Golden is one of the best hiking destinations in the Front Range , and with its proximity to Denver, it’s an easy way to get out of the city and into the mountain air! Most of the hiking trails are also mountain bike and pet friendly. There are plenty of easy trails, most of which are at lower levels of elevation (for Colorado anyway!), so hiking is a great thing to do in Golden before you hiking at higher altitudes to help you get acclimated!

Our favorite place to hike in Golden is Golden Gate Canyon State Park . This park has several hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty, from super chill hikes suitable for young children, as well as more moderate-to-difficult options. We particularly like the Raccoon Trail and the Blue Grouse Trail to John Frazer Cabin .

Pro Tip: Visit Golden Gate Canyon State Park in the fall to see the aspens turn their magical yellow hue!

Lookout Mountain Park and North Table Mountain Park are also great places to hike in Golden and are close to downtown. If you’re looking for more alpine and snow-capped mountain views, you should go to Lookout Mountain . If you’re short on time, head to North Table Mountain for views of the surrounding foothills, and, on a clear day, the Denver skyline.

You’re probably catching on that Clear Creek is one of the best outdoor adventure spots in Golden! Unlike tubing or whitewater rafting, however, fly fishing in Clear Creek requires patience and a desire to slow down and experience nature’s calm.

The Coors Brewery Tour is a must-visit destination for beer lovers and anyone interested in the history and science of brewing. The brewery tour takes visitors on a journey through the entire brewing process, from the raw ingredients to the finished product.

This was one of the first activities Tim and I did in Golden. We had a great guide who was enthuasiastic and told us all about the history of the Coors family and the evolution of their beers. A highlight of the tour for us was visiting the brewhouse with its massive vats and machinery . The tour also includes plenty of samples , and we even got to keep the souvenir aluminum cups they served us with!

9. Visit the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave is one of the best things to do in Golden, Colorado to learn about the life of one of America’s most famous cowboys. The museum features exhibits about Buffalo Bill’s life and legacy, as well as a beautiful view of the mountains.

Located on Lookout Moutain , the Buffal Bill Museum features a variety of exhibits and displays that showcase Buffalo Bill’s life and achievements, as well as the history of the American West. Visitors can explore artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia from Buffalo Bill’s life, including his Wild West Show , which traveled across the United States and Europe, entertaining millions of people and shaping the world’s perception of the American West.

We also really enjoyed the short film that summarizes Buffalo Bill’s life and impact. It helped put the artifacts into context!

Tip: While on Lookout Mountain, don’t miss the Boettcher Mansion . This historic mansion was built in 1917 and features beautiful architecture amidst mountain views.

During the festival weekend, local businesses offer special pet-friendly packages, so if you travel with your pup and plan to visit Golden in February, be sure to check it out!

14. Dine in a Yurt at Sherpa House

The Sherpa House Restaurant is a unique and authentic Nepalese and Tibetan restaurant owned and operated by a Nepalese family who bring their cultural heritage and culinary expertise to the menu.

The atmosphere at Sherpa House is warm and inviting, with traditional Nepalese decor and cozy seating. The menu features a variety of dishes that are inspired by the Himalayan region, including popular Nepalese and Tibetan dishes such as momos, curries, thukpa, and tandoori . There aren’t many options for South Asian cuisine in Golden, but thankfully Sherpa House overdelivers with a unique and authentic atmosphere and delicious food!

Tip: Ask if there is any available seating in the yurt for a unique dining experience at the Sherpa House!

15. Grab a slice at Woody’s Wood-Fired Pizza

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza is a popular wood-fired pizzeria located in downtown Golden, Colorado. This locally owned and operated restaurant is known for its delicious, authentic Neapolitan-style pizza and its warm and inviting atmosphere. It’s a local favorite , so get here early on weekends if you want to dine in! Otherwise, we recommend picking up a pizza to go and enjoying a picnic in one of Golden’s parks or along the Clear Creek.

16. Enjoy a fancy coffee at Windy Saddle Cafe

The Windy Saddle Cafe is a cozy and welcoming cafe downtown that offers a range of delicious breakfast and lunch options. What won me over, however, were the fun and unique coffee and espresso drinks they serve. My personal favorite is the Gold Digger , inspired by Golden’s mining history and made with espresso, caramel, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and milk. It’s dessert for breakfast with a dose of caffeine!

The food menu at Windy Saddle Cafe features a variety of breakfast burritos , breakfast sandwiches , and quiches . Additionally, there is a bakery case that offers a range of fresh-baked goods such as muffins , scones , and pastries .

17. Get a Flight or a Growler at Barrels and Bottles Brewery

Barrels and Bottles Brewery is a charming craft brewery that offers a rotating selection of craft beers, as well as a selection of wine, making it a great spot for beer enthusiasts and non-beer drinkers alike.

Visitors can enjoy their beer flights and pints while sitting at the bar, at a table, or on the outdoor patio.

One unique aspect of Barrels and Bottles Brewery is their “Bottle Shop,” which offers growlers of craft beers and bottles of wines for purchase to take home. This is a great way to try some of their delicious brews at home or to bring a gift for a beer-loving friend!

18. Eat and Drink at Golden Mill

One of our favorite food and drink experiences in Golden is the Golden Mill . This fun and innovative food hall doubles as a serve-yourself brewery . When you arrive to Golden Mill, you put your credit card on file and they issue you a card to swipe at the food stalls and drink taps inside. It’s the easiest and most fun way to enjoy a variety of beers and sample food from several vendors. If you want pizza AND barbecue, you can have it at Golden Mill.

Overall, it’s a fun, laid-back, and social place to hang out and enjoy a few drinks and some bites. We especially love it in summer when you can sit on the patio and enjoy the views of Table Mountain.

19. Go to a concert at Red Rocks – or even a hike

Red Rocks Amphitheatre, in Morrison, Colorado, just a short drive from Golden, is one of the most iconic music venues in the world, known for its stunning natural beauty and unparalleled acoustics. The amphitheatre is surrounded by stunning red rock formations that provide a breathtaking backdrop for concerts and events.

Red Rocks has been hosting concerts and events for over a century, and it has become an iconic destination for music lovers from around the world. Legendary musicians have performed at Red Rocks over the years, including The Beatles, U2, and The Grateful Dead.

20. Brunch at Cafe 13

Cafe 13 is my favorite brunch spot in Golden . It’s also my favorite coffee shop to work from when I feel like a change of scenery from my home office! The cafe specializes in serving up delicious breakfast and lunch dishes, along with freshly brewed coffee and tea. I usually order their loaded avocado toast with a cappucino .

In the summer, a coveted spot on the outdoor patio at Cafe 13 is the perfect way to start the day. But, if you can’t linger, you can grab and go as well!

Tip: Colorado is famous for its green chilli , and Cafe 13 makes their own in-house. Enjoy!

21. Golden History Museum and Park

If you’re a history buff , you won’t want to miss the free Golden History Museum , located in downtown Golden. The museum features dynamic displays that showcase the city’s collection of 15,000 historic objects, as well as versatile programming spaces and a hands-on gallery for families with young children. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m .

Near the museum and affiliated with it, you can step back in time and experience life as a homesteader at Golden History Park , formerly known as Clear Creek History Park . This historic site features original buildings from the Pearce Ranch , one of the largest ranches in the area in 1912. Stroll through the park and peek into real 1800s cabins, as well as other buildings from the ranch, including a barn, chicken coop, and two-seat outhouse. You can also visit the 1876 Guy Hill schoolhouse, which was moved to Golden in 1976. Admission is free, and the grounds are open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m . Check out the events schedule to see when the buildings are open for visitors, and be sure to chat with the friendly volunteers who serve as interpreters within the historic structures. The park is located at 11th & Arapahoe.

23. See a Moon Rock at the Free Mines Museum

The Mines Museum , also known as the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum , is a fascinating destination for anyone interested in geology, mining, and mineralogy.

The museum features a wide range of exhibits that showcase the history of mining and geolog y in Colorado and beyond. Visitors can explore interactive displays that demonstrate the process of mining and mineral extraction, as well as learn about the different types of minerals found in the region.

In 1974, Nixon gifted each state and 160 countries with two “Goodwill” moon rocks from the Apollo 17 mission. One of Colorado’s moon rocks has been on display at the State Capitol, and the other was thought to be lost until 2010. Now it’s one of the most interesting pieces on display at the Mines Museum.

This is a particularly great activity to combine with Dinosaur Ridge , since the two attractions are nearby to one another and align with a similar interest in paleontology and geology!

The Foothills Art Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating the arts. 26. Drive the Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway

The Lariat Loop is a 40-mile Colorado Scenic & Historic Byway that combines several smaller roads, including Denver’s Mountain Park system, to offer breathtaking views of the Front Range. The Loop starts in downtown Golden, where you can grab a coffee or picnic to go and begin your drive up Lookout Mountain, a 4.3-mile road that climbs 1,300 feet with drop-offs and viewpoints.

The road continues to the 7,379-foot summit of Lookout Mountain . The loop then heads to Genesee Mountain Park and the buffalo overlook, where you can see Denver’s herd of 40 buffalo and enjoy a snowcapped mountain panorama. 27. Bike the Clear Creek Trail

The Clear Creek Trail is one of the most beloved paved bike paths in the Denver metropolitan area and one of the best things to do in Golden! The trail spans 19 miles alongside the beautiful Clear Creek, starting in Clear Creek Canyon and ending at the South Platte River where it meets with another 40-mile paved bike trail. The route is shaded with trees for almost its entire length, offering a peaceful and scenic experience with the relaxing sound of rushing water.

As you ride along, you will be immersed in the history of the region, where the big gold strikes of Central City and Black Hawk were discovered in the mountains. The trail also passes by the Coors Brewery and the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Are you unsure of the best time to visit Golden, Colorado? To be honest, Golden is an awesome destination year-round. And I’m not just saying that because we live there!

The spring months in Golden offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds, making it the perfect time to explore the great outdoors without the summer heat. You can go hiking, and biking, and enjoy several other outdoor activities. However, the weather can be unpredictable, with occasional snowstorms and rain, and some tourist attractions may not be open until late spring.

Summer in Golden brings warm weather, long days, and plenty of outdoor activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking. The town also hosts several outdoor concerts and festivals. However, it can get crowded, with long wait times and lines at popular attractions, and temperatures can become quite hot.

Fall is undoubtedly the best time to visit Golden. You can enjoy mild and comfortable weather and the stunning fall foliage for which Golden is famous.

The winter months offer beautiful snow-covered landscapes, skiing and snowboarding opportunities at nearby resorts, and fewer crowds. However, some attractions may have reduced hours or be closed altogether, and the weather can be cold and unpredictable. It’s important to be prepared for snow and ice on the roads, especially if you plan on driving in the mountains.

What to Pack for Golden, Colorado

Assuming you’ll be doing some outdoorsy activities like hiking on your visit to Golden, Colorado, here are some items we recommend packing.

• Day Pack:  It’s so helpful to have a good day pack to carry everything you need. I’ve had the  Osprey Skimmer 20 for Women  for years and it’s held up on every adventure! And here’s the  Osprey Talon 22 Pack for Men !
• Water Reservoir:  If your day pack doesn’t have a water reservoir in it already, you can buy one separately to slip into your bag. It’s absolutely NECESSARY that you bring water with you on every hike. Here are our favorite  2-liter reservoir  and  3-liter reservoir !
• Sun Protection:  This is so important year-round – even more so in winter when the snow can reflect the sun back up to your skin, multiplying your exposure!  Sun Bum  is our favorite  sunscreen  brand.
• Hiking Boots : I always hike in my  Columbia hiking boots . I literally have these in multiple colors because I love them so much! You can’t beat the price for the quality, too. Tim always hikes in his  Foxelli boots .
• Socks : I started wearing these double-layer  Wrightsock  brand socks when marathon training years ago and have never gotten a blister with them! In winter, I might mix it up with  merino wool socks , too.
• Sunglasses : I love these  wooden frame sunglasses , so they are my go-to.
• Hiking pants : These  hiking leggings  are my favorite in winter. In summer, I usually hike in  biker shorts  or leggings.
• Moisture-wicking layers : I wear this  pullover  all the time (it went around the world with us in 2014 and is still in great condition) and their  wool t-shirts  are great base layers. There are also  SmartWool t-shirts for men !
• Jacket : I always pack my  Columbia jacket  when hiking in the mountains.
• First Aid Kit : An  ultralight first aid kit  is a must-have for every hike. You never know what can happen, and you’ll be glad to have a  first aid kit  if you need one!
• Camera : I always hike with my  Sony a7iii . It’s a great full-frame camera for capturing all of our hiking memories!
• Snacks :  Clif Energy Bars  are our favorite hiking snack. It’s got the perfect mix of carbs, fats, and protein to power us through our hikes!
• Trekking poles : Many people like hiking with trekking poles to reduce the impact on the knees, especially going downhill. These  Black Diamond Trail Back hiking poles  are really popular!
• If you’re hiking Golden in winter, you’ll want to bring a pair of  microspikes  and/or  snowshoes  with you. These will slide over your boots and keep you from slipping on icy portions of the trail. Trust us, you’ll be able to enjoy your hike so much more if you aren’t worried about falling on the ice or snow!

There are more than 100 automobiles on display; they’ve all been restored to near original condition and include brands that haven’t been in production for decades.

The museum is located on West 69th Avenue in nearby Arvada, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site before heading off to their next adventure.

12. Indian Tree Golf Club

With its dramatic changes in elevation and stunning scenery, Colorado offers golfers a unique experience that they won’t find elsewhere.

Also in Arvada, Indian Tree Golf Club is an 18-hole championship level course that plays more than 7,000 yards from the long tees, making it significantly longer than many of its contemporaries.

For those who’d rather not spend four or five hours on the links, there’s a 9-hole, par-3 option that plays just 1,100 yards.

The club’s amenities include a driving range, practice putting and chipping areas, a fully stocked pro shop, and a restaurant that’s open year-round – even when the course is buttoned up for winter.

13. Wings over the Rockies Air & Space Museum

For aviation aficionados visiting the Golden area, there’s no better place to spend a morning or afternoon than Wings over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.

The museum’s impressive collection of military and commercial aircraft is housed in a vast hangar that encompasses nearly 200,000 square feet and includes restored examples from almost every era in aviation history.

For those traveling with kids, there are a variety of interactive exhibits that are both engaging and educational. The docents that lead the guided tours are knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

Don’t forget to swing by the gift shop to pick up a keepsake or two before heading out.

14. The Arvada Center for the Arts & Humanities

The Arvada Center for the Arts & Humanities is an expansive arts and entertainment venue that includes museums, galleries, theaters, and classrooms, which offer a variety of instructional and educational programs to the community.

The center has been around since the mid-‘70s and is located on Wadsworth Boulevard in Arvada, just a short drive from Golden.

Their year-round schedule includes dramatic theater, recitals, contemporary and classical music, and a variety of art shows and special events.

Their seasonal holiday performances are perennial favorites, and not surprisingly, tickets tend to go quickly, so consider buying yours before making a special trip.

15. Denver Botanic Gardens

The Denver Botanic Gardens are located just a stone’s throw from downtown Denver and are comprised of distinctly themed cultivated areas spread over more than 20 beautiful acres.

The gardens’ amenities include a conservatory, visitor center, and an amphitheater that features a popular summer concert series.

Due to the garden’s size, it can be a walking-intensive attraction, but the paths are paved and accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.

There are also two restaurants on-site that are the perfect places to fill your tank and relax after a long day on your feet.

Picnics are also okay for those who prefer to dine in nature.

24 Hours in Golden, Colorado: Ultimate Travel Guide. Nestled in the Rocky Mountain foothills Golden, Colorado is bursting with a vibrant culinary scene, boutique hotels and six craft breweries. I’ll show you what do, what eat, and where to stay! 

A couple of weeks ago, Mr. B, Juniper and I headed west to nearby Golden, Colorado for a quick stay-cation getaway. 

Golden, Colorado is only a 20-minute drive west of Denver that makes for an easy escape from big city life. Golden is Denver’s closet mountain town. Nestled right in the foothills, this charming city has so much to offer: hiking and biking trails, rock climbing, fly fishing, kayaking, shops, galleries, restaurants, and more! 

The day we arrived, the weather in Golden was heavenly. Seventy degrees, sunny and not a cloud in the sky. Our sanctuary for the night was The Golden Hotel . The Golden Hotel’s location is something to marvel at; it’s located in the heart of downtown and right next to the Clear Creek River.  This stunning hotel was the perfect oasis.

 In addition, the hotel offers spacious rooms, beautiful views and is dog friendly! This was a big plus for our family. Juniper loved the hotel and made herself right at home. Plus, the hotel staff was so friendly and accommodating. Juniper got treats wherever she went! 

Once we got settled, we decided to take advantage of the spring-like weather and stroll around downtown. I definitely recommend walking along the bridge (near the hotel)  and then splashing in the river. There is an easy access to the river thanks to the river walk. Juniper could not get enough. Don’t the mountains look good on her? 

After our nature stroll, we walked around downtown to check out some locally owned shops. You can’t miss downtown Golden because of the iconic welcome arch that spans the city’s main street. We stopped into a few galleries and antique shops while out and about. 

All the walking around had us working up quite the appetite. We decided to stop in at the Old Capitol Grill & Smokehouse . Fun fact: this is where the very first state legislature met. Golden was the original capital of the Colorado Territory before Denver. 

We decided to sit outside on the patio with the weather being so nice and dogs were allowed! Another Juniper win. Mr. B and I ordered some Jamaican jerk wings that packed a punch, a burger for the lady and some barbecue for the gent. All the food was delicious! 

We took our time to head back to the hotel and hunker in for the night. The next morning we didn’t have to venture far for breakfast. The Bridgewater Grill is located right downstairs and man is there food off the charts. For starters, I ordered a homemade granola parfait that hit the spot – so fresh and flavorful.

But! The piece-de-resistance on the menu was the Colorado Breakfast Burrito smothered with their award-wining pork green chili. It’s some of the best pork green chili I’ve ever had.

Golden, Colorado

The Wild West is still alive in Golden,   Colorado's territorial capital until 1867. Upon arriving in Golden, you are welcomed with an old-fashioned wooden arch over Washington Street reading: "Howdy Folks! Welcome to Golden!"

Today, it's home to six museums;  Coors Brewery , one of the largest brewing facilities in the world; and a downtown filled with shops and restaurants.

The famed  Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre  is just up the road. If you're looking for outdoor adventure, Golden is also home to miles of hiking trails for all levels, some stellar rock climbing and Clear Creek, which runs through the center of town and offers whitewater rafting and excellent fishing.

With its secluded, small-town feel and plenty to see and do, Golden is a great day trip option from Denver.

Explore Golden, Colorado

Museums & historical sites.

Spend the day exploring Golden's fantastic museums, such as the  Colorado Railroad Museum , which has the state's largest collection of locomotives, cars, photos and historic railroad mementos; the  Golden History Museum & Park , where you can learn about the legends who built the town, see old cabins and a one-room schoolhouse, and feed the heirloom chickens; the  Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum , where you can see a universe of quilts from antique to artistic along with special exhibits; and the American  Mountaineering Museum , where you can walk in the footsteps of famous climbers from Colorado's 14ers to Mount Everest through interactive exhibits and high-tech displays. 

Or take a short jaunt up Lookout Mountain to visit the  Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave  and snap a stunning panorama of the Front Range. You can have a bite to eat at the café in the  Buffalo Bill's Pahaska Tepee . They serve buffalo burgers and Duffy's Rowdy Rootbeer. The  Mother Cabrini Shrine is a place of prayer and pilgrimage, known for the Stone House that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places and overlooks Denver. Mother Cabrini loved the mountains of Colorado and you can learn about her globe-trotting humanitarian work in the late 1800s and early 1900s. And if you really want to go back in time, don't miss  Dinosaur Ridge , a famous natural landmark, located near Morrison. It features famous Jurassic dinosaur bones, such as Stegosaurus and Apatosaurus, discovered in 1877, and Cretaceous dinosaur footprints. A guidebook is available for use on self-guided tours.

Craft Breweries & Distilleries

Grab a brew and some food truck grub at one of Golden's craft breweries like the unique gluten-free  Holidaily Brewing Company . Golden is home to two distinctive craft distilleries, State 38 Distilling , whose name cleverly has something to do with Colorado being the 38th state, and Golden Moon Distillery , which offers tours of its world-class facility. 

Coors Brewery

Take a self-guided audio tour (and sip some generous samples) at Coors Brewery , which churns out more than 13 million barrels of beer a year!

There are lots of great dining options. Here are a few standouts.  Nomad Taqueria & Beer Garden serves up traditional Mexican favorites like tlayudas, esquites, and chicharones and peppers. Chart House offers delicious surf and turf options from its hillside location. And  The Fort Restaurant is a full-size replica of an 1830s adobe fur-trade fort, serving buffalo, elk, quail, beef and poultry since 1963.

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre

This outdoor music venue is on everyone's bucket list! Make the short drive from downtown Denver or take a shuttle to catch an unforgettable concert under the stars. And during the day, Red Rocks is a free Denver park with hiking trails amidst the ancient monoliths. During the summer months, the venue also hosts non-musical events ranging from yoga and fitness classes to movies shown on the giant outdoor screen at dusk. 

Lariat Loop

Drive the national scenic byway , with an authentic Western experience, located between Golden, Morrison and Evergreen.

There are lots of cushy places to stay in between adventures.  The Golden Hotel is located right in the heart of downtown and overlooks Clear Creek and the Rocky Mountain foothills. Also located in downtown is the boutique  Table Mountain Inn . For music lovers, it doesn't get better than the  Origin Hotel Red Rocks , the famous amphitheater's official hotel. Mountain bikes are available for guests to borrow. Another adventure-ready option is  The Eddy Taproom & Hotel , where stunning views meet striking brick buildings.

Locals Know

Golden is home to the Colorado School of Mines , one of the nation's top universities for engineering. Incoming freshmen whitewash the school's signature letter "M" on Mt. Zion at the beginning of each school year. 

Along the 1.5-mile gravel Triceratops Trail are several stops highlighting clay mining, as well as invertebrate tracks and traces of dinosaurs, birds, mammals and insects. Plus, there are several sandstone walls full of plant impressions from the tree-lined, delta-like environment. 

Explore Golden by bike! Check out a bike at Golden's Bike Library — located at the Golden Visitors & Information Center (1010 Washington Ave.), Thursday–Sunday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m., May–October.

Well known as a picturesque town nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Golden offers its visitors breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and endless activities to enjoy. 

From hiking trails and rock climbing routes to craft breweries and art galleries, there’s no shortage of things to do when visiting Golden. 

After spending a summer exploring some of the most unique towns in the state, I’ve partnered with Emily at Sea to Summit Alaska and we’ve created the perfect one-day itinerary for you to get the most out of Golden.

A Day in Golden, Colorado

Now, with just one day to explore one of Colorado’s best tourist towns , you’ll want to be semi-precise with your timing.

Of course, if you simply want to get some brunch and stroll your way through town before hitting the Coors Factory, that’s an option.

But, if you’re hoping for an outdoor adventure perfectly balanced with some of the best eats in the city, then keep reading.

Morning in Golden

Eat Breakfast at The Golden Diner

I didn’t mean to bash on brunch… so, to start your day off right, head to The Golden Diner on 12th Street . Famous for its pancakes and breakfast burritos, this cozy diner offers a range of classic American dishes.

Kayak at Clear Creek Water Park

Afterward, make your way to Clear Creek Water Park , which is the perfect spot for tube and kayak rentals (and even paddleboards)! Whether you’re an experienced rafter or simply want to take in the views while floating down the river, there are plenty of different outings available.

The best time to visit the creek is in the morning when it’s less crowded and the brutal heat of the summer months hasn’t kicked in yet. 

By mid-afternoon, you’ll be playing adult “bumper rafts” with hundreds of other people trying to enjoy one of Golden’s finest features.

Coors Factory Brewery Tour

As for the afternoon, you’re in for a real treat! While everyone else is still wading in Clear Creek, head over to the Coors Factory for a brewery tour where you can escape the heat of the day in air conditioning with a nice, cold brew in hand.

For $10-20 a person (discounts available), you’ll receive a guided tour of the production facility and even get to sample some of their best brews. Plus, you get to keep the metal cups as souvenirs to commemorate your trip! 

Easily one of the most popular things to do in Golden, Colorado, even those who typically turn their noses to beer will enjoy this iconic tour.

Explore Downtown Golden

Now with a slight buzz in your system, it’s time to explore Golden’s vibrant art scene. Take a stroll down Washington Avenue and explore some of the funky galleries, vintage shops, and hip pubs that line the street.

Blue Moose Trading Company is the perfect spot to pick up souvenirs while nearby Duluth’s Trading Co. is the ultimate spot for your last-minute fly-fishing trip.

Snap Photos at Lookout Mountain

Before you head to dinner, take a drive up to Lookout Mountain and admire the breathtaking views of the city below. This is one of Golden’s most popular attractions and it always makes for an amazing photo-op. 

Wanderful Tip: You may think you should save this outing for sunset, but this is when it will be at its busiest! Either get up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise or opt to visit mid-day when you’ll have the mountaintop practically to yourself.

Evening in Golden

Eat Dinner at The Golden Mill

For dinner, you can’t go wrong with The Golden Mill over on Ford Street. This classic Colorado eatery offers a range of locally-sourced dishes with a modern twist. 

Enjoy their famous house-made tacos or their succulent beef brisket that’s been smoked for 14 hours among other farm-to-table favorites while taking in the rustic ambiance of this historic landmark.

Plus, offering gorgeous views of the city and the nearby Flatirons (what the locals have named the mountains surrounding the Golden area), this well-equipped bar also offers two self-pour tap walls where you can pour yourself any beer you want to enjoy your meal with. Pretty cool, right?

Enjoy a Cocktail at atōst

All that’s left to do is to top your night off with the perfect, locally-made cocktail at atōst ! A personal favorite in the city of Golden, this unsuspecting high-end cocktail bar is found in a warehouse on the edge of town. 

Less than a 15-minute ride away, you’ll be reminiscing on your favorite activities from spending a day in Golden, Colorado in style!

How to Get to Golden, Colorado

When it comes to getting to Golden, you have several options. From local buses to rideshare apps and nearby international airports, these are the best ways to get to Golden.

Flying into Denver

Now, for most of us, unless you’re coming from a bordering state such as Utah or New Mexico , you’re likely going to need a flight to get there. 

Fortunately for travelers, Denver International Airport happens to be one of the biggest hubs in North America for international travel, offering numerous routes from major airlines including JetBlue, Delta, American, and so many others.

Travel by Bus

Once you arrive, you’ll need to find your way to Golden. Luckily, there are plenty of options and the journey is very simple and relatively unintimidating. 

If you’re on a budget, then the bus will be the best option. Line 16 travels from Colfax Ave & Broadway directly to the popular Washington Ave in downtown Golden in just over an hour for typically around $3-6 per person.

Travel by Train

The second cheapest option is the train which departs directly from Union Station in downtown Denver and brings you to Golden. 

However, both of these options would require you to get into Denver first, so if you aren’t comfortable with figuring out multiple modes of transportation, then your best bet is to book an Uber or Lyft.

Travel by Rideshare

These rideshare services are in an abundance at the Denver Airport, and you’ll be able to choose your ride as soon as you land via their respective apps. 

Plus, you can have the driver drop you off right at your accommodation, saving you the hassle of finding your way on foot to your hotel with all of your belongings should you simply arrive at the local bus station in Golden.

If you’re only spending a day in Golden, Colorado, then it is suggested to budget a little bit of extra money to save all the time you can. 

Sure, the rideshare services will be more expensive, but they’ll also remove the stress of navigating the public transportation system and save you tons of time on travel.

When it’s time for the return trip from Golden to Denver, the options are the same as getting there. It’s worth noting that the bus runs more frequently during rush hour and the train is usually a bit faster if you’re trying to stay on a budget.

Either way, you’ll be able to get back to Denver with ease after your fun-filled day in Golden!

When to Visit Golden, Colorado

The best time to visit Golden, Colorado is on either side of the summer months from late spring (April through May) to early fall (September through early November) . 

The temperatures in the area remain mild and pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor breweries, food trucks, window shopping, and more.

Plus, during this time, there are plenty of events happening throughout the city including the Golden Fine Arts Festival and endless concerts and comedians at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater that will make your stay even more enjoyable.

While Golden does offer some winter activities as well, such as skiing at nearby ski resorts, it’s best to avoid visiting during late fall and early winter due to short daylight hours and icy roads. 

Some businesses also close in the winter, so if you want to see Golden in full swing (like it is during its participation in the annual Buffalo Bill Days), then between the spring, summer, and fall is the best time to visit.

That being said, if you plan on taking a trip to Golden during any other time of the year, be sure to pack accordingly. 

Temperatures can dip into the single digits at night, and with the mountains so near, it’s always best to be prepared for whatever type of weather might come your way.

No matter what time of year you decide to visit Golden, you can rest assured that you’ll find plenty of great things to do while you’re there like exploring all the local attractions to shopping in unique boutiques.

Golden, Colorado is a unique destination with a history that comes alive in its charming downtown streets, Victorian buildings, and proud culture.

1. Hit the Trails

One of the absolute most popular things to do in Golden, CO is hiking on the many amazing trails around town.

Explore some nice easy hikes near Denver on the Peaks to Plains Trail along Clear Creek or up the mesas of North and South Table Mountains.

Lookout Mountain offers a variety of excellent hikes, including Chimney Gulch, and you can head to Golden Gate Canyon State Park for more of the best Golden hikes .

2. Tackle Epic Climbing Routes

Another one of the main outdoor Golden attractions is rock climbing. Clear Creek Canyon climbing is some of the best sport climbing in the area, while North Table offers a mix of sport and trad on basalt cliff bands.

3. Tour & Taste at the Coors Brewery

Beyond the mesas and foothills, the main landmark in Golden is the Coors Brewery.

You can visit the brewery and take a tour of the facility and get to sample some Coors beverages, or sign up for just a sampling in the lounge.

Reservations are required, and the tour is $20/person while the tasting is $10/person.

4. Have a Pint at a Local Brewery

Golden attractions include a bunch of breweries beyond Coors.

• New Terrain – At the base of North Table Mountain, this popular brewery is a great stop after hiking or biking up the mesa and often features live music on its outdoor stage.
• Mountain Toad – Just a block away from Clear Creek, Mountain Toad features interesting beers and a homey vibe.
• Golden City – It’s all about the patio seating at Golden City, which offers excellent sours along with other brews.
• Cannonball Creek – Located off of CO-93, Cannonball Creek is convenient for a pit stop after hiking Mt. Galbraith or the west side of North Table.
• Barrels & Bottles – This fun spot has several of their own beers on tap, along with wine and their signature wine slushie. The original location is in downtown Golden, and there is now a second location in the Denver West area.

5. Seek Out the Speakeasy

If you prefer cocktails to beers, head to the Golden Moon Speakeasy.

Hidden, but not too hard to find, next to the saloon in Miners Alley, Golden Moon makes outstanding artisanal cocktails that change with the seasons.

6. Get Your Caffeine Fix

When you’re in need of a pick me up, Golden’s got you covered with plenty of lovely coffee shops.

• Windy Saddle – A mainstay in downtown Golden, Windy Saddle is a community gathering place serving tasting breakfast, lunch, & coffee drinks.
• Cafe 13 – A modern cafe with delicious egg dishes, salads, and sandwiches, Cafe 13 also offers a variety of mimosas and breakfast cocktails.
• Launch Cafe – At the junction of I-70 & Colfax, this is the perfect place to grab coffee and breakfast to go before heading out to the mountains for the day, although the charming space is great for lingering, too.

7. Tube Down Clear Creek

One of the quintessential things to do in Golden, CO is tubing down Clear Creek on a sunny summer day.

Bring your own tube or inflatable or rent from Golden River Sports, then hike up the Peaks to Plains trail to the put in and enjoy the refreshing water on your ride back down the creek.

Clear Creek is also one of the most popular places for white water rafting in Colorado. So if you want to kick it up a notch, you can hire a guide to take you rafting through the rapids.

8. Find Fossils at Dinosaur Ridge

A National Natural Landmark, Dinosaur Ridge is the top dinosaur track site in the country. You can see more than 250 dinosaur tracks, along with many bones and fossils.

9. American Mountaineering Museum

One of the unique things to do in Golden, CO is wandering around the American Mountaineering Museum and take in the climbing history.

The museum features a variety of exhibits including historical climbing gear and incredible photos. Admission is $7/person.

10. Explore Red Rocks Amphitheater

Visiting Red Rocks amphitheater is one of the very top things to do near Golden. Located in Morrison, right next door to Golden, seeing a show at this iconic amphitheater is definitely a Colorado bucket list item.

You can also check out some cool hikes near Denver by hiking the trails around Red Rocks, including the short but super steep Mount Morrison.

11. Golden History Museum & Park

The Golden History Museum & Park offer a view into how the town was built and how it has evolved over the years.

Visiting the museum and walking through the outdoor park is one of the fun free things to do in Colorado .

12. Bike Through the Foothills

Golden is a very bike-friendly place with plenty of trails to ride.

The under-construction Peaks to Plains Trail is a paved path that runs along the creek, while North Table Mountain, Lookout Mountain, and White Ranch Park offer plenty of hilly trails.

13. Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave

Delve into the history of “Buffalo Bill” Cody at this museum of the wild west. The museum is located at the top of Lookout Mountain, and admission is $5/person.

14. Lariat Loop Scenic Drive

Lariat Loop is a wonderful scenic drive near Denver . Head from Golden to Morrison to Evergreen and back in a loop that encompasses some of the best Golden attractions.

15. Golden Farmers Market

From June to October, local vendors sell produce, baked goods, and hand-crafted goods at the Golden Farmers Market.

Bring your appetite and some reusable bags to the parking lot of the Golden Library on Saturdays to check it out.

Golden really is a foodie town, with local institutions and new food halls offering something for every palate.

• The Golden Mill – The happening spot in Golden these days, this food hall has an awesome two-story outdoor space and self-pour taps for drinks to go along with tasty meals from the food vendors.
• Sherpa House – A classic Golden restaurant featuring generous portions of extremely tasty Himalayan cuisine.
• Woody’s Wood-Fired Pizza – You’ll almost always find a line out the door at this Golden institution with an all-you-can-eat pizza, soup, and salad bar. Don’t forget to put honey on your crust!
• Thai Gold – Get some delicious Thai food in a historic building in downtown Golden.
• Bob’s Atomic Burgers – This unpretentious burger joint is always full of locals and visitors building their own burger combos.
• Bonfire Burritos – You can’t beat Bonfire for an epic breakfast burrito to start your day or sate your hunger post-adventure. But order ahead online or be prepared for a wait – everyone knows that Bonfire is the place to be!

17. Stroll & Shop on Washington Ave

Washington Avenue is Golden’s main street and has plenty of shops to stop in, including Bentgate Mountaineering for your outdoor gear needs, Marrygrams for cute gifts and stationery, and both The Red Wagon and Blue Moose for local souvenirs.

18. Visit Lookout Mountain Nature Center & Preserve

Well-located near Denver, Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve makes for a fun family day trip from the Mile High City. The center features cool, interactive exhibits that appeal to kids as they learn through exploration.

Then, right next door to the nature canter is a family-friendly trail that offers excellent views of the surrounding area. Afterward, visit the historic Boettcher Mansion. It’s over one hundred years old and is well worth visiting during a tour. Just make sure it’s open since it’s regularly used for private events.

19. Explore Windy Saddle Park

Popular among hang gliders and paragliders, Windy Saddle Park gets its name from the strong wind that blows through the area from the Continental Divide.

However, if you’re not feeling quite that adventurous then you can always explore 3.5-miles of hiking and biking trails. After all, top hikes through the area include the Lookout Mountain Trail, the Beaver Brook Trail, and the Mount Zion Trail.

20. Visit the Colorado Railroad Museum

Easily one of the best things to do in Golden, CO, the Colorado Railroad Museum is located on 15 acres of land that features Clear Creek flowing between the North and South Table Mountains.

Now, you could easily spend the day here since there are tons of cool things to explore in addition to the upper and lower gallery of the Depot Museum. But, highlights include scenic train rides, exploring the outdoor rail yard with vintage trains, visiting the Outdoor Garden Railroad, and more.

Local Tip: During the holiday season (starting in October) you can hop aboard the Polar Express and go for a cool train ride at the museum. Just be sure to book well in advance since tickets are very popular.

21. Explore Golden Gate Canyon State Park

This epic Colorado state park near Golden is home to a wealth of tree-lined paths that are perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

After all, this 12,119-acre natural oasis in the Front Range was initially founded in 1960 and features upwards of 42 miles of hiking paths, as well as 27 miles of biking/horseback riding trails.

However, some of my fave hiking trails through the area include the Raccoon Trail, the Mountain Lion Trail, and the Burro Trail Loop to Windy Peak.

So, grab those hiking boots and enjoy one of the best things to do in Golden, CO for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Local Tip: If you can try and visit during the fall since the Aspens turn a gorgeous yellow color.

Where to Stay in Golden

Golden is a great stop on a Colorado road trip itinerary and has a few excellent places to stay.

Get a room at The Eddy Hotel at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon, The Golden Hotel right along the banks of Clear Creek, or the boutique Dove Inn downtown.

There is virtually no camping in the area, but the Clear Creek RV park is in a beautiful location along the creek and does offer a few tent sites in the summer.

Golden, Colorado, makes for a perfect weekend getaway destination. This Front Range frontier town sits just west of Denver’s urban sprawl, is near the gateway to the Rockies, and — by the way — is the birthplace of Coors beer. There’s plenty for everyone to see, do, eat, and drink in gorgeous Golden!

Things To Do In Golden

Golden is the perfect place to embrace the great outdoors, and if you plan well, you can also include healthy doses of history, culture, and shopping for a weekend you won’t soon forget. Here are a few of our favorite things to do in and around this charming Wild West town.

Get To Know Golden

Golden is proud of its rich frontier history, and there are plenty of places in town where you can learn all about it. Start off at Golden History Museum and Park to discover what pioneer life was really like in this town that came alive during the gold rush. Through artifacts and exhibits, you’ll get to know the people and events that shaped this mountain town. The adjacent park is home to original buildings from a 1910-era ranch, and there’s also a one-room schoolhouse where area children were taught until 1951. When you’re finished there, take a free, self-guided walking tour of the downtown district, and use your cell phone to navigate!

Introducing Buffalo Bill

William F. Cody — also known as Buffalo Bill — was a dazzling showman who left his mark on the American West. His traveling troupe toured cities and small towns across America, showcasing the talents of cowboys, hunters, and sharpshooters, including Annie Oakley. Cody’s spectacle was so beloved that Queen Victoria invited him and all of his Wild West performers to England for her Jubilee Celebration. Cody performed many times in the state of Colorado, and when he fell ill visiting his sister in Denver, he told his family he wanted to be buried on nearby Lookout Mountain.

The museum founded in his honor was established just a few years later near the site of his grave. It includes rare objects and artifacts from the Wild West, offering a fascinating glimpse of what life was like for its legendary performers. Make sure to pay your respects at Buffalo Bill’s grave, and save room for a buffalo burger or chili at the on-site cafe.

Hit The Rails

There’s just something magical about trains. They’re one of our favorite ways to travel, but their role in Colorado history is especially important. While the region is blessed with its mountains, the Rockies presented a huge challenge for shipping and transportation. The creativity it took to eventually build tracks through them — and in high altitude — was Herculean.

You can learn more about the challenge at the Colorado Railroad Museum . The Depot Museum traces the role of the rails in Colorado with original documents and rare photos; the roundhouse and railyard are packed with diesel engines, passenger cars, and cabooses. You can even take a ride around the complex in a historic locomotive. This is a terrific spot to spend part of the day.

Coors Brewery Tour

The Coors Brewery is the largest single-site brewery in the world, and it’s been in Golden since its founding in 1873. That’s when Adolph Coors moved to Denver, worked as a gardener for a month, then decided to convert a tanning factory into a brewery in nearby Golden. The rest is history. Take a 30-minute tour of the facility to see how the brewmasters craft Coors, and sample some of their work.

Go Fishing In Clear Creek

Anglers take note (and grab your gear): Golden’s Clear Creek is more than just a scenic mountain stream. It’s home to some incredible trout fishing as well. The water is home to mostly brown trout, but you’ll also find rainbow and brook varieties. Local fly fishers know these waters well, so bring plenty of patience with you as well; you might need to find both a parking spot and a fishing spot. But you might just be rewarded with a terrific catch. Remember: You need to have a valid Colorado fishing license to try your hand here. They are available for purchase at several outdoor stores in Golden.

Get Your Steps In!

There’s no two ways about it: You need to spend at least some of your Golden weekend on the trails. There are many to choose from, with a wide range of difficulty, from easy to advanced. The Clear Creek Trail is a gentle one that will take you along the water, through neighborhoods, and into downtown. For more of a challenge, consider the North Table Mountain Trail . It’s just 1.5 miles with stunning views of the Golden Valley, but you’ll have to work a bit given the trail’s 400-foot elevation gain. No matter where you choose to roam, Golden has plenty of trails to ensure you get those steps in!

Get To Red Rocks

Just eight miles south of Golden is one of the more amazing concert venues we’ve ever visited: Red Rocks Amphitheatre . This incredible spot was built into the massive red boulders for which it’s named and has played host to the biggest names in music. If you can snag tickets to a concert here during your weekend, you won’t regret it. Red Rocks also occasionally holds special events including yoga sessions, and there is terrific hiking on the trails nearby.

Best Places To Eat In Golden

With all of the great things to see and do in Golden, you’re going to work up an appetite. And that’s a good thing because Golden’s food scene is on the upswing. For starters, the much-buzzed-about Abejas focuses on fresh, local ingredients with an ever-changing menu. The Tributary Food Hall is a great spot to wander and sample various cuisines, and the recently renovated Buffalo Rose , first founded in 1859, is worth a visit. The gastropub is a Golden mainstay and has been for more than 160 years.

While Coors is still king here, Golden is also known for its many acclaimed microbreweries, many of which routinely pair up with local food trucks to offer fun fare for patrons. If you really want to pack in the calories, head to Nick’s Cafe for Elvis Presley’s favorite Fool’s Gold Loaf. Legend has it that The King craved the massive bacon, peanut butter, and grape jelly sandwich so much that he once had his private jet fly from Graceland to Colorado to pick one up.

Best Places To Shop In Golden

Golden’s historic downtown district is crammed with galleries, boutiques, and shops. Make it your home base to pick up reminders of your visit to this Wild West town. There are many outdoor outfitters if you need gear, and the town definitely pays homage to its gold rush past with several jewelry stores. To pamper your friends back home, stop into Sweet Earth Botanicals for a terrific array of naturally scented soaps, herbal tea, local honey, and more.

Best Places To Stay In Golden

To stay at a spot where high-end luxe meets small-inn charm, consider the historic Dove Inn B&B . This freshly-renovated Victorian home features exposed brick, a variety of rooms and suites furnished with a funky mix of period and modern pieces, and behind-the-scenes but attentive service. A continental breakfast is left for guests in the refrigerator each morning, and a coffee bar is available at all times. The Dove Inn puts your right in the middle of downtown and within walking distance of many attractions.

The Golden Hotel is another favorite. Located adjacent to Clear Creek, this modern hotel gives guests a mountain lodge feel, and its restaurant proudly features Colorado-grown and raised produce and fare.

It’s old hat for those who live at high altitude, but if you’re not used to the thinner mountain air, you could be in for a rude awakening! To avoid altitude sickness and the unpleasantness it can bring, be sure to hydrate often, don’t overdo the alcohol, and take your time during bike rides, hikes, or any other physical activity in Golden.

Golden is a city in the Denver Area of Colorado . It sits at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and distance-wise is roughly halfway between the cities of Boulder and Denver . It is the home of the Coors Brewery, the Colorado School of Mines, and the Colorado Railroad Museum.

The city of Golden has a distinct country-western atmosphere due in part to its gold-mining history and in part to its proximity to the front range. A slogan often used to describe the city claims that it's "Where The West Lives". Also, an iconic, antique signboard draped over Golden's Main Street ushers in travelers with "Howdy Folks! Welcome To Golden".

In keeping with the general spirit of the Rockies, Golden is an outdoor, active town. It's not unusual to see kayakers lugging boats around town and playing in the mile long whitewater course that runs through town, or mountain bikers returning from a ride up to the surrounding hills.

Golden is a tourist town in summer and a college town the rest of the year.

Golden is not between Boulder and Denver. It is west of Denver and south of Boulder. There are other cities between Golden and Denver, e.g. Lakewood and Wheat Ridge.

The Amtrak California Zephyr and Winter Park Express serve Denver Union Station . You can use the RTD light rail W line for the 43-minute ride from Denver Union Station to the Jeffco Government Center Station in southeast Golden.

Golden is served by the RTD light rail W line which connects to Lakewood and Denver, RTD bus routes 17 and GS, and the RTD GDFX FlexRide bus service .

Downtown Golden consists of a strip of businesses surrounded by residential neighborhoods. This commercial and business portion of Golden is relatively small, and can be driven or biked through, or even covered by foot, in a short amount of time. In fact, Golden is very alternative-transportation friendly, and groups of walkers or bikers are always seen moving through town. The downtown area is an active hub for area residents. Numerous events are sponsored there throughout the year. One of these is a weekly Friday night street party with music and local restaurants selling tapas and beverages. In August the city sponsors a popular fine arts festival. In 2012 professional cyclists will, for the second consecutive year, begin a day of racing in the middle of town.

Activities in Golden are usually split between visiting its historical sites including the Coors Brewery, and doing outdoors activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking.

Tours operate M-Sa 10AM-4PM . guests over 21 years old offered limited free samples, guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The main tourist draw for the city, the Coors Brewery in Golden is also the largest beer brewing plant in the world on a single site. It is easily recognized for its sheer size and space consumption, and in particular, its plain grey walls and large, red "Coors" sign mural. If you visit Golden, you will undoubtedly notice the distinct fragrance of grains, hops, and alcohol wafting through the air at any point in town, any time of the year. The brewery is a popular attraction mainly because of the guided tours it offers. These tours last about 45 minutes, and guests over the age of 21 are treated to a free sample of the brewery's confectionery. $20 . ( updated Feb 2022 )
• Clear Creek Whitewater Park . Along 10th St in Clear Creek. Considered to be the heart of the Colorado kayaking social scene, the mile long course in Clear Creek provides a playspot for both playboaters and slalom kayakers, as well as a plethora of tubers and boogie boarders. Even if you don't want to get in the water, head down to the park to watch kayakers ripping it up in the holes some of the best kayakers in the state practice here on a regular basis. If you want to try kayaking, local kayak school RA Guides provides lessons here regularly during the summer months, or, if you having boating experience, kayaks can be rented from either of the two river stores in town, Golden River Sports or Alpenglow. The park is beginner friendly and folks are more than happy to help out newcomers, as long as you have some common sense and basic courtesy. Look but don't touch others' boats, wait your turn and be safe.

Despite being a college town, a surprising number of Golden's restaurants close early, or are only open for breakfast and lunch. The late night crowd moves to bars (or Denver proper) instead.

• Windy Saddle Cafe , 1110 Washington Ave , ☏ +1 303-279-1905 . Su-W 7AM - 6PM, Th-Sa 7AM - 9PM . Comfortable spot to grab a sandwich for lunch and watch the activity on Washington outside. Kid-friendly.  
• Woody's Woodfired Pizza and Watering Hole , 1305 Washington Ave , ☏ +1 303 277-0443 . Family owned restaurant located a block from the Coors Brewery  
• 39.7547 -105.2213 1 Ace Hi Tavern , 1216 Washington Avenue , ☏ +1 303-279-9043 . If one bar is the locals' watering hole, this is it. Music is from the jukebox and the place isn't the prettiest, but on any night of the week this place will be full of college students and old-timers alike. Great place to drop in and get to know the residents of the town. Located on Washington next to Foss Drug.

Several hotels, particularly the chain hotels, that claim to be in Golden are often well outside the city proper – no more than a few minutes' drive away on US-6, but not within walking distance. Addresses on 6th Ave., or any name including "Denver West", are both tip-offs.

8 Best Things to Do in Golden Colorado in One Day

Golden, Colorado, is one of the most underrated destinations to visit in the Denver area. Many of the best things to do in Golden Colorado are located near each other, making visiting with only 24 hours even easier.

When we moved to Denver, visiting Golden was actually at the top of our list. We have a soft spot for cute mountain towns , and our extensive research showed us that Golden was one of those places. So, one winter day, we made our way to Golden from LoDo.

Because of how much we loved our trip, we’ve rounded up the ultimate list of the best things to do in Golden Colorado so that you can have a great visit, too.

How to Get to Golden Colorado

There are quite a few ways to get to Golden, Colorado. The following modes of transportation are specifically for getting to Golden from Denver, but many of them can be applicable no matter where you’re traveling to Golden from.

The easiest way to get to Golden is by car. It only takes about twenty minutes from downtown Denver to get to Golden. The drive is easy, and the scenery gets more beautiful the closer you get to Golden because you’ll get closer to the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Another option is to combine Lyft/Uber and the light rail. From Union Station, you can hop on the W train towards Jeffco and get off at Jefferson County Government Center – Golden Station. From there, order a Lyft/Uber to somewhere in downtown Golden, like the Table Mountain Inn. 

This may seem like many steps, but if you’re visiting the area without a car, it’s completely doable to get to Golden this way. In fact, on our very first trip to Golden, we used Lyft and the light rail because we didn’t own a car just yet.

How to Get Around Golden CO

The easiest way to get around Golden is to use your own two feet, especially if you plan on mostly exploring the downtown area. Many of the top attractions are near each other, which is why it’s so easy to walk.

Another option is to use a car if you happen to drive to Golden. Lyft and Uber are also other ways to get around Golden if you travel a bit wider in the area versus just exploring downtown.

Lastly, FlexRide is a choice for getting around. This bus has quite a few stops throughout Golden, making it easy to get around at an affordable price. Keep in mind that it’s not in use during weekends or on Sundays.

When to Visit Golden Colorado

Truthfully, there is no wrong time to visit Golden. Colorado is one state that has near-perfect weather no matter the time of year, which is a bit of a secret!

As you might have guessed, most people visit Golden during the summer. The weather during this time can get pretty hot, averaging the high 80s. Try visiting during another time of year because this is considered peak season if you can avoid it.

Winter is a great time to visit if you want to do winter adventure sports. Golden usually gets quite a bit of snow during the winter and the temperature averages around 44°F.

Spring and fall can also be great times to visit if you can get the time off! Spring and fall temperatures are around 60°F.

Where to Stay in Golden Colorado

Because Golden isn’t a large city, there aren’t many places to stay here. Luckily, there are still some great places worth staying.

Table Mountain Inn

The best place to stay in Golden is the  Table Mountain Inn ! It’s located directly in downtown Golden, and if you’re lucky, you’ll even have a room with a balcony with great views of Lookout Mountain.

This can be a pricier hotel, with nightly rates averaging between $200 and $300 a night, depending on the room type you choose to book. What makes this hotel even better is that it has its own cantina with fantastic food (speaking from experience!). The quesadillas are to die for.

The Silk Pincushion

For more homey accommodation, you could consider staying at  The Silk Pincushion . Prices start at around $150 a night, and no room costs more than $200 (depending on the time of year).

The Silk Pincushion is a bed and breakfast with strong Victorian vibes. It tends to be a great place to stay if you’re traveling with just two people, making it an excellent accommodation for a romantic getaway in Golden. This bed and breakfast is not that far from Coors Brewery or Dinosaur Ridge.

Hampton Inn Denver – West/Golden

Another option for accommodation is the  Hampton Inn . It’s about three miles from downtown Golden and has a lot of room options. Some of the rooms can even host up to five guests at a time. If you’re traveling with a large group, this could be an excellent place for you to stay!

Rooms range in price between $200 and $220, depending on the time of year. Breakfast is included, and every room includes a microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker. Plus, there’s a gym that all guests are allowed to use.

Best Things to do in Golden Colorado with 1 Day

One day in Golden Colorado is the perfect amount of time to explore the town, especially if you’re a first-time visitor! If you plan your day wisely, you’ll easily have an unforgettable trip.

Grab breakfast from a local shop

Because Golden is a small town, there are many different local places to eat! Luckily, this itinerary includes many of them.

Start your day out right by grabbing a coffee from  Higher Grounds Cafe . It’s located near downtown Golden, and it’s one of the most popular coffee shops in town for both locals and tourists. 

They also have delicious cafe treats like donuts, scones, and more. Plus, Higher Grounds Cafe opens early, around 5:30 a.m., so no matter what time you start your day, they’ll probably be open.

For a more sit-down type of breakfast, consider heading to  The Golden Diner . They offer almost any kind of breakfast you can think of, including pancakes, waffles, eggs, and even breakfast burritos.

Hike Lookout Mountain Nature Center

Like there are many  free things to do in Denver , there are also free things to do in Golden. Hiking Lookout Mountain is easily one of the best free things to do here.

After filling your stomach with delicious local breakfast food, head over to Lookout Mountain and be prepared to get one of the best views in the entire town! No visit to Golden is complete without hiking up at least one trail on Lookout Mountain.

Arguably the easiest trail to hike on Lookout Mountain is the  Windy Saddle Trail . This trail is only about 4.5 miles long, and the elevation gain is a little more than 700 feet. It’s ranked as a moderate trail but can become more difficult if you happen to hike after it rains because the path is prone to getting muddy. Overall, this trail will take, on average, between two and three hours to hike.

If you’re not a fan of hiking, consider going for a walk along the Clear Creek Path. This is a lot easier, but it is still very calming and has excellent views along the way. Visiting this area is one of the best outdoor activities in Golden!

Eat lunch at a local restaurant

Similar to breakfast, there are a lot of great places to eat locally for lunch. Here are a few of the top-rated options!

Bonfire Burritos  is the perfect place to go to try delicious Colorado burritos. Make sure you order one with green chile, which is a local delicacy. There isn’t a lot of outdoor seating here for you to enjoy the weather, but there are many seats inside.

For an A+ burger, head to  Bob’s Atomic Burgers . This restaurant offers tons of burgers, hot dogs, and more. Plus, no burger is complete without a side of fries and a milkshake, which also are on the menu.

Woody’s Pizza  is the top-rated pizza place in the area and is one of the best restaurants in Golden. There’s tons of outdoor seating, and it’s been a Golden staple for twenty years and counting. Plus, there are tons of pizza choices, so even if you’re a picky eater, you’ll be able to find something for yourself on the menu.

Go on a Coors Brewery Tour

A trip to Golden Colorado isn’t complete without going on a  tour of Coors Brewery . Luckily, there’s a shuttle that will bring you from downtown right to the brewery, so you can still go on the tour if you aren’t traveling with a car.

Tours are usually only during the afternoon, so make sure you hop in line ASAP. If you can book tickets ahead of time, make sure to do so!

Learn at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Because of Golden’s Old West heritage, you’ll have to make sure you head over to  Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave . It’s filled with exhibits about William F. Cody (also known as “Buffalo Bill”) and has been open for 100 years as of 2021.

The museum isn’t massive, so it won’t take a lot of time to explore. However, it’s still well worth it to go in and at least spend an hour or two learning more about the local history while visiting Golden.

Explore downtown Golden

Before you grab dinner and get ready to wind down for the evening, head to historic downtown Golden! This is where you can find most shops, restaurants, cafes, and more. Even if you’re just window shopping, this is a super fun place to explore.

While you’re in downtown Golden, make sure you take a photo with the giant “Welcome to Golden” arch sign that crosses over the road. It’s pretty iconic and looks great in photos.

Eat dinner at another local restaurant

After exploring downtown Golden, you’re probably ready for dinner! Here are a few of the best restaurants for dinner in the area.

Buffalo Rose  doubles as a restaurant and an entertainment spot, making it the perfect place to grab a bite to eat. It opened in 1858 and has been a staple in Golden ever since. The menu is filled with cocktails, sandwiches, salads, and more. There’s also a kid’s menu in case you’re traveling with children.

We ate here once when family visited and loved the atmosphere inside. KP ordered a chicken Caesar salad that she absolutely loved.

Another great place to grab a bite to eat is the  Table Mountain Cantina ! If you happen to be staying at the Table Mountain Inn, you’re in luck; the restaurant is located inside the hotel. There’s indoor and outdoor seating. 

If there are spots outside, definitely ask to be seated there. You’ll be rewarded with great views of Lookout Mountain. The menu here includes many great Mexican dishes, including quesadillas, tacos, and more.

Are you traveling with picky eaters, or do you want to have more options when dining? Go to  Tributary Food Hall . There are around ten different vendors inside, with foods including gyros, poke, pizza, pasta, bbq, and more. Plus, there’s a gelato shop and a crepe place so that you can grab dessert right after!

Finish the night with drinks

There’s no better way to finish the night and your 24 hours in Golden Colorado than by heading to a local joint to grab a drink. This is one of the best things to do at night in Golden.

If you want a place that will bring you back in time, head to the  Miners Saloon . They have tons of drinks, and the inside will immediately take you back in time to when the city was home to lots of miners.

Golden Moon Speakeasy  is another excellent place to grab a drink in downtown Golden. They have tons of cocktails, and the interior is gorgeous with tons of fun fairy lights and a speakeasy vibe.

As you can see, there are tons of great things to do in Golden. No matter what time of year you’re visiting, you’ll have a memorable experience here.

If you follow me on Instagram , you probably saw that I was recently in Colorado. On our way to Boulder, we stopped in Golden, Colorado, for a couple of days. Before arriving, I didn’t know much about this city, but it’s so charming. It’s the perfect getaway for a weekend with outdoor activities, scenic beauty, and cute shops. Ready to book your trip to Golden? Here’s the ultimate Golden, Colorado travel guide!

Where To Stay:

We stayed at the Table Mountain Inn , and I can’t say enough good things! Everything from the attentive service, mountain views, and southwestern charm makes this adobe-style boutique hotel the ultimate place to stay in Golden. Since it’s in the heart of Golden, it’s walking distance to most things, and we loved the prime downtown location. In addition, the hotel offers spacious rooms designed to maximize comfort away from home, and we truly felt at home.

What To Do:

Visit the Colorado Railroad Museum . I was honored to be invited and attended an exclusive media event hosted at the Colorado Railroad Museum, a beautiful space for hosting events surrounded by Colorado’s rich railroad history located on 15 acres. They also offer Table Mountain Inn’s full-service catering options for events, including the Table Mountain Grill & Cantina’s thoughtfully crafted menus.

Have a drink at the Golden Moon Speakeasy . What a cozy speakeasy-style lounge that features handcrafted cocktails, and all the drinks are made solely with the spirits produced by Golden Moon Distillery . They also have live music several nights per week.

Take a Coors brewery tour . This facility is the largest single-site brewery globally and one of the most popular things to do in Golden, especially for beer lovers. They give multiple samples to visitors over 21 on the guided tour, or you can skip that and try some beers in the lounge. Since their reopening, they do require reservations and proof of vaccination. I highly recommend booking in advance because the slots quickly fill up!

Stroll around. There’s so much scenic beauty, and restaurants and shops line the main street that you can’t miss featuring the iconic arch. We didn’t mind walking because there were beautiful views everywhere.

Take a day trip. Golden is only 20 miles south of Boulder and 16 miles west of Denver (my Boulder travel guide is coming in two weeks). Also, Red Rocks Amphitheatre is less than 8 miles away, and Rocky Mountain National Park is about an hour and a half drive — so bummed we didn’t have time for either of them! If you want to extend your trip, there are many things to do in the surrounding area.

Where To Eat:

Table Mountain Grill & Cantina — Table Mountain Inn’s restaurant keeps with the theme with its vibrant Santa Fe decor and fresh Southwestern food. We tried their margaritas, coriander flank fajitas, and Santa Fe hot chicken sandwich, and everything was delicious!

Windy Saddle Cafe — This homey cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and coffee. We didn’t get a chance to eat here, but we stopped by for coffee and pastries three times throughout our trip because we loved it so much!

Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza — Located right across from our hotel, Woody’s has been a favorite since 1993. We weren’t too hungry when we went, so we just shared a pizza; however, we noticed the table next to us taking advantage of the buffet option, which looked fantastic.

The Golden Mill — We drove past this place when we first arrived and knew we wanted to return. It’s a food hall with numerous local food choices, from BBQ to ice cream to Mexican to sushi, but the coolest part is the self-pour tap wall with over 50 options. They charged by the ounce so you can try all sorts of drinks! Also, there are stunning views of Clear Creek from the rooftop patio.

If you’re in Golden and craving Mexican food, try Xicamiti La Taqueria Bistro–it’s really good! You can also check the nearby Jeffco Fairgrounds for events–that’s where they host the County Fair and other horse shows and rodeos throughout the summer.

With a growing population of nearly 20,000 people , Golden has quickly become an excellent alternative for those interested in living among the grand mountain landscapes of the Rocky Mountains, while simultaneously being within a short driving distance of the city center and city life.

Sounds like the ideal combo, don't you think? This is exactly what Colorado transplants are looking for: a mix of country and city.

As you may already be aware, historically, Golden was founded during the Colorado Gold Rush and was originally used as a mining town. Hence, the name of the prestigious university located in Golden, the Colorado School of Mines, which was established in 1874. According to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Golden was initially the center of the territory and enacted as the capital city, before it was officially moved to Denver.

If you're interested in exploring Golden while learning about its history, there are multiple museums, tours, and cultural attractions that are not only educational but interesting to see.

Golden History Museum and Park , for example, is a free public space uncovering Golden's past where you can see the city's collection of over 15,000 historical objects. Today, visitors can participate in a 30-minute look at the malting, brewing, and packaging process, and also taste a variety of Coors Beer samples. This Mountain Town Has A Vibrant Culture With A Variety Of Family Fun Offerings

Golden offers the charm of a mountain town with an infusion of activities that'll make any city dweller green with envy.

The newest addition to life in Golden is a familiar favorite to Denverites. Babe's Tea Room offers afternoon tea, bubbly brunches, and sweet summer refreshments that are perfect for a day out with friends and family. It officially opened in June 2024 and is undoubtedly a unique cosmopolitan add-on to the historic feel of downtown Golden.

And if that wasn't enough sweetness for you, if you feel like you're a Parisian at heart, you'll love stepping into Earth Sweet Boutique , a French-inspired boutique that sells a variety of handmade, eco-conscious, and "Farm to Shelf" products made by women-owned companies. Plus, they offer a variety of classes, workshops, and events.

If you're an artist at heart, or your little one is interested in arts and crafts, the Foothills Art Center is filled with lists of classes available for adults and youth throughout the year. For adults, you can enjoy Botanic Printmaking with Gelatin Plates or Fall Scenes, and for your little ones, they can have fun with Underwater Watercolor Creatures or Krafting in the Kitchen.

These are just a few classes offered. If you're interested in exploring local artists and their work, schedule your visit around Artsweek Golden Festival , which runs from June 17th - 23rd. This is a week-long celebration with local and national artists exhibiting their beautiful work. Nearby Adventures And Attractions That Are Known Around The World

Golden may be under the radar, but these nearby adventures attract worldwide attention.

A quick 20-minute drive outside of Golden gets you to an amphitheater that is recognized unlike any other, literally. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater is known for two things: the epic hiking and the equally epic open-air amphitheater, which seems to be practically carved out of the surrounding sandstone.

Since its official opening in 1941 (seriously, 1941!), Red Rocks quickly became a Colorado landmark that has shaped the world around it. Now, it hosts thousands of artists, bands, DJs, comedians, and various shows and activities throughout the year, which attracts people from around the world, curious and interested in experiencing a one-of-a-kind music venue and amphitheater under the stars.

There are many reasons to visit Red Rocks besides its concerts , and if you're curious to visit the park during the day, you can certainly visit the amphitheater and Red Rocks Park, regardless of whether there's an event to hike through the beauty of the Mars-like landscape.
