US to South Africa Power Adapter: What Plug Do I Need? (2024)

Believe it or not, South Africa is more than just a safari destination. You’ve got pristine powdered beaches and captivating cosmopolitan cities to explore, not to mention an endless array of gnarly surf breaks and fascinating marine life galore.

But let’s face it, you’re really here for the big five. And we don’t blame you, for South Africa is a safari superstar par excellence. Of course, you’ll need a fully charged device to capture the splendor of the animal kingdom. Here’s everything you need to know about travel adapters in South Africa.

Which power outlets do they use in South Africa?

South Africa uses a hodgepodge array of different outlets, which varies randomly from place to place. Expect to find Type D (Commonly used in the Indian subcontinent, with three round pins), Type M (similar to D, but with larger pins), and Type N (Commonly used in Brazil) in use throughout the country.

What kind of power adapter do I need for South Africa?

If you’ve never traveled there before, you’re probably wondering, “What plug do I need for South Africa?” To charge your US devices in South Africa, you’ll need an adapter or two. Type N is only found in Brazil and South Africa and is the most frequently used outlet type in South Africa. Luckily, it’s compatible with Type C plugs that are common throughout Europe and are usually included in universal adapters like this one . If you had to buy just one adapter, we’d recommend the universal adapter because of its versatility and ability to use it beyond South Africa.

Unfortunately, for South Africa, there is not a single adapter with all three plug types, so you will have to buy three separate adapters to be sure you will be covered throughout the country.

What’s the electricity and power supply like in South Africa?

South Africa runs on 230V and 50Hz, which differs from the United States (120V/60Hz). Therefore, you may need a voltage converter to charge some American electronic appliances in South Africa. South Africa’s electrical system is less reliable than the US. Therefore, expect blackouts and power surges to occasionally occur, especially in rural regions.

Do I need a voltage converter in South Africa?

Even though South Africa runs on a different voltage and frequency to the United States, most travelers won’t need to purchase a voltage converter. These days, the vast majority of personal electronics are dual-voltage, which enables them to run on either system. A common exception is a portable hairdryer, which often uses a fixed 120V. Always check the label should you have any doubts.

Whale-watchers will want to arrive between July and November, while safaris are best in the cooler months from May to September. As for the best time to visit? Indian, African, and colonial influences define Durban, a vibrant port city with a buzzing ocean-facing promenade. If possible, catch a game at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, a unique basket-shaped construction that personifies the 2010 World Cup. The uShaka Marine World boasts an epic aquarium and loads of fun rides for the kids, while the Durban Botanic Gardens is a horticulturist’s dream. Now that the cities are done and dusted, it’s time to don a silly straw hat and get your safari on. Kruger is by far the country’s most popular reserve, and rightly so as this vast savanna is rich in exotic wildlife, particularly the coveted big five. Kruger’s extensive network of paved roads makes self-driving safari trips a breeze.

If you’d rather stray a little off the beaten track, then head north to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park on the Botswana border. Packed full of wildebeest, Springbok, and all manner of wild cats, it’s an exciting spot to safari away from the Kruger crowds. Another excellent option is the Addo Elephant National Park, where lions, hyenas, ostriches, and antelopes thrive alongside their giant grey counterparts.

4. How to Get Around in South Africa

Bus travel is viable, especially for budget travelers and those on shorter routes. Try and Intercape for point to point fares, or Baz Bus if you’d like a multi-destination hop-on, hop-off pass.

The Shosholoza Meyl train network is another excellent option: comfortable, safe, and surprisingly cheap. Long-distance routes include sleeper carriages and serve all major cities. Although shared taxis are popular with the locals, foreigners should be aware they’ll face serious security concerns. Stick with any of the above options on longer routes and use Uber for short trips around town.

What about electricity on safari?

As she prepared for my first African safari 25 years ago, Elizabeth learned that she needed adapters in order to charge her camera batteries. She was told that the electrical current in East Africa was based on the European standard of 220 volts and a converter would be needed to lower the current to the 110-120 volts system that is standard in the U.S.A.

In addition, the plugs would also be different and it was recommended that she purchase a kit, which would include the converter and a number of plug adapters. Not knowing which plugs she would find, Elizabeth packed the entire hefty kit. After arriving in Kenya, she found that only two of the adapters would be needed. She knew traveling light simplifies the travels and now Elizabeth was carrying some items that would not be needed.

A universal plug adapter makes it easy to use almost any electrical item you may bring on your safari!

Fortunately, today’s technology allows us to pack less to accomplish the same goals. Almost every electrical item you may wish to carry with you on safari is now made with dual voltage capability – eliminating the need for the heavy converter. Before you depart on your safari, please check your devices to confirm that they have the dual voltage capability.

Today it is easy to find a “universal power adapter” – one that contains all the various plug adapters in one, lightweight tool. In addition to simplifying your safari packing, this universal adapter prevents the loss of the individual adapters that are included in the kits. Individual adapters are quite small and are easily misplaced or left behind as we travel.

However, Elizabeth is yet to find a “universal” plug adapter that includes an adapter for the majority of outlets you are likely to find in South Africa.

Which Power Adapter Do You Choose?

First, it’s important to note that some remote camps do not provide electricity. It’s also important to note that some hotels and lodges have adapters in each room for guests to use at their leisure. Many of these same accommodations also have hair dryers.

Countries throughout Africa do vary in terms of their electrical receptacles. Some have a variety of different types of plugs they use, while others have one standard. So, yes, it can be a bit confusing. This is why we recommend purchasing a universal adapter before embarking on your trip to Africa.

It accepts North American two- and three-prong plugs, and has a simple straightforward design. It’s worth noting though that this set won’t work in England, Ireland, or Scotland, but there are other three packs available that will work in those countries, plus India, China, Hong Kong, Australia, and more.

Best for Europe

Other Travel Adapters We Liked

Two adapters we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list but had standout features that may meet the needs of some travelers. 

Tessan Type G Adapter : This adapter with two AC outlets plus two USB ports works in countries such as Scotland, Ireland, the UK, Hong Kong, UAE, Singapore, and various African countries. However, we found the AC outlets are too close together on the adapter to always be useful. 

Tessan Type E F Adapter : With five total ports (USB and AC) that work in numerous countries, this is a great adapter, but we think the two pack is a bit much, as one adapter already has five ports, meaning lots of travelers wouldn’t need a second adapter. This adapter is also wider than other adapters so it can take up more unnecessary space. 

The T+L team tested 12 different adapters and converters in various countries across the world. We noted what countries we were in while using the adapters or converters, and how easy it was to use each one. We also ranked them based on effectiveness, meaning how well they charged our devices, and value in terms of price versus performance. 

Tips for Buying Adapters and Converters

Research your destination.

Before leaving on your trip, be sure to check out what types of outlets are used in the countries you’re visiting, and buy adapters and converters accordingly. The last thing you’ll want is to accidentally fry your device while abroad. Some hotels provide USB ports inside hotel rooms, but it’s best to make sure they’re available before arriving empty-handed.

Consider a kit

If you’re visiting numerous countries and are in a rush, it’s sometimes easier to simply buy a kit with several adapters for multiple different destinations, which can save you money instead of buying numerous adapters. Lots of kits are small enough to tuck away in your bag or carry-on, so just be sure that you take along the ones you need.

Read the fine print

Always be sure to read the instructions that come with your adapter or converter, and be sure to pay attention to the power details. You may think a converter is safe for your styling tools or appliances when it's actually not, and you could fry your device, or blow a fuse, if the adapter doesn’t convert voltage.

An adapter is used when you need to plug a specific type of prong into a different socket. It allows you to plug your U.S.-style prong into an outlet in another country that uses a different type of plug. A converter is different in that it changes the voltage of an outlet to match the voltage of the item being plugged in. Some countries use 110/120 volts, while others use 220/240 volts. If you don’t use a converter, you could ruin your device, or even risk a fire.

If your destination has a different prong type than your outlets at home, then you’ll need an adapter. But if the voltage is different in the place you’re traveling than it is at home, you’ll need a converter to convert that voltage. Some products have dual voltage, which means the device can handle voltages from all over the world.

Most of Europe uses Type C plugs, which also fit into Type E, F, H, J, K, L, and N sockets that may replace Type C in places such as Denmark, Switzerland, and Italy. (England and the rest of the U.K. uses Type G.) Always double check exactly which one you’ll need before your departure.

What is a portable power station?

They feature lithium-ion batteries packed into well-designed user-friendly housing that offers multiple inputs and output ports. Most of the units are Lithium-ion batteries as opposed to lead-acid batteries for weight-saving characteristics and dependability. Lithium-ion is much lighter and can store energy for much longer. You can charge these batteries from standard wall outlets, from your car’s cigarette lighter, or from portable solar panels.

Most portable power stations and solar generators will offer at least one AC (Alternating Current) 110V outlet, a DC (Direct Current) cigarette lighter port, along with multiple USB ports. Lion Energy provides two wall chargers. One is a fast charger that can charge the unit in under 3 hours and one is a slow charger that will take around 9 hours.

Using their fold-up solar panels, you can connect them in parallel with their Anderson power pole connectors. Each solar panel has a long cable and then a short cable that connects to the panel next to it. The Lion 100W Solar Panel can charge the power station in 5 to 7 hours with one panel or about 3.5 hours using two panels depending on direct sunlight.

Boasting two AC 110V Outlets, one DC 12 volt port, three USB ports, and one USB-C port, the Safari LT features more than enough charging outputs for most users.

Size, Weight, and Intended Use

The unit fits perfectly next to the inverter in the rear cargo area. This is one of the features I like most about this unit specifically for the 5th gen 4Runner.

You can fill your entire cargo area from edge to edge and run this power station off to the side with more than enough room and clearance for cables, chargers, and any lines you’re running to charge accessories. The dimensions (11.8″ x 6.5″ X 7.3″) complement the back of the 4Runner quite well and to top it off the unit is incredibly light-weight (11 pounds). I’m comparing that to the other power station that we’ve been running, the Michelin XR1 weighing in at over 18 pounds. For more reference, compare this to the Dometic PLB40 at 16lbs and then the Goal Zero Yeti 400 at a whopping 29lbs!

If a light-weight station is what you are looking for, consider the Safari LT.

We plan on running a fridge and to charge other accessories like our laptops, cell phones, off-road communication radios, and much more.

Wall Charging

This thing is a beast charging from the wall. You have two different charging options directly from the wall, and this is one area where the Safari LT really shines.

For its battery size, this station has one of the fastest charge rates on the market. It can charge at an impressive 140 Watts! We tested the unit charging from the wall on the fast charger and it was consistent at around 138 to 140 Watts.

The unit was fully charged in around three hours. Optionally, you can charge the power station with a slower wall charger that pulls around 50 Watts and takes 3X as long. The faster charger is included in orders placed directly on Lion Energy’s website. No guarantee with 3rd-party sellers on Amazon or from other distributors.

Solar Power Charging

We connected both solar panels (pictured with only one above) to charge the Safari LT and we were able to pull 139-140 consistent watts in order to power the unit. Given you have direct sunlight, this will give you the ability to fully charge your power station from 0 to 100% in around three and a half hours. Again, this is one of the areas that the Safari LT really stands out from the competition. This is great if you are out exploring the backcountry for more than a few days and really need to depend on the sun to power your setup.

Eventually, we plan on mounting these solar panels to the top of our rooftop tent but for now, we have been carrying them with us in the back of the 4Runner. One thing that would make transporting the solar panels more convenient would be carrying cases. If you plan on running these solar panels on top of your roof rack or rooftop tent, you should be fine. However, if you plan on packing these for each trip, then consider casing them to prevent damage.

Output Options

Charging Ports

• AC (110V Outlets) X 2: You have two 110V outlets on the side of the unit. These have been nice for charging our phones, laptops, HAM radios, and other accessories. We actually have been using the AC ports to run the fridge over the DC (more on that later).
• DC Cigarette lighter adapter (single outlet – 12V 10Amp) X 1: One unregulated 12 volt DC port (not recommended for a running fridge but it does work).
• USB (5v 2.4amp) X 3: These have worked as expected for direct phone charges, LED lights and smaller GPS accessories.
• USB-C QC3 (quick charge) X1: Have not tested this port yet but it’s great to have a USB-C when we need it.
• 12 Volt 5Amp: Have not tested this port yet.

The Fridge Test

We tested the fridge on both the AC and DC ports. This was actually one of the most important tests for us as this is the sole reason for running this power station.

We initially tested our fridge with the DC port and everything was fine until the temperature of the fridge drops and the fridge compressor kicks on. Once our fridge needed to cool back down to a certain temperature, the compressor turned on and caused a high amperage draw.

For the full fridge test we need to look at two areas: 

Higher amperage draws

Unregulated 12v dc.

The 12V DC output is protected from over-current draws by a computer that monitors the output which causes the power to shut off. Every time the compressor kicks on to start cooling, it creates a power spike (typical with refrigerators). If these spikes are small enough or fast enough, then they won’t be noticed by the output protection on the Safari LT computer. However, if the spike lasts long enough or is big enough, then the computer will think that it is a short circuit, and it will cut the output to protect it from getting damaged. This started happening to us with our China fridge ( KaCooler.cn ) we were sent as a test unit.

I have read that this has happened to other people but it typically happens with random refrigerators or accessories that are not very commonly run. This makes sense because I am running a fridge that a random company from China shipped to me that has very few settings, and no known documentation. So, I’m going to give Lion energy a pass on this one, and more than likely the main challenge is stemming from high amperage draws when the compressor kicks on from our Chinese fridge. Perhaps these draws are lower or more consistent on Dometic, SnowMaster, ARB, Etc – time will tell.

The only downside of using this specific DC cigarette lighter adapter on the Safari LT is that the receptacle is unregulated .

What does this mean in a real-world scenario? Lets’ look at refrigerators for example.

Unregulated DC Powering Fridge

An unregulated DC output in this case means that the projected 12-volt rating will not always stay at 12 volts. It may drop down to 11 volts or even lower (10 volts, 9 volts, etc) depending on battery life, amperage draw, etc.

This is not good when you are running a fridge that requires AT LEAST a certain amount of volts to run. Most compressors and fridge computers will shut down around 10 volts to protect your vehicle battery, for example. In a perfect world, you want a battery to maintain that 12 volts or at least 11 volts to keep your fridge powered throughout the battery’s charge cycle – until it dies.

On the popular Dometic line, most of their units have high, medium, and low settings that you can program to shut your fridge off when the battery output voltage drops below a certain point. You can set that to high/11.8 volts, medium/11.2 volts, or even low/10.1 volts. Not all refrigerators are programmable and selectable though.

What if you are powering a fridge with a pre-set power shut off at 10 volts? That means if your charging battery drops under 10 volts, your fridge will shut off.

Running Fridge from AC power

Because the DC cigarette lighter adapter on the Safari LT is not regulated, I would not recommend this outlet for powering your fridge. With all that said though, it works just fine on AC power.

Running the Fridge on AC Power

Seeing how running the fridge to the DC port was not doable for our situation, we had to think about something else. Our current setup is running the fridge to the AC port on the Safari LT and then charging the Safari LT directly from the DC cigarette lighter adapter in the cargo area – directly from the 4Runner.

Before we head out for the weekend, we fully charge up the Safari LT and the fridge. Then plug the fridge into the AC outlet on the Safari LT. At this point, the fridge runs directly from the AC port on the Safai LT.

When we turn the 4Runner off/on the DC cigarette lighter adapter kicks on and charges the Safari LT until its fully powered. You may want to double-check it triggers on though. It’s worked a couple of times when we turn the truck on and others have not triggered the unit.

We’ve run this setup on a few trips now and it has worked out quite well.

Yes, the AC outlet is going to be a higher amperage draw over the DC draw but since I am running the truck for most of the day (powering the unit) and resting the unit for 10-12 hours at night (pulling from the unit), it has proved to be plenty of power through a night with about 15% power remaining on the Safari LT in the morning.

For reference, Goal Zero also has an unregulated DC receptacle on their units, and because of this, they make a 12V regulated cable adapter .

It’s so nice to have a fridge on the trail! Seriously a game-changer. The beer, sandwiches, and everything else stayed super cold. I love my flexible YETI coolers, but they just don’t compare to running a refrigerator when out for a day.

Final Thoughts

For anyone looking at power options for the back of your 4Runner, the Safari LT is literally a perfect fit. The only downside is that the 12V DC output port is not regulated but if your goal is powering a fridge then that 110V outlet will work.

This is a really Universal Power Station that can be used for more than just off-roading, powering your fridge/accessories, and Overlanding. This product can be a good go-to power solution in the garage, or even in your garden shed. I am actually thinking about running one of their batteries through a solar charge controller and inverter to run a light switch in my Tuff Shed.

Lion Energy makes some nice stuff. I am stoked to finally have a flexible solar power station in the back of the 4Runner. It’s been great for us so far. For full lake days and weekend trips out on the trail, this unit, and the solar panels have been solid. I am running their Ultimate Safari LT kit and have to say I am pretty impressed with the build quality, design, weight, and functionality. It’s not cheap but when you deal with power the good stuff usually isn’t.

I recently purchased this battery and have been using it for the past four weeks on a trip to power an ARB 50qt fridge/freezer. Here’s the thing: I haven’t yet found a way to reliably keep the battery charged. If I’m driving the 4Runner all day, there’s no problem — the battery will be charged enough to power the fridge overnight. But if the truck is not running much during the day, the battery does not get charged enough. I have the Lion off-grid package with solar panel, but that’s only useful if the truck is parked all day (exposed to sunlight). If I’m driving to one location, hiking for a few hours, then repeating throughout the day, the solar panel is not a practical option but the battery won’t get enough charging time.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? It’s a generic issue for any fridge/battery combination. I’m thinking about adding a second, deep-cycle battery to the truck, charged directly by the alternator, which would power the Lion battery for the fridge, but that seems silly (and expensive) to have two batteries doing the job of one. I wish this issue had come up in the various reviews of fridge/battery scenarios, but it’s never been mentioned, at least that I’ve seen.

The only way I’ve been able to solve the problem for this trip is to purchase a 100ft extension cord, and park near an outdoor receptacle at every hotel/motel/inn where we’ve stayed. I plug in at night and unplug in the morning. This ensures that the battery has enough power to keep the fridge going the rest of the day. But that isn’t a sustainable solution, and I really don’t want to keep doing that on future trips.

Thoughts, anyone?

Does anyone have experience in the powering of a Go-Sun cooler from this DC outlet

I am on my third Lion safari LT. The only thing that keeps me around is the customer service. They have rushed new units to my home. I type this on my phone as I reset the brand new unit and try to get it to charge my laptop. Solar panel is falling apart also, the legs are glued to the panel and tend to give away in direct sun eventually. I will be shopping elsewhere soon.

you need to do the same test on all these power supplies. Different fridges and different tests gives no reference to how they actually perform.

so the yeti 500x can run the dometic 55 for 55 hours on one charge?

the lion will run (insert random Chinese fridge) for BARELY 10 hours and you have to keep the truck running all day to use it? LOL

PLB40 ran the cfx 55 for 30 hours and had 35% left

I purchased this item last year at Overland Expo east. I have a few other issues that you did not discuss and I’ll let you know what I have done.

1) you are correct that the unregulated output is a problem. In fact I would say it makes this unit unacceptable compared to the Jackery or Goal Zero if the plan is to power a fridge.

2) Charging from the lower power brick is a joke and takes a ridiculous amount of time.

3) DC charging of the unit from the cigarette lighter plug is also a problem. It charges through the mppt controller which is set to not work below 14 volts. My 2010 Tacoma alternator puts out 13.4 volts at idle and 13.8 at 3000 RPM making the unit not chargeable that way.

After contacting the company they sent a replacement unit along with the fast charger. This allows me to charge the unit quickly either from an outlet or inverter.

While I can get one night from the battery running my fridge (Costway 44 QT) I can’t get a second night without draining the battery. I have noticed that it does not discharge evenly, The gauge seems to work like most gas gauges, slow at first than drops fast when below half full. After one night 3 of 10 bars used but with 7 bars left I can’t go through a full second night.

This, as you stated in the article requires charging the unit during the day. In order to charge the unit I have to use my inverter for a few hours once stopped, Charge via solar or get my alternator to output higher voltage.

In the Tacoma the inverter puts out 400 watts when stopped and 100 watts when moving. Unfortunately it shuts off after an hour. The fast charger doesn’t work at 100 watts.

I was able to solve the alternator output problem replacing a fuse with a diode that fools the alternator to put out an extra 1/2 and amp getting me over 14 when driving. https://www.ebay.com/itm/253363258614

I do have 50 watts of solar on my roof which helps a little but it uses the same port as the cigarette lighter plug so I can only do one or the other.

I have an additional solar generator and I recommend people have 2 units even if they are smaller units. One unit for fridge and one for everything else. Here is the concept: The fridge is the biggest user of power. When the engine is off the fridge is always powered by one unit while the other unit is used for all other devices. This allows the second unit to be in the tent or anyplace farther from the fridge than the cables can reach. Chances are the next morning the unit on the fridge is drawn down and the other unit is not. Swap the units and charge as you can. But if you can’t you should have another power to run the fridge one more night. The second reason is if one unit completely dies you have a backup to keep your fridge cold.

Had I known about the unregulated 12 volts I would not have purchased this unit as it does not power the fridge overnight that way. Which is funny because it does because the inverter is regulated. in addition to the 14 volt charging requirement. Unfortunately the Jackery 500 was not available November last year when I bought this unit.

Very nice article. I think you brought up a very valid point in that this battery unit lacks a regulated 12V DC output, which means it is a “less than perfect” solution. Having a regulated 12V DC would have been much better. Powering a 12V fridge using the 110V inverter is actually quite inefficient as most tests I’ve seen show significant drop in fridge running time.

Yeah exactly, anytime you can utilize a regulated 12Vdc to power a 12V fridge or any other 12V accessory, you should. There is always going to be a loss in efficiency running the inverter 110Vac, however with that said it’s worked well for my specific needs as of now. I can power our fridge for well over 24 hours pulling 1.2W @ .06 amps static and 50W @ 8 amp brief spikes under load when the compressor kicks on. So is it super efficient? Well, not compared to a 12Vdc receptacle, no. I still need to run some tests on the 12Vdc side under load to really compare the difference there. Those tests are coming soon to get some exact numbers. Does it work? Yes, it does. Is it perfect? Not at all.

Wyze Outdoor Power Adapter includes wire clips, screws, screw anchors, and a cable wrap. These accessories are designed to hold the adapter and cable to the wall. 

The Outdoor Power Adapter + L-shaped Micro USB Adapter Bundle also includes a weatherproof dongle with a 90 degree angled micro USB to allow it to connect to the Wyze Cam Pan v3 and Cam v3 Pro. 

The Outdoor Power Adapter + L-shaped Micro USB Adapter + L-shaped USB-C Bundle includes everything you need to connect to the Wyze Cam v3/v3 Pro/v4, Cam Pan v3 and Battery Cam Pro. 

No, Wyze Outdoor Power Adapter does not come with a camera.

Currently, the power adapter only comes in white.

This product is compatible with other Wyze products that require 5V1A or 5V2A input, which includes the Wyze Cam v3/v4 and the Cam OG series. We cannot guarantee product performance if you are trying to use it for any other non-Wyze product. 

Additionally, the Wyze Outdoor Power Adapter will only work with the Wyze Cam Pan v3 and the Cam v3 Pro when paired with the L-shaped Micro USB Adapter. For Battery Cam Pro, the Wyze Outdoor Power Adapter must be paired with the L-shaped USC-C Adapter.
