CAVALRY BASEBALL

Loudoun County Proud, Virginia

CAVALRY LEADS THE WAY

The Cavalry is a travel baseball organization based out of Loudoun County, Virginia that competes in the NVTBL.  Established in January 2016, the Cavalry consists of players primarily from Loudoun South Little League as well as other surrounding Loudoun County Little League teams.

The travel baseball year starts in fall and ends in spring, with tryouts for the next fall happening right after the spring season, typically near the start of June. Exact dates, times and location for tryouts will be posted for each team on this website and the Cavalry Facebook page typically around the end of May. If a player makes a Cavalry team they are committing to play with the team for a full year.

The fall season runs from September to November and usually consists of 2 practices during the week and a double header on Sundays. The spring season runs from April to June and usually consists of 1 practice during the week and a double header on Sundays. The number of tournaments (whether in town or out of town) depends on the specific Cavalry team. Most teams typically play about 3 tournaments each season. Usually it's a tournament to start the season, one to end the season and another somewhere in between.

We highly encourage our players to play Little League during the spring season, hence only 1 practice per week in the spring. The extra time on the field can help their baseball development and allows them to be eligible for Little League All-Stars, which is a great experience if they're selected. We also encourage our players to play other sports, if they're able to, because we feel playing other sports helps with the overall development of player's muscles and motor skills. Many of our players will play another sport in fall, while playing for their Cavalry team.

Starting at the end of January each Cavalry team begins an 8-10 week indoor training program. This is typically once per week in a facility near Dulles Corridor. The program works on every aspect of the game, as well as conditioning and is made to get the players ready for the spring season.

Typical dues per player range from $500-900 per year , depending on the Cavalry team and how many tournaments they decide to play. The more tournaments the higher the dues. The dues pay for a practice jersey, 2 game jerseys (home/away), 1 hat, tournament costs, umpires and field allocation for weekly double headers, team equipment, winter indoor training and insurance. (Note: the 7U development team  dues are less because of their overall costs)

To know which team to try out for, it's whatever your player's age is on April 30, that is your travel age for that year. For example, if your player is 11 years old on April 30th, then they would be trying out for the 11U team in the fall. For more information about the age policy check out the NVTBL website .

ROSTERS / SCHEDULES

Rosters / Schedules- NBM

By Joey Kamide .    NOVA Baseball Magazine

February 4 - Over 40 Division I recruits will suit up next month in the new D.C. Prospect League, which will lead into the abbreviated Virginia high school season set to begin in mid-April.

The four-team league will consist of an 18-game regular season played from Feb. 28 to Apr. 5, with games held at the new Fredericksburg Nationals ballpark and South County Middle School in Lorton. Both venues feature turf playing surfaces.

The league’s coaches will limit pitchers to 30 pitches to begin the season, with that count eventually increasing to 45.

“We are very excited to provide opportunities for high school players in both the DC Prospect League and the Spring Training Team League,” said Northern Virginia Travel Baseball League executive director Rob Hahne, one of the league’s organizers. “Baseball in March will be so important for all of these players both mentally and physically.”

The DCPL will give Major League Baseball scouts an opportunity to check in on potential pro prospects such as Madison senior two-way standout James Triantos, a North Carolina recruit who saw his draft stock rise after an impressive showing at October’s Perfect Game WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, FL. Other seniors such as Marshall righty Kyle Robinson (Texas Tech), Freedom-South Riding shortstop and pitcher Casey Cook (North Carolina) and Riverside right-hander Wyatt Shenkman (East Carolina) are also on draft radars, and a number of the league’s underclassmen - notably Bishop O’Connell right-hander Jack O’Connor (Virginia), Independence righty Bryce Dolby (Mississippi) and McLean outfielder and pitcher Griffin Stieg (Virginia Tech) - are considered potential prospects for the 2022 MLB Draft.

The league will provide an ultra-competitive environment for some of the area’s top talent as the state’s high school programs prepare for a long-awaited return to the diamond. Both the Virginia High School League and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association are scheduled to begin their abbreviated seasons on Apr. 12.

The last public school contest played in Virginia was on June 14, 2019 when Lake Braddock defeated Westfield in the VHSL Class 6 state final. A handful of private school games were played last spring before the COVID-19 shutdown.

NVTBL HS Spring Training League

Our HS Spring Training League will play from March 2 - April 3.  This league will help prepare players for their upcoming HS seasons on April 12th.  We are very excited to provide this opportunity for high-level HS players throughout Northern Virginia.

Loudoun County approves plan to build largest high school football stadium in county

LEESBURG, Va. ( DC News Now ) — Two new schools are coming to Loudoun County on the southwest corner of Evergreen Mills Road and Red Hill Road — and now, after a vote by county supervisors, we know a 5,000-seat stadium will be built too.

Money for the schools was approved last year. As the county finalized the construction plan, it was confronted with a question over the size of the campus’s athletic field and stadium — how many spectators should it hold?

Spotsylvania County school board proposes new drug testing policy

The proposal to build a 5,000-person capacity site was controversial, and some people raised concerns over the impacts of traffic and whether the road construction for the project would be adequate.

“I have no concern about the new schools coming to our community except for the large super-stadium,” Skip Edgemond said to the Board of Supervisors last week ahead of the vote.

The stadium will be the largest for any high school stadium in the county — surpassing the 4,000-person capacity site at Tuscarora High School. It will match the capacity Segra Field, home of Loudoun United FC.

“Downsizing this stadium would be cutting off our nose to spite our face,” Supervisor Juli Briskman said. “We know these kids are coming.”

The high school will hold up to 2,100 students, and the elementary school will hold nearly 1,000.

“It’s a very large school, it makes sense for it to have a larger stadium,” said Supervisor Matt Letourneau. “I think sometimes we overthink things, but it’s really as simple as that.”

The board voted down a proposal to make the stadium a 2,700-person capacity site — a 4-4-1 vote. It then approved the initial plan for the school site with the 5,000-person capacity stadium — a 6-2-1 vote with Supervisor Laura TeKrony and Chair Phyllis Randall voting against the measure.

Arlington County approves $1.5 million for after-school programs; advocates hope it helps drug problem

They cited concerns over the location and simply whether it’s needed.

“I often go to games,” Randall said. “[The current] stadiums were not full even in those times. And those were stadiums that seat 4,000 people.”

“I believe the scope and size of the larger capacity stadium is more appropriate within the suburban policy area, in a centralized location that serves larger population centers,” TeKrony added.

The typical high school in Loudoun County was built for a 1,800-student capacity.

A nice guy: Many in baseball remember scorned and suddenly retired umpire Ángel Hernández fondly

SAN DIEGO (AP) — After further review, maybe Ángel Hernández wasn’t that bad of a guy.

That seemed to be the prevailing sentiment among major league managers and players who reacted to the sudden retirement of the longtime and often scorned umpire , whose big league career began more than three decades ago.

Most of those who spoke about the 62-year-old Hernández mentioned his long tenure and pleasant personal interactions rather than any beefs over missed calls or ejections. Some had reactions that were open to interpretation, and some simply declined to comment. Some players even said they’ll miss him.

“Whether he’s good, bad or indifferent, I know that a lot of people have a very strong opinion of Ángel,” Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday. “We don’t have to worry about that anymore. He was a good human being, he treated me well. I always had great conversations with him, and that’s what I’ll remember most.”

Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker chuckled when asked for his reaction to the retirement of the umpire who unsuccessfully sued Major League Baseball for racial discrimination .

“I will say that Ángel is a really good guy. That is real,” Schumaker said. “He did a lot of stuff in the community, especially in Florida. If you talk to a lot of guys, they’ll say he was one of the nicest guys of the umpire crews. There are also worse umpires than Ángel. He got a lot of criticism for some calls and obviously a lot of umpires are going to get criticism for calls.

“Umpiring is not easy. It’s hard,” Schumaker added. “I don’t know why he retired so quick, there’s probably something behind that. I think the game tells you when you should retire. The game told me when I should retire. I hope he has a really good retirement and enjoys himself.”

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol was the last manager ejected by Hernández and Lance Lynn was the last player, both in spring training.

“I love that,” Marmol said about that distinction. “I have zero comment.”

Texas Rangers rookie outfielder/designated hitter Wyatt Langford, back in the clubhouse Tuesday after being activated from the injured list, said he got several texts Monday after the news that Hernández was retiring. The messages were about him being on the receiving end of one of the last overly egregious moments by the umpire.

On April 12 at Houston, with Hernández behind the plate and J.P. France pitching for the Astros, Langford had a 2-0 count before Hernández rang him up on three straight pitches out of the zone.

“At one point, it stinks, but one side of is it kind of cool, actually, to be one the last guys,” Langford said.

Langford said he saw the video Monday when it popped up somewhere.

“I forgot how bad it was, the last pitch,” he said.

Cleveland Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor thinks Hernández is going to be missed and called him “probably one of my favorite umps.” He said Hernández would often ask how Naylor and his brothers were doing.

“The keyboard warriors don’t interact with him, so they can’t speak on how he really is. He’s a very kind person,” Naylor said.

San Diego Padres slugger Manny Machado said some players will miss him and some won’t. He’ll remember Hernández as being “so nice, so kind. He had that old-school mentality.

“He’s had a hell of a career, long time,” Machado said. “I love Ángel. Obviously, he’s made some pretty foolish calls and stuff, but I think it’s human nature. I think the game nowadays has changed so much. It’s not easy for those guys out there, I think that’s what I’ve learned.”

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Hernández has “wrongly been the poster child, to be a punching bag for officiating. The reality is, he spent a lot of time in this league and cared about his craft. He’s a great guy and I wish him well in his next chapter. I think it’s a little unfortunate what I think is over-the-top criticism of him even going into retirement.”

Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington said Hernández “must have had enough.”

When someone pointed out to Washington that he criticized Hernández in 2011, he said: “You won’t find a single manager, player or coach that ever questioned Ángel Hernández who also haven’t questioned other umpires out there.”

Said Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson: “That’s the last job I’d ever want. I’m telling you, because there’s so much scrutiny. But he’s a good man. He loved the game, so I wish him all the best.”

Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker said he’s known Hernández since their days in the Carolina League. “Ángel is a very nice man. He’s always been really good to me, very respectful and that’s what I look at. I don’t look at the other stuff.”

Seattle manager Scott Servais broke into the majors as a catcher in 1991, which was when Hernández did his first big league game.

“So I got to catch with him behind me, I’ve been in the dugout when he’s been out there. So, a very long career and he’s been around the game, saw a lot of things. That’s how I’m going to answer it,” Servais said.
