Introduction

The Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel operates, performs maintenance, and runs events at the Eiffel Tower. The SETE and its staff welcome more than 6 million visitors to the Eiffel Tower every year, as part of a delegated public service contract with Paris City Hall.

What is SETE?

SETE (Société d’Exploitation de la tour Eiffel - The Eiffel Tower Operator) is a local public company. 99% is owned by the City of Paris, with the remaining 1% being owned by the Métropole du Grand Paris.

Its board of directors is chaired by  Jean-François Martins , Councillor of the City of Paris

Formed in 2005, the City of Paris chose SETE to run and maintain the Eiffel Tower. With the Eiffel Tower attracting more than 6 million visitors every year, SETE’s main tasks are to modernise its facilities, its public areas, and the services available to visitors, all as part of a strategy focusing on sustainable development and high levels of security.

SETE, with 360 staff and a turnover of €105.99m in 2022, is managed by Patrick Branco Ruivo .

It total, some 600 people work to bring the Eiffel Tower to life every day. Half are employed by SETE, with the remaining half working for sub-concessionaires and subtenants.

Who are SETE’s concessionaires and subtenants?

SETE works with leading partners to deliver high quality services to the Eiffel Tower’s visitors.

3 concessionaires:

• LxA (partnership between Lagardère and Arteum) runs the 9 souvenir shops
• The Umanis Company composed of Sodexo, in partnership with the duo of Michelin-starred chefs Frédéric Anton ("Jules Verne" restaurant) and Thierry Marx ("Madame Brasserie"), and the Ubudu start-up, runs  the food and drink concession (restaurants, take-away)
• Wika operates the telescopes.

Some parts of the Eiffel Tower are leased to subtenants:

• Public bodies: the Parisian police and fire brigade, TDF, the French Institut de radioprotection et de sûreté nucléaire, and the Météo France meteorological office
• One charity: Airparif.

What is a delegated public service? 

On 1 November 2017 the City of Paris, which owns the Eiffel Tower, chose SETE to run and maintain the monument as part of a new 15-year delegated public service contract.

An agreement signed with the City of Paris details SETE’s various responsibilities as part of the delegated public service until 2030.

“The City of Paris wants to make the Eiffel Tower an unassailable showcase for the quality of Paris’ visitor experience” (Paris City Hall press release, June 2017)

SETE’s work goes hand in hand with a real desire to place visitors at the core of its concerns, by developing an extensive transformation programme built upon three pillars:

• An improved visitor experience: with more online ticket sales, an expansion of the Eiffel Tower’s perimeter to enclose the gardens around the monument, an overhaul of the customer experience (signage, events, guided tours, security), and the modernisation of the services and facilities available to visitors (WiFi, etc.)
• Maintenance of the monument : through refurbishment work which includes enhanced security and accessibility (protective perimeter and landscaping), renovation of the second floor, and maintenance work (North lift, paintwork and sparkling)
• Boosting the monument’s national and international reputation : through involvement in the City of Paris’ major events (Olympic Games/Universal Expo) and its own events, developing the Eiffel Tower’s heritage online, and coordinating its online community

SETE works with the assets provided by the City of Paris:

• The monument as a whole, excluding the TDF antennae
• The gardens around the monument, the square on the ground and adjoining premises
• The Eiffel Tower’s lifts and all of its facilities and equipment
• Intellectual, commercial, and industrial property rights
• Archives and operational assets

Client watchdog

In 2008, SETE created a client watchdog body, enabling it to learn more about visitors to the Eiffel Tower and to evaluate their level of satisfaction regarding their visit and the services offered.

In 2019, the results show a high level of satisfaction:

• 96 % would recommend the visit to a friend or their family

The Iron Lady: How the Eiffel Tower Ascended to Greatness

Born out of a grand competition announced in 1886, the Eiffel Tower, or 'La Dame de Fer' as the French fondly call her, was envisioned as a way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution during the Exposition Universelle, a world's fair held in Paris. The project began on January 26, 1887, guided by the expertise of Gustave Eiffel, his engineers Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, and architect Stephen Sauvestre.

Their plan was audacious: construct an iron tower rising 300 meters high with 18,038 individual metallic parts held together by 2.5 million rivets. This feat of engineering, completed in record time by up to 300 workers on site, spanned just over two years, culminating in the Tower's completion on March 31, 1889.

Throughout its construction, the Eiffel Tower faced significant opposition. Artists and intellectuals of the day published manifestos against this "useless and monstrous" structure, predicting it would overshadow Paris's traditional architectural beauty. Like Rome, she's a beauty you need to see once, to admire, to love, and then to carry in your heart forever. Please meet us outside the Eiffel Tower and please do not pass through any security checks . You will find us outside the South Security Entrance ( Entrance #1 ) of the Eiffel Tower on Allée des Refuzniks. (The Alléee des Refuzniks is a dirt footpath just outside of the Eiffel Tower near the trees and the benches.) 

Our team will be wearing orange hats and holding an orange sign that says “ ExperienceFirst .”

The check-in starts 30 minutes before the start time . Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour time because the tour usually starts on time . I f you booked through Paris Pass, please have your Paris passes readily available so that you can get checked in by our staff and get your passes scanned.

History and Fun Facts about the Théâtre de la Tour Eiffel

Despite taking its name from the French for the ‘Eiffel Tower Theatre’, please note that the Théâtre de la Tour Eiffel is not located on the Eiffel Tower! However, it is very easy to find (without climbing its 1,665 steps) at 4 Square Rapp in the very chic and elegant Gros-Caillou district, a gem of Paris’ 7th arrondissement. Located in a charming cul-de-sac, just a stone's throw from the Champ-de-Mars, it is inarguably dominated by the magnificent and captivating ‘Tour Eiffel’ - otherwise known as Paris’ ‘Iron Lady’, or of course the Eiffel Tower. The Théâtre de la Tour Eiffel was built between 1912 and 1915 in an Art Nouveau style, with a traditional Italian configuration to allow for a beautiful theatre experience, from its visual to its auditory assets. Its cream and purple hall has been the performance venue of some of the finest in international pianists and musicians.

Today, a new management aims to bring this beautiful building back to the forefront of the glittering Parisian theatre scene by presenting an array of very different shows, ranging from stand-up to mentalism to classical theatre, not forgetting universally beloved musical performances. A charming marriage between contemporary venues and classic French culture awaits beyond the Théâtre de la Tour Eiffel’s inviting doors!

Roissy inondé, foudre sur la Tour Eiffel, vignoble du Chablis ravagé : les images des terribles orages qui ont frappé la France

EN IMAGES - De grosses intempéries ont frappé le nord-est et le nord-ouest du pays dans la nuit de mercredi à jeudi.

Ce n’est pas encore tout à fait le beau temps, mais les violents orages qui ont frappé le pays dans la nuit ont cessé ce jeudi matin. Parfois accompagnés de grêle , ils ont donné lieu à des scènes apocalyptiques dans le nord-ouest et le nord-est du pays, notamment en Île-de-France. Une femme de 57 ans est même décédée à Courmelles , dans l’Aisne, emportée par une coulée de boue. Dans le Chablis, certains vignobles ont été dévastés.

Le site Keraunos recense 18.589 éclairs le 1er mai et 6036 le 2 mai à 8 heures et demie. À titre de comparaison, un seul et unique éclair est recensé pour la journée du 29 avril dernier. Le Figaro revient en images sur ces orages exceptionnels .

Scènes de chaos en Île-de-France

L’Île-de-France a été particulièrement touchée par ces fortes perturbations. Sur l’autoroute A1 dans l’Oise, des véhicules étaient à l’arrêt en raison de violentes chutes de grêle, rapporte Météo Express.

À Tremblay-en-France, une commune de Seine-Saint-Denis (93), « des grêlons de la taille d’une balle » sont tombés, couvrant la chaussée et les voitures d’une pellicule blanche.

Chutes importantes de grêle encore en Seine-et-Marne, comme ici dans le village de Ozoir-la-Ferrière.

Roissy sous les eaux

Ces orages ont par ailleurs fortement perturbé le trafic aérien. Le tableau de bord de l'organisme Eurocontrol indiquait à 22h52 mercredi que les deux aéroports parisiens, Orly et Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, étaient fermés. Le site Flightradar précise qu’une dizaine d'avions qui devaient atterrir à l'aéroport de Roissy ont été déroutés, de même que des vols à destination d'Orly.

Le terminal 2 de l'aéroport de Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle a par ailleurs été inondé. Les images d’apocalypse relayées sur les réseaux sociaux montrent l’eau se déverser au milieu de l’aéroport.

C’est l’une des images les plus fortes de cette nuit de perturbations. La Tour Eiffel a été frappée par la foudre cette nuit. Un phénomène saisissant, mais qui n’a rien d’exceptionnel, un paratonnerre ayant été installé sur la Dame de fer.

Les vignes du Chablis touchées

La Bourgogne n’a pas été épargnée. À Chablis, dans l’Yonne, plusieurs viticulteurs font état de « dégâts considérables » après que la grêle s’est abattue sur les vignes. La Côte d'Or a également été frappée, comme ci-dessous dans la commune de Vesvres.

En fait, à la TV les grêlons étient de la taille d'une grosse bille (un calot agathe qu'on disait avant). S'ils étaient de la taille d'une balle, ils auraient fait plus de dégats. Ce matin, sur France-Info, un vigneron parlait de grêlons gros comme des balles de ping-pong. Donc D = 40 mm. Pour ce diamètre, la vitesse limite du grêlon (sphérique) est de 105 km/h et son impact sur une tuile est équivalent à laisser tomber sur la tuile une boule de pétanque de 800 g d'une hauteur de 1.7 m. Un grêlon de 50 mm, c'est une vitesse limite du grêlon est de 120 km/h et l'équivalent d'un lacher de boule d'une hauteur de 4.2 m. Un grêlon de 10 mm est inoffensif (équivalent lacher de boule de pétanque de 7 mm de hauteur). Post-scriptum: plus il y a d'évaporation au sol, plus les cellules orageuses seront porteuses de gros grêlons.

La météo du mercredi 1er mai: violents orages et fortes pluies sur l’ensemble du territoire

Des pluies abondantes sont attendues sur le Languedoc le Massif-Central ou le Limousin. Le bassin parisien est quant à lui traversé par de forts orages.

Météo du jeudi 2 mai: temps automnal et neige en montagne

Pluies et averses sont encore attendues ce jeudi après les orages du 1er mai. La neige fait également son retour en montagne dès 1200 à 1800 mètres selon les massifs.

Averses, vent et grisaille... La météo s’annonce maussade ce week-end

Ce week-end, le temps s’annonce instable et perturbé avec des averses, au caractère parfois orageux, le samedi. Une lueur d’espoir se dessine pour la journée du dimanche, mais une partie de l’hexagone restera pluvieux. Sortez couverts!

Why it's illegal to photograph the Eiffel Tower at night - but not during the day

The Eiffel Tower in Paris is one of the most photographed monuments in the world.

What many people don’t realise, however, is it’s actually illegal to take pictures of the structure at night.

Even snapping a sneaky selfie with the illuminated tower in the background is technically breaking the law.

This is because the lighting is officially classified as a work of art and due to  European Copyright Law remains under the domain of the late Pierre Bideau, the engineer who designed the current system, which was installed in 1985.

Copyright lasts for 70 years after a person’s death, and as Bideau only died in 2021, there’s a while yet before it expires.

According to  La Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel  (SETE), the building’s operating company, anyone wanting to publish a photo of the tower at night should request permission, pay for rights, and then credit the artist appropriately. Otherwise, there’s risk of fines.

The law, however, is mainly aimed at commercial use, so it’s unlikely you’ll get in trouble for taking photos for personal use.

Speaking to Condé Nast Traveller , leisure and brand photographer Marc Nouss has previously said: ‘We are talking about a monument photographed thousands of times per day.

‘I still shoot it without mentioning anything, as everyone does. But I wouldn’t take the risk by selling one taken at night.’

Taking pictures of the tower during the day is totally fine as the man who designed the structure, Gustave Eiffel, died in 1923, more than 100 years ago, so no copyright remains.

And capturing the impressive view from the top of the tower is also OK, day or night. A message on the SETE website reads: ‘The views from the Eiffel Tower are rights-free.’

Eiffel Tower light show

The Eiffel Tower lighting system has light-sensitive twilight sensors, which causes the tower to light up within less than 10 minutes of dusk.

The timing varies depending on when the sun goes down, though the lights always switch off at 11.45pm. It used to be later, but was brought forward in 2022 as part of Paris’s energy saving efforts.

For the first five minutes of each hour, the tower’s 20,000 bulbs flash, creating a sparkling effect.
