TOEI KYOTO STUDIO PARK: Best Attractions & How to Get There

TOEI KYOTO STUDIO PARK: Best Attractions & How to Get There

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Bang! I didn’t realize just how much of my early years had been taken over by the Japanese until I was standing in the middle of the movie park.

I may be a foreigner here, but everything around me looked and sounded mighty familiar. There’s a ninja statue clinging on to the wall in one corner, an anime robot in another, and two samurai warriors fighting in a make-believe Edo town. All that was missing was a hentai screening, and the characters of my puberty would have been complete. Tee-hee.

It didn’t start as energetic and lively as this. It was a glum morning. Not only was the sun missing, the rain was shoving its buzzkill self into Kyoto that day. Even before I could find the theme park, the clouds were already pissing on me every two minutes. It didn’t help that the destination was a bit difficult to find. There were no signs on the way, and it was in a residential maze.

After thirty minutes and ten run-for-cover stops, I finally spotted the inconspicuous entrance to the park. There was no queue. I sashayed my way into the park, no problem. Inside I found myself awfully alone in an old Japanese town set.  Where is everyone? Having a place to yourself is nice if that place is a beach or a shop, but a theme park?  Where the EFF is everyone? There was only this geisha flashing a vestal smile at me. Creepy. Seriously, girl; not now, not when I was starting to think I was in a ghost town.

toei animation studio tour

All of a sudden, a big crowd came flooding out of the theater behind me! There’s everyone!  Apparently, they were all inside enjoying a ninja show. Now this is the theme park I’m talking about! Let the fun begin!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

About Toei Kyoto Studio Park

The Toei Kyoto Studio Park   (東映太秦映画村, Tōei Uzumasa Eigamura, or more simply Movie Land ) is actually a film set that has been made open to the public. It is the only theme park in Japan where visitors can watch and observe actual filming of period dramas (jidaigeki films). More than 200 movies are shot here every year! But it is more than a movie set. It has already been transformed into an amusement park featuring an anime museum, a ninja maze, and a maddeningly effective haunted house, among others. Visitors may also choose to rent a full Edo period costume and dress up as a samurai or a geisha so they could explore the park in style!

Toei Kyoto Studio Park Map. Tap the pic above to enlarge

One of the most fascinating sections of the park is Edo Town, an entire block made up of old, traditional houses and shops built to foster a very convincing Edo Period vibe. Make a turn onto this part, and you’ll be lost in Ancient Japan! There’s a full replica of the Nihonbashi Bridge, the most recognizable landmark in the busiest mercantile district of old Tokyo, and the Yoshiwara red-light district. “Wanted” posters are everywhere, and samurais appear in the area showcasing their mastery of the katana.

West of the town is the Meiji Period Police Office, in front of which I watched two warriors give some Samurai fighting lessons and teach lucky guests some of their killer moves!

Edo Town

Haunted House

The Japanese know how to deliver a scare, a fact that I was afraid to be proven right as I plodded toward its direction. It didn’t help that we had to sign a waiver or some sort, and was reminded OVER AND OVER AGAIN that there would be NO TURNING BACK if we made it past the front door.

Trust me. It was the BEST — no, the WORST — haunted house you’ll have the crazy pleasure to experience. Spine-tingling props fill the room and hair-raising sound effects send the creeps. I knew what I was getting into, but each step I took was heavy and reluctant. As hard as I tried to not freak out, I could not help but scream with every bloody body and decapitated head that suddenly blocked my way. And the actors inside! THE ACTORS INSIDE!!!!!!

Photography is prohibited inside for obvious reasons. (I could’ve smashed the actors with my camera had I carried it with me!)  There was an extra charge. It was as if I paid them to scare the living schnitzel out of me. It was amazing. Terrifying but amazing. Upon emerging from it, I wanted to do it again!

Nakamuraza Theater

At the dead center of the park is the Nakamuraza Theater, where they stage a variety of free shows. The one I saw was an action-comedy live ninja show. The problem was that it was in Japanese, but it was so action-packed it didn’t really matter. I just assumed the comedy part because everyone else was laughing so hard at many points during the program.

Nakamuraza Theater

Ninja Mystery House

Speaking of ninja, another interesting attraction is the Ninja Mystery House. You go inside and you have to find your way out. “Learn about some of the inner workings of this mysterious building,” the park invites, “then it is up to you to escape.” There are revolving doors, secret passages, and other traps to make exiting quite a challenge. I decided to skip this one because there was an additional charge again.

Ninjaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

Toei Anime Museum

Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, One Piece. Just a few of the many anime on display inside the museum. “Here on display are original pictures, animation cells, promotional goods and more, from some of Toei’s classic pictures as well as new productions,” their website brags. It is pretty cozy, but it is nostalgia galore for those who had developed a lifelong bond with these characters! I was stoked!

Shocked?

Super Hero Land

I spent most of my time here looking for any member of Bioman. I found Red One in company of other red rangers from other super sentai series. And wow! There were 23 of them! I also spotted Masked Rider Black and Maskman! There were also mecha and kaiju gathered in their own corners.

Red One!

It wasn’t a perfect day. The rain poured every now and then, taunting everyone and pushing them to run for cover each time. I also didn’t see the rest of Bioman and I was really looking forward to meeting all of them. (Especially Blue Three . I was always Blue Three.) It was also cut short because my flight back to Manila was scheduled later that day. But it was the highest peak of my visit to Kyoto. Perhaps because I’m a sucker for anything that reminds me of childhood. Perhaps because I had always felt my youth slip away, and it was nice to be reminded of it. Perhaps because it was just darn fun. Who cares why? All I am sure of is, it felt good that my Kyoto trip ended not just on a high note but with the proverbial — what do they call it? — bang.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park Opening Hours: 9:30am – 4:30pm Entrance Fee: JPY 2200 For more info on ticket prices and operating hours, visit this page . How to get to Kyoto Movie Park : From Kyoto Station, take the Sagano Line train to Uzumasa Station. From the exit, walk straight ahead until you hit the end of the street and turn right. Toei Animation Releases A Recap Video For One Pieces 25th Anniversary

  • Toei Animation celebrates One Piece anime's 25th anniversary with a nostalgic recap video showcasing key story arcs and moments.
  • The Wano Country Saga takes center stage in the recap video, leading into the final act of the saga and the Egghead Arc of the Final Saga.
  • One Piece's 25th anniversary brings various events, including a 24x7 streaming of the anime, a World Tournament for the Card Game, and a special Las Vegas Sphere debut.

Having premiered back in 1999, Toei Animation's adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece , has gone on to become the most successful anime franchise in the company's history, recently dethroning its predecessor Dragon Ball . Over the course of 25 years, the One Piece anime has followed the travels of the Straw Hat Pirates led by their Captain Monkey D. Luffy, as they set out to conquer the Grand Line and claim the Pirate King's fabled treasure.

To commemorate the One Piece anime's upcoming 25th anniversary in October 2024, Toei Animation has released a recap video on YouTube, which stitches together moments from every single canon story arc in the franchise, in a poignant trip down memory lane. Additionally, a host of other initiatives have also been planned to celebrate this momentous year in One Piece's history, paying tribute to a true titan of shonen anime.

Why The Best Is Yet To Come For The One Piece Anime In 2024

Here's why the ongoing Egghead Arc could be the moment when Toei Animation finally kicks things into high gear for the Final Saga.

Revisiting The Straw Hats' Entire Journey

At a duration of just under eight minutes, this recap video revisits a few critical moments and frames from the Straw Hat Pirates' journey through the East Blue, Paradise, and the New World. With over 1100 episodes and counting, One Piece's narrative is an epic in every sense of the word, and this goes double for Eiichiro Oda's detailed world building that has garnered a great deal of acclaim since the manga began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997.

Toei Animation's recap video shares some similarities with VIZ Media's ROAD OF NARUTO trailer for Naruto's 20th Anniversary in 2022, in terms of its structure and concept, albeit, without any redrawn animation. Starting out with visuals from the special version of One Piece's first opening "We Are" created for Episode 1000 of the anime, the video jumps right into the start of Luffy's journey in the East Blue.

Scenes from the Romance Dawn Arc, Orange Town Arc, Syrup Village Arc, Baratie Arc, and the Arlong Park Arc, rush into view as the soundtrack piece, "To The Grand Line" imbues a sense of nostalgia to these snippets from the Straw Hat Pirates' early days. Next, the stage shifts to their adventures in the Grand Line, with clips from their exploits in the Arabasta Saga and Skypiea Saga.

The following segment of the video spans through the Water 7 Saga, Thriller Bark Saga, Summit War Saga, Fish-Man Island Saga, Dressrosa Saga, and the Whole Cake Island Saga, before segueing into the early episodes of the Wano Country Saga , with the soundtrack piece "Going Merry Ship, Fly!" scoring these scenes.

Onward To The Final Saga

Starting with the Raid on Onigashima which forms the massive final act of the Wano Country Saga , the score in the backdrop immediately shifts to "Overtaken," a piece of music that is synonymous with Luffy and One Piece as a whole. Although it has cropped up on several occasions during critical battles in the series, its most iconic usage came from the march to Arlong Park, near the end of the opening East Blue Saga.

The Wano Country Saga was given a considerable amount of screen time when compared to some of the other story arcs in the series, due to its length and overall significance at this juncture in the franchise. After wrapping up the battle in Onigashima with the debut of Gear 5 and Luffy's defeat of Kaido, the scene shifts once again to Egghead, where the anime is now partway through the opening arc of the Final Saga. It is no exaggeration to say that One Piece is enjoying a considerable amount of the spotlight, since the end of Luffy's journey is now finally in sight, although there are still a few exciting things on the horizon to look forward to.

What's In Store For One Piece's 25th Anniversary?

As specified on the web page for the One Piece anime's 25th anniversary celebrations, there are a number of ongoing and upcoming events and announcements that will premiere throughout the course of the year, in honor of this occasion. For instance, one venture called "Anytime One Piece" has the One Piece anime streaming 24x7 on the official One Piece YouTube channel in Japan, since October 29th 2023, although the stream's availability is restricted to certain geographical regions at the moment.

March 2024 also saw the end of the inaugural World Tournament for the One Piece C ard Game, which was won by GuanRong, a Malaysian player, emerging triumphant as the first One Piece Card Game world champion. The One Piece Card Game has also released a special 25th Anniversary Edition Card Set , illustrating how many different initiatives have been planned across the franchise's many arms.

One Piece: Is Egghead The Best Post-Time Skip Arc So Far?

With the end of the Straw Hats' time on Egghead finally in sight, is it too soon to rank this segment among the best story arcs in the New World?

On the other side of the world from June 10-16, 2024, One Piece will also make its debut on the outer surface of the Las Vegas Sphere, known as the Exosphere, with a 90-second visual sequence created specially for this event. This week-long celebration of One Piece also includes a four-hour takeover party on Tuesday, June 11, with Kazuki Yao, the voice actor of Franky in attendance, alongside some of Toei Animation's executives .

This event will coincide with the soft launch of a new English YouTube channel for One Piece , which aims to expand the franchise's global reach to a wider audience. Finally, the ONE PIECE DAY '24 event has also been announced for August 10-11 at Makuhari Messe on the outskirts of Tokyo. There will also be a live stream for viewers who cannot attend the in-person event, with further details available on the official website .

A Milestone For Toei Animation's Most Lucrative Franchise

Cumulatively, the last few years have seen One Piece' s global appeal soar due to a number of factors, ranging from the epic conclusion of the Wano Country Arc and the start of the Final Saga in the manga and anime, to the acclaimed Netflix live-action adaptation. There has also been a lot of speculation surrounding the upcoming reboot of the anime by WIT Studio, titled The One Piece , which will give the series a contemporary update for a new era. At present, there is no better time to be a One Piece fan, and things will likely only get even more exciting from here on in.

One Piece is available to stream on Crunchyroll .
