Gozo Tour: Top 10+ Day Trips, Tours and Excursions to Take

Taking an exciting day trip to Gozo during your vacation in Malta is a great idea. Malta’s sister island is a haven for the whole family, friends and anyone wishing to experience a more rural setting and a quieter, more laid-back way of living in the Maltese Islands.

It’s also super easy to get to Gozo: it is just a short 25-minute ferry ride away from the mainland. Several tour operators will help you make the best of your time in Gozo, with some even offering direct transfers to Gozo from various locations in Malta.

With this in mind, in the next sections of this guide, I’ll give you my best recommendations for the best Gozo tour options, day trips, and excursions on offer.

The best Gozo day trips

For these particular Gozo tours and excursions, you have the option to add a transfer with the tour bookings against an extra fee. However, you can also choose to make your own way to the sister island by car or taking public transport .

If you’re prepared to undertake the journey to Gozo by yourself, you can find all the details here: How to catch the Gozo ferry.

Gozo Tuk Tuk

Tuk Tuks are cute little carriages-turned-cars and are a great way to explore Gozo.

Quad Bike Tours

A great alternative way to visit Gozo is by taking a Quad bike tour (which you drive yourself, accompanied by a knowledgeable tour guide) around different sites and locations. You’ll get to see rarely-visited spots, and you can take in your beautiful surroundings at your own pace.

This tour allows a driver and up to one passenger to drive around Gozo on Quad bike where you’ll get to places regular vehicles can’t and get some off-roading adventure in!

You get a safety briefing from a safety officer, who will lead the tour after the briefing. Prices include pick-up from and return to your accommodation in Gozo or Malta, as well as a traditional Gozitan lunch, fuel, equipment – everything you need. If you’re staying in Malta, you’ll be transferred to the Gozo Channel ferry in Ċirkewwa and returned to Malta via motorboat (passing by the Blue Lagoon Malta in Comino).

You will visit the capital Victoria and marvel at the fortified Citadel , view and take photos of the beautiful Dwejra Bay with its famous Fungus Rock and Inland Sea, look up at the imposing cliffs in Xlendi Bay , and visit the world’s oldest, freestanding, man-made structures that are Ġgantija Temples (unavailable on Mondays and Fridays – you will visit the Basilica in Għarb instead).

The best Gozo boat tours and day trips from Malta

Private boat tours from mġarr harbour (gozo) or ċirkewwa.

Fancy a more exclusive boat trip to Gozo? If your budget allows it, I highly recommend booking this full-day 8-hour private boat tour.

For starters, you’ll have the boat all to yourself and your group (alongside the skipper). What’s more, you can customise the trip to your liking and have the opportunity to spend more time in certain spots.

You’ll also get to beat the crowds heading to Blue Lagoon on a hot summer’s day. You can choose your own stop, relax, and enjoy your time there. Finally, you’ll get to explore caves, snorkel in secluded spots and the best-hidden beaches that only locals would know about.

Boat tours to Gozo from Buġibba

If you’re staying in Buġibba or anywhere nearby e.g. Qawra, Mellieħa, Xemxija, or St. Paul’s Bay), this Blue Lagoon/Gozo combo tour is a great way for you to get to see Gozo and Comino (and it’s Blue Lagoon) on the same day. There are two options:

  • Taking the larger catamaran with underwater windows, ladders and slides
  • Taking the smaller Sea Odyssey boat trip, which is also a great choice (and a little quieter)

Both boats have jumping platforms, sun loungers, changing areas, separate toilets, a bar, and even air-conditioning to cool down when needed.

You’ll see Malta’s beautiful coastline up close, with a stopover at the Blue Lagoon for some fun in the sea and sun. Then, you’ll travel to Gozo (Mġarr Harbour), where you can spend around three hours exploring and enjoying this stunning island before heading back to Buġibba.

In Gozo, you can:

  • Make your own way to a few places by taxi or hop-on/hop-off bus
  • Take organised transport to either Victoria (the main town in the centre of Gozo) or Xlendi (a picturesque bay in the South of Gozo flanked by tall cliffs).

As a side note, do remember that while the Catamaran is wheelchair accessible, Comino itself is not, so this may be an issue for some visitors. Also, a multilingual audio guide is available.

Time: Approx. 7 hours

Boat tours to Gozo from Sliema

If your accommodation is in Sliema or close by, this round-trip cruise is a great way to make the most of the different lagoons, bays, and natural sights in Gozo while enjoying the refreshing sea breeze.

The tour will take you by Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian’s, St. Paul’s Bay and St. Paul’s Islands, Mellieħa Bay, and eventually moor at one of the secluded bays in Gozo. Here, you will enjoy eating delicious food, sunbathing, diving, and swimming.

Following lunch, you’ll be taken to the small island of Comino. Here, you’ll anchor at the famous Blue Lagoon, where you’ll be free to relax and swim some more against the backdrop of stunning azure waters.

On the boat, you’ll be provided with a morning snack, lunch, drinks, and fresh fruit, and also have the availability to use the toilets and showers on board.

You can choose to be taken back to your accommodation in Malta. If you choose to get a transfer, you can book one ahead of time for a fee. The price also includes a tour of the Comino Caves by powerboat.

Price per person: €70 for the whole day for adults, with children 12 and under at €45. The fee for accommodation transfer starts from €60.

Time: Approx. 8 hours

Alternatively, travellers can take a day trip tour starting from Sliema and going Eastwards past Comino to Gozo.

On the way, you’ll see the beautiful Maltese and Gozitan coastlines, pass by Dwejra Bay and the famous Fungus Rock, and experience the beauty of the salt pans in Marsalforn.

You’ll also pass through the popular beach with red sand, known as Ramla Bay (possibly stopping for a swim if the weather conditions allow it), and marvel at the natural awe of the imposing Ta’ Ċenċ cliffs.

Finally, the boat will drop anchor at the stunning Blue Lagoon in Comino, where you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of your day swimming, relaxing, sunbathing, and enjoying the crystal-clear waters.

You’ll be provided with drinks and lunch and have use of the onboard toilet and shower facilities. Furthermore, if you want to get a transfer to your accommodation, you can do so by booking in advance and at an extra small fee.

Price per person: €70 for the whole day for adults, with children between 4-12 at €45. The fee for accommodation transfer is €6.

Time: Approx. 7.5 hours

Boat tours to Gozo from St. Julian’s

Since there are no direct ferries between St. Julian’s and Gozo, you will have to opt for either public buses, a taxi ride or a long (30-40 min) walk.

Your best bet is to catch a bus (routes 13, 13A, 14, 16, or 22) that will take you to Sliema where you can easily hop on a boat tour.

You can also choose to make your way to the Gozo ferry in Ċirkewwa either via taxi or by taking a bus. You’ll need to look out for bus route 222.

Boat tours to Gozo from Valletta

Taking the ferry from Valletta to Sliema is the better way to go as you avoid going through all the different localities and stopping at different bus stops.

You can do this by going to the West-facing (Marsamxett) Harbourside of Valletta (look for Boat Street on Google Maps for the exact location), where the ferry to Sliema moors. Bus 133 takes you directly to this location if you stop at ‘Mandraġġ’ bus stop.

The ferry will directly take you from one harbour in Valletta to the opposite side at the spot known as Sliema Ferries.

Apart from taking a taxi from Valletta to Ċirkewwa, you can catch the bus from the main bus terminus in Valletta. Buses 41 and 42 will take you to your destination. Once you’re in Gozo, you can then join a tour from the harbour in Mġarr.
