Anathema are a British progressive rock band. They formed in Liverpool, England in 1990, and their music has run the gamut stylistically, from death/doom in their early days to progressive and symphonic rock more recently.

Originally known as Pagan Angel upon their formation, they were comprised of three brothers - Vincent, Daniel and Jamie Cavanagh - as well as drummer John Douglas and singer Darren White. The current lineup is comprised of Vincent on rhythm guitar, Daniel playing lead, Jamie on bass - after a ten year absence between 1991 and 2001 - Douglas now on keyboards, his brother Lee on vocals, and Daniel Cardoso behind the drum kit. They’ve slowly transitioned not just through various lineups and reshuffles - Vincent originally took on vocal duties after White left in 1995 - but also through different genres, too, with their death/doom origins gradually giving way to a gothic metal period in the nineties and then, more recently, into full-blown progressive rock.

Despite all this upheaval, they’ve continued to tour and record with a sizeable cult fanbase keeping them going, and they remain a fixture on the European tour circuit. Their tenth album, ‘Distant Satellites’, was released in 2014, and incorporates aspects of all of their different sounds to date, underpinned by an undercurrent of new prog. The record was met with unanimous critical acclaim, with the reviews aggregator Metacritic awarding it an average score of 81.

Live reviews

Given the city’s long-standing association with the pop sounds of The Beatles, perhaps Liverpool isn’t the most obvious place for a progressive rock band to hail from - especially one so in thrall, over the course of a near twenty-five year career, to sounds that have included symphonic rock, death metal, doom metal and gothic metal, as well as more straightforward alternative rock. Anathema are precisely that, though; the current lineup involves Vincent, Daniel and Jamie Cavanagh - all brothers - as well as another set of siblings, John and Lee Douglas, together with Daniel Cardoso, a Portuguese multi-instrumentalist.

The band released their tenth album, Distant Satellites, earlier this year, and as usual saw it chart in Finland, Germany, Holland and Greece, countries in which they retain a strong cult following. That’s down in no small part to the amount of touring they’ve done in those nations, with their technically proficient live shows being the stuff of legend amongst their fans. They still have a cult following in the UK, too, and they’ll bring Distant Satellites to intimate rooms across the country this coming September, before setting off on a wider European jaunt that is currently set to last well into November, taking them all across the continent.

At the HiFi in Brisbane Australia on 21st August 2014 Anathema made their first appearance down-under. This was one of the best concerts I have ever been to (and I have been to many). From their opening song Untouchable Part 1 (Weather Systems) through to the last song Sleepless (The Silent Enigma). Anathema played with so much emotion, energy and commitment that it (almost ) made it worth waiting 2 1/2 decades to see . Highlights included a powerful rendering of the song Anathema (Distance Satellites). Some of the other songs they played were; Thin Air, Deep, The Storm Before the Calm, Closer, A Natural Disaster, Distant Satellites and A Simple Mistake.Vinnie and Lee sang with great harmony and emotion. Danny also sang and played piano but his prowess is firstly as a guitarist and did not disappoint. They played songs from most of their albums and recognised that some of their fans would want some of the older music as well as their recent. They played for two hours and had two encores. All of the band seemed genuinely pleased to be in Australia and in front of a grateful audience who were enthusiastic and included a wide range of people.

The 1st Anathema has sold out a show in Glasgow, and what a show! Opening the set with the lost song parts 1&2 set the standard for the rest of the night—utter class. Everything from vocals to keys were note perfect! Lee's vocals were just sublime. One of the best gigs I've been to in a while & I recommend Seeing anathema even if your not a fan,you will be after. A must see band & can't wait to see them again.10/10

Showcasing their latest album, The Optimist, Anathema' Sydney show was nothing short of spectacular. It was the third time I've seen them at The Metro, and the venue seems to be the perfect fit for them. Personal highlights were The Beginning And The End, A Simple Mistake and the first half of Looking Outside Inside.

The VIP experience was really well run, too. Best concert of 2017 for me.

This was one of the happiest days of my life!

I've been listening to Anathema since I was in early college years (about 12 years ago)... I used to listen to their Judgement non-stop! Especially in my graduation project... Lots of memories :)

The fact that they also were celebrating their musical life made the concert very special!

It was just perfect!

Geweldig concert, heb erg genoten. Teleurgesteld over slechte lichtshow.

How many superlatives would suffice for this tremendous show? Quite simply stunning. A real band making real music. Vinnie and Lee's vocals were brilliant, Danny was in superb form on guitar, vocals and backing vocals. And when the full band came on, the quality never wavered. Brilliant songs brilliantly performed in an outstanding venue.

It was a good gig but there was 2 issues that stopped it from being amazing. First one is, the bassist was not able to come so all the bass was automated. Second one was, the sound system at the Milyon Performance Hall was so bad that it even blasted off while the band playing Angelica, luckily it came back quickly so the show continued.

Anathema konseri bu işyeri yüzünden mahv oldu. 2 kelime ingilizce bilmeyeni işik başına koymuşlar.

nekadar FUCK dediler adamlar hak etti zaten.

Fişler sürekli çikiyordu. yani Vincent sorduğu gibi "izmirde başka çalabileçeğimiz yer yok muydu?"

umarım yeterinde kendisi sizlerle kavga etmiş bu rezillik için.

fantastic band, great song writers and amazing live show performers. I have been listening to them since 1998, still having fun in their live shows. no exaggeration; they are one of the best bands of all times. Boston has to be always in their U.S tour list! Finally, they deserve a larger venue with better acoustics in Boston.

ANATHEMA Announces European 10th-Anniversary Tour In Celebration Of “We’re Here Because We’re Here” Album

anathema tour dates

ANATHEMA  will celebrate the tenth anniversary of its iconic release  “We’re Here Because We’re Here” by taking the album on the road for a series of exclusive shows throughout Europe in March 2020. Tickets will go on-sale Friday at 10am BST via anathemamusic.com/tour-dates/

Upon its release,   “We’re Here Because We’re Here” was their first collection of new material in six years and they exploded back into action with a multi-coloured, multi-layered work of unbridled emotion, passion and intensity which saw it awarded Classic Rock ‘s “Prog Album Of The Year” as well as lauded by  Kerrang! ,  Metal Hammer  and many more.

Talking about the tour,  Danny Cavanagh  says: “We never usually do anniversary tours of particular albums, but in the case of  ‘We’re Here Because We’re Here’ , which is the album that began our rebirth, we feel this is something we want to do. What I love about this album and that time in our journey is the life affirming qualities in the music. It’s an album of hope, reflection, of summer, of an intense uplifting emotion. We will do all we can to augment the trip with a never before seen light and video show to enhance the experience. Join us in the dreaming light.”

Talking further,  Vincent Cavanagh  says: “Well, putting aside my incredulity that it has been almost 10 years, I’m really into the idea of this tour from a creative perspective. How will we play these songs live now? How will some songs have evolved in the meantime? What can we do with the visual production? It’s a great record to revisit as the themes are still as honest and personal as they’ve always been but there are more shafts of light that cut through the darkness. The plan is to do two sets: the ‘We’re Here Because We’re Here’ album in full and then a second set comprising the best stuff from the other records and maybe a brand new song or two… Hope to see you there!”

The award-winning alternative rock masters have released 11 studio albums of fearless and uncompromising beauty. Ever since their debut,  “Serenades” , in 1993, they’ve refused to be pigeonholed and have continuously evolved; all the way up to their most recent studio album, 2017’s conceptual masterstroke  “The Optimist” , which revealed some of the darkest, most challenging music they ever put their name to, as well as a series of live albums and compilations.  “We’re Here Because We’re Here”  has become an integral part of the bands journey so far, and next March gives the band and fans the chance to revisit the album of shimmering majesty and fully immerse themselves in the live experience.

The band recently announced that it has signed to the  Mascot Label Group  and will work on a new album to come in 2020.

About anathema.

Anathema are a British rock band from Liverpool. The line-up consists of singers and guitarists Vincent and Daniel Cavanagh, their brother Jamie Cavanagh on bass, siblings John and Lee Douglas, respectively drummer and singer, and keyboardist Daniel Cardoso since November 2012. The band was founded as Pagan Angel in 1990 by the three Cavanagh siblings, John, and singer Darren White, as a death/doom band. At the time White was the only singer of the band. The following year, Jamie left and was replaced by Duncan Patterson. Under this line-up, Anathema released their first EP, The Crestfallen (1992), and their first album, Serenades (1993). However, White left in 1995; Vincent decided to act as Anathema's vocalist in addition to his guitarist function in the albums The Silent Enigma (1995) and Eternity (1996), which were going into a more gothic metal direction. In 1997, John left the band, and was replaced by Shaun Steels for the album Alternative 4 (1998). Both Patterson and Steels left the same year, replaced by Dave Pybus and a returning John Douglas, while former My Dying Bride keyboardist and violinist Martin Powell also joined the band (Daniel Cavanagh was also acting as the band's only keyboardist, and shared this position since). The only album released with this line-up was Judgement (1999): the same year Powell switched positions with Cradle of Filth's keyboardist Les Smith who joined Anathema, and Lee Douglas, John's sister, was added to the line-up as a backing and occasional lead vocalist. The band released their sixth album A Fine Day to Exit in 2001, turning to an alternative sound. Shortly after the release, Pybus announced his departure and was replaced by the band's original bassist, Jamie Cavanagh, reuniting the three brothers in the band for the first time since 1991. There were no new members for the next ten years, with the albums A Natural Disaster (2003) and We're Here Because We're Here (2010) all being recorded and released by the same line-up, with the sound turning even more towards progressive rock; however, Daniel Cavanagh left Anathema in 2002 to join Antimatter, returning in 2003. Smith left Anathema in 2011, and Vincent and Daniel both assumed the function of keyboardist for the band's ninth album, Weather Systems, in 2012. The same year, Cardoso, the band's live keyboardist since 2011, joined as a full-time member. The band's tenth studio album, Distant Satellites, was released on 9 June 2014 via Kscope. Their eleventh album, The Optimist, won "Album of the Year" at the 2017 Progressive Music Awards.

Anathema Music | Liverpool Band. The Optimist out now!

optimist /ˈɒptɪmɪst/ noun: optimist; plural noun: optimists

1. a person who tends to be hopeful and confident about the future or the success of something. 2. a person who believes that this world is the best of all possible worlds or that good must ultimately prevail over evil..

The title for Anathema’s eleventh full-length would also serve well in describing the Liverpool sextet’s uncompromising dedication to fearless artistry since forming in 1990. They’ve continually evolved by placing hope in the future – from leaving the underground scene they were fundamental in establishing to continually mesmerising the world with stargazing post-progressive alternative rock that knows no borders. Led by brothers Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh, along with drummer John Douglas, singer Lee Douglas, bassist Jamie Cavanagh and keyboardist/drummer Daniel Cardoso – this is a band that have forsaken all notion of expectation – highly evocative music simply pours out of them. And in a world of plastic conformists so desperately awaiting their moment of recognition, it’s a potent truth very much needed…

“We’ve been honest with ourselves from the start in writing deeply personal music,” admits lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Vincent. “It’s just that in the earlier days, it was cloaked in heavier instrumentation. When you’re a teenager, it’s natural to want to go ‘all or nothing’. We had a 23-minute ambient piece, classical ideas, multi-layered guitar harmonies, acoustic folky stuff, reversed tape experiments, long psychedelic sections, spoken word… all of that. But we quickly learned that the best way to get to the core of emotion in music is to strip away the layers. Melody is everything, then lyrics, rhythm and bass. Is it meaningful? Does it move you? Start with that… if the answer is yes, then you can start to think about experimenting.”

Despite those early records being hailed as classics, the band left their heavier roots and transcended into a more emotional heaviness that resonated deep within the heart of the listener. Alternative 4 (1998), Judgement (1999), A Fine Day To Exit (2001) and A Natural Disaster (2003) marked an era of bold experimentation for the band – taking the notion of self-exploration to its furthest limits – before 2010’s We’re Here Because We’re Here truly cemented their stature as world-beating post-progressive kings.

“Any musical growth we have achieved has been a natural process,” says lead songwriter Daniel Cavanagh. “From our early bass player Duncan Patterson’s Pink Floyd-leanings onwards, we’ve never really looked back. We feel lucky to have developed into a writing team that at times can feel telepathic. Oh and by the way – if we wanted to sell out, we would never have changed at all.”

After 2012’s award-winning Weather Systems and 2014’s spellbinding Distant Satellites , the ambient rockers are back with their eleventh full-length, The Optimist : some of the darkest, most challenging and – quite frankly – unexpected music they’ve put their name to. It twists and turns like no album before it, bringing miraculous wide-eyed wonder to even the most well-versed of fans. Recorded in the winter of 2016 and produced by Tony Doogan [Mogwai, Belle & Sebastien, Super Furry Animals] at Attica Audio in Donegal and Castle Of Doom studios in Glasgow, the 11 tracks of The Optimist manage to somehow push more boundaries then ever before, yet remaining forever loyal to the heart of every song. It could very well be their greatest masterpiece yet – stemming from an idea first planted in the artwork for A Fine Day To Exit all those years ago. Daniel Cavanagh explains how its front cover became an unlikely source of inspiration…

“I suppose you might say the album is semi-autobiographical because this time we used a surrogate,” he says, of the character that is The Optimist. “We put sound, feelings and crucially, our own hopes and fears into another person and made him the subject of the songs. I also began to write with visual stimuli more this time, using the feelings evoked by a certain image or moment and then weaving my own internal monologue into the narrative of The Optimist . It was John’s idea to write a narrative, so I took A Fine Day To Exit as the starting point. The brilliant songs of Vincent and John fit right in… we were a single mind during this writing process.”

“The guy who disappeared – you never knew what happened to him,” shrugs Vincent. “Did he start a new life? Did he succumb to his fate? It was never explained. The opening track title is the exact coordinates for Silver Strand beach in San Diego – the last known location of The Optimist – shown on the cover of A Fine Day to Exit .”

The character’s unresolved destiny was something that fascinated the three songwriting members and together they meticulously brought the unfinished story to an end – and most strikingly of all – one which is decided by the listener.

“Most of the songs are happening within the mind of the character,” adds Daniel, “and we intentionally left things open to interpretation. His feelings, his path, his fate, are ultimately up to the listener. It is for others to fit in the missing pieces from their own narrative… these songs are ambiguous.”

From the screaming guitar-driven post-rock of Springfield to the filmscore jazz noir brilliance of Close Your Eyes to the cerebral electronica of San Francisco , The Optimist is a journey full of wonder – each track carrying a kaleidoscopic spell of its own. It also marks a darker sound for the band in quite some time – perhaps most notably Daniel’s spine-tingling vocals on Wildfires circling around haunting piano chords before Vincent warns ‘It’s too late.’ By their own admission, it’s a darkness rooted in themes around mental and emotional struggles – how all of us, in some way or another, are forced into battles we can’t tangibly see in front of us…

“There’s always been a stigma around mental health because it’s invisible,” says Daniel, “and thankfully that is changing. Many people go through this kind of thing. One in four of the population I believe… it is as normal as any other illness, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Things are better now, but the last few years haven’t been too easy and it came out in the music. I kept writing these dark piano moments like Wildfires or Springfield, which Vincent and John felt was the best material I had.”

Vincent, who undertook all of the pre-production duties in London before the band began tracking in Donegal and Glasgow, agrees there are definitely moments that feel unusually bleak and ominous in comparison to their more recent meditations. “There are moments on every song that put you on edge,” he nods. “When everything kicks in it sounds fucking massive – which, in a large part, is thanks to Tony. The first thing he suggested was the drum sound. He knew we wanted something ‘big’ so he suggested Attica, which has this enormous stone-walled live room with a high ceiling. He didn’t need to do a lot of tweaking, it already sounded massive – from there we were on to a winner. The second thing he suggested was that we record as a live band, which we hadn’t done for years. Having played a few tunes on the last tour, we were ready for that. Tony wanted to capture that energy you can only get with everyone facing each other… it makes a big difference. He was a superb guy to work with and I learned a lot making this record.”

Whatever the secret is – with undoubtedly The Album Of 2017 under their belts, it definitely seems to be working. Theirs is a name built on the most soul-baring and introspective forms of artistic expression. Rightfully so, Anathema’s shooting star looks set to burn perpetually brighter and brighter.

Rochester Jazz Festival lineup for Friday, June 28: Three shows to check out

Rochester Jazz Festival 2024: Recommendations for Friday, June 28

Laila biali.

A Canadian singer-songwriter (the festival always finds the best of these) Biali has amassed recognition and honors, including a Juno, the Canadian Grammy, for vocal jazz album of the year. It's no surprise that her career, which has taken her from Radio City Music Hall to Beijing, has brought her such widespread appreciation: Her music is steadily uplifting and often playful, though that description might belie the heart and soul at its core. Check out her YouTube video for "Got To Love" and you too will join the abundant ranks of those who are grateful for Laila Biali.

Twisted Pine

Last year was my introduction to Twisted Pine and that was enough to convince me to see them whenever they return. There is a bluegrass foundation to the music of the Boston band — the fiddling is primo— but from there it spirals ever outward, navigating universes of pop and funk. The mix is scintillating and the musicians stellar. The flute work of Anh Phung is key to the boundary-stretching approach of Twisted Pine. The flute isn't anathema to bluegrass, but it is uncommon. Twisted Pine will make you wonder why there isn't more of it.

Olatuja Project

At the second inauguration of President Barack Obama, Alicia Olatuja delivered a stunning solo as part of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s rendition of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”  Her vocals rose and her range seemed infinite, all a fitting musical moment for the historical start of the second term of the country's first Black president. That moment, perhaps, was a stepping stone to what is now obvious: Olatuja is special and her talents otherworldly. She can be ethereal and she can be earthy; she can deliver R&B and jazz-flavored tunes in a manner both grounded and spiritual. She has referred to her Inaugural moment as "validation for me as a performer." She likely did not need validation then; she surely does not need it now.

Footnote: Luca Ciarla, who I will recommend for Saturday, also performs this Friday.

Broncos Urged to Trade for Niners Disgruntled All-Pro WR

Chad jensen | 4 hours ago.

  • Denver Broncos
  • San Francisco 49ers

The Denver Broncos ' wide receiver corps has been the subject of some pathetic rankings around NFL media this offseason. Just last month, Pro Football Focus ranked Denver's receiving corps as the third-worst in the league.

With No. 1 receiver Courtland Sutton's offseason complaints still ongoing, perhaps the Broncos would be wise to be looking around for a potential contingency plan. One such possibility would be San Francisco 49ers disgruntled wideout Brandon Aiyuk, and Mile High Sports ' Rich Kurtzman is urging the Broncos to give them a call.

Aiyuk has become increasingly frustrated with a lack of a deal and has even helped build the trade rumors. And the Denver Broncos should be on the phone with San Francisco about him. But are they? -  Rich Kurtzman

My guess is, no, the Broncos aren't calling the Niners about Aiyuk, although the two clubs have traditionally had very open and productive lines of communication. With Sutton still in the fold and only requiring, reportedly, something like a $3 million raise, the better question is whether the Broncos actually need Aiyuk.

"But Aiyuk had north of 1,300 receiving yards last year," you might be thinking, and "no Broncos receiver even topped 800 yards in 2023." True and true, but we're comparing apples and oranges. The Niners have a high-volume passing attack quarterbacked by Brock Purdy, who is a faithful extension on the field of his head coach and play-caller Kyle Shanahan.

The Broncos believe they got their quarterback to serve as that self-same extension of Sean Payton in Bo Nix. Nix has a quick processor, gets rid of the ball quickly and accurately, and doesn't take sacks.

Even with the expected bumps along the trial-and-error learning curve, Nix under center represents a massive upgrade for the Broncos offense as designed and called by Payton. Russell Wilson was anathema to Payton and how his scheme is supposed to operate, traditionally.

Timing, rhythm, pace, accuracy, discipline, production — these are the hallmarks of a Payton offense. How many of them would you find to be synonymous with Wilson?

I digress. The point is that Nix's arrival will be a windfall for certain receivers in Denver, and Sutton is poised to be the guy who benefits the most. Yes, the Broncos need to get Sutton taken care of and fully woven back into the fold, but that is expected to happen before training camp later this month.

At 6-foot-0 and 200 pounds, Aiyuk is an intriguing receiver. But he wants to get paid. The Broncos are already cap-strapped and have a receiver who is similiarly speaking out of school about his financial demands.

Aiyuk wants the Niners to show him the money. And yet, he still expects to play for the Niners this yea r.

Aiyuk would also come at a cost to the Broncos beyond the contractual. What's the going rate on the trade market for a second-team All-Pro coming off of a 1,300-yard receiving campaign?

Whatever it is, it's more than what the still rebuilding Broncos can probably afford, especially after investing two 2024 draft picks in the position — Troy Franklin and Devaughn Vele.

If it happened, by all means, who wouldn't welcome Aiyuk into the Broncos fold? He's a great player. But should it happen? Probably not. Denver has bigger fish to fry.

Will it happen? Again, probably not.
