large red stone home styled like a castle

Lambert Castle

Editor’s Note : Lambert Castle is currently closed due to a planned renovation in 2020. We will update this feature when they reopen. Location: 3 Valley Road, Paterson Details: Located on Garret Mountain overlooking Paterson, this beautiful estate resembles an old English castle. English immigrant Catholina Lambert made his fortune in the silk industry, then built the castle in the late 19th century. The castle houses a large collection of American and European art, much to the delight of his many prominent visitors. Lambert’s son Walter later sold the castle to the city of Paterson in 1925. Since then, extensive renovations have restored the building to its former glory. Every November, you can visit the Lambert Castle Holiday Boutique to shop for festive decor, crafts, jewelry and more. Why I like it: Members of the Passaic County Historical Society receive free admission; otherwise, adults pay just $5 and children ages 5-17 are $3. More info: Visit the website or you can click here to call .

Ringwood Manor

Location: 1304 Sloatsburg Road, Ringwood Details: Ringwood Manor served as a summer home to ironmasters Peter Cooper and Abram S. Hewitt during the Gilded Age. Though building began in 1810, the final phase did not complete until 1910. Inside the manor, you’ll find neo-classical decor along with French designs and furniture. Each December, the estate is open to the public during the Victorian Christmas weekends. It then closes in January and February before opening again with limited hours in March. Meanwhile, you can take a guided tour Wednesdays through Sundays from April to November at select times; of course, it’s best to call ahead to confirm availability. Why I like it: Free, self-guided tours of the the estate’s carriage barn take place every weekend from May – October between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. More info: Visit the website or you can click here to call .

Shippen Manor

Location: 8 Belvidere Avenue, Oxford Details: The Shippen Manor has over 250 years of history inside its walls. The Georgian-style home is made from local stone and features three chimneys. A tour of the family dining room shows a portrait of original owner Dr. William Shippen II, a famous local surgeon, above the fireplace. You can learn more about Shippen Manor through our Jersey Through History series . Why I like it: Seasonal events such as candlelight tours in the winter and lawn concerts during the summer make Shippen Manor a year-round family destination. More info: Visit the website or you can click here to call .

Skylands Manor

Location: 5 Morris Road, Ringwood Details: Designed in the mid-1920s by American architect John Russell Pope, this Tudor Revival mansion was made to appear centuries old. The building has a weathered stone facade and its slate roof contains ripples and sags. Additionally, the dining room’s oak paneling comes from an English seacoast town and the breakfast room is lined with fine green Italian marble. Skylands Manor also notably sits within the expansive New Jersey Botanical Garden. Guided tours of the manor house are available on select Sundays throughout the year. Why I like it: After your tour of the Manor, visit the free Botanical Garden that’s open all year. More info: Visit the website or you can click here to call .

Central Jersey

white mansion with large columns and two wings

Drumthwacket

Location: 354 Stockton Street (Route 206), Princeton Details: Drumthwacket has been the official residence of New Jersey’s governor since 1981. The home was built in 1835 by Charles Smith Olden, who later became the state’s 28th governor. It sits near the site of the Battle of Princeton , a significant battle during the American Revolution. Drumthwacket is open most Wednesdays at 1:00 pm for guided public tours, except during the holidays. The home also hosts an Annual Spring Carnival to provide a day of fun and games for children with special needs and their families. Why I like it: Students can use the online student portal to play games, view an interactive map of New Jersey and learn more about local inventors. More info: Visit the website or you can click here to call .

Liberty Hall Museum

Location: 1003 Morris Avenue, Union Details: Liberty Hall was built in 1772 for William Livingston, New Jersey’s first elected governor. (And also a signer of the Constitution.) Originally a 14-room Georgian-style home, Liberty Hall is now a 50-room Victorian-style mansion. The museum also houses ceramics, textiles, toys, furniture, and tools owned by seven generations of the Kean and Livingston families. They are open Wednesday through Sunday from April to December, with limited hours in March. Liberty Hall closes during January and February, except to group reservations of 10 or more. Check the website calendar for special events such as afternoon tea, a Dr. Seuss birthday celebration and more. Why I like it: You won’t want to miss the museum’s rare 1796 Madeira wine collection. A staff member actually found the collection during a recent renovation. More info: Visit the website or you can click here to call .

Jersey Shore

green trim red roof tall mansion

Emlen Physick Estate

Location: 1048 Washington Street, Cape May Details: The Emlen Physick Estate is a glimpse into New Jersey’s Victorian past, as seen through its design and decor. Emlen Physick Jr., along with his widowed mother and maiden aunt, moved in when it was completed in 1879. The stately grounds include Hill House and the Carriage House, as well as the Carroll Gallery, which often features new art. Special guided tours are available for kids (with an adult present). Families can also explore Physick Estate on a fun and educational scavenger hunt any day of the week! Likewise, spring and summer events include the Sip Into Spring Festival and the Craft Beer, Music & Crab Festival. Why I like it: Into ghosts? The Emlen Physick Estate is Cape May’s original haunted house, with many spirits said to roam the halls. More info: Visit the website or you can click here to call .

South Jersey

faded red brick mansion

Batsto Mansion

Location: Batsto Road, Batsto Details: Generations of ironmasters lived in the 32-room Batsto Mansion, located in the center of Batsto Village. The mansion was renovated in the late 1800s to reflect the Italianate style of architecture. Fourteen rooms of the mansion are currently open for the public to tour, including the parlors, dining room, library, and bedrooms. Guided tours of the mansion cost $3 per adult and $1 per child. Why I like it: Walk through the rest of Batsto Village to make a day of it. See the remains of the ghost town, including a post office, library, general store, and other homes. More info: Visit the website .

White Hill Mansion

Location: 217 Fourth Street, Fieldsboro Details: In 1757, merchant Robert Field inherited land from his father and built what is now White Hill Mansion. Over the years it passed through the hands of several different families, and ended up as an upscale German restaurant from 1923 through 1972. But when these owners intended to demolish the home, the borough of Fieldsboro purchased the property. Now it is a historic landmark, and archaeological digs have turned up over 30,000 artifacts and evidence of Native American occupation on the land. See the website for tour dates as well as special yoga events. Why I like it: During the popular Ghost Hunt, guests tour the mansion for five hours in the dark. Be sure to bring any ghost-seeking equipment you have! More info: Visit the website .

8 South Jersey house tours to get you into the holiday spirit

  • Updated: Nov. 15, 2015, 1:00 p.m. |
  • Published: Nov. 15, 2015, 12:00 p.m.
  • Kelly Roncace | For NJ.com

Most people decorate for the holidays with a tree and lights and red and green splashes everywhere.

But when you're opening your house to several hundred guests, you start planning for it during the summer.

This holiday season, Patty Grenier and her husband Fran will open their home for the Woodstown  by Candlelight house tour for the fourth time.

"In the past, we participated every other year with a cluster of neighbors," Grenier said. "It's too much to do every year and more people come through when there are several homes open close by."

The tour committee begins organizing the event in August, and Grenier begins preparing her home for display in early November.

"Last weekend, I put up my largest tree and bought replacement lights for all the window candles," she said. "Hopefully, this weekend we will get the outside lights up and another tree finished. Then it's just doing a little bit every day."

Grenier said she will have a total of four Christmas trees in her home by the time the tour rolls around.

"I usually put our largest tree in the living room, a smaller tree in the family room, and a small, live, tree in the dining room," she said. "This year, we're hosting some puppies from our Seeing Eye puppy club, so I'll put up a tree in our sunroom, too."

Because the dogs also love the holidays.

"Our whole first floor is open to walk through -- foyer, living room, family room, sunroom, dining room, kitchen, and bath," Grenier said. "Many people ask why the upstairs isn't open. That's where we hide all the clutter."

Getting her house ready for the Woodstown by Candlelight house tour "really is a lot of work," she said.

"Especially working full time. But I love to do it and the reward is my home is completely decorated and clean so December is more relaxed," she said.

And opening her doors to the tourists is like hosting a big holiday get-together.

"Truthfully, I consider them guests rather than strangers," she said. "Sometimes it's more like a reunion with seeing high school classmates and old friends and neighbors."

This year's Woodstown by Candlelight is from 6 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 4, and will feature 13 homes, a craft fair, and many special musical events including the Woodstown High School concert choir, the Men's Chorus of Morningstar Baptist Church, and Recycled Brass Tuba Quartet.

The craft fair will be at the Woodstown Borough Hall on West Avenue from 4 to 10 p.m.

Exhibitors include Mary Crevino of Sweet Mary's Chocolates, Leighton's Country Shop, and Lilla Rose Hair Clips.

Tickets are $15 or $12 in advance for adults, $6 for students from kindergarten to grade 12, and children 5 and younger are free.

For more information, visit www.woodstownbycandlelight.org .

These North Jersey historic holiday home tours will transport you to Christmas past

house tours nj

Have you ever wanted to be transported back to the Victorian era to see what the holiday season was like? What about the roaring '20s?

Now you can: The beloved historical sites of North Jersey are decorated from head to toe for the holiday season. For a limited time, these mansions, castles and museums will be adorned with festive décor and open to the public to explore.

Don't miss out on the fun. Here are four historic holiday open houses that you can take a stroll through this season.

Victorian Christmas at Ringwood Manor

For a peek into a classic Victorian-style Christmas, look no further than Ringwood Manor. Located in Ringwood State Park, the historic site dates back to 1807 and was home to a number of ironmasters from the colonial period through the early 20th century.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

During the holiday season each year, the first floor of Ringwood Manor is decorated in Victorian-era décor by the Women's Club of West Milford. Each room is decorated differently and the themes of the rooms change each year, such as vintage clothing displays or a room with décor made out of decks of cards.

(The video above is from the 2019 version.)

Self-guided tours of Ringwood Manor's holiday furnishings will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sundays from Dec. 1 to Dec. 17. Tickets can be purchased at the door, and are $5 for children ages 5 to 12, $8 for seniors and students, as well as $10 for adults.

Go: 1304 Sloatsburg Road, Ringwood, 973-962-2240; ringwoodmanor.org/Victorian .

Skylands Manor Holiday Open House

Located within the Botanical Gardens of New Jersey, Skylands Manor was designed in the 1920s by American architect John Russell Pope with a Tudor-revival architecture style. Now, for the 34th year, Skylands Manor will be covered in festive glitz and glam for the holiday season.

For this year's theme, " Holiday in the Highlands ," each room of the manor has been elaborately designed and decorated by various volunteer groups to incorporate grand Christmas trees, unique wreaths and holiday flowers galore. Tours of the manor's holiday set-up will only be open for one weekend, Nov. 30 to Dec. 3.

Daytime, self-guided tours will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3; tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for children ages 6 to 12 and $10 for students and seniors. An evening reception will take place on Dec. 2 from 6 to 8 p.m., including wine, light refreshments and valet parking; tickets are $50 for New Jersey Botanical Gardens members and $55 for other guests. Tickets must be purchased over the phone, or online.

Go: 5 Morris Road, Ringwood, 973-962-9534; njbg.org/event/holiday-open-house .

Essex County Historic Holiday House Tour

Each year, Essex County hosts a one-weekend-only historic house tour . This year, the self-guided tour features 11 homes and historic sites decorated for the holiday season, with each location offering entertainment, refreshments and educational opportunities.

Among the sites on this year's tour is Kingsland Manor in Nutley, a 1700s brownstone on park-like grounds that overlooks a pond and waterfalls. In Verona, a medieval-style mansion known as Kips Castle will feature a 1920s-era Christmas theme, including a dining room set for a holiday feast and a parlor filled with ribbons and holiday greenery.

The house tour is only open on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3. Tour hours vary by location, so visit the house tour's website for the complete list of locations and times.

Deck the Halls at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum and Acorn Hall Museum

For one day only, guests will be able to "Deck the Halls" and take a walk through Christmas past in Morristown. The Deck the Halls event features stops at two Morristown historic sites: the Acorn Hall Museum and the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum. From holiday music on a 1873 Chickering grand piano to Thomas Nast's famous Christmas scenes, it's sure to be a day full of historic holiday festivities.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 2. Tickets are $30 per person — which includes entry to both sites − and can be purchased online or in person.

Go: 45 Macculloch Ave., Morristown, 973-538-2404 & 68 Morris Ave., Morristown, 973-267-3465; maccullochhall.org/upcoming-events/deck-the-halls .

RELEASE: Gottheimer Celebrates Expanded Investment for Gateway Program, Tours Tonnelle Avenue Site

Highlights key role in securing investment for gateway and public transit projects across jersey.

house tours nj

Above: Gottheimer tours the Tonnelle Avenue construction site.

NORTH BERGEN, NJ  —   Yesterday, June 11, 2024, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) celebrated a new federal investment secured for the Gateway Program by visiting the Tonnelle Avenue site. This site will receive federal investment to  construct a new roadway bridge , clearing the way for the Northeast Corridor rail line. It will play a key role in the Gateway Program, ensuring millions of people have access to better mass transit.

Gottheimer has been a champion of the  Gateway Program , which will expand and modernize the Northeast Corridor rail line between Newark, New Jersey, and New York City. Millions of people rely on this rail line every year to travel across the Northeast Corridor.

As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, Gottheimer helped claw back billions of dollars — without raising taxes — in federal investment for key parts of the Gateway Program, including for the Hudson River Tunnel and the Dock Bridge over the Passaic River.

“After years of hard work, there’s nothing better than seeing federal investment at work to help our families with faster, safer, and more reliable commutes,”  said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5).   “That’s why I fought so hard to help write, pass, and negotiate the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, to claw back dollars to Jersey to build the Gateway Train Tunnel.”

Gottheimer was joined at the Tonnelle Avenue site by Gateway Program Co-Chair Balpreet Grewal-Virk, Chief Executive Officer Kris Kolluri, Chief Program Officer Eric Daleo, Chief Administrative Officer Robert Hickman, Deputy Chief Program Officer Megan Strickland, Chief of Staff and Policy Advisor Madeleine McDonnell, and Senior Advisor for Program Management, Reporting & Controls Don Blazina.

Ben Affleck’s love don’t cost a thing — except a tour.

Jennifer Lopez reportedly canceled her “This Is Me… Live | The Greatest Hits” tour in order to “save” her and the actor’s “doomed” marriage .

The singer’s friends told the Daily Mail Thursday that Lopez, 54, is “willing to make any sacrifice, including giving up being J.Lo” and “dimming her shine.”

One pal claimed, “She doesn’t want to be divorced. She doesn’t want to end up like Madonna — on her own at 60. She can’t bear the idea of failure.”

The report also pointed out that tickets had been 78 percent sold out after an initial struggle to sell them , with a source saying, “If [she] had done this [cancellation] early on, then it would have been about ticket sales because they did start slow, but it was not.”

The “heartsick and devastated” performer, whose planned Las Vegas residency is also in jeopardy , made her tour cancellation announcement last week, with Live Nation reps blaming her step back on spending time with “children, family and close friends.”

In addition to the reveal, Lopez has been “toning down her look … to try to hang onto the marriage,” the Daily Mail’s insider alleged.

The friend pointed out that the actress even “lets” Affleck, 51, smoke , adding, “She won’t give up this relationship.”

Lopez’s rep has yet to return Page Six’s request for comment.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck

Speculation began swirling in May that Lopez and Affleck were headed for divorce nearly two years after their Las Vegas wedding , with the “Gigli” co-stars living in separate homes .

While Lopez has yet to directly comment on the rumors, she did shut down a bold reporter who asked about her marital woes.

“You know better than that,” the “Let’s Get Loud” singer said during her “Atlas” press tour.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck

Although Affleck skipped out on both of her Netflix movie’s premieres to film “The Accountant 2,” the pair have since put on a united front with multiple outings.

Not only did they spend Sunday at his son Samuel’s basketball game , but they also made a joint appearance at his daughter Violet’s graduation party .

However, Lopez left on her own after just one hour.

Jennifer Lopez

The Grammy nominee has been married three times before, to Ojani Noa, Cris Judd and Marc Anthony.

Lopez also made headlines for ending her high-profile engagement to Alex Rodriguez before reconciling her romance with Affleck .

As for the “Gone Girl” star, he and Jennifer Garner separated in 2015 after 10 years of marriage and three children .
