Visit Sarasota County gears up for events celebrating local tourism community | Indicators

T he coming weeks are brimming with excitement here at Visit Sarasota County. As we dive into May, we're gearing up for our annual National Travel and Tourism Week event. It's a time-honored tradition in the hospitality and tourism industry, shining a spotlight on the vital role travel plays across America.

And here at home, we're thrilled to celebrate the individuals and organizations that make our local tourism community thrive.

One highlight of this event is the presentation of the Voice of Sarasota award, selected annually by our VSC Board. It's an honor bestowed upon individuals whose exceptional efforts have truly elevated Sarasota County as a tourism destination. This year, we're proud to recognize Jennifer Rominiecki, president and CEO of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, as the 2024 Voice of Sarasota. Jennifer's dedication echoes that of past recipients such as restaurateur Michael Klauber (2023) and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport CEO Fredrick J. Piccolo (2022), whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our community.

I'm especially thrilled to announce the return of our hospitality industry awards program, now known as The Haley Hall of Fame Awards. Named in tribute to my predecessor and dear friend Virginia J. Haley, this program recognizes excellence in our field. Virginia's 24 years of service to VSC and the local hospitality industry exemplify the dedication and passion that continue to inspire us today. We'll be unveiling the candidates and winners of these prestigious awards at our National Travel and Tourism Week celebration.

Looking ahead to June, I can't contain my excitement for Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week! Now in its 19th year, this culinary extravaganza is close to my heart. It's a joyous celebration of our amazing partner restaurants, offering delectable two-course lunches and three-course dinners, along with upgrades including tantalizing wine flights and cocktail pairings. It's not just about the food; it's about bringing our community together to support our local businesses and hospitality workers.

Witnessing the evolution of Savor Sarasota over the past 19 years fills me with immense pride. We were able to develop a program that drives business during a historically slower season and create a platform to tell the stories of our unique restaurants, chefs and others who make up our culinary community. The result has been that our restaurant community has flourished, transforming Sarasota County into a culinary destination to be reckoned with. From innovative dishes to vibrant flavors, there's so much to savor and explore here.

I'm passionate about showcasing the best of what Sarasota County has to offer, both to our residents and visitors alike. Together, let's celebrate the spirit of travel, the excellence of our hospitality industry, and the culinary delights that make our corner of the world truly special.

On the gulf coast of southwest Florida just an hour south of Tampa, Sarasota is a town we consider to be a hidden gem. Because of all the fantastic Sarasota attractions, the town motto describes it as a town “where urban amenities meet small-town living.”

I am obsessed with Sarasota and there is a reason it tops my list of places in Florida that look like Europe!

We couldn’t agree more. Sarasota’s Italian-influenced architecture, diverse collection of environmental attractions, and glittering beaches make it a sleepy paradise. It’s no wonder Sarasota is the winter headquarters of the Ringling Brothers Circus!

Whether you’re discovering the area for the first time, or you’re a local looking for something new, we’ll help you treat yourself to the best things to do in Sarasota, FL.

Ringling museum of art.

Located on the Ringling Brothers Museum campus, the Ringling Museum of Art started as a collection of personal art belonging to the circus co-founder John Ringling. Works include those by Velázquez, Rubens, and Veronese. The Ringling is only an hour south of Tampa by car, making it a must-visit on a day trip from Tampa.

Visitors will first be charmed by a stunning, Renaissance-inspired, pink courtyard. There you can find bronze and stone casts of iconic sculptures-including Michaelangelo’s David. Once inside, art lovers can gaze at the expansive collection in the long building that frames the courtyard. Visiting this museum in Florida is one of the best things to do in Sarasota. It’s known for its works from the Roman, Greek, Medieval, and Renaissance periods.

The Ringling has a top entrance fee of $25 for adults, offering lower payment tiers for children, seniors, and college students! Reduced entrance rates are offered on Thursdays between 5 PM – 8 PM.

Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach has been named one of the finest white sand beaches in the country. Swimming there is also one of the best things to do in Sarasota! This is a great family destination, ideal for children looking to collect shells as souvenirs.

Siesta Key is broken up into smaller beaches. Turtle Beach is a quieter beach option for those looking for a low-key afternoon to enjoy the rest of that book. The Point of Rocks is a must for snorkelers to observe sea life.

Adjacent to the beaches is Siesta Village, filled to the brim with dining options, quaint boutiques and shops, restaurants, and cafes to grab a cup of joe. Those lucky enough to visit on a Sunday night will be treated to the beats of the drum circle while watching sword-balancing belly dancers!

Siesta Key Beach has something to offer for everyone, making it one of the best Sarasota attractions.

Myakka River State Park

So you want to feel what Florida must have felt like when Spanish explorers first encountered the land? That’s the feeling you’ll get when you step foot into Myakka River State Park.

One of the best Sarasota attractions, the Myakka River winds through the grounds, full of tall pines, vast prairies littered with wildflowers, and wetlands teeming with wildlife. The Myakka River State Park is one of Florida’s oldest and most expansive state parks at 58 square miles.

In addition to boating, fishing, and canoeing, guests can walk the Birdwalk at Myakka. The long-planked bridge offers a way to observe the ecosystems up close without disturbing anything. This is an excellent spot for birders to add to their life lists, and maybe even see bald eagles!

Families can take their children for a walk through the pines and palms through the Canopy Walkway, suspended 25 feet above the ground, making it one of the best things to do in Sarasota with kids!

Sarasota Farmers Market

One of the best ways to get a taste of Sarasota, and we mean literally, is to make a visit to the Sarasota Farmers Market. Founded in 1979 by the Downtown Merchant’s Association, it was designed to bring more foot traffic downtown.

Today, the Farmers Market is a celebration of the best Sarasota has to offer. The streets downtown are lined with vendors, selling everything from fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers, local art, and every kind of street food imaginable. Musicians can also be found playing on the streets as well.

A non-profit, the Farmers Market takes pride in their philanthropy, funneling their earnings back into the community. You can feel good about emptying your pockets here. We suggest you come here hungry.

Bayfront Park

Just a walk across the street downtown lies one of the most beautiful Sarasota attractions. A charming marina, Bayfront Park is to Sarasota what Grant Park is to Chicago.

Overlooking the Sarasota Bay, a large stone archway covered in bougainvilleas welcomes visitors to the park. Once inside, the pavilion offers benches to gaze over the marina, a gigantic playground for children, and picnic tables perfect for an outdoor lunch.

Want to take to the water? The Marina has sailboats and sight-seeing cruises available. This is also a perfect place for deep-sea fishers to launch their boats.

Children can enjoy the Steigerwaldt Fountain, a water feature where jets shoot water up at timed intervals, a perfect way to beat the heat. The fountain, as well as the entire park, is dog-friendly!

If you’re hungry for a nosh, you can head to the adjacent O’Leary’s Tiki Bar and Grill, a tropical-themed restaurant offering casual bites in an open-air space. If you’ve just been playing in the fountain with your dog? No problem. O’Leary’s is dog-friendly as well!

With stunning views, Bayfront Park is the best place to watch the sunset, making it one of the most beautiful things to do in Sarasota at night.

Asolo Repertory Theatre

Asolo Repertory Theatre is unlike other theater centers in Sarasota. It is not a performing arts venue where touring Broadway shows come to perform. Asolo is its own professional theatre company, casting and producing shows of their own choosing and invention.

Asolo Repertory Theatre is the biggest professional theatre company in Florida. They produce about fifteen different productions each season, which typically lasts from fall through the spring of the following year. The company has attracted many Broadway and TV/film stars to perform on their stages like Brad Oscar and Jeremy Jordan.

Asolo Repertory Theatre also has a partnership with the conservatory of Florida State University, offering students a Master of Fine Arts degree in Acting. They also offer classes in-house as well as online.

The center of Sarasota’s fine arts scene, a trip to see a production at Asolo Repertory Theatre is worth a trip, one of the most cultural Sarasota attractions.

Ca D’Zan Mansion

One of the architectural gems of the area, the Ca D’Zan Mansion was the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus co-founder John Ringling. A lover of Venice, Ca D’Zan is Venetian for “House of John.”

The mansion borrows architectural aspects from Ringling’s favorite places in Venice: Doge’s Palace, Ca d’Oro, and the Grunwald Hotel. The marble terraces and bayfront windows echo a Venetian Gothic aesthetic, making a visit one of the most beautiful things to do in Sarasota.

The interior of the former residence is every bit as opulent as the exterior. In the living room, a crystal chandelier from the original Waldorf-Astoria hotel is suspended over a black and white tiled floor. The long dining table seats 22 people. Opulent silver and china are displayed in the butler’s quarters.

One of the United States’ architectural gems, the mansion was used in the filming of Great Expectations directed by Oscar winner Alfonso Cuaron in 1998!

The Ca D’Zan offers self-guided tours of its first floor with tickets at $25 for adults. There are ticket discounts for children and seniors, as well as for military, teachers, and college students. The mansion is open from 10 AM – 5 PM daily, with the exceptions of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.

Sarasota Classic Car Museum

For something off the beaten path, why not pay a visit to a different kind of museum? The Sarasota Classic Car Museum is the second oldest of its kind in the United States! For those who love classic cars, this is one of the best things to do in Sarasota.

The Sarasota Classic Car Museum has the largest “timeline room” which details the history of the automobile from its conception by Karl Benz in 1885 to the present. As you walk through the space learning about the evolution of cars and its major players, you can see artifacts of the automobiles in question.

A showroom has a vast collection of over 75 classic and muscle cars from all of the greatest names including Bentley, Cadillac, Romeo, and Ferrari! Even if you’re not a car person, these restored relics are undeniably beautiful.

The museum is open seven days a week from 9 AM – 6 PM except Christmas Day. Tickets for adults are $14.85 and free for children under the age of five!

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Not quite a zoo, but not quite botanical gardens, Sarasota Jungle Gardens meets somewhere in the middle. Built on the swampy remains of a former banana grove, the Jungle Gardens is a combination of animal and bird sanctuary/botanical gardens.

Sarasota’s favorite family attraction, Sarasota Jungle Gardens is a nature walk where patrons can have up-close experiences with all sorts of wildlife like flamingos, alligators, a variety of birds, small deer.

Guests can wander through sunny paths with sections dappled with shade, surrounded by lush foliage and matured trees. Throughout the path, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in animal feedings within the flamingo and alligator enclosures!

Every day, patrons can attend animal shows including a Multi-Species Animal Show, a Jungle Bird Show, a Wildlife Wonder Show, and a Reptile Show. Children can enjoy a playground area with a koi pond and even enter the petting zoo and meet a new fuzzy friend!

Truly a haven for flora and fauna, Sarasota Jungle Gardens is one of the most fun things to do in Sarasota! Adult tickets are $18, with options for children and seniors. Annual passes are available.

Lido Key Beach

Just adjacent to Siesta Key Beach with a short scenic drive west of Sarasota, Lido Key Beach is a lesser-known hidden gem. One of Florida’s most pristine beaches , it is the ultimate destination for shoppers, sight-seers, and adventurers alike.

Lido Key Beach is a must-visit for fishermen. Grab a bucket of bait and a pole and wade through the water to try your hand at catching snook, whiting, and jacks! Wade further out into the water with a surfboard and catch some waves since Lido Key is a hidden surfing spot!

Walk to the south of the key to the South Lido County Park where picnic tables, grills, and volleyball courts await you. Don’t want to grill yourself? Lido Key is also home to the Columbia Restaurant, an iconic restaurant with roots in Tampa , so go grab a glass of sangria!

Just blocks away from the sand, you can visit St. Armand’s Circle, an elegant center with high-end shops and fine dining restaurants. The metropolitan hub is full of European flair and mid-modern architecture, a scenic haven.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Of all the botanical gardens in Florida , Marie Selby might just take the cake when it comes to sheer beauty. That’s because this paradise in Sarasota is a little bit different.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is the only one in the world dedicated to the preservation and care of epiphytic tropical plants: orchids, bromeliads, and gesneriads. Once entering, the plants truly take the guest to what feels like a completely different part of the world.

Spanning over 45 acres of bayfront sanctuaries, the paths of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens will lead you on a self-guided walking tour through the grounds. At the end of the tour is an outdoor museum with works of the featured artist of the year.

A must as one of the best things to do in Sarasota, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens are open daily from 10 AM – 5 PM. Parking is free, and tickets are $15 for adults. We recommend arriving at opening or earlier in the day, to beat the crowds and the heat.

Sarasota National Cemetery

The Sarasota National Cemetery is one of six in Florida. Resting there are members of the United States Armed Forces who either died while on active duty or died with any discharge condition except dishonorable.

The Patriot Plaza, lined with bronze statues of perched bald eagles, leads to a promenade with a glass overhang that covers a stage used for ceremonies.

The grounds, while beautifully kept out of respect for the fallen, are sobering. Among the headstones are benches for mourners and those wishing to pay their respects. There are also large stone blocks outlining the characteristics of soldiers, like endurance and courage.

Visiting a national cemetery is a very patriotic way to honor our country, and the beauty of the Sarasota National Cemetery only enhances the honor and respect paid to the fallen that rest there.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium

Dedicated to marine life, the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium is first and foremost a research facility, whose aims include conservation of marine ecosystems. Secondly, they are an aquarium open to the publish to share and teach these findings. Visiting is one of the best things to do in Sarasota if you’re looking to learn more about marine life.

Most recently, the Laboratory had a breakthrough in coral reef restoration. Scientists were able to introduce gametes that promote reproduction into colonies of coral reefs in Florida!

Visitors to the aquarium can learn about their efforts by viewing the 135,000-gallon shark tank, or seeing the sea turtles and manatees. Other ecosystem exhibits are teeming with jellyfish and colorful fish!

General admission will not only grant visitors entrance to the aquarium, but also to the Marine Mammal Research and Rehabilitation Center, where you can learn more about what you can do to save our oceans!

The Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is open daily from 9:30 AM – 5 PM, but tickets must be purchased online in advance.

Celery Fields

No, Celery Fields is not literally a farm with fields of celery. Instead, it is one of the most beautiful Sarasota attractions. Celery Fields offers some great Florida hiking .

Celery Fields is actually more than 400 acres of swamps, pools, deep ponds, and canals all inhabited by a variety of Florida wildlife. Plentiful in archeological artifacts, the grounds were once home to early native Floridian settlers.

Located on the Great Florida Birding Trail, surveyors of the area have found at least 246 species of birds, including roseate spoonbills, blue herons, and meadowlarks. This makes Celery Fields an ideal scouting location for birders looking to catch glimpses of rare birds.

Visitors can walk through the fields, now transformed into more traditional wetlands to sustain the ecosystems, on one of two boardwalks. One boardwalk is at the north and one is at the south end of the grounds. Helpful guides are available to give information about any birds seen in the area!

The park is open from 6 AM to sunset every day, and there is no admission fee, so grab your binoculars and check out one of the best things to do in Sarasota!

Circle Drum Distilling

How many places have you visited that have their own brand of alcohol? Add Sarasota to that list with Siesta Key Rum, distilled at Drum Circle Distillery! For those interested in brewing or distilling, this is one of the best things to do in Sarasota

When you visit the Circle Drum facility, you can take a guided tour, usually taking around 45-50 minutes! See the large copper pots that house the rum from fermentation to distillation, and then learn about the benefits of barrel aging.

After seeing how the rum goes from barrel to bottle, you will be released into the tasting room where you can sample the spiced rum in some of the creators’ favorite drink recipes! We recommend arriving 15 minutes early before your tour, you will be greeted with samples!

Beer Can Island

Most of the beaches you’ll find are developed–surrounded by infrastructure and cleaned up. This is not the case for Beer Can Island, as it is completely untamed and undeveloped.

Downed Australian pine trees and driftwood litter the island’s shores. The result is a unique, secluded beach experience, you’ll feel like you’re straight out of the movie Cast Away !

Beer Can Island was named for the empty beer cans left behind by previous boaters. While most people arrive at Beer Can Island by boat, it is possible to walk there from Longboat Key in shallow waters.

If you do go looking for a secluded weekend excursion in this magical hidden gem , be warned, that the island may see more visitors on the weekend. Be sure to bring a hammock to tie around two trees and enjoy!

Kayak Through Mangrove Tunnels

For those who like adventure, one of the best things to do in Sarasota is to try kayaking through Sarasota’s mangrove tunnels. Paddle through blue water and stay in the shade created by the mangrove trees on either side of you.

A guided kayak tour is a great family activity in Sarasota, especially if you haven’t kayaked before! On a kayak tour, you begin your adventure in Ted Sperling Nature Park. From there you can test your equipment in Sarasota Bay before heading into the unique ecosystem of mangrove tunnels.

Keep an eye out for all sorts of wildlife, including the dolphins and manatees that frequent the area!

Owen’s Fish Camp

One of the best things to do in Sarasota is to try the cuisine at local restaurants ! At Owen’s Fish Camp, that cuisine is seafood, of course.

At Owen’s you will be treated to some of the best seafood in the area, with fresh catches coming right from the bay. Enjoy Southern classics like shrimp and grits or whatever the current “Naked Fish” is, depending on the season, with a side of collard greens.

You’ll come to Owen’s Fish Fry for the food, but stay for the atmosphere. Hang out in the backyard under the banyan tree, listen to live music, or chat with the locals.

Just be aware that Owen’s can get quite busy, so get there early to avoid a wait!

Why you should visit Sarasota

Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sarasota has gorgeous beaches and a picturesque cityscape. It was the surprise of our west coast Florida road trip and we loved it so much, we based ourselves there and never ran out of things to do.

I’ve never dreamed of living in America – until I met Sarasota.

Its blue waters ripple, dotted with graceful sailboats. Its museums and cultural centres are world class heavyweights. It’s clean and the sun shines!

Plus, it’s a great base for day trips along the rest of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

We spent as much time here as we could on our Florida Gulf Coast Road Trip , dipping in and out of the museums and gardens, the beaches, the restaurants and the out of town parks.

So, whether you’re travelling alone or with family, you will find plenty to do in Sarasota.

It can take you two days to see Sarasota or two weeks – it depends on how relaxed you want your vacation to be. Generally, 3 to 4 days will give you enough time to see the main attractions, spend a few hours at the beach and do some shopping. 

But if you want to feel the true vibe, sync your heartbeat with the waves and tick off some of the more unusual things to do in Sarasota , reserve at least one week.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Sarasota

Sarasota has something to offer for every season, but spring is considered the best time to visit, spanning from March to May, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C and minimal rainfall. 

Summer is also a great time to book your holiday in Sarasota as prices tend to be lower during this season since there are higher chances of rain.

In autumn, there’s still warm weather, but the possibility of facing a hurricane is higher, so this is a less popular season.

Lastly, during the winter months of December through February, snowbirds flock to Sarasota to escape the cold North. Although it is more expensive during this season, it is still an excellent time to enjoy the beach and explore the flourishing arts scene.

Explore the Region’s Beautiful Beaches and Scenic Parks

Sarasota has plenty of white-sand beaches and lush green spaces, some housing volleyball courts and golf courses where you can unwind under the Florida sun, but there are a few options you really shouldn’t miss:

Siesta Key Beach

This charming beach and shopping area is home to many boutiques, fine dining restaurants, and gift shops. It is a welcoming and approachable mix of tourist-oriented clothing and gifts at affordable prices, along with unique hand-made art and oddities.

There are over 70 points of interest in the Siesta Key village, including the Village Café, The Hub Baja-Grill, Siesta Key Oyster Bar, and many more. Find breakfast options, delicious pan-Latin fare, fresh seafood, live music and drink specials, and other fun eateries. 

Siesta Key also ranks as one of the best beaches in the area, with fine sand and lots of opportunities to swim or snorkel in crystal-clear waters.

And if you head south, there’s Turtle Beach, a small public beach area where sea turtles make their nests. If you are lucky, you may see little turtles finding their way to the sea for the first time.

Lido Key Beach

Lido Key is a small barrier island in Sarasota, Florida, famous for its stunning sunsets and ecotourism. Despite its size, it offers a lot of attractions and activities for visitors.

One of the best things to do here is to visit St. Armands Circle, a popular destination for elegant shopping and outdoor dining experiences. It has over 130 shops, selling everything from art to designer clothing. The place is filled with music from outdoor speakers, and restaurants offer top notch food.

Another popular activity involves taking a Mangrove Kayak Tour, where you can paddle along exotic mangroves, looking out for playful dolphins and manatees. The tour ends with a refreshing swim at the South Lido Beach.

Anna Maria Island

Sarasota acts as a gateway to Anna Maria Island, which is the perfect destination if you want to experience “old” Florida charm, where flip-flops form the backbone to the way of life, and the speed limit never exceeds 35 mph.

Unlike most Florida tourist hotspots, this off-the-beaten-path spot offers a laid-back environment free from high-rise condos and fast-food chains. 

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do on Anna Maria Island, from beachcombing to adrenaline-fueled activities like cycling, zip-lining, and paddling. You can rent stand-up paddleboards or go kayaking, either by renting equipment or joining a guided tour. 

But, by far, the most popular activity here is watching the sunset from the beach while longing for the old days of Florida.

Myakka River State Park

For a spectacular day in the middle of nature, head to Myakka River State Park in Sarasota County. Located on the west side of Florida, this park covers more than 37,000 acres and is home to various wildlife, including alligators, deer, wild pigs, bald eagles, and rare birds like the Roseate Spoonbill. 

The park also has the first public treetop trail built in North America. Plus, you’ll find more than 80 campsites that have electricity, bathrooms, and laundry facilities for nature lovers.

Take the Myakka Canopy Walkway to observe wildlife in the oak trees or spend your day by the scenic river that crosses the park. The internet signal is weak here, so you can get a break from online distractions if that’s something you are looking for.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

The Selby Gardens are the third oldest botanical garden in Florida and also home to the best scientifically documented collection of orchids and bromeliads in the entire world.

The outdoor areas feature exhibits such as the Bonsai exhibit, Cycad display, Fern Garden, towering Bamboo Garden, Banyan Grove, Butterfly Garden, and Koi Pond. There’s also a lovely Children’s Garden where kids can have a blast exploring the fun play areas and paths that take them up across suspension bridges and to cool treehouse-looking sort of buildings. 

The main campus for the surprising Marie Selby Gardens is located just south of downtown Sarasota, Florida, with fantastic views of the bay.

Oscar Scherer State Park

Oscar Scherer State Park is home to the endangered Florida Scrub-Jay and features a rare Florida scrub habitat. The park offers you a chance to swim in the only freshwater lake in Sarasota County and witness nesting bald eagles during winter.

Moreover, you can join a liquid road trip on South Creek to explore the classic Old Florida wilderness via kayak or canoe. For more unique Floridian water experiences, consider swimming with manatees in Crystal River .

Apart from these, the park offers 15 miles of nature trails, including the Florida Scrub Nature Walk and the Lester Finley Barrier-Free Nature Trail. There are also two picnic areas with grills, tables, pavilions, and playgrounds. 

Paddle along South Creek or swim in Lake Osprey, surrounded by trees and birds. The waters are inviting, and there are many spots where you can enjoy a moment of reflection.

South Lido Park

Another green space that is worth visiting in Sarasota is South Lido Park. This protected natural area extends over one hundred acres and is located at the southern end of Lido Key. It’s surrounded by the Brushy Bayou, Big Sarasota Pass, Gulf of Mexico, and Sarasota Bay.

The loop trail in the park is flat, making it ideal for all fitness levels and it offers views of serene, private havens, and mangrove islands. It eventually ends at the sandy road, which leads to Hidden Beach, a secluded area at the northern end of South Lido Beach.

Nathan Benderson Park

A magnificent outdoor destination for health and wellness enthusiasts, the Nathan Benderson Park spans 600 acres of community greenspace and features a 400 acres manmade lake.

With multi-use trails that circle the lake, it offers a great way to spend a day walking, running, biking, or rollerblading while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Nathan Benderson Park is the only venue in North America with a permanent FISA Class A 2,000-meter rowing course, attracting many race events, including international regattas and rowing championships such as the World Rowing Championships.

The park also hosts events such as triathlons, kayak races, and charity events like the Row for the Cure regatta.

Sarasota’s Cultural and Historical Attractions

Sarasota is one of the greatest cultural destinations in the State of Florida, with lots of museums and monuments that will send you back to the Ringling times of glory. If you are a culture lover, here are some great things to explore while there:

Ringling Museum Complex

The Ringling is a must-see destination in the Sarasota area that includes an art museum, a circus museum, and Ca’ d’Zan, a 1920s Venetian-style mansion that was once home to John and Mabel Ringling.

Originally established as the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus, the complex now offers visitors an opportunity to appreciate the finer things in life, learn about circus history, and tour a historic home. The stunning grounds make it easy to spend an entire day exploring the museums.

The Circus Museum houses a detailed model of the Ringling Brothers circus in the 20s and 30s, which is only one of the many fun things to see here, along with the circus’ original wagons and train cars on display.

If you are an art lover, the Venetian-style mansion is quite the sight, and the State Art Museum of Florida, with its 21 galleries, is a magnificent example of Italian Renaissance architecture you shouldn’t miss.

Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy

The Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy is quite an odd attraction, flanked as it is by giant orange and pink flamingos. But it is totally worth visiting. It showcases a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, and mixed artwork from local artists and even some international names.

Plus, you can visit for free. The museum also holds yearly events such as Cookies n’ Cans and Groundbreaking on Groundhog Day, which are quite fun to attend.

Sarasota Classic Car Museum

In Sarasota, you can visit the second oldest antique car museum in the United States that has been continuously operating. Step back in time as you stroll through exhibits that showcase the evolution of the automobile, from its early beginnings to its modern-day counterparts.

The museum features rotating displays of antique, exotic, European, and one-of-a-kind classic cars that can be viewed seven days a week. You can even find the personal collection of Rolls-Royce automobiles owned by circus magnates John and Mable Ringling.

Sarasota Opera House

What about a night at the opera while in Sarasota? Since its establishment in 1984, the Sarasota Opera Company has put on over 70 different operas, with a repertoire including 25 works by Verdi, and its shows are really worth attending.

The company is strongly dedicated to making opera more accessible to all, providing real-time English translations, so you don’t have to worry that you may not understand what’s taking place on the stage.

But even if there’s no show while you are in town, you can still visit the historical theatre that artfully blends the opulent Mediterranean Revival style of the 1920s with contemporary theatre amenities, so stop by for a great history lesson.

Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

From jazz performances to Broadway musicals that are not held on Broadway, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall is the place to be for a fun night out in Sarasota.

Since its establishment in 1970, the hall has hosted notable personalities such as Johnny Cash and Bill Cosby, and it is famous for its distinctive architectural design, inspired by two seashells from the Sea of Japan. 

While here, you can walk along the bayfront and take in the stunning views of Sarasota Bay, Longboat Key, and Lido Key. Additionally, restaurants and bars are only a few blocks away in the direction of downtown. 

A guided tour is also available, providing backstage access, views of the orchestra pit and stage mechanics, and VIP room exploration.

Family Things to do in Sarasota

Sarasota is also a great place for a family vacation, with kid-friendly beaches and several fun attractions to keep everybody entertained. Here’s a list of the places you shouldn’t miss if you are bringing the kids:

Mote Marine Laboratory

For a magical marine-life experience with sea turtles, otters, and manatees, steer the whole family toward the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium on City Island. 

The founder, Dr Eugenie Clark, was inspired by her first visit to an aquarium in New York City when she was only nine years old and she put all her passion into this place, where you can see horseshoe crabs and epaulette sharks.

Save a few hours for this attraction, as it is so beautiful the kids may not want to leave.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

One of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Sarasota is to visit Sarasota Jungle Gardens and enjoy its animal shows, petting zoos, and interactions.

This botanical garden was created in the early 1930s by David Breed Lindsay and Pearson Conrad, who introduced exotic plants and trees, and planned lakes to create this subtropical jungle. Due to its uniqueness, the garden quickly became a popular attraction and started charging admission. 

Despite changing ownership a few times, the garden is still owned and operated by the same family who added exotic birds and animals, making it one of the most impressive attractions in Sarasota.

The Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary

Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary in Sarasota has been a popular attraction for animal enthusiasts and families since 1987. The facility offers care for exotic animals like lions, tigers, bears, and chimpanzees, and hosts bird and big cat shows with educational talks and demonstrations.

If you are travelling with young children, you should definitely check out the petting zoo, which is the perfect place for kids to interact with friendly goats and llamas.

Ed Smith Stadium

For any devoted Baltimore Orioles fan, a trip to the Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota during MLB Spring Training is an absolute necessity.

The stadium’s gorgeous Florida-Spanish architecture blends seamlessly into the established downtown area, and it has distinctive touches that make it a hybrid of its sister stadium, OPACY.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted with installations and wall art that highlight the Orioles’ accomplishments as a franchise. Additionally, the main gate is designed in the same style as the gates found at OPACY. The stadium itself is reminiscent of Orioles Park at Camden Yards, with the same dimensions, trademark green seats, and batter’s eye as the stadium up North.

A massive gift shop is also available, featuring a wide array of Orioles Spring Training exclusive items, including hats, polo shirts, t-shirts, and even golf club covers.

With a seating capacity of 8,500, every seat in the house is a great seat, and you can enjoy Maryland favorites like crab cakes and Esskay hotdogs while basking in the Florida sunsets.

Great places to eat

Sarasota prides itself on its award-winning restaurants and diversity of culinary dishes. Expect to find plenty of seafood and other locally sourced ingredients.

Here’s our recommendations:

• Owen’s Fish Camp – a rustic seafood shack that’s known for its fresh seafood and Southern hospitality. The menu features classic dishes like shrimp and grits, fried catfish, and oysters Rockefeller, all of which are made with locally sourced ingredients.
• Shore Diner – located in the St. Armands Circle shopping district, Shore is one of the best restaurants in the region, with a stunning outdoor patio. Besides the delicious seafood dishes, their cocktails are also a highlight, with creative takes on classic drinks.
• Yoder’s Restaurant – for a taste of traditional Southern cuisine, Yoder’s Restaurant is a must-visit. This family-owned establishment is famous for its homemade pies – the chocolate cream and key lime are fan favourites.
• The Rosemary – the Rosemary is a cosy neighbourhood bistro that serves up classic American comfort food with a twist. Their menu features dishes like mac and cheese with truffle oil, braised short ribs, and a daily selection of house-made pasta. 
• Columbia Restaurant – a family-owned restaurant that has been a Sarasota landmark since 1959. It specialises in Spanish and Cuban cuisine, and its menu features dishes like paella, ropa vieja, and their famous “1905” salad. 

Cool shopping options

From the famous Sarasota farmers market to upscale boutiques, there’s always something for sale in the region. However, the most remarkable shopping destination remains St. Armands Circle, also known as the “Jewel of Sarasota.”

The island was initially bought by Charles St. Amand for $21.71 in 1893 and became St. Armands Key. Circus magnate John Ringling purchased the island in 1917 and financed the construction of the John Ringling Causeway, which connects Sarasota to St. Armands. 

At the heart of St. Armands Circle is a park dedicated to John Ringling’s legacy, featuring a Circus Ring of Fame and marble statue from Ringling’s collection.

A visit to St. Armands involves shopping at high-end and boutique stores, dining at legendary restaurants, or pampering yourself at The Met, an independent luxury fashion house with a day spa and salon.

Where can you go from Sarasota?

Sarasota is also a great starting point for visiting some beautiful nearby destinations. We really enjoyed discovering the following towns:

• Venice – if you are in good shape, take the 10.6-mile paved Legacy Trail that runs from Sarasota to Venice along the former CSX railroad corridor. You can either jog or take a bike and enjoy the beautiful scenery on your way. Venice will reward your efforts with gondolas and plentiful Italian food.
• Fort Myers – this historic town includes the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, as well as a museum with exhibits about their inventions and innovations.
• Tarpon Springs – if you want a taste of Greece in Florida, head to Tarpon Springs, which is about an hour and a half from Sarasota. This historic town is known for its Greek culture, sponge diving, and authentic Greek food.

UPDATE: Auburn Football Running Back injured in deadly Sarasota shooting

According to the Auburn University Athletic website, Tommie L. Battie IV is listed as a relative to Auburn University Running Back Brian Battie.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WTVM) - According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, an early Saturday morning shooting in Sarasota, FL has left one person dead and several others injured.

Deputies responded to the 3400 block of 17th Street (Tallywood Centre Plaza) around 3:30 a.m. where officials observed a large crowd with multiple shooting victims in the parking lot. They say one of the victims - later identified as 24-year-old Tommie L. Battie IV - was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials also confirmed that Brian Battie was injured in the shooting - his condition is unknown at this time.

Four additional victims were transported to local hospitals in both Manatee and Sarasota counties - their conditions are also unknown at this time.

Officials say the incident appears to be isolated - stay with us as we continue to gather more information.

Rowing Heads to Sarasota for First Big 12 Championship

ORLANDO – The UCF rowing team will head to Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, for the third and final time this season to compete in the 2024 Big 12 Championship. Action is slated to begin Sunday at 9 a.m. and will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with live results posted on  HereNow .

In their first Big 12 Championship, the Knights will face three teams currently ranked among the Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll, including the nation’s No. 1 team and reigning Big 12 Champion Texas, No. 5 Tennessee and No. 19 Alabama. The Knights come into the weekend receiving 120 votes, three sports outside of the top 20.

“All of the work that we put in this season has come down to this weekend,” head coach Mara Allen said. “The teams we are facing have gotten better as the season has gone on, so it is going to be tough competition. I’m excited for how the team is going to fight and how they will set the tone for the future.”

The Big 12 Championship features six boats competing on Saturday morning with the III Four opening the racing slate with a tentative start time of 9 a.m. Following behind, the III Eight will race at 9:15 a.m. followed by the II Four at 9:30 a.m. and the I Four at 9:45 a.m. The II Eight races at 10 a.m. and the I Eight will close out the day, racing at 10:15 a.m.

Following the races, an award ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Final placement for teams is determined by a point system varied by each boat’s finish, except for the III Four, who will race as an exhibition.

State College of Florida grad wins inaugural Virginia B. Toulmin Leadership Scholarship

State College of Florida grad wins Toulmin award

Zuleima Martinez of Sarasota was recently named the inaugural winner of the Virginia B. Toulmin Leadership Scholarship by Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

Martinez, who graduated on May 3 with an associate’s degree from State College of Florida with a 3.72 GPA, will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications at the University of South Florida in Tampa this fall. The scholarship includes a $15,000 award.

The Toulmin Leadership Scholarship is a merit-based award aimed at encouraging female students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievements and leadership qualities. Selby Gardens president and CEO Jennifer Rominiecki is the scholarship’s first mentor. The scholarship aims to provide a pathway for female leadership in the business and nonprofit world by providing mentorship, opportunities to observe leadership in action, and financial support to high-achieving juniors or seniors pursuing bachelor’s degrees and holding a minimum GPA of 3.5.

“Zuleima is a truly exceptional young woman who emulates the ideals of the Virginia B. Toulmin Leadership Scholarship," Rominiecki said. "She is extremely inspiring and exudes high scholastic aptitude, as well as outstanding leadership qualities.”

In addition to mentoring sessions from Rominiecki, Martinez will be appointed to Selby Gardens Advisory Committee, participating with community, scientific and business leaders, and also receive a one-year membership to Selby Gardens.

Choral Artists of Sarasota plans Memorial Day concert

Choral Artists of Sarasota will conclude its 45th season on Memorial Day with “United We Stand,” a concert commemorating the legacy of the women and men of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The May 26 performance will feature a tribute to the 80th commemoration of the D-Day Normandy invasion of World War II. The Lakewood Ranch Wind Ensemble under the direction of Joe Martinez will also perform with Choral Artists.

"We honor all Americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending freedom and liberty around the world," said Joseph Holt, artistic director. "As Choral Artists has been invited to participate in the 80th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremonies of D-Day in Normandy, France, this June, there will be a poignant musical reflection of the thousands of servicemen who gave their lives on that fateful day.”

Booker High student earns WCA fine arts scholarship

Sophia Cavalluzzi, a senior at Booker High School, was honored recently with the 2024 Women Contemporary Artists Scholarship. Cavalluzzi will be continuing her studies at Parsons School of Design majoring in product design.

Working in 2- and 3-D materials, Cavalluzzi's work is inspired by taking “childlike abstractions into fruitions and sophisticated innovation and possibility.” Jeffrey Cornwell, one of her instructors at Booker, said she “knows what she wants and has her own clear voice. When there is an opportunity to learn, she acts on it and seeks to better herself by self-initiative and with enthusiasm.”

Manatee teacher is named Crystal Apple Award finalist

Debra Cline, a sixth-grade digital arts teacher at Manatee School For the Arts in Palmetto, was a recent finalist for the 2024 Crystal Apple Award, which celebrates inspirational teachers from around the country.

Each year students, parents, administrators, fellow teachers, family, and friends nominate teachers who go above and beyond to touch the lives of students. Cline was one of 10 finalists from more than 600 nominees. The winners were from schools in Harrisburg, Pa., Uvalde, Texas, and Mansfield, Ohio.

Sarasota Chorus of the Keys awards college scholarships

The Sarasota Chorus of the Keys recently awarded more than $6,000 in Sheridan E. Brown Memorial Scholarships to Troy Ashby of Sarasota High School and Caleb Blocker of Riverview for outstanding musical achievements.

The Chorus of the Keys, a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, has been awarding college scholarships to deserving students for more than 20 years. Jeffry Olesen served as the scholarship committee chairman.

Indiana 2025 Commit Sets Up Official Visit with Michigan State

Coach Jonathan Smith and Michigan State continue to build upon a productive week. The Spartans had a difficult start to the offseason, during which many notable players entered the transfer portal simultaneously. 

When the mass exodus began, the number of Spartans entering the transfer portal seemed never-ending. However, Coach Smith and Michigan State gradually rebuilt their roster, which lost significant talent. 

After signing multiple players from the transfer portal over the last few weeks, Coach Smith and the Spartans now have an official visit set up with one of the highest-rated Big Ten players in the transfer portal. Michigan State has set an official visit with cornerback Chris McCorkle for June 14-16.

McCorkle announced the visit on X, formerly known as Twitter.

McCorkle, a native of Sarasota, Florida, is currently committed to the Spartans’ Big Ten opponent, Indiana. The cornerback is one of the best in his recruiting class. According to 247Sports, McCorkle is the 25th-best cornerback and 246th-best overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. 

Should he commit, Michigan State's official visit with McCorkle could be a big move for the Spartans. He would be one of the best signings of Coach Smith’s young tenure in East Lansing and another domino to fall for the Spartans on the recruiting trail. After a slow start, the addition of McCorkle, with the other signings Michigan State has made over the last few days, would be a significant victory for Coach Smith. 

Although McCorkle has set his official visit with Michigan State, he has offers from nearly 30 nationwide programs, including multiple Big Ten teams. According to 247Sports, Iowa, Indiana, Florida and Kansas have offered him scholarships.

Coach Smith and the Spartans are gaining traction on the recruiting trail and the transfer portal. Continued signings of talented players will only gain the attention of other talented players looking for new football programs to play for. Michigan State still has one of the worst 2025 recruiting classes in the Big Ten.

However, all parties involved understand turning around a college program doesn’t happen overnight. The slow process of a rebuild is why the signing of McCorkle would be such a big deal for the Spartans. Not to mention, they’d be taking him away from a conference opponent.

It would be a win for many reasons.
