India Tours & Vacations

Travellers looking at a shrine carving with their guide in Delhi, India

There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.

Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is. Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs

India is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practising Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioural standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Geography and environment

India shares land borders with   Bangladesh ,   China , Pakistan,   Nepal ,   Myanmar   and   Bhutan , and also has wide stretches of coastline along the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. As the seventh largest country in the world, India is home to a variety of terrains - the Himalayas of the north, the deserts and plains of the west, the fertile waterways of the south and the hills and forests of the east. Development is occurring at a rapid pace, with India's large, sprawling cities consisting of everything from five star hotels to shanty towns, and with modern malls and cinemas sitting comfortably alongside bazaars and street food vendors. A trip through India will reveal a diverse range of landscapes, villages, cities and environments.

History and government

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

Recent history

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernization and globalization. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Festivals and events

Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervour of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:

Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of coloured powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolour Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colourful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colourful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejewelled females take the chance to let their hair down.

Is tipping customary in India?

While travelling through India, on a tour or otherwise, it’s expected one would tip porters, drivers, restaurant staff and other service workers given the low wages they earn.

What is the internet access like in India?

Internet access is generally very good in India, with most cafes, restaurants and accommodations offering free wi-fi, even in the more rural areas. There is also good phone coverage for data use if you choose to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected for the duration of your India tour.

If you do wish to purchase a local SIM in India, make sure your phone has been unlocked before your tour begins. There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travellers. You’ll need to a copy of your passport and visa to pick up a SIM, and the process can sometimes be a hassle, but rates in India are very affordable given the competition.

Can I use my mobile while in India?

Yes, you’ll be able to use your mobile phone while on an India tour, but only if you have activated global roaming or purchased a local SIM card.

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travellers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travellers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now – let your inner child rejoice!

Are credit cards widely accepted in India?

Credit cards are being accepted an increasing number of cafes, shops, restaurants and hotels in India, with Mastercard and Visa being the most common. That said, cash is still king, especially outside of cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

What is ATM access like in India?

ATMs are widespread across India in both cities and smaller towns. Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus and Maestro are the most commonly accepted cards, but of those Visa and Mastercard are more likely to have success. The daily withdrawal limit differs from bank to bank.

What is the weather like in India?

The weather in India varies from region to region, but it’s generally safe to say that December–February sees dry, cooler weather before the heat intensifies from March–May. June, July and August are the monsoon months, though the amount of rain differs across the country, while October, September and November see rainfall ease once more.

Is India safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The majority of Indian society is still conservative, and while most travellers will have a welcoming and hospitable experience, discretion is still advised for LGBTQIA+ travellers, particularly in more remote towns and villages which may be more conservative. The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is India accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in India

What you decide to pack and wear in India will depend on where you are and what time of year it is. The weather across India usually follows the monsoon cycle, so it’s quite easy to plan what to pack when it comes to rain, but temperatures will vary quite a bit from the north to the south.

Zip around the big cities of India by auto rickshaw.

What kind of accommodation will I be staying in?

Travelling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavour to provide travellers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When travelling with us in India you may find yourself staying in a homestay.

Make new friends, feast on authentic home cooking and receive kind hospitality while staying with friendly families in India.

What is it like travelling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or you’re about to embark on your first trip, travelling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), travelling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

A few good books

The Indian rail network chuffs for 65,000 kilometres around India. A geographically large company with relatively slow transport systems, a few books can keep you entertained between admiring scenery.

Light and modest clothing

Though India does get cooler than most expect, many parts of the year are intensely hot. Pack sheer, light clothing that covers you right to the ankles, wrists and neck so that you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Medication for stomach upsets

Though our India group tours will see you largely protected from unsanitary food or water, it is still handy to keep a supply of medication on hand. Charcoal tablets can be taken daily as a preventive measure to ensure any nasties are quickly expelled from your system.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Wet wipes and hand sanitiser

True to its reputation, India can be a hot and messy place. Pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser to ensure you feel fresh when you're on the go.

More information about India

A holiday to India  is a journey through a complex history, a colorful culture and a varied landscape which stretches from the snowy caps of the mighty  Himalayas  to the luscious coast of the abundant  Indian   Ocean . The  6th  largest economy in the world and home to a staggering  3 billion  people,  India  holds within its territory some of the worlds most mythical and iconic sights and cities such as the eternal  Taj Mahal ,  Varanasi, the Ganges River,  the lush beaches of  Goa  and  Rishikesh,  the world centre of  yoga,  not to mention the lively capital of  Delhi . This vast country shares borders with  China, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh  and  Myanmar,  and its immense coastline, stretching for more than  7,500 kilometers , sits on the  Indian Ocean,  the  Bay of Bengal  and the  Arabian Sea.  Today,  India  is divided into  29 states  and  7 union territories.

Nature in India

Lovers of nature are spoilt for choice when they take a  tour in India . With habitat zones ranging from  tropical rainforests  to  alpine forests  and  deserts ,  India  is home to a plethora of endemic plant and wildlife species, the former of which contributes to its strong culture of herbal medicine and  Ayurvedic  practice.  India  is famed for its varied and exotic wildlife including  Bengal tigers, lions, Indian  and  white giraffe ,  leopards  and  snow leopards , the majestic  Indian elephant  and the mighty  Indian rhinoceros.

The country’s fantastically diverse wildlife is preserved in more than 120 national parks, although it is common to see wild animals roaming the city streets. Supporting such a wide array of wildlife, India is home to a range of geographical regions and landscapes, the most iconic being the  Thar Desert , the snowy  Himalayas , the lush tropical backwaters of  Kerala  and the unbelievable metropolises of  Mumbai, Kolkata,  and  Delhi.

History of India

With a history as vast as its size and stretching back as far as  5 millennia , a  package holiday in India  will open your eyes to a fascinating mix of traditions, cultures, and religions. Often called the ‘oldest religion in the world’,  Hinduism  is the largest religion in  India,  and across the centuries it has laid the foundations for the country’s culture and way of life. It’s founding texts, known as the ‘ vedas’ , were composed in  India  between  2000  and  5000 BC , marking the beginning of  Vedic Culture , a key period in the northwest territories of the country.

During these ancient times in the central  Ganges Plain , the territory was divided into  16 kingdoms,  known as  Mahajanapagas.  By the  4th  and  5th centuries , the Golden Age of the  Gupta Empire  had unified much of the  Indian Subcontinent  and encouraged progress through a practice of  Hinduism  based on devotion rather than ritual which prompted a proliferation of arts, architecture, and  Sanskrit  literature. As the centuries moved forward so  Muslim  dynasties and the famous  Mughal Empire  left their mark on the story of  India.

During the  Mughal  era, from the  16th-19th century , popular monuments such as the  Taj Mahal ,  Humayun's Tomb ,  Fatehpur Sikri , the  Red Fort,  and the  Agra Fort , were constructed and reflected the artistic collaboration between both  Persian  and  Indian  architectural styles. The  East India Company  and the establishment of the  British Raj  also began in this era and its authority would continue until  1947  when  Indian  independence was declared. In  1950 , a secular and democratic government was established marking the new era of modern India. Today, the colors, rituals, spirituality and vibrant culture of  India  are known and admired worldwide, so a  package holiday to India  is the best choice for a full experience of the wonders of the country.

Indian culture

The world’s most populous country,  India  is known for its rich culture which varies from region to region. The official language is  Hindi , although there are lots of regional languages that are widely spoken and  English  is the main language in which education and business are communicated. Religion is an important part of life in  India  and although  Hinduism  is the leading faith,  Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity  and ancient  Zoroastrianism  all contribute to the melting pot of culture and rituals.

With a complex cultural catalog of beliefs and practices, concepts such as  karma, dharma  and the widely popular practice of  yoga,  all originate from  India.  Ancient languages such as  Sanskrit  and  Sangam , are considered important pillars of culture in the country, although  performing arts  and  music  are at the center of India’s vibrant heart. Dances often act out myths, legends, and religious teachings and are an unmissable sight on a  holiday to India.

In recent years the  Indian  film industry, sometimes known as ‘ Bollywood’ , has gained recognition worldwide for its brilliant mix of modern and traditional values, opening up an insight into today’s India to viewers around the globe.  Family values  are another important pillar in everyday  Indian  life, with a multi-generational patriarchal structure being the most common structure of family life. It is also common for consensual arranged marriages to be organized for the younger generations. Traditional dress is a highly recognizable part of  Indian  culture, seen in the colorful fabrics and patterns of the  ‘saris’  and  ‘cholis ’ often irresistible to visitors on  holiday in India,  who cannot resist buying the beautiful textiles to take home with them.

From the immortal deserts of Rajasthan to the sleepy backwaters of Kerala and spiritual ghats of Varanasi, India is a must-visit destination for all intrepid travelers. If you dream of having your eyes opened to a different way of life, to unbelievable devotion, to the most vibrant colors of the spring Holi festival and to the smiles and friendliness of the local people, a  package tour of India  will deliver these dreams to you.

Tour Itinerary

Day 01/Thu: Departing for New Delhi The trip begins with your international flight for New Delhi from a city of your choice. You’ll lose a day upon crossing the International Date Line .

Day 02/Fri: Arrival in New Delhi Meet your guide on arrival and transfer to the hotel in a private vehicle. No activity is scheduled for today and no meal is included.

Day 03/Sat: New Delhi (B/L/D) Delhi is both a city and a national capital territory. The city of Delhi consists of two components – Old Delhi in the north and New Delhi in the south. Old Delhi is where most of the historical landmarks are located while New Delhi serves as the seat of India’s national government. Among the locals, Delhi and New Delhi are used interchangeably but this often leads to confusion among foreign visitors. Delhi is of great historical significance as an important commercial, transport, and cultural hub, as well as the political centre of India.

Our full-day sightseeing takes in Raj Ghat (Mahatma Gandhi Memorial), Jama Masjid (historic and largest mosque in India), Qutub Minar (minaret, UNESCO Heritage Site), and Humayun’s Tomb. Our schedule also includes a rickshaw ride in Chandni Chowk – a traditional market district of narrow streets crowded with shops selling all kinds of spices, dried fruits, jewelry, saris, etc.

Day 04/Sun: New Delhi – Varanasi (B/L/D) The morning flight to Varanasi takes about an hour and half.

Located in the middle-Ganges valley, Varanasi is regarded as the spiritual capital by Hindus, a destination for pilgrimage, death and mourning. Varanasi is among the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world with a tradition heavily influenced by Islamic culture. The city’s population is currently estimated at around 1.2 million.

After lunch, we explore the archaeological site of Sarnath. Located 10 km northeast of Varanasi, Sarnath is the place where the Buddha gave his first sermon to his followers. The site contains ruins of Buddhist buildings, a 39-metre-high stupa, and the Sarnath Archaeological Museum which houses the famous Ashokan Lion Capital memorial pillar.

Witnessing prayer offering on the banks of the Ganges this evening is a major highlight of our trip. Performed by Hindu priests, this ritual begins at dusk every day and draws large crowds.

Day 05/Mon: Varanasi (B) Enjoy an early morning boat ride on the Ganges. Observing the deceased lying in burning pyres next to devotees celebrating life in the holy river could be an emotional experience for many.

After a walking tour through parts of the ancient city, we spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 06/Tue: Varanasi – Khajuraho (B/L/D) The morning flight to Khajuraho takes one hour.

Khajuraho is a small town with a population of no more than 25,000. However, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India owing to its large group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site collectively known as the Khajuraho Group of Monuments. Most of the temples were built between 885 AD and 1000 AD. Some of them are better known for their erotic sculptures although such sexual themes make up less than 10% of the entire temple sculptures.

We spend the afternoon exploring the main Hindu and Jain temples.

Evening entertainment is an outdoor sound and light show if available. The show attempts to present the basic history and myths of Khajuraho temples.

Day 07/Wed: Khajuraho – Orchha (B/L/D) Our sightseeing in Khajuraho continues this morning.

After lunch we drive 200 km (3 hours) to Orchha.

Orchha is a sleepy little town nestled on the banks of the Betwa River. It was founded in 1531 by Rudra Pratap Singh, the first raja of the kingdom of Orchha, who also started the construction of the magnificent Orchha Fort complex. Once the power centre of Bundela Rajputs in the 16th century, the town seems to be frozen in time. Only through the grandeur of its old palaces and temples can the visitor sense its past glory.

Day 08/Thu: Orchha (B/L) Our sightseeing in Orchha today consists of Raja Ram Temple, Jahangir Mahal, Chaturbhuj Temple, Laxmi Narayan Temple and the impressive Royal Cenotaphs.

Day 09/Fri: Orchha – Agra (B/L/D) We transfer to the train station in Jhansi (20 km northwest of Orchha) following breakfast for our three-hour rail journey to Agra.

Situated by the Yamuna River and about 200 km southeast of Delhi, Agra is best known for Taj Mahal, a mausoleum complex built in the 17th century for Mumtaz Mahal, consort of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Agra has a long history preceding the arrival of the Mughals. However, the historical monuments we see today in Agra are almost exclusively associated with the Mughals who established an Islamic early-modern empire that controlled much of South Asia between the 16th and 19th centuries.

Afternoon sightseeing introduces us to the massive Agra Fort, also known as Red Fort, which was built between 1565 and 1573 for Akbar (1542-1605), the greatest of the Mughal emperors of India.

Day 10/Sat: Agra (B/L) Our sightseeing today begins with a visit to the magnificent Taj Mahal early in the morning. Described as the most extravagant monument ever built for love, this poignant Mughal mausoleum has become the de facto emblem of India’s tourism. Commissioned in 1631 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his consort, Mumtaz Mahal, the ivory-white marble mausoleum has to be seen in person for its beauty to be truly felt.

Other attractions on our list to visit today include Emperor Akbar’s Tomb, and Itmad-Ud-Daulah’s Tomb (nicknamed Baby Taj, often regarded as a draft of the Taj Mahal).

Day 11/Sun: Agra – Ranthambore National Park (B/L/D) After breakfast we travel overland to Ranthambore National Park (300 km). The entire journey including a stop at Fatehpur Sikri and lunch time takes about 7 hours.

Built during the second half of the 16th century by Emperor Akbar, Fatehpur Sikri (City of Victory) was capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585.  Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, Fatehpur Sikri follows a uniform architectural style and includes one of the largest mosques in India.

Bound by Banas River to the north and Chambal River to the south, Ranthambore National Park covers an area of 1,334 square kilometres. It is named after the historic Ranthambore Fort, which lies within the park. The terrain interspersed with lakes and streams consists of tropical dry forest, open bushland and exposed rocks. The park is best known for its Bengal tigers which number to 86 according to the latest count in 2022. Besides tigers, wildlife in the national park includes the Indian leopard, Indian elephant, wild water buffalo, Indian bison, chinkara (Indian gazelle), and caracal, just to mention a few. In total, there are 40 mammal species living in the park. Visitors are also delighted by the large number of migratory and resident birds in the park; in fact, over 300 avian species have been recorded in and around the park.

Day 12/Mon: Ranthambore National Park (B) Our morning and evening wildlife sighting safaris aboard purpose-designated vehicles are conducted by professionally trained naturalists. It is important to keep in mind that sighting of tigers is not guaranteed despite their relatively large number.

Day 13/Tue: Ranthambore National Park – Jaipur (B/L/D) The 200 km drive to Jaipur following breakfast takes about 4 hours.

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan as well the state’s largest city with a current population of over 3 million. It is known as the Pink City due to the dominant colour scheme of its buildings. Jaipur was founded by the king of Amber, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, for the purpose of being his new capital to replace the town of Amber. The move was necessitated due to lack of space and reliable water sources at Amber. Construction of Jaipur began in 1726 and took four years to complete. It was one of the earliest planned cities of modern India with a grid system interpreted in the light of Vedic architecture.

After lunch we visit a social enterprise engaged in the provision of vocational training to Jaipur’s street children. The goal of the nonprofit, non-governmental project is to equip the marginalized kids with valuable skills so that they can join mainstream society.

A visit to Birla Mandir follows dinner. This Hindu temple was built in 1988 and is constructed solely of white marble.  It is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu (Narayan), whose images adorn the inside along with other Hindu gods and goddesses.

Day 14/Wed: Jaipur (B/L) We begin today’s sightseeing at Amber Fort, a sprawling palace complex originally built by Raja Man Singh (r. 1589-1614) and expanded by Jai Singh I (r. 1621-1667). Improvements and additions were done by successive rulers over the next 150 years until Jaipur became the capital in 1727. Amber Fort is constructed of red sandstone and white marble. The opulent palace is laid out on four levels, each with a courtyard, and serves as a great example of Rajput architecture.

We spend the rest of the day exploring the City Palace, Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), and Jantar Mantar (astronomical observatory built in the 17th century).

Those wishing to check out a night market can go with the guide following dinner.

Day 15/Thu: Jaipur – New Delhi (B/L) The drive back to Delhi (300 km) plus lunch time could take up to 6 hours. After hotel check-in, guests interested in shopping will have a vehicle with driver at their disposal.

Day 16/Fri: Departing for Home (B) The memorable India tour comes to an end this morning. The local guide will escort you to the airport in a private vehicle at a time suitable for your flight.

India Travel Q&A

Do I need a passport to visit India? Yes. Your passport must have at least 2 blank visa pages and 6 months of validity at the end of the tour.

Do I need a tourist visa to enter India? Yes, visa is required. India issues electronic visa to eligible applicants. Details can be found on Indian government’s website. India tourist e-Visa for Canadians and Americans, valid for 30 days to 1 year or 5 years,  currently cost US$25, US$40 and US$80 respectively. Payment can be made by Visa or MasterCard. Please note that a card payment surcharge of 2.5% applies to all transactions in addition to any applicable foreign transaction and/or currency conversion costs. If you go on an India tour with Laurus Travel, we will assist you with the application.

What immunizations do I need for India? Visitors may be asked for proof of vaccinations against COVID-19 prior to or on arrival. Nucleic acid or PCR testing prior to arrival is no longer required. Where applicable, updated information on this will be provided to the guest when their balance of payment is due (90 days prior to departure).

We are not aware of any other inoculation requirements and we suggest that you visit the websites of your national government’s disease control centre and the Indian High Commission or embassy in your country for the latest. We recommend all of our guests to be vaccinated against hepatitis A.

What should I watch out for to stay heathy while in India? Do not drink from the tap. Ask for bottled or boiled water when eating in restaurants. When buying bottled water from street vendors, especially at tourist sites, make sure the cap is properly sealed because some vendors may be selling tap water in recycled bottles.

Try to avoid uncooked food. Raw food, even clean, may cause stomach upset or diarrhoea.

Always carry a roll of toilet paper and a bottle of hand sanitizer containing more than 60% of alcohol, no matter where you go.

Always have an N95 type of facemask handy when you travel by public transport. Passengers sitting next to you may be sick and cough loud but wear nothing to cover their mouth.

Banknotes in general carry all kinds of germs. Minimize your contact with local banknotes and coins by keeping them in a plastic bag and sanitize your hands every time you touch them. Use plastic for payment as much as possible.

How do I pay for local purchases? The Indian currency known as rupee (ISO code: INR) can be withdrawn from ATMs upon arrival in India. Please keep your inventory of local currency to the minimum. The tour fare already covers all the expensive items and most, if not all, of the meals. You only need some local cash, which can be easily obtained as you go, for such incidentals as souvenirs and tips not included in the tour price.

Consider using credit cards for transactions over $20. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted across India. Street vendors may ask for U.S. dollars but please exercise caution if you want to play along.

Do you offer travel insurance? Yes, the insurance plans we offer cover a wide range of risks including medical emergencies and losses due to trip cancellation. Please contact us for premium quotes when you are ready to sign up with us.

Are there any direct flights to India from Canada? Yes, Air Canada and Air India offer non-stop flights between Toronto and New Delhi. From Vancouver, non-stop flight to New Delhi is available via Air India. Both airlines use Boeing 777. If you find the flights too long (13 to 15+ hours), you have break up the long journey with a stopover in Europe or East Asia depending on the airport you choose to fly out of. For those who want to fly premium economy or business class, we have unbeatable deals available all year round.

Why makes Laurus Travel’s India tours particularly senior-friendly? We have taken many concrete measures to make our India tours enjoyable for seniors. These include considerate pacing, frequent washroom breaks, avoiding activities requiring hard physical excretion, small group size, comfortable accommodations, clear communication about tour details, inclusion of leisure or downtime, so on and so forth.

One thing we pay particular attention to is customer feedback. We continuously gather feedback from seniors who join our India tours and use that information to improve future offerings. Only through such conscientious efforts can we make India tours for seniors truly successful.

Most Popular Canada Tour Packages

About Canada Holidays It is general knowledge that Canada is the second-largest country in the world. But, what so many of us don’t know is that Canada is also an influx of charming landscapes. Its awe-inspiring scenery, vibrant cities and cultures and welcoming vibe make it a very popular tourist destination, especially for Asians.

And, to make this awe-inspiring scenery extend to a heart-warming trip, Thomas Cook India is here to help you choose the kind of holiday you can make the most out of.

Canada is the land of majestic mountains. It is the land of lush green forests, and mesmerizing coastlines. What we know of Canada is very little compared to what the reality of the harmonious country is. And, well, do you know what its reality is? Vibrant and culturally rich cities full of natural and manmade wonders- yes, that’s what. Canada is home to people from different cultures and backgrounds. The accepting nature of this country makes home to people of different descent- British, French and others.

How to go to Canada? Multiple Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bangalore have constant flights from India to reach Canada . These flights connect to most major Canadian cities of Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal. While most flights are generally connecting flights that have one or two halts, there are also some 15-hour long direct flights from New Delhi to Toronto and Mumbai to Toronto.

Best time to go to Canada : Yes, we know that countries of the west remind us of snowfall (the sight of which looks straight out from a fairytale), and snow-covered streets. But, as tempting as it is to visit Canada during the winter, the best time to visit Canada is during summer, between June and September. The weather is warm and pleasant. This is the perfect time to enjoy natural landscapes such as lakes, gardens and parks. This is also the ideal time to visit the countryside and to enjoy outdoor lunches and picnics.

Winter, of course, also has pros and cons of its own. However, Canada experiences extreme cold during the winter as the temperature drops drastically. But winter also means that you would get to enjoy winter sports like skating and skiing. Depending on the activities you want to engage in, and the places you want to visit, you must decide if you want to visit during the summer or winter.

Places to visit in Canada: Quebec City: Quebec City is one of the most famous tourist destinations of Canada . If you’re someone who enjoys the feel of colourful old towns, high-domed churches and narrow streets filled with tiny art stalls and ice cream places, then Quebec City is the place to visit! Called North America’s oldest walled city, we would recommend Quebec for couples looking forward to a romantic getaway. Niagara Falls: Of course, no discussion about Canada will ever be complete without a mention of the marvelous, majestic and mesmerizing Niagara Falls . As is commonly known, one can see half of the falls from the town of Niagara in Canada, while the other half can be seen from the United States of America. For those interested, there are also ferry services that tour you around the falls. En route these ferry jet boats is a remarkable experience of its own, especially when one nears the falls and feels the gentle spray of water on their face.

The town of Niagara is not just known for these falls, but also for the many casinos that are spread around the area. St John’s: The artistic town of St John’s is famous among locals and tourists alike as Mini San Francisco for its colourful, picture-perfect town vibe. This town, with its technicoloured houses, has a vibrant atmosphere and appeals to the creative side of even the most practical of souls. Despite being one of the oldest towns of the country, St John’s has a refreshing vibe that makes for a pleasant getaway. Whistler: Whistler hosts the largest ski resorts in the entire North American continent. This is a winter wonderland and has everything- from snowboarding and skiing to tobogganing. Whistler, however, is not a day trip, and we would recommend staying there for a couple of days to make the most out of the many resorts in the area. Tofino: Tofino is the perfect place to go to if you're looking for a beach-y getaway. For the love of sea, sand and sun, you must indulge in a visit to Tofino and explore the beautiful Long Beach and Chester Man beach. Old Montreal: For all of you old-school souls, Old Montreal will literally seem like a scene from your favourite 18th-century novel. With impressive architecture, horse-drawn carriages, domed buildings and quaint bistros, the city of Old Montreal has an old-worldly charm to it. This is actually a perfect vacation spot, especially if you're looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Churchill: This is one of our personal favourites to visit in Canada. And, for one particular reason: polar bears. Churchill is the polar bear of the world! If even that doesn't sound exciting to you (HOW!), then what about underwater activities? Churchill is the hub of that and more!

What to eat in Canada? Poutine: Out of respect for this amazing dish, we had to put it first! Imagine a plate full of hot, crispy fries topped with cheese and rich gravy of your choice. Does it sound tempting? This French-Canadian dish has gained considerable popularity over time and is now available globally. The dish has vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian variants. Butter tarts: Well, tarts are not a big novelty. But, how often have you heard of butter tarts? They sound ordinary but believe us when we say their taste is anything but ordinary. Flaky pastry shells are filled with butter, sugar and eggs to make the lip-smacking butter tarts that Canada is so famous for! Bannock: Bannock, essentially a type of bread, was the staple food of Canada's Aboriginal people. However, over the years this bread has undergone many changes. Now, one would find many versions of bannock available in most patisseries throughout the country. There is baked bannock and then, there is fried bannock. This is one of those things that you would want to carry back with you! Caesar Cocktail: Who doesn't like cocktails? Nobody. Yes, we thought so! Well, when in Canada, you must let loose and party a little. And, what better way to party than by trying the country's national cocktail? The Caesar, made with vodka, clamato juice, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce is Canada's version of the Bloody Mary. But what really makes this set out from the others is the garnishing. Along with the traditional garnishing of a salt rim and celery stalk, some restaurants and bars have upped their game by including an entire roast chicken, sliders, onion rings and even hot dogs as rim companions! Pouding chômeur: The name of this pudding literally means 'unemployment pudding'. It is said that this pudding was introduced during the time of the Great Depression. This classic French-Canadian dessert is made of a few basic ingredients- cake batter topped with hot syrup. Its charm lies not in its ingredients or preparation, but in its deliciously sweet taste that melts the heart and its woes!

What to do in Canada: Visit the CN Tower: The CN Tower is the landmark of Toronto. It is an 1815-feet long tower that highlights the city’s skyline. The tower offers not just a very mesmerizing view, but also a very exciting experience through the glass floor. Looking down through the glass below your feet is a once-in-a lifetime experience, truly!

Another exciting opportunity for all adventurous souls is walking on the edge of the CN tower. Equipped with protection gear like jumpsuits and harness, walking on the edge is sure to give a much-needed adrenaline rush! Mountain Biking: The winter land, as many people believe Canada to be, is not just about winter activities like skiing and snowboarding. It is also about outdoor activities like mountain biking in British Columbia. Canadian citizens, especially the people of Vancouver are very fond of outdoor activities as they like to make the most out of the pleasant weather. These enthusiasts have mapped out several mountain bikes trails. The towns of Sooke and Campbell River also have suitable terrains on which one can experience bicycle tours. Canoe Your Way: The landscapes of Canada offer more than just peace of mind. The mesmerizing icy blue lakes at Banff offer you the chance to float on a canoe, that you can navigate on your own, with your significant other. The cherry on top is that the beautiful lakes are surrounded by majestic fir trees and Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The same lakes also offer the option of kayaking, if you’re looking for a more thrilling activity. Hop through West Queen West: West Queen West is Canada’s trendiest and the hippest neighbourhood because of its amazing street art. This area is a must visit to pacify the spontaneous, creative soul within you. West Queen West is home to the trendiest artist and houses a lot of galleries. What’s more, the area also offers a chance to go on a free graffiti tour! Don’t miss out on exploring galleries like the Propeller and the Birch Contemporary. Skate through the Ottawa Canal: UNESCO has declared Ottawa Canal a world heritage site. And, the 202 km Rideau Canal is an entry in the Guinness Book of World as the world’s longest naturally frozen lake. This lake is best suited for ice skating during the months of January, February and March. The lake is surrounded by snack stations and changing stations. This region also hosts the Winterlude Festival which has ice sculptures, live music and dance festivals. Party in Vancouver City: This is probably the most exciting invitation for most of our readers. Vancouver is known for its wild and frolic nightlife! With various clubs situated in a line, you will find enough and more options to unwind with a pint of beer and some delectable snacks.

So, what are you waiting for? Book your Canada tour through Thomas Cook India. All you have to do is tell us where you want to go and when, and we will plan it out for you!

Someone disguised as an old man was seized at Indian airport bound for Canada

Latest Videos

A man disguised as a senior trying to board a flight to Canada was seized by Indian authorities at the Delhi airport last week.

According to Indian publication The Tribune , the 24-year-old passenger altered his appearance in an attempt to impersonate an elderly individual.

He was stopped by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at Indira Gandhi Airport on Tuesday evening. He was reportedly booked on an Air Canada flight.

The Tribune noted that the man's activities appeared "suspicious" to CISF officers.

He presented a passport to officials, claiming to be a 67-year-old man named Rashvindar Singh Sahota.

Officers noticed something suspicious about his appearance, quickly realizing that he looked much younger than the man in the passport photo he had presented to them.

"Closer observation revealed that he had dyed his hair and beard white and was wearing glasses to appear older," a CISF official told The Tribune .

According to a post from CISF on X, the passenger was allegedly involved in "human trafficking and impersonation… [and] attempted to travel by impersonating an aged person… using false documents."

Officers interrogated the passenger further and searched his phone, where they found a picture of his actual passport. Delhi Police arrived and took him into custody.

Sikh assassinations: Are the US and Canada raising the heat on India?

A year after Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder, court cases in Canada and US focusing on alleged Indian overseas murder plots is testing New Delhi’s ties with Ottawa and Washington.

A member of a Sikh organisation holds a placard displaying Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Amritsar on September 22, 2023. An activist for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland called Khalistan, Hardeep Singh Nijjar was wanted by Indian authorities for alleged terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder, and was shot dead by two masked assailants near Vancouver in June.

A year after Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed outside a community shrine near Vancouver, a series of diplomatic and legal measures is sharpening the scrutiny on India’s alleged role in quashing overseas Sikh separatist movements through assassinations in both the United States and Canada.

In Canada, an upcoming hearing on the Nijjar case on June 25 will offer prosecutors a new chance to present evidence to back their allegations of India’s involvement in the murder.

Sikh leaders welcome arrests in canada activist killing, but questions loom, fourth indian arrested and charged in canada over sikh activist’s killing, india’s assassination plot, czech republic sends indian suspect in plot to kill sikh separatist to us.

Meanwhile, Nikhil Gupta, suspected of being involved in a plot to kill Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun , was extradited from the Czech Republic to the US earlier this month.

Here is more about what Canada and the US are doing – and what it means for India:

Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh, the three individuals charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in relation to the murder in Canada of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023, are seen in a combination of undated photographs released by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). IHIT/Handout via REUTERS THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN SUPPLIED BY A THIRD PARTY

What’s happening in Canada with the Nijjar case?

Four Indian nationals were arrested in May this year over the fatal shooting of Nijjar in June last year. The four men are Amandeep Singh, 22; Kamalpreet Singh, 22; Karan Brar, 22; and Karanpreet Singh, 28.

Sikh activists marked the first anniversary of Nijjar’s death by holding a mock trial of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi outside the Indian consulate in downtown Vancouver. They carried an effigy of Modi in prison stripes, asserting the Indian government’s role in Nijjar’s death.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Parliament last week honoured Nijjar on the anniversary of his assassination with a moment of silence – sparking an angry response from India. Nijjar, 45, was deemed a terrorist by the Indian government three years before his death.

Sikhs in Canada are continuing to hold non-binding referendums on the creation of a separate Sikh nation out of India’s Punjab state, with the next vote scheduled on July 28 in Calgary, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported.

The four men accused of involvement in Nijjar’s murder will appear in a court hearing on June 25 in the city of Surrey.

How has Nijjar’s case strained India-Canada ties?

Nijjar was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey in Canada’s British Columbia on June 18, 2023. Surrey has a large number of Sikhs, who make up 2 percent of Canada’s population.

Nijjar was associated with the Khalistan movement , an ethnoreligious movement that sprung up among the Sikhs in India, who make up 2 percent of India’s population but nearly 60 percent of the population in the northern state of Punjab.

Khalistan is the proposed name for a Sikh nation envisioned by some Sikhs, incorporating the state of Punjab as well as other Punjabi-speaking areas of northern India.

While the movement died down after a crescendo in India in the 1970s and early 1980s, due to a crackdown by Indian forces and Hindu mobs, it has recently seen a resurgence among Sikhs in the diaspora.

In September 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that Canada was probing the possibility that India’s government was involved in Nijjar’s assassination. India has rejected any involvement in Nijjar’s death.

The incident put a strain on the relationship between the two countries, with India withdrawing its diplomats from Canada and briefly suspending visas for Canadians. Trade talks between the nations have been in deep freeze since Trudeau’s bombshell allegations.

Last week at the G7 conference in Italy, Modi and Trudeau shook hands, but it was unclear whether they discussed India’s potential involvement in Nijjar’s death.

The tensions are not likely to abate anytime soon, especially with hearings into the Nijjar case expected to reveal more about Canada’s accusations against India. The Modi government has repeatedly accused Trudeau of pandering to Sikh separatists in the search for their votes, ignoring Indian national security concerns.

That criticism emerged again last week, after the Canadian Parliament’s mark of respect for Nijjar. “Time again, we have said that Khalistani activities are a matter of serious concern for us. We have been repeatedly calling upon the government of Canada to take action. Political space provided to extremist anti-India elements and those advocating violence must stop and they must take action,” India’s Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

India claims that Canada has not yet provided it with any clear evidence linking Nijjar’s assassination to Indian agents. New Delhi has insinuated that a rivalry between criminal gangs in Canada may have been behind the killing.

What is happening in the US?

But Canada is not the only country where the overseas actions of Indian security agencies are under scrutiny.

The Czech Republic has extradited Indian national Nikhil Gupta to the US, where prosecutors have accused him of involvement in an unsuccessful murder-for-hire plot to kill Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

Gupta, 53, who was arrested last year in June by Czech authorities while travelling from India to Prague, reached the US on June 14.

Much like in the Nijjar case, the Indian government has sought to dissociate itself from the plot against Pannun. However, it has said it will formally investigate security concerns raised by Washington.

Last month, Washington said it was satisfied so far with India’s moves to ensure accountability in the alleged plots while adding that many steps still needed to be taken.

Gupta, who has been held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, since his arrival to the US, pleaded not guilty on June 17.

What was the Gurpatwant Singh Pannun case?

On November 29, 2023, the US Justice Department announced charges against Gupta, accusing him of working for the Indian government to carry out the planned assassination of Pannun, who is a US citizen, in New York.

Federal prosecutors described Gupta as an associate of an Indian government agency employee identified only as “CC-1”, who previously worked with the Central Reserve Police Force, a leading Indian government paramilitary force, the indictment stated.

The indictment alleged that CC-1 directed the murder plan from India and recruited Gupta around May 2023 to coordinate it.

Gupta, on CC-1’s direction, contacted a person whom he believed was a criminal associate who could carry out the assassination, the indictment alleged. But the person he reached out to was, unknown to Gupta , working confidentially for US law enforcement.

This source in turn connected him to a “hitman” who was actually an undercover law enforcement officer, working for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), said the indictment.

Gupta agreed to pay the hitman $100,000 for killing Pannun, paying him an advance of $15,000 in cash in Manhattan around June 9, 2023, according to the US Justice Department.

If convicted, Gupta can face up to 20 years in prison.

The DEA, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), are probing this case, according to a Justice Department press release on June 17.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun

Are the tremors being felt elsewhere?

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) recently published an article accusing Indian agents of harassing and threatening members of the Sikh diaspora in Australia, and linking those cases to Nijjar’s assassination as well as the alleged plot in the US targeting Pannun.

The ABC has previously reported on Australia expelling an alleged “nest of spies” from India. Its reporting suggests that agents from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), the domestic intelligence agency, met with Sikh activists in Australia regarding Nijjar’s death.

The ABC has said that YouTube blocked some of its in India ahead of the country’s general election . YouTube said the ban was following a “confidential” order which came under India’s Information Technology Act of 2000.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese – who in May 2023 had feted Modi in Australia, comparing his popularity to that of iconic singer Bruce Springsteen – or his government has not commented on the ABC reports.

The North Americans Racing the 2024 Tour de France

There is no shortage of American and Canadian talent set for this year’s Tour.

40th vuelta ciclista a la regi de murcia costa calida 2024

Here’s a look at the North Americans competing in the 2024 Tour de France:

Guillaume Boivin (Israel-Premier Tech)

Premier Tech is a Canadian company, so it’s nice to see the team staying true to its identity by bringing three Canadians to the 2024 Tour de France. Boivin will be starting his fourth Tour in a row this year, and while he’s never recorded a high stage finish of his own, the 35-year-old is the exactly kind of selfless, strong, and experienced support rider a team needs while hunting for stage wins. If Israel-Premier Tech leaves the Tour with a stage victory (or two), expect Boivin to have played a role in making it happen.

Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech)

topshot cycling fra dauphine

Gee exploded onto the scene in last year’s Giro d’Italia, where the Canadian scored six top-5 stage finishes including second-places finished on four stages in the Italian grand tour. It was only his first grand tour, but the then-25-year-old’s career also finished second overall in the Giro’s Points and King of the Mountains Classifications.

All those second-place finishes seem to have inspired the Canadian heading into 2024: he took the first WorldTour victory of his career by winning Stage 3 at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné–then hung around the top of the General Classification to finish third overall. But don’t expect him to shoot for a high GC finish at the Tour de France; he’s hunting for the stage victories that eluded him in last year’s Giro. And given the way he’s been riding, we won’t be surprised if he wins more than one.

Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech)

Houle has started and finished every edition of the Tour de France since 2019. At first he was purely a domestique, riding on behalf of his GC captains at Astana. But then he moved (along with Premier Tech, who formerly sponsored Astana) to Israel-Premier Tech and was offered more opportunities to ride for himself.

Well, he took full advantage in 2022, when he scored a breakaway stage win (in the Pyrenees, no less) on Stage 16–just a few days after finishing third on Stage 13. The 33-year-old will get more chances this year, and his experience will prove invaluable to guys like Gee, who’s riding his first Tour de France and looks to be the cornerstone of the team’s opportunistic plans.

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike)

cycling fra dauphine

Even though he’s only 24-years-old, Jorgenson will be starting his third Tour de France this year, and his first since transferring from Movistar to Visma-Lease a Bike during the off-season. The kid from Idaho impressed everyone during his first two Tours, racing aggressively in pursuit of stage wins, coming close to winning a stage on multiple occasions.

But he’s reached new heights with Visma. First, he won Paris-Nice in early-March, defeating riders like Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel to take the biggest win of his still-young career. A few weeks later he won Dwars door Vlaanderen, a cobbled semi-Classic in Belgium. But his biggest breakthrough came at the Critérium du Dauphiné in early-June, where he raced like a Tour de France contender, riding consistently throughout the entirety of the 8-day stage race and almost stealing the overall victory from Roglič on the final stage.

He’s heading to the Tour in support of Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard. But if Vingegaard proves to be less competitive than the team hopes, Jorgenson could be given a chance to ride for himself–whether that means shooting for a high GC finish or a stage win we don’t exactly know. No matter what, Jorgenson is the most exciting rider American fans have had to root for in a while, someone who looks to have the makings of a future Tour de France champion.

Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike)

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 3

Jorgenson’s arrival has made it easy to overlook Kuss, the American who won last year’s Vuelta a España and spent the past several seasons as the most valuable mountain domestique in the sport. And that’s not an exaggeration: the 29-year-old helped Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard win the last two Tours de France and Slovenia’s Primož Roglič win three Vueltas a España and one Giro d’Italia–while taking a couple of stage wins (at the Vuelta in 2019 and at the Tour in 2021) for himself along the way.

Kuss has had a rather anonymous start to his season, but that’s usually been the case. As someone who prefers training to racing, he always saves his best for the grand tours. Like Jorgenson, he’ll once again start the Tour as Vingegaard’s mountain lieutenant, but he should be ready to ride for himself–or Jorgenson–if the team asks him to.

Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost)

Quinn turned 24 in early-May and the American celebrated by winning the national road race championships in Charlestown, West Virginia nine days later. He then took his new stars-and-stripes jersey to the Critérium du Dauphiné, where he raced well enough throughout the week to have probably earned himself a spot on EF’s roster for the Tour de France.

This will be only the second grand tour of the American’s career, but we don’t expect the event to be too big for him. If he makes his team’s roster, expect to see him feature in a few breakaways, possibly as one of the riders looking to take an early lead in the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition during the Tour’s hilly opening weekend.

Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost)

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 3

Powless will be starting his fifth Tour de France on Saturday, and he’s raced all of them with EF Education-EasyPost. The 27-year-old’s best Tour finish was twelfth overall in 2021, and last year he spent twelve days in the polka dot jersey as the leader of the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition.

This year we’d love to see Powless commit to winning a stage, which means not worrying about the GC standings or wasting energy chasing KOM points early in the Tour. He needs to sit down with the race bible, identify three or four stages that suit him the best, and then make those stages the focus of his entire Tour de France, essentially racing them like a series of one-day races–with long, hard training rides in between. With that kind of approach, he’s a good bet to take EF Education’s first Tour de France stage victory since 2022.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.
