BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HOTEL AND RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN TOURISM

A four-year course that aims to develop managers and qualified personnel for the tourism industry, focusing particularly on the travel management.

The program is designed to address the burgeoning travel industry in tourism and to support the country’s economic development.

A special feature of the program is its domestic and international Practicum where the students are required to undergo 400 hours of Internship in their senior year in any of the airline, travel companies and allied fields of their choice.

Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM)

The Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management is a 4-year degree program that prepares students to have a practical and managerial skills in hotel and restaurant operations, culinary, food service, and event planning; competencies at every academic year level such as food and beverage services (FBS), housekeeping (HSKG) and cookery (CKRY) for them to be competitive in the hospitality industry locally and globally. This aims to teach entrepreneurial skills, knowledge on how to conduct business and the process of conception of the different aspects of hotel, restaurant and resort operations. This curriculum also includes cooking laboratory experiences, tour as well as local or international internship opportunities in the industry and research that are essential in preparing the students to become adept future restaurateurs and hoteliers.

BS in Hospitality Management Major in Culinary Arts (BSHM-CA)

This is a 4-year degree program that involves comprehensive study of the basic and advanced skills needed for a career within the culinary world. It teaches about different aspects of being a cook and working in a kitchen and with the food. It includes keeping a sanitary kitchen, cooking basic recipes and making your dishes look as appetizing as possible on the plate.  In addition to honing their culinary skills, this course of study provides students a strong business foundation. Topics like finance, marketing, and sustainable business practices are often explored and put into practice.

Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Major in Cruise Line Services (BSHM-CLS)

Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management Major in Cruise Line Services (BSHM-CLS) is a 4-year degree program that provides foundation and specialization study in the Hotel Services field through academic, laboratory and field internship experiences. The Program provides the knowledge and skills necessary for the students to ensure efficiency and to prepare the students to work in the Cruise Line industry. The program is designed in two-depth areas in the Cruise Line Operations: operations and management, which is to prepare students for employment in a variety of hotel positions in the growing cruise line operations.

Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM)

Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management is a (4) four-year degree program that provides students a concrete view in the field of tourism. This program leads to expertise in management of tour-operating agencies, as well as other jobs in the travel, events and hotel sector. It aims to address the need for professionals who can help in promoting the tourism and hospitality industries in the Philippines. The curriculum is designed to develop skills in critical thinking, creative problem solving, research, intellectual curiosity, and operational competencies. The combination of theories learned inside the classroom, industry immersion and on-the-job training will prepare the students to be globally competitive in tourism management operations.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Maritime Administration and Leadership (BSBA-MAL)

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Maritime Administration and Leadership is a (4) four-year degree program that provides an integrated approach among the different functional areas of business and examine how effective orchestration of these different components of business operations that can lead to organizational success. The program includes the appreciation of the economic, social, technological as well as legal environments within which all businesses must operate, and possess the basic business knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to effectively lead an organization and achieve the desired results through instruction, research and community involvement for the holistic development of future business supervisors and administrators.

Two-Year and Three-Year Programs

Associate in hospitality management (ahm).

Two-year associate’s degree programs in hospitality management equip students with comprehensive knowledge of hospitality laws, hospitality operations and hiring practices. It also focuses on principles of food safety, hygiene and sanitation, food service and meal planning, housekeeping procedures, and exploring aspects in food preparation. The program includes an internship where students get instruction and apply their knowledge to real-life situations. The program also offers students competencies such as Food and Beverages Services and Housekeeping. Students gain strong verbal and written communication skills, both of which can help when working with fellow employees and customers.

Two-Year Cruise Line Services with bundled and embedded TVET qualifications in:

Food and Beverage Services NC II – 356 hrs.

Food and Beverage Services NC II qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to provide food and beverage service to guests in various food and beverage service facilities. To attain the National Qualification of Food and Beverage Services NC II, the candidate may apply for assessment in any accredited Assessment Centers, and must demonstrate competence in all units/clusters of core units of the Qualification. A person who has achieved this qualification and awarded National Certificate (NC) is competent to be employed as Waitstaff or Food and Beverage Service Attendant.

Housekeeping NC II – 436 hrs.

qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to prepare guest rooms, clean public areas and equipment, provide housekeeping services, provide valet services, handle intoxicated guest, and laundry linen and guest clothes to a range of accommodation services. To attain the National Qualification of Housekeeping NC II, the candidate may apply for assessment in an accredited Assessment Centers, and must demonstrate competence in all units/clusters of core units of the Qualification. A person who has achieved this qualification is competent to be employed as a Junior Cleaner, Assistant Cleaner, Assistant Public Area Cleaner, Cleaner, Public Area Cleaner, Attendant, Room/Cabin Attendant/Room Maid, Laundry Attendant, Housekeeping Attendant and Butler.

Food and Beverage Services (Bartending) NC II – 438 hrs.

Cookery NC II – 396 hrs.

The COOKERY NC II Qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to clean kitchen areas, prepare hot, cold meals and desserts for guests in various food and beverage service facilities.

A person who has achieved this Qualification is competent to be employed in any of the following positions in the Garde Manger, Pastry or in the Hot Kitchen Section as Cook or Commis or Assistant Cook.

Hospitality Services Technology (HST)

The Hospitality Services Technology is a 3-year PQF Level 5 (Diploma) program under Technical Education and Skills Authority (TESDA) that prepares students to have a practical and managerial skills in hotel operations, culinary, food service, and event planning. At the end of the program students will have National Certification in Bartending NC II, Cookery NC II, Commercial Cooking NC III, Housekeeping NC II, Tourism Promotion Services NC II, Housekeeping NC III, Housekeeping NC IV, Commercial Cooking NC IV, Events Management NC III, Front office service NC II, bookkeeping NC II and bread and pastry production NC II. The curriculum also includes industry exposure through on-the-job training and research that are essential in preparing the students to become adept future restaurateurs and hoteliers. Graduates of this program can acquire baccalaureate degree through a ladderized programs of BSHM, BSHM-CA and BSHM-CLS.

Senior High School (Grade 11-12)

Academic track - general academic strand (gas).

General Academic Strand does not specialize in any strand and it covers various disciplines like Humanities, Social Sciences, Organization, and Management. Students are free to choose any college degree program under the three other strands based on the elective they have chosen. This gives students more opportunity to explore their views   and flexible decision when it comes to choosing an undergraduate degree in the future.

Academic Track - Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM)

The ABM strand teaches the basic concepts of financial management, accounting, and corporate operations. Students who select this route will be prepared for careers in management and accounting which could be a sales manager, human resources, marketing director, project officer, bookkeeper, accounting clerk, internal auditor, and a lot more. The programs under this strand aim to instill crucial skills that one needs to perform well in their future career and business.

Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL) - HE/Tourism/HRM

TVL-HE/Tourism/HRM is designed to develop students’ skills useful for livelihood projects at home. It provides a curriculum that is a combination of core courses required for all SHS strands and specialized hands-on courses that meet the standard hour requirement and competency-based assessment of TESDA. The senior high school TVL track is designed for students who wish to start working right after they graduate from senior high school. These vocational courses give students the skills and knowledge they need to get the certifications necessary for work. The TVL track is ideal for those who intend to work abroad as skilled workers.

Accredited (Level III Reaccredited Status) by the Philippine Association College and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) will be changed and highlighted to become “ The BS in Hospitality Management Program is Accredited (Level III Reaccredited Status) by the Philippine Association Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA)”.

 Jaro Cathedral is one of Iloilo's oldest churches with a long, colorful history. Also known as the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary and National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles, the cathedral is lovingly called by the locals as simply Jaro Cathedral.

It first started as a small parish back in 1587. As the years went by, it became a cathedral, and today, it is a national shrine that serves as the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jaro.

The church was destroyed by an earthquake back in 1948 and was rebuilt in 1956. In 1976, Jaro Cathedral was declared a historical landmark.

Interestingly, the Jaro Cathedral is called the “male church,” while the Molo Church, which is also in Iloilo, is called the “female church.” The churches got their nicknames because of the saints displayed there.

Jaro Cathedral has male saints standing inside the church pillars, while Molo Church features female saints. Many people, especially locals, believe that the church's 400-year-old image of Mother and Child is miraculous.

You can find the Jaro Cathedral along the busy Plaza Rizal Street in Jaro. The best time to visit this during your day trip in Iloilo  is early in the morning or just before evening as the town winds down.

The province of Iloilo is famous as the home of La Paz Batchoy, a clear noodle soup with pork cracklings, beef, chicken stock, and round noodles. The most popular places to eat batchoy are Netong's, Deco’s, Ted's, and Inggo’s.

It's best eaten as a snack with coffee or Pancit Molo. Operating from 6 AM to 8 PM every day, on the roads of Lopez Jaena St., Don Aguedo Del Rosario house, near Jaro Square, the Original Biscocho House has served patrons for more than four decades.

They are experts in producing biscocho, the twice-baked, butter-coated, sugar-coated small loaves of bread. It's great to tickle the palate with coffee in the afternoon or even with a bowl of hot soup.

After a short tour, you can head to the Molo Mansion Café, located behind the mansion, and enjoy local Ilonggo dishes like Pancit Molo with kinihad (toasted bread).

Do try the intriguing buko ternate shake, a blue drink made with coconut meat and juice and served in a green coconut shell. Its signature blue color comes from the bluish ternate flower.

The historic Molo Mansion stands just across the St. Anne Parish or Molo Church . There are a lot of tours you can join to maximize your time here, or you can hop on a jeepney bound for Molo or Arevalo.

It originated from the seaport in the Philippine town of Molo. The Chinese tradesmen introduced wonton soup to the area, and local people started to call it Pancit Molo. Perhaps because there was no word for wonton, they likened it to pancit (noodles).

Tita Paz House of Pancit Molo is said to be the source of the famous soup. The restaurant shares a room with the Molo County Bakeshop, where residents can also buy gifts from Iloilo.

Kap Ising Pancit Molo is also one spot that locals love going to. Kap Ising's is said to have Pancit Molo's most exquisite taste in the region.

11. Have a Food Trip at Tatoy’s Manokan

One of Iloilo's best restaurants is Tatoy's Manokan. This popular restaurant was founded in the 1970s and was originally a three-table nipa shack. Tatoy was a fisherman, but he had the skills to cook them into tasty dishes. 

Tatoy’s is best known for its lechon manok (roasted chicken). Tatoy's chicken is marinated in native vinegar and calamansi with stuffed tamarind leaves and lemongrass. It has a rich, juicy, and savoy flavor that needs no sauce. 

Tatoy's also offers a wide variety of delicious seafood dishes. They have fresh scallops cooked with butter and garlic, grilled fish, kinilaw (ceviche), and stuffed squid.

There’s a large glass-covered table where a selection of mouthwatering meals is presented. They provide fresh mango, coconut shake, and coconut juice.

A high-end resort called Sicogon Island made this part of Iloilo famous during the 70s and 80s. Today, there are two resorts on the island: Huni Resort and Balay Kogon . A third one is opening soon. 

The island is still a popular Iloilo tourist spot because of its forests, mountains, and beaches where the sand has a light yellow or orange tone.

The Barangay Buaya Beach is believed to be the best swimming spot on the entire island. Teeming with nipa huts and tall coconut trees, it’s one of the best Iloilo beaches where you can unwind in peace.

If you want to snorkel, head to Tumaguin Island, but if you're going to do some hiking, you can take on the 1- to 2-hour hike toward the summit of Mount Opao.

Camiña Balay nga Bato is one of Iloilo’s most prominent landmarks. The complex is still home to the 4th generation Melocoton-Avancena family.

When visiting the old house, visitors are also welcome to visit the Antiques and Souvenir Shop named the Lola Rufina Heritage Curio Shop.

Saint figures crafted in red bricks, pictures, and textiles are just some of the rarer objects here. The wide staircase reveals a century-old Spanish style, where visitors are told to ascend sideways.

Casa Mariquit is a must-see well-preserved historic house in Iloilo. The house has been passed down through generations.

It became the residence of Mariquit Javellana Lopez, the granddaughter of banker Ramón Javellana, and her husband Fernando Lopez Sr., the former Vice President of the Philippines. 

The word “mariquit” comes from the Tagalog word marikit which means beautiful, most likely referring to both the lady of the house and the house itself.

A Casa Mariquit excursion will take you around the property: the master bedroom, the former bank vault that Ramon Javellana used during his banker days, and the many furniture and memorabilia that belongs to the family spanning generations.

Unlike other ancestral homes in Iloilo, Casa Mariquit doesn't have sprawling lawns. It's also not as grand as it looks. But the furniture and political campaign paraphernalia here speak volumes about its history.

16. Drink Coffee at Madge Café

The fresh coffee is the thing that distinguishes Madge from other coffee shops. The coffee beans come from the north and the provinces of Iloilo and Guimaras.

In comparison with traditional coffee shops, the brew here is produced using a flavor sieve at Madge's, which keeps coffee beans and helps the savors to grow with any additional layer of grain. 

Madge Café is one of the oldest coffee shops in Iloilo. It was founded in 1951 by Vicente De la Cruz. Initially, the shop sold halo-halo. Once Vicente realized that demand was seasonal, he chose to focus on coffee, which was his passion first and foremost.

Vicente and his wife, Magdalena, managed the business until they passed it on to their son, Gerardo. Along with his wife Julieta, they managed the cafe until he passed away. The family business was then passed down to Peter De la Cruz, his son. 

Customers can choose what kind of coffee they like best. There are choices for strong coffee at a very affordable price with and without milk.

A different process appears to exist for each type, but only Madge's barista knows the secret. The coffee is best served in combination with puto (steamed rice cake).

There are many heritage homes in Iloilo, and if you want to see the so-called Queen of Heritage Houses in Iloilo, head to Jaro and go on a tour inside the Vicente Lopez Heritage House. It is also known as Mansion de Lopez or Nelly’s Gardens and dates back to 1928.

The house was named after Nelly Lopez y Hofileña, the eldest daughter of the local couple Don Vicente Lopez and Doña Elena Hofileña. Its aristocratic roots are evident in its grand architecture, and because of its beauty and history, it was declared as a National Historic Landmark.

It’s easily accessible by riding taxicabs or jeepneys. You can also join a guided trip  for a hassle-free trip to this heritage house.

Calle Real is one of Iloilo’s busiest and most iconic streets. It’s a highly photographed historic building in the city of Iloilo, and you’ve probably seen it in some travel magazines.

Also known as J.M. Basa Street, it is lined with Spanish-era and Commonwealth buildings, some dating back to the 1800s.

People sometimes call it Heritage Street because the province's elite families once inhabited most of the buildings and homes here. It is easily accessible by jeepneys, and the majority of the tours in Iloilo include this stopover.

Many structures are built on one or two levels. On the first level, you can find shops, and on the second floor, you can find the residences of Iloilo’s elite families. 

In 2000, the municipal government adopted the regional Cultural Preservation Ordinance to protect and prevent any harm to the structures.

Now, many buildings have already been repaired and beautified due to the contributions of the local government and private sectors.

The striking Lizares Mansion in Tabuc Suba, Jaro, has witnessed a series of tragic events, including the torture of Filipinos during World War II.

If you want to see how the noble and wealthy families of Iloilo lived during the colonial times, don’t miss this beautiful but also sad reminder of the province’s past.

Filipino sugar baron Don Emiliano Lizares built the 3-story mansion in 1937 for his wife, Conchita Gamboa. During the war, the Lizares family fled to Pototan, Iloilo, to hide.

The Japanese imperial army used the mansion as headquarters and its basement as a torture ground. After the war, the Lizares family moved back, but the once beautiful villa became a living reminder of tragic times.

When the patriarch died, the mansion was transformed into a casino before it was sold to the Dominicans in 1962. After its renovation, the Lizares Mansion now serves as the church of the Angelicum School Iloilo that also stands inside the Lizares compound.

When you’re in Iloilo, you ride a taxicab or a jeepney, which is an accessible mode of public transportation in the Philippines, and see the white mansion along McArthur Drive in Tabuc Suba, Jaro.

Tourists can join tours and see the intricate rooms and details of its rich past. The best time to visit is during the Christmas season, when the whole mansion is adorned with holiday lights.

The town of Concepcion is blessed with one of the most scenic seascapes in the whole province of Iloilo. Forming a safe, natural harbor for Concepcion Bay are 16 islands connected by azure waters and abundant marine life.

It’s not as popular as Gigantes Islands, but the islands, islets, and beaches here are just as beautiful. You can go island hopping or beach-hopping between Malangabang Island and Sandbar, Agho Island, Bulubadiangan Island, and Sipol Island.

You can swim, snorkel, free dive, and scuba dive at the beaches in Concepcion Islands. You can trek Mt. Pan de Acuzar, which is also called Mt. Manaphag, Panay’s tallest peak.

Consider this as a challenge because Pan de Acuzar is the Philippines’ steepest mountain! After your trek, you can visit the Concepcion Island’s Spanish-style lighthouse that goes back to the colonial era on Calabaza Island.

This tourist spot in San Joaquin, Iloilo, is a far cry from the shores of the Gigantes Islands. Instead of powdery white sand, the sand in the 2-hectare Kuliatan Marine Sanctuary is dark and mostly made up of crushed corals.

But what makes this beach truly special is what you can see under the waters.

As the name suggests, it is a marine sanctuary. Snorkel here and discover the many corals and sea creatures swimming under the sea. You can also enjoy the beach facilities aside from the marine sanctuary or stay at one of the cottages or huts overnight.

Make sure to bring enough food and beverages when you plan on staying overnight as most small restaurants within the area are closed during off-peak hours. Most of all, keep the area clean and dispose garbage properly.

If you want to take a break from the back-to-back Iloilo beaches and island-hopping tours, you can swim in the calm waters of Nadsadjan Falls in Igbaras, Iloilo. At 100 feet tall, the rains fall beautifully to the natural swimming pool below. It’s one of the most relaxing tourist spots in Iloilo.

There are different types and sizes of trees and rocks along the path. Some stones are higher than usual, rough and hard, so be careful when trekking.

The Nadsadjan Falls is accessible by public transport, typically via a jeepney bound for Igbaras from Iloilo City. From the town proper, you need to take another jeepney to Barangay Passi. After a 45-minute trek, you’ll be rewarded with the majestic waters of the Nadsadjan Falls.

23. Try Roberto’s Siopao

One of the must-try food in Iloilo is Roberto’s Siopao. This household name is only available in Calle Real’s heritage district and cannot be bought anywhere else. The flavors of their siopao is so exceptional, it smells and tastes incredibly good without any sauce. 

Their bestselling siopao, Queen Siopao is a mixture of pork adobo, bacon, Chinese sausage and egg. It gets sold out fast, which is why most of its patronizers line up early in the morning.

King Siopao is also a crowd favorite because of its hefty servings of pork adobo, egg, chicken and Chinese sausage. You may also try their regular and jumbo servings! It’s a great pasalubong for your friends and family back home.

Bucari is known as the “Little Baguio” of Iloilo. Many tourists go here to cool off during the dry summer season in the Philippines.

• Tourist transport . It covers transport services whether for land, water and air transport for tourist use. – Land transport covers the operation of brand new, world-class buses and or mini-buses or coasters. – Tourist transport operators must have garage, hangar or berthing/docking facilities.
• Accommodation facilities . Condotel, apartment, hotel, serviced apartment, tourist inn, pension house, motel, that can accommodate tourists or guests. For condotel and apartment hotel or serviced apartment, each unit must have fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities.
• Health and Wellness . This covers the establishment and operation of destination spa, resort or hotel spa, therapeutic centers, traditional healing and other alternative healing and medical care services.
• Tourism Training Centers and Institutes : it covers curriculum, training laboratories, on-the-Job facilities and equipment endorsed by the appropriate industry association and approved by either the Technical and Skills Education and Development Authority (TESDA) for training courses or the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for degree courses, or other concerned government agencies and authority.
• Retirement Village : A retirement village must have a minimum of four (4) hectares of contiguous land. Project cost must be have at least the Philippine Peso equivalent of US$10 million.
• Restoration and or preservation and operation of historical shrines, landmarks and structures : It covers the conservation, preservation or restoration of national sites or properties. Undertaking the conservation and preservation, restoration or maintenance of historico-cultural heritage that includes any of the following may qualify for registration: – National shrines, monuments, and/or landmarks – Local historical sites/properties classified, identified, and listed in the National Registry of historic Structures – Cultural properties, treasures and/or artifacts.

Molo Church in Molo, Iloilo City, Philippines

Molo Plaza is the central landmark of Molo, one of the seven districts of Iloilo City. This area is where you can find many of the city’s iconic tourist spots including Molo Church and Molo Mansion. The district is also the birthplace of Pancit Molo (a popular Filipino wonton soup dish). Order a hot bowl of Kap Ising’s signature Pancit Molo at the tiny cafe at the plaza. Molo Church (St. Anne Parish Church) dominates the district’s skyline with its towering bell tower and signature red spires. Constructed in 1831, this Neo-Gothic colonial church is known as the “feminist church” because of the all-women ensemble of saints represented in 16 statues perched on the aisle pillars. The Molo Mansion is one of Iloilo City’s finest old homes. It was built in the 1920s and was reopened as a tourist spot and pasalubong store by SM’s Kultura.

Jaro Cathedral in Iloilo City, Philippines

Constructed in 1874, the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral is the first cathedral in Panay Island and an important pilgrimage site among devotees of the miraculous Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria. Her statue, perched atop the façade of the cathedral, was canonically crowned by a Pope and Saint John Paul II. The bell tower is located across a busy street from the church, which makes it distinct from other churches in Iloilo. Another feature of the church is its all-male ensemble of saints placed on the main pillars, except for the Virgin’s icon. The arrangement is in response to Molo Church’s all-female theme. The Candelaria’s feast is celebrated every 2nd of February, which draws a huge crowd of devotees.

The Iloilo River Esplanade is the Philippines’ longest linear park. This beautifully landscaped riverside park is a popular tourist spot where visitors can appreciate peaceful views along the Iloilo River. The best time to go is during the early morning and late afternoon hours when the sun is low and the sky is filled with a golden glow. Locals usually head out to the esplanade around this time for a hearty jog or bike. Muelle Deli & many other riverside cafes/restaurants offer a place to chill & have a fine meal while enjoying the scenery.

Take a walk down memory lane in Iloilo City’s old downtown & heritage district. Calle Real (Royal Street in Spanish) served as the city’s main street from the Spanish-colonial Era to around the early 1990s. Start with a tour of the Museum of Philippine Economic History, which shares the history of economic history of the country as well Iloilo’s past as a prosperous port city. With its naturally-protected harbor and river wharf, the city developed as the center of commerce south of Manila during the sugar boom years. Take a photo stop along J.M. Basa Street, where many historic buildings still stand. Have a taste of the famous Queen Siopao at Roberto’s while you’re there! At the Iloilo Provincial Capitol complex, you’ll find the Museo Iloilo and the Western Visayas Regional Museum.

Iloilo City is one of the few cities in the country that is conscious of its cultural heritage areas, actively securing resources and developing policies for their preservation. Republic Act 10555, enacted in 2013 under the authorship of then congressman Treñas, clearly specified several areas of the city as “Cultural Heritage Tourism Zones” and accorded priorities for preservation, refurbishment, and development by the Department of Tourism. Seven specific places were identified: two churches (Jaro, Molo) and their adjoining Plaza complexes, Fort San Pedro, the Central Business District (CBD), and the Plaza Libertad complex. In 2020 the act was modified in Congress to include the Arevalo Plaza complex. Walking through JM Basa Street in the early morning, from Plazoleta Gay intersection down to Plaza Libertad, a stretch of seven blocks, is a delight, with heritage buildings on both sides, the likes of which make it feel like parts of the European continent. Most are in neoclassical, beaux-arts, art deco, or streamline modern style. A high-rise, mixed use commercial and residential building is being constructed right on the border of the CBD heritage zone across Plazoleta Gay, and this has been controversial.

Plaza complexes have a fascinating history. Sociologists and historians say these arose with a proclamation of Philip II in the 1570s, defining the “urban” pattern of Spanish colonizers in their territories. It successfully centralized authority in a visually appealing, rectangular central space, which had the main government building, markets, and homes of prominent citizens around, with the church as the central institution. People were encouraged to live “ bajo de la campana ” (under the bells) – a more efficient way to call people to church, spread news, and warn of emergencies and attacks.  Developing on this concept, police stations, post offices, schools, and health centers were built around the plazas. Since Jaro, Molo, and Arevalo used to be independent municipalities, they had their own plazas, and were formally incorporated as districts of Iloilo City during the Commonwealth era.

Arevalo, also known as Villa, was once the seat of the Spanish government in Panay Island. It was established in 1588 by Governor Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa who named it after his hometown, Avila. It is reputed to have the third oldest cross in the Philippines, and one of the oldest Santo Niño images. The cross is in a small chapel about a kilometer away, in the barangay of Santa Cruz. Prominent in the plaza area are markers for Ramon Avanceña, a former Chief Justice and the educator-feminist Sofia Reyes de Veyra. Aside from the art-deco styled Rizal monument, there is a fluted column topped by a crown, dedicated to the former queen of Spain, Isabel II.  The old parish convent is still in use. The plaza is surrounded by many ornamental plants as the district is also known as the “flower garden of Iloilo.” A few steps away one can find ancient traditions of loom weaving, piña, and jusi  at the Iloilo Sinamay Dealer, and a heritage house/museum, the Camiña Balay na Bato.

Molo was also known as Parian, a Chinese enclave. The plaza is relatively smaller compared, but seems to have been designed to highlight the majestic Parish of St. Anne, built in the Gothic-Renaissance style in 1860, and once visited by Rizal in 1896. Notable structures in the plaza complex include an American-era art deco bandstand, a faux Grecian temple with statues from mythology, and a Maria Clara statue sculpted by the Italian Francisco Monti, whose work includes the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and the Metropolitan Theater. There is a children’s playground, and one corner has horizontal and parallel bars for gym workouts and pull-ups for the athletically inclined. Following its renovation and refurbishment, undertaken with the support of TIEZA and the National Historical Institute, the plaza and church now has a “wow” factor, especially at dusk when it begins to light up. Directly opposite the church is a grand mansion that is now an SM Kultura shop, its grounds hosting several trendy cafés and snack places. 

The Jaro Plaza has the belfry of the cathedral as its most prominent structure; unlike most belfries, this one is located a street away and separate from the church. The plaza has seen better days – it has a bandstand built during the 1930s. There is a monument to national hero Graciano Lopez Jaena and a war veterans’ memorial. Surrounding the plaza are magnificent, if decaying, mansions built during the early American era, that proudly proclaim Jaro as the “first millionaire’s row” in the country. Major heritage structures nearby include the Jaro Cathedral, seat of the Archbishopric; the former Jaro municipal hall, designed by Arellano in 1934 in the Art Deco style. The archbishop’s palace, designed by Nakpil, is across the Plaza, as is the Jaro Evangelical church, the first Baptist church in the country. The February 2 feast day celebration, cockfights, and procession are considered the most opulent, with prominent families from all over tracing ancestral links to Jaro in a bid to have their daughters selected as the Jaro carnival queen.

The Plaza Libertad complex was where the flag of Philippine independence was raised in 1898 when the Spanish hastily departed their last capital city in the Philippines – they moved the capital to Iloilo for a few months after the Americans took Manila. This scenic square was once known as Plaza Alfonso XII and served as the main social hub for the city, having regular band concerts. It has one of the oldest Rizal monuments, figures of Greek mythology attributed to Monti, and an American-era water trough, used as a planter. Plaza Libertad has several historic buildings around it such as the Masonic Temple Building, the residence of a former city mayor that has at various years been a Japanese garrison, a “comfort woman” station, hotel, and offices; currently it is a Land Bank branch. Heritage buildings bordering the plaza include the DBP, the PNB, and the Lacson house. The church of San Jose, run by the Augustinian order, and spiritual home of the Dinagyang Festival, used to be the most prominent structure, until it was eclipsed by the seven-story city hall, completed in 2015. Plaza Libertad’s masterful refurbishment and re-design has made it even more appealing and accessible, while providing additional open space for city hall activities.

The last of the heritage zones is also the oldest – Fort San Pedro. It was completed in 1616, when the capital of what was then the main Spanish settlement in Panay was moved to “La Punta,” an area near where we now find the Muelle Loney-Santo Rosario area, because Arevalo was under constant attack by the Dutch, the British, pirates, and slave traders. The Fort measured 60 x 60 meters. It was built from coral stones from the southern Panay coast and rocks from Guimaras. It served as the gateway to the Iloilo harbor. The fort was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and destroyed during the closing stages of World War II. Very little is left of the original fort – foundation stones, but it remains a popular venue for fishermen, bathers, and cyclists, and has the best view of the sunset, with Guimaras Island looming large across the strait. Miraculous religious statues have been found in the area, and are enshrined in the San Jose church.

While not considered heritage zones under the law, resources are allocated to other plazas as well. A koi pond has been built in the Lapaz plaza to add to its other attractions – tennis courts, a football field, and a clam shell-type sound stage. Mandurriao plaza has a monument to Gen. Douglas MacArthur.  

Lastly, one cannot write about Iloilo City nowadays without mentioning the award-winning Esplanades ; I can walk along scenic, sheltered riverside paths, crossing colorfully painted bridges, from the Molo Plaza to the CBD to Plaza Libertad, a stretch of about 5 kms. Achievements like these don’t get accomplished easily or within a single mayor’s term – they take vision, partnerships with the private sector, supportive legislators, relevant government agencies such as the National Historical Commission, and longer term political commitment. Iloilo City is now reaping benefits for being one of the most livable cities in the country, and is a preferred site for MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions).  Kadto na kamo sa Iloilo! Iloilo – 20 Places to visit in the “Heart of the Philippines”

Dubbed as the “ Heart of the Philippines ,” Iloilo province is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Visayas. When I visited this province, I instantly fell in love. Why not? The people there are very welcoming and the atmosphere is very calm. If I were to choose to live somewhere else beside from my hometown, I would definitely choose Iloilo. Situated by the banks of the province is the City of Iloilo , known as the “ City of Love ” or “ La Muy Leal y Noble Ciudad, ” the “Most Loyal and Noble City.” #IAmIloilo

This historic destination is the 38th province I have been to in my personal quest in visiting all 81 provinces in the Philippines. I can tell that Iloilo is full of experiences and places (not to mention, their delicious food!) waiting to be discovered. Who would have thought that this province has so much to offer than its usual reputation as the home of the Dinagyang Festival ? The province has proved to be a premier destination in Western Visayas.

In this blog, I have listed 20 of the most sought after tourist destinations that you, too, should visit when exploring the province of Iloilo. Hala bira!

Top 20 Tourist Spots in Iloilo

Angelicum school (lizares mansion).

One of the prominent structures in Iloilo is the Lizares Mansion, that has been transformed into the Angelicum School – Iloilo. This structure showcases a wide lawn and  its striking façade can be seen easily as it is near the road. The mansion named after Don Emiliano Lizares was also used as a headquarters of the Japanese forces during World War II and the property was later sold to the Dominican priests in 1962. This is one of the heritage houses that still stands, bearing witness to the rich history of the province.

Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral (St.Elizabeth of Hungary Church) and Belfry

This baroque-style church is one of the churches that define the rich history of Iloilo. Situated along a busy district, The Jaro Cathedral is also known as the site of Our Lady of Candles – who was declared as the patroness of Western Visayas during the Papal Visit of Saint John Paul II in 1981.

Its belfry is situated a meters away from the main structure of the church and is towering the near the cathedral grounds. To reach the Jaro cathedral, you can ride a jeepney with a “ Jaro CPU ” sign. Fare is around ₱ 8 – 10.

La Paz Public Market

Want to have an experience of the different flavors of Iloilo City? The La Paz Market is the place to be! Whether it be from pasalubong -buying to local market experience, and to eatery-hopping, the La Paz market is one of the places you might want to visit. You can find several batchoy eateries here and the also-famous Madge Cafe! This is the perfect place to chill!

Netong’s La Paz Batchoy

Your Iloilo trip will never be complete if you have not tasted their famous La Paz Batchoy! Yes! This original Filipino cuisine originated in the city’s La Paz District. When I went here with my partner, blogger-friends told me to go to Netong’s as they have the best Batchoy in town. Well, it did not disappoint! I give this a grade of 11/10! The owner of the eatery also told us that Batchoy is best paired with puto (steamed rice cake).

The eatery is situated right in the middle of the La Paz Public Market. You can ask the stall owners about the directions going there as the pathways may be tricky.

This family-owned coffee shop is known for its locally-sourced coffee and coffee products since the 1940s. Right at the heart of La Paz Market, Madge Cafe is pretty hard to miss! Enjoy their cup of coffee for ₱ 50 or less!

Museo Iloilo

Museo Iloilo is the first museum to be commissioned outside of Metro Manila. This museum has a number of interesting artifacts showcasing the rich culture of Western Visayas. A popular sight in this museum is the Santo Entiero – a sculpture of the dead Christ. What I like about this place is that it is situated in the heart of the city, and is near the Provincial Capitol!

Casa Real (Old Iloilo Provincial Capitol) and Arroyo Fountain

Located at the very heart of the Capital City of Iloilo is the Old Provincial Capitol, a.k.a. “ Casa Real ” and the Arroyo Fountain . The wood-and-stone Casa Real was once the seat of the government of the province (from 1901 to 2001) and was also once used by the Japanese forces during World War II. Meanwhile, the sculpture of the Arroyo fountain represents the richness of the province’s history and marks the Kilometer Zero of the province. The new provincial capitol of the province is located just behind Casa Real. It is also located near Museo Iloilo!

Dubbed as the “ Cultural Core of Iloilo ,” Calle Real would definitely bring you back to the colonial past. This strip dons several Spanish-style architecture and is considered to be the main artery of the City. Historic and heritage shops and structures grace the place and is a perfect place to stroll after a long day exploring Iloilo.

Camiña Balay nga Bato – Internet

Translated as “ stone house ,” this heritage structure has more to offer than its rich history. Built in 1860, it is strategically located near the Iloilo river to easily transport the Avanceña-Camiña family’s textiles business during that time. It is called Balay nga Bato because its walls were built using the river sand and limestone that helped reinforce the base of the house.

When visiting Balay nga Bato, I suggest that you indulge in their hot cocoa ( tsokolate ) and their hearty bread offerings during their no-time-limit-tour! You can also have a bowl of Pancit Molo if you wish to!

San Jose Church (birthplace of the Dinagyang Festival)

Located in Plaza Libertad , the San Jose Placer Church is the home of the world-famous Dinagyang Festival, which is celebrated every January, in honor of the Child Jesus (Sto. Niño). The church has an arcade of Corinthian columns and a maroon façade. This site is also believed to be the place where the first church in Iloilo was constructed by the Jesuits in 1607. You know what they say when you visit a church for the first time – make a wish and eventually that wish would come true!

Plaza Libertad

If you are fond of the Spanish language, Libertad means ‘Liberty’ or ‘freedom.’ Iloilo City’s historical square was the site where the Philippine flag was first raised in the island of Panay in 1898 when Spain surrendered Iloilo as its last capital / stronghold in the Philippines. Formerly known as “ Plaza Alfonso XII ,” the Plaza is surrounded by notable structures such as the Iloilo City Hall, San Jose Church, the Masonic Temple, and the Lacson Clan Ancestral House. To go there, you may ride these jeepney routes that go to the plaza or pass near it: Jaro CPU, City Proper, or Molo Baluarte.

St. Anne Parish Church (Molo Church) and Molo Plaza

Known as a feminist Church, St. Anne’s Parish is known as ‘ Church of the Women ‘ as the images of saints inside the church are all female. This white coral structure that was built in the 1830s is also recognizable because of its 2 pinkish spires and concrete façade. This Church was declared a National Landmark by the National Historical Institution in 1992 and is one of the most-visited churches in the province.

What I like about this place is the cool breeze that greets every visitor (as it is near the Iloilo river) and is strategically located to where jeepneys unload and pick-up passengers. The Molo Plaza is also located in front of the church where you can get to unwind after hearing mass.

Molo (Yusay-Consing) Mansion

Another heritage site located right across the Molo Church is the Molo Mansion. This Spanish-style architecture building is very unique that its façade is just as striking. Its simple yet elegant structure houses a museum for local art pieces from homegrown Iloilo artists and it also has a souvenir shop where you can buy your pasalubong . You can reach the Molo Mansion and Church by riding a ‘ Villa Arevalo ‘ or ‘ Molo ‘ sign.

Iloilo River Esplanade

If you want to have a walking trip from Molo Church and Molo Mansion, why not pay a visit at the Iloilo River Esplanade? This strip is one of the best spots to see the sun set from a distance. Walking past the Carpenter’s Bridge that separate Molo from Mandurriao, the esplanade gives you a refreshing view of the Molo District right across the river. Several food stalls can also be found along the strip.

Casa Mariquit

One of the oldest houses in the province, Casa Mariquit should never be missed in your itinerary. Be ready to travel to memory lane if you visit this place as antique furniture and memorabilia can be seen inside the Casa . The house was built in 1803 where it became home to Maria ‘ Mariquit ‘ Javellana and husband Fernando Lopez, who served as a Vice President of the Philippines in the 1950s. Its rustic ambiance, complemented with its original fixtures and ornaments, will let you feel what it is to live in the 19th century.

Miag-ao Church (Miag-ao)

Your Iloilo trip will definitely be not complete if you have not paid a visit in one of the most recognizable churches in the province. Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Church, popularly known as Miag-ao Church is one of the four Baroque Churches in the Philippines that is included in the World Heritage Sites list of UNESCO. It was Sunday when I visited the church and people flocked around to hear mass. Its notable coralline limestone façade, particularly that of San Cristobal carrying the Child Jesus with a native touch is what makes the Church an attraction on its own.

To get to Miag-ao Church, you can take south-bound jeepneys bound for Miag-ao and San Joaquin (in Mohon Terminal in Molo or in the Iloilo Terminal Market in the City Proper). Travel time is approximately around 45 minutes to 1 hour.

GarinFarm Pilgrimage Resort (San Joaquin)

If you want to have a slice of heaven on Earth, GarinFarm Resort is the place to go! This popular pilgrimage site 50 kilometers from Iloilo City and will give you a taste of ‘ The Farm Life .’ Aside from its primary use as a farm, GarinFarm also hosts leisure activities and accommodations for a fee. The ‘ Pilgrimage ‘ is the Farm’s most popular attraction, depicting various biblical events while climbing a hill. The huge cross atop the hill will greet you and its meditation tunnel will lead you to a ‘heavenly place’ where angels and saints welcome visitors to heaven. Yup, literally heaven on Earth! GarinFarm is approximately 1 hour from Iloilo’s Central Business District and some 15-20 minutes away from Miag-ao.

San Joaquin Cemetery (San Joaquin)

This National Cultural Treasure has an imposing, baroque-style Campo Santo (mortuary chapel) in sight and if ‘dark tourism’ is your theme, this is the place for you. The chapel is surprisingly made out of while corals and fossil stones! (Common in churches and structures near the shores, especially in the Visayas). There is also a replica sculpture of the La Pieta inside the chapel. Located just along the national highway, this site is one of the oldest cemeteries in Panay Island, on accounts that it was founded in the 1890s.

Nadsadjan Falls (Igbaras)

Found in the municipality of Igbaras, Nadsadjan Falls is one of the natural tourist spots in the province that I suggest you come visit. With a height of at least 100 feet going down a natural swimming pool, Nadsadjan Falls can be reached by riding a jeepney from either the Iloilo Market Terminal, Iloilo Supermart in Molo, or in Mohon Terminal in Oton. Travel time is around 1 hour and 30 minutes. From the 30-minute ride from Igbaras town proper, there is an additional 45-minute nature trek before reaching this wonder. I suggest that you visit the place in the early morning to coordinate with the Municipal Tourism Officer first!

Islas de Gigantes (Carles)

All the way up to the province’s northernmost municipality, this group of islands is one of the most popular spots in Iloilo. When I went to visit Capiz prior to going to Iloilo, we paid a visit to Islas de Gigantes as it is much nearer when coming from Roxas. Who would have thought that this attraction can be explored in one whole day? (Thank you to Las Islas Travel and Tours for the trip!) The group of islands is the main attraction in northern Panay and is only 2 hours away from Roxas (or 4 to 5 hours away from Iloilo City!) Do not forget to have a picture in the famous Cabugao Gamay Island and the Tangke Saltwater Lagoon! You’re welcome!

There is more to explore in Iloilo than just island-hopping, church-hopping, and tasting authentic Batchoy and Pancit Molo! Be sure to visit and experience these places in your Iloilo trip and feel the best of the province’s unique culture, not to mention, its pristine natural wonders!
