Adelaide Hills – take a drive (or catch the bus) up to Mt Lofty Summit . The highest point in the hills that guard the city, this is a top spot to pick out Adelaide’s landmarks and gaze wistfully towards the horizon at Gulf St Vincent.

Features - shutterstock_109519769-0e598ed91a5b

A fabulous walking trail kicks off from the lookout, tracking 3.9km downhill to the aptly named Waterfall Gully. It’s a steep but very well maintained bush track. There are a series of waterfalls along the route, but the biggest and best is First Falls at the bottom of the trail, which is extremely photogenic post rain shower.

Art and historical offerings

North Terrace, the broad avenue running across the northern edge of Adelaide’s CBD, plays host to two of the city’s estimable cultural bastions: the South Australian Museum and the Art Gallery of South Australia . Special and touring exhibitions incur admission fees, but unless you stop for coffee or lunch at one of the cafés (highly recommended), your visit will be free. Spending a few hours in each is the perfect way to beat the heat of the city streets.

South Australian Museum highlights include the mesmerising Australian Aboriginal Cultures galleries, which give focus to South Australian indigenous artefacts and heritage. Don’t miss the incredible archival film footage showcased throughout the exhibitions. There’s also the eye-popping Pacific Cultures Gallery, with its dazzling collection of masks, weapons, and traditional costumes from tribal groups across the region. Kids gravitate towards the impressive World Mammals display, with all and sundry hairy beasts safely imprisoned behind glass.

Features - Art Gallery of South Australia

Right next door, the Art Gallery of South Australia has recently been transformed from a somewhat staid, old operator into something far more edgy. It’s a long way from matching Hobart’s MONA in the shock-and-awe stakes, but the vibe here these days is progressive and hip. The Australian Collection lures art buffs, with plenty of famous names – like Smart, McCubbin, Nolan, Whiteley and Tucker – to ogle in hushed parquetry-floored spaces.

Urban green space

An anomaly of Australian urban development, Adelaide was a planned city, laid out in a sensible, organised fashion in the 1830s by master planner, Colonel William Light. Part of Light’s grand scheme was a band of green belts encircling the centre – think New York’s Central Park, only in reverse. The park lands have survived the decades, offering space to enjoy the summer heat and more playgrounds, sports ovals and picnic spots than you could possibly investigate in one visit.

Features - Statue of Colonel William Light

One park land gem is the free Adelaide Botanic Gardens – check out the giant waterlily pavilion and the seed-filled Museum of Economic Botany. Roam a little further and you’ll find the spooky-but-fascinating West Terrace Cemetery , the final resting place for more than a few nefarious types. Or, just pull up a sunny patch of grass by the River Torrens near the Adelaide Festival Centre. Try to score a spot alongside the statue of Colonel William Light himself on Montefiore Hill, enjoy a picnic and count the ducks/joggers.

The Botanic Gardens provide hours of fascination and awe

Life’s a beach

For a fun, laidback budget experience, ride the tram to Glenelg – home to Adelaide’s most popular beach, aka ‘the Bay’ – and splash around in the sea. In fact, Adelaide has a superb string of golden-sand beaches fronting onto Gulf St Vincent that manage to fly under the radar because, unlike those in Sydney, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, there’s no surf. Appealingly though, the west-facing coast snares the afternoon sun, setting the scene for refreshing evening drinks and fish and chips on the sand. Glenelg also has a lengthy pier – perfect for an evening promenade before or after the aforementioned drink.

Features - Glenelg town hall.

Before the sun sets, check out the free displays at the Bay Discovery Centre , including some amazing bits and pieces dredged up from the sea bed when the new pier replaced the old one (seemingly a handy spot to dispose of suspicious pistols).

Tour Tickets (may vary by date)

Frequently asked questions.

Who comes on the tours?

Many people assume that only backpackers come on free walking tours. This is not the case. These tours are for everyone no matter how you travel, where you are from, how old your are, what type of budget you have etc.

Who runs the tours?

Tours Around Adelaide is run by Ryan, a local from Adelaide. Ryan manages the business whilst also tour guiding. Tours Around Adelaide also contracts freelance tour guides for the free walking tours and employs some of Adelaide's best tour guides for the paid walking tours. We are a small team dedicated to providing some of the best tours in Adelaide. Learn more about us here.

Why are there limited spaces for the free walking tours?

The main reason for limiting the spaces for the free walking tours is to ensure enjoyment for both participants and guides. If you are coming on a free walking tour of Adelaide, chances are that you have been on another free walking tour somewhere else in the world. As you may have seen, many other tours have group sizes of 35+ people as it is hard to determine how many people will come on any given day. By limiting the spaces and requiring everyone to book in, we can make sure that there is a good guide to participant ratio so everyone can hear and have a good time.

What should I wear/bring on the tours?

We recommend wearing comfortable footwear, appropriate for a 4km walk in the city. We also recommend bringing things appropriate to the weather i.e. A hat, sunscreen, long sleeve shirt and sunglasses when its hot and sunny and rain jackets or umbrellas when it is rainy. It is also a good idea to bring a water bottle.

How long are the tours?

The Free Walking Tours run for about 2.5 hours, the Street Art Tours for 2 hours.

Are tours ever cancelled?

Some walking tours run "rain, hail or shine". We, however, do cancel when there is bad weather. Safety is our number one priority and weather conditions can jeopardise the safety of both participants and guides. The tours are cancelled if: - The weather is forecast to be 40 degrees or more - It is forecast for thunder and lightening storms - It is going to hail - There will be extremely strong winds and/or rain - Any other reason deemed appropriate by the tour guide/management Tours Around Adelaide will check the Bureau of Meteorology regularly and advise all participants who are booked in if a tour is cancelled. Cancellations may happen up to an hour before the scheduled start of the tour.

How will I identify the guide at the meeting point?

The guide will be holding a Blue umbrella.

Are tours offered on public holidays?

Only some tours are run on some public holidays. Go to book a tour and check if your desired date is available. If it is not, then unfortunately the tours won't run on that day. Some tours only allow participants to register 2 months in advance. If want to check if a tour is running more than two months in the future, please email [email protected]

What is a free tour and how is it free?

Free walking tours started in Berlin in 2005 when a man called Chris Sandeman, an out of work tour guide, needed to make money. Instead of charging people up front for his tours, he invited them to come along for free and only pay what they thought the tour was worth at the end of the tour. Free tours now operate in over 100 cities in the world and is the tour of choice for many different types of travellers.

Are there minimum and maximum number of people allowed on the tours?

Firstly, there are no minimums for any of our tours. We do however have maximums. For the paid walking tours, we have maximums of 15 for each tour. For the free walking tours, we try our best to keep tours under 25 people. In rare cases, there will be more on the tours due to tour guide availability, unforeseen circumstances etc.

What will I see on the free walking tours?

As each tour guide will have their own individual tour that they run, we cannot tell you exactly what you will see, as a general guide, please check the 'highlights' part on the free walking tour page. We can tell you that you will see the best part of Adelaide on our tours.

The Best Free Things To Do in Adelaide

Adelaide has many attractions, including those that are free

From beaches to cultural excursions, check out these awesome free things to do in Adelaide .

Adelaide is a small coastal city located in South Austalia. While its more popular counterparts often overshadow it, there are plenty of things to do in this ‘big country town’, and plenty of good reasons to visit – especially if you happen to be a budget traveller. From beach lounging to museum hopping, here’s a guide to the best free things to do in the South Australia n capital.

Visit the city’s best beaches

Glenelg Beach is easily accessible from the city centre

Make the most of Adelaide ’s stunning coastline by checking out one of its beautiful beaches. Glenelg is the city’s most popular metropolitan beach. It has a beachfront path, jetty, as well as boutiques and restaurants close by. You can easily get to Glenelg via a tram from the city centre. Other options include Henley Beach, Christies Beach and Brighton Beach; the sheltered bay of Port Elliot; and Semaphore, which is known for its dunes and surrounding Art Deco buildings.

More than 400,000 people visit Rundle Mall every week. Home to 1,000 retailers, you don’t need to spend money to enjoy the mall, as it’s home to some very fascinating landmarks and sculptures. Highlights include The Mall’s Balls , A Day Out – which features four bronze pigs, including one rummaging in a rubbish bin – Beehive Corner’s Gothic Revival-style architecture, The Rundle Lantern and the Adelaide and Gays Arcades, both built in 1885.

Walk through Adelaide Botanic Garden

free walking tours adelaide

Amazingly, 45 percent of Adelaide ’s city centre consists of parkland. Adelaide Botanic Garden is the biggest park of them all. Take a walk and check out some of the impressive gardens, including the Garden of Health, the International Rose Garden and the Australia n Native Garden. Architecture buffs will also enjoy the Palm House. Built in 1877, it’s one of the last of its kind and houses a Madagascan plant collection.

Bike from the beach to the hills

You can cycle the trail that follows the River Torrens to its mouth at West Beach or Henley Beach

The River Torrens Linear Park Trail is a 46.5-kilometre (29-mile) path that starts at Athelstone at the bottom of the Adelaide Hills and finishes between West Beach and Henley Beach. Over 30km (19mi) of the trail follows the River Torrens through the Adelaide central business district (CBD) to its mouth at West Beach or Henley Beach. Completing the entire route is a full day’s bike ride, but you can easily shorten it and cycle from the CBD to the coast instead.

Visit the South Australian Museum

free walking tours adelaide

One of Australia ’s most visited cultural institutions, the South Australia n Museum is a great free Adelaide attraction. Over 150 years old, it houses the world’s most extensive Aboriginal artefact collection , with over 30,000 items. Past exhibitions have included Desert Colour and its focus on Aboriginal art, and Picasso: The Vollard Suite , which is his most celebrated etching series.

Jump on a free bike or free bus

You can see Adelaide for free via a rental bike or City Connector bus service

For a deposit that includes either your passport or driver’s licence, you can hire a free bike from several locations. The only catch is that you have to return the bike to the same place. Adelaide also has a free City Connector bus service, which runs on an inner-city loop and an extended loop around North Adelaide . It conveniently provides a link to the city’s main tourist attractions, as well as its premier shopping and dining destinations.

Devour Adelaide Central Market

free walking tours adelaide

Established in 1869, Adelaide Central Market welcomes over 9 million people annually. It has more than 70 traders selling everything from fresh produce and health foods to cheese and bakery staples. The market is also home to some of the city’s most popular cafés and eateries, including Big Table – a favourite for over 20 years. As one of the southern hemisphere’s largest undercover food markets, it’s a great place to spend a rainy Adelaide morning.

Admire the Bradman Collection

Sir Donald Bradman is considered the greatest batsman in cricket history. Located in a purpose-built museum in the Riverbank Stand at Adelaide Oval, the Bradman Collection is a free exhibition that includes his personal collection of cricket memorabilia. Spanning 50 years from 1927 to 1977, items on display include trophies, clothing and his trusty cricket bat. You can also watch Bradman footage in a theatre and test your skills in an interactive display.

Have a different museum experience at MOD.

free walking tours adelaide

Located at the University of South Australia , MOD. is “ Australia ’s leading future-focussed museum, provoking new ideas at the intersection of science, art and innovation”. The museum has seven purpose-built galleries over two floors. One of its permanent exhibitions is the country’s first Science on a Sphere, which shows planetary data on a central sphere that’s surrounded by touchscreens. It’s Adelaide ’s answer to Hobart’s MONA.

Do a self-guided walking tour of Port Adelaide

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield has created several self-guided walking tour brochures, which you can download from its website or pick up at the local Visitor Information Centre. There’s a heritage walking tour that takes in the suburb’s many historical buildings, while the Port Adelaide Dolphin Trail brochure highlights where you can spot dolphins in the area.
