Share All sharing options for: Official visitors list for Michigan football: June 2 weekend

Michigan v Ohio State

The Michigan Wolverines kick off the June official visit season with the recruiting version of a layup. All of the following visitors descending on Ann Arbor are either commits, strong Michigan leans or whose recruitment is wide open. Momentum should be relatively easy to build this weekend, and these visits will hopefully allow the staff to find their groove in time for the rest of the official visit weekends.

Here are this weekend’s expected visitors.

Cheshire Academy (CT) four-star EDGE Jacob Smith - No. 210 overall, No. 18 EDGE; four-star DL Jerod Smith - No. 229 overall, No. 29 DL

Twin brothers Jacob and Jerod Smith are two of the more intriguing visitors touring Ann Arbor. Both stellar defenders, the Smith brothers have dominated the competition together at the high school level, and it’s a strong possibility they will be teaming up at the next level.

Luckily for the Wolverines, Jerod is already a member of Michigan’s 2024 class. Jacob, who is currently uncommitted, will be taking his official this weekend, but in an interesting, propitious twist, Jerod will be taking his official later this month, a visit in which Jacob is also set to visit. This gives Michigan two chances to convince Jacob to join his brother in Maize and Blue in June.

The Wolverines have advantage after advantage, and it would be surprising — if not shocking — if Jacob doesn’t become a Wolverine.

Austintown Fitch (OH) four-star EDGE Brian Robinson - No. 132 overall, No. 10 Edge

Seen as the most impactful visit this weekend, Robinson’s trip to Ann Arbor comes at just the right time. After months of hype and speculation of an imminent commitment, Robinson has made it clear his recruitment will be longer than previously hoped for.

Penn State and Kentucky, who will also receive visits from the Ohio defensive standout, are nipping at Michigan’s heels. The Wolverines hope to show Robinson, who has visited Michigan several times, that they still view him as a key component of the class and distance themselves from the aforementioned competition. He is a talent too special to let slip away without a fight.

Providence Day (NC) four-star WR Jordan Shipp - No. 413 overall, No. 59 WR

The last remaining uncommitted prospect of the highly-touted Providence Day passing game trio, Shipp is perhaps the Maize and Blue’s best chance to snag a composite four-star wideout in the 2024 class. Jadyn Davis and Channing Goodwin’s presence in the class will certainly help in this one, but Shipp’s decision to take things at a slower pace denotes a desire to explore other options more thoroughly.

NC State is the biggest competition for the Wolverines, but one can hope this official visit will be what puts them over the top.

Chaminade (CA) four-star S Marquis Gallegos - No. 252 overall, No. 23 S

Flying a bit under the radar, the SoCal safety Gallegos has quickly gained the attention of many in Maize and Blue nation after he announced he will be taking an official visit. West Coast mainstays Oregon and USC have the leg up right now, but his exuberance regarding his Michigan offer and the effort he’s undertaking to make the trip out east is a very positive indication.

Jay Harbaugh and company will need to pick up defensive back commits like Gallegos if they hope to keep Michigan inside the top five of the 2024 class rankings, and this weekend presents a phenomenal opportunity to get things rolling in the right direction there.

Trieu: Here are the football recruits making official visits to Michigan this week

Michigan is scheduled to have a mid-week official visitor on campus Tuesday through Thursday in Chattanooga (Tennessee) Baylor School running back Shekai Mills-Knight.

The Wolverines offered the 6-foot-1, 217-pound Mills-Knight in early May, and he has been working to get to campus since then. Since it is a newer offer, the belief is that Michigan will have to make up ground on programs like Miami (Florida), Alabama and Tennessee. He took an official visit with the Hurricanes last week and admitted following the trip that Miami will be tough to beat. While he is technically an in-state recruit for Tennessee, Mills-Knight was raised in Montreal, Quebec, and has only been in the states for one season, so he is open to playing his college ball in any part of the country.

Two other running backs are due for their official visits this weekend in Gaithersburg (Maryland) Quince Orchard’s Iverson Howard and Santa Ana (California) Mater Dei’s Jordon Davison.

Davison is a 6-foot, 225-pound four-star and one of the top backs on the West Coast. He took an unofficial visit to Michigan in late March. He also had been to a game at Michigan Stadium as a freshman. He has a relationship with running backs coach Tony Alford going back to Alford's days at Ohio State.

He has been on an official visit to Alabama already and will get to Oregon and Ohio State before the end of the month. Ohio State still leads on his 247Sports Crystal Ball, but a lot of the groundwork for that lead had been laid by Alford.

Howard (5-10, 195 pounds) is scheduled to take an official visit to Florida State as well before his June 18 commitment date. The Wolverines, Seminoles, and Maryland are believed to be the three leading, with FSU believed to be trending upward.

Michigan also will get Alpharetta (Georgia) defensive end Julius Holly up for an official. He has gone from a fairly under-the-radar recruit to heavily sought-after in a short period of time. Michigan and Georgia both offered in May. He has officials with the Bulldogs, Ole Miss and Texas A&M following his trip to Michigan.

"I've never been up to Michigan before, so I'm looking forward to seeing their facilities and meeting the rest of the coaching staff," Holly said. “I'm definitely interested, considering they have one of if not the best engineering programs in college football.”

With options in the south, closer to home, this first visit will be vital to the Wolverines’ chances to add the 6-foot-3, 230-pound pass rusher to the class. He had 57 tackles and eight sacks as a junior.

Kissimmee (Florida) Osceola linebacker Elijah Melendez is committed to Miami, but he has been steadfast in wanting to take this visit to Michigan. He just visited Auburn, and the Tigers, led by former Wolverine defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, are now a big threat to flipping him.

"Really right now it's Auburn, Miami and a little bit of Michigan,” he told 247Sports’ Christian Clemente after his Tiger visit.

The Wolverines will then host four official visitors the following weekend.

Their 2025 class sits at five members.

NFL goals can wait — Michigan’s Will Johnson focused on final chapter in Ann Arbor

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 01: Will Johnson #2 of the Michigan Wolverines celebrates with The Leishman Trophy after beating the Alabama Crimson Tide 27-20 in overtime to win the CFP Semifinal Rose Bowl Game at Rose Bowl Stadium on January 01, 2024 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)

DETROIT — Will Johnson grew up on fields just like this one, a patch of turf on Forest Avenue with the Sweetest Heart of Mary church towering above it.

Johnson, an All-America cornerback who’s already being projected as a top-five pick in next year’s NFL Draft, was back in Detroit last week with more than a dozen of his Michigan teammates to host a youth football camp. As campers gathered around Johnson at midfield for a parting message, everyone was still buzzing about the final play of the day, a camper’s one-handed catch that sent Johnson sprinting up the sideline and left quarterback Alex Orji with his mouth agape.

The huddle briefly resembled a mosh pit before the campers calmed down and took a knee, leaning in to hear Johnson’s voice.

“I’ve got one thing I want you to do tonight,” Johnson said. “Write down your goals. Write down the things that are important to you in your life.”

Johnson started doing that himself when he was in middle school, scrawling his goals in chalk on a desk in his room. One goal was to win a national championship, something Johnson accomplished with his teammates last season. Another was to be a 10-year starter in the NFL . In the space between those goals, Johnson has another year at Michigan and one big question looming in front of him.

What’s the next goal?

“Nothing’s really changed,” Johnson said. “(The NFL) is all just talk for now until I get there. Having the same mindset I had, the mindset of growing, getting better each and every day and being my best self — that’s all I’m really worried about right now.”

Five-star recruits are supposed to be program changers, and that’s what Johnson has been at Michigan. His decision to sign with the Wolverines in the Class of 2022 was both a huge recruiting story and a natural progression for the son of a former Michigan defensive back from Detroit. Johnson came on strong late in his freshman season and became a bona fide star as a sophomore during Michigan’s run to the national championship, pulling down crucial interceptions in the national title game against Washington and Michigan’s victory against Ohio State .

michigan football visit pics

Many of the most recognizable faces from Michigan’s championship team are now in the NFL, including coach Jim Harbaugh, quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum . Johnson was among the returning players who helped keep the nucleus of the team together in the weeks after Harbaugh’s departure and Sherrone Moore’s promotion to head coach. The Wolverines aren’t heading into 2024 as the Big Ten favorite, but with Johnson leading a star-studded defense, Michigan’s three-year stranglehold on the conference won’t be easily broken.

“There’s a lot of guys that are 6-2, 200 pounds and can run and tackle and all that,” Michigan defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan said. “I think he does that with the best of them. The other stuff that he has that people don’t realize, that’s what separates him. That’s why he’ll be very successful at whatever the hell he chooses to do.”

Johnson has helped to bridge the distance between the college town of Ann Arbor and the city of Detroit, which is experiencing a football renaissance thanks to Michigan’s national championship and the rise of the Detroit Lions. Johnson is both the originator and the most frequent wearer of the Turnover Buffs, a pair of Cartier sunglasses that add Detroit flair to Michigan’s turnover celebrations. His father, Deon Johnson, co-founded the Sound Mind Sound Body youth football organization that sponsors camps and 7-on-7 events for Detroit-area players.

One of those events was the National College Showcase camp that drew hundreds of athletes and coaches to the campus of Wayne State last week. For the past two years, Johnson has had his own youth skills camp in conjunction with the larger camp for high school prospects, recruiting a large contingent of his Michigan teammates to join him. Not so long ago, Johnson was one of those kids himself, following his dad around to camps and tournaments.

“I’ve got pictures with him when he was so young,” Deon Johnson said. “He’d just be sitting on his knees in the middle of the field, just watching the guys. He’s been around it forever.”

The desk with the chalkboard is long gone, but the goals Johnson set as a kid have stayed with him. He wanted to be a high school All-American, which he was. He wanted to win a national championship, which he did. He wanted to play in the NFL, which he will. The Athletic ’s Dane Brugler had Johnson at No. 5 in his initial 2025 mock draft , and other early draft projections have him ranked in a similar spot.

With so much ahead and behind him, it would be easy for this year to feel like an intermission, a set of ellipses between two of the highest points of Johnson’s football career. That’s not how he’s approaching it. There’s more for him to accomplish, ways he can get better, skills he hasn’t shown.

Johnson hinted to reporters that he might take a few snaps on offense, which would bring about an obvious parallel with Charles Woodson, Michigan’s most recent Heisman Trophy winner and the only Heisman winner who played primarily on defense. It would take something remarkable for a defensive player to win the Heisman, but if ever there were a year for it, it might be 2024, a season with a larger-than-usual group of defensive stars and a noticeable lack of household names at the offensive skill positions.

Though it makes for enjoyable offseason speculation, draft projections and Heisman talk aren’t occupying much of Johnson’s attention. He’s trying to focus on what’s right in front of him, which for two hours last week was a group of fourth-through-seventh graders who want to be the next Will Johnson.

If that’s the goal, he’d tell them, write it down.

“It’s something I still do to this day,” Johnson said. “It’s something that’s very important, putting that energy out in the world, putting that energy in the atmosphere.”

The best photos from michigan's rose bowl comeback, share this article.

The Michigan Wolverines won their first College Football Playoff game on Monday with a miraculous comeback against Alabama , scoring the game’s last two touchdowns for a 27-20 victory in overtime.

The Wolverines defense dominated the first half, sacking Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe on five of his 15 dropbacks and holding the Crimson Tide under 100 total yards of offense in the first two quarters.

A slow day on offense and some special teams blunders meant Michigan only led by three at halftime, however, and Alabama’s offense started to churn in the last two quarters. The Crimson Tide scored a touchdown to retake the lead and kicked a long field goal to extend the lead to 20-13, forcing Michigan’s hand in the final five minutes.

The Wolverines offense responded, however. Blake Corum and Roman Wilson led the Michigan offense down the field, exchanging big plays before Wilson caught the game-tying touchdown on a flat route.

Corum took his turn with a touchdown rumble in overtime, and the Michigan defensive line stuffed Alabama on fourth down a few minutes later to punch their ticket to the national title.

Here are the best photos from Michigan’s victory.
