We keep everybody busy — and nobody bored — all cruise long.

Families like yours bring the fun spirit to a Carnival cruise… but give us a little credit too! For one thing, we’ve got supervised youth spaces where kids can hang out and make new friends. Parents get to do their own thing too… plus there’s great things for families to do all together!

THERE’S BIG FUN IN CARNIVAL’S YOUTH PROGRAMS

What makes Carnival a great choice for kid-friendly cruises? We know that one size doesn’t fit all… but each size fits somebody just right! That’s why Carnival has a range of supervised programs for kids of all age groups, where they can meet up, have fun, enjoy learning experiences and make friends while hanging out with others their own age. From storytime to science, crafts to cultural enrichment, sports to sing-alongs… we help kids and teens get fun done.

FUN & FLEXIBILITY FOR FAMILIES

Fun happens for everyone on a Carnival cruise, but that doesn’t mean everyone’s idea of fun has to be the same. That’s why variety is key for families, and a Carnival cruise has fun for kids, teens and adults… plus the flexibility to either enjoy things together or do your own thing for a bit. That just might be along the lines of waterslides, mini-golf, live entertainment, or fun and enriching experiences from partners like Dr. Seuss, Zumbini and even the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

OH… PARENTS TOO, OF COURSE!

What goes into the perfect date night? Great drinks, dancing under the stars, a stage show… and this wouldn’t be the best family cruise without the one thing parents need most: dependable childcare! A Carnival cruise takes care of the essentials so you can — day or night — explore, enjoy and indulge in great ways to put the “you two” in “family vacation.”

ENJOY FAMILY DINING AND KID-FRIENDLY FOOD

“YUM, THAT’S MY FAVORITE!” –LITERALLY EVERYONE ON CARNIVAL

How can we be so sure you’re going to love the food on your Carnival cruise? Because there’s such amazing variety, from casual munching to sit-down dining, fancy stuff and beyond. Some examples: steakhouse, sushi, family-style Italian, tacos, burgers and more. We serve up so much variety that even the pickiest eaters can find new favorites at every restaurant, and tons of great options are included in your cruise fare! Plus the food is as flexible as you are hungry. Room service is always on the menu, 24 hours a day, and delivery is just a quick call away. Also very much available: the pizza station stays open until 4 a.m. — just in case you show up! — and our soft-serve machines don’t quit until the clock strikes midnight.

EXPLORE NEW PLACES AS A FAMILY

There are great destinations all over the globe, and a Carnival cruise can take you to spots with just the sights and vibes you’re looking for. And because we’re Carnival, you know we’re ready to help you find the most fun stuff to do in each!

CARIBBEAN & THE BAHAMAS CRUISES

Carnival is known for taking families to islands across the Caribbean and The Bahamas. That sounds to us like fun in the sun! And who — young or grown — would say no to a vacation of beaches, calypso music and swimming with dolphins? Could anyone pass up catamaran sailings, glass-bottom boat tours, exploring islands by Jeep or ATV… not to mention the chance to paddleboard, jet-ski or kayak? We’re honestly not sure… because we haven’t met them yet!

MEXICO CRUISES

Mexico is a family destination with two different destinations in it: the islandy east coast that shows off the Gulf, and the Pacific coast with its stunning desert style. Some of the best ways to see them would be, let’s see, on the east coast… exploring ancient ruins on land or gazing at spectacular undersea life through a snorkel mask. And on the west coast, try surveying the scene on horseback, flying down a zipline, or doing some whale watching with the best scenery.

ALASKA CRUISES

Alaska isn’t cold in the summer months… but it’s definitely still cool! Chill while taking in views of wildlife, mountains, glaciers, history and more — this is the perfect way to open young eyes to some of the world’s most stunning natural beauty. But don’t just look at it, get into the action with dogsledding, gold panning, a scenic railroad ride and more!

ROOMS DESIGNED FOR FAMILIES

kid friendly cruises to mexico

Whether you keep it cozy or let the kids have their own space, Carnival has stateroom options practically designed for your family! Some staterooms sleep up to five, and feature flexible bedding configurations. Some rooms come with a view, some with balconies, and some even have an extra half-bathroom — nice! And some connect to the room next-door, for the greatest family flexibility. And we can’t leave out the Family Harbor staterooms on select ships, which add nautical decor and fam-favorite exclusive perks like access to a families-only lounge, kids eating free at most specialty restaurants and more.

GREAT IDEAS FOR WHEN TO CRUISE

Cruise during the summer.

Planning a summer cruise is nice and easy, because with the kids out of school there’s plenty of space to fit a vacation into your calendar. (And for the kids… we know it’s not a competition, but get ready to totally win at “how I spent my summer vacation.”)

CRUISE FOR SPRING BREAK

When you see an opening on your calendar that looks perfect for a week off when the weather’s just right… grab it! Kids can head back to school refreshed and ready to wind down the school year.

SHORT CRUISES ANYTIME

Nobody needs a reason for a quick vacation — think along the lines of a long weekend or so — and just go. But if you want a great reason: it’s how easy short cruises are to plan! You’ll be back home with your new memories before you know it.

CELEBRATE A HOLIDAY AT SEA

Spending a holiday like Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving or New Year’s on a Carnival cruise doesn’t just make it unforgettable, it makes it easy: we do the cooking, we do the cleaning, we do the entertaining. So why not bring everybody?

Caribbean and Mexico Cruises for Families

kid friendly cruises to mexico

The Caribbean and Mexico are the top cruise destinations for families. Why? The weather is always nice; the ports of call showcase gorgeous beaches; the snorkeling opportunities are endless; and the bus tours visit impressive ancient Mayan ruins that transport you back a few thousand years. The cruises themselves often evoke a festive, Caribbean ambience onboard, offering theme nights in the dining rooms with jerk pork dishes and calypso bands.

In 1977, Norwegian Cruise Line, then Norwegian Caribbean Line, introduced the industry’s first snorkeling program, and the “snorkel” was recognized as more than a simple pool toy for kids. Nowadays, snorkeling is a big part of the cruise world. You’d be remiss to find a Caribbean or Mexico cruise without a snorkeling excursion, and families often take advantage of this adventurous, yet tamer than scuba diving, activity.

The most popular time to go to Mexico and the Caribbean is from December through April, offering an escape from the chilly weather in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Families tend to go in the summer, as it is easier to vacation outside of busy school year schedules. The Caribbean is not as hot as you might think during the summer months. Most of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico are in the hurricane belt, with the exception of a handful of islands like Aruba and Barbados (which doesn’t mean they’re in the clear as Aruba’s Hurricane Felix proved in 2007). Keep in mind that hurricane season runs from the beginning of June through November, concentrating in August, September and October.

Eastern Caribbean Eastern Caribbean has many islands with kid-friendly attractions. The cruise destination is a good one for first-time cruisers, as there is less of a culture shock, its safe and the port is never too far from the ship. Cruises range from three- or four-night long weekends to 10 days and more with just as much flexibility in budget. These ports of call are the most touristy and developed regions, as opposed to other parts of the Caribbean. Carnival and Disney offer short, year-round trips to the Caribbean. Carnival Fantasy, Fascination and Disney Wonder travel frequently to the Bahamas. Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess and Celebrity offer cruises that depart from Miami , Ft. Lauderdale or Port Canaveral. Not until recently, could passengers board cruises up and down the Eastern Seaboard at embarkation points like Baltimore and New York . Of course, these cruises are longer, from 7 to 11 nights, as the extra time is necessary to get to the Caribbean.

Though not officially part of the tropics, Key West is often a first stop in an Eastern Caribbean itinerary. It is the origin of Key Lime Pie and its famous Conch Salad gives passengers a sneak preview as to what Caribbean delicacies are to follow. Families can also tour the homes of Hemingway and Harry Truman. The “Dolphin Playground” is home to a pod of bottlenose dolphins, a great place to swim with dolphins.

Often a second stop is Nassau, Bahamas , offering kid-friendly tours at Atlantis Resort’s “Dig,” made to recapture the imagination of the lost city of Atlantis for young archeological-minded children. One of the most popular ports in the Caribbean, Nassau presents white-sand beaches, coconut palms and clear waters. Families can take a glass-bottom boat ride to see colorful fish or ride in a carriage past pastel-colored houses in town. Freeport is another port in the Bahamas, with more water sports and golf opportunities.

At St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands , families can dig deeper into the mysterious ocean world. Adjacent to Coki Beach, families can explore Coral World, offering an underwater observatory tower. Snorkeling often takes place just off the beach. St. Thomas is also home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Magens Bay. An aerial tram ride takes passengers to Paradise Point, where kids can gaze over what used to be roamed by pirates!

Tortola in the British Virgin Islands offers ferries to Virgin Gorda where families can snorkel and swim among famous prehistoric boulders, deemed “The Baths.” The destination also allows guests to yacht across channels to the nearby islands of Norman, Pepper and Cooper. Kids can get excited about retracing the same paths as Christopher Columbus on his famous voyage. St. Maarten of Saint Martin Island lets kids age 12 and older can also take part in yacht adventures in America’s Cup Racing.

San Juan, Puerto Rico presents many historic monuments. El Morro is the best for families. Kids can climb and run around the surrounding grounds of the 16th century ruins. The Castillo de San Cristobal is another colonial fortress built at the very tip of San Juan to protect the city. The town is a meeting place of old and new worlds, offering Spanish cobblestone alleys and modern, designer boutiques.

Mexico All- Mexican cruises are rare, as most Mexican itineraries stop in the Yucatan Peninsula at Cozumel and/or Costa Maya — technically part of the Western Caribbean. Deemed “Mexi-Caribbean” cruises, these voyages bop between the Mayan Riviera , Key West, the Cayman Islands and more. However, die-hard, pure-Mexico cruisers can still find Mexican-only cruises that stop in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco, for example.

Located at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas is a Mexican paradise, featuring golf courses at every corner and ships going out to deep-sea fish on the hour. The waters off the coast are some of the richest marine life in the world, so snorkeling is key. Further down the western coast, Acapulco is made up of three different districts: Old Acapulco, the Costera and Acapulco Diamante. Diamante is the area’s ritziest section with all the high-end resorts. The Costera is best for families, offering a buzzing five-mile long strip with shops and restaurants. Don’t leave without seeing the famous cliff divers soar from the jagged cliffs; they perform in the early afternoon and evening.

Off Mexico’s eastern coast in the Mayan Riviera, the island of Cozumel is full of Mayan history. The ancient city of Tulum, a walled, stone city on a grassy cliff by the sea, is arguably the best preserved example of Mayan culture. Its small size makes it perfect, not overwhelming, for small children. Plus, there’s plenty of stuff to climb on! The Temple of the Frescoes displays murals of the gods and sheds light on how the Mayans measured sun rays and moonbeams to calculate the passing of time. After Tulum, head over to Xel-Ha Park, an aquatic park that offers a natural, outdoor aquarium atmosphere. Here kids can meet and swim with hundreds of native species of fish, plants and other marine life. It’s a full-day excursion from the ship via ferry on the Yucatan coastline, but totally worth it. Closer to the port, families who like snorkeling can explore the turquoise waters and deep-blue lagoon of Yal-Ku, named “son of god” in Mayan. A diverse collection of fish and other sea creatures live in the lagoon, and it’s a short ride to Akumal’s white-sand beaches where kids can swim with sea turtles in the ocean.

Costa Maya is home to Chacchoben, the Mayan place of “red corn,” a hidden forest near the border of Belize. This site was the trade center of wood, jade and tropical birds. Guided tours detail restored pyramids, like Stella, where Mayan hieroglyphic writing can be deciphered in the rock. The excursion involves plenty of walking, so comfy shoes are a must.

Scuba diving and snorkeling is offered in the coastal town of Mahahual for kids as young as age 10. Lessons take place in shallow waters first, with later trips to dive sites showcasing barracudas, sea turtles and stingrays. Better yet, the coves of Mahahual were hideouts for pirate Blackbeard in the 18th century. The fishing village offers many family-friendly restaurants. Try Pez Quadro or Oxtankha.

Western Caribbean Western Caribbean has many distinct destinations, less touristy than the Eastern Caribbean, that offer something for everyone, from cultural history to shopping to snorkeling. A multitude of excursions please both parents and children, ranging from adrenaline-rushing zip lining to lazy days on the white-sand beaches. Virtually every big cruise line in North America offers voyages to the Western Caribbean. Carnival and Royal Caribbean are the most popular, offering trips all year long, as the temperatures consistently stay between 80 and 70 degrees. During holidays and on a seasonal basis, choose from all other cruise lines, such as Princess, Celebrity and Norwegian Cruise Line. Disney Magic also sails to Key West, Grand Cayman , Cozumel and to Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

In a sunny sandbar of North Sound, two miles east of Grand Cayman’s northwestern tip, families can get up-close with stingrays, squid and various primordial fish. No need to be afraid of the stingrays; apart from the very public incident with Steve Irwin, the animals are known to be very tame and only use their barbs when threatened. Stay away from their tails if you’re nervous. The excursion also tours Boatswain’s Bay Turtle Farm, a breeding grounds for Green and Hawksbill turtles. Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach offers all the luxuries a Caribbean beach is known for, including white sand and palm trees. The beach has some of the clearest and calmest waters, making it perfect for very young children or kids who enjoy snorkeling. Families can also water ski, surf or parasail. If you’re traveling with a skateboarding kid, check out Black Pearl Skate & Surf — a 62,000-square-foot course with beginner and advanced sections. Don’t miss the Butterfly Farm, where kids can learn about different types of butterflies, from the world’s smallest Pygmy Blue to a huge Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing 11-incher, and witness them in all four stages of the life cycle.

Ocho Rios has some of the area’s most beautiful waterfalls. Dunn’s River Falls is Jamaica’s “Niagara Falls,” displaying magnificent, limestone rocks that you can hike, linked hand-in-hand, and plunges over 600 feet. It’s a good idea to rent the water shoes, available onsite, as they offer more traction on the wet rocks. A parallel path is a dryer option, offering points where you can still get wet in plunge pools. The jungle has over 200 species of ferns, deep-set valleys and ocean views from 2,000 feet in the air at Murphy Hill. If your family likes horses, a horseback riding excursion is for you. You can’t get more “Caribbean” than riding a horse bareback through the warm sea waves. These horses’ ancestors were originally brought to the New World by Columbus. Beginner riders are welcome; children must be at least 6 years old.

Families seeking an adrenaline rush can explore the canopy of Montego Bay. Adventure tours allow visitors to zip line through the tropical rainforest, over lagoons and springs. Kids over age 9 can zip line, and close-toe shoes are a must. Jungle tubing is also common in this area at White River, accessed by an open-air jeep ride up the mountain. Large inner tubes take visitors on a leisurely float down the river, dotted with short sections of rapids that will excite kids. Local guides accompany guests, singing reggae tunes along the way. Be prepared to get drenched!

The largest of the Bay Islands, Roatan, Honduras, offers stunning snorkeling in the world’s second largest barrier reef system. Trek out to the northern tip of the island and lounge at West Bay Beach, with clear, shallow water that stands only five-feet deep and holds many colorful fish. The tour provides snorkeling gear for rent. The Natural Aquarium Snorkeling Trails has Bay Islands Beach Resort guides families through 12 buoy-marked stations with coral and sea stars. Punta Gorda is a Garifuna community on the eastern end of the island. Like stepping into another world, families experience the different culture through rhythmic music, mud stove-baked bread, basket weaving and woodcarving. Ferries transport visitors on a canal covered by red mangroves.

Though technically part of Central America , Belize is often a stop on Caribbean itineraries. Known for its lush rainforests, visitors often drive up the Western Highway to Cave’s Branch of the Sibun River and hike in the jungle. Families can also tube through the awe-inspiring, sacred Mayan caves on this hike. Cave tubing is wildly popular, showcasing limestone caverns with stalactites and stalagmites that wow kids. Barrier reef snorkeling is another favorite, especially for first-timers. There’s no pressure to scuba dive, as families can still witness beautiful schools of fish with a mask and a snorkel in shallow waters off the coast. For more adventure, catamarans make trips to Turneffe Atoll, a shallow reef about 16-miles off the coast with colorful sponges, parrotfish and barracuda.

The Best Cruises to Mexico for Every Traveler

By Meena Thiruvengadam

Cruise in Zihuatanejo Mexico

Whether it's world-class diving, white sandy beaches, or Mayan ruins you’re after, a cruise to Mexico can get you there in comfort and style.

Set sail from the West Coast to experience the beaches and nightlife of Cabo San Lucas , stroll the boardwalk in Mazatlan, or dig your toes into the sand in Puerto Vallarta. For diving and Mayan ruins, opt to cruise Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Dive into the deep blue water in Cozumel, walk a beach free of high-rise hotels in Costa Maya, or walk in the footsteps of the ancient Mayans in Tulum .

Several major cruise lines serve these routes with decked-out ships that offer something for everyone. Sprawling pools, thumping dance clubs, and fresh margaritas are just the beginning.

This is the domain of large cruise ships, but there are a few smaller vessels—like American Queen Voyages’ Ocean Navigator —that cruise to Mexico .

Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line sail to Mexico from the West Coast year-round. Three Carnival ships—the Carnival Miracle , Carnival Panorama, and Carnival Residence — cruise to Mexico from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Norwegian Cruise Line sails to Mexico from California, Florida, and New Orleans.

Princess Cruises, Holland America, Disney Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises sail to Mexico seasonally. While Mexico is warm year-round, you’ll find the most pleasant temperatures—and some of the best prices— between November through February. Mexico’s rainy season is from May through November, but expect bursts of showers instead of washouts. Hurricane season is between June and November, and while hurricanes don't always make landfall, the rains they bring can put a damper on even the best-planned beach day.

Whatever it is you’re looking for, and whenever it is you’re looking to set sail, there’s a cruise to Mexico that’s sure to feel tailor-made for you.

Best short cruise to Mexico

In just three nights, Royal Caribbean's  Navigator of the Seas sails from Los Angeles to Ensenada, Mexico, and back.  The itinerary includes a full day at sea—plenty of time to take a few laps around the ship’s ice skating rink, spend a few hours at the spa, try out the longest water slide at sea and catch a show. Of course, you could just spend your entire sea day lounging around on the pool deck eating Johnny Rockets and sipping on colorful cocktails. If you’ve got a little bit more time, opt for a four-night itinerary. Royal Caribbean offers two four-night itineraries on the  Navigator of the Seas . One adds a stop at idyllic Catalina Island. The other spends additional time in Ensenada.

Best weeklong cruise to Mexico

There may be no better way to bliss out than by sailing the  Norwegian Bliss along the Mexican Riviera. Sail roundtrip from Los Angeles, stopping in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Ensenada, Mexico. Spend port days visiting tequila factories, wineries and endless sandy beaches. Or opt for an adventurous 4x4 ride, snorkeling, kayaking or an idyllic horseback ride. On board the ship, you’ll have your choice of 19 restaurants, 20 bars, and plenty of things to do. The  Norwegian Bliss made its debut in 2018, and its entertainment offerings include a two-level  racetrack , Broadway shows, laser tag, mini golf and a casino. The ship has a private 18 and over beach club and a spa with both a salt room and a snow room.

Best family cruise to Mexico

There is so much to do on board the  Carnival Radiance your family might not want to leave the ship on port days. The  Carnival Radiance has a water park, a ropes course, mini golf, sports courts, and a kids club that accommodates ages two to 17. There’s also a teen spa, video arcade and enough room to play soccer, basketball, and volleyball on board. With more than a dozen restaurants, there’s something for even the most discerning junior palate. There’s even a green eggs and ham breakfast to go with a Seuss at Sea experience inspired by the famous author’s books.

Cuadro 44 Restaurant Deck 6 Midship Portside.Star Breeze Windstar Cruises

Windstar Star Legend's Cuadro 44 Restaurant

Best small ship cruise to Mexico

You could cruise to Mexico on a mega-ship. Or you could opt for a calmer, quieter, more yacht-like experience on Windstar Cruises’  Star Legend . This all-suite yacht boasts cabins that are nearly 300 square feet. The ship is fresh off a major renovation with a new spa, pool, and fitness center. Every bathroom on board has gotten a makeover and comes stocked with L’Occitane toiletries. The  Star Legend is scheduled to set sail from Miami in the spring. Windstar's  Jungles and Jewels of the Central American Coast itinerary sails roundtrip from Miami, stoppings in Key West en route to Cozumel and Costa Maya. But Mexico is just the beginning. Windstar’s  Star Legend also calls on Belize City, Belize, and Roatan, Honduras, giving passengers plenty of chances to go on an unforgettable dive, immerse themselves in ancient ruins or simply soak up the sunshine.

Best cruise to the Yucatan Peninsula

Mega ships aren’t the only vessels that cruise to Mexico . American Queen Voyages’  Ocean Navigator is less than one-tenth of the size of the behemoth ships sailing the region. The ship can accommodate just over 200 passengers and feels more like a river cruise ship than an ocean-going vessel. Restaurant and bar choices are limited, but that might not matter much when you’re sipping margaritas and snacking on molletes at the beach. The  Ocean Navigator ’s Mexico itineraries visit seven ports in 10 days, giving passengers the chance to dive into Cozumel’s deep blue water, explore Chichen Itza’s Mayan ruins, and sip on margaritas in Cancun. This isn’t the kind of ship that parties all night, but that should make it easier to wake up for gorgeous sunrises. The price of this all-inclusive cruise includes food, drinks, room service, Wi-Fi, pre-paid gratuities, port fees, and taxes.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Best luxury cruise to Mexico

There may be few more luxurious ways to arrive in Cabo San Lucas than on board Regent’s new  Seven Seas Grandeur . The cruise line's  Magic on the Mexican Riviera itinerary is scheduled to sail round trip from Los Angeles in late 2024, calling on ports including Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Puerto Vallarta. The 10-night journey includes three luxurious days of cruising the Pacific Ocean. Spend your sea days lounging around your spacious suite, playing bocce ball or shuffleboard or relaxing by the pool bar. The ship's suites range in size from 307 to 4,443 square feet. Each comes with a private balcony, and there may be no better place on board to enjoy your morning coffee with a view. Cruise fares on Regent Seven Seas include roundtrip business class intercontinental flights, unlimited shore excursions, unlimited beverages, specialty restaurants, and gratuities.

Best cruise to the Mexican Riviera

If you’re looking to touch grass at sea and sample the best of the Mexican Riviera, the  Celebrity Solstice is for you. This ship is home to a half acre of real green grass and sails from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. This is a ship with a cool vibe, a sophisticated feel, and lots of fun things to do on board. Try a cocktail-making class or a wine-blending class. Or catch a glass-blowing show on the grass. The ship is also home to more than 200 solar panels and generates some of its own electricity.

Carnival offers cruises to match everyone's availability and budget, with voyages lasting from two to 31 days.

Popular onboard activities include the WaterWorks water park, the BOLT ultimate sea coaster, the SkyRide suspended bikes, and authentic “Family Feud” game shows for the family to compete in.

Plus, parents can pamper themselves in the Cloud 9 Spa or the Serenity adults-only retreat. Starting in 2025, Carnival passengers can enjoy Celebration Key, the cruise line’s new private island experience.

Departure ports: 50-plus.

Destinations: 450.

Norwegian Cruise Line is an excellent choice when cruising with kids. Families can save money and experience the cruise line’s free kids clubs, included speciality dining for kids under age 12, free third and fourth guests promotion on select cruises, and free airfare for second guest promotion.

When you cruise with Norwegian, family-friendly options including pools and water parks, interactive game shows and competitions, and Broadway musicals. Norwegian also features the only racetrack at sea, the largest ropes course at sea, a zip line over the ocean and other thrilling adventures. Plus, the cruise line includes free youth clubs with programming and activities catering to each age group.

Normally, cruise ships have small staterooms, which can get crowded while traveling as a family. Norwegian, however, has several spacious room options that rival the space and amenities you'd find at a hotel. Room options include balcony staterooms, family suites, two-bedroom suites and Haven staterooms. The Haven is a luxurious private area with a 24-hour butler, private lounge, restaurant and sundeck. Staterooms at The Haven include a 1,307-square-foot suite and a 6,694-square-foot three-bedroom villa.

Departure ports: 68.

Destinations: 250.

MSC Cruises offers a variety of cruise lengths for families to choose from, including classic cruises of three to 11 nights, longer cruises of 23 to 27 nights, or the ultimate 120-day World Cruise.

MSC offers shared experiences for the entire family. Families can enjoy on-shore excursions, onboard dining and kids clubs. A special treat is the LEGO Experience, which is an entire day of LEGO activities that's available on all MSC ships.

Some ships feature zip lines, an MSC Formula Racer, interactive XD cinema, immersive VR experiences and Broadway-style performances. Some itineraries also have the option of spending the day at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas.

Departure ports: 26.

Celebrity Cruises offers vacations year-round with up to eight destinations in one sailing, and it also caters to families with itineraries during the summer, spring break and holidays.

Passengers can enjoy numerous family-friendly activities like movie night under the stars, kid-friendly excursions and kid and teen programs. Parents can even take advantage of Camp at Sea, which offers art classes, sports activities and special STEM-based programs to encourage children to learn when they're away from school.

For children with autism, Celebrity Cruises offers autism-friendly ships that feature interactive activities, special menu options and services geared toward passengers with autism.

If you're looking for a luxury experience for your family, book The Retreat. It includes a private sun deck, a spacious suite and large lounge areas. The Penthouse Suite is 2,500 square feet and is ideal for larger families or multiple families traveling together.

This chart compares the starting price for a seven-night Caribbean cruise in an interior room for a family of four in December 2024. (Norwegian offers only four-night and six-night cruises to the Caribbean in December 2024, so this chart includes Norwegian’s six-night cruise.)

The family includes two adults and two children ages 12 and under. While there are numerous variables involved in each package, this gives you an idea of the budget needed to book one of the best cruise lines for kids.

When shopping for the best cruise with kids, consider using an aggregator website like Cruise Sheet . It provides a dashboard to compare prices from different cruises all at once, rather than you having to visit each company's website individually.

Cruise vacations can be nonrefundable, so consider purchasing travel insurance for your vacation. While many cruise operators sell insurance policies, you may be better off buying a stand-alone travel insurance policy for the trip or for the entire year.

When searching for the best cruise for kids, you should consider the cruise line's amenities. Not only do you want a great experience for the kids, but the cruise should fit into your budget and keep the adults entertained, too.

Room sizes . Does the cruise offer enough space for your entire family, or will you need to book multiple rooms? If you have older kids who are mature enough, they can have their own room.

Dining options and room service . What dining options are available, and is room service included? Some cruise ships charge extra for premium dinners and have assigned times for dinner.

Adults-only areas . Are there areas of the ship that are strictly for adults? These adults-only spots can give you a break from the kids and keep the party atmosphere away from family areas.

Swimming pools and slides . How many pools are available on the ship, and do they offer slides and other amenities?

Kids and teen clubs . These clubs provide entertainment, crafts and other activities that are geared toward different age groups. You can drop off your kids for a few hours while you go get a massage, take a nap or enjoy adults-only parts of the ship.

Family-friendly activities . What activities and amenities are designed for the whole family to enjoy? Are there shows, dining experiences or games that involve the parents and kids?

Babysitting . Does the ship offer babysitting services for younger children? Some cruise lines have minimum age requirements, depending on the destination.

The best cruises for kids travel to multiple destinations during your trip. Depending on the length of your cruise, you may be able to visit several cities or countries. Common cruise destinations include:

The Caribbean.

The Mediterranean Sea.

Typically, U.S. citizens need a passport when traveling outside the U.S. However, children under the age of 16 don't need a passport for land or sea border crossings with Canada or Mexico. For this reason, cruises to Canada and Mexico are popular among families.

For cruises beyond Canada or Mexico, and all flights to destinations outside the U.S., children must have their own passport. If your child doesn't have a passport, a certified copy of your child's birth certificate can be used instead.

While many adults enjoy cruising, kids can have just as much fun. Today's cruise lines offer amenities and entertainment that rival water parks and theme parks. Plus, growing kids will love the all-you-can-eat dining options available when cruising. Kids clubs are also an excellent way to have fun and meet kids who are the same age.

Cruising is fun for the entire family, yet not all children are ready for this type of vacation. Some cruise lines have minimum age requirements. When reviewing cruise options, think about the types of cruise activities you're interested in, and consider whether your child is mature enough to participate.

Traveling as a family can be expensive, so some cruise lines offer discounts for younger children. Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines for kids because children age 12 and younger cruise for free on select dates with the cruise line's Kids Sail Free promotion. Families must still pay taxes, fees and port expenses for all travelers, even those who are cruising for free.

7 Best Cruise Lines for Families (and Their 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships)

By: Author Elizabeth Ciobanu

Posted on Published: 07/18/2023  - Last updated: 07/20/2023

Traveling to new places is always a thrill, but it can come with some challenges. For example, which side of the road are you supposed to drive on ?

kid friendly cruises to mexico

Cruises simplify the bulk of your vacation planning and transportation, as everything you need is in one convenient package.

A family cruise line will keep your children entertained day and night. I’ve rounded up seven of my favorites, which I’ll share in the first part of this guide.

Then I’ll recommend the most kid-friendly cruise ships for booking your next vacation.

The 7 Best Family-Friendly Cruise Lines

1. disney cruise line.

Discover how enchanting life at sea can be on a Disney Cruise Line.

Entertainment of all kinds awaits you. If you want to splash and play on your family vacation, you can ride the AquaDunk or AquaDuck water coasters, romp in Donald’s Pool or Goofy’s Pool, or enjoy the sparkling pool at Mickey’s AquaLab.

Pools are also divided for guests of varying ages, such as the Quiet Cove Pool for guests 18 and older, splash pads for kids three and under, and Satellite Falls for adults.

Live performances and musicals give each night a magical feel, while karaoke, trivia, and Disney character meet and greets ensure every minute aboard is exciting.

There are even kids’ clubs to give parents a break to enjoy nightclubs, fitness facilities, or the adults-only pool.

Your cruise will stop at Castaway Cay if visiting a Caribbean or Bahamian island. This island is exclusively for cruise line guests. Your day at Castaway Cay will include food and refreshments, beach access, pools and water slides, trails, and yoga classes.

Oh, and there’s all-you-can-eat ice cream, which will delight children of all ages.

The family-centric staterooms offer television with in-room movies, a fridge, plenty of storage, and split bathrooms so the family can maintain its privacy.

4. Carnival Cruise Line

It’s time to get away on a Carnival Cruise Line.

This vacation experience can be anything you want, from relaxing and rejuvenating (with adult-only retreats and spas) to exciting with breathtakingly tall water slides, Family Feud Live, and the SkyRide overlooking the ocean.

The kids can hop around and burn off energy at the bungee Sky Zone, make a new friend at the Build-A-Bear Workshop at Sea, play mini golf, spend the day at the arcade, or compete in a friendly game of basketball.

Of course, with a ropes course, IMAX theaters, and a space program for kids 2 to 11, there’s always something for families to do together.

A stateroom or suite can accommodate your entire brood, whether there are only a few of you or a larger group. The rooms have an extra bathroom, a TV, and climate control.

Some rooms even connect so your kids can feel independent while you keep a watchful eye over them.

A Carnival Cruise Line vacation can take you across Greenland, the Panama Canal, Asia, the South Pacific, the Transatlantic, New Guinea, the South Pacific, New Zealand, the Panama Canal, Hawaii, New England, the Bahamas, Canada, Alaska, Europe, the Transpacific, Bermuda, and the Bahamas.

Onboard activities for all tastes are available. Princess and Discovery have an immersive, unique Discovery at SEA Enrichment Program that lets you see this planet and its inhabitants in engaging ways.

The Festivals of the World Program will introduce your family (especially the kiddos) to new cultures as they celebrate Mexican fiestas, Carnaval de Panama, Celtic Festival, and more.

Take a dip in a pool, chill out in a hot tub, play every sport imaginable (from shuffleboard to mini golf), and catch a tan at the Reef Family Splash Zone, a mini water park with games, pools, and water features.

So where would you and the family like to go?

You can take a short excursion that lasts between three and six days or visit such parts of the world as the South Pacific, Panama Canal, Europe, Tahiti, Asia, Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, New England, Antarctica, Japan, South America, Canada, New Zealand, the Pacific Coast, Australia, and California.

That’s only scratching the surface! The 4D cinema experience makes you feel like you’re racing on a freeway or experiencing other immersive scenes without leaving your seat. The Robotron is a thrilling amusement ride, and the Flight Simulator lets you take to the skies while still safely on the ship.

The kids can also play at the arcade, practice driving in the F1 simulator, or play some sports. Live entertainment abounds, with options for just the adults or the entire family.

The family-friendly staterooms include buffet access and a discounted drink package so you can feed the family for less.

7. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises are catered to families, with excursions, programs, and activities for kids and adults. They even offer autism-friendly activities, which are highly inclusive.

The kids and teen programs include Camp at Sea for kids between 3 and 12. Participants have themed parties, play sports, do arts and crafts, and engage in treasure hunts.

The Teen Club offers culinary classes, parties, and video game competitions.

The Retreat is the most family-friendly lodging option, as it includes more than 2,500 square feet of lounge space, an ample veranda, and a private sundeck.

Celebrity Cruises stop at more than 300 cruise ports, including Africa, New Zealand, Alaska, New England, Galapagos, the Caribbean, Europe, Bermuda, Asia, the Mediterranean, the Panama Canal, the Transatlantic, Mexico, the Pacific Coastal, South America, and the Transpacific.

The 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships

You have some great ideas for where to book your next family cruise, but now the question is which ship specifically is right for your group?

I’m here to help you make this all-important choice by reviewing 12 of the best cruise ships for kids.

1. Disney Dream

Disney magic comes to life on the Disney Dream, an enchanting cruise experience.

The warm, opulent common areas add extravagance to your vacation, while kid-friendly activities and amenities will keep the young ones entertained.

Treat them to Vanellope’s Sweets, a candy shop with walls of candy as far as the eye can see. Disney entertainment comes to the big stages as only this brand can, with costumed characters singing, dancing, and entertaining guests all day or evening.

The staterooms have portholes that allow the kids to glance out at the ocean whenever they wish, and with family-centric amenities at every turn, you might not want to disembark!

2. Wonder of the Seas

The Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas embarks from Cape Canaveral and island hops the entire cruise, including a stop at Perfect Day at Coco Cay, the Royal Caribbean’s own private island only for cruise guests.

Kids will fall in love with the Wonder Playscape, which offers puzzles, games, climbing walls, and slides. Pool decks throughout will let you take a much-needed load off.

Perhaps you and the family are brave enough to try the 10-story Ultimate Abyss water slide!

Some staterooms overlook the majesty of the sea, and others have a virtual balcony. All rooms include Wi-Fi, spa features, and room service.

3. Disney Magic

You have so many ways to experience the wonder of a Disney Cruise Line vacation, including the Disney Magic.

This inviting ship is the home of D Lounge, the family-friendly hangout zone with dance parties, games, and hours upon hours of fun.

The kids can manage the Avengers during the Avenger’s Academy ride, visit the Mickey Mouse Club, receive a makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (knights for boys and princesses for girls), or ride dizzying, spiraling water slides.

The nautical-themed staterooms are cozy and spacious for families, and split bathrooms, portholes, and private verandas also set the mood.

4. Symphony of the Seas

Calling itself “The Sound of Wonder,” the Symphony of the Seas through the Royal Caribbean is new and improved for families.

Hit up Sugar Beach and buy some candy, ride three water slides in one on The Perfect Storm, or learn to hang ten on the FlowRider. You’ll spend the days in the most fun ways possible.

Wonderland has whimsical food the kids will go gaga over. There are cocktails for the parents that are just as inspired.

Snuggle up to the Ultimate Family Suite, which boasts a private game room, a hot tub, table tennis facilities, and karaoke.

5. Mardi Gras

Carnival’s Mardi Gras is one of its latest and greatest creations, so you should expect the ultimate in entertainment.

Take a ride on the Bolt sea coaster for some exciting thrills. You can also spend a sunny day at the WaterWorks water park with a dumping bucket and countless water slides, then close out the day by seeing a show. It’s all waiting for you.

The Family Harbor Staterooms in the Family Harbor Lounge is where you need to be. Kids eat free at most restaurants in the lounge, and you can take advantage of entertainment like board games and movies. Babysitting is also available.

6. MSC Meraviglia

Departing from Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, set sail for a world of adventure aboard the MSG Meraviglia. This ship sails to New England and Canada and delights the entire voyage.

Stroll through the 315-foot Galleria Meraviglia promenade, shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, or simply enjoying the beauty of it all.

Dive into the Horizon pool, which is open day and night (although there are dances and parties at night, so maybe visit sans kids).

Your kids will adore the F1 simulators, full-sized bowling alley, sportsplex, and Polar Aquapark with its sloping, looping enclosed slides.

Mini and Juniors Clubs give the kids a safe and fun place to play if you need to drop them off, as the rooms are bright, colorful, and full of toys.

7. Disney Wish

The Disney Cruise Line collection has recently expanded, adding Disney Wish to the ever-growing fleet. This ship has some claims to fame you’ll only find here, such as theatrical Frozen or Avengers -themed dining experiences.

Be one of the first to experience the Disney Unchartered Adventure, an immersive water experience with more than 700 feet of tubes and music, animations, special effects, and lighting. The experience ends by riding down a lazy river, so dress to get wet!

The Hero Zone is another standout the kids should love. They can compete with one another gameshow-style, play on the game floor or playground, and see who’s victorious on the sports court.

8. Carnival Panorama

Set sail to the Transpacific and Mexico on the Carnival Panorama through a Carnival Cruise Line. The 1,055-foot ship that weighs over 133,000 tons will put the whole family in a festive mood.

Laugh until you cry at The Punchliner Comedy Club, which also offers entertainment for adults.

The Carnival Panorama has plenty of Dr. Suess-themed entertainment the young ones will love, such as Dr. Suess Bookville, the Suess-a-palooza Parade, the Suess-a-palooza Story Time, and the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.

Zumbini is a Zumba class for kids two to five that will have their little bodies moving and grooving. There’s also a Night Owls overnight stay for the children, which is like one big sleepover!

9. Allure of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International invites families to sail away on the Allure of the Seas, an award-winning ship for family entertainment.

Included with your stay are kids and teen programs and access to the H2O Zone Water Park. The park boasts waterfalls, water cannons, pools, and sculptures the kids can climb. Geysers send water high into the sky, splashing down and refreshing your children all afternoon.

Dry off and play table tennis, ride a zipline, partake in an interactive game show, or watch an outdoor movie under the stars in the pool. The projector screen is 220 feet so there isn’t a bad seat in the house!

10. Norwegian Joy

The Norwegian Joy starts in the Mexican Riviera and wraps up its journey at the Panama Canal but alternately travels from Miami to the Caribbean. The ship is nearly 1,100 feet long and weighs more than 160,000 tons, so she’s quite heavy.

Fostering family togetherness on a ship like the Norwegian Joy is simple. You can take the twists and turns behind the wheel of the Joy Speedway, play a heart-thumping game of laser tag, or tee off at mini golf.

There’s so much more here. The Galaxy Pavilion offers a thrilling race-themed dark ride. Get your kicks at the Aqua Park, a water park for tweens and teens. The Norwegian Joy even has a Kids’ Aqua Park for the little ones.

11. Celebrity Equinox

Make your next family vacation something truly special on the Celebrity Equinox through the Celebrity Cruise Line. Deck 15 has all the amenities a family needs.

For instance, you and the kids can learn how to blow glass at the Hot Glass Studio, which is not something you see on every cruise ship.

How about some croquet or bocce on the Lawn Club? The kids’ club will watch your children between three and 12, offering lunch, dinner, and overnight stays if needed, and the ship even offers babysitting services in your cabin.

12. Norwegian Encore

Traverse the world on the Norwegian Encore, traveling from Alaska to Seattle or from the Caribbean to Miami. Adventure calls on the Encore, including many of the fun activities for families featured on other Norwegian cruise ships.

3. Explore Underwater In Cozumel

Cozumel is a world apart, a paradisiacal slice that enamors all visitors with its Caribbean panache and historic streets. There's much to do and much to see on a Mexico vacation, but a lot can be done during a short visit to Cozumel. Snorkeling and diving in Cozumel  is a must to get to know this region's gorgeous waters. The best spots for families are Paradise Reef, El Cielo and Chankanaab.

If you're looking for a day at the beach, look no further than Palancar, a haven of sun and sand, and one of the most family-friendly attractions in Cozumel. The area has a beach club renting snorkeling gear for a great price (around $10 each), an eatery, and a wonderful and shallow underwater world you can explore with your kids.

4. Enjoy Open Spaces In Colorful Mérida

A cultural hub in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula , Mérida merges history and modernity and welcomes visitors of all ages to its many plazas, museums, lanes and markets. A place your family will be able to see as well as taste, Mérida is a colorful and soulful destination that will quickly become a family favorite.

A popular stop for families is the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, a world-renowned museum dedicated to the ancient Maya culture with an impressive collection of more than 1,200 artifacts, like sculptures from Ek' Balam and Chichén Itzá. The building housing this collection is a work of art in itself. Inaugurated in 2012, the building resembles a ceiba tree, a sacred Maya symbol of connectivity with heaven and the underworld.

For a taste of daily life in Mérida, take your family to Plaza Grande. The large and leafy square is dotted with benches and has space for the kiddos to play. Expect food carts, live music and performances, and artisan creations, especially during the weekends.

Add Kohunlich to your list of kid-friendly places in Mexico. This archeological site rests inside a dense jungle. Dating from the Preclassic period (A.D. 100-200), the site is home to a pyramid known as Templo de los Mascarones, featuring eight masks. The structure's design is reminiscent of the Olmec tradition of using exaggerated facial features. Another set of ruins your kids will enjoy exploring is 27 Escalones or the 27 steps, which holds what is left of a large residential area. The family can play pretend here and try to discover buried artifacts.

Cruise Tips for Families

Cozumel, Mexico with Kids [CRUISE PORT GUIDE]

Last updated November 14, 2019

What to Do with Kids in Cozumel Mexico - Cruise Port Guide for Families

Located 12 miles off the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel is Mexico’s largest inhabited island.

The island is rated one of the top diving destinations in the world thanks to the second largest coral reef in the world.

In addition to spectacular diving, Cozumel is also known for their white powdery beaches, thriving markets and restaurants and proximity to popular visitor sites like the Mayan (San Gervasio)  and Tulum Ruins .

Cozumel is a very popular port of call for Western Caribbean cruise itineraries.

There are over 3 million cruise ship passengers that visit Cozumel each year.

Currency:  Mexican Peso, US Dollar

Primary Language Spoken:  Spanish, English

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock?

There are 3 cruise ship piers in Cozumel – all of which are on west side of the island.

Punta Langosta is located in downtown Cozumel. Cruise passengers walk off their ship, cross over a pedestrian bridge into a shopping plaza which then leads out into the city (San Miguel).

The tourist information office is located at the end of the pier by the Punta Langosta shopping plaza.

International Pier is the island’s oldest pier and a 10-minute taxi ride from downtown San Miguel. The walk to downtown San Miguel is a pretty one as it’s along the coast line but it is a lengthy one – approximately 30 minutes.

Puerta Maya is 1/2 mile south of International Pier. Carnival Cruise Lines built this pier and is touted by some as a superficial replica of the real Mexico. Store and restaurant prices are inflated here to reflect the commissions the businesses pay cruise lines to be in this area.

When there are many ships in port, some will anchor outside Punta Langosta pier with tenders taking cruise passengers into Cozumel.

Getting Around Cozumel

Taxi / Taxi Van – There is no shortage of taxis around the three cruise docks. It’s the most economical way to get around Cozumel and many make multiple trips from the piers to popular tourist spots like Chankannab Park and the beach clubs that offer all-day resort/activity passes for cruisers. Just be sure to agree on a price before getting into the vehicle. All drivers are required show a rate card to show fares from the pier to popular tourist spots.

Car Rental – Car seats are not available in taxis or taxi vans so if you require one for your child, your only option is to rent a car and request a car seat. Most attractions and points of interest are close to all three cruise ship piers so if you are OK with holding your children in your lap like the locals do, it might be easier to take a taxi than renting a car.

Walking – If you’re not interested in visiting a tourist attraction or the beaches, you won’t need transportation to explore downtown San Miguel or the area around the three piers. There are plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants within walking distance of each of them.

Kid Friendly Beaches and Beach Clubs for Cruisers in Cozumel Mexico

Kid Friendly Beaches in Cozumel

If you’re driving along the east or west coastlines, you’ll find many spot snorkel, swim or play in the sand. This can be done with no additional cost other than your taxi fare or rental car cost however there are no washrooms or change rooms, beach chairs or umbrellas to protect you from the sun.

For a small fee, check out these popular kid-friendly beaches near Cozumel’s cruise ports.

Paradise Beach –  For a budget friendly beach day head to Paradise Beach – only a 10 minute cab ride from the Puerta Maya and International Pier cruise ports. Expect to pay $4-5/person for a one way cab ride to the beach. ($4-5 USD/person one way).

Entrance to Paradise Beach is $3 with a $10 minimum food purchase (kids under 6 are exempt) and includes a beach chair, access to the swimming pool and of course the beach. For an additional fee guest can access the inflatable water park and water sports equipment. Bathrooms, showers, taxi stand, life vests and locker rentals ($4 USD/day) are other amenities available at Paradise Beach. The beach is a bit rocky in some areas so bring water shoes if you have them. Advance reservations are not required but this beach fills up quickly when there are several cruise ships in port.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park – Located on the southern tip of the island, Punta Sur is the largest ecological reserve in Cozumel. Families can combine a beach day with some time exploring Cozumel’s wilder habitats.  Families can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a bird’s-eye view of the island or visit the lagoon to learn about crocodiles, iguanas, fish and birds.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is open Monday to Saturday from 9AM to 4PM and admission ($14 USD/adult, $8 USD/child 3 to 11 years old) includes access to the lighthouse, beach and a museum. Onsite amenities include restrooms, outdoor showers, restaurants, snack bars, on duty lifeguard, beach chairs, hammocks and snorkeling equipment.

Chankanaab National Park – Many cruise lines offer excursions to Chankanaab National Park and there’s a good reason for it. This national park packs a lot activities and entertainment in one space. It is open Monday to Saturday from 8AM to 4PM and admission is $21 for adults and $14 for kids (3 to 11 years old) . Guests get access to a beautiful man-made sand beach and can spend a few hours relaxing in a beach lounger, hammock or under the palapas. They also can spend some time exploring the reef, lagoon or botanical garden, watch the sea lion show or visit the crocodile exhibit.

There are bathrooms, change rooms and showers here for guests to use. Restaurants, lockers and snack bars are other amenities offered here so make sure you remember to bring some extra cash with you. It is recommended you arrive before 11:30AM as beach chairs and hammocks go very quickly here.

Beach Clubs are Cozumel’s answer to providing a beach experience with extra amenities – think aquatic parks, splash pads for kids, all you can drink and eat packages,  water sports and horseback riding tours. You’ll find many of them lining the oceanfront and almost all taxi drivers can recommend which one would be best for your family. The most popular family-friendly beach clubs are:

  • Mr. Sanchos
  • Playa Planacar
  • Nachi Cocum

7 best Mexico cruises 2024

Melinda Crow

Editor's note: This guide has been updated with the latest information.

Cruises to Mexico have an appeal that's hard to match.

Pacific Coast itineraries cover both Baja California (with stops in Ensenada), and the area farther south considered the Mexican Riviera (featuring the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta). Where else can you spend the morning whale watching from a small boat, followed by an afternoon of shopping or enjoying authentic Mexican cuisine?

The ports on Mexico's eastern coast are often lumped together with other Central American ports or island destinations on Western Caribbean cruises . Do a bit of digging, and you can find three- to five-night cruises from Galveston, Texas; New Orleans; and Mobile, Alabama, that visit only Mexican ports, including Cozumel, Costa Maya and Progreso.

Beaches and water sports, as well as eating and drinking, are the primary attractions on cruises to Mexico. Both coasts offer ample opportunity to play in the sun and sand. The best Mexico cruises have lengthy port stops that provide plenty of time to explore, plus time on board the ship to relax and decompress.

You might even be able to cruise to Mexico without a passport if your cruise begins and ends in the same U.S. port.

So, what's the best cruise to Mexico? Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line run year-round cruises from the Los Angeles area and Galveston ports, while Princess Cruises, Holland America , Norwegian Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises and Disney Cruise Line offer seasonal cruises to Mexico from the West Coast.

Occasionally, you can find luxury cruises to the Mexican Riviera on lines like Silversea and Regent Seven Seas . American Queen Voyages and UnCruise Adventures offer unique small-ship opportunities to cruise Mexican ports on both coasts.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

We scoured all the options and came up with the best Mexico cruises to help narrow your choices. Here's what we found.

3-night Baja cruise on Carnival Radiance

kid friendly cruises to mexico

Carnival Radiance gets the nod for having a year-round schedule of short escapes to Mexico.

Carnival Cruise Line 's west coast Mexico cruises sail from the port of Long Beach, which is a fun destination in its own right, with beaches, water sports and the Aquarium of the Pacific.

Carnival Radiance (formerly Carnival Victory) underwent a complete refit in 2021, adding a dedicated comedy club, top-deck water attractions and the first-ever chicken joint from Shaquille O'Neal, aptly named Big Chicken .

The ship goes to Ensenada and back with one fun day at sea. Water sports and whale watching in winter are among the top activities in Ensenada for Carnival cruisers. For a local lunch in port, order fish tacos; Ensenada claims to have invented the dish. Some also claim Ensenada is the original home of the margarita. Drink enough of those, and it won't matter if it's true or not. If margaritas aren't your thing, there are popular wineries in port worth checking out.

Who should go : It's no secret that Carnival's Fun Ships are known as party ships. This short hop to Mexico is ideal for residents of the Western states looking for an escape any time of year. The ship's atmosphere is enthusiastic and fun, which spills into Ensenada on the single port day of the cruise.

4-night Baja cruise with Catalina Island on Disney Wonder

kid friendly cruises to mexico

Disney Wonder is one of Disney Cruise Line 's oldest and smallest ships, carrying only 2,700 passengers. However, it's packed with Disney adventures, including a musical stage production of "Frozen," character meet-ups and the most family-friendly cabins at sea. Wonder sails to Mexico from San Diego during the fall and winter.

Not every four-night cruise on Wonder includes Catalina Island, but if you can snag one that does, it's a huge bonus of family fun. Activities in the port of Avalon on Catalina include an amazing zip-line course of five lines. Soaring along the island's hillsides 600 feet above the beaches below, the adventure course takes over two hours to complete.

If your crew isn't into highspeed zipping, try a backcountry bison expedition or a relaxing day at the beach. Catalina is a charming island with a European feel, memorable food and a fascinating history. The second port on the itinerary is Ensenada, where the wildlife-watching or beach fun can continue.

Who should go: Disney Wonder is an ideal ship for family cruise travel from the West Coast. Features include the Marvel Superhero Academy inside the Disney Oceaneer Club, the activity space for kids. You'll have family-friendly accommodations on board, most with split bathrooms (one with toilet and sink, the other with bath-shower combo and sink). Parents have plenty of opportunities to enjoy a night out without the kids, dining at the adults-only Palo specialty restaurant or sampling an adult beverage at the After Hours entertainment district.

5-night Mexico cruise with Cabo overnight on Majestic Princess

kid friendly cruises to mexico

Princess Cruises ' Majestic Princess is one of the largest ships that seasonally visits Mexico from Los Angeles. The vessel, which was originally built for the Chinese market, has been Americanized, but it still features some nods that include upscale onboard shopping boutiques like Coach and Bulgari, plus a relaxing enclosed top-deck lounge with gathering spaces and faux topiaries.

The ship sails five-night voyages that offer overnights in Cabo San Lucas. There are also some sea days mixed in.

After all those other cruise ships say adios to Cabo, cruisers on board Majestic Princess can explore the city's nightlife. Street taco tour, anyone? Tequila flights? How else can you enjoy late-night freshly fried churros on a street corner?

Who should go: This cruise is for anyone who enjoys exploring port cities more in-depth than what's offered by a standard port call and who appreciates less of a party atmosphere. Daytime activities in Cabo include sport fishing, wildlife watching, boat rides, camel rides, kayaking, parasailing and snorkeling. Add in evening tasting tours, and you're set.

6- and 7-night Mexico cruises plus Roatan on Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas

kid friendly cruises to mexico

Royal Caribbean' s Harmony of the Seas is one of the largest vessels ever to sail from Galveston, and there's a shiny new terminal designed to handle the behemoth.

Part of the line's Oasis Class , which includes the world's largest cruise ships, Harmony of the Seas carries 5,479 passengers at double occupancy. The ship features an open-air AquaTheater at its aft for high-diving and acrobatic shows, an ice skating rink, some of the most extravagant Royal Caribbean suites across the fleet and a park with live plants in the center of the ship.

There are several variations for sailings of both durations, but both offer ample beach time at Cozumel and Costa Maya, plus a third stop in Roatan, Honduras. The rest of the trip is all about fun on the ship as you cruise the Gulf waters for two to three sea days, depending on itinerary length.

Who should go: A Mexico cruise on Harmony of the Seas is ideal for big-ship lovers. Inexpensive flights into Houston's two airports make it accessible to at least a dozen central U.S. states. And for Texans who can drive to the port in less than a day, the fun of a beach day on Galveston Island before or after the cruise makes this sailing an easy choice.

7-night Mexican Riviera cruise on Carnival Panorama

kid friendly cruises to mexico

Carnival Panorama is loaded with Carnival-style fun. From a jaw-dropping, nail-biting ropes course high above the decks to waterslides and an indoor trampoline park, this ship is a crash course in playtime. The seven-night itineraries sail from Long Beach and include all the main western Mexico ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, where the ship stays into the evening hours.

With three sea days, cruisers have plenty of time to enjoy the ship. The best part is that this floating thrill ride cruises this itinerary year-round.

Who should go: It's a great choice for families with tweens and teens because so many of the onboard activities are geared to them. Couples sailing without kiddos can enjoy adults-only areas like the Serenity sun deck retreat, a plush Cloud 9 Spa and Havana staterooms with their exclusive pool deck.

7-Night Expedition to Baja California with UnCruise

kid friendly cruises to mexico

UnCruise Adventures does Mexico with an entirely different approach to cruising.

Leave the party ships and the thrill rides behind for an expedition adventure aboard the 66-passenger Safari Voyager. The ship sails from La Paz, Mexico, between January and June, taking passengers in search of gray whales, whale sharks, rays and an amazing variety of sea life, as well as wildlife on dry land.

Activities include kayaking, Zodiac boat rides, snorkeling, hiking and, of course, downtime at the beach. Safari Explorer is somewhat basic in its amenities. You can expect cabins that are quite cozy, but ample public space on deck to watch for sealife and meet your fellow passengers.

UnCruise fares include all meals, excursions, equipment, beverages (including alcohol) and airport transfers, leaving you free to enjoy the adventure.

Who should go: This cruise is for physically fit adults and families with kids ages 8-17 seeking adventure in the wilds and waters of Baja, California.

7-night Mexican Riviera cruise on Discovery Princess

kid friendly cruises to mexico

When Princess Cruises' newest ship isn't in Alaskan waters, it can be found cruising to the Mexican Riviera from the Los Angeles port at San Pedro.

The seven-night itinerary includes Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta, plus three sea days to enjoy the ship, which carries 3,660 guests. Discovery Princess brings a bit of elegance to the Riviera, with afternoon tea and the ability to order the Ultimate Balcony Breakfast to your cabin's private veranda (for an additional charge).

While Discovery Princess is similar to most Princess ships in design and decor, it has something no other ship in the fleet has — two Sky Suites. Each suite has two bedrooms and a luxurious 1,000-square-foot balcony for unrivaled views.

Who should go: This is the best Mexico cruise for those seeking Princess' relaxed upscale mode of cruising. Children are always welcome on Princess, and there are plenty of connecting rooms and cabin options with third and fourth bunks. Though the ship offers a youth program, don't expect waterslides and thrill rides. The vibe on board is low-key, and the average age is a bit older when compared to Royal Caribbean or Carnival.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Mexico are the ones that suit your travel personality. Whether you're looking for a party atmosphere or adventure, there's a ship waiting to take you to Mexico any time of year.

Focus your search on round-trip itineraries from major ports in Los Angeles, San Diego and Galveston. You'll also find options for cruises to Mexico from San Francisco, New Orleans and even Mobile, Alabama.
