This was truly a wonderful adventure. It was educational, challenging and a good excuse to exercise in warm weather. The south coast road is now one of my top 10 all time rides. Lee Orphans organizational and leadership abilities and extensive experience from previous Cuba tours helped meet the daily surprises and challenges faced in the less traveled eastern parts of the country. Kudos to the unacknowledged co-tour leader, Beth. Her infectious, youthful, bubbly enthusiasm, adventurous spirit, helpful suggestions, friendliness, charm and exceptional tip handling were greatly appreciated. Her genuine interest in getting to know everyone led a diverse group of comrades to come together as a team. LOVE to do this again.

Cycling Cuba has been on our bucket list for years and when friends recommended this tour company at a New Years party we made a spur of the moment decision to go – and are glad that we did. Lee Orphan our tour guide, sent pre-tour info on what to bring, suggestions regarding money, maps that were very helpful. Along with his wife Beth, they were open, honest and generous with there time and experiences with the Cuban way of life, making us feel comfortable and appreciative of a country very different from our own. One of the initiatives they organized was donations for youth cycling groups – bike parts as well as bicycles were donated by participants.

The 3 Cuban tour staff were outstanding as well. Always helpful, smiling and going beyond what expectations I had.

Our whole experience was appreciated… I

Feel as if I have lived my dream! BB provides this unusual opportunity at reasonable prices allowing people like us to experience your country w hile doing what we love … bicycling!

Many thanks to both of you!

Popular destinations

For many travelers, Cuba offers several vacation destinations where you can enjoy white sand beaches, colorful landscapes and plenty of opportunities to relax and explore the outdoors. Cultural experiences are abundant too! Everything here drips with history and culture. Most of the country’s land has been recognized by UNESCO World Heritage for its beauty and historic significance. Vintage cars still cruise the streets, and the old buildings in Cuba’s colonial cities have the feel of a country frozen in time. Our cycling tours will take you to many of Cuba’s landmarks, but also quiet back roads, beaches, caves, Coffee farms and more. You will have a unique opportunity to engage with the local people and learn about their culture.

– CicloCuba mainly offers hybrid bicycles like the Specialized Sirrus, Globe, Vita and Crosstrail. Additionally, we offer Scott Speedster road bikes.

– CicloCuba doesn’t offer electric bicycles.

– The bicycles have 27 speeds, 9-speed cassettes with 3 chain rings.

– Our Specialized bikes come with 700 x 32 wheels. Scott road bikes have narrower 700 x 23 wheels. Inner tubes are mainly Presta valves and our hybrids can take up to a 38C tube.

– You can rent rear side bags (saddlebags), handlebar bags, trunk bags, Burley D’lite trailer, luggage trailer, trail a bike for children (10 – 13 years), locks, spare inner tubes, luggage storage.

– Bicycles don’t come with mirrors or any other accessories not specifically described as included with the rental.   – Our bikes come equipped with a rear carrier that will accept touring panniers, a water bottle cage (bottle not included) and we also offer helmets at no additional charge, but many guests travel with their own. We can install your personal saddle or pedals on our bikes if you prefer.

– Cell phone holder, small bottle of chain lubricant, multi-tool, spare inner tube, appropriate cycle clothing, solar protection, mosquito repellent, sunglasses, small air pump, bicycle water bottle or hydration pack, energy supplements, optional: SteriPEN or water filtration system.

– Roadside assistance is not available for independent rentals; CicloCuba only offers this service as part of Supported Independent tour packages arranged in advance. Our fleet of bicycles undergoes specialized maintenance after each rental. CicloCuba’s bicycles are high quality, and they’ve mostly been equipped with high-end tires, making them very resistant and appropriate for longer independent cycle touring journeys. In the event of a mechanical, you should have some basic mechanical skills, or be resourceful/self-sufficient enough to secure local transportation for you & your bike to return to CicloCuba for assistance in the event of a breakdown while rental equipment is under your care.

– CicloCuba only operates in Havana. For those intending to start their route in other cities such as Santiago de Cuba or Trinidad and return to Havana with the prevailing easterly winds, our advice is to pick up bicycles in Havana and then travel to your start point via the Viazul bus. The bus service requires advance booking and can only be paid online with a foreign-issued credit card. Viazul accepts bicycles for transport for a small supplement, payable locally, and will require riders to remove wheels and store the bicycle in the luggage compartment under the bus for the journey.

CicloCuba is primarily a rental outfitter. – We offer a number of free digital maps for multiple Havana-based day excursions, with routes based on beginning/ending at CicloCuba. You’re free to modify the start/end points to your accommodation if renting while based in Havana. -While CicloCuba doesn’t offer free tour itinerary planning services, digital maps are included with Supported Independent tour programs . -For those planning multi-day touring outside of Havana, we highly recommend installing the offline navigation application Maps.me and downloading the Cuba map in advance to mobile phones. It’s a wonderful resource that relies on GPS technology so a) doesn’t require data and b) can be used when cell phone signals are weak/non-existent.

– View our Terms & Conditions

– Visit CicloCuba and submit your completed reservation request form asap.

For those undertaking DIY trip planning we publish some bicycle-specific guide book links here to help orient visitors in advance in designing and independently planning their unsupported cycle tour itineraries & accommodations.

  • CicloCuba is based in Old Havana and we don’t have multiple rental outlets. Clients are normally outfitted at our facility, where we warehouse all of our equipment and tools. Itinerary Summary

maurice meet

On this cycling excursion through Western Cuba, tour leader Maurice combines two of his greatest passions: cycling and sharing his country with visitors.

“I’ve spent my whole life riding bikes. When I’m on two wheels I feel like a fish in water. I simply love this physical activity and it is always my preference to be out in the fresh air. When I combine guiding with one of my favorite hobbies I feel as though I’m not even working. The extra benefit is that I get to show you places we couldn’t see in a bus, showing you another side of Cuba that is hidden from most.”

Click the pictures below for information about each bike type.

Hybird Bike Option

Tour description

Pedal through the narrow alleys, cobbled lanes, and vast landscapes of Central Cuba on this tour that starts and ends in Havana. You’ll experience up close and personal the diversity in nature and architecture and that this jewel of and island has to offer with visits to five different provinces. You won’t just see Cuba, you’ll immerse yourself in its streets and its culture, accompanied by your English-speaking tour leader, bike mechanic, and support vehicle driver.

Our accommodation is in privately owned guesthouses that are typically run by local families. In Cuba this form of accommodation is the best way to get an insight into how the locals live – their food, culture, and it provides opportunities to interact with the family members. Recently comfort levels of this type of accommodation in Cuba have increased considerably and are highly rated by our travellers.

The tour starts and ends in Havana, so if you are interested you can add a few days before or after the tour to experience this unique city. Take our Havana Short Stay package or just add a couple of extra nights of accommodation and choose from our selection of Havana day tours with specialist guides.

Tour Summary

Itineray details, day 1 - arrive havana.

Welcome to Havana! Home of the most fascinating architecture and the famous seawall, el Malecón. Your included airport arrival transfer will take you to your guesthouse in Havana. The tour leader will conduct a welcome meeting at 6:00pm in the main guesthouse. Your optional snack kitty of US$20 will be collected. This money will be used to buy additional water, sodas, crackers, fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc for the road because it is difficult to buy food in remote areas. It is a good opportunity to learn about how the locals like to fuel themselves between meals and to try new foods. We offer this as a convenience, it is optional but those who don’t contribute will not have access. Due to the scarcity of snacks in Cuba, we also recommend you bring your own packaged snacks from home.

Row of blue Giant Brand bikes

Day 2 – Varadero

In the morning we meet the crew for bike fitting and mechanical check, then it’s off we go on our first riding adventure as we tour the modern part of Havana on two wheels. You’ll cycle through the neighborhoods Vedado, Nuevo Vedado, Havana Forest, and Miramar. We’ll stop for a photo op at the Revolution Square where the state buildings are adorned with metal sculptures of some of Cuba’s most important historical figures. We’ll have a delicious lunch at a paladar (private restaurant) in Old Havana before we stretch our legs on a two-hour walking tour of Old Havana four main plazas after which we will hop on our support vehicle and head to one of the top-rated beach destinations in the world, Varadero!

  • Included Activities: Cycling tour of Modern Havana (20km, elevation gain 132m), 2-hour walking tour of Old Havana
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Antique blue car outside of the Havana Capitol building

Day 3 – Matanzas

Rise and shine for an early 30 min drive to Camarioca, just outside of Matanzas, where we start our first cycling route. We ride to Matanzas on a lightly undulating road in good condition. Matanzas is known by many monikers such as the “Athens of Cuba” “Venice of Cuba” or “City of Bridges”, it is rich in art and music heritage and is birthplace of many of Cuba’s most important cultural figures as well as Afro-Cuban history and culture. This hidden gem is often neglected by tourists in favor of the crystalline waters of nearby Varadero, we explore its treasures of everyday life on bike tour though the city.  Afternoon is at your leisure, you can enjoy the sun and sand, bike around on your own, or watch the sunset on the beach.

  • Included Activities: Cycling for 40km (elevation gain: 138m), Bike tour of Matanzas

cycling group gathered in front of tour bus

Day 4 – Santa Clara

We hit the pedals early to our next destination Santa Clara. The cycling route is mostly flat through agricultural fields, small villages, and interesting cities such as Cardenas and Colon. Santa Clara is the city of Che, as here is where the national hero is laid to rest near a gigantic bronze statue of his likeness. Another city overlooked by tourists, Santa Clara is unapologetically edgy, its large student population means that subcultures are well-represented here. It is a city of creativity, and rebellion. Today dinner is included.

  •   Included Activities: Cycling for 50km (elevation gain 156m), entrance to the Che Guevara Museum and Memorial.
  •  Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Large bronze Che Guevara statue

Day 5 – Trinidad

Make sure you fuel up with a good breakfast this morning as we will be uphill riding for much of today’s route. We cycle early to the mountains of Guamuaya, with an average incline of 4% during 10km. We’ll meet a farmer family in Jibacoa who will prepare a farm to fork meal while we rest our legs and enjoy the conversation. After lunch we take our support vehicle to colonial jewel Trinidad where we’ll do an orientation walking tour in the historic center. For many visitors to Cuba, Trinidad is their standout favourite destination. No other colonial city in Cuba is so well preserved, and the local residents are extremely friendly and festive. Trinidad is steeped in religiosity, none the least of which is Santeria, which is one of several Afro-Cuban religions. After the tour the rest of the evening is free. If you have some excess energy to burn, we recommend a salsa lesson followed by a night of dancing in arguably one of the best places for nightlife in Cuba.

  • Included Activities: Cycling for 30km (elevation gain 390m), orientation walking tour in Trinidad
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, farm lunch in Jibacoa, Dinner

Colonial plaza in Trinidad Cuba

Day 6 – Cienfuegos

With the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea at our side, we ride along the coast from Trinidad to Cienfuegos, or “The Pearl of the South”. Expect the terrain to be slightly undulating in the first 5km, then it flattens out with the sea to the left and mountains to the right for about 40km. The last 20k will be hilly. We’ll take the rest of the journey in the support vehicle. French inspired boulevards and architecture await you in the elegant and peaceful city of Cienfuegos. After an orientation tour of the center of the city, around Parque Jose Marti, you are free to explore on your own. Don’t miss some of Cuba’s most beautiful buildings on Punta Gorda. There is nothing like an ice-cold beer at the Yacht Club or the astounding Palacio del Valle while watching the sun set.

  •  Included Activities: Cycling for 60km (elevation gain 356m). Orientation walking tour of Cienfuegos.
  •  Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Classic car in front of Palacio Ferrer in Cienfuegos

Day 7- Havana

We start our last day of the tour with a ride in the support vehicle to Bay of Pigs, site of the infamous U.S. invasion during the JFK presidency. We’ll learn the Cuban side to this story with a cycle on flat terrain to the Museum of the Invasion. Afterwards we’ll have an hour to enjoy the beach snorkeling or swimming and lunch on the road. Back in Havana for our bittersweet farewell dinner (not included). Who could say good-bye to Cuba without a final night out for music and mojitos? Perhaps at the Buena Vista Social Club or the Time Magazine honored Fabrica de Arte Cubano, art and nightlife megaplex (optional).

  •   Included Activities: Cycling for 30km (elevation gain 64m), entry to the Museum of the Invasion

A cenote in Bay of Pigs (Playa de Giron)

Day 8 – Departure Day

Today you can depart at any time, there are no activities or cycling today. We suggest you stay longer to enjoy the many wonderful restaurants, museums, and galleries that Havana has to offer. Your departure transfer is not included but a taxi can easily be arranged with your casa host.

  •  Included Meals: Breakfast

Summary of Travel Times (in Vehicle)

Frequently asked questions, how difficult is this tour.

This tour is best for medium to highly experienced cyclists who are comfortable cycling 20-40km (12.5-25 miles) every other day. A person who cycles frequently should find this tour enjoyable, rather than overly strenuous. However, you must be prepared for the year round heat, humidity, and hills. The support vehicle is always available.

What Will the Weather Be?

Cuba is hot year round but in January and February, there are cold fronts and temperatures in some areas have dropped as low as the mid-40s. May starts the rainy season which lasts through November, but downpours happen throughout the year, so you will need to bring rain protection, and sun protection. Summers are very hot and humid, August in particular is very humid although humidity exists year round.

Should I Bring My Own Pedals/Saddle?

If you are particular about these things you should bring them. The bike mechanic will have no problem installing them for you.

Are Clip-in Pedals Available?

No, and although you are able to bring your own pedals, the guides and past travellers do not recommend clip pedals. The terrain is mostly flat, and regular shoes are more comfortable for exploring during the stops.

What if I Am Traveling with Someone who Doesn't Cycle?

While cycling is a fundamental part of this tour and is central to the experience, travellers who don't want to cycle can ride in the support vehicle. There will still be fun and interesting experiences to enjoy, but with the understanding that they should not expect special arrangements to be made for them.

What is the Terrain Like?

The itinerary describes the terrain for each ride, you can also see the cycling maps here .

What Else Should I Bring?

See the pack list below.

Are E-Bikes Available?

We have E-bikes available upon request. Please be aware that there is a very limited supply of these bikes in Cuba. If you are a moderately experienced cyclist, we encourage you to do the tour with the standard bike, and rest on the support vehicle when needed.

To secure an e-bike for the tour : You will need to pay the US$338 amount in full when paying your tour deposit.

Please read the Terms and Conditions clause on damages (number 29).

See the type of e-bike we use here .

Is This Tour Allowed for US Travellers?

This tour supports small privately owned businesses and aside from cycling, will give you many opportunities to engage with locals. Our accommodations, restaurant choices, and optional activities are all selected to give an authentic Cuban experience and have a positive economic and social impact on the communities we visit. As long as the traveller chooses appropriate cultural activities during their free time (to maintain the required "full schedule" of activities) this tour complies with the rules for the general license under Support for the Cuban People 515.574. havana bike tours

We start the day with a bike fitting outside of the Montehabana Hotel in Playa district (Calle 70 & 5a, Miramar, Playa) – here we’ll make sure your bike is the correct size, supply you with a helmet, introduce the rest of the group, and we’ll have a cycle safety briefing with the tour guide.

The first section of the ride involves following the coastal road down past the Karl Marx theatre and to ‘La Puntilla’ where the Almendares River meets the sea.   We meander up towards ‘El Bosque de Habana’ the green and mysterious woods whose beauty takes many visitors to Havana by surprise.   After stopping for a breather and to take pictures of the peculiar trees, we set off again and now find ourselves in Vedado district, home to some beautiful residential architecture and Cemetery to arrive at the iconic Revolution Square, a must-see destination for anyone interested in politics or Cuba’s revolutionary past.

Continuing through Vedado we arrive outside the emblematic Hotel Nacional, the flagship hotel for visiting dignitaries and iconic silhouette on the city’s skyline.   We continue in the Centro Habana district and the scenery changes with the roads narrowing and the bustling street-life becoming more evident.   We stop for a fruit juice in a typical Cuban barrio before cycling the final leg of the ride along ‘ Paseo de Prado ’ and ending next to the Bay of Havana.   Here we’ll leave the bike beyond to explore part of the Old Town on foot. Our guide will give a historical overview of the main plazas lasting approx. 1 hour.   The tour ends in Plaza de la Catedral.

Weekly tours on Wednesdays and private ones can be arranged.

Tailor-made Bike Tours

Cuba is an ideal destination for bike tours, with varied landscapes and a rich culture that can be best experienced on a bike. Bike tours in Cuba are usually done on carefully planned routes that cover both urban and rural areas of the country. Here are some common places and itineraries for bike tours in Cuba:

Havana and Surroundings: Havana is the starting point for many bike tours in Cuba. Routes typically include a tour of the city’s old town, as well as visits to the city’s iconic sites like the Malecón and Plaza de la Revolución. It’s also possible to take excursions outside the city, such as to the beautiful Playa del Este.

Viñales Valley: Located in the province of Pinar del Río, the Viñales Valley is known for its stunning natural landscapes and tobacco production. Bike tours through the valley usually include visits to tobacco plantations and caves, as well as a stop in the town of Viñales.

Cuba’s North Coast: Cuba’s North Coast features stunning beaches and small fishing villages. Bike tours usually follow the coast from Havana to Varadero, with stops in places like Matanzas and Jibacoa.

Sierra Maestra: The Sierra Maestra is a mountain range that covers much of the province of Granma. Bike tours through this area may be more demanding, but offer impressive panoramic views and the opportunity to visit historical sites like the Turquino National Park and the Casa de Fidel Museum.

Trinidad and the South Coast: Trinidad is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in Latin America and a popular spot for bike tours. Tours usually include visits to the city’s cobbled streets, as well as excursions to nearby Playa Ancón and other places along Cuba’s south coast.

In summary, bike tours in Cuba offer a unique opportunity to explore the island in an active and authentic way. From historic Havana to the stunning natural landscapes of the Sierra Maestra, there’s a wide variety of places and routes to choose from to satisfy the tastes and abilities of any cyclist.

Group Bike Tours

There are many reasons why a group bicycle tour in Cuba is an excellent option for cycling and adventure enthusiasts. Here are some of them:

1. Share the experience: A group bicycle tour allows you to share the experience with other travelers with similar interests. Meeting other cyclists and sharing the emotions of the group adventure creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship that makes the trip even more special.

2. Safety: On a group bicycle tour, you travel with a guide and support team, which means that there is always help and safety available in case of an emergency or need. Guides know the routes, places, and local culture well, which means you can travel with peace of mind.

3. Travel without worries: By joining a group bicycle tour, you can forget about the worries of planning the itinerary, organizing accommodation, transportation, and meals. The group bicycle tour takes care of all the details so you can focus on enjoying the trip.

4. Discover off-the-beaten-path places: When traveling on a group bicycle tour, you can discover off-the-beaten-path places that may be difficult to find or visit on your own. Local guides can take you to authentic and unique places that are not in tourist guides.

5. An authentic experience: By traveling by bicycle, you can experience Cuban culture and daily life in a more authentic way. By traveling on rural roads and visiting small towns, you can interact with local people and discover the real Cuba.

In summary, a group bicycle tour in Cuba is an excellent option for those seeking an authentic and safe experience in a beautiful and diverse country. Furthermore, the opportunity to share the experience with other travelers creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship that makes the trip even more special.
