Bangkok to Singapore

15 days | take a spicy adventure from thailand to singapore, via malaysia.

Intrepid travellers stop to enjoy street food in Kuala Lumpur

Travel from Bangkok to Singapore on a voyage of discovery, soaking up culture and revelling in the flavours of the region. With golden temples, soft white beaches and bright blue skies, tantalising seafood and a host of shopping spots, our journey from Thailand down to the Malay Peninsula is sure to delight.

Trip overview

  • Dive into a nature lover’s paradise at Khao Sok National Park, exploring, hiking, relaxing, and cruising by longtail boat on a limestone cliff-circled lake.
  • Taste Thai traditions while learning how to cook authentic dishes with your host, during a village visit in Krabi.
  • Encounter the fusion of cultures that gives Penang a unique atmosphere; walk down the backstreets where colonial buildings, tumble-down shops and hawker-filled alleyways meld with cool street art.
  • Find a slice of paradise on an included sea kayaking trip through the stunning inlets, caves and hidden lagoons of the Baan Bor Tor mangrove forests.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation. Donations help educate school children on important environmental issues like climate change, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainability.
  • You’ll get to travel overland through multiple countries on this trip, which means that there are some longer travelling days on public and private buses – as well as an overnight train – but it also offers a great chance to interact with your fellow travellers, soak up the scenery, or catch up on some podcasts or your travel journal.
  • Conservative dressing will be appreciated during the village visit.

Sa-wat dee! Welcome to Thailand. Thailand's bustling capital, Bangkok is famous for its tuk-tuks, khlong boats and street vendors serving up delicious Thai food. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. Bangkok has so much to offer those with time to explore, so perhaps arrive a day or so early and take a riverboat to Chinatown and explore the crowded streets, uncover the magnificent Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, wander down the tourist mecca of Khao San Road, or indulge in some Thai massage. After the meeting tonight perhaps gather your fellow travellers together and tuck into some into world famous street food.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Bangkok - Tuk Tuk Experience Urban Adventure - THB2500
  • Bangkok - Chinatown Sights and Bites Urban Adventure - THB1960

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Begin the day with a river cruise down the Chao Phraya River to explore the famous ‘khlongs’ (canals) (approximately 1 hour). Life along these canals seems a world away from the chaotic streets of the capital. Pay a visit to Wat Pho, one of the Bangkok temples, with a 46-metre-long gold-plated Buddha reclining inside. Even the feet of this statue are incredible, three metres long and intricately decorated with mother of pearl. The temple grounds are equally fascinating, filled with beautifully decorated stupas, halls, and shrines. No trip to Thailand is complete without an overnight train journey and this evening you’ll head south to Surat Thani, accommodated in air-conditioned sleeping berths (approximately 12 hours). Multi share compartments have bunk beds, with sheets and pillow provided, your baggage travels in the carriage with you and there is a food and drink service available on board.

  • Overnight sleeper train (1 night)
  • Bangkok - Khlong boat canal tour
  • Bangkok - Wat Pho
  • Bangkok - Thai Massage - THB250
  • Bangkok - Grand Palace - THB500
  • Bangkok - Jim Thompson's House - THB200

There are shared hotel rooms available this afternoon if you would like to freshen up or organise your luggage. One room will be shared between up to 4 members of the group.

Arrive into Surat Thani in the morning and then travel by minivan to Khao Sok (approximately 2.5 hours). Set amid hectares of thick jungle, waterfalls, limestone cliffs and topped off with an island-studded lake, the national park of Khao Sok is a nature lover's paradise. Here you’ll have free time to explore one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Walk along the dirt trails that snake through the quiet park, looking out for wildlife as you head for rivers and waterfalls. The flora is also top-notch, with the rare Rafflesia Kerri, one of the world’s largest flowers, only found in Thailand here. Spend a night in a rustic hut amid ancient gnarled rainforest trees.

  • Resort (1 night)

Travel through pristine jungle, rubber and oil plantations before boarding a long tail boat for a ride across stunning Cheow Lan Lake, with one of its islands as your destination. With limestone karst hills rising almost 1000 metres into the air and surrounded by beautiful green waters, the area is incredibly picturesque. Trek to an island cave and discover its eerie stalactites and bats hanging from the ceiling, with subterranean streams at your feet. You’ll enjoy lunch in a local raft-house before having free time to relax, swim or kayak around the lake to search for wildlife – the water is clear and teems with aquatic life, and you might spot hornbills, langurs, macaques or gibbons above water. Return to your accommodation for the night.

  • Khao Sok - Cheow Lan Lake tour
  • Khao Sok - Rafthouse lunch

Head to Ao Nang in a private minivan (approximately 3 hours). On the way, stop at Baan Bor Tor and embarking on a sea kayaking journey. About halfway along the coast between Than Bok Khoranee and Krabi town is a bay of mangroves that might just be the most beautiful bay in Thailand. Surrounded by towering karst formations and many small offshore islands, let the waterways become your pathway as you move slowly through the bays and canyons, discover inlets, caves and hidden lagoons, and check out the local wildlife up-close – the birds overhead and monkeys in the trees. If you do see a monkey, make sure you secure your belongings and any food! Arrive at Ao Nang late afternoon, and enjoy a free evening.

  • Ao Nang - Baan Bor Tor sea kayaking
  • Ao Nang - sea kayaking lunch

Your included sea kayaking trip in Krabi is in double kayaks. The water is usually calm through the beautiful mangrove forests, but you will need to be a confident swimmer to take part.

Famous for the incredible limestone karst scenery of the headland, sun-seekers will fall in love with Krabi's unspoilt beaches, the spectacular cliffs will tempt avid rock climbers, while scuba fans can embark on a Krabi diving adventure. If you love getting out on the water and exploring islands, then consider taking a trip by boat to explore Phi Phi and Khai Nok, islands surrounded by white sandy beach perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The area around Krabi is also home to some of the most spectacular climbing routes around. Whether you're a novice or a pro, being securely tied high up a limestone cliff-face looking down on jungle and crystalline seas is unforgettable. In the evening, look out for a beautiful sunset and consider dining on seafood in a beachside restaurant, followed by a drink in one of the many clubs and bars along on the beach.

  • Ao Nang - Rock Climbing - THB1800
  • Ao Nang - Phi Phi Island Day Tour - THB1600

This morning head onto a small village called Baan Mod Tanoy (approximately 2 hours drive). On arrival, enjoy a walk around the village and gain some insights into their day to day life. Then time to enjoy the great food and hospitality of the village. Get your hands dirty at Batik handkerchief Dyeing and learn a few tricks from the local craftsman of this traditional art. Your accommodation tonight in the village is a local resort so take the chance to enjoy the peaceful rural night.

  • Trang - Mod Tanoy village walking tour
  • Trang - Mod Tanoy village community activities
  • Trang - Mod Tanoy village community lunch

The journey by private minibus sees you say goodbye to Thailand and wave hello to the cultural melting pot of Malaysia. The fascinating island of Penang was the first destination of the colonial British in 1786. They invited the Chinese, as well as others from all over Asia, to live on this island in the tropics. Today, this exotic fusion of cultures still exists and the World Heritage site of Georgetown contains a fascinating mix of religious places of worship. When you arrive, you’ll take an orientation walk around the blend of colonial buildings, tumble-down shops and hawker-filled alleyways to get your bearings. The food here might just be the best in Malaysia, so seek out some food stalls with your leader, and get a taste of this food paradise on an included Hawker food tour. Sample some local specialties such as Nasi Kandar, Penang Laksa, and Char Kway Teow.

  • Penang - Hawker food experience

Today's driving will be about 7 hours including border crossing and breaks

This morning you’ll take a half-day sightseeing walking tour around Penang and Georgetown, soaking up the relaxed pace of life and the mix of cultures on show in this heritage area. See the original 19th century shophouses, the street markets, and the strong cultural and religious identity still on display in each neighbourhood – Little India, Chinatown or the Muslim Quarter. Check out the street art that adorns the walls and stop by a clan jetty. Clans were formed by 19th century immigrants, banding together based on the area of China that they came from, and they built rival waterfront societies on wooden jetties. You’ll also pay a visit to Thai and Burmese temples, and see Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in South East Asia. You’ll have this afternoon free and, aside from sauntering along the interesting streets (or hoping in a trishaw for a ride that will take you back in time), you might want to see the clan house of Khoo Kongsi. Check out the ornate carvings on the walls, roof and pillars, and maybe see more Chinese architecture in the memorably blue Courtyard House of Cheong Fatt Tze, a fabulously wealthy merchant. Don’t forget to feast on the island’s culinary delights tonight.

  • Penang - Walking tour, including Clan Jetty & Kek Lok Si Temple
  • Penang - Khoo Kongsi - MYR10
  • Penang - Funicular Railway - MYR55
  • Penang - Teluk Bahang National Park - MYR9

Continue south on a local bus to Kuala Lumpur (approximately 5 hours). This is a great opportunity to try and chat with the locals and maybe get some tips out of them for your next destination. Kuala Lumpur, the cosmopolitan capital of Malaysia, is affectionately known as KL and you'll almost always hear locals refer to it by its acronym. Communities of Indian, Chinese and ethnic Malay people mingle peacefully, allowing travellers to get the best of all three worlds. KL has grown from a sleepy little village to a skyscraper-lined multi-million-peopled metropolis. The city can seem vast, but the main focus is the traditional core of the old town (the former colonial centre), the luxury hotel and shopping mall district of the Golden Triangle, and bustling Chinatown and Little India. Follow your leader on an orientation walk near the hotel and in the evening follow the Bukit Bintang Walkway and see the Petronas Twin Towers lit at night. You’ll be incredibly spoilt with the breadth and quality of dining options on offer. From simple-street side fare that attracts queues of customers eager to try the latest dish said to be the best around, to seriously high-calibre, world-class cuisine.

  • Kuala Lumpur – Leader-led orientation walk

Enjoy a free day today for your own exploration! Perhaps visit the National Monument (commemorating those who died in Malaysia's struggle for freedom and based on the Iwo Jima Memorial in the USA), the vast National Mosque, featuring a bold and modern design, or the Istana Negara (National Palace). You might like stroll Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square), or shop in Suria KLCC (one of Malaysia’s premier shopping destinations) and then head up to the Skybridge & Observation Deck of the iconic Petronas Towers to gain another view on this cosmopolitan city. Lake Gardens is home to a number of sights, including the National Planetarium and the superb Islamic Arts Museum. Or if you are more active, you may like to join a bike tour and cycle through the history and modern life of KL. In the evening you may wan to experience the multicultural mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian cultures through sampling some of its best food. Walk around local neighbourhoods and visit local grocers and street vendors. Your leader will be on hand making suggestions to help you make the best of the day.

  • Kuala Lumpur - KL Tower - MYR49
  • Kuala Lumpur - Petronas Towers Skybridge & Observation Deck - MYR98
  • Kuala Lumpur - Planetarium - MYR12
  • Kuala Lumpur - Islamic Arts Museum - MYR14

We recommend booking tickets to Petronas Towers in advance to ensure you don't miss out. For more information, visit https://www.petronastwintowers.com.my/visit-and-experience/

Transfer by local bus to the old port town of Melaka (approximately 3 hours). Back when Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore left little impression on a map, the historic city of Melaka was the most important trading port in Malaysia, attracting Chinese, Indian, Dutch, Portuguese and British traders. These visitors sought wealth or an opportunity to control the Straits of Malacca, a vital trading route between the Indian and Pacific oceans, which lead to 400 years of colonial rule. Today, Melaka's wealth of historical sites reminds visitors of times gone by, and its multicultural past is revealed in its distinctive cuisine. Like Georgetown, the Melaka was declared a World Heritage Site in 2008, and like its Penang sibling, the city is a harmonic mix of cultures, a place where colonial buildings sit next to Chinese shophouses and temples.

Today you’ll get to know this port city better with a quaint trishaw tour along the narrow winding streets. You’ll admire Chinatown's unique Peranakan architecture, get a taste of old Melaka, and learn about the ancient spice trade. Take in sites such as Harmony Street (so called because it contains the prayer houses of Malaysia's three main faiths), and stop by a mosque, Chinese Buddhist Temples, and a traditional Muslim house-museum. In your free time this afternoon there are plenty of historic sights and museums to check out. From 17th century Dutch buildings and ships, to museums that showcase the local history of ethnic Chinese-Malays, the travels of diplomat and explorer Zheng He, and even a museum that focuses on concepts of beauty in different cultures. If you’re looking to get more active, then you could perhaps jump on two wheels for an Eco Bike tour around the city or see Melaka from a different perspective with a boat tour along the river.

  • Melaka - Trishaw sightseeing tour
  • Melaka - Stadhuys - MYR10
  • Melaka - Taming Sari Tower - MYR23
  • Melaka - Cheng Ho Museum - MYR20
  • Melaka - Eco Bike Tour - MYR120
  • Melaka - Museum Of Enduring Beauty - MYR1
  • Melaka - River Tour - MYR30
  • Melaka - Half day cycling tour - MYR200

Travel by local bus to the last stop on this incredible journey – Singapore (approximately 5 hours). Singapore has few areas untouched by modernisation, however wandering the streets of Little India and Chinatown is a great way to see the old parts of the city. To explore further, check out the renowned shopping precinct of Orchard Road, or stop by Raffles to experience the old world charm of a Singapore Sling. An evening in Singapore is not complete without a stroll along Clarke Quay, or even a river cruise to learn more about the fascinating history of this city. Your accommodation tonight is a centrally located hotel, perfect for easy exploring. Whatever you choose today, maybe gather together your fellow travellers for a celebratory drink or meal as your Bangkok to Singapore adventure comes to an end.

Some rooms in tonight’s accommodation are internal and do not have windows. Border crossing into Singapore can be slow, so some patience at the border would go a long way.

There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time.

10 breakfasts, 3 lunches

Singapore to Bangkok – Malay Peninsula 3-4 Week Itinerary

singapore thailand trip

This open-jaw itinerary starts in Singapore and crosses the whole Malay Peninsula, finishing in Bangkok, Thailand. I am sharing here this itinerary from Singapore to Bangkok because that’s what I did and it worked well for me, but you can of course plan it the other way around from Bangkok to Singapore.

Just a word about the climate of the Malay Peninsula: there are two main seasons, a dry season and a rainy season. When the eastern coast is dry, the western coast is rainy. For the next half of the year, it’s the other way around.

This itinerary is best attempted between November and April, as it is the dry season on the whole west coast of the peninsula. Penang, Langkawi, Krabi, and Phuket will most likely be very sunny.

If you are traveling between April and November, I would suggest crafting an itinerary along the west coast instead. You could for example visit Tioman and Redang islands in Malaysia, and the Koh Samui region in Thailand.

The Itinerary at a Glance

  • Trip Type: Backpacking, Independent travel
  • Itinerary Shape: Open Jaw
  • Starting Point: Singapore
  • Ending Point: Bangkok, Thailand
  • Duration: 3 to 4 weeks
  • Countries crossed: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand
  • Transportation Modes: Bus, Ferry, Train
  • Best Season: November to April, dry season in the islands

You might be surprised that I put “3-4 days” here. For the non-initiated, it often looks like Singapore is just a bunch of skyscrapers that you have seen in an afternoon. Singapore is much more than that! There are a lot of wonderful places to explore.

I put a conservative “3-4 days” here if you just want to have a good overview of the city-state, but if you have the time you can stay the whole week without having to worry about being bored.

Singapore - Chinatown

Singapore → Malacca, Malaysia

  • Bus: 250 km (155 mi), 3:30 hours

You are now ready to cross the first border of this itinerary. You will soon be visiting Malaysia! I did this route a few times with various operators, and they all offer a similar level of service. I wouldn’t be able to recommend a specific bus company. You can google “bus Singapore to Malacca” and you will be presented with a whole variety of options. You can then choose the one that quits your needs, in terms of pick-up location, price, and timings.

Singapore is linked to Malaysia by two bridges, in Tuas and Woodlands. Both options are possible but from central Singapore, you will probably take the Woodlands one.

You will need to get off the bus at the Singaporean checkpoint before the bridge to get your exit stamp on the passport, and get off again after the bridge at the Malaysian checkpoint to get your passport stamped to enter Malaysia. Of course, the bus will wait for everybody to be back on board before continuing its journey.

Malacca, Malaysia

Malacca is a very pleasant city full of history that deserves a couple of days. Its rich patrimony is the result of successive Portuguese, Dutch and English colonization; plus influences from its large Chinese population. A walk in Chinatown is a must-do! You will be amazed by the richly decorated temples.

Take the time to have a walk along the Malacca River and visit the Portuguese heritage like the remains of the A Famosa fortress, and the Saint Paul’s Church. As for the Stadthuys, built by the Dutch, it is one of the most famous places in Malacca – and surprising by its Dutch architecture and red walls. The Stadthuys building can be found in Dutch Square, also called Red Square.

For an aerial overview of the city, try a fun ride on the Taming Sari Tower.

Malaysia - Malacca

Malacca → Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

  • Bus: 140 km (86 mi), 2 hours

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

You are now in Malaysia’s capital city! With its mix of modernity, tradition and various architectural influences, Kuala Lumpur totally deserves at least a couple of days. It is easy to get around Kuala Lumpur with the metro system and the Komuter trains.

As soon as you arrive, you will be attracted like a magnet to the impressive Petronas Towers, that remained the tallest buildings in the world for a long time. Cross the Suria mall to access the KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Center) Park, a welcoming oasis of greenery in the heart of the city.

Malaysia - KLCC

If you like a little jungle walk, follow the trail at Bukit Nanas (Nanas Hill) all the way to the KL Tower. From there, you can enjoy an unbeatable view over the whole of Kuala Lumpur. Don’t miss it! I particularly recommend sunset time.

Want some shopping? Walk along Jalan Sultan Ismail and you will find various modern shopping malls.

For a more traditional atmosphere, you can stroll in the Central Market (try the fish spa experience!), around the pretty Masjid Jamek mosque and in the Little India area.

Escape the busy downtown by visiting the KL Bird Park and the Perdana Gardens, stopping at the National Mosque (Masjid Negara) on the way.

If you feel like taking some time away from the city, take the train from KL Sentral station to the Batu Caves, north of the city. The caves are impressive by their size and they are an interesting religious place.

When you arrive at the caves, you will be welcome by a huge golden statue of Murugan, an Hindu deity, and 272 stairs to climb! Be careful of the monkeys, they like to steal stuff from people, but they are really fun to watch.

Inside the gigantic caves were built two Hindu temples with their typical features such as a small gopuram (the pyramid-shaped part on the roof with many statues).

Kuala Lumpur → Penang, Malaysia

  • Bus: 350 km (217 mi), 4 hours

Penang is a beautiful island off the western coast of Malaysia . To go there, you have two options. You can either take a bus or train to Butterworth and then a ferry to Penang, or take a bus from Kuala Lumpur directly to Penang (the island is linked to the mainland by two bridges).

I chose this option as I felt it would be more comfortable. Once again, there are various bus companies that will most likely offer you the same level of service. I can recommend a bus service called Nice Coaches – they have nice modern coaches and they leave from the KTM station in downtown Kuala Lumpur, which is really great.

Penang, Malaysia

You have a few options concerning where to stay in Penang. The island is quite big and there are several towns and beaches you can stay at, such as Batu Ferringhi for example. If you are craving a nice seaside holiday, it would be a good option.

However, I think it is more convenient to stay in Georgetown . You can’t miss the visit to the old town and its historical treasures. Just like Malacca’s Historical Center, the Old Town of Georgetown is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Beautifully decorated Chinese temples, elegant mosques, colorful shophouses, and an enchanting atmosphere is awaiting you as you stroll around the town.

If you are ready for some trekking, spend a day on the trails of the Penang National Park . You can take the bus 101 to the park’s entrance. There are two paths you can choose. One is shorter and easier and follows the northern coast of the park to a lighthouse. The other one crosses the jungle to secluded beaches. That’s the one I chose.

Bear in mind that this is a real jungle and the paths can sometimes be uphill and challenging. Don’t go too far if your level of fitness doesn’t allow it! But if you can, the wild beaches and the strange Meromictic Lake will be beautiful rewards. Before leaving, make sure to buy a lunch box and water from the small shop across the road at the park’s entrance.

Malaysia - Penang NP

Penang → Langkawi, Malaysia

  • Ferry: 115 km (71 mi), 3 hours

It is easy to reach Langkawi from Penang by ferry. The trip takes around 3 hours depending on the weather conditions. In Langkawi, you will arrive at the jetty in Kuah, Langkawi’s main city.

Langkawi, Malaysia

Langkawi, the jewel of the Malaysian state of Kedah, is definitely a highlight of this itinerary. Beyond its large main island, Langkawi is an archipelago of no less than 104 islands. Its karstic scenery is truly spectacular, particularly as seen from the cable car.

You will get off the ferry in Kuah, Langkawi’s main city. Take some time to walk or ask a taxi to take you to the nearby Eagle Square , famous for its big statue of a fishing eagle, the symbol of Langkawi.

You can of course choose to stay anywhere on the island but I would recommend staying around the popular Cenang Beach (pronounced “ tchenang “) as it is where most touristic activities are located, and most points of interest of Langkawi are easily accessible from there.

To go around, you can rent a car for the length of your stay, or you can rent scooters directly on the spot. I found it to be a really pleasant and fun way to explore the island.

As for things to do and see, the #1 attraction not to miss is definitely the cable car . The touristy “Oriental Village” (from which u get on the cable car) can feel a little soulless and totally artificial, the views of the wild mountains that you get from the mountain tops are unforgettable. The Sky Bridge is pretty cool too. Try to plan this attraction on the sunniest day of your stay.

Other tours that are worth doing are the one exploring the Kilim Geoforest Park and the Dayang Bunting Island .

Malaysia - Kilim

Langkawi → Satun (Thailand)

  • Ferry: 40 km (25 mi), 1:15 hour

It is now time to leave Malaysia behind and enter the third and last country of this trip, Thailand. Instead of crossing the border by land via Hat Yai (not the most interesting nor the safest), it is much easier to do it by ferry .

In order to take your ferry, you will need to go back to Kuah, at the same ferry terminal as when you arrived from Penang. At your arrival in Satun (at Tammalang Pier, to be precise), you will get your passport stamped with no difficulty at all.

Satun → Krabi, Thailand

  • Bus: 288 km (179 mi), 5 hours

Once you have officially entered Thailand , you will quickly find a bus for your next destination: Krabi! The trip feels a little long, especially when you already just had a ferry transfer. But take it as a necessary evil for the several days in paradise that await you!

Krabi (Ao Nang Beach), Thailand

I personally really enjoyed Ao Nang Beach for its very laid-back, holiday atmosphere. Everywhere is packed with hotels and restaurants. It is easy to spend 3 or 4 days (or more!) there without being bored. There are tons of islands to explore in the region and they are all so beautiful that no matter which ones you choose to visit, it will be a delight!

Not much to visit in Ao Nang, it is pure relaxed holiday time, enjoying the beach and the dream islands if you are into that.

Thailand - Krabi

Krabi → Phuket, Thailand

  • Bus: 180 km (112 mi), 3 hours

It is now time to move on and get to the world-famous island of Phuket. In order to do that, you can arrange with your hotel a taxi that will take you to the bus terminal, from which you will be able to wait for a bus to Phuket. Depending on where you stay on the island, you will need to take another taxi to reach your hotel.

Phuket (Patong Beach), Thailand

Phuket is a large island and you have quite a few options to choose from when deciding where to stay. I personally chose Patong Beach because it’s the most touristic part and I thought it would be a good introduction to Phuket.

The atmosphere is a little different from Ao nang Beach in Krabi, still laid-back but quite dynamic at the same time, with a rich nightlife that you won’t find in Ao Nang Beach.

Patong Beach itself is beautiful and lined with coconut palms and gardens. Get a hotel with a balcony with view to the beach! There are very affordable ones.

At night, the random-looking Bangla Road wakes up – It gets closed to the cars and becomes the Bangla Walking Street. All the bars come to life, illuminated by colorful lights. You do not need to be a customer of prostitution to enjoy it. I believe such places are interesting to experience once for any traveler in Thailand because it’s quite unique!

If you couldn’t make it to the Phi Phi Islands from Krabi, it is also very easy to visit them from Phuket.

Thailand - Phuket

Phuket → Surat Thani, Thailand

  • Bus: 217 km (135 mi), 4:30 hours

Once you have got a little overview of Phuket, it is time to go to the last stop of this trip, Thailand’s capital city – Bangkok. In order to do that, you will first need to reach the city of Surat Thani on the other side of the peninsula.

Surat Thani → Bangkok, Thailand

  • Night Train: 655 km (407 mi), 9-12 hours

That’s the second part of your trip to Bangkok. It is a very long trip, so the most comfortable option is to get a bed on a night train. I was very pleasantly surprised at the level of comfort provided by the Thai night trains. The beds have a good size, a little curtain for privacy, and an employee will install clean bed sheets on each bed when it’s time to sleep.

There are various timings for the train, you can choose the one that suits you best.

Bangkok, Thailand

How to summarize Bangkok? Sprawling and lively metropolis, with a fascinating mix of mess and modernity, busyness and peacefulness. You will be amazed at some of the biggest jams you have seen in your life, from the elevated foot bridges. Another famous feature of Thai cities is the incredible mishmash of electric cables along the roads.

You will find here good options for shopping with modern shopping malls like Central World or the famous and massive MBK Center. Closer to the Chao Phraya River, you will find a more historial Bangkok, with all the must-see monuments – Wat Pho, Grand Palace… or the Wat Arun on the other side of the river.

Thailand - Bangkok

More towards the north, in the Mo Chit area, take a few hours to stroll in the amazing Chatuchak Market. You will find there any item you can think of, but you will have to brave the crowds!

A little like for Singapore, I would say that 3-4 days is good to have a first introduction to Bangkok and its main places of interest. But you can easily stay for a week without being bored, if you like exploring less obvious places.

Last Thoughts About This Itinerary

This itinerary is very easy to do from either Singapore or Bangkok. Here, an open jaw plane ticket totally makes sense because of the geography of the region and the shape of the itinerary, and opting for a loop would force you to buy an extra one-way ticket back to Singapore – waste of time and money!

Of course, inevitably, many things get missed along the way. But unless you have months ahead of you, as for any itinerary, you have to make choices! The itinerary is well balanced between major cities, beach/islands time and cultural discoveries.

Although it might feel a little rushed, the itinerary is doable in 3 weeks, but it is more comfortable to plan it over a month (following the durations given on this page, between 21 and 26 days).

That’s a very cool itinerary. I did part of it, starting from Singapore to Malacca many years ago – that was my first taste of Asia. Recently I did KL to Penang. I still want to explore a bit more of Malaysia. It’s such an underrated country, but it has sooo much to offer.

Thanks for your comment! I agree, I have been 3 times to Malaysia – it is full of incredible places!

This is a gorgeous itinerary. I’ve been to a few of these spots on individual trips but to put it all together would be marvellous (one day in the child-has-grown-up future I will have time to do it!). Just went to Singapore again recently after not being there for many years and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it, too.

You should definitely go for the whole trip one day, it’s a wonderful adventure. Singapore looks a little artificial at first glance but has a lot to offer!

Some friends of ours recently returned from a few days in Singapore and raved about it, so we’ve been thinking about a trip to the area too. But we’re slow travellers who like to get the best value for money from our air fares so this extended itinerary has a lot more appeal, as does seeing a variety of attractions and destinations, so we’d probably take the whole four weeks. Thanx for the tips!

If you have the time, go for it! It’s true that Singapore and the region deserve much more than a few days, it’s when you go beyond scratching the surface that it gets interesting

Oh wow! I love this. I’ve been to most of the places you suggested in your itinerary. I also love how you included transport option for each! What a huge time saver. Will definitely be bookmarking this to recommend to others.

Thanks Anna, happy that you find it useful. It’s a really cool one-month adventure that I recommend to anyone!

Very well planned itinerary… the kind that comes with lot of experience and planning. And yes I do agree with you that Singapore is not a bunch of skyscrapers.

Thank you, luckily this part of the world is fairly easy to travel in, so you can cross the whole peninsula in only one month. As for Singapore, it just has so much to offer, it’s totally worth staying for a few days or a week and dive into its culture.

Now this is one awesome itinerary, I’ve spent ages on this post as I’ve done quite a lot of the stops you have, although I’ve reached them by ship or plane, I think your way is so much better, you’d get a much cooler feel for each region by bus. Great memories of many of these wonderful Asian stops.

Thank you Anna! A beautiful region to explore indeed 🙂

You’ve just described my perfect itinerary that I had been planning in my head. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Singapore and Malaysia that I’ve been planning this trip even without a flight book. Will have to bookmark this for when I finally head over!

Thanks for your comment! Singapore and Malaysia are awesome, lots of nature and history to discover.

What a nicely detailed itinerary! We’ve never been to Malaysia, Singapore, or Thailand, so this post of yours comes in handy. Although, 3-4 days in Bangkok would probably be too much for us, since we prefer going to quiet places and small villages in the mountains. But we’ll pin this for inspiration when we start planning our trip.

Thank you for your comment, I’m happy that this itinerary inspires you, and of course it is always possible (and recommended!) to adapt it to your own wishes

Brilliantly laid out itinerary. I love the way you have shared the various options even within the places to visit. That makes it easy to customize as per your needs. I have been to a few of these places but not all. So, shall be using your suggestions for the rest.

Thank you Ami, glad my suggestions are useful to you 🙂

This is a great guide. I so appreciate itineraries like this because even if not used exactly, they’re such great starting points for planning a trip. I’d actually really love to do the Singapore-Malaysia part of this trip, as I haven’t been before. Malaysia, in particular, has such a range of things to see and do and I love the mix of Asian and European influences on the culture and cuisine.

Thank you Jackie, indeed this itinerary is primarily for inspiration and should be adapted to everyone’s wishes! Malaysia is a great choice, there is so much to discover!

Hi Julien – my husband and I are in our 50s and are going to follow your Itinerary for Singapore Malaysia’s Thailand. We only have 21 days and we would like to travel during the day by train to Bangkok as opposed to over night. Do you think we could manage your itinerary for 21 days or should we miss out one of the places ( I love the look of it all though). We are fit but not like backpacking fit! Look forward to your ideas. We are travelling to Singapore in December from New Zealand. Thank you for your help. Kind regards Bridget.

Singapore to Bangkok: Southeast Asia's best train journey?

Simon Richmond

Grand colonial-era stations and lush tropical countryside are among the attractions of the 1800km rail journey from Singapore to Bangkok  – arguably one of the best train journeys in Southeast Asia . The downside? The only direct service between the two is the luxury Eastern and Oriental Express, costing $5000 for a two-night package.

But, by changing trains and spending a night either in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur or the charming mid-Peninsular town of Ipoh , it is possible to complete this classic trip for as little as US$67. Here's how to do it yourself.

The ETS train waiting at the onion-domed Old Kuala Lumpur Station

Stage 1: Singapore to Johor Bahru

When Singapore split from Malaysia in 1965 the latter's national railway, KTMB , retained control of the corridor of land on which the tracks ran over the Causeway from Johor Bahru to the Singapore terminus at Tanjong Pagar. In 2010, the neighbouring countries agreed a land swap deal that saw the Singapore terminus shift to Woodlands in the north of the island.

Singapore's old Tanjong Pagar Station, protected as a national monument, is an elegant 1932 building sporting a striking design by Serbian architect D S Petrovitch with both art deco and neoclassical flourishes. The site is currently being redeveloped as Cantonment MRT station on the new Circle Line, set to open in 2025. Over the construction site barriers you can glimpse the heroic relief sculptures on the station facade representing agriculture, industry, commerce and transport

Functional Woodland Train Checkpoint (also known as Woodlands CIQ) hardly compares, so the banning of photography here is no great disappointment. It's just SING$5 for the five-minute shuttle over the 1.5km Causeway to Johor Bahru. Avoid travelling on the weekend and you should breeze through immigration and customs checks at Woodlands. The KTMB shuttle appears quaintly old-fashioned and a bit scruffy after Singapore's modern MRT trains. However, the staff are friendly and delighted to pose for photos.

A monk looks out of the window on a train in Thailand rolling past green countryside

Stage 2: Johor Bharu to Kuala Lumpur

Singapore can be pricey, so cheaper Johor Bahru makes an ideal base for the first night of this journey if you're on a budget. Book into the Replacement Lodge & Kitchen , housed in one of the historic shophouses that have been spruced up around Jln Dhoby. This will also give you a chance to sample Johor Bahru's great selection of street food or peruse the trendy cafes in the heritage district .

Johor Bahru's old art deco 1930s train station (signposted as a museum, but in reality closed) stands in the hulking shadow of Johor Bahru Sentral, opened in 2010 as part of Malaysia's ongoing programme of upgrading its railway infrastructure. Electrification of the line has yet to reach Johor Bahru, so for the first 192km to Gemas you will be riding on some of the oldest rolling stock on the KTMB system. Bring plenty of warm clothing as the air-conditioning on this and the subsequent modern ETS trains up the peninsula is set to Arctic temperatures.

The 9.15am to Gemas arrives at 1.30pm, allowing sufficient time to stretch your legs in this small junction town and grab lunch before boarding the 3.10pm ETS service to Kuala Lumpur (arriving at 5.34pm). This service also continues onto Ipoh (arriving 20.17pm) should you choose to overnight there instead. Monotonous views of palm oil plantations predominate along this section of the journey. However, there are some attractive jungle-clad hills around Seremban, 70km southeast of Kuala Lumpur.

Stage 3: Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar

Kuala Lumpur Sentral is the city's hub for public transport, but all long distance ETS trains north still pause at Old Kuala Lumpur Station . This fantastic piece of 1910 architecture was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback and sports Mughal and Moorish features such as keyhole arches and wind towers – it's worth boarding the next stage of the journey here just to see the building close up. Should you be spending the night in Kuala Lumpur, the colonial stylings of the Majestic Hotel across the road are worth the splurge.

Malaysia's spiffy ETS trains offer a decent buffet car serving snacks and drinks. There are also screens in each of the carriages showing movies, such as Minions , on loop (thankfully, with subtitles rather than full volume). The landscape north to the border offers more variety including dramatic limestone peaks and verdant paddy fields. At Ipoh there's another grand Hubback-designed train station to admire, dating back to 1917. Like the one in Kuala Lumpur it used to house a hotel, but this one has more of a European style with loggias and a porte-cochére (covered porch for vehicles), in front of which is an attractive park.

Bangkok's Hualamphong Train Station alive with traders and travellers

Stage 4: Night Train to Bangkok

From Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar is just under six hours by train: if you catch the 7am service you could break in Ipoh and have three hours to explore its old town, where there’s some inventive pieces of street art and a wonderful range of culinary specialities such as chicken with bean sprouts and soya bean curd. Warning: don’t linger too long before continuing to the border, because you need to arrive at Padang Besar by 4pm to go through immigration and catch the night train to Bangkok

Thailand is one hour behind, so the daily 5pm Thai train leaves Padang Besar's Malaysia station at 6pm. Tickets can usually be purchased at Padang Besar (or book online ): opt for the lower bunks, which are wider. The two sleeper carriages, which have a retro charm, are hauled to Hat Yai just under an hour away where they are coupled to a service headed to Bangkok. There's a restaurant car from then on, but attendants will also serve you in your carriage and plenty of other food vendors hop on the train at stations along the way.

As you awake next morning the train should be chugging by the coastal resort of Hua Hin. A few hours later – most likely behind schedule – Thailand's sprawling capital is within sight. Pulling into the city you'll slowly pass the shell of Bangkok's new Bang Sue terminal, which is under construction. When completed it will replace the impressive Neo-Renaissance terminus of Hualamphong – the giant arched shed of this old station, dating to 1916, spectacularly signals the end of the journey.

Before leaving, visit the small Thailand Railway Museum at the Rama 4 Rd entrance to the station, which includes a mock-up of a luxury coach interior in which to snap a selfie – who says the romance of rail travel is dead?

Driving has always been one of my favourite ways to explore a country as it offers so much more fun, insights and excitement. The freedom to stop anywhere you want, the experience of traversing from town to town to interact with the locals, and the opportunity to detour on uncharted roads to discover new things, all make road trips most exciting and rewarding.

My first road trip was in the U.S., driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco, stopping at Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Santa Cruz. I have also done other road trips in Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan. While there are many beautiful places like the Swiss Alps and Great Ocean Road with windy roads seemingly drawn by God with road trips in mind, South East Asia has in fact plenty to offer for road trip lovers as well. And the potential of driving from home to explore this region has impelled me to take my little car up north beyond the Boleh land.

Having a good friend who is a Thailand guru and has driven on countless occasions from Singapore into Thailand, Cambodia and China, following him was perhaps the best way to start. Planning was easy with our sense of adventure and flexibility. Soon, we were meeting at Gelang Patah for early breakfast before embarking on an exciting 11-day journey into the Kingdom of Thailand, each behind our own wheels.

Map of our 11-day road trip, including 3 days in Bangkok:

Day 1 - Singapore to Hatyai

Day 2 - Hatyai to Hua Hin

Day 3 - Hua Hin to Chiang Mai

Day 4 - Chiang Mai to Pai

Day 5 - Pai to Doi Angkhang to Tha Ton

Day 6 - Tha Ton to Mae Salong to Mae Sai to Phrae

Day 7 - Phrae to Bangkok

Day 8 & 9 - Bangkok

Day 10 - Bangkok to Hatyai

Day 11 - Hatyai to Singapore

The first 800-plus kilometres crossing Peninsula Malaysia was pretty much a humdrum and uneventful journey. Our minds were all set on the Land of Smiles while we floored the pedal and tore up the North-South highway. The only worthy stop was Ipoh - a perfect lunch stop to feast on some steamy Hong Kong tim sum. By sunset, we had crossed Sadao, the immigration point of Thailand, and were approaching Hatyai, eagerly looking forward to our dinner and a good foot massage.

The trip had literally covered from the south to the northern most edge of Thailand, but had concentrated mainly on the northern districts of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Pai. The breathtaking mountains offered mesmerizing views as we steered along the cliff-edge roads that meandered from town to town. The quaint and bohemian town of Pai tucked in the mountains, surrounded by paddy fields and a river, is a perfect retreat for city dwellers. The Akha hill tribe village in Mae Salong offered a place to rest our feet while enjoying a cup of hot and fragrant local oolong tea amidst the cool weather. Of course, no trip to Thailand would be complete without a stop in Bangkok, where we spent 3 days for a doze of civilization, Thai massage and street food indulgence.

While we had enjoyed every bit of the stops we had made, the most fulfilling part for me was none other than the journey itself and the fact that I have made my way there and back, all in my little car. However, it was not a drive in the park or a road trip for the faint-hearted. It was definitely not for typical Singaporeans who pamper their beloved cars to spas more than their wives do.

If you think that the roads in Malaysia are bad, try Thailand. Despite the awesome scenery along the way, especially in the north, some roads were seemingly showered by meteorites once upon a time. I guess the roads were made worse by the epic flood that had just receded. The amount of steering I had to do to avoid potholes that littered for hundreds of kilometres was phenomenal. On several occasions, heavy downpours with a one car-length visibility in the night had made driving nerve-racking. They had all required an enormous amount of driving concentration and effort, probably the most I have experienced so far. It was of such intensity especially when compared to the one-hand cruising we are used to doing in Singapore at times.

Fortunately, we had both bought, brought and drove the right cars along. The agility and robustness of my MINI was put to the test in this harsh and real-life environment. Its nimble steering, rigid chassis and a healthy boost of torque from the turbocharger had zipped us across towns and scaled mountains, avoiding potholes and animals, all with confidence. While much physical hard work was needed behind the wheel in the MINI, the leading BMW X3 was in a totally different world. Its high profile tires and vehicle clearance had a huge advantage over challenging road surfaces. Its SAV chassis offers the best of both worlds from highway speed to off-road capability. And with its intelligent all-wheel drive system, the xDrive, every hairpin was a piece of cake, rain or shine.

For 11 days, my perspective through the windscreen was mostly terminated by the distinguishable Singapore registered BMW, except when it had simply bashed through the pothole littered roads while I was swerving like in a Hollywood car chase scene. I had to work so hard in my MINI and could only hear the clatter of metal, rattle of gravel, all symphonized with the distinctive tune from the hardworking engine compartment. In contrast, I wondered what mesmeric Thai music my friend was enjoying in his acoustically cocooned Bimmer as he saw the Singapore registered MINI had disappeared in his rear view mirror for a few hours. The popular Thai song Sabai Sabai was probably in his iPod – relax, all is well.

Thailand or Singapore: Which Asian Country To Visit?

Thailand or Singapore

If you’re stuck deciding between Thailand or Singapore for your next adventure abroad, then you’ve certainly got a whole lot to think about. Both of these Southeast Asian countries are mainstays on the backpacker trail, but their cultures and landscapes are strikingly divergent, and whichever you choose promises a very different experience.

Singapore is a tropical island nation off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. A city, country, and state all in one, it’s famed as a big-business, banking hub with plenty of style and class. At the same time, Thailand is a rustic backpacking haven and one of the jewels of Southeast Asian budget travel. Beaches, parties, and scenery are just some of the reasons millions of travelers flock to the shores and jungled hills of the Land of Smiles each year.

This guide will peer deep to see what it is that makes Thailand and Singapore unique. It will outline the differences in food, climate, customs, and more, all to help you pick the place that’s right for you and your travel crew in the coming seasons. Let’s get started…

Table of Contents

Thailand vs Singapore: Ease of travel

Changi Airport

Thailand and Singapore are only two hours apart by plane, so the process of getting to either country shouldn’t be too different. However, Singapore’s Changi airport is a popular layover destination from most western international airports to Thailand. So wherever you’re coming from, you’ll be more likely to find a direct flight to Singapore than the Land of Smiles.

When we talk about traveling, it’s easy to get carried away with the end goal, but it’s just as much about the journey as the destination. If you’re not convinced, you’ve clearly never been to Singapore airport. With gardens, innovative services, retail, dining, and the world’s largest indoor waterfall, you’ll be endlessly entertained. There’s even a swimming pool at Changi Airport, and there’s genuinely nowhere like it in the world.

Although Singapore won’t give you a taste of authentic Southeast Asian travel like Thailand, being over 700 times smaller than the Land of Smiles, getting around will be just as exciting. Singapore is famed for its Mass Rapid Transit subway system, which is as impressive as it sounds. The underground network stretches across the entirety of the city. Still, with clean air and magnificent greenery among the modern cityscapes, walking in Singapore is as much of a joy.

Thailand’s travel is defined by its rustic buses and ferries, which are an experience in themselves, but nothing compared to the modern luxuries of Singapore’s transport systems. Bangkok International Airport is impressive, but the polluted city makes walking and taking tuk-tuks largely unpleasant.

Getting around by scooter is popular in the southern isles of Thailand and is a great way to see the country at your own pace. But scooter culture is not unique to Thailand, and you can experience this anywhere in southeast Asia. Compared to Singapore’s convenient, sustainable, and affordable railway, deemed the best-in-class public transport in Asia, how can Thailand beat that?

Winner: Singapore

Thailand vs Singapore: Beaches

Maya Bay

Although Singapore might be better known for its magnificent skylines, modern appeal, and efficient transport, the beaches are certainly something to talk about. Although most of them are artificial, the white sands and towering palms are usually enough to fill a few days with no-holes-barred relaxation.

Formed at the edges of reclaimed land, the East Coast Park Beach is the longest stretch of sand on the island and is a treasured urban beach getaway. Palawan Beach, meanwhile, takes its name from the picturesque region of the Philippines and is the best swimming beach in Singapore. Then there’s Sentosa. This is a whole island resort complex and it’s home to the cleanest beaches in the territory. You’ll need to pay for access but they are very well maintained. The only downside is that they aren’t natural. All of the sands on Sentosa are manmade.

Singapore is all about entertainment. Although the beaches lack a certain rustic charm of Thailand’s untouched island paradises, no pebble has been left unturned when it comes to keeping visitors busy. Palawan Beach boasts a pirate-themed water park, Cabana-style beach bars, restaurants, and shops, and all this is just minutes away from the city.

Even so, there’s no doubt in our mind that Thailand wins this category. Visions of white-sand coves, palm-threaded islands, and paradise coves abound in the Land of Smiles. It’s hard not to be impressed by the sheer diversity of the coastline that’s on the menu. It’s hard to know where to begin, but here goes…

Many will be drawn to Maya Bay in Koh Phi Phi . It was used as the set for Danny Boyle’s 2000 blockbuster The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio. That sits right next to the amazing beaches of the rugged Andaman region, which is known for its big karst cliffs. Islands like Koh Mook, Koh Lanta, and Koh Jum beckon there, as do coves in Railay and Tonsai. Over in eastern Thailand, you get even more famous isles in the form of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, which have white-sand beaches 10 to the penny – Haad Salad (on Koh Phangan) and Mae Nam (on Samui) are two of our favorites.

Winner: Thailand. There’s simply no doubt about that.

Thailand vs Singapore: Food

Thailand street food

Food plays a massive role in the cultural traditions of both Thailand and Singapore. With strong oriental influences, the cuisines are aromatic and hearty, and local customs are centered around feeding and sharing in both nations.

Thailand and Singapore are alike in that they’re both known for their seafood. Still, Singapore’s gastronomy is more unique, inspired by surrounding nations but with a Singaporean spin on every dish. Some quintessential meals include chili crab, black pepper crab, sambal stingray, and steamed fish. Their local chicken rice from the Hainan province is also a popular staple, bursting with flavor and steamed with thick soy sauce.

While Singapore and Thailand share a street food culture, Singapore’s cuisine is defined by Hawker culture, a practice where people from all walks of life gather at Hawker centers, or community dining rooms, to eat, share, and bond over food. They remain integral in most Singaporeans’ way of life. Although comparable to Thailand’s night bazaars and street food restaurants, Hawker culture has adapted to Singapore’s modern demographic and shows no signs of dying out.

Thai gastronomy needs no introduction and is one of the most globalized cuisines in the world. Although local Thai food varies by region and sees a heavy focus on seafood, you would likely have tried the staples of Pad Thai and Green Curry well before ever venturing to the Land of the Smiles. Fragrant, mild, and infused with Thai basil, the food is less spicy than other Asian cuisines but beloved worldwide. Eating out is an equally social affair in Thailand, but the rustic street food traditions define the culture.

Still, the variety and originality in Singaporean cuisine, with its untainted customs unfamiliar to the rest of Asia, make a journey through the local dishes much more exciting for a Western visitor.

Thailand vs Singapore: Things to Do

Singapore city

No matter which country you visit, you won’t be bored. There is variety around every turn in Thailand. Each corner of the country promises something different, and it’s a nation where adventure and culture intermingle no matter where you go.

Despite Singapore’s smaller size, it’s an entertainment hub, and the island has been built from the ground up to appeal to the masses. Singapore will never fail to impress with its modern technological advancements and spectacular architecture.

From the SuperTree Grove Light Show , the Helix Bridge , and the Cloud Forest to the Botanical Gardens and Har Par Villa , Singapore’s attractions are all about man-made spectacle. A journey through Singapore is a lesson in how far technology has come and what this has meant for the nation.

On the other hand, Thailand’s rich history and religious culture are often at the heart of the things to do. The ancient temples are a huge pull factor, and the majestic statues of Buddha all over the country are more spectacular than any modern feet of engineering. But Thailand is also about thrill-seeking. From zip wires and quad-biking to jungle trekking and shooting ranges, the most popular attractions make the most of the vast landscape and appeal to the adventurous backpacker in all of us.

Although Thailand has much more variety, Singapore is like nowhere else in the world, and the skyline is just as much of a bucket list vision as Thailand’s temples.

Winner: Draw

Thailand or Singapore: Towns and cities

Downtown Singapore

Thailand has stacks of intriguing towns and cities. They vary a lot in character from north to south, as you move between different regional cultures and peoples. Naturally, Bangkok is the place to begin. We think it’s one of the most enthralling cities in the world, let alone just Asia. You can spend whole weeks exploring, but most will make do with a few days, partying on Khaosan Road, shopping in Sukhumvit, and wondering at the priceless treasures of the Grand Palace (the official home of the Thai King).

Chiang Mai is also special. That’s the second city of Thailand. It’s located far in the north on the cusp of the mountains. The Old Town areas there is a showcasing of traditional Lanna architecture built from wood, interspersed now and then with golden temples. Close by is the highland station of Pai, which we’d recommend for chill-out time and trekking.

Singapore, for its part, is one big city. However, you can break it down into various neighborhoods, each of which have their own unique feel. Chinatown is probably the most famous of the ethnic districts. It’s one of the largest of its kind in the world. Delve in and you can hop between dim sum dumpling houses and Canton noodle houses.

We also think all first-time visitors to Singapore should pay a visit to Little India. It channels the frantic atmosphere of Mumbai or Delhi with its spice-scented curry houses (we ate the best curry we’ve ever had outside of India here). Then there’s Marina Bay, which is the area to go for your compulsory selfie below the famous Singapore skyscraper hotels.

Winner: Draw. Thailand has more varied towns and cities but Singapore IS a city with oodles of amazing neighborhoods.

Thailand vs Singapore: Price

Temple in Thailand

When it comes to economics, Singapore and Thailand are extremely different. Let’s look at some basic states: The GDP per capita in Singapore is around $62,400. In Thailand, it sits at just $9,900. Average wages in the Land of Smiles sit at about 14,000 THB (just over $430 USD) per month. In Singapore, they are more to the tune of $4,000 per month.

Still predominantly an agricultural economy, Thailand relies on crops and tourism and remains underdeveloped for the most part, even despite the modern capital in Bangkok. Singapore, meanwhile, has soaring skyscrapers and developed suburbs from the moment you cross the border to the moment you step into stylish Marina Bay. It’s a hub for glitzy shopping malls and big businesses. All that has a knock-on effect on the prices…

A budget meal in Thailand’s capital will set you back less than $3 on average, compared to $14 in Singapore. At the same time, a trip to the mid-range restaurant should cost less than $20 per person in Thailand, but closer to $40 in Singapore. Rent can cost over three times as much in Singapore, with endless facilities and first-world luxuries on the menu in some condos. And while an apartment in Bangkok could cost just $6,000 per square meter to purchase, you’d need closer to $25,000 for the same space in Singapore!

Winner: Thailand will be A LOT cheaper to travel than Singapore. It’s definitely the pick for budget travelers here.

Thailand or Singapore: The general vibe

Thai people

Truth is, Thailand and Singapore are very different places. In fact, they are so different that they aren’t really comparable. One – Thailand – is a whole nation with various towns and cities, beach-fringed islets, and cloud-shattering mountain ranges. The other – Singapore – is really just a city on its own, though it’s officially recognized around the world as an independent state.

That has implications for the would-be traveler. For one, you could spend weeks and weeks exploring Thailand and still not get to see everything that the country has to offer. A comprehensive travel itinerary here would include the misty mountain towns on the Burmese border, the bazaars of Chiang Mai, a few days in Bangkok, and then endless explorations through the islands of the south.

Meanwhile, Singapore’s main draws and attractions can all be seen in less than a week. Hit the famous Marina Bay to take your selfies, head to Singapore Zoo for encounters with white tigers, and then cross to Sentosa for a relaxing day on the beach, all before a meal in Chinatown or Little India. You’ll only want to stay longer if you’re a dedicated slow traveler and love getting into the rhythm of urban life.

We should also mention that Singapore is probably just a touch less welcoming to the first-time traveler than Thailand. Hey, it’s called the Land of Smiles for a reason, folks! People in Thailand are generally extremely welcoming, almost always happy, and very used to tourism. That’s not really the case in Singapore, where it’s all a bit more business-like in proceedings.

Winner: Thailand for real adventures and good vibes.

Thailand or Singapore – The Verdict

Our guide puts Thailand and Singapore neck and neck. Still, it’s only their vast differences that create this outcome. Thailand might win on the beachfront , but Singapore’s dazzling cityscapes are not to miss. Singapore’s food culture might be more unique, but Pad Thai is famous worldwide for a good reason. Whichever you choose, you won’t be disappointed, and you certainly won’t be stumped for things to keep you busy.

If it’s an authentic taste of traveling you’re after, there’s nowhere in the world that can compete with Thailand. But for a futuristic city break, a few days in Singapore promises plentiful once-in-a-lifetime experiences. So which will it be?

Angkor Wat: A Wonder of the World: Begin your journey at Angkor Wat, one of the 8 Wonders of the World and an astonishing testament to Khmer craftsmanship and devotion. This vast complex, with its temples, pagodas, statues, and palaces, was constructed exclusively for religious purposes. These grand structures are a tribute to King Suryavarman II during the height of the Khmer Empire. The site is so extensive that it typically takes three days to explore fully, with Angkor Wat as your first and primary gateway to the wonders of the Angkor civilization.

Angkor Thom: Fortress of the Past: Angkor Thom presents a stark contrast to the other religious sites with its fortress-like appearance. Surrounded by an extensive moat, it seems more like a stronghold than a temple. You can enter from any of its five gates, one for each cardinal direction - north, south, east, and west. The fifth gate, the Victory Gate, faces east from the Angkor Thom Royal Palace grounds. Each entrance was originally connected by a causeway, but only the south gate remains partially submerged today.

Ta Prohm: The Mysterious Ruins: Venture west within the Angkor Wat Complex to find Ta Prohm, where colossal stones blend seamlessly with towering trees. Built as part of King Jayavarman VII's initiative to construct monasteries and universities, Ta Prohm is famous for its enigmatic ambiance and was even featured in the movie "Tomb Raider." The afternoon is an ideal time to visit, as the immense trees provide welcome shade.

Bayon Temple: Faces in Stone: King Jayavarman VII's legacy lives on in Bayon Temple, constructed in the late 12th to early 13th century. Often referred to as the temple of stone faces, Bayon appears mountain-like from a distance, but the stone visages come into focus as you draw near.

Angkor Thom South Gate: A Glimpse of History: Among the five gateways to Angkor Thom, the south gate stands as the most immaculately preserved. The 54 exquisite stone figures that line each side of the causeway are a sight to behold.

Vespa Tour in Siem Reap Countryside: Experience Siem Reap from a whole new perspective! Begin your day by meeting your friendly Vespa driver. You'll embark on a ride to the tour office, where you'll receive a briefing about today's exciting adventure. Then, hop on a vintage Vespa and set off into the rural heart of Siem Reap. Along the way, you'll visit a local family, explore hidden pagodas, peruse local markets, and engage with welcoming villagers and monks. A simple, delicious lunch is included to refuel you for your journey. The tour concludes in the afternoon, and you'll be transported back to your hotel.

Dress appropriately for temple and pagoda visits. Ladies, it's recommended to avoid mini-skirts or long dresses for comfort and safety during the ride. For your safety, passengers are not allowed to drive the Vespa. Capture the memories - photos will be taken with you seated on the Vespa and sent to you via email. Please be aware that some sites and activities may be subject to change without prior notice due to circumstances beyond our control. Phare the Cambodian Circus: A Show Beyond Imagination

Phare, the Cambodian Circus: Prepare to be captivated by a show that goes far beyond your typical circus. Phare immerses you in the heart of Cambodian traditions, folk tales, religious beliefs, and popular culture, all within a modern and high-energy performance. This exceptional form of storytelling offers a unique window into Cambodian culture and daily life through a mesmerizing fusion of art forms. It's an experience you won't want to miss.

Experience Bangkok's Vibrant Nightlife: Start your evening with a thrilling tuk-tuk ride from your hotel to Chinatown, just as the sun dips below the horizon. As the night comes alive, you'll be immersed in the luminous spectacle of Yaowarat Road and the enchanting Odeon Circle. Beyond the bustling main road, winding alleys reveal how the Chinese community has upheld its cultural heritage for centuries.
