Vonlane – an luxury bus ride.

Vonlane Bus in Downtown Houston

I took the opportunity to ride Vonlane Bus from Houston to Dallas on a Saturday morning. Vonlane is an luxury (or first class) intercity bus service that travels to/from Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio Texas. This bus service consider (or promote) themselves “first class plane experience of the bus”.

This blog is a review and experience in riding Vonlane from Houston to Dallas.

Two Vonlane bus parked at Downtown Houston.

Purchasing the ticket

I bought the tickets on Vonlane’s website. The trip that I’ve purchased was from Houston to Dallas, and the cost for one way ticket was $114 . Note that Houston has two Vonalne Bus Stops:

  • Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Houston
  • Hyatt Regency Hotel Hotel in Uptown Houston (Galleria)

On this trip, the Vonlane bus stop to Dallas will start at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Houston.

Before purchasing the ticket, you can choose a seat. The Vonlane bus has 22 seats. The bus seating arrangement is configured two to one (except the back, where there is four seats and a table in the middle). Any seats cost at $114.

I’ve chose seat 1C (front row seat by the entrance/exit door).

A map of the bus seats.

The bus departs to Dallas at 9:00 a.m. in Downtown Houston at the intersection: Louisiana Street and Dallas Street (right by the Hyatt Regency Hotel ). The arrival time to Dallas is 12:45 p.m.

Boarding starts 15 minutes before departure. If it is raining or the weather is unpleasant, you can wait inside the Hyatt Regency Hotel Lobby area. In the lobby area, there are small restaurants and several sofa to sit. Keep in mind that Hyatt DOES NOT announce anything. Keep track of your time.

  • USB Type-A Charger located at below the arm rest
  • Electrical outlet located at the wall
  • Attachable tray (the bus attendant will hand out the tray)
  • If sitting at the back of the bus, there is a table in the middle.

At 9:00 a.m., the bus closes the door and pulls away from the bus stop. Three minutes later, the cabin attendant grabs the microphone and welcomes everyone on the bus. She introduces herself and the bus operator. After introducing herself, she played the Vonlane Safety Video .

After the video, she offered passengers if they want a blanket.

Twenty minutes after departure, the cabin attendant offers a cookie and later she brought a snack basket. In that basket, there are chips, peanuts, cookies, granola bar or candies.

At the back of the bus

After the snacks, the bus attendant returns and takes a note of the drinks and breakfast. Vonlane offers coffee, soft drinks, and beer/wine (extra cost). On this journey, I asked for sparkling water.

Quaker Oatmeal for breakfast

For breakfast, I had Quaker Oatmeal. Other option for breakfast were fruit bowl and yogurt. If this trip were to be noon or afternoon, the bus attendant would offer sandwich or salad.

There is one restroom that is located at the back of the bus. The restroom was clean and modern.

Houston, texas.

In Houston, Texas, the largest public transportation is Houston METRO . The Vonlane Bus Stop in Downtown Houston has numerous of options to travel around Houston. In Downtown Houston, patron can use METRORail (all rail lines), METRO Bus, Uber, Lyft or taxi. The nearest station to Vonlane is Main Street Square (METRORail Red Line stops at that station). The second nearest station is Theater District (METRORail Green and Purple Line stops at that station).

METRORail Red Line goes to Texas Medical Center (TMC), Midtown, NRG Stadium, Museum District, Rice University, Hermann Park, Houston Community College, Houston Zoo, University of Houston-Downtown, Houston’s north side.

METRORail Purple Line goes to southeast Houston, University of Houston and Texas Southern University.

The Vonlane Bus Stop in Dallas is located at Double Tree Hotel at Love Field Airport. At that stop, the nearest DART Rail Station is Inwood/Love Field Station (DART Rail Green and Orange Lines stops at that station). However, the walk to that station is far. DART Rail Green Line goes Downtown Dallas, Victory Plaza, Fair Park (State Fair of Texas) and northwest Dallas (you can also transfer to Denton County Transportation Authority A-train to Denton, Texas).

The ride between Houston to Dallas was AWESOME! I’ve really enjoyed the ride! I rather travel Vonlane than taking a plane to Dallas (or other major cities in Texas). I might take Vonlane again to Austin in the near future.

  • The bus operator and cabinet attendant were professional and friendly.
  • Seating was comfortable and the leg room is spacious! Me being comfortable, I felt that the trip was quick.
  • The food was okay. Although, Vonlane allows you to bring your own food onboard the bus.
  • The restroom was spotless and modern. Although the restroom is a little bumpy during the ride.
  • The WiFi is decent and goes up to 7 megabytes a second. It is good for browsing and working. However, it is not recommended to stream 4K videos.
  • Inside the bus is a little dark with dark blue neon lights on the ceiling. The noise level of this bus was low (most people hardly talked loud in the bus).
  • Houston: Vonlane Bus Stop is near to Houston METRORail and METRO Bus.
  • Dallas: The distance from the Vonalne Bus Stop and DART Rail Station is too far. Unfortunately, I do not recommend transferring to DART Rail if going to Downtown or around the Dallas area. I took Uber to Downtown Dallas.

Yes, you can travel in luxury on a bus: A few bus lines around the country are providing luxury bus service on intercity routes up to about 300 miles, especially in areas where air and rail service is either sparse or expensive. To qualify as “luxury,” my primary requirement is that a line must provide one-by two seating, with extra legroom, in a full size intercity bus, along with an onboard lavatory, Wi-Fi and/or streaming TV, snack/drink service, and no-fee baggage checking. That’s all typically much more comfortable than a plane, and sometimes more comfortable than Amtrak. Fares are around double regular bus fares, because the lines fit only 22 to 35 seats into buses that nominally hold 55 to 60 seats, in addition to extra passenger amenities.

I found 10 lines that qualify, listed here alphabetically, with samples of posted one-way fares. Most lines employ capacity-controlled pricing: As buses fill up, fares for remaining seats increase. Most lines also offer a variety of round-trip, multi-ride, frequent-traveler membership, student, and similar discounts. Most require reservations, and pick up and leave travelers on public-street loading zones, or sometimes at hotels.

Editors’ Note: Included fares are accurate at time of publication.

9 Tips to Finally Stop Overpacking

BestBus is one of the many bus lines that operate between New York City and the Washington, D.C. area. Although most of its trips use conventional intercity buses, one or two daily trips feature “Prime” service that offers the necessary luxury mix. At least one trip operates most days nonstop between New York Penn Station and Washington-area drop off points at DuPont Circle and Union Station and three stops in suburban Virginia. The Prime fare for February starts at around $47 one-way, compared with $38-40 for the regular service; trips take four hours and more.

Amtrak offers frequent competition, with trips taking from a bit under three hours (Acela, from $155) to 3:30 hours (Northeast Regional, hovering around at $115 with fares below $100 available on specific dates).

C&J Bus Lines

C&J operates at least two daily trips, all with luxury buses, on two main routes:

  • Connecting Boston with Dover, Portsmouth, and Seabrook New Hampshire. Trips take 55 minutes to Seabrook, at $13.99, to 1:30 to 2 hours to Dover at $14.99, and on average 1:15 to 1:30 to Portsmouth at $14.99.
  • Connecting New York with Andover, Massachusetts as well as Seabrook and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Trips take 4 hours to Andover, fares are $74. Trips to Seabrook take between 4:30 and 4:45 and trips to Portsmouth take roughly 5:15, fares for both are $84.

Concord Coach Lines

Concord operates several trunk routes, but offers its luxury “Plus Bus” on one daily round trip each on its route connecting New York City with Portland, Maine (6 hours, $79).

Amtrak connects New York with Portland, but a train trip requires changing trains and stations in Boston. The shortest connection for a trip in early March takes six hours and costs $84, including bus transfer between stations in Boston. Competitive air service to Portland for a similar time frame starts at $45 one way.

10 Tips for Long-Distance Amtrak Trips

Dartmouth Coach

Dartmouth Coach operates luxury bus trips at least once daily with extra weekend service between New York City and Hanover/Dartmouth and Lebanon, New Hampshire. Trips take about five hours; fares start at $89. This company is affiliated with Concord Coach Lines and appears to offer a similar luxury product. Dartmouth also operates from the Boston area, but only with conventional buses.

Amtrak does not go near Dartmouth or Lebanon. Flights from New York to Lebanon start at around $134 one way, and require about four hours with a plane change at Boston.

Hampton Jitney

The Hampton Jitney operates between New York and the main eastern Long Island centers, including three to four daily luxury “Ambassador” service trips to/from Montauk, with additional trips to/from Amagansett. Montauk trips take 3:15; fares start at roughly $45.

The competition to the Hamptons is the Long Island Rail Road Montauk line. Montauk trips take 3:15 and cost $22.25 off-peak, $30.50 peak.

Interior of a luxury bus

Red Coach operates a complex network linking Miami with Tallahassee while also serving key intermediate stops. Although it also operates conventional buses, Red Coach operates luxury First Class runs several times daily between Miami and Tallahassee via Orlando. Miami-Tallahassee trips take about nine and a half hours, with fares starting at $99; Orlando-Miami trips take about 4 hours with fares starting at $45.

Red Coach competes with Amtrak, Brightline, and Tri-Met between some South Florida stops, but no rail line operates to/from Tallahassee or between Atlanta and Florida. Miami-Tallahassee nonstop flight fares start at roughly $150 round trip, taking two hours nonstop or over five hours with a layover.

7 Essential Multipurpose Tools for Travel

Tripper Bus Elite

Tripper Bus is one of the many lines that operate between New York City and the Washington DC area. The line runs between two and seven trips each day, and on most days one of those trips uses a luxury “Elite” bus. Trips run between New York City Penn Station area and stops in suburban Bethesda and  Arlington. Travel time is 4:00 hours; Elite class fares start around $60, compared with regular fares which start at $27. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak and airline competition.

Vamoose Gold

Vamoose is yet another New York-to-Washington bus line that operates a luxury service. “Gold Bus” trips operate three to four times per day between midtown Manhattan and stops in Bethesda, Maryland, and Arlington and Lorton, Virginia. The trips take 4:00 to 4:30 hours to/from Bethesda; 4:40 to/from Arlington; and 5:00 to 5:30 to/from Lorton. Gold Bus fares start at $79, depending on time of day; regular fares start at $49. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak and airline competition.

Vonlane operates an extensive network of all-luxury bus routes connecting Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, and San Antonio. All stops are at city-center hotels except for Dallas, where the terminal is at a Love Field hotel. Sample fares from Houston to Fort Worth are $129; the trip takes four hours.

All Vonlane routes are serviced by multiple airlines, including Southwest. Sample nonstop airfares for Houston-Dallas in late February start at $154 one way, decreasing to under $100 for select dates in March. Amtrak operates one train daily between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth and one train daily Dallas-Austin-San Antonio. Coach fares Dallas-San Antonio start at $37 for a 10-hour trip.

The 16 Best Car Rental Booking Sites

Washington Deluxe

Washington Deluxe is the fourth (on my list) New York-Washington bus line that offers a deluxe option. “LUX” buses operate less than daily between New York/Penn Station and Washington/DuPont Circle. The trip takes 4:00 to 4:30; the fare starts at $35. See “BestBus” entry for Amtrak competition.

Luxury Houston-to-Dallas bus service launching April 20

Vonlane is launching its Houston-to-Dallas bus service on April 20 with a special price of $69 each way. But this isn't your typical form of public transportation.

You can arrive just five minutes before the departure time, so there's no sitting around wasting time in lines or in a terminal.

Once aboard, you'll enjoy large, comfortable seats with extra legroom and power plugs. Complimentary Wi-Fi meals, snacks and beverages are available, as is a business conference room and printer. You'll also get access to satellite TV and an attendant.

Photos: Luxury bus travel between Houston and Dallas

The trip takes about 3.5 hours each way, making it shorter than air travel when you factor in security and check-in at the airport. Vonlane warns, however, their buses aren't immune to traffic issues on I-45. Even still, the company claims to beat airlines' on-time performance records.

After the launch special ends, the fare will typically be about $100 each way, Vonlane says.

Since the system is in beta-testing, there are limitations as to who is eligible to renew and how many applications are accepted each day.

TPG's guide to luxury bus travel

Bill Fink

Given the ongoing challenges surrounding air travel — ranging from flight delays and cancellations to lost luggage and long airport queues — staying on the ground may be the easiest (and least stressful) way to get from point A to point B. While taking a road trip or traveling by train may take longer than flying, land travel has its benefits.

To start, the slower journey makes it possible to truly appreciate your surroundings, whether you're traveling between forested mountains or past beautiful city skylines. Not to mention, overland options are generally more environmentally friendly and less expensive than flying.

Sticking to ground transportation doesn't mean you have to make major sacrifices on comfort. Even previously cramped options like buses are evolving to attract all kinds of travelers, including those who enjoy a dose of luxury.

Gone are the days of standard buses being the only option for intercity travel. In recent years, luxury buses have emerged to provide travelers with a stylish take on the classic bus journey.

How exactly are luxury buses different from traditional options, and are they a good fit for you? We took a closer look at this elevated transportation option, including a few noteworthy routes, to find out.

Get the latest points, miles and travel news by signing up for TPG's free daily newsletter .

What is a luxury bus?

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Luxury buses offer a "first-class travel experience that combines the luxury and personal space of a private jet with the affordability and convenience of a motorcoach," according to The Jet , one of several luxury bus companies that launched in recent years.

Unlike regular buses, luxury options provide several comforts and services more commonly found in the first-class cabin of an airplane.

For example, more space is available between seats, as they're typically arranged in a 1-2 setup across aisles. As a result, you'll enjoy plenty of legroom and space for reclining your seat and using fold-out tables for work or snacking.

Additionally, luxury buses come with a number of conveniences, including free high-speed Wi-Fi as well as complimentary snacks and beverages. You'll also have access to a clean bathroom facility, plus various TV-viewing options and attendant services (on select routes).

Why should you take a luxury bus?

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

There are several reasons why a luxury bus may be the way to go the next time you travel.

To start, there's the price. A bus ride (even a luxury one) generally costs a fraction of what you would pay for a flight and transportation to and from an airport.

Then there's the convenience of using buses. Intercity buses typically depart from depots in city centers and often offer additional connections at rail and airport terminals, making them easy to reach. Plus, there are no security lines to endure, and you are not required to check in an hour before departure. If you're traveling with luggage, all you have to do is place your bag in the cargo area before you board.

Depending on where you're traveling, you may also find that buses are a more efficient way to reach your destination, as some cities do not offer flight or rail service. They're more environmentally friendly than driving your own car or flying, too, so you can feel good about your journey.

Why should you consider a luxury bus specifically? There is plenty of space as well as amenities on board. If you value having extra elbow room, enjoy creature comforts like snacks and drinks while in transit and want to pay the cheapest price possible, then you'll likely find a luxury bus appealing.

Which luxury bus routes should you consider?

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

The majority of luxury buses operate between major metropolitan areas and popular tourist destinations. While New York City is a hub for many luxury bus routes, others depart from places such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, Houston and Dallas.

There are numerous routes to consider for luxury bus travel, but three in particular stand out from others currently available.

The Jet: New York City to Washington, DC

The Jet luxury bus service runs its route between New York's Hudson Yards and Washington 's Metro Center six days a week. Offering enough space to accommodate a maximum of 14 people, The Jet provides passengers with lots of legroom at their wide seats. Each seat features a specially designed "motion-canceling" technology called HoverSeat designed to absorb all the bumps you may encounter during the ride.

While traveling to the nation's capital, you'll have access to free high-speed Wi-Fi and a restroom with high-end details reminiscent of what you'd find in a hotel bathroom (such as white subway tiles and black brass fixtures). Plus, you'll receive complimentary beverages (think: sodas, coffee, beer and wine) as well as snacks such as chips and trail mix from an onboard attendant. Bus tickets also include two free checked bags and two carry-on bags .

Traveling from New York to Washington takes about four hours and 15 minutes, and prices start at $99 for a one-way trip. Specific seats are available for reservation in advance.

Vonlane: Houston to Austin

Vonlane offers 22-person luxury buses for travel within Texas. While you'll find routes connecting several major cities in the Lone Star State — including Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio — the Houston-to-Austin itinerary is an especially popular option.

As you ride on a Vonlane bus, you can stay connected with free Wi-Fi from the comfort of an oversized leather seat that also features an extended recline and leg rest. You'll also enjoy complimentary food and drinks served by an onboard attendant; keep in mind that alcohol costs extra. Loaner noise-canceling headphones are free to borrow, as are items such as eye masks, neck pillows, blankets and phone and computer chargers.

The trip from Houston to Austin typically takes two hours and 45 minutes, and it costs at least $114 one-way.

Napaway: Washington, DC, to Nashville

For travel between Washington and Nashville, there's Napaway — a luxury bus operator with overnight sleeper coaches. Passengers book one of 18 "personal suites," which feature two seats that convert into lie-flat beds with memory foam mattress pads. Napaway also provides pillows and blankets for the trip.

Standard amenities include high-speed Wi-Fi, a selection of movies and TV shows to watch from personal devices, fold-out desks and sleep kits with eye masks, toothbrushes and earplugs. Complimentary bottled water is also available, though that's the extent of Napaway's onboard food and beverage options.

The 11-hour overnight Napaway itinerary departs Washington at 10 p.m. on Fridays and arrives in Nashville at 8 a.m. on Saturdays. Tickets cost a minimum of $125 for the one-way trip.

Bottom line

Most people don't consider bus travel to be a luxury experience thanks, in part, to the extra time it adds to the journey. However, several recently launched companies now provide more comfortable and upscale ways to hit the road.

Sure, you'll need to pay a little more for a luxury bus ticket than one in a regular coach, but the service is still an affordable option when compared to flying. Plus, you'll enjoy many of the same amenities you would receive at the front of a plane. So, you don't have to worry about squeezing into a tight space without the necessities to keep you comfortable.

I used a luxury bus service in Texas and it was one of the most relaxing coach rides I've been on

  • I took Vonlane, a luxury motorcoach company that operates between major Texas cities, from Dallas to Austin.
  • The $109 bus ride was comfortable and filled with complimentary WiFi, foods, and beverages.
  • The plush seats, steady WiFi, and great service made it feel like a business class flight.

Why take a personal car when you can take a bus.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Unless you're a public transit enthusiast, you might not hear that very often.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

But when the bus run by Vonlane, I bet you'd be more inclined to agree.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Vonlane is a luxury intercity motorcoach service that operates between major Lone Star State cities for $109.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

This ticket price can be double, maybe even quadruple, the price of your typical Megabus or Greyhound ticket …

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

… but that's because Vonlane isn't your average discount bus service.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

"I was never very happy with what I saw on the inside of a motorcoach," Alex Danza, founder and CEO of the company, told Insider. "It was almost worse than a commercial aircraft."

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

On Vonlane, there are no crowded rows, slow Wifi, or uncomfortable fabric seats that are often associated with budget motorcoach companies.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Instead, picture plush leather seats, complimentary snacks, and a friendly attendant. A sort of "private jet on wheels," according to the company.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

The Texas-based company isn't the only bus service targeting the luxury segment.

In fall 2021, the Jet launched a luxury motorcoach service with motion-canceling seats starting at $99.

But unlike Vonlane, which was founded much earlier in 2014, the Jet only operates between Washington, DC and New York City.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

And the two companies service different markets and target customers.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

"We've got a really good position in Texas. We're very defendable" Danza said, citing Vonlane's "robust" schedule.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

The company is now also exploring routes outside of Texas, including plans to begin services between Nashville and Atlanta this year.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

After the Nashville and Atlanta launch, it'll potentially begin a route between Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

And while the Jet targets leisure travelers, Vonlane's biggest customer base before the COVID-19 pandemic was business travelers, a once steady repeat customer base, Danza said.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Before Vonlane, most Texans either drove themselves or flew between cities, an "exhausting endeavor" for busy business travelers, Danza said.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

But unlike flying, Vonlane doesn't have any long security lines, boarding wait times, and slow WFi, saving travelers hours in their day.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

However, the once-reliable business traveler base became practically nonexistent overnight with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Vonlane was forced to cut back its schedules.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

In an attempt to supplement this slow-to-recover segment, the company has begun targeting leisure travelers by offering more weekend routes.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

At the start of the pandemic, Vonlane's customers were approximately 70% business and 30% leisure travelers. Now, that's been flipped.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Regardless, Vonlane's services and amenities could appeal to any traveler.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

I decided to try the service from Dallas to Austin, Texas, and my ride's driver Marvin and coach attendant Liz were two of the friendliest and warmest people I met on my Texas trip.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

I was so comfortable, it felt like my nearly three-and-a-half hours on the road went by in a flash.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Think of Vonlane as a business class plane ride on wheels, albeit much slower.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

There's even a safety video at the start of the ride reminiscent of the ones played on airplanes.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Vonlane also has an onboard attendant that functions similarly to a flight attendant …

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

… a clean, well-sized bathroom …

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

… complimentary snacks, beverages, and, on select rides, meals …

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

… and stable WiFi that was strong enough for me to feed my TikTok addiction.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

There were also plenty of outlets right by my seat.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Liz was the point person for all things amenities and services related: She checked the passengers in, passed out snacks and beverages, and patiently fielded every question.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

She was chipper and accommodating throughout the entire journey, and checked up on the passengers more than most flight attendants do.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

She even asked to hang my coat in the closet for me, a luxury I've never experienced on a motorcoach.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

The bus is separated by rows of single and double seats, which means there are no middle seats.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

I opted for a single-seat, leaving me neighbor-free and relaxed during my approximately three-and-a-half hours on the Texas road.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

And thankfully, the passenger seats were more comfortable than any budget bus I've ever been on.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

The leather seat was so large, it felt like I was being swallowed by the plush sides.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

When my seat was reclined and my footrest was up, it felt like I was sitting on an old but comfortable lounge chair.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Vonlane also offers its customers noise-canceling headsets, blankets, and pillows, creating a cocoon of plush padding and relaxation.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

But if I had wanted to work during the ride, I could've used the tabletop stored in the seatback in front of me. All you have to do is pull it out and click it into your seat.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

And while the rows weren't as spaced out as the Jet, I still had a comfortable distance from all the other passengers.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

The seats were great, but in my opinion, Vonlane's strongest suit was its complimentary mid-ride offerings.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

While I didn't take everything that was offered, it was nice knowing I had the option to.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

At the start of the trip, Liz offered the passengers a tray of items like eye masks, tissues, earplugs, toothbrushes, and Advil.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

She then came around and offered us an assortment of snacks like Oreos, granola bars, and nuts …

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

… as well as a variety of beverages like sodas, juices, and water. I ended up ordering hot tea to soothe my travelers stress.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

Passengers were also given several options for lunch, including my pick of a satisfyingly sweet croissant sandwich that was big enough for two meals.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

And towards the trip, Liz offered us a piping hot hand towel, the perfect send-off after hours on the road.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

But the ride was so comfortable, I could've easily spent another hour or two on the road with no complaints, and I've been known to get carsick.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

And unlike flying, I didn't have to spend hours in a security line and at the terminal. All I did was check in with Liz and find my pre-booked seat.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

My Vonlane experience had all of the luxuries of flying business class, but none of the airport lines, downtime, or inconveniences.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

All in all, my ride with the Texan service was one of the most relaxing coach rides I've ever been on.

luxury bus travel houston to dallas

But in my opinion, Vonlane's small touches — from the attendant to the seemingly endless options of food — made riding in the motorcoach a truly luxurious experience worthy of the $109 ticket.

Get on the Bus

Luxury motor coach expands commuter service from dallas to houston.

Vonlane, a luxury motor coach company that currently shuttles businesspeople between Dallas and Austin, is adding a new route to Houston beginning April 20. Founder and president Alex Danza says the new service is in response to hundreds of customers asking for an Interstate 45 option since the company launched last May .

“We’ve been hearing ‘please add Houston’ from the Dallas folks, so that’s where we’re going next,” Danza says. “We believe there will be a lot of riders for that route.”

Vonlane will run its luxury buses from Dallas to Houston at 6 am and 2 pm, and Houston to Dallas at 10 am and 6 pm, giving travelers total flexibility for day trips between the two cities.

“A Dallas person could go out on the 6 am and be in Houston by 9 or 9:30,” Danza says. “They get back on at 6 pm, and they’re home that night. They can get the full day of work in, and they are in a comfortable, spacious work environment where they can work on the way home to Dallas if they’re not done right at 6. Or they can recline, have a meal and watch ESPN.”

The Dallas port will continue to be the DoubleTree hotel across from Love Field, while the Houston route will begin and end at the Sheraton North Houston at George Bush Intercontinental. Danza says there are plans to increase routes and frequency as they add the custom-made coaches to the fleet, but it takes time to create a 16-person coach with high-end amenities such as wood floors, built-in Wi-Fi and satellite TV, and a conference room.

“We buy an empty shell with an engine and a transmission,” Danza says. “We take that empty shell to a converter — he makes all the NASCAR drivers’ motor homes — and there’s another six months for the interior, wood floors and seats. The hurdle is that it takes time, but as we bring more coaches online, we can add more to the Houston route and make it more robust.”

Danza adds that he hopes for Vonlane to have an Austin-Houston route set up by the end of 2015. The Dallas-Houston route will have a discounted $69 fare for one-way tickets from the April 20 launch through May 31.

Vonlane will begin service between Dallas and Houston on April 20.

Dallas tex-mex master to open eddie's cocina & cantina in el fenix space, raising children in dallas is surprisingly affordable, study finds, country's largest hot springs pool complex coming to grandscape in the colony, texas travel, texas cruises to no. 1 on new list of top states for summer road trips.

Dallas might not be at the top of the list when it comes to the best summer travel destinations, but the expansive Lone Star State is leading the rest of the nation as the No. 1 state for for summer road trips in 2024.

Texas' superior traveling potential was recognized in WalletHub's annual list of the best and worst states for summer road trips , which ranked all 50 states based on their road trip costs, safety, and activities. Over 32 metrics were considered for the study, including each state's average gas prices, road quality, and variety of attractions.

The top states are the ones that have plenty of fun things to do at relatively low costs, and provide "the best driving experience," according to WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe. Texas was also No. 1 in 2023 .

Texas earned 58.59 out of 100 total possible points, barely edging ahead of Minnesota (No. 2) and New York (No. 3), which earned 58.48 and 58.44 points, respectively.

Out of the three main categories in the report, Texas performed the best for its numerous attractions, ranking No. 5 nationwide. WalletHub specifically highlights zoos, botanical gardens, and amusement parks , but you can't forget about Texas' beautiful state parks, lakes, family-friendly resorts , or the beaches.

"There are plenty of things to make stops at for a day or even just a few hours while taking a road trip," the report said. "Even in between activities, the act of being on the road in Texas can be very enjoyable, since the state has over 9,500 miles of scenic byways."

Texas ranked just outside the top 10 for its costs of taking a road trip, landing at No. 11 nationally. Planning affordable meals and accommodations is a big factor on travelers' minds this summer, and WalletHub revealed Texas has the second-cheapest three-star hotel prices within a 10-mile radius of city centers during mid-July. The Lone Star State is also leading the U.S. with the highest number of lodging accommodations and restaurants per capita.

Unfortunately, Texas fell far behind other states when it comes to safety, coming in at No. 39. The report doesn't explain why Texas ranked so low, but it examined each state's road quality, car thefts per 1,000 residents, the number of uninsured drivers, and traffic "indiscipline" (also known as the number of accidents due to phone use, speeding, aggressive acceleration, and others). Poor safety rating aside, Texas still came out on top.

"Taking a summer road trip can be a very exciting way to experience a new place, but with the prices of gas, food and accommodations heavily impacted by inflation , you’ll want to be in a state that makes this type of vacation affordable," said Happe. "Safe roads are also key, and so is having plenty of worthwhile attractions to stop at along the road."

The top 10 states for summer road trips in 2024 are:

  • No. 1 – Texas
  • No. 2 – Minnesota
  • No. 3 – New York
  • No. 4 – Louisiana
  • No. 5 – Florida
  • No. 6 – Ohio
  • No. 7 – North Carolina
  • No. 8 – Wyoming
  • No. 9 – Maine
  • No. 10 – Pennsylvania
