Queen Victoria Itineraries

Queen victoria review, review of queen victoria.

The 2007-built MS Queen Victoria cruise ship is of the same design as MS Queen Elizabeth (2010) and has as fleetmates the Cunard liners RMS Queen Mary 2 (2004) and the fleet's newest boat (2024-built) Queen Anne .

The vessel (IMO number 9320556) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310624000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Cunard Line is a British-American cruise brand, operated by Carnival UK and owned by Carnival Corporation (shipowner). Cunard is headquartered in Southampton (England UK) and is among the world's oldest passenger shipping companies . In 2015, Cunard Line celebrated its 175th anniversary.

MS Queen Victoria cruise ship (Cunard)

The 2074-passenger ship Queen Victoria joined Cunard's fleet in December 2007. The vessel is of the same design as Vista-class Carnival ships but is slightly longer. It is the smallest Cunard ship. Vessel's construction started on May 12, 2006, and was launched on January 15, 2007 (float-out).

Onboard facilities include 7 restaurants and 13 bars, ballroom, show theatre, 3 swimming pools. The bow has heavier steel plating to be able to do Transatlantic crossings. Queen Elizabeth has almost the same design as the fleet-mate Queen Victoria (Vista-class modified) - though QM2 cost about USD 300,000 per berth. What distinguishes both Cunard liners is the more angled stern, compared to the vertical QE. Victoria also lacks covered games deck (present on Elizabeth).

During ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment (May 5 - June 4, done by Fincantieri in Palermo Sicily Italy ), ship's passenger capacity was increased (from 2410 to 2489) by adding a whole new aft deck section to the vessel. Read more in the "wiki" section below.

Decks and Cabins

Cunard Queen Victoria staterooms (1037 total) include 126 Suites, 591 Balcony, 147 Oceanview and 138 Inside cabins, in all 9 types and 34 categories. The ship has 20 wheelchair-accessible and 9 studios (single-occupancy cabins). The largest are the Grand Suites (2130 ft2 / 198 m2 plus 970 ft2 / 90 m2 terrace).

Cabin types include Queens Grill, Princess Grill, Britannia, Suites (Grand, Master, Penthouse, Queens, Princess), Standard Balcony staterooms, Outside and Interior (no-windows). Most cabins (Britannia Balcony) are sized 190-420 ft2 / 18-39 m2, with cabin balconies sized 70 ft2 / 7 m2.

The boat has 12 decks (all passenger-accessible) of which 7 are with cabins. Of all staterooms, 86% are outside, with 71% of them with step-out balconies.

The public rooms are located on lower-level decks- Decks 2 and 3. Unlike Queen Mary 2, no central circulation access can be seen on Queen Victoria- the main corridors are on the port side. The ship has a similar staircase to the grand lobby as on Queen Mary. Deck 1 (the lowest passenger deck), holds the lowest levels of the 3-storrey Lobby and Royal Court Theatre. The mid-level of Royal Court Theatre, Golden Lion Pub, casino (fairly large, no smoking), Queen’s Room, Chart Room bar (adjacent to Britannia Restaurant, excellent for a quiet drink before dinner), Todd English restaurant and lower levels of the Britannia Restaurant and the library, are on Deck 2. On Deck 3 are the top levels of the Royal Court Theatre, Midships Lounge, Royal Arcade and the upper level of the library. Decks above contain passenger cabins. The Health Club and spa, Lido Restaurant, Winter Garden lounge and two outdoor pools are on Deck 9. The Commodore Club (a large observation lounge, with ocean views and late-night room for interactive entertainment), Hemispheres nightclub and Churchill Lounge (which is for smokers) are on Deck 10. The Princess and Queen’s Grill with their lounge and open courtyard, are on Deck 11.

Theoretically, MS Queen Victoria is a classless ship, but passengers are actually separated (like on all Cunard liners) as their onboard dining locations are according to their cabin's category/cruise fares paid. Britannia Restaurant is for regular cabins, Princess Grill - for junior suites, and the Queen’s Grill is for deluxe suites. All the other public rooms are free to be used by all passengers. The so-called Grill Passengers (dining in Queen’s and Princess Grill) have two private areas on Decks 10 and 11- Grills Terraces.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Three main dining venues are available on QV. Passengers who occupy the most expensive cabins (grades Q1 to Q7) are allowed to dine at Queens Grill. The other luxurious accommodations (grades P1 to P4) are assigned to Princess Grill. For those who booked from inside staterooms to cabins with balconies, the dining space is Britannia Grill. It is a traditional ship restaurant which along with the Grills is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner. Britannia is set-seating for dinner (from 6,00p.m. to 8,30p.m.) and open-seating for lunch and breakfast. It is Cunard’s tradition, passengers who dine at the Grills have assigned tables for dinner, lunch, breakfast and can also dine during restaurants’ opening hours at any time.

MS Queen Victoria cruise ship (Cunard)

Britannia Restaurant, located in the stern of Queen Victoria, has windows on the lower level which offer a nice sea view, on the upper level you will see the promenade deck. A good choice of options is available for each meal (for dinner in particular). The spa menu has a lighter option for each meal. The alternative restaurant as on Queen Mary 2, is Todd English. Lunch involves a cover charge of $20 per person and is served from midday until 2,00p.m. The dinner service fee is $30, available from 6,00p.m. until 9,30p.m. Book a table in advance- it is worth every cent. Food is great, service- attentive. The Lido is ship’s buffet area (but the least successful dining venue). With its perfect panoramic views, it offers 450 indoor and outdoor seating and standard self-serve buffet. Dinner is served there for passengers who need a casual alternative to the main dining (from 6,00p.m. to 11,00p.m. with waiter service). Available snack service through wee hours. In-cabin food service on QV is available 24 hours a day at no extra charge. The menu depends on whether you travel in Britannia (with limited number choices) or Grill accommodations. Continental breakfast could also be served to your cabin with a good choice of options. The pride of Cunard Line is the Afternoon Tea - a ceremony, performed from 3 pm until 4:30 pm every day in Grills Lounge and Queens Room. Waiters with white gloves serve tea from a big table in the center of the room, then serve scones with jam and sandwiches.

A variety of delicious dishes from fine ingredients is the reason why Cunard cuisine is respected. In the Queens Grill, you may enjoy intimate dining and choose between 142-seats if you are among the passengers in suites and top accommodation grades, or Princess Grill with 132 seats if you are in middle-class accommodation grades. Traditional pub food is served in the Golden Lion Pub. Another alternative dining spot is the Todd English Restaurant, with its classic English dining salon and Mediterranean cuisine served.

When you book you may request a sitting. The Britannia restaurant has two for dinner - at 6 p.m. and at 8.30 p.m. Princess Grill and Queens Grill do not have sittings - when they are open, you can dine any time you choose. A note for confirmation sitting and table number will be left in your stateroom when you board. Lunch and breakfast do not require allocated tables or sittings.

During the day, passengers definitely tend towards country club casual dress code. At night, even when it isn't a formal-designated evening, people dress anyway. There are three dress codes in the main restaurants after 6 p.m. each evening - which one applies each night you will be told in pre-voyage documentation and daily program in your stateroom: Formal (men - dinner jacket with a black tie or dark business suit; women- evening dress); Semi-formal (men- jacket and a tie; women - cocktail dress/trouser suit); Elegant casual (men - a jacket, tie is optional; women - skirt, dress or trousers). Shorts and T-shirts or shorts are not permitted!

Follows the complete list of Queen Victoria restaurants and food bars.

  • Todd English Restaurant (Lunch and Dinner only specialty restaurant at surcharge PP, reservations-only)
  • Verandah Restaurant (French specialty restaurant at a surcharge)
  • Britannia Restaurant (1351-seat, 2-level Dining Room; serves open-seating Breakfast and Lunch. Dinners are waiter-served, with 2 assigned sittings at 6 or 8:30 p.m.)

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Queen Victoria is a true Cunarder, flauntingly upholding their famous inheritance and traditions. With gorgeous marbles, woods, plush carpets, rich fabrics, and soft furniture, this cruise liner merely exudes elegance. The vessel's many diversions and distractions assure you are as thoroughly entertained and completely relaxed as you could wish to be, with all the majestic, stupendous magnificence people could imagine from a luxurious Cunard ocean liner, combined with an airy, modern atmosphere. As cruisers embark, they find the dramatic 3-tier Grand Lobby, with its superb staircase and eye-catching artwork that offer an exclusive taste of life.

MS Queen Victoria cruise ship (Cunard)

The principal venues for onboard entertainment are the Queens Room and the Royal Court Theatre. The Royal Court Theatre, which is three-deck-high, is in traditional style with red velvet and has the design of a classic opera house. It is the venue for lectures, concerts and large-screen movies, too. The featured twenty private boxes can be booked for shows at $50 per couple. This includes champagne and finger sandwiches and bubbly in the box. Maybe the most beautiful public room on board QV is the Queens Room on Deck 2- the setting for cocktails, balls, concerts, dance classes, and afternoon tea. Cafe Carinthia, the Veuve Cliquot Champagne Bar and the Chart Room Bar, all on the starboard side of Deck 2, attract passengers with warm, brown and yellow colors. Just aft of the theatre is located a bar. Commodore Club observation lounge is situated on Deck 10 with huge wall-to-ceiling windows. Next door is the small Churchill’s Cigar Lounge for smoke and drink with friends. The Hemispheres night club on Deck 10 is best for those who want to go on the ballroom dancing when finished in Queens Room. Passengers may attend Cunard Book Club literary discussions which are led by the librarian. On selected voyages on board come members of Royal Astronomical Society to teach about space and lead star-gazing nights. QV offers computer learning programs in the Apple Learning Centre. Courses in Apple iStudy on iMac computers teach basic computer skills, movie making, photo editing, new technology as Facebook and iPads.

Live jazz is played in some of the lounges and bars. There are also bands and solo entertainers onboard. In the Queens Room, Big Band nights are held. A glass-roof Winter Garden lounge and two-story library with spiral staircase add to ship's beauty. The Library is two-deck-high with 6,000-book facility and two librarians. You could also buy maritime-related books from a separate bookshop, as well as maps and stationery. The Pavilion Pool is a high-volume disco and nightclub.

The Royal Spa and Fitness Centre of Cunard offers stunning ocean views, relaxation places, wonderfully appointed healing rooms and relaxing therapies, as well as a scenic glass-encased Fitness Centre. The Royal Health Club and Spa includes a beauty salon, a gymnasium with ocean view and aerobics area, Thermal Area- steam rooms and sauna, body treatment rooms, relaxation area, rasul chamber for Hammam-style steam and mud bathing.

Queen Victoria is not a ship that specially caters to families with children. But if you decide to take your children, they must be at least two years old for the itineraries of 2012, to be able to participate in nursery programs without your supervision. On Deck 10 you can find children’s playroom with lots of toys, and The Zone, which is specially designed for teenagers with computer games. Both rooms feature enough outdoor deck space.

Cunard cruise ship weddings, ceremonies, and onboard parties could be held in some of the QV's lounges. There is no onboard chapel on the QV ship.

Follows the complete list of Queen Victoria lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults.

Queen Victoria Wiki

Queen Victoria is Cunard Line's 2nd new liner by year built, with its "Cunard Queens" sisterships Queen Elizabeth and RMS Queen Mary 2 . By the Spirit-Class design, the Cunard Victoria ship is similar to the liners Arcadia (P&O UK), Princess' Coral and Island , and Costa's Luminosa and Deliziosa . Carnival Corporation ordered this vessel for Holland America Line , but before the construction was completed it was re-assigned to Cunard Line.

This Cunard liner was named after Queen Victoria (1819-1901, the Empress of India). The ship's godmother is Camilla Parker (Duchess of Cornwall). Fun fact about the naming ceremony is that the champagne bottle thrown at the hull didn't break, which is generally considered a very bad omen. However, another bottle was thrown just seconds later and the second time everything was successful. Fortunately, no serious accidents have been reported on the cruise ship, so far. The maiden voyage was along Northern Europe (10-day itinerary December 11-21).

Unlike traditional Cunard liners, Queen Victoria is not an ocean liner (based on propulsion system and hull design). The vessel has a reinforced bow and higher freeboard to handle North Atlantic Ocean's weather extremes. The ship has the very first true theatre at sea (with private boxes) and the largest ballroom (Queen Victoria At Sea).

On December 15, 2010, Cunard's first female captain - Inger Olsen (born on Faroe islands) - took command of the cruise ship. In October 2011, the vessel changed its registry/flagstate  from the UK to Bermuda, which allows cruise wedding ceremonies to be held on the ship. The word "Southampton" on the stern was replaced with "Hamilton".

Operated each year and starting in January, Queen Victoria World Cruise deals are among the industry's most anticipated. Compared to other companies, Cunard's world voyages offer affordable prices and visit popular destinations and big seaport cities around the world.

Prices started from GBP 14000 / ~USD 18200 / ~EUR 15400 per person (Britannia Inside stateroom at double occupancy).

MS Queen Victoria refurbishments review

Queen Victoria's drydocking in 2022 (May 2-19) was at Harland & Wolff shipyard (in Belfast, Northern Ireland ). In 2023, the vessel was drydocked (at Navantia Cadiz) for general maintenance.

During drydock refurbishment 2017 (May 5 through June 4, done by Fincantieri in Palermo Sicily Italy ) were installed additional 43x Britannia Club staterooms, as well as single-occupancy cabins. According to Cunard Line, the decision was based on passenger demand.

  • A total of 18 balcony cabins plus 15 inside cabins were added on decks 6, 7, 8, 9. The new interior staterooms were added in the aft deck sections of decks 5, 6, 7, 8.
  • 5 new Penthouse Suites were also added.
  • The total number of staterooms was increased from 1004 to 1037,
  • These deck plan changes also reflected on the ship's max passenger capacity, which was increased from 2410 to 2489.
  • Refits and enhancements were also done to several of the ship's most popular public spaces (including Lido Sun Deck, Winter Garden, Britannia Club Restaurant). All staterooms were upgraded with large flat TVs plus tea-coffee making facilities.

The 2017 refurbishment cost Cunard ~GBP 30 million (USD 40M). The increased passenger capacity was accomplished by adding to the ship a whole new aft deck section.

The boat's drydock in 2015 (December 2014 - January 2015) resulted in no major deckplan changes, excepting the new single cabins added on deck 2. The drydocking was at Bohm+Voss Shipyard ( Hamburg Germany ) and included mainly maintenance works on the hull and propulsion (Azipods bearings changing). Drydock works were done by almost 2000 people working on the ship (~600,000 man-hours). The refit (as upgrades and renovations) featured:

  • a total of 9 single cabins (8 Oceanview, 1 Interior) were added on deck 2 (portside) taking some space from the casino.
  • over 20,000 m2 of new carpeting (in all public spaces) along with updating the wall paneling
  • 3100 new mattresses (in all cruise cabins and suites) along with new sheets and towels
  • tea/coffee pantries were installed at the Britannia dining room
  • floor renovation in the ballroom Queen's Room
  • More awnings were added on Lido Deck 9 (around the pools), increasing the shaded seating/relaxation areas.

Cunard World Cruise 2022 (Queen Victoria)

Cunard's World Voyage 2022 on Queen Victoria was a 108-day roundtrip from UK (Southampton) also bookable as a 97-day itinerary (Fort Lauderdale to Southampton) and features a Panama Canal transition . The world cruise 2022 (January 10 through April 29) visits 30 ports, 19 UNESCO Sites and offers overnights in the port cities Sydney NSW, San Francisco, Cape Town South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong. Visited destinations include Bermuda, USA (Fort Lauderdale, San Francisco, Honolulu), Caribbean (Aruba, Panama), Costa Rica, Mexico, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia (Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns), Papua New Guinea, Philippines, China (Hong Kong), Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, South Africa, Namibia, Spain-Canaries (Tenerife).

Queen Victoria Overview

Named after one of England’s most beloved monarchs, Queen Victoria is an ocean liner with charm and grace. Onboard, the liner is designed with regal touches of gold and has a beautiful sense of serenity. The Royal Court Theatre is like a set out of an old movie. This is the only theater at sea with private balcony boxes where you can watch a marvelous live performance or catch a classic movie. The liner’s spa is an inviting space where you’ll enjoy a number of treatments along with the warmth of the Royal Bath House thermal suite, which uses heat to help your muscles unwind. Queen Victoria also has a wide selection of enrichment classes, menus with inspiring meals and spacious staterooms.

Overall Review: Cunard’s Queen Victoria Transatlantic Voyage (~Excellent and Looking Forward to Next Time!)

We sailed for nine nights on the first leg of Queen Victoria’s world cruise comprising 98 nights in total. With a capacity of about 2,000 passengers 1,200 are booked for the full 98 nights. Wow! We paid for our cabin and airfare to London. Cunard upgraded us from Britannia class to Princess Grill accommodations. They provided free internet, a dinner in the specialty restaurant and spa passes. How did they score?

Overall Score: 95/100

Although we were upgraded to Princess Grill, which has its own dedicated dining room and access to benefits like the Grills Lounge, we frequently dined in the Britannia Restaurant, the Lido buffet restaurant and visited the bars and lounges frequented by the majority of the ship’s passengers. Our evaluation is of the entire ship experience.

Evaluating the Cruise

Scoring is done across ten categories with a maximum of ten points per category. Simple enough.

queen victoria world cruise 2023

  • Boarding and disembarking. Boarding took about an hour. Boarding involved standing on four lines: Covid documentation, registration, security and boarding the ship. The ticket we printed off before arrival was stamped, stickered and checked at least a dozen times. Immigration upon entering NYC took time, because everyone must leave the ship before anyone is allowed back onboard. When we disembarked, claiming luggage and going through Customs took mere minutes. 8/10.
  • Health. This was done well. Every passenger needed to show proof of vaccination plus boosters along with proof of a negative Covid test before boarding. Once onboard, life returned to pre pandemic behavior as much as possible, but passengers seemed responsible and careful. 10/10.
  • Ship design. It’s easy to say “It’s not the Queen Mary 2” There is only one Once the ocean gets rough, you do feel it. The captain did a good job steering towards smoother waters. There is some vibration at the rear of the ship. The ship did not feel crowded at any time, even with 2,000 passengers and 1,000 crew. 9/10.
  • Stateroom. We had a Princess Grill category stateroom, which is about 50% larger than a Brittania category cabin. The extra space is in the length, meaning a larger bathroom, walk-in closet and a longer sofa. The Britannia category staterooms are well designed. We have sailed about 17 times previously. All those cruises have been in Britannia staterooms. 10/10.
  • Shopping. I have yet to experience spectacular shopping onboard a cruise ship. To their credit, Cunard showcases iconic British brands like Barbour, Floris and Mulberry. They have reasonably priced articles in the shops. Some of the duty free liquor is a spectacular buy. 8/10.
  • Food. We have found the food consistently good over the years. You can expect the showstopper dishes like Beef Wellington, lobster and souffles regardless of your dining room. For premium dining, the Verandah restaurant does a good job, with a $45 per person supplement at dinner. 10/10.
  • Drink. I am impressed by the wine list. A lot of thought has gone into it. You can find plenty of bottles of wine below $50 or even below $40. Cocktails are reasonably priced. They have drinks packages and wine bottle assortments that make sense. 10/10.
  • Entertainment. The Insights lectures are one of Cunard’s crown jewels. They had excellent speakers. There are abundant activities where you can meet and socialize with fellow passengers. They had an excellent singer who performed Edith Piaf songs. The military band sending us off and the fireworks leaving the harbor were spectacular. 10/10.
  • Ports. The sole ports on our voyage were Southampton (departure) and New York City (arrival). We docked in midtown Manhattan, which is a great advantage because you are within walking distance of all the action in New York. Thinking ahead to other ports on the world cruise, they have many good ones on the itinerary. 10/10.
  • Staff attitude. I would like to say our cabin steward could have been more attentive. He did the job, but there wasn’t as much interaction as I would expect as part of the Princess Grill experience. Everyone else was great. The assistant manager in the Princess Grill dining room was very attentive. The Grills concierge got everything done that I requested. The staff at the Purser’s Office treated every passenger with respect. People smiled. Service was prompt. Considering the big picture, I give it the top score. 10/10.

High Points:

  • The wine themed events. As a wine fan, I appreciate the wine and food pairing lunch. I asked about it and signed up the day we boarded! The scotch tasting was excellent.
  • The Insights lectures. We had a former British diplomat who served in Moscow lecturing on the KGB. We had a famous authoress and BBC Radio 4 presenter talking about her book and telling funny stories. There are always at least one or two great speakers.
  • The social activities. There was a Masons meeting and a Rotary Club meeting. There was a Women’s Institute and Christian Fellowship meeting. There was a solo travelers gathering twice a day. There are many opportunities to make friends.
  • The trivia sessions. This is a big deal in England. The Golden Lion Pub has four trivia sessions every day! It is difficult to find a seat, even though the room is very large. These are very popular. It’s easy to make friends because everyone knows something and no one knows everything.
  • The Queen Victoria choir. I am amazed about 60 people could board a ship as strangers and seven days later be performing spectacularly as a group, singing together. It is very moving.
  • Afternoon tea in the Queens Room. This is so elegant. It always draws a crowd. You meet new people because you are often seated with or near another couple. They serve scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Areas for Improvement:

  • The boarding process. A large amount of the registration process is now done from your home. You enter your credit card details. You upload photos for your shipboard keycards. It should really not take an hour. The ticket we printed at home that was stamped “OK to board” and stickered was checked about a dozen times before we boarded.
  • Internet access. Yes, there are no cell towers in the middle of the ocean. Internet access is not good. I do not know if there is a solution for this problem. If you are paying for internet access, you expect connectivity.
  • Vibration. The stern of the ship has a vibration problem. The propeller was replaced in drydock a couple of weeks earlier, but the problem has not gone away. It is very noticeable at the back of the Britannia dining room.
  • Bring back the pre formal night parties. Yes, it’s logical Covid protocols discourage bringing large groups of people together. Most Cunard voyages would feature a Captain’s Welcome Cocktail party, open to everyone. On another evening there would be the World Club party, for people who have sailed multiple times. There was also the Senior Officer’s Party for higher tier World Club members. At these events you learned about the latest Cunard news, who the top sailors were and the many nationalities represented among the passengers.
  • Bring back the third formal night. Transatlantic crossings typically featured three formal nights. These were often aligned to the cocktail parties and the gala evening themes like the Ascot Ball and the Venetian Masked Ball. These represent some of the magic of Cunard.

As you can tell, we had an overall excellent experience and are looking forward to our next voyage.

Review of Queen Victoria World Cruise 2023

By H. Bucket 01 April 2023

We had decided to do a portion of  Cunard’s  World Centennial Voyage which was a celebration of the first World Cruise by the Laconia in 1923.

We were disappointed on arriving at the cruise terminal to find that although it was meant to be a recreation of that  particular world cruise the ship was in fact a new modern cruise ship -  the  “Queen Victoria” and instead of us being in a time period comparable to the 1920s we would in fact be surrounded by all the modern conveniences of a current Cruiseship and not in fact a recreation of the original Liner the Laconia.

I had only packed costumes for the 1920s.

We had heard that Cunard was a very class conscious shipping line and with each class strictly  divided but we were disturbed that  when we had arrived at the embarkation lounge to board the ship  we were seated in amongst passengers who were traveling in Britannia Class and that we were not given our own lounge or seating arrangements.  We also were disturbed that contrary to the photos on the advertising brochures,  we had to carry our own hand luggage onboard to our suite and were not personally escorted by one of the crew - carrying our bags.

We should have been alerted to these “slipping”  standards when on booking our trip - last minute on a cut price internet site, that we were refused our first choice suite as “ apparently” it was in a higher category than we had booked and Cunard wanted us to pay extra to have the stateroom of our choice just because it was a Queens Suite, rather than Princess which we had booked and paid for.  Our second choice  Princess Suite 5002, was also not available because there was someone already in that cabin and the agent refused to move that person so that we could have our cabin of choice. Not acceptable.

On arriving at our rooms after stopping by the Pursers office to enquire as why our  requested free upgrade had not been granted we found that our luggage was already waiting for us. This was the first sign that things may be on the up  so we left to have lunch expecting our butler to unpack for us. You can imagine our surprise when returning to our stateroom after lunch to find that our luggage was still where we had left it and still packed. Apparently the butlers are only provided for Queens Suites! A definite sign of a class distinction on the ship! We were therefore forced into unpacking ourselves…. certainly not what you would expect on a “luxury” line.

The next day after leaving port the previous night  we were subjected to the whole day with nothing to look at whatsoever except the sea! You would think that the Captain would have found something interesting for us to sail past to break the tedium. Another shortcoming and bad planning by Cunard.

With the extortionate cost of drycleaning on board, I had decided to do some laundry and you can imagine my shock on hearing of the following  3 incidents from other passengers while  I was waiting for the washing to be completed.

Four people had just been removed from the ship for fighting in the laundry room. Two women were having an argument and had called their respective husbands -  one of whom hit the other husband with an iron and the group was disembarked at the next port.

In another incident a lady had a cocktail dress in the washing machine and when she returned it had been stolen. That night at a cocktail party she saw a woman wearing her dress and when she approached and challenged the lady  she was told to “prove it” and Security was not interested in her complaint.

In a third incident two ladies had an argument in the laundry room and when one returned she found that a chocolate bar had been placed in her dryer ruining all of her clothes.

I think that this shows that there is a culture of aggression and entitlement on board and that the  police should travel onboard permanently just  to ensure the safety of its passengers.

There was also a reported 55 people dying on board during the World Cruise. Surely they should have a coroner on board permanently to investigate these deaths and mitigate this unexplained pandemic.

We were distraught when we decided one night to try out the Queens Grill Dining room and were turned away at the door by the Maitre “d” who told us that we were unable to dine there as we were in the Princess Grill Dining room - across the foyer.  Another sign of Cunard's discriminatory policies.

This was further exacerbated by one evening when  a group of Britannia class passengers were stopped at the door to our Princess Grills Dining room.   Fortunately they were turned away as they were obviously - by the way that they were dressed in Polo shirts and Jeans were not traveling Princess Grills.   Why they thought that they could dine with us I do not know when they had only paid for a lower class. Such entitlement.

This was an  entirely unnecessary incident as  they had been  able to freely transit unchallenged up the exclusive stairs to our Grills deck.  Surely there must be some sort of security system to keep these people out of the area. It was bad enough that we had to travel up to deck 11 in the same lift as some of these people  but where will the loosening up of standards end? We kept swiping our cards in the key slot in the lift  to make the point that any other passengers  in the lift without the same card should feel a sense of shame.  Sadly they did not seem to take any notice.

The Brittania classes have plenty of dining rooms available to them,  the MDR, the Steak House, the Lido and the Golden Lion. We only have the Princess Grills Dining room. The constant reiteration of the class separations was exhausting.

On a further note, and as an example of Cunard's strange culture was that they had a “World Cruise Party” one night for those traveling on the World Cruise and we were denied entry as we were only on the ship for 22 days. Despite our arguing that we were also on “the World Cruise” and the length of time we were onboard should not matter. It was further exacerbated by  later in the voyage they had a Diamond and Platinum party and  we were also denied entry because this is our first cruise and supposedly this was for people who had been on the line for 75 days or longer.

Once again Discriminatory!

The longer World Cruise passengers even had an area in one of the lounges roped off for their sole use, this is meant to be an egalitarian world and this sort of discrimination should not be allowed!

As a perfect example of the “cliquiness” of Cunard. There was a group on board called “the Anchor Group”. This group of passengers,  numbering what seemed to be several hundred were constantly all over the ship in the middle of all of the activities, public rooms and bars drinking and laughing and creating general merriment.. They seemed to be enjoying themselves far to much for it to be acceptable in polite company and so much an extent that they made those of us who were not part of their group stand out and want to join in with them.

Something I would not expect on our holiday. Cunard should either not allow these groups to form or alternatively organize the ship in such a way that people could create their own groups to be able to enjoy the facilities to the same extent rather than be left to fester on themselves. I find it very selfish of Cunard to not promote this sort of comradeship in such social media groups such as facebook. Very short sighted..

In Keeping up Appearances we invited the Captain one night to dine with us. It was unfortunate that the particular day in question was one where  the ship was traveling through a force 11 gale  - why the captain had chosen to do this I do not know, however just before dinner he had the cheek to send us “his regrets” as he was needed on the bridge. We found this insulting as we were paying guests and in fact paying his wages. I think that he should have had the courtesy to join us for dinner that night and the excuse of being “needed on the bridge” sounded like a “fob” and was offensive. There was no reason why he could not have joined us and left one of his subordinates in charge. On that note, whilst we were traversing so called “Pirate Alley” we were made to extinguish external lighting on our balconies and there was ugly Razor wire and Security Dishes established along the ships exterior making the ship appear ugly. This should not have been permitted as it spoilt all of our photos.

It was during this particular period that one day I noticed that whilst sitting on my balcony  - where I might mention there appeared to be some rust on the steel divider, that there was some black smog emanating from the ships funnel with the soot falling all around us and into my drink. I will be expecting a personal apology from the ship for this incident as it meant that I had to refill my glass and wait inside ten minutes until the incident past.

I can not understand why the ship would schedule a port stop on an Island on a Sunday when most shops are closed or the residents are at church. You would think that these islands would forgo their religion so that they could entertain us and open their shops for us. Instead we were forced to visit their towns and islands and entertain ourselves. Bad planning on the part of Cunard. And while on the subject We were further shocked and extremely disappointed when the Ship canceled our call into Tonga. The only reason that we had  booked this trip was to visit Tonga where my best friend's great aunt twice removed had once visited in the 1950s and I had always wanted to do the same. We shall be requesting a full refund from Cunard plus expenses and a free cruise for the inconvenience.

I have sent my complaints to Cunard's head office but so far have had no response.

Haha

Daisy too… But at least Onslow looked good in a tuxedo.

Lovely tongue-in-cheek review, roscoe39 - took me a few intakes of breath before I realised - though the ultra large font had me moving back away from the screen, as well as the content!

Was Onslow in Britannia class wearing his string vests on Gala nights?

Brilliant - sure there may be some red faces reading this. Keep it up!

No.  I had great respect for his ability to make a living from the character, but I never found him remotely funny.

thank you for your thoughts.

The entire Australasian population is in mourning for our fellow country woman and megastar. The loss of her bridesmaid from our very own dear country Madge a few years ago is still a trauma that we are only just now beginning to come out of and now sadly we are plunged back into a period of deep depression once again that is only equal to that felt by the passing of our late Queen who incidentally was also a great fan.

Never again to hear her greeting of "Hello Possum" or be hit in the head by a errant bunch of gladiolus thrown from the stage,  the World (and Moonie Ponds)  is sadly a little less bright, a little less cheerful and a damned sight less funny.

RIP Dame Edna - you will be sadly missed

(and incidentally, I did meet her character Barry H once -  a great friend of a dear friend of mine -  a terrific raconteur and wit around the dinner table and not only an entertainer on stage)

WEATHER ALERT

2 river flood warnings in effect for 8 counties in the area

Dozens of united airlines passengers headed to houston fall ill after international cruise, “thirty minutes before we land, we get told that they’ve been exposed to an unknown virus.”.

Gage Goulding , News Reporter , Houston, TX

Michael Lemons , Photojournalist

HOUSTON – More than two dozen people on a United Airlines flight to Houston on Friday became ill while the plane was traveling from Canada.

RELATED: United Airlines says it has regained some privileges that were suspended after problem flights

United Airlines flight 1528 was flying from Vancouver, British Columbia to Houston. During the flight, 25 people became sick.

According to the Houston Fire Department , the sick passengers reported symptoms of nausea.

“About an hour and a half before we hit Houston, they ask for if you’ve been on this cruise ship, could you raise your hand,” James Snell recounts from his flight.

All of the ill passengers were previously on a cruise. A total of 75 passengers flying on the plane were on that cruise.

Firefighters and paramedics met the passengers as they landed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport following the five-hour flight from Vancouver, British Columbia.

“Then all of a sudden, the flight attendant, she put on a mask, and the guy next to me is like, ‘What do you think’s going on?’ And I’m like, ‘Bro, I don’t know. You know? I mean, COVID, we’re all going to die.’ You know what I mean,” said Snell.

Three people were “evacuated” from the airplane, but no one was taken to the hospital.

MORE STORIES INVOLVING UNITED AIRLINES

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) the plane landed around 6:30 p.m.

“Then firetrucks and ambulances started pulling up,” Snell said. “They didn’t hold us very long, maybe 45 minutes-ish.”

Passengers aboard the airplane say that the pilot and flight attendants alerted them that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating the illness.

“This is where it got weird,” Snell said. “He [the pilot] got over the speaker, but he came out to us and he said, ‘Hey, in my 25 years of flying, I’ve never seen anything like this. We have been quarantined by the CDC. Nobody can exit the plane until the CDC lets us off.’”

After being let off the plane passengers were screened by paramedics from the Houston Fire Department.

“As soon as you got off, you got mobbed, wanting to know if you had any symptoms and did you want to be triaged,” Snell said. “But then they let us off and I thought, man, you’re letting us off in Houston airport. Like we’re going everywhere in the world. This is how it started the last time.”

The last time refers to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s what he and other passengers thought they could be dealing with.

“We’re all trapped in this tube, and we’ve all lived through Corona. And I was just like, ‘oh, come on. Not again,’” Snell said.

KPRC2 asked the FAA, CDC, Houston Fire Department and United Airlines for information about which cruise ship the passengers who got sick were on and for the illness, but none of the organizations would provide further information.

According to information from the CDC, there have been seven outbreaks of illness on cruise ships this year.

The most recent is a norovirus outbreak on the Celebrity Summit cruise ship.

Norovirus is commonly known as the “stomach bug” and can lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It’s a highly contagious virus, but is typically not a severe illness and passes in a few days, the CDC reports.

According to Celebrity Cruises’ website , the Celebrity Summit ship is currently sailing between Seward, Alaska and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Vancouver is where the United Airlines flight full of sick passengers took off.

KPRC 2 asked Celebrity Cruises for more information about their outbreak and if it’s connected to the sick passengers that landed in Houston. We’re still waiting for an answer.

Meanwhile, United Airlines tells KPRC 2′s Gage Goulding that the plane is being pulled from rotation until it can be deep cleaned.

UNITED AIRLINES STATEMENT

“Several passengers who had been on the same cruise and did not feel well were on United Flight 1528 from Vancouver to Houston tonight. United Airlines is actively coordinating with health authorities to address the situation. As a precautionary measure, the aircraft will be removed from service and go through a deep cleaning before returning to service. Ensuring the health and safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

CDC Statement

“CDC is aware of a flight from Vancouver, British Columbia, that arrived at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Friday, May 31.

Public health officers from CDC’s Houston Port Health Station worked with EMS to evaluate ill passengers on board. Most of the ill passengers reported mild GI symptoms. No passengers were noted to have a fever during the flight or upon public health assessment at landing. No passengers met CDC criteria for further public health follow-up. Passengers from the flight continued with their travel plans.”
