If you are on a tight budget, getting around Ireland by public transportation is perhaps the cheapest way to see the Emerald Isle.

irelandonabudget.com

If you are under 25, renting a car in Ireland is quite expensive, and for seniors, there may be some limitations as car rental companies in Ireland can enforce their own restriction policies for senior drivers.

So opting for other modes of transportation is a good idea.

Rail Transportation Across Ireland

While the rail network in Ireland is pretty good, it is only suitable if you are taking direct routes.

Dublin , the capital of Ireland, is the hub of the network and from there you can get to most big towns and cities in Ireland, except for Co. Donegal.

Iarnrod Eireann (otherwise known as Irish Rail ) provides rail transport in the Republic of Ireland.

Here is a look at the rail network in Ireland.

Getting Around Ireland by Train

My advice if taking the train in Ireland is to do so if you know there is a direct connection available. Otherwise, you will have to switch to other lines, and the journey may take longer than anticipated.

However, if transferring to other trains doesn't bother you, by all means, go ahead and do it.

irelandonabudget.com

All-in-all, traveling by train in Ireland is a pleasant experience. However, it is not as extensive as the train you will find in mainland Europe, unfortunately.

All trains have free WiFi as well as a dining car.

There are 11 routes operating out of Dublin, which has two train stations serving different parts of the country.

irelandonabudget.com

Heuston Station (named after Seán Heuston, a young railway worker who commanded a nearby post in the 1916 Easter Rising ) services the south and west of Ireland, including Cork , Tralee, Limerick, Galway , Westport, Ballina , and Waterford).

Connolly Station (named after James Connolly, one of the leaders of the Easter 1916 Rising) services north and west of the country, including Sligo, Wexford, Rosslare Europort, and Belfast).

The Premier Class ticket available on the direct Dublin-Tralee line and on the Dublin to Cork line includes transport in a dedicated “premier” coach, your name above your seat, ambient table lighting, and more.

While you can certainly click on the First Class option (if it's available for the route you are taking), a more cost-effective strategy is to buy a standard ticket, then go back on to the Irish Rail site again.

a headrest getting around Ireland

Be sure to go back to the main page of the website, and enter your origin, destination, and the same dates that you originally entered. A pop-up should appear saying something like this: “customers who have a valid standard class ticket but wish to upgrade to first class should also use this section.”

Then, click Free Travel Pass or Valid Ticket underneath the destination details. At this point, you should click on the Go button and a new set of results will appear, offering you the first-class fare at a cheaper price than if you had originally chosen the First Class option, to begin with.

If you are traveling with a bicycle or a pet , both are allowed on trains in Ireland. If you can fold your bike, it is free to take it onboard. Small dogs must be kept on the customer's lap while on the train. Assistance dogs are allowed too but must have the designated medallion that is clearly visible to the conductor.

Special Deals for Tourists

As a tourist, you can avail yourself of a few travel deals operated by Irish Rail. They include the following:

  • Trekker Four-Day Ticket – available only at train stations across the country. Four days of unlimited travel on a train in Ireland will cost you €88 from the date when the ticket is issued. This price is for one adult only. This is a pretty good deal given that you can hop on and off any train that you like with the same ticket.
  • Five-Day Explorer Ticket – this is for adults and children. Tickets must be purchased at any train station. You can avail of unlimited travel for 5 days out of 15 consecutive days on all Irish Rail lines. The cost per adult is €128, children €64.

Special Train Tours for Tourists

You may not know that Irish Rail offers special train tours of Ireland through its collaboration with Railtours Ireland – First Class , a tour operator that will get you to many of Ireland's popular destinations, perfect for travelers who don't want to drive.

irelandonabudget.com

Don't let the “First Class” title throw you off. Most of the tours are actually quite affordable.

Tours range from one-day tours to Bunratty Castle, the Cliffs of Moher and Galway, Bay to a 6-day tour of Ireland on the Emerald Pullman private train. Multi-day tours include accommodation, most meals and admission costs to the various attractions included in the tour.

Traveling in Northern Ireland by Train

Traveling in Northern Ireland is totally doable by train if you don't want to rent a car.

Translink operates five main routes, all of them coming out of Belfast.

a beach beside a town getting around Ireland

Trains run north to Coleraine, where the line splits (one making the short journey to the seaside town of Portrush) and the other going to Derry.

Two major commuter routes connect Belfast with the port of Larne in County Antrim and the bustling town of Bangor in County Down.

Another route heads south, accessing Newry and Portadown.

The journey from Belfast to Derry is totally worth it if only for the scenery alone. It takes about 2 hours and 12 minutes.

Be sure to sit on the right-hand side of the train.

As you get closer to Derry , you'll pass along the Foyle Estuary, underneath a tunnel with Mussenden Temple overhead, and coming out the other side, you'll get fabulous views of the ocean at Downhill Beach, one of the most beautiful in Northern Ireland and a filming location for the HBO series Game of Thrones .

a train in the snow getting around Ireland

You even get to the Giant's Causeway from Belfast's Lanyon Station by train.

Trains run every hour from Monday through Saturday and less frequently on Sundays. Once you reach the Coleraine Buscentre, you'll want to look for the bus (either 170 or 402) that will take you to the Giant's Causeway.

Be sure to sit on the left side of the bus for the best coastal views and to get a glimpse of the Dunluce Castle ruins.

Bus Transportation Across Ireland

If you want to see the more rural parts of Ireland without renting a car, it is best to take a bus.

Bus Eireann is where you be able to purchase your tickets.

a group of buses getting around Ireland

Unlike the rail system, Bus Eireann operates buses all across the country, reaching the most rural of places.

For tourists, an open return travel pass is a good idea.

A day return travel pass is valid for both outbound and return travel within a 24-hour period. A monthly travel pass can also be purchased, which is valid for outbound and return travel within one month.

Both types of tickets can be purchased directly from the bus driver.

In addition, Bus Eireann also offers a 10-journey travel pass, which can be purchased online and on the bus. It is not available at vending machines. Such a pass is valid for 10 journeys between two points, all taking place within 7 consecutive days. You can find more information about this pass and other travel options on the Bus Eireann website .

Other Bus Services in Ireland/Northern Ireland

There are several other bus services in addition to Bus Eireann that you should know about, including private bus companies that offer services to commuters, students, and tourists. They include the following.

This bus company operates up to 20 daily return routes originating in Dublin City Center, Dublin Airport, Cork, Galway, and Ballina in Co. Mayo, offering fares as low as €13 one way.

Facilities onboard include reclining seats, free WIFI, onboard charging facilities, and more.

Dublin Coach

This bus company promises to offer its passengers a luxury experience (all affordable, I might add) to various cities in Ireland.

Their Dublin to Waterford via Kilkenny route is one of the most popular. They also offer an airport service as well as a convenient service to various events across Ireland.

a double decker bus getting around Ireland

This bus company is part of Translink , which also oversees the train service in Northern Ireland. From Belfast, you can get any number of trains to other parts of the province.

Its Goldline Express service from Belfast to Derry is very popular, and it also operates a service between Belfast and Dublin Airport.

Traveling in Dublin Using the Bus and Train Services

Using public transportation in Dublin is recommended.

The most cost-effective way to do this is by purchasing a Leap Visitor Card .

buses and cars on a street in an airport Getting around Ireland

You’ll get unlimited travel on Airlink (bus transport from the airport to various points throughout Dublin), Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland Bus, the Luas, and the DART commuter rail system.

The Leap Card cannot be combined with any other hop-on hop-off tour bus deals unless you purchase the Freedom ticket from DoDublin.

The Leap Visitor Card can be used for 1, 3, or 7 days of unlimited rail travel but only in what is known as the “Short Hop Zone” (see graphic below).

irelandonabudget.com

That includes stations within the Dublin City area, from north to south and east to west.

The cost for 1 day/24 hours of unlimited travel is €8; €16 for 3 days/72 hours; and €32 for 7 days/168 hours.

Purchase it online or at the bus and travel information desk and at WHSmith in the T1 Arrivals area of Dublin Airport, as well as in the Spar shop at the T2 Arrivals area.

The card can also be purchased in various places in Dublin's city center.

Getting Around Dublin's Transportation Hub Using Free Apps

If you're tech-savvy enough and you use an Android, the free Citymapper transit app can help you navigate the city's buses and trains. It also helps users find cabs and bike services.

The TFI Live App from Transport for Ireland is available for free on the Apple app store and on the Google Play store. The app combines real-time information services from Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus, Go Ahead Ireland, Luas and Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail services.

The Moovit app is also useful when navigating Dublin's and Ireland's transportation systems. It is available on Apple and Android platforms.

Eurail Pass in Ireland – Is It Worth It?

If you plan to travel extensively throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland by train, then this is a good deal.

Traditionally, the Eurail pass , to be used only by non-European residents, has been popular with people in their teens and 20s.

If you are under 28, you can avail yourself of Eurail’s Youth Pass.

people standing beside a train getting around Ireland

If you happen to hold dual citizenship and like to travel around Europe with your EU passport, you can still avail of rail deals by purchasing a pass from Interrail at the same price as the Eurail pass.

The most popular deal is the 8-day unlimited travel pass for $345 for one adult. Travel on as many trains as you like over 8 consecutive days or use the travel days within the span of a month from the date you purchase the pass.

Other options include:

  • the 3-day pass for $182
  • the 4-day pass for $219

Taxsaver Commuter Ticket Scheme

Introduction, taxsaver tickets and temporary reduction in fares, how the taxsaver scheme works, ticket types and prices, how to apply, more information.

The Taxsaver Commuter Ticket Scheme reduces the cost of using public transport. Employers can make PRSI savings of up to 10.75%. Employees can save between 28.5% and 52% of travel costs due to tax, PRSI and USC savings. The ticket covers bus , rail , and the Luas tram system .

You can talk to your employer about participating in the scheme. Your employer will then apply and buy your ticket. Employees cannot apply for the scheme or buy the ticket themselves.

The Taxsaver scheme is run (in conjunction with the Revenue Commissioners ) by:

  • Bus Éireann
  • Approved transport providers

Employees can get tickets as part of their salary package (salary sacrifice) instead of an annual cash bonus or as a benefit-in-kind.

Taxsaver tickets are not subject to tax, PRSI or USC. Employees must only pay tax, PRSI, and USC on the ‘money’ portion of their salary. Employer PRSI is also calculated on the ‘money’ portion of the employee's salary.

There is a 20% average reduction in Taxsaver fares from 1 April 2022 to the end of 2024. This applies to all monthly and yearly tickets provided by Iarnród Éireann, Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus, Luas, and Go-Ahead Ireland.

See taxsaver.ie for more information or contact your employer to order a ticket.

Who can apply for a Taxsaver ticket?

Employees, including company directors, can participate in the TaxSaver scheme if their employer applies for and provides commuter tickets.

Contract between employer and employee

Employees who want to join the TaxSaver scheme select the ticket type they need. Employers and employees then sign a contract setting out the terms of the Taxsaver scheme. The Taxsaver contract (between the employer and employee) must be agreed upon and signed before the employer applies for a Taxsaver ticket. Both parties must review the conditions of the contract. For example, the contract should state what happens if an employee leaves the company before the ticket expiry date.

A signed Taxsaver contract usually lasts for 12 months. If, for example, an employee goes on holiday during that time, they cannot return the ticket, or get a refund for the time spent away and reclaim the ticket upon returning.

If an employee returns a ticket to an employer before the 12 months is up, they can rejoin the scheme again after the 12-months have expired. However, the company may get a refund for the portion of the year not used by the employee.

Tickets are strictly non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash benefits.

Once a contract between the employer and employee has been signed, the employer applies the tax conditions set out below and applies to the relevant transport provider.

Tax conditions

The terms and conditions of employment must be changed to refer to the Taxsaver ticket (to highlight that you are choosing a benefit instead of salary). The change must not be retrospective and must be in writing.

Employees cannot exchange the benefit for cash.

The choice to accept benefit instead of cash cannot be made more than once a year, and then only with the consent of the employer.

Taxsaver payment options

Employees can participate in the scheme in one of 3 ways:

Salary sacrifice

Employees can get TaxSaver commuter tickets as part of their basic salary package by choosing salary sacrifice.

Example of salary sacrifice

If the annual cost of a bus and rail ticket is €1,800 and an employee earns €30,000 per annum: Instead of buying the ticket for €1,800, the employee can agree to a ‘salary sacrifice’. So, their salary is reduced by €1,800 a year, or €34.62 per week, to cover the cost of the annual ticket (€1,800 divided by 52 weeks).

The employee will not be charged tax, PRSI, or USC on the portion of salary they sacrificed (€1,800). Instead, they only pay tax, PRSI and USC on €28,200. (€30,000 minus €1,800).

The employer will claim an expense for salary paid to employees.

If an assumed 10.75% rate applies, the employer PRSI would be €3,031.5. (10.75% of €28,200).

The employer will pay and claim €28,200 salary (plus employer PRSI) using salary sacrifice. This comes to €3,031.5 (this is where the employer saves), plus a deduction of €1,800 (the cost of the ticket).

The cost of the ticket is now regarded as an allowable expense for Section 118 (5A) of the Tax Consolidation Act 1997 as amended by Section 8 of the Finance Act 2005 .

Example without salary sacrifice

The employer will pay €30,000 in salary and claim an expense of €30,000 (plus the employer PRSI). The employer PRSI would be €3,225. (10.75% of €30,000).

As an alternative to salary sacrifice, an employer can offer employees TaxSaver commuter tickets instead of a cash bonus. As cash bonuses are taxed and commuter tickets are not, tickets provide better value to employees than cash bonuses.

Benefits-in-kind

A third way for employers and employees to benefit from the scheme is for employers to offer employees TaxSaver commuter tickets as a benefit-in-kind. For example, instead of a parking space at work, or as an incentive for an employee to stay with the company.

There are different types of monthly and annual tickets available. Tickets can also be used for personal travel outside of office hours.

Monthly tickets are valid for one calendar month and can be bought up to 2 weeks in advance. Annual tickets are valid for one year from the first day of any month and can be bought anytime.

Applying for the scheme

  • Employees choose the TaxSaver commuter ticket type.
  • The employer and employees sign a contract, subject to the rules of the scheme.
  • The employer applies the required Tax Conditions and registers with the public transport provider.
  • The employer makes a group application on behalf of employees by post, e-mail or online.
  • Companies must keep a receipt of purchases and a copy of the ticket for their tax records.

More information is available on Taxsaver.ie and from the following websites:

Information on commuter tickets may also be available from approved private operators.

TravelPass® FAQs

TravelPass lets you take your talk, text and data with you to 210+ countries and destinations for a set daily fee. For more information about using your device internationally, visit our Trip Planner .

TravelPass days on us

What is travelpass.

TravelPass lets you use your domestic talk, text and data* in 210+ countries and destinations outside the US for a set daily fee. Calling within the country you're visiting and back to the US are both included with this plan. *High speed data applies for the first 2 GB/day with 3G speeds thereafter. If more than 50% of your talk, text or data usage in a 60-day period is in Canada or Mexico, use of those services in those countries may be removed or limited.

How will I be charged for TravelPass?

You're only charged on days you use your device in a TravelPass country :

  • $5/day in Mexico and Canada. Remember, calling, texting and data use in Mexico and Canada are included at no extra cost in our Unlimited mobile plans.
  • $10/day in other TravelPass countries.
  • If you travel to 2 countries within a single 24-hour session or have a layover in a different country on your way to your final destination, you're still only charged for the first session.
  • There's no charge when you're in the US.

What will I be charged if I call another country other than the one I'm visiting or the US?

You will be charged as per your International Long Distance plan. If you do not have one, you will be charged international long distance pay per minute rates.

How does TravelPass work?

After you add TravelPass to your line:

  • A 24-hour TravelPass session starts automatically when you use your device in a TravelPass country (e.g., make or answer a phone call, send a text or use data).
  • You must turn on cellular data or data roaming when you go to the TravelPass country to use Travel Pass.
  • App content refreshing (e.g., Weather apps, Fitness Tracker, etc.)
  • Syncing (e.g., with email)
  • Device or app software updates
  • 2 hours after the session starts we send you a text letting you know when your 24-hour TravelPass session ends. Using your device after that time will start a new session.

Which countries can I call with TravelPass?

With TravelPass, you can call within the country you're visiting and you can call back to the US. If you want to call a different country, add an International Long Distance Plan to your line in My Verizon website or the My Verizon app. If you don't add an international long distance plan you'll be charged international long distance pay per minute rates for these calls.

Can I use Wi-Fi calling with TravelPass?

Wi-Fi calling isn't included with TravelPass. Wi-Fi calling to a country other than the US is charged international long distance rates regardless of whether or not you have an international travel plan.

How do I add TravelPass to my line?

You can add TravelPass to your line by:

  • Visiting the Trip Planner in My Verizon.
  • Texting the word Travel to 4004.
  • For TravelPass to work, you must turn on cellular data or data roaming when you go to the TravelPass country.

Do I have to opt in every day to use TravelPass?

No, you don't need to opt in every day. Add TravelPass once and it stays on your line so you're all set for your next trip. You're only charged for the days that you use your device in a TravelPass country . There's no charge when you're in the US.

How do I get more high speed data once I've reached my limit?

TravelPass gives you high-speed data for the first 2 GB/day. After that, you'll have unlimited data at 3G speeds for the remainder of your TravelPass session. To get more high speed data after you use the daily 2 GB:

  • This additional data costs $5 in Mexico and Canada, $10 in all other TravelPass countries.
  • Reply speed to get the added high speed data.

You can buy additional 2 GB of high speed data multiple times during a single 24-hour session. Note: Additional high speed data sessions are not available in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Bangladesh, Cyprus, Faroe Islands, Gabon, Georgia, Gibraltar, Greenland, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Monaco, Mongolia, Mozambique, Pakistan, French Polynesia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan.

How do I get TravelPass days on us?

You get TravelPass days on us when you have:

  • 5G Get More*, 5G Do More* – Get a TravelPass day each month.
  • Verizon Visa Card – You get 2 TravelPass days per calendar year if you apply and are approved for the Verizon Visa Card.

*No longer available to add to your account.

Can I see how many TravelPass days I have?

All of your TravelPass days are stored in your TravelPass bank. To view your TravelPass bank:

  • In the My Verizon app, tap the Menu icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  • Tap Verizon Up .
  • Scroll down to Manage your TravelPass days.

You’ll see the number of TravelPass days you have. You can tap Manage to see the expiration dates of each of your TravelPass days and/or transfer* them to another eligible line on your account. *TravelPass days earned with 5G Get More or 5G Do More phone plans can't be transferred to other lines.

How do I use my TravelPass days?

The TravelPass days assigned to your line are automatically used when you have TravelPass active on your line and travel outside the US to a TravelPass country. When you arrive at your international destination, you receive a text message telling you how many TravelPass days you have. Once all your TravelPass days are used, the normal TravelPass daily fee will be applied. Note: TravelPass days aren't eligible for use on cruise ships .

Can I transfer my TravelPass days to another line on my account?

TravelPass days you get through the Verizon Visa Card can be transferred to another eligible line on the account. The Account Owner or Account Manager can make the transfer through the My Verizon app:

  • Go to your TravelPass bank in the My Verizon app.
  • Tap Manage .
  • Tap Reassign next to the TravelPass day you want to transfer to another line.
  • Select the eligible line you want to reassign the TravelPass day to.

The TravelPass day is now assigned to that line. Note:

  • TravelPass days you receive from your Verizon Visa Card won't automatically be assigned. You can view them and assign them on the Use Rewards tab of the Verizon Up screen in the My Verizon app.
  • TravelPass days earned with 5G Get More* or 5G Do More* phone plans can't be transferred to other lines.

Do my TravelPass days expire?

Here's when your TravelPass days expire:

  • Verizon Visa Card: TravelPass days expire at the end of the calendar year.
  • 5G Get More* and 5G Do More* TravelPass days expire 12 months after you receive them.
