On Safari (1982 game show) facts for kids

On Safari is a British children's game show that aired on ITV from 16 February 1982 to 11 December 1984 and is hosted by Christopher Biggins and co-hosted by Gillian Taylforth.

Each week two teams (three in the first series) consisting of a child and their parent (a celebrity in the third and fourth series) played in a series of games in different jungle settings (i.e. swamps, venus fly traps etc.) and the team with the most points at the end of the show were the winners. The child from the winning team won a major prize, while the losing children went away with consolation prizes.

You wouldn't think animals and driving would make an interesting television show would you? Well, you'd be right! Unless the animals were driving as happens in all the best Disney films like... um...

Yes. Anyway, On Safari is nothing to do with the On Safari from ages ago (shame!) that was presented by professional panto dame Christopher Biggins (who, incidentally, doesn't exist for ten months of the year and is kept in a box marked 'Do not Open' between January and October). Both shows share the same title, but here the similarity ends. The original On Safari was a cheap 80s game show set in a studio played for laughs by adults. This On Safari is a slick action/adventure kids show with a genuinely impressive prize at stage. Coo!

Two teams of kids battle their way through Longleat safari park to win a trip to a real safari to Kenya to complete two day's worth of various challenges. Cleverly, the park being private property, the kids actually get to drive around in off-road vehicles (painted in zebra patterns, to make the kids look tastier to the lions, we guess). Way cool!

Day One involves two challenges: drive to a particular animal den and help the keeper there look after the animals and then drive back. And those lions are real too. Way cooler. Animal challenges include things like give a rhino a mud bath, photographing a certain llama away from the others that sort of thing. When they get back to base they are marked on style (read: driving ability) and artistic merit (read: how well they performed the challenge). Then, as reward, they get to stay the night in tents. Boys in one, girls in the other - this is CITV, not Sky One.

Cunningly, during the tasks on both days, a little side bar will pop up with 'incredible' facts on the animals and contestants, which is nice.

Day Two sees the obvious inclusion of a physical challenge like tie this bit of wood together then send it across the river using your jeep's tow cable. Kind of interesting but at the same time kind of dull. Anyway, both teams are marked and all the scores are added up. The tension is mounting... who will win? Well it's the team that has accumulated the most points, as in most shows in fact.

The winners go through to the Lion's Den, a cage-based lion enclosure which has real actual lions in it. Rather than have a gladiatorial fight to the death (this is CITV - not Bravo), the players play a game of hunt-the-keys-that-will-let-the-lions-out-so-they-can-move-to-another-room game. IF! they can find the keys hidden in the bric-a-brac in each cell and IF! they can let the lions out then they can open a cage at the end and win their prize. The kids are in separate parts of the cage to the lions, but even so it's still quite scary. On the other hand, the kids can't shout (it would scare the lions) which can make progress hard to follow, and they seem to be a little too over-rehearsed at the whole thing.

Because there is a lot of actual danger possible, there are literally swathes of assistants, professionals and animal tamers in shot to help the kids in case they get into trouble. While this certainly reassures the viewer that the kids aren't going to come to any harm, sometimes they are so prevalent - with even the camera crews getting in on the act - that it takes all the suspense out of the situation.

So, this is certainly a good stab at CITV doing something 'different' but also, interestingly, it's one of CITV's duller shows which can't decide if it wants to be a game show or a wildlife programme because it does neither particularly well. A shame, actually because it is kind of a nice idea and it's a change from those shows that shout "KAPOW! SCHWING! EIFGHERIGN! IT'S FRIDAY AFTERNOON YOU CRAZY KIDS!" at you.

Along with Get Wet and Twister , STV decided to defy logic and give this series a second airing as part of Wknd@stv a full nine years later.

On Safari is a British children's television game show programme, produced by Scottish Television for broadcast on ITV network children's strand CITV in 2000.

The show was presented by Richard McCourt and featured two teams of two children taking part in a series of challenges and tasks within a safari park , including animal-care and physical skill challenges; the winning team took part in an endgame to win a prize (usually a trip to go on safari in Africa).

The show was re-broadcast on STV in 2009 as part of their weekend children's strand wknd@stv .

‘Wheel of Fortune’: Vanna White bids an emotional goodbye to Pat Sajak

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ahead of Pat Sajak’s final episode as the host of “Wheel of Fortune,” Vanna White paid an emotional tribute to her co-host of more than 40 years.

On Thursday’s episode of the beloved game show, White honored Sajak’s work and their friendship with a video segment that featured clips and photos tracing their collaboration from the 1980s to the present.

“As this chapter of our lives is coming to an end, I know you’ll still be close by. You’re like a brother to me and I consider you a true lifelong friend who I will always adore,” she said. “I love you, Pat.”

White said that while their long-running work collaboration has been significant to her — noting that he made her feel “so comfortable and so confident” when she started — she said their personal friendship has meant much more.

“As much fun as we had on camera, those memories, milestones and life events we shared with our families, outside the studio, are my favorite,” she said, seeming to hold back tears. “We’ve watched our children grow up together, we’ve traveled all over the world, we’ve eaten hundreds of meals together. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve celebrated.”

After the prerecorded video segment ended, Sajak and White shared a hug on stage.

Sajak and White have been one of television’s most iconic duos since they started working on “Wheel of Fortune” together in 1982, when the show first aired in syndication. They have appeared in over 8,000 episodes together, with Sajak leading the contestants through the game and White famously turning the letters on the puzzle board.

Sajak announced his retirement in June 2023, making the 41st season of the show his last. White extended her contract in September through the 2025-2026 season and will help shepherd Sajak’s replacement, Ryan Seacrest, through his first two seasons at the helm.

When Seacrest was announced as Sajak’s successor, Seacrest said in a statement he was “truly humbled” to take over.

“I can say, along with the rest of America, that it’s been a privilege and pure joy to watch Pat and Vanna on our television screens for an unprecedented 40 years, making us smile every night and feel right at home with them,” Seacrest said.

Sajak’s final episode will air Friday.

Blumhouse Productions is the studio behind many modern horror films, from Paranormal Activity and The Purge to Get Out and Five Night at Freddy’s . Now, the business is expanding with Blumhouse Games, a game publishing arm. Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse, was at Summer Game Fest Friday to announce a slate of six horror games that will release under Blumhouse. These games were chosen to be strange, experimental, and deeply weird, and cover a range of art styles, genres, and methods of presentation.

The six games revealed in the Summer Game Fest trailer include:

Crisol: Theater of Idols from Vemila: A first-person adventure set on the unholy island of Tormentosa, where protagonist Gabriel must use his sanguinomancer powers in order to explore and survive.

Grave Seasons from Perfect Garbage: A Stardew Valley -esque farming sim that’s perfect for cozy gaming... as long as you’re willing to put up with the occasional murder and slow burn mystery.

Sleep Awake from Eyes Out : A surreal first-person game that takes place in the distant future, following a girl named Katja as she struggles against dangerous enemies and her own self.

Fear the Spotlight from Cozy Game Pals : An old-school survival horror game that is heavily inspired by the PlayStation 1 era, where the protagonist must solve the mystery of her local high school while avoiding the scorching daze of the deadly spotlight.

The Simulation from PlayMeStudio: A surrealist adventure where a game developer is brought in to consult on a criminal case, and the central mystery can only be solved through a horror game prototype.

Project C from Half Mermaid: This mysterious project is helmed by Sam Barlow ( Her Story , Immortality ) and Brandon Cronenberg ( Infinity Pool ).

Blumhouse will share more information on its launch titles in the future, but it’s heartening to see an investment in weird little horror games. Titles like Buckshot Roulette and Arctic Eggs have proven that there’s plenty of appetite for these strange, unnerving experiences, and I can’t wait to solve the hideous mysteries at the core of each of these games.
