Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow

Helps maintain a constant vehicle speed and a set following-interval behind a vehicle detected ahead of yours and, if the detected vehicle comes to a stop, can decelerate and stop your vehicle, without you having to keep your foot on the brake or the accelerator. When ACC with Low Speed Follow slows your vehicle by applying the brakes, your vehicle’s brake lights will illuminate.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

Improper use of ACC with Low Speed Follow can lead to a crash.

Use ACC with Low Speed Follow only when driving on expressways and in good road and weather conditions.

ACC with Low Speed Follow has limited braking capability and may not stop your vehicle in time to avoid a collision with a vehicle that quickly stops in front of you.

Always be prepared to apply the brake pedal if the conditions require.

Exiting a vehicle that has been stopped while the ACC with Low Speed Follow system is operating can result in the vehicle moving without operator control.

A vehicle that moves without operator control can cause a crash, resulting in serious injury or death.

Never exit a vehicle when the vehicle is stopped by ACC with Low Speed Follow.

How to activate the system

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

To Set the Vehicle Speed

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

  • Models with A-type meter
  • Models with B-type meter

When driving at about 25 mph (40 km/h) or above: Take your foot off the pedal and press the RES/+ / SET/− switch up or down when you reach the desired speed. The moment you release the switch, the set speed is fixed, and ACC with Low Speed Follow begins.

When you use ACC with Low Speed Follow, Straight Driving Assist (a feature of the Electric Power Steering system) is activated. By enabling the steering system to automatically compensate for natural steering pull, Straight Driving Assist makes it easier for you to keep your vehicle in a straight line.

When driving slower than about 25 mph (40 km/h): If the vehicle is moving and the brake pedal is not depressed, pressing the switch fixes the set speed to about 25 mph (40 km/h) regardless of current vehicle speed. If your vehicle is stationary, you can set the vehicle speed even with the brake pedal depressed.

When ACC with Low Speed Follow starts operating, the vehicle icon, interval bars and set speed appear on the gauge.

ACC with Low Speed Follow Conditions and Limitations

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

  • On roads with frequent lane-change or continuous stop and go traffic, ACC with Low Speed Follow cannot keep an appropriate distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.
  • On roads with sharp turns.
  • On roads with toll collection facilities or other objects between lanes of traffic, or in parking areas, or facilities with drive through access.
  • On roads with bad weather (rain, fog, snow, etc.), ACC with Low Speed Follow may not detect the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you properly.
  • On roads with slippery or icy surfaces. The wheels may spin out and your vehicle may lose the control on the condition.
  • On roads with steep uphill or steep downhill slopes.
  • On roads with undulating slopes.

Customized Features Defaulting All the Settings

When in Operation

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

  • The vehicle ahead of you is going at almost the same speed as, or faster than, your vehicle.
  • A vehicle that cuts in front of you is going faster than your vehicle, gradually increasing the interval between the vehicles.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

  • When the vehicle ahead of you moves away, such as when entering an interchange or rest area, ACC with Low Speed Follow may continue to maintain the set following-interval for a short time.

There is a vehicle ahead

ACC with Low Speed Follow monitors if a vehicle ahead of you enters the ACC with Low Speed Follow range. If a vehicle is detected doing so, the ACC with Low Speed Follow system maintains or decelerates your vehicle’s set speed in order to keep the vehicle’s set following-interval from the vehicle ahead.

To Set or Change Following-interval

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

When a vehicle whose speed is slower than your set speed comes in or cuts in front of you and is detected by the radar and the camera, your vehicle starts to slow down.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

There is no vehicle ahead

Your vehicle maintains the set speed without having to keep your foot on the brake or accelerator pedal. If there previously was a vehicle detected ahead that kept your vehicle from traveling at the set speed, ACC with Low Speed Follow accelerates your vehicle to the set speed, and then maintains it.

While driving down steep hills, ACC with Low Speed Follow brakes to inhibit excessive acceleration for maintaining the set speed. However, the vehicle speed may become faster than the set speed.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

When you depress the accelerator pedal

You can temporarily increase the vehicle speed. In this case, there is no audible or visual alert even if a vehicle is in the ACC with Low Speed Follow range. ACC with Low Speed Follow stays on unless you cancel it. Once you release the accelerator pedal, the system resumes an appropriate speed for keeping the following-interval while a vehicle ahead is within the ACC with Low Speed Follow range.

A vehicle detected ahead is within ACC with Low Speed Follow range and slows to a stop

Your vehicle also stops automatically. The Stopped message appears on the gauge. When the vehicle ahead of you starts again, if you press the RES/+ / SET/− switch up or down, or depress the accelerator pedal, ACC with Low Speed Follow operates again within the prior set speed.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

If no vehicle is ahead of you before you resume driving, depress the accelerator pedal and ACC with Low Speed Follow will operate again within the prior set speed.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

The system may automatically shut off under certain conditions. Some examples of these conditions are listed below. Other conditions may reduce some of the ACC with Low Speed Follow functions.

  • The vehicle mounted onto a bump, curb, chock, embankment, etc.
  • You drive the vehicle where water is deep.
  • Your vehicle has a frontal collision.

Environmental conditions

  • Driving in bad weather (rain, fog, snow, etc.).

Roadway conditions

  • Driving on a snowy or wet roadway (obscured lane marking, vehicle tracks, reflected lights, road spray, high contrast).

Vehicle conditions

  • The outside of the windshield is blocked by dirt, mud, leaves, wet snow, etc.
  • An abnormal tire or wheel condition (incorrect sizes, varied sizes or construction, improperly inflated, compact spare tire*, etc.).
  • The camera temperature gets too high.
  • The electric parking brake is applied.
  • The front grille is dirty.
  • The vehicle is tilted due to a heavy load or suspension modifications.
  • When tire chains are installed.
  • The vehicle is towing a trailer.

Detection limitations

  • A vehicle suddenly crosses in front of you.
  • The interval between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you is too short.
  • A vehicle cuts in front of you at a slow speed, and it brakes suddenly.
  • You accelerate rapidly and approach the vehicle ahead of you at high speed.
  • The vehicle ahead of you is a motorcycle, bicycle, mobility scooter, or other small vehicle.
  • There are animals in front of your vehicle.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

  • A vehicle ahead of you stops and the speed difference between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you is significantly large.
  • An oncoming vehicle suddenly comes in front of you.
  • Your vehicle abruptly crosses over in front of an oncoming vehicle.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

  • The vehicle ahead of you brakes suddenly.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

  • Your vehicle or the vehicle ahead of you is driving on one edge of the lane.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

To Adjust the Vehicle Speed

Increase or decrease the vehicle speed using the RES/+ / SET/− switch on the steering wheel.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

  • Each time you press the RES/+ / SET/− switch up or down, the vehicle speed is increased or decreased by about 1 mph or 1 km/h accordingly.
  • If you keep the RES/+ / SET/− switch pressed up or down, the vehicle speed increases or decreases by about 5 mph or 5 km/h accordingly.

Press the Interval button to change the ACC with Low Speed Follow following-interval. Each time you press the button, the following-interval (the interval behind a vehicle detected ahead of you) setting cycles through furthest, far, mid, and nearest following-intervals.

Determine the most appropriate following-interval setting based on your specific driving conditions. Be sure to adhere to any following-interval requirements set by local regulation.

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

The higher your vehicle’s following-speed is, the longer the nearest, mid, far, or furthest following-interval becomes. See the following examples for your reference.

When your vehicle stops automatically because a vehicle detected ahead of you has stopped, the interval between the two vehicles will vary based on the ACC with Low Speed Follow interval setting.

To cancel ACC with Low Speed Follow, do any of the following:

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

Automatic cancellation

The beeper sounds and a message appears on the driver information interface when ACC with Low Speed Follow is automatically canceled. Any of these conditions may cause the ACC with Low Speed Follow to automatically cancel:

  • Bad weather (rain, fog, snow, etc.)
  • When the radar sensor behind the Honda emblem gets dirty.
  • The vehicle ahead of you cannot be detected.
  • An abnormal tire condition is detected, or the tires are skidding.
  • Driving on a mountainous road for extended periods, or driving off road.
  • Abrupt steering wheel movement.
  • When the ABS, VSA ® , CMBS TM , or Low Speed Braking Control* is activated.
  • When the ABS or VSA ® system indicator comes on.
  • When the vehicle is stopped on a very steep slope.
  • When you manually apply the parking brake.
  • When the detected vehicle within the ACC with Low Speed Follow range is too close to your vehicle.
  • When accelerating rapidly.
  • The camera behind the rearview mirror, or the area around the camera, including the windshield, gets dirty.
  • The vehicle has repeatedly applied the brakes to maintain the set speed (for example, you are descending a long slope).
  • When the system doesn't detect any driving actions from the driver for a certain amount of time while the LKAS is also activated.
  • When the Maximum Load Limit is exceeded.
  • When passing through an enclosed space, such as tunnel.
  • When the parking brake and brake system indicator (amber) comes on.

The ACC with Low Speed Follow automatic cancellation can be also triggered by the following causes. In these cases, the parking brake will be automatically applied.

  • The driver’s seat belt is unfastened when the vehicle is stationary.
  • The vehicle stops for more than 10 minutes.
  • The engine is turned off.

Adaptive Cruise Control the only option?

  • Add to quote

Elite here. I hate the ACC system. Even adjusted to the smallest distance, it just feels like the car lags so far behind the car in front and slows to a crawl. I guess I'm an aggressive driver, but this is painful. Not looking forward to long summer trips in this. Is there no way to switch to just a regular cruise control setting?

Hold in the button on the steering wheel that changes the amount of space for the acc and it magically goes to cruise control as we have always known. You're welcome!

OMG. Thank you so much! I love the search feature of this website. I will have to tell my wife about this and try it next time we are out driving. I guess I am in the "aggressive" column. I just want to set the cruise...I can do the rest. I will look forward to using this when we are on long road trips, light traffic, or darkness hours with the lane keeping assist to keep things a little more lively when driving forever is monotonous.

Press and hold the distance button to switch to regular cruise control. And yes, you might just be used to driving on the aggressive side. I'm a pretty defensive driver and I love the feature.

I have noticed that if you get used to using it on a regular drive that you do, it's a little easier to anticipate when it's going to react. I don't use it when there is a lot of traffic.. Brake Lights, etc... But, if I am driving 80mph for about 2 hours and there is traffic that slows down to 70 for passing a slow vehicle.. You can get used to how it slows down and then speeds up again. You can change lanes in anticipation of it reacting, etc. It's personality is more of a monitoring system to keep distances safe automatically.

Oh my gosh, thanks for that tip! Guess it would help if I read my manual. Awesome!

An observation I have made after using ACC for a while: I am following some other car at exactly the same speed as that car, but 3 seconds behind them. I am matching their speed exactly, and neither of us is in danger beyond that of normal driving. An "aggressive" driver comes up behind me and rides my back bumper. He is now doing exactly the same thing as me (matching the speed of the car in front of me), except he is putting both himself and me in heightened danger of an accident. Eventually he grows tired of riding my bumper, speeds around me, slashes in front of me and rides the bumper of the car in front of me. My ACC slows briefly as he cuts in front, but I am still driving exactly the same speed as the original front car, with a renewed level of safety. Meanwhile, "aggressive" driver is still doing exactly the same thing as me (matching the speed of the original front car), but now he is putting himself and the front car in danger. Aggressive driver is essentially doing exactly what ACC does, except adding a very high level of danger. Why? What's the gain in that? Perhaps we should start writing it like this: A ggre SS ive.

I also do not use ACC in traffic. I hate it slams on brake when someone cuts in front of me. Only use when traffic is very light

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

You can override the system by accelerating or braking yourself. After a while you learn it's habits like taking its time after a lane change to accelerate...

adaptive cruise control honda pilot

Will the switch over to regular cruise control work after the H radar emblem on grill freezes up and the ACC/safety system becomes disabled?

Honda Pilot's Adaptive Cruise Control Problem Solved

The cause of our weird issue is literally, 'what the h, honda', sharing is nice.

We respect your privacy . All email addresses you provide will be used just for sending this story.

When you buy a brand-new car, you want to believe it’s a pristine paragon of mechanical virtue, free from the world weariness common in a used car. Sometimes, though, a brand-new car has already experienced a mishap. That was the case with our new 2016 Honda Pilot , which developed a weird recurring problem with its adaptive cruise control system shortly after we took delivery.

It’s not all that unusual for one of the 70 or so new cars we buy every year to develop an early-onset malady, like a rattle, warped brake rotor, electrical problem, or check-engine light. The experience of getting those problems sorted out gives us more insight into the consumer experience than if we relied only on the specially groomed “press fleet” cars that automakers supply to most of the media. Normally, the dealer’s service department can diagnose and readily fix those issues.

However, a quick cure at the dealer wasn’t in the cards for our Pilot when its adaptive cruise control showed a penchant for misbehavior, and the ultimate explanation for its faultiness would have been worthy of an NPR Car Talk Puzzler.

Feature Fixation

Do you use your car's cruise control often? Leave a comment below.

2016 Honda Pilot front

Here’s the Background

The new Honda Pilot’s adaptive cruise control system uses a video camera and millimeter-wave radar to maintain its distance from the car ahead. In ours, the adaptive cruise would sometimes conk out after roughly eight miles of driving. Warning indicators would light up the gauge cluster, while the system defaulted to standard cruise-control mode. Our first trip back to the dealer failed to solve the problem. The service department thought the issue was a misaligned or dirty radar unit and they tidied it up and adjusted it, assuming all was well. But that didn’t work. The malfunction recurred whenever we took our Pilot out on a trip. Back to the dealership it went, and this time the service department enlisted help from higher up Honda’s service food chain. After some deep study, the service engineering team figured out that the radar problem was caused by the grille emblem!

Specifically, our Pilot had the wrong plastic “H” in the middle of its grille. Turns out there are two emblems in inventory, one for Pilots, like ours, that have the fancy Honda Sensing radar system and another, very similar looking H, for Pilots without the Honda Sensing system. The standard emblem was interfering with the radar signal.

So why did we wind up with a duff emblem? Honda officials explained to us that apparently our car had met a mishap on the assembly line, necessitating the replacement of its front bumper and grille. Somehow, the wrong emblem cover was used for the repair.

It was a relief to hear that our car’s radar glitch was probably a one-off event. Certainly that’s the impression Honda officials left us with.

The lesson here is that whenever anything the least bit abnormal crops with a new car, return it to the dealership right away—especially while the the original warranty remains in force.

Honda Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (10 Popular Models)

Once only seen on luxury vehicles, adaptive cruise control has become commonplace in many mainstream cars, including Hondas.

The following Honda cars, SUVs, trucks, and minivan models have an adaptive cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

honda

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Honda models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, slowing down when the vehicle ahead does.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Hondas have Honda Sensing, a host of active safety features that includes adaptive cruise control.

Rival mainstream car makers that have popular models with ACC include:

  • Toyota vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .
