No need for speed — CDOT urges drivers to slow down this summer

News release.

Statewide — As motorists rush into summer and hit the road for their warm weather plans, the Colorado Department of Transportation wants to remind drivers to watch their speed. Colorado lost 751 lives to speeding between 2021 and 2023, according to CDOT’s 2023 Core Outcome Report. Speed was a leading factor in traffic deaths in Colorado last year, resulting in 258 fatalities, and outnumbering impaired driving (228) and unrestrained passenger (222) fatalities. While it can be tempting to hit the gas to bypass traffic, no one is invincible — speeding can result in a citation and puts you at a much greater risk of a crash.

Crashes peak during summer months as more Coloradans plan road trips and outdoor activities. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer, during which Colorado historically sees a spike in fatal crashes. Last July there were 90 traffic deaths, the most ever recorded in a single month in Colorado.

From 2020 to 2023, there were 418 speeding related fatalities during the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer. In 2021, 29% of all Colorado traffic fatalities were speeding related.

Graph displaying the number of fatal crashes caused by speeding between Memorial Day and Labor Day, 2020 to 2023

“Between May and September last year, there were a total of 351 fatal crashes in Colorado,” said CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety Director Darrell Lingk. “With the official start of summer around the corner, it’s important to remember that all drivers have the responsibility to obey the speed limit, drive sober and focus on the road.”

Drivers tend to overestimate the time saved by speeding. In fact, a motorist moving at 80 mph instead of 75 mph would have to travel 100 miles to save roughly 5 minutes . In addition, speeding and aggressive driving endanger not only the driver, but also other motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. If you encounter somebody speeding, CDOT shares the following tips to stay safe:

  • Maintain Space: Give other drivers, speeding or not, plenty of space. Drivers are more likely to lose control of their vehicles when speeding.
  • Do Not Engage: Speeding is often linked to aggressive driving. If a speeding driver is tailgating you or trying to engage in risky behavior, use your judgment to safely steer your vehicle out of the way.
  • Report Dangerous Behavior: If you believe a driver is following or harassing you, or engaging in other risky behavior, dial *CSP (*277) or your local law enforcement to report.

The counties that had the most traffic deaths involving speeding in 2023 were El Paso, Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Jefferson. Of these counties, El Paso County has remained in the top five for speeding citations since 2019.

The top five roadways for speeding citations by highest speeding intervals (20+ mph over the posted speed limit) issued by the Colorado State Patrol in 2023 were:

  • Highway 285

“The temptation to speed is real and law enforcement officers aren’t oblivious to that,” said Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “Almost everyone is guilty of speeding at one time or another, but that doesn’t make it OK. Speeding is aggressive driving. When crashes happen and speed is involved, your chance of a serious injury increases dramatically."

Paired with other dangerous driving behaviors, speeding increases the chance of a crash. In 2021, 43% of all speeding-related traffic fatalities in Colorado also involved alcohol impairment, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration . CDOT continues to support local law enforcement agencies for The Heat Is On DUI enforcement periods, during which drivers may see saturation patrols, sobriety checkpoints and additional law enforcement officers on duty dedicated to arresting impaired drivers.

Colorado State Patrol troopers continue to take a low-tolerance approach to the top fatal crash factors, including lane violations, impaired driving, and speeding, while launching a yearlong campaign called “ Drive Safe .” This campaign celebrates positive driving behaviors and encourages all of us to drive like a trooper is riding with you.

Lake City Cutoff eases some traffic woes on U.S. 50 but long waits are still the norm

Vehicles in line for the noon opening on the westbound side of the U.S. 50 bridge closure detour in Gunnison County.

It’s midday and there is a long line of vehicles on the Highway 149 side of the cutoff. Drivers like Steve Bonnell are queuing up for the noon opening of County Road 26.

He owns a nearby ranch and is driving a pickup truck that’s pulling an empty livestock trailer. He’s using the Lake City Cutoff to return to Mesa County to get another load of cattle.

“Well, we own a ranch here in Powderhorn and we own one on Kannah Creek down by Grand Junction,” Bonnell said. “And this is where we summer and that’s where we winter. So, we haul all our cows up every spring and back every fall. We haul about 20-30 head a day. It takes us about 10 days to get them all hauled.”

Driver Steve Bonnell is using the Lake City Cutoff to haul his cattle to their summer pasture in Gunnison County.

Back in April, when he first heard the news about the bridge closure, he was worried. Bonnell wasn’t sure how he would get his livestock to their summer pastures in Gunnison County. So his son called the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

“They said we are about the eightieth person that have ranches up here in the summer [to call],” he said. “And, after that bridge closed they said they won’t allow us to bring trailers or semis or anything on this road. And, they finally changed their minds. I guess they got enough pressure because we would’ve had to sold our cows.”

The bypass is a dirt road that isn't designed for heavy-duty vehicles or the volume of traffic normally seen on U.S. 50. However, it opened to some commercial vehicles and trailers in mid-May, much to the relief of area ranchers and business owners.

To restrict the amount of traffic on that road, the cutoff is not open all the time, leading to complicated journeys and long waits for many travelers.

Heather Malcom, a Gunnison resident, is using the Lake City Cutoff to drive her son to an appointment in Montrose.

Heather Malcolm and her son used the bypass on this day to travel from Gunnison to Montrose.

“He has a two o'clock appointment,” Malcolm said. “We’re leaving at 10:30 a.m. and we’ll be home by nine o’clock tonight. “It’s a big day for a 20-minute orthodontist appointment.”

She said she’s also frequently using the cutoff to get her son to out-of-town soccer games. Malcolm said her trips now take longer and require more planning.

“We were in Paonia last weekend for a game,” she said “We were in Rifle the weekend before [and will be] in Grand Junction this coming weekend for tournaments. It’s just an inconvenience.”

Malcolm is also a nurse at Gunnison Valley Hospital. She said despite the bridge closure, the hospital has a plan in place for when a patient needs to be transferred.

“I feel like our hospital has done a great job of organizing everything and making it as fluid as it can be,” she said. “It’s kind of a combination of flying people out, ground transportation with EMS. All of those things.”

The sheriff’s office in Gunnison is where the emergency operations center for the bridge closure is housed.

The operations center coordinates with local governments and emergency officials to ensure County Road 26 is accessible and in good repair.

Chuck Balke is the deputy incident commander for the state-led crisis response team.

Chuck Balke is the deputy incident commander for the state-led crisis response team to U.S. 50 bridge closure. <br>

“The ambulance service, the fire department have priority access to County Road 26,” he said. “If something happens, they can communicate with that pilot car and get everyone pulled over and allow that emergency vehicle to go by.”

He said when the dirt road is closed, maintenance is being done.

“The contractor is actually going back and continuing to make those road improvements where it needs to happen,” Balke said. “There are still areas [where] the road base is still soft. We still have to worry about the incoming weather washing parts of it away so they are constantly making repairs.”

The closed bridge on U.S. 50 between Montrose and Gunnison.

He said the U.S. 50 bridge closure is not a federal incident.

“It’s not a natural disaster where that would trigger federal funding,” he said “It’s local. When I say local, I mean a state situation. So, the state is responsible for taking care of how it’s done and how it’s funded.”

Balke understands using the detour is a hassle but he said local and state officials are doing everything they can to address the situation.

“The patience the community has shown to us in general has been greatly appreciated,” he said. “Obviously, we aren’t going to make everyone happy. We know people have bad days where they get a little frustrated but we ask you don’t take it out on the flaggers and the people that are out there really trying to improve the situation for everyone who’s impacted.”

The entrance to the westbound side of the U.S. 50 bridge closure detour in Gunnison County.

Back on the cutoff, lead traffic control worker Eric Trujillo said he’s there to help and answer questions.

“I’m the daytime supervisor on the Gunnison side,” Trujillo said. “Our flaggers and workers, it’s kind of a long day for them. We work 12-hour shifts day and night.”

Driver Steve Bonnell said he wants to see the road open all the time.

“When the cars get done coming this way, they’ll turn around and let the others go back that way,” he said. “I don’t mind it being a one-way because with this much traffic, it’s kind of narrow but if they get it open all the time you won’t have to sit here for a couple of hours a day.”

Transportation officials said they hope to have the bridge on U.S. 50 open to one-lane alternating traffic by the Fourth of July and have repairs completed sometime in the fall.

Until then, people can continue to expect delays and detours in the area.

2 injured but survive after plane crashes near I-25 in Larkspur

LARKSPUR, Colo. (KKTV) - Both the pilot and passenger survived after their plane crashed near the interstate Sunday morning.

First responders with Colorado State Patrol and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were called to the Larkspur area just before 8 a.m. on reports of a downed aircraft. The plane was found in a marshy area just east of the roadway. Initially, officials told 11 News the two on board had to be rescued from the aircraft, but the sheriff’s office later said both were able to get out.

Emergency personnel had to wade through waist-deep water to bring parties out. The parties were out of the plane when deputies got them. @Larkspurfire @CastleRockFF pic.twitter.com/B0txCSwjMM — DC Sheriff (@dcsheriff) June 16, 2024

The pilot and passenger were then transported to a nearby hospital. The FAA confirmed with 11 News Monday that the passenger had minor injuries, while the pilot’s were considered serious.

Based on the preliminary investigation, officials believe the pilot clipped a sign on the interstate while flying over, causing the plane to crash. The plane flipped over after touching down and was on its top with the wheels sticking up when rescuers got to the crash site.

Two lanes were blocked on the northbound side of the interstate for several hours. I-25 traffic was already expected to be congested Sunday in both directions due to Renaissance Festival traffic; combined with the crash, traffic was snarled for miles on the interstate.

This is a developing story; keep checking back for updates.

Rapid snowmelt prompts flood warnings, watches in parts of Colorado; minor flooding expected in Fremont County

road travel conditions colorado

DENVER — The rapid snowmelt is causing high flows in rivers and streams in some parts of Colorado, prompting the National Weather Service on Sunday to issue multiple flood warnings and watches.

Minor flooding is forecast for the Arkansas River near Cañon City, according to the NWS. The river is expected to rise above flood stage Sunday evening and rise to 10.3 feet early Monday afternoon.

The NWS said high temperatures have accelerated the mountain snowmelt in the snowy range in Albany and Carbon counties.

A flood warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Monday along the Little Laramie near the Vee-Bar Ranch and upstream and downstream of Highway 130 in Albany County.

A flood warning continues for the following rivers in Colorado:

  • Arkansas River near Avondale. Increased water releases from the Pueblo Reservoir will cause the river to rise above minor flood stage.
  • Arkansas River near Cañon City. Increased water releases from the Twin Lakes Reservoir and snow melt will cause the river to rise above minor flood stage.

A low to moderate flood threat exists along the Interstate 25 corridor and adjacent areas where slow-moving areas of heavy rain are possible, according to the Colorado Flood Threat Bulletin.

The NWS urges the public to stay away from the riverbanks as they can become unstable. Flooded roads are also a hazard to avoid as most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Temperatures are expected to rebound back into the 90s by next week.

Colorado State Patrol is cracking down on unsafe driving. Here's how to avoid a ticket

With increased traffic on Colorado roadways during the summer, the Colorado State Patrol will crack down on unsafe driving Friday.

CSP and various local law enforcement agencies will be out in full force "looking for motorists who are putting the rest of us in harm's way," CSP officials said in a news release. "On this statewide surge enforcement day, troopers will lower their tolerance for lane violations, speeding, and careless and reckless driving behaviors."

Areas around the state that experience increased traffic volumes in the summer months, such as highways 34, 40, 50, 160, and 287, along with the Interstate 70 and Interstate 25 corridors, are expected to see more troopers.

Two of the target roads, I-25 and U.S. Highway 50, converge in Pueblo.

Locally, "Troop 2D Troopers will be out in full force as we work to combat careless and reckless driving behaviors," said Capt. Michael Tafoya, commander of CSP Troop 2D, which covers southeast Colorado.

"Typically as the weather warms up, schools get let out and people begin their summer travels we see an increase in careless and reckless driving behaviors. We continuously work to deter this type of behavior in an effort to reduce the risk to the motoring public and safeguard the communities we serve."

Colorado recorded 716 deaths on its roadways in 2023, with July being the worst month on record for traffic deaths in the state. In July, 90 people were killed in a single month, according to the release.

Of the 716 deaths, 23 occurred in Pueblo County, according to CDOT.

"This year, Colorado State Troopers intend to send a clear message to drive with safety at the forefront as the season heats up despite increased congestion," CSP officials said in the release.

How to avoid a ticket

In the release, CSP officials shared a few tips on how to avoid a citation:

Follow the posted speed limits, and if conditions warrant it, drive a safe speed below the limit. Many factors determine the set speed limit on any given roadway. Oftentimes, those limits are appropriate until unforeseen circumstances call for a speed reduction. Some considerations are:

Any activity on the right shoulder, including police activity or a citizen changing a tire

Heavy traffic

Road damage

Put down all distractions.

Let the front seat passenger do the navigation and pick a back seat passenger to do the DJing.

Take advantage of a restaurant's dining rooms and avoid eating meals in the driver’s seat. Get those snacks ready and accessible before driving.

If you see an aggressive driver, keep your cool. Distance yourself from that driver and avoid eye contact. Have a passenger call *CSP and report the driver, but do not attempt to follow the vehicle.

Be certain everyone in your vehicle is buckled up; it is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.

Keep all items like coolers and handbags tightly stowed away. When breaking hard or crashing, any unsecured item can become dangerous to the occupants of your vehicle.

Never use any impairing substance before or while driving. Buzzed driving is drunk driving. The first thing to go with impairment is your decision-making, and deciding you are still okay after using your substance of choice could be the last decision you make.

"As a reminder, troopers are on high alert for seatbelt violations. Warnings will not be issued for safety restraint violations as we continue our 'Buckle Like a Boss' campaign," CSP officials said in the release. "This campaign is designed to increase Colorado’s voluntary seatbelt compliance from 88% in 2023 to meet the national average of 92%."

CDOT holds media tour on Highway 50 bridge repair status

GUNNISON, Colo. (KJCT) - Colorado Department of Transport (CDOT) hosted a media tour of progress on the US Highway 50 bridge Tuesday. The closure of the middle bridge has been a disruption for many communities on the Western Slope, especially those living around Montrose and Gunnison. The bridge is a vital roadway for emergency services, commerce, and travel.

The bridge was closed on April 18th after CDOT had inspected the bridge and found multiple cracks in some of the welds. CDOT now plans to fix the bridge with a two-phase plan that focuses on critical and long-term repairs. The first phase of repairs focuses on areas like the central bridge spans. They will use new steel plates around 20 feet in length, and weighing nearly the same as two pickup trucks. Once the first phase is complete, CDOT plans to open the bridge. They anticipate completion on July 4th.

The second phase of repairs will focus on long-term fixes, and, once completed, CDOT will fully reopen the bridge. For many, that is an outcome they have been waiting for. “...as a community, we are pretty resilient. We have lots of practice working together and bringing stakeholders together to solve complex problems. That is what we have been doing and it’s our identity as a valley.” said Liz Smith, Gunnison County Commissioner.
