The final stage of the 2024 Tour de France will start in Monaco!

turismo tour de france

"You can't replace Paris just like that. Something prestigious was needed to finish this event," said Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France, who was at the Yacht Club de Monaco alongside Prince Albert II on 3 December to officially announce the news.

turismo tour de france

The Principality will host the final stage of Le Tour in 2024. For the culmination of the race, the riders will set off from the unique setting of Monaco for an individual time trial. Their destination will be the famous Promenade des Anglais in Nice. The news should be welcomed by the peloton, as many professional cyclists have set up home in Monaco, which offers the perfect location for training with its hilly back country and unrivalled passes with views of the Mediterranean, between the sea and the mountains.

While the exact details of the stage have not yet been revealed, it will feature altitude gains and a route covering at least 30 km between the Principality and Nice. "More interesting for spectators than the traditional parade with nothing riding on it, no matter how magnificent it may be, on the Champs-Elysées", said the Tour boss. The time trial could affect the final standings.

Made necessary by the Olympic Games in Paris, the switch is almost unprecedented. Not since 1903 and 1904 has the final stage been held outside the French capital. The Sovereign declared his delight at once again hosting the Tour de France, fifteen years after the race last came to the Principality. The first stage also started from Monaco in 2009, and the route followed part of the Formula 1 circuit, before leaving the Principality the following day and heading for the Var départment of France.

All eyes will be on Monaco on 21 July 2024, for the climax of the Tour de France!

The climb is relatively gentle for the first 12km before it starts to get steeper. There are a few brief flat sections but these are generally followed by steep gradients again. The Col du Galibier has been used in some memorable moments in Tour de France history. In 2011, Cadel Evans became the first Australian to win the Tour de France after he attacked on the Col du Galibier and took the lead from Andy Schleck. In recent years, the Côte de Montvernier has been used as a launchpad for attacks by riders looking to take the overall lead in the race. In 2011, eventual winner Cadel Evans used the Côte de Montvernier to attack his rivals and take the yellow jersey. In 2015, Nairo Quintana used a similar strategy on the Côte de Montvernier to take the lead from Chris Froome and win that year's Tour de France.

Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2024

Italy has always been a land of cyclists ..

If you try to think about it for a moment, you will quickly realize how this statement is absolutely true. Over the past hundred years, the Italian peninsula has given birth to many champions on two wheels.

Try to stop for a moment, and you will immediately realise how this land has given birth over the last century to many champions on two wheels: the Tuscan Gino Bartali , also known as the Giant of the Mountains , the Piedmontese Fausto Coppi , nicknamed the Heron , and finally the Pirate , the Romagna-born Marco Pantani .

Three champions from different backgrounds, with three distinct sporting histories behind them, but who were able to lead Italian cycling to the international Olympus with passion and dedication.

It can therefore be no coincidence that, for the first time since 1903, Grand Départ del Tour de France 2024 , will start from Italy with three exciting stages that will run precisely along the roads of their homelands.

It is by cycling that you learn the contours of a country best, because you have to sweat it out on the hills and freewheel down the slopes. Ernest Hemingway

THE GRAND DÉPART STAGES

Grand Depart Tour de France 2024 - mappa

Exactly one hundred years after Ottavio Bottecchia 's victory in the Tour de France and the participation of Alfonsina Strada in the Giro d'Italia as the only woman, in 2024 it will be Italy's turn to kick off the world's most-watched cycling event , thanks mainly to the collaboration between Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont, which have always loved cycling and are committed to promoting a strong cycling culture, including from a tourism perspective.

Three not-to-be-missed race stages that will cross much of the territory of north-central Italy and take us all the way to the French border, for a total route of more than 600 km in total.

Emilia-Romagna: a land to discover by bicycle

From Piacenza to Rimini, Emilia-Romagna succeeds in delighting bikers and cyclists , thanks to its territory made up of plains, rolling hills but also steep climbs and descents.

Many itineraries are possible and suitable for everyone : there are those that are family-friendly, with children in tow, up to those that are suitable for experts and experienced sportsmen.

A unique territory that thanks to the low speed of two wheels, it is possible to get to know in its most intimate aspects, thus going to reveal some precious gems from the artistic, cultural, naturalistic and gastronomic points of view.

Emilia-Romagna: 7 reasons to travel by bike

The region can therefore be visited to the rhythm of the pedals (of all types of bicycles) and you do not have to be an athlete, but simply have a desire for an active holiday.

  • Emilia-Romagna is the most bike-friendly region in Italy , offering enthusiasts more than 1285 km of bike paths;
  • Ferrara is the "bicycle capital of Italy": the use of bikes is among the highest in Europe;
  • Emilia-Romagna is a land that loves sports and sportsmen ( SportValley ): every year it hosts major national and international events, including cycling ones;
  • Emilia-Romagna is dotted with equipped hotels ( Bike Hotel ) with solutions, services and infrastructure for cyclists and enthusiasts (bike storage, bike wash, bike workshop, laundry for technical clothing, etc.);
  • Every year Emilia-Romagna hosts the Italian Bike Festival , the great International Bike Exhibition;
  • Three of the fifteen routes that make up the European bicycle tourism network ( Eurovelo ) cross Emilia-Romagna: Eurovelo 5 , Eurovelo 7 and Eurovelo 8 ;
  • Emilia-Romagna boasts numerous cycle routes , all of which are worth riding. Including: Ciclovia del Sole , route between Mirandola and Bologna; Food Valley Bike from Parma to Busseto; Ciclovie dei Parchi inside the parks and nature reserves of Emilia Romagna; Via Romagna through cities of art, historic villages and the natural beauty of Romagna.
The bicycle is beautiful because of what it can give you. It makes you feel good, it gives you a chance to feel, to talk, to see the world from another angle. Davide Cassani

All over the country, you can choose sustainable options, and thus travel responsibly while fulfilling your dream trips.

France Celebrates 150 Years of Impressionism Throughout the Country!

Maison et jardins de Claude Monet à Giverny, en Normandie.

Sun rays, water reflections, verdant countryside, and the remarkable palette of lights and colors in Normandy and the Seine Valley ignited the creativity of the first impressionist painters. 150 years after the foundational exhibition in Paris in 1874, unprecedented displays are scheduled for 2024 across thirty French museums, featuring 180 exceptional loans from the Musée d'Orsay. From Provence to Hauts-de-France, and from Alsace to the island of La Réunion, visitors will rediscover iconic or lesser-known works while immersing themselves in the natural, urban, or maritime landscapes depicted by Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Morisot, and Cézanne

  • The Tour de France in Provence

On July 7 2021, the 11th stage of the Tour de France will go through the Vaucluse. This is going to be quite an event as, for the first time in the history of the Tour, the racers will climb Mont Ventoux twice. Here is our advice and musts to cover the stage at your own pace as if you were with them on the road and enjoy this cycle tourism escapade in your own way.

Mont-Ventoux, a mythical ascent

We can’t get enough of the giant of provence.

The 199-km stage will link the towns of Sorgues and Malaucène. Since 1951, Mont-Ventoux has already welcomed the racers of the Tour de France 16 times. The emblematic site with its lunar landscape and the steep road is a real challenge for the champions. A 360° route awaits the racers around Mont-Ventoux. The first ascent will start from Sault with a 5% gradient, then the cyclists will climb the 8.8% slope from Bédoin. On the road, glance at the famous Chalet Reynard, a former hut built in 1929 to provide food for skiers, and which became a restaurant on the South face of Mont-Ventoux. The view is breath-taking! Want to ride in the wheel tracks of the great racers? You too can try the experience of cycle touring and plan the programme of your stage according to your level: an athletic session or more of a soothing interlude in the middle of nature? Whether you have chosen to rise to the challenge of Mont Ventoux or not, take a break with one of the Accueil Vélo© service providers who offer suitable services for cycle tourists.

From Sorgues to Gordes

Following the tour de france.

The route of the Tour de France always has some good surprises in store, but this time, get away from your TV screen. Before or after the racers, take the same itinerary: an escapade in Provence with as a bonus some very pretty stages and unique panoramas. On the way, stop off at the town nicknamed the “Venise Comtadine”, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue , with its famous canals and antique dealers. Head next for Fontaine-de-Vaucluse , where a number of poets found their inspiration, including Pétrarque who has a column to commemorate him. It’s also the village where the River Sorgues rises, the biggest resurgence in Europe. The village of Gordes is also well worth a visit. On a hillside in the heart of the Monts du Vaucluse, this village is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France with its castle which looks like an impregnable fortress and which now hosts exhibitions. Just as majestic and not far away, the Cistercian abbey of Sénanque welcomes you and the setting when the lavender around it is in bloom is absolutely enchanting.

From Roussillon to Sault

A festival of colours.

Near Roussillon , the landscapes are ochre-coloured in the middle of the famous Provencal Colorado . Absolutely fascinating! Then we ride on to Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt for another fantastic sight. The village which is perched on a spur of rock offers a unique panorama of the Luberon , the Alpilles and the Monts de Vaucluse. The landscapes go by with cherry trees, olive trees and vines. As you wander around the little streets in the village you will see the most beautiful ornamental doors. We recommend visiting the former mill, one of the rare ones to still have its sails. And for a beautiful end to the visit, in June and July, the fields of lavender are in flower and the Plateau de Sault is covered in swathes of violet-blue flowers. Absolutely magical!

The end of the escapade in Malaucène

At the foot of mont ventoux.

As you follow the route of the 2021 Tour de France, on your way you will come to the charming village of Malaucène . Located at the foot of Mont Ventoux, the village is a real cyclists’ haunt all year round. Take a seat and have a cup of coffee on a terrace and try and count them! Make the most of the pleasant alley in the shade of the plane trees, the Wednesday morning market and the beautiful fortified church. The unique architecture of the houses which were built partly due to the ramparts which go through the town will amaze you. And wander off to the Source du Groseau, a quiet, shady site which once fed as many as 17 mills. The ideal place for a picnic with the family or friends. Go up to the calvaire along a typical paved street and enjoy the exceptional panorama.

What you need to know to see the 2021 Tour de France live

Information and good practices.

To enjoy the Tour de France to the full, here is some advice. If you are coming by car, camper or caravan, plan where to park beforehand because access to Mont Ventoux will be closed from July 6. On the other hand the access is authorised for pedestrians and cyclists. The southern sun is generous and it can be extremely hot on the Provencal slopes. Remember to bring something to drink, a suitable hat and a good dose of sun cream. From the point of view of good practices, you should keep at least 2 metres away from the racers, and forget selfies! Mont Ventoux is part of the Natural Regional Park : it is very important to respect the environment and there are recycling containers available for your waste. Tour de France

Tour de France all'Arc de Triomphe, ph. Frederic Legrand (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0)

Puoi consultare i portali ufficiali  Tour de France Grand Départ 2024  e  https://www.letouritalia.it/

How to watch the Tour de France live stream 2024

All the information you need in order to tune into the biggest race of the year

The final podium of the 2023 Tour de France on the Champs-Elysées in Paris

The wait is nearly over for the biggest bike race of the year, the Tour de France 2024 . Like us, you'll probably be wanting to tune in and watch, so we've put together a comprehensive guide to exactly how you can watch everything from live coverage to highlights of this iconic Grand Tour.

It should be an exciting battle for overall victory, with four potential winners all vying for the maillot jaune. Reigning champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike), Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) and Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) are the men most likely, although newly-anointed Giro d'Italia champion Pogačar is the only rider to have come through the early season unscathed. The other three have missed training time after tangling with each other in the same crash in Itzulia Basque Country in April.

Vingegaard was the worst affected , and in early June there was still a question mark over whether he would definitely be at the Tour de France.

There are plenty of sprinting opportunities scattered throughout the race. Last year's green jersey Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) will be the man to beat, pushed hard others including Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Fabio Jakobsen (dsm-firmenich-PostNL). Many eyes will also be on Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan), who returns for his last Tour de France in the hope of finally beating the all-time 35-stage-win record that he is currently tied on with Eddy Merckx.

The final stage sees the race make way for the Paris Olympic Games and finish outside the capital for the first time in history, with a time trial from Monaco to Nice.

When is the Tour de France?

The Tour de France will begin in Florence on June 29, and finish three weeks later on July 21 in Nice. Individual stages will be broadcast in full on Discovery+ .

Check your chosen streaming service in your territory for broadcast times of individual stages.

After cutting his teeth on local and national newspapers, James began at Cycling Weekly as a sub-editor in 2000 when the current office was literally all fields.

Eventually becoming chief sub-editor, in 2016 he switched to the job of full-time writer, and covers news, racing and features.

A lifelong cyclist and cycling fan, James's racing days (and most of his fitness) are now behind him. But he still rides regularly, both on the road and on the gravelly stuff.

A group of cyclists rounds a corner on a mountain road as a crowd of fans cheers during the 2018 Tour de France.

Each July, the most elite cyclists in the world compete in the Tour de France, a nearly monthlong race that covers thousands of kilometers of punishing terrain in the Pyrenees and Alps.

An avid cycling fan, Utrecht University geologist Douwe van Hinsbergen had watched the race for years. Behind the zooming athletes, he said he always saw something else: a geological excursion. As TV commentators filled hours of uninterrupted live coverage with historical and cultural information about locations on the route, he wondered: Could geology have a place in these broadcasts, too?

With the help of his university and outside grants, the idea grew, and the Geo-Sports team formed. Now, Tour de France viewers in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands can catch 2-minute geology segments on broadcast television during both the men’s and women’s tours.

“It’s really, really fun,” van Hinsbergen said.

This is the second year the segments will be televised.

YouTube video

The Geo-Sports clips feature van Hinsbergen and Utrecht University Earth scientist Marjolein Naudé presenting the geologic history surrounding the routes. (The Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes routes differ each year.)

In 2023, the subjects covered by Geo-Sports varied widely, ranging from fossils found on the banks of the Lot River to volcanic materials used to build the striking cathedral of Notre Dame de l’Assomption in Clermont-Ferrand. This year, the team has created clips about the earthquake history of the Italian Apennine Mountains and the ways that geology influenced wine culture in the Burgundy region of France, among other topics.

Along with the broadcasts, Geo-Sports produces blogs written by geoscientists from around the world. “We try to make it a completely open platform for everybody to share their knowledge,” van Hinsbergen said. The Geo-Sports team also plans to work with secondary school teachers to adapt some of their materials for educational purposes, he said.

“It requires a unique amount of patience to construct something which is articulate and sufficiently specific to tell a story.”

It’s “brilliant” to use the Tour de France as a “meeting ground between the world of higher education and the world of regular people,” said Nick Zentner , a geologist at Central Washington University who has presented his own geology show, Nick on the Rocks , on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the United States.

Zentner said he was impressed with the warm and welcoming tone and accessible pace of the Geo-Sports video clips. “That’s a key part of any kind of science communication,” he said.

Engaging Sports Audiences

Creating clips for cycling fans requires a different approach to communication than the one van Hinsbergen normally takes. Viewers pay attention to the race broadcast because they’re interested in cycling, not necessarily in geology, van Hinsbergen said. Because of that, the content needs to be not only accurate and clear but highly interesting, uplifting, and fun, he explained.

“I watch cycling every day, and I do geology every day. And that’s what’s appreciated.”

For those reasons, van Hinsbergen and the team focus the videos on highly visible, physical examples of geological processes, said Mark Carpenter , a filmmaker, geoscience educator, and the team’s producer and director.

“It requires a unique amount of patience to construct something which is articulate and sufficiently specific to tell a story,” Carpenter said. “In a 2-minute clip, it’s all got to be at the right pitch.” As director, he watches carefully for moments that might exceed the public’s understanding or interest and guides the presenter back on track.

The team’s appreciation for cycling lends them an advantage, too: They’re able to relate the geology of each tour stage to how the cyclists might perform. “What [the audience] is tuning in for is someone who’s a cross between an interesting science journalist and someone who has a feel for bike racing,” Carpenter said. “That’s what makes us unique.”

“I’m not playing a role—I’m actually me, I actually do this,” van Hinsbergen said. “I watch cycling every day, and I do geology every day. And that’s what’s appreciated.”
