Where You Can Stay In An Airstream RV (And How It All Started)

In 1929, Wally Byam, an advertising executive and keen adventurer, built the first Airstream trailer – a teardrop-shaped canvas and Masonite shelter attached to a Ford Model T chassis. His inspiration was his wife Marion, who was fed up camping in draughty tents. It had sleeping space, an ice chest and a stove.

1929: the first Airstream prototype

<p>A year later, Byam published a DIY guide to building a trailer, which sold like hotcakes. Requests for him to construct RVs came flooding in and he opened a small factory in Culver City, California. The Airstream we know today was born out of this operation in 1931 when there were just 50 trailer manufacturers around. In the following five years, this exploded to 400 businesses building trailers to meet the demand, but when the Great Depression and the Second World War hit, the vast majority closed down. Airstream is the only one that remains today.</p>

How Airstream took over the world's campsites

Since its inception in the 1930s, there have been myriad styles of Airstream and today, you can rent some of the coolest designs overnight for a retro experience with a touch of modern luxury. Here, we explore the story behind the brand, the best vintage models to hire or buy and the Airstreams you can sleep in today.

The firm outgrew its Californian headquarters by the 1950s and in 1952 Byam opened a larger factory in Ohio. With sales buoyant throughout the decade, Byam further refined his RV line-up and launched "the world's first self-contained trailer" Airstream International in 1958. The 150,000-square-foot (46,000sqm) Ohio factory is still operating today, with new models coming off the production line every few years.

Now, Airstream produces 13 different models of trailers, RVs and motorhomes, making it a modern travel stalwart.

Airstream's current roster of road tripping vehicles and trailers includes this single-axle travel trailer, named Bambi (the nickname their historic single-axle trailers had been unofficially monikered). It has a small double bed inside plus a convertible diner, a kitchenette and an outdoor shower and it has built-in air conditioning and heating – all within just a 16-foot (5m) aluminum build.

2022: modern machines

<p>At the other end of the spectrum, the company's Globetrotter model comes as a 30-foot (9m) trailer with an extensive kitchen, lounge seat dining area, USB outlets, climate control and rear-view cameras. For an even bigger trailer, the Classic comes in 33 feet (10m) and comfortably sleeps up to five people. </p>

In February 2022, the company announced the research and development of their brand new concept: the eStream, a fully electric and innovative new RV model that's designed to be better for the environment, with cutting-edge technology using a battery-powered drivetrain. It will have a rear-bed and a convertible dining area and the total floor plan is set to be 22 feet long (6.7m).

Hilton is betting on 'glamping,' and I can see why after staying in an Airstream at a luxury campground

Travelers can soon use Hilton Honors points at AutoCamp's popular "glamping" resorts.
The chain is best known for its high-end Airstream-trailer hotel rooms .
The rapidly expanding luxury camping chain has seven locations, many near national parks.

Hilton wants to know: Why stay in a conventional hotel room when you can pay more than $600 a night to sleep in a trailer?

The hotel giant says its members will soon be able to earn and use Hilton Honors points to book AutoCamp's chain of luxury campgrounds , best known for their stationary Airstream trailer hotel rooms.

It's Hilton's first move into the increasingly popular "glamping" — a portmanteau of "glamorous" and "camping" — industry.

As someone who's stayed at two of AutoCamp resorts, I think the mutually beneficial partnership is a great idea.

Like other "glamping" and campgrounds, AutoCamp experienced a windfall in bookings during the COVID-19 pandemic

AutoCamp has seven high-end resorts. Most are near national parks (like Zion, Utah) or popular city-folk getaways (like the Catskills in New York or Cape Cod in Massachusetts).

What it's like at an AutoCamp resort — and why the partnership makes sense

Many luxury campsites have high-end canvas tents or tiny homes. While AutoCamp offers both, its most popular accommodations are its nostalgic, 31-foot-long Airstream trailers .

I've stayed at AutoCamp's Yosemite and Joshua Tree resorts. Although it's been two years since my last visit, I still prefer these fun trailers to any hotel or Airbnb — even ceding time at the national parks to spend more at the trailer-lined properties.

I love camping as much as I love the plushness of luxury hotels. AutoCamp combined the best parts of both to create a high-end concept that could delight even the biggest nature hater.

AutoCamp's resorts are significantly more comfortable and amenities-saturated than most traditional campsites, making it the perfect option for travelers who want the camping aesthetic without the camping pains.

No need to sleep on a dirt floor, forgo warm showers, or "go outside." Every AutoCamp trailer has beds with pillows, bathrooms with high-end toiletries, and kitchenettes with microwaves — not to mention the private outdoor seating and firepits.

Guests also have access to a communal lounge with food and beverage (yes, alcohol) menus, a general store, and a midcentury modern flair. Some locations flex a swimming pool and on-site programs like guided walks as well.

Given these high-end hotel-like comforts, it should be no surprise that Hilton has decided to go with AutoCamp for its first venture into the great outdoors.

The glamping company's properties are the perfect compromise between the invigorating seclusion of camping and the indulgences of a traditional Hilton hotel.

Kate Pierson, a founding member and singer of the B-52s, has listed her Mojave Desert retreat dubbed Kate’s Lazy Desert for $452,000.

The property, located in the unincorporated community of Landers in the Mojave Desert, is made up of six fully outfitted Airstream trailers, according to listing agent Niko Esposito of the Paul Kaplan Group/Bennion Deville Home .

“This vintage Airstream park exudes retro charm,” the listing reads in part, “each bursting with vibrant colors, ready for your love and personal touches to welcome guests for a one-of-a-kind glamping experience.”

The trailers, crafted by Pierson and her wife, have their own unique 70s-era decor that includes yellow and orange curtains, bright furniture and color walls including one splattered with orange lava lamp shapes.

Pierson was one of the original members of the the B-52s, which formed in the late 1970s in Athens, Ga. The band included Fred Schneider, Cindy Wilson, Keith Strickland and Ricky Wilson, who would later die. The name of the band came from the Beehive hairdo inspired by the nose of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress. The band had many hits including “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack” and “Roam.” Pierson, known for her beehive hairdo and high-pitch voice, was also a guest vocalist in R.E.M.’s “Shiny Happy People” song.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
