15 Best Things to Do in Bimini on a Cruise [Port Guide]

If you’re visiting Bimini on a cruise, you’re in luck! In fact, many avid cruisers consider Bimini the most beautiful island in the Bahamas.

Located approximately 55.6 nautical miles from Miami, Bimini is the closest point in the Bahamas to the mainland of the United States. Bimini is known for its white sand beaches, crystal clear water, and marine life.

There are many great ways to spend your day visiting Bimini. Whether you want to relax on the beach, snorkel, or go on a jetski adventure, there is something for everyone. Recently, we visited Bimini and had an amazing time!

In this Bimini cruise port guide, I share best things to do in Bimini, Bahamas as a cruise traveller. I’ve also included information you’ll want to know before you visit this Bahamian island.

Bimini Cruise Port

The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise port that accommodates the world’s largest cruise ships and vessels of all sizes. The cruise port is within walking distance of the Resorts World Bimini Complex.

Since this is a newer cruise port, the pier is charming and less developed. Unlike other Caribbean cruise destinations, which house popular cruise port shops including Diamonds International, this isn’t the case with Bimini. Instead, there are local shops to purchase souvenirs and crafts.

Bimini cruise port can accommodate two cruise ships at a time, making this island a nice change from busier ports of call. Cruise passengers can take a taxi, a shuttle service, or use a tour guide to visit the island.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Bimini Cruise Port

The Bahamian dollar ($BSD) is the official currency for the Bahamas. However, U.S. currency is widely accepted and usually given as change in the Bahamas.

In Bimini, the majority of businesses and restaurants accept U.S. cast of credit cards. Furthermore, local vendors will accept U.S. money when you’re shopping for souvenirs.

English is the official language of the Bahamas. However, locals may speak Bahamianese or Creole. For the most part, everyone speaks and understands English in Bimini.

Since Bimini is located in the Bahamas, it operates on Eastern Standard Time. Furthermore, the cruise ship’s time will be the same as the time on land.

Typically, when you visit Bimini, the temperatures range from 60 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. However, the breeze from the ocean makes it feel a bit cooler.

The water temperatures vary between 77 degrees in the middle of winter and 87 degrees in the summer.

Getting Around Bimini

Although Bimini is only 7 miles long, there are a few ways to get around the island.

Here are a few ways you can get around Bimini:

Resorts World Tram

The Resorts Worlds tram service operates every 30 minutes and makes several stops around the Island. In fact there’s a stop right within short walking distance at the cruise port.

The tram is completely free and available for anyone to use. However, keep in mind that it will only take you to the Resort World properties, where you can visit the casino, beach, resorts, and restaurants.

You’ll find the free pick-up location right outside your cruise ship. It’s easy to find the pick-up location, and many people use the tram when visiting Bimini.

When you visit Bimini, there will be taxi services available. The taxi rates vary depending on where you want to go, but the common fare is between $5-$10 per person. Since the cruise port is the midway point of the island, the southern and northern parts are equal distances from the pier.

By Golf Cart

There are a few golf cart rental companies that operate in Bimini. They charge approximately $90 per day for a four-seater and $120 for a six-seater. Golf cart rentals are a great way to explore the beautiful island.

Tip: I have heard from other cruisers that there may be some room to negotiate prices.

If you want to stay close to the cruise port, you can always walk to your destination. Bimini is a small island and is very walkable!

The Resorts World Hilton resort is a 10-15 minute walk from the cruise ship. Bring water if you plan to walk because it can be very hot in Bimini.

Best Things To Do In Bimini, Bahamas on a Cruise

1. beach club 360.

Beach Club 360 is a private beach resort owned by Resorts World. You’ll find 2 large pools, a gorgeous white sand beach, bars and restaurants, beach games, lounge chairs, and crystal-clear waters.

Beach Club 360 is one of the most popular shore excursions offered by cruise lines. Lounge chairs and facilities are included. However there may be some extra costs to rent cabanas at the pool and beach resort.

The price varies depending on which cruise line you’re sailing with. However prices range between approximately $39-$99 a day, depending on what is included.

Virgin Voyages Exclusive Beach Club

If you’re visiting Bimini on a Virgin Voyages cruise , Beach Club 360 is included and becomes a “private island” type destination. Your transportation, lunch, wifi, and entry are all included in your cruise fare.

When we visited Bimini on our recent Virgin Voyages cruise, we spent the day at Beach Club 360. It was an all-day party with a live DJ, and the food was amazing, which made for a perfect day in Bimini.

2. Shipwreck Exploration Adventure

If you’re adventurous, then taking a trip to the SS Sapona shipwreck is a great option. The SS Sapona is a World War I ship that ran aground during a hurricane in 1926.

The wreck sits in 15 feet of water. Visitors will either scuba dive or snorkel around the shipwreck. This is a popular attraction for scuba divers, history buffs, and adventure seekers.

3. Jet Ski Tour

When it comes to exciting shore excursions, its hard to beat a Jet Ski tour. Taking a guided tour on jet skis around the island is an unforgettable experience and tons of fun!

Oftentimes, the jet ski tour can be booked through the cruise line. If you plan on booking a jet ski tour, it’s a good idea to book it in advance as it will sell out.

4. Dolphin House Museum

The Dolphin House Museum is roughly an 8-minute drive from the cruise pier. The Dolphin House Museum is unique because it was built over the last 27 years using recycled, salvaged, and donated materials by award-winning Bahamian author and historian Ashley Saunders.

If you’re looking to visit the Dolphin House Museum, it costs $10 per person.

5. Snorkel Tours

If you’re adventurous and love to snorkel, then you’ll enjoy Bimini. When it comes to snorkeling, Bimini has amazing reefs, marine life, and places to explore!

Here are the most popular locations for snorkelling in Bimini:

• Rainbow Reef
• Victory Reef
• Bimini Wall

Rainbow Reef is a great snorkeling location for beginners. Here, you will see turtles, fish, and other marine life. Many shore excursions visit Rainbow Reef, which is perfect for snorkelers of all levels.

Victory Reef is an interesting place to snorkel. Here, you will see marine life and underwater terrain.

The amazing thing about Victory Reef is that you can see the seafloor drop into the Straits of Florida. At Victory Reef, you’ll see fish, turtles, and nurse sharks.

Bimini Wall is one of Bimini’s greatest mysteries. The wall stretches for more than half a mile, and it was discovered over 50 years ago.

The Bimini Wall is also known as Atlantis Road, Bimini Road, or Road to Atlantis. Nobody knows how or what this submerged manmade structure really is, which is why it is such a mystery to locals.

6. Resorts World Pool & Beach Experience

Resorts World Pool & Beach Experience is an adult-only 750-acre luxurious resort. Here, you will find restaurants, bars, casinos, the beach, and pools.

Most cruise lines offer excursions to Resorts World. When you purchase the excursion through the cruise line, you’ll get access to an open bar, pool chairs and umbrellas, beach chairs, and access to the pools, casinos, and other amenities.

If you want to relax at a luxurious resort, you’ll love the Resorts World Pool & Beach Experience.

7. Island Bike Tour

The Island Bike Tour is a great way to explore the island and better understand what life is like in Bimini. You’ll be given a bike, helmet, and lock on this excursion.

On this tour, you’ll ride through Fisherman’s Village, Alice Town, and Bailey Town. You’ll get to visit the Dolphin House, Bimini Museum, and the Methodist Church graveyard.

Overall, this is a great way to visit Bimini, take some stunning videos, and learn more about the wonderful island.

8. Bimini Craft Center

The Bimini Craft Center is a great place to go if you’re looking for souvenirs or purchasing local crafts. The craft center is located in the heart of Alice Town, which is an 8-minute cab ride from the cruise port.

You will find 17 booths filled with locally-made crafts, t-shirts, hats, and other souvenirs here. You’ll also get the chance to interact with the friendly Bahamians, which is a great way to learn about the local culture.

The Bimini Craft Center has restrooms, free Wi-Fi, and food trucks. Going to the craft center is a fun activity, and it’s near many other attractions.

9. Stingray Encounter

The stingray encounter is the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure. You’ll go to a secluded beach called Honeymoon Harbor for this excursion. Here, you’ll be in calm, crystal clear waters, which are home to friendly stingrays.

You’ll be able to sit back and enjoy the sun while the stingrays swim up and interact with you. This is a great way to learn about stingrays and create life-long memories.

10. Bimini Island Food Tasting Experience Tour

If you’re a foodie, then you’ll love the Bimini Island Food Tasting Experience Tour. On this excursion, your tour guide will bring you to some of the best restaurants in Bimini.

You’ll get to try Bahamian cuisine like conch fritters, peas and rice, and baked macaroni. You’ll quench your thirst by drinking Gully Wash and Bahamian soft drinks.

When you’re on this tour, you’ll stop at CJ’s Deli and Joe’s Conch Shack, popular restaurants locals love. This food tour is a great way to explore the island while experiencing Bahamian cuisine.

Free Things to Do in Bimini:

11. kayak beach.

Kayak Beach is the closest beach to the cruise port. If you want to visit Kayak Beach, you can walk there or take the tram. It’s a 2 minute walk from the cruise ship, or it’s the first tram stop.

We found out about Kayak Beach through the crew members. When they visit Bimini, Kayak Beach is there go-to beach.

At Kayak Beach, you can rent a Kayak, lounge chairs, and relax in the calm waters. Overall, Kayak Beach is a great option for those who want to spend the day at the beach, while staying near the cruise ship.

12. Radio Beach

Radio Beach is a free local beach with beautiful turquoise waters. If you’re looking for something “off the beaten path,” you’ll love Radio Beach.

At Radio Beach, you can rent a cabana or lounge chairs. Furthermore, there are local restaurants and bars nearby. If you look into the ocean, you may see marine life like stingrays and dolphins.

You can get from the cruise port to Radio Beach by taxi, and when you are ready to leave, there will be taxis ready to take you back.

Overall, Radio Beach is a great place to spend the day when you visit Bimini.

13. Fountain of Youth

In the 1500s, explorer Juan Ponce de León learned that Bimini was the site of the Fountain of Youth. According to an old legend, the spring water supposedly restored youth to those who drank or bathed in the water.

In 1513, Ponce De León set sail from Puorto Rico to Bimini. Unfortunately, he could never find the fountain of youth in Bimini, but he did go on to discover Florida and the Gulf Stream instead.

Today, you can visit a natural wellspring that the locals claim to be the fountain of youth. The locals believe that the mineral water from the springs brings good health and youth to those who drink it.

14. Visit The Bimini Museum

Built in 1921, the Bimini Museum was once the Commissioner’s Office and jail. However, it was abandoned in 1974. In 1999, the building was restored by Sir Michael and Lady Barbara Checkly.

Now, the Bimini Museum contains historical artifacts, such as photographs of Ernest Hemingway and old cannon balls. There is no entry fee for the Bimini Museum. However, they do accept donations.

15. War Memorial and Hero’s Park

The War Memorial and Hero’s Park is located in Alice Town, which is right next to the Dolphin House Museum. The memorial is an 8-minute drive from the cruise port, and it honours the war veterans from World War I and II.

When you visit the War Memorial, you’ll be nearby other attractions, and you’ll get an amazing view of the ocean.

Bimini Cruise Port Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Bimini is a new port in the Bahamas that should quickly become a favorite of cruisers for its easy access to beaches and activities. There are however a few tricks to getting the most for your money in Bimini.

Arrival at the Pier in Bimini Bahamas

Your ship will dock at the pier and you’ll be able to walk right into the port. It is a flat and wide pier, with plenty of room for all passengers.

At the end of the pier you’ll come to a parking lot that acts as a pickup station for the island tram, which is run by Resorts World. The tram is free and will take you to most of the Resorts World properties and activities. You should plan on riding the tram.

You could also walk across the bridge into town for direct access to Kayak Beach, Fisherman’s Village, golf cart rentals, and taxis, but the tram also stops at Kayak Beach and Fisherman’s village. Unless you really just like walking in the heat, take the tram to one of those stops if you are wanting to go there.

Many people were making that walk, likely because it looks like the tram is only for passengers on shore excursions, but we confirmed with staff that it is free for everyone.

Kayak Beach Bimini

The first stop on the tram is Kayak Beach. The water here is not as good as the upcoming beaches, and there is no reason to get off here unless you just want to get to the beach as quickly as possible. You could also pick up a taxi at this stop. As noted by the lack of people in the picture, there are better beaches to come!

Fisherman’s Village

The 2nd tram stop is Fisherman’s Village, which is mostly shopping. If you’d like to get a few gifts from the Bimini Cruise Port, this is the place to do it.

Resorts World Bimini Beach

The third stop for the tram is Resorts World Bimini Beach. We booked a shore excursion, which is basically a day pass to the resort for $39 on our cruise ship. Included in that price was a welcome drink, but no lunch. Many people will get off at this stop as it is the same stop as Beach 360.

Resorts World is amazing, with crystal clear water and resort style pools, food and restrooms. It is everything you could ask for in a day at the beach. Deck chairs and umbrellas were provided by the pool at no cost and there was no trouble finding an open spot as the resort is large.

If you are looking for the best beach and want access to facilities, this is the place you should go.

There was an option on our cruise to book the resort with lunch included for an extra $25. The price seemed high and this was confirmed by looking at the menu once we got there. All meals were $15, so it was a $10 markup by the cruise ship on lunch. Skip the included lunch and just buy what you would like when you get there.

Resorts World Bimini Beach has two resort style pools, one for adults only and one for families. We found neither to be crowded and there were great places to sit all around.

Another option you might be tempted by is the pool cabana. These seemed like they were really overpriced at $399, we didn’t see anyone in them the entire time we were there.

Your excursion will include a welcome drink, and you do need to pick it up on arrival, but don’t get too excited about it. The voucher is not good for any drink you want at the bar.

Bimini Cruise Port Best Free Beach

The best free option is Paradise Beach, which is located directly next to the Resorts World Beach. In fact while at Resorts World Bimini Beach we walked up to Paradise Beach because it was much less crowded.

To reach Paradise Beach, get off at the stop after Resorts World. You’ll have access to a free beautiful beach, and food trucks, but no resort amenities. The main downfall to this beach is there is nowhere to wash off the saltwater after going in the water, but an excursion here would be completely free.

Our cruise was offering an excursion to Paradise Beach with a snorkel for $75 per person. The beach and tram are free though, so you are basically renting a snorkel for $75!

Where you go on Bimini will come down to if you want restrooms and a resort freshwater pool, and if you are willing to pay $39 for that. If you want that, go to Resorts World Bimini Beach, if not, go to Paradise Beach for free.

Resorts World Casino

On the way back to the ship the tram will stop at Resorts World Casino (and Fisherman’s Village again). Get off here if you’d like to play in a casino during your Bimini Cruise Port stop.

The weather in Bimini is subtropical with pleasant temperatures year round. The average summer temps are in the 80°F and the winter sees temperatures of 70°F. The Bahamas rainy season runs from May to October, with June and October being the wettest months.

The currency used is the Bahamian dollar but U.S. currency is accepted and also given as change. ATMs around the resort have high service fees, so avoid them if you can. Credit cards are accepted at a few businesses like Bimini Undersea, Resorts World Bimini and Edith’s Pizza.

Wireless Internet:

There are several restaurants and businesses in Alice Town that have WiFi, and most are free. They can be password protected, and you are expected to purchase something from the business.

Bahamian Creole and English are spoken on the island, so there is not usually any difficulty conversing with locals or with vendors.

Where You Dock in Bimini – Bahamas

Formerly there had been a tender boat system that met cruise ships that would dock offshore and bring visitors to the island but The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise terminal that can hold the largest cruise ships such as the Oasis.

There is a wide pier that has plenty of room for all passengers that choose to disembark.  There is a customs and immigration service at the pier also, but other than that, you’ll notice it isn’t as overdeveloped as other cruise ports, so no Diamond’s International (at least not yet). The great thing is that there’s only room for one ship to be docked at a time, so it never feels overcrowded.

Within the Resorts World property there is a beach club, spa, casino, restaurants and Fisherman’s Village, a shopping area.

The dock is located north of the island’s main settlement – Alice Town – where you will find some restaurants and shops. If you wish to visit, it’s not walkable from the port, so you’ll need a form of transportation.

Getting Around Bimini – Bahamas

The Resorts World Hilton is about a 10 minute walk from the pier but if you’re staying on the Resorts World property, then there is a complementary tram that travels throughout the resort. The walk to the beach club is about 20 minutes.

Getting outside Resorts World on foot isn’t feasible and unless you are in Alice Town or Bailey Town, walking around North Bimini would be a challenge since places in Bimini are miles apart.

The main rental transportation on North Bimini is golf carts. You can rent them by the hour or the day right at Resorts World. If you take the tram to Paradise Beach, you can rent a golf cart there for $60/day. Beware that you will be sharing the single lane roads with cars, bikes and people. The roads in Bimini are about 1.5 times wider than single lane roads in the U.S., but there are no middle divider lanes. Driving is on the left side of the road.

Bike rentals are also available at Resorts World where you can rent a bike by the hour, half-day or full-day. There are no sidewalks in Bimini, so you will share the road.

There are only a few roads in Bimini, and a ferry is the only way to get between the North and South Islands. It is $10 pp each way.

There is taxi service on the island, but there are no ridesharing services or apps. To secure a taxi, you will need to flag one down on the street (they accept cash only), get a shop to telephone one, or request a dispatch via the radio channel (VHF 68) that is dedicated to taxis. The fare to most common locations is $5 per person.

The Resorts Worlds tram operates on a 30 minute rotating schedule and will take you from the ship, but the service operates between Resorts World properties only.

Shopping In Bimini – Bahamas

As previously mentioned, Bimini isn’t as overdeveloped as other Bahamian or Caribbean tourist locales, so you won’t find the name-brand stores, but there are unique, local items to discover.

Just a point to note, since it’s a small island and everything needs to be imported, products will likely be more costly than you will find in the U.S..

Fisherman’s Village

Located at Resorts World, this is set up to be charming with various shops, cafes and dockmaster’s office.

Access Bahamas Bimini

Best place for souvenirs. Not all items are made by locals, but if you are looking for something to remember your visit, this is the place.

Bimini Craft Center & Straw Market

In Alice Town, this craft center has original straw, wood carvings and craft work of the islanders. Set up in stalls, you will be able to find tie-dye apparel and food items, including the famous Bimini coconut bread. There is also WiFi access and restrooms onsite.

Trev Inn Marketplace has a large selection of groceries and local produce.

The Chic Store

If you are looking for a bathing suit, flip flops or water bottles, you will be able to find them here.

Dining In Bimini – Bahamas

As you would expect on an island in the Bahamas, Bimini has an abundance of seafood options. Restaurants are very casual and you can expect fresh seafood and Bahamian flavors.

Conch, a small sea snail, is a favorite that you will find at most of the eateries that have seafood. Conch is salty, but does not have a strong taste. It can be similar to crab or crayfish.

The two most popular drinks on the islands are Goombay Smash and Rum Runners. The Smash has four different types of rum, pineapple juice and orange juice. The Runners are an assortment of fruit juices, banana liquor, rum and grenadine.

Here are a few of the choices for dining you will have on Bimini:

Hilton at Resorts World Bimini

There are 10 restaurants, cafes and bars in the Hilton including four diverse fine dining venues.

Stuart’s Conch Stand

This beachside wooden hut is a favorite with locals and serves mainly seafood.

Edith’s Pizza

Edith makes lobster and chicken-conch pizza to name a few. This is all outdoor seating.

Scants Jerk

While this looks like a shack, it has amazing BBQ and smoked meats. Jerk chicken and pork, and smoked lobster are just a few of the items served here.

Sherry’s Paradise Beach Bar

This small family-run kitchen is said to have the best conch fritters on the island.

Things To Do in Bimini – Bahamas

As mentioned, the cruise terminal is located in Resorts World, so there are resort-style amenities such as a beach club, spa and casino available for a fee – usually the ship’s excursions will have a few options for Resorts World.

Swim With The Sharks

If you would like a unique experience, you could head to Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina and dive in a cage while the sharks swim around you.

Visit the Wreckage of the SS Sapona

Although it never saw action in WW1, the SS Spano was commissioned by U.S. President Wilson. After the war it was sold for scrap, turned into a casino and supply ship and was run aground during a hurricane. Just a little ways off-shore, this wreckage is a great place to snorkel or scuba dive.

Rainbow Reef – Bahamas

This protected marine sanctuary has depths that range from 15 to 25 feet, making it ideal for snorkeling.

Hit The Beaches

There are numerous beaches on Bimini, near the Bimini Cruise Port. Located on the southwestern side of North Bimini behind Alice Town, there are Radio beach, Blister beach, and Spook Hill. There are also beaches to the north of the Bimini cruise port.

Dolphin House Museum

This building is made of different materials that were collected from all over the islands. Open since 1993, it is an interesting site that is covered in a mosaic of shells, glass, and coins.

Bimini Brown Charters

These charters are experts on the waters around Bimini. If you are wanting a private charter, sport fishing or snorkeling excursions, they have been operating for over thirty years.

Bimini Nature Hiking Trail

There is lots to learn about the ecology, wildlife, and history of the Bimini island. Led by a professional tour guide, you’ll see birds, iguanas and the Bimini Boa on this tour.

Bimini Cruise Port: Everything You Need To Know

A new port joins Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas, giving cruisers more of a selection when choosing a Bahamian itinerary.

In July 2021, Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port welcomed its first cruise ship when  Crystal Serenity  docked with cruise passengers. Four days later, Carnival Cruise Line made its first call there with Carnival Horizon.

Located 55 nautical miles off the coast of Miami, the Bimini Islands is primarily a beach destination with some added history tours sprinkled in. With a total population of under 2,000 people living there, it’s practically untouched, with the exception of a few resorts.

Bimini is actually made up of two islands, North and South Bimini. The cruise port is on North Bimini, and the airport is on South Bimini. You can take a quick ride between the two islands with the local ferry service at $8 per person each way.

The island is 62 miles south of Grand Bahama Island, 127 miles northwest of Nassau, 77 miles from West Palm Beach, and 58 miles from Port Everglades.

This island was called Virgin Voyages’ private resort destination . However, Virgin is only utilizing a beach and beach club on Bimini, which is open to other cruise passengers when a Virgin ship is not there.

Pier Location

The Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port is a new cruise port that can now hold the largest cruise ships, such as Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class vessels (225,000 gross tons).

The ship docks in East Bimini. The pier was originally built for the now-defunct Bimini Superfast but was recently expanded to accommodate the world’s largest cruise vessels.

There’s a charm to the pier because it’s so new to major cruise lines, and it hasn’t been developed or overrun by Caribbean staple shops like Diamonds International.

Aside from cruise ships, high-speed ferry service from Balearia Caribbean also makes stops there, running routes from Fort Lauderdale to North Bimini Island.

Being right off the coast of South Florida, there isn’t much difference in the weather. You can expect the same weather as you would in Miami, Florida (so pack shorts!).

The temperatures range from around 60 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the dead of summer. Even with the humidity, the breeze off the ocean tends to make it feel a bit cooler.

The water temperatures average between 77 degrees in the winter and 87 degrees in the summer.

Legal tender is the Bahamian dollar ($BSD), but US currency is accepted and usually given as change in the Bahamas. If paying in cash, make sure to confirm you’re getting a change in US currency.

There are ATM machines around the resorts, but expect to pay a steep service fee to access them. Credit cards and digital payments are also accepted at most locations on the island, especially at the large resorts.

Getting Around

Even though the island is only seven miles long, you may want to find a way to get around.

A Resorts Worlds tram service makes select stops around the island and operates every 30 minutes. These trams have marked pick-up locations and will take you to different Resorts World properties from the cruise ship. (Note: they only operate between Resorts World properties.)

Anyone can use the Resorts World tram. Just keep in mind it will take you to one of their properties where you can go to a casino, beach, or eat.

Taxi rates will vary by where you want to go, but the common fare was $5 per person to most locations. The cruise pier is at the midway point of the island, so it’s equal distance to both the northern and southern areas.

By Golf Cart

A couple of golf cart rental companies on the island charge around $90 per day for a four-seater and $120 per day for a six-seater. With little traffic on the island, it’s an easy and stress-free way to explore on your own timetable.

If you’re sticking close to the pier, you can obviously walk to your destination. The Resorts World Hilton is about a 10-minute walk from the ship.

To explore beyond that, however, you’ll want to find a form of transportation — if only because of the heat!

As I mentioned earlier, one charm of Bimini is that it hasn’t been overdeveloped, especially when it comes to the area around the pier. As it becomes more popular in the coming years, that’s likely to change, but for now, it’s one of the things that makes this port so appealing.

A small market with a few shops is just south of the cruise pier. Otherwise, you’re limited to shopping at one of the Resorts World properties if you’re looking to pick up a souvenir.

While shopping for basic necessities, keep in mind that you are on an island with limited resources, so items in the resort gift shops tend to be on the pricey side as they all have to be imported from the mainland.

What To Do in Bimini

Bimini is primarily a beach destination that focuses on water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming with sharks, and jet skiing.

If you want to explore on your own, you can rent a golf cart or set out with food (and plenty of water to stay hydrated) and explore the island.

Cruise lines offer around a dozen shore excursions in Bimini, but if you’re looking for something a little different, we’ve listed some things to do in the area. If this is your first time visiting Bimini, here are some suggestions.

Local Beaches

Some of the quietest and best beaches in Bimini run together on the southwestern side of the island in Alice Town: Radio Beach, Blister Beach, and Spook Hill.

There is also a string of beaches north of the resort area’s cruise port. Keep in mind that you’ll be required to pay a fee if you’d like to use a sun chair, resort facilities, pool, or a lounger.

Beach Club 360

Typically sold by the cruise line, this new private beach package is good if you’re looking to spend a day at the beach. Located right next to Resorts World Bimini Beach, the stretch of beach has some of the clearest turquoise waters in the Bahamas.

The club has options to rent cabanas, umbrellas, and beach chairs. The price of varies depending on your cruise line and which add-ons you’d like. This premium beachfront complex has two lagoon pools, swim-up bars, DJs playing music, and plenty of beachfront property.

Explore a Shipwreck

You can set up a trip out to the SS Sapona wreck through one of the resorts. The World War I ship ran aground during a hurricane in 1926 and has remained ever since. The artificial reef is filled with sea life. This can be booked at Resorts World or in advance.

Historic Attractions

Bimini’s rich history is seen throughout the island, like the SS Sapona wreck we mentioned. You can explore some of the local histories at Bimini Museum, where you’ll learn about some of the famous folks who’ve made the island their home over the years (including former resident Ernest Hemingway).

There is no charge to enter the museum, but they do take donations.

Also relatively close to the pier is Dolphin House Museum, a three-story home made entirely out of recycled materials, including many items that washed up on the shore.

If you’re a shark or marine life lover, you’ll love Bimini. Since the waters of the Bahamas are so warm, the Bimini Biological Field Station has a shark lab set up.

Visitors can sign up for a tour of the station and even participate in research or adopt a shark. And in case you’re concerned, the area is filled with lemon sharks, which aren’t aggressive and have zero recorded fatalities against humans.

(Note: The Shark Lab is currently closed because of the pandemic, but you can sign up for expeditions.)

You will be required to take a one-mile ferry ride to South Bimini to explore the Shark Lab.

Local Food and Drink Favorites

The local food favorite is the conch. You can order it prepared in a variety of ways, the most popular being fried conch fritters or ceviche. Conch can be ordered from almost any restaurant that serves seafood, and even a couple of roadside stands serve up this marine mollusk.

In speaking with the locals, there are two popular drinks that Bimini serves, Goombay Smash (four different types of rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice) and Rum Runners (assorted fruit juices, banana liquor, rum, and grenadine), which were made famous by the illegal smuggling of rum between Miami and Bimini.

Final Thoughts

Except for Carnival Corporation’s Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Bimini has the clearest and cleanest waters of any place where cruise ships stop in the region.

We did the Beach Club package ($64.99 per person through the cruise line) during our recent visit, spending the day going back and forth between the lagoon swimming pools and the beach.

The tram service was complimentary and took us directly from the beach to the cruise ship. The roads are bumpy, so hold tight when on the tram.

Overall, it was a memorable experience that I’d book again on another cruise to Bimini.

The small island chain is about 54 miles directly east of Miami, Florida .  It’s also the western most district of the Bahamas. Mainland United States is actually closer to Bimini than the capital city, Nassau, which is over 130 miles to the southeast .

The proximity to the US allows for some to make day trips to the islands by way of high speed ferries. More on that later.

Bimini is only about 9 square miles in totality. Two main islands make up most of the island chain: North Bimini and South Bimini.

North Bimini is 7 miles long and only about 750 feet wide.  South Bimini is about 3 miles long and about half a mile wide.

The water around the islands is very shallow at 20-30 feet in most places. To the west, between Miami and Bimini the Gulf Stream flows northward through water 6,000 feet deep, and this brings a variety of fish to the area.

There’s a reason this island of the Bahamas is so popular for sport fishing. The marine life is diverse around Bimini.

This small island has a rich history waiting to be explored. From its early days as a haven for pirates to its current status as an up-and-coming paradise, Bimini is sure to amaze you with its beauty and culture.

Known by locals as “ The Gateway to the Bahamas ,” Bimini was first settled by indigenous Lucayan people and still retains its Lucayan name “Bimini” which means “small islands” .

The island originally was attractive mainly due to its plentiful fish population and peaceful atmosphere – traits which still define Bimini today.

A world-famous vacation spot for vacationers, the island earned its fame through the contributions of journalist and author Ernest Hemingway .

Hemingway’s many accomplishments, including the two novels “Old Man and the Sea” and “Islands in the Stream,” were inspired by his visits to Bimini .

Bimini is also known as the Big Fish Fishing Capital of the World because it has some of the greatest ocean fishing in the world.

On July 4th, 2021 Bimini welcomed its first cruise ship into the newly finished Resorts World Bimini Cruise Port , the official name for the cruise port on North Bimini island.

The single-pier port was developed by Resorts World Bimini.  It is just one of three ports in the Bahamas that is situated on a non-private island, along with Freeport and Nassau.

With a population of only about 2,000 full time residents, Bimini Bahamas is an exotic destination not yet overrun by tourism and commercialism. You won’t find a Diamonds International in this vacation spot. Beaches are clean and open.

Quiet streets have more golf carts and bicycles than actual cars . And with only one cruise ship docked at the pier at one time, the cruise passenger population is at least slightly limited.

There are no bridges between North and South Bimini . However, there are ferries that will take you back and forth so you can explore some of the activities on our list below.

I also recommend renting a golf cart for easy transportation on your own. It costs $60 for the entire day and travel on the island is very laid back and simple. Just remember to drive on the left hand side of the road. Queens Highway is the main road through North Bimini.

Most cruise lines offer an excursion to Resorts World Bimini which has a casino and beach club. The resort provides the free tram service to the resort and other drop off locations. No ticket is needed. You can walk out of the port area from the cruise ship, but it’s a fairly long walk.

The first tram stop is Resorts World Bimini. The 2nd stop on the tram is Paradise Beach where you can rent loungers, umbrellas, kayaks, and the golf carts mentioned above.

When visiting Bimini with Virgin Voyages, the Beach Club is included at no extra charge.  Virgin partnered with World Resorts to offer the Beach Club as the cruise line’s “private island destination”. The Beach Club has two swimming pools and an exclusive private area for guests staying in Rock Star suites.

A buffet lunch is served at the Beach Club and soft drinks are included, just like on Virgin ships.

When visiting Bimini with other cruise lines, there is a charge to get in the Beach Club and you will also have to pay for food and basic beverages. There is a free tram that will take you from the pier right to the Beach Club.

2. See the underwater, mystical Bimini Wall (Bimini Road)

For a truly remarkable underwater experience that comes with some controversy, check out a dive to the Bimini Wall. This underwater rock formation, sometimes called the Bimini Road has had many conspiracy theories as to its origin.

Is it an ancient road to the lost city of Atlantis?  Was it caused by a tsunami? Man-made or natural, the large rectangular limestone slabs have inspired all kinds of theories. The structure is about half a mile long and is 18 feet below the water.

• Radio Beach – Probably the most popular beach due to its beauty and easy access, Radio Beach is very close to Alice Town. It’s the only public beach on the islands to have public amenities as bathrooms and food vendors.
• Tiki Hut Beach – With a 2 mile-long stretch of white sand, Tiki Hut Beach offers a great getaway. Palm trees and vegetation provide are all around, helping make the beach on South Bimini island seem even more secluded.
• Porgy Bay Beach – This is a cozy, quaint beach in North Bimini just south of Resorts World Bimini in Bailey Town.
• Spook Hill – Shallow and calm waters can be found at Spook Hill beach, and it’s one of the most popular beaches in Bimini for good reason. The name comes from the proximity of the beach to a local cemetery but don’t let that scare you away from the soft as talc sand.
• Blister Beach – A lovely beach in North Bimini known for its calmer waters and great snorkeling, this beach also goes by the name Bimini Bay Beach.
• Resort World Bimini Beach – Perfect for a resort style beach, this area is a 4.5 acre beach with room for up to 2,000 people.
• Local Cays with great beach spots – If you feel like getting a little further away from the main Bimini islands you can check out some incredible local cays. Turtle Rocks, Piquet Rocks, Holm Cay, North Cat Cay (Honeymoon Harbour), and South Cat Cay are just a few local beaches to get away from it all.

4. Go on a shark dive with Bimini Bull Run

You will get up close an personal with Caribbean bull sharks on this Bimini island excursion. The number of sharks you see while on this cage dive is really quite impressive. Shark fishing is actually illegal in the Bahamas and these creatures thrive in the crystal clear waters. 

All you need is a diving mask and a belt and you can plunge into the shark-infested waters for a very unique experience. The sharks are given scraps of food all around the cage and the visibility in these waters is second-to-none.

5. Explore the wreckage of the S.S. Sapona

S.S. Sapona’s wreckage has remained in place for almost 100 years, after the concrete ship ran aground during a hurricane in 1926.

The ship was originally commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson and was built to transport troops during the first World War, although it never did so.  The vessel was made out of concrete since steel was not as readily available at the time.

This popular dive site is perfect for snorkeling as well, as the wreck sits in just 15 feet of water. The shipwreck site was used as a bombing target for United States fighter pilots during World War II , so the ship shows significant damage.

But divers are still able to see inside the concrete hull of the ship and find many varieties of marine life around the area. History lovers and diving enthusiasts alike will find something to love at the S.S. Sapona wreckage site.

6. Visit Rainbow Reef and Tuna Alley

These two amazing dive sites are part of the same reef system off the coast of North Cat Cay . A short boat ride south from the main Bimini islands to the Bimini Cays will get you there, and you can explore both the same day.

• Rainbow Reef is one of the most colorful (hence the name) and shallow reefs in Bimini. Accessible by boat, the maximum depth of the reef is about 20 feet. As part of a protected marine park over 100 species of fish can be found in the area. If you decide to dive or snorkel to the deepest parts of the reef you may find sea turtles and nurse sharks that frequent the reef. Typically this area is teeming with marine life and there is an abundance of coral to admire.
• Tuna Alley has been called by some divers “the best dive site in the Caribbean”. An underwater wall over 100 feet tall inspires awe in most guests who view this site. This is another reef right near North Cat Cay. There are several canyons under the water that are perfect for exploring. The water is pristine as well, as the Gulf Stream’s current helps wash out any debris and keep the seas looking “ Bimini blue” . The name of this scuba diving site was inspired by the numerous tuna that can often be found near the reef.

7. Explore Victory Reef

Victory Reef is also teeming with life and divers can expect to find fish, sea turtles, lobsters and sharks in the area. Most recommend the site for drift diving, as you can drift along with the marine life and enjoy the tall, vibrant, and abundant coral along this beautiful reef. The reef is located south of North Cat Cay , which is south of the Bimini islands and it’s depth runs from 30 – 80 feet.

8. Tour Dolphin House Museum

For $10 per person , you can check out a very unique museum in Bimini. Built completely from recycled materials, this enchanting building houses eclectic mosaics that reflect the islands history. Perhaps the door on the building says it best, “Welcome to Bimini’s most unique and artistic structure.  Built by Ashley Saunders . A bridge between human and dolphin consciousness. A work in progress since 1993.”

As the museum truly is a work in progress you can expect new things to be added all the time. Keep in mind the museum is also the artist’s home, so it’s more of residence than an exhibit. Still, everywhere you turn in the Dolphin House you will find something unique, built by hand, and made from recycled materials . There are 3 levels of the building to explore with a roof top terrace that overlooks the beautiful water.

9. Stop by the legendary Fountain of Youth

According to legend, Arawak Indians in the area told the explorer Juan Ponce de Leon about a Fountain of Youth in Bimini. In 1513 the ambitious explorer set out to find Bimini but failed to find the islands or the fountain. Then he went on to discover the Gulf Stream and Florida instead.

Today there is a 1,000 year-old well carved out of limestone rock that locals refer to as the Fountain of Youth. The well is fairly deep and there is fresh water way down at the bottom. As far as it’s healing properties…. I will just say that being in the calming atmosphere of Bimini is enough to keep one young.

10. Hilton at Resort World Bimini

Hilton at Resort World Bimini is a beautiful resort. It offers an array of amenities and activities such as a private beach, swimming pool, spa, fitness center, restaurants, parasailing, glass-bottom boat tours, tennis courts and more.

Guests can take advantage of complimentary shuttles to the nearby marina or enjoy sailing excursions on crystal clear waters. From deep sea fishing trips to snorkeling and scuba diving expeditions, there is plenty to do around this stunning property. There’s also a casino inside if you feel like leaving some donations to the 750-acre resort .

11. Visit Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina

This resort has been in its current location in Alice Town since 1947 and is the perfect destination for sports fisherman looking for a big-game fishing experience. While the name of the resort kind of says it all, Bimini Big Game Club Resort has a plethora of activities to take part in. 

Amenities include a pool, game area with pool and ping pong, a dive shop, several restaurants, massage services and more. There are hotel and dive packages if you plan on spending the night, or you can book one of their Bimini Dive Safaris to check out Hammerheads and dolphins. Guided fishing excursions from the resort are offered for both new and experienced anglers.  Bimini holds multiple world records for fish caught in the area, so you never know what you might find.

12. Visit Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center

Since the scuba center is located in Bimini Big Game Club Resort I could have just put it in the same category, but I didn’t want those looking exclusively for diving experiences to miss this one. Neal Watson is President of the Bahamas Dive Association and is world-renown for his diving savvy. Oh, and Neal is also Director of Dive Operations for Guy Harvey Outpost so he knows what he’s doing.

Today the scuba center is operated by father and son. There are over 20 dive sites that have buoys marking their location. They are placed and maintained by commercial dive operators. If you want to see any of the reefs or dive sites already mentioned in this article and want a pro to show you the ropes, this is a great starting point.

Because of Bimini’s proximity to the Gulf Stream it is not uncommon for visitors to see spotted dolphins, Loggerhead turtles, Southern stingrays, nurse sharks, and barracudas, along with numerous kingfish and tropical fish.

On a visit to Bimini, you can expect to discover quaint towns that still hold their charm. There are miles of beautiful white sand beaches, and it is a scuba diving paradise with its marine life. You’ll find historical landmarks and plenty of opportunities to experience the local culture whether it is noshing on conch at one of the rustic stands or shopping at the Bimini Craft Center. These are some of the things to do in Bimini but there are plenty more.

Bimini in the Bahamas is becoming a destination for many cruise lines since the Resort World Cruise Port opened in the summer of 2021. The huge dock can accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world. Bimini has welcomed guests, including Ernest Hemmingway and Dr. Martin Luther King, for many years. The island is often overlooked for its more populated neighboring islands and even with the arrival of cruise ships, it still has a hidden gem feel to it. Other than Resort World, the rest of the island is like a step back in time and you can easily imagine what drew Hemmingway to it.

I was on a Press Trip to learn about the Holland America Rotterdam, but I arranged and paid for my day on Bimini Island.

1. Resorts World Tram

I arrived on Holland America Rotterdam and in no time was taking a long stroll down the dock. When you get off your ship, you will see a sign reading: “Walkway to Kayak Beach, Fisherman’s Village, golf cart rental, and taxi to town.” You will also see the complimentary Bimini Tram. It can, however, be confusing when you come off the cruise ship. You are asked if you booked a tour, and they direct you to the tram, but it is free for everyone. I walked the pier to stretch my legs but with the heat, it can feel challenging. After a long day, our guide dropped us off to catch the tram back to the cruise ship.

Pro Tip: There is a golf cart rental place at the end of the dock off to the right. The cart can be rented for $60 cash.

2. Fisherman’s Village And Kayak Beach

Located at the end of the dock, you’ll find a few businesses and the lovely Kayak Beach. As the name suggests, you can rent watercraft here. I thought it was lovely and a great place to get some sun not too far from the ship.

3. Bimini Island Tours

I highly recommend booking a tour with Bimini Island Tours . This is a one-man show with guide Cleveland Maxwell Rolle Jr. — but you can call him Max. This tour was the highlight of my trip and Max was a joy. He is a Bahamahost certified with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investment, and Aviation as well as a certified Eco Tour Guide with the Bahamas National Trust. We met as strangers but left as family, literally; I think Max is related to half the people on the island.

I tend to explore on my own, but in this case, my experience would have been totally different. I was able to see so much more. This is a sleepy island and many of the businesses open at a more leisurely pace. Max planned our itinerary and made sure that someone met us at each stop. Having a local Biminite really made a difference in getting to meet so many interesting people with such great stories. I truly had an authentic Bahamian experience.

These are the places and people I met during my tour with Bimini Island Tours. Because Max is a private guide, he can tailor your trip to what you would like to see and experience. Max communicated by email, set up the perfect day, and sent me a final itinerary for my approval.

4. Resorts World

My tour with Max started with a driving tour of this resort. This is a great option if you just want a day at the beach. You can book a package with your cruise, or simply take the tram and pay at the desk. The beach club is Virgin Cruise Lines “private beach” when their ships are in port. At other times the beach club is run by Resorts World and open to the public. It is a beautiful beach with two pools for a resort experience. You can also splurge on a cabana. The property has a casino as well. It is a pretty resort with not much local about it. I chose to spend my time supporting the local businesses.

5. Nate’s Bakery

One of the things I appreciated most on this tour was the opportunity to visit small local businesses. Nate Hanna has been baking bread since the 1970s. He started his own store after the death of his mother who started the business. When you walk in the door, Nate welcomes you with his big, bold personality and the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the air.

He started the business following in the footsteps of his late mother who ran a successful bakery. Her photo is prominently displayed in the shop. Nate bakes fresh Bimini bread every day. The classic recipe is a sweet rich bread made with generous amounts of sugar and coconut milk. It is so tasty especially when baked with all the love and care Nate pours into it.

6. Ansil’s Boat House

Meeting Mr. Ansil Saunders was one of the highlights of my trip. He had our whole group in tears when he shared his experiences meeting and serving as a guide to Dr. Martin Luther King when he visited Bimini. King found inspiration to write his Nobel Peace Prize speech during his time exploring the mangrove forests in a boat with Ansil.

As a child, Ansil’s family lived next door to the house Ernest Hemmingway stayed in during his time in Bimini. In addition to his great tales, Ansil’s boats are legendary. He builds one boat a year: a 16-foot bone fisher which is a shallow draft boat made to catch bonefish. Ansil holds the world record for the largest bonefish caught.

7. The War Memorial And Heroes Park

This is just a quick stop to see the park that honors Bimini’s veterans of World War I and II as well as local heroes. The park has a lovely view of the ocean.

8. The Dolphin House Museum

The Dolphin House is an incredible work of art created by Mr. Ashley Saunders (Ansil’s brother). He wasn’t always an artist, but an experience swimming with the wild dolphins of Bimini woke up the artistic spirit within him. You’ll find descriptions of this as a kitschy tourist attraction, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Saunders is incredibly talented and built the entire home from the ground up using materials found around the island and that washed ashore. He was upcycling before it was a thing, and he has created an incredible work of art. Join him and take a tour as he explains his inspiration for every mosaic, window, and built-in piece of furniture in the Dolphin House Museum, his home. Such a unique experience and one of the many things I loved doing in Bimini .

9. Radio Beach

We just did a quick stop on the Radio Beach. It’s definitely the tourist beach with shops, food stands, and, most importantly, public restrooms. It is named after the radio towers nearby and was the site of the first radio and telegraph station in 1920. It is also easily accessible by golf cart if you choose to rent one instead of taking a tour.

10. Visit A Conch Shack

Conch is plentiful in Bimini, and you will see piles of shells in the water especially near the Conch Shack, where you can try Conch Salad, a local specialty. The salad is like ceviche only made with conch, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, and citrus juices. The Conch is prepared fresh each day. Behind each stand along the water, you can see fenced in areas where the conch is stored until it is harvested. At one of the stops, Max pointed out a rough-looking raft which turned out to be one Cuban refugees escaped on. There are so many to choose from, but Joe’s Conch Shack stands out. 

“We put more love and care in it,” said the young lady working when asked what makes Joe’s stand out from the rest. “We cut up everything right in front of you.” So, you can see how fresh it is. 

11. Bimini Craft Center – Arts, Crafts, Souvenirs and Food

For those that love to shop, head to the Bimini Craft Center where you will find 17 booths filled with locally-made island crafts, hats, T-shirts, and other souvenirs. Located in the heart of Alice Town, you have the chance to meet friendly locals and learn about their history from interpretive signs throughout the center. Free Wi-Fi is available as well as public restrooms. Each day, a local food truck parks there, selling a variety of Bahamian food. It’s well worth the stop.

12. Ernest Hemingway Ruins – Tales of the Excentric Writer

As you drive through Alice Town, you will see some ruins with a big interpretive sign highlighting Ernest Hemingway’s stay on Bimini. The island was a huge inspiration for him, and he loved sport fishing in the area. It is said that Bimini gave him the insight to write The Old Man and the Sea .

Locals share tales of his infamous behavior on the island. It is also said that he was a heavy drinker and walked around with a 40-ounce bottle of rum stashed in his pocket. A boxing aficionado, Hemingway would bet $10 that someone couldn’t knock him out with one punch. He would allow the first hit and taunt them to make sure it was a hard one. The next thing the challenger knew, he was laid out with someone dumping water over him to wake him up.

13. Three Daughters Restaurant

Finish your day with a meal at Three Daughters restaurant and enjoy their specialties, either the cracked lobster or cracked conch. I asked Max where he goes to eat, and he said this was his favorite. You can eat in or get your food to go. Filled mostly with locals and the occasional tourist, the food here was fantastic. The interior is nothing fancy, but you can eat on the screened porch for an excellent view.

Bimini doesn’t have any public transport system. However, you have three transportation options when on the island for a day. These are:

Free shuttle: A free tram takes tourists to the main attractions and beaches in North Bimini.

Golf cart hire: Hiring a golf cart is the most convenient way to explore the island. This gives you the freedom to go beach hopping and find hidden gems on this paradise island. Just remember to drive on the left.

Taxi:  Taxis are widely available at Bimini Cruise Port and the airport. To get to North Bimini from South Bimini Airport, take a taxi to the South Ferry Dock. Then a water taxi will take you to the ferry port in Alice Town—a journey of around ten minutes.
