Coffee Farms Tours in Colombia: the ultimate top 5

coffe tour la palma

  • September 7, 2021 10:38 pm

If there’s something that makes Colombia famous around the globe, is its coffee. The joy behind a cup of coffee is a unique feeling that’s hard to repeat, but when it comes to Colombian coffee, having a cup becomes a whole new experience.

If you’re a coffee lover, you probably have tasted lots of good coffees all around the globe, some stronger than others. So, what makes Colombian coffees so special? Where does the good flavor come from? The secret is in the ground, in the land where the farms are located all over the country.

Colombia has the fortune of having three branches of the Andean Mountains: the eastern, central, and western  cordilleras . This formation has blessed us with lots of different climates, that ultimately result in amazing fruits, some of the best flora and fauna, and of course, the most delicious coffee in the world.

Some people say that having a Colombian coffee is more like tasting wine than having a regular cup of joe. The uniqueness relies on the flavors and sensations that one cup can give you. Maybe you don’t taste anything specific but somehow, you’re reminded of a very special fruit or cake you used to love… that sensation is thanks to the flavors of Colombia.

Now, if you’re traveling around the country and want to live a coffee experience, we have  fincas  or farms wherever you go. Whether you want a premium experience, or something more casual, we have found the best options for you. You can adjust any of these to your calendar or your route and live an unforgettable experience.

Hacienda Coloma

This farm is located 90 minutes away from Bogota and is a hidden gem within a small city called Fusagasuga. The farm itself is a nice place to visit to enjoy nature, but luckily for those staying in Bogota, is also great to learn about coffee.

In the farm you’ll be able to walk through the process of coffee making, and if you’re lucky, even pick some coffee beans to recreate the production that takes place in the farm. While you’re in the tour, you’ll also learn about traditions and even see why the jeeps are so important for the farmers when it comes to coffee production.

What’s so especial about this farm, is the liquor they have created with their own coffee. A sweet and unique beverage that could be perfect for a souvenir, or just to remember Colombia when you’re back home.

La Palma y el Tucán

A premium experience that offers lodging and coffee tours in an agroecological farm. This eco hotel is located near a small town called Zipacón, and it isn’t an ordinary hotel. The rooms are actually cabins with balconies, all with amazing views of the mountains nearby.

If you wish, you can only be part of their coffee tours, which include a walk around their coffee plantations, all with different characteristics, and finish preparing your own cup of coffee with the guidance of a professional barista.

The particular thing about this farm is the care that they put into their plantation in order to make it ecological, and to keep the best qualities of the coffee in every cup.

Hacienda El Roble, Café Mesa de los Santos

Farther away from Bogota, in the capital of adventure of Colombia, Santander, you’ll find Hacienda El Roble. This place offers lodging, perfect if you want to live a special coffee experience one day before heading to the airport to continue your trip.

It is a 320 hectares farm full of diversity and wildlife. In their tours you’ll learn about organic farming practices that have been part of their coffee production for 20 years. Here you can also find two types of tours: one regular and one premium. The first one includes coffee tasting and a visit through their own coffee museum. The second one also includes a tasting, the visit in the coffee museum, plus a short Safari Jeep ride, food, fruits, and a visit to a 360 viewpoint.

If you want to visit the farm and enjoy the coffee tours, keep in mind that extra transportation will be needed.

Finca El Ocaso

Deep in the coffee heart of Colombia, Finca El Ocaso represents the traditions of the area. This farm is 5km away from Salento, a small town full of color and colonial houses, and it offers lodging as well as coffee tours.

Given the distance from the farm to other places, if you’re traveling with a car, it could be a nice place to stay. On the other hand, if you’re traveling by bus, reaching the farm will require extra transportation that can be found in the small town of Salento, where you can stay and find other activities.

The coffee tours available in English start at 2 pm or 4 pm, it depends on what you want to learn. The tour that starts at 2 is a premium experience where you get to learn about the coffee production but also join a coffee laboratory to learn about tasting. The tour that starts at 4 is dedicated to the process of transforming the seed of coffee into a cup, without the tasting experience.

So, if you’re planning on going to Salento, visiting this farm could be part of your itinerary.

Join us!  Coffee Farm Hacienda El Ocaso Half-Day Tour

Finca Café San Alberto

This coffee has been awarded as one of the best coffees in Colombia for many years, and its farm is also fighting to get the same title. Located in the opposite direction of Salento, Hacienda San Alberto is in Buenavista, hidden among the mountains and surrounded by the greenest landscapes you could imagine.

To visit this farm is to go deeper into the heart of the coffee region and witness the authentic traditions of the locals. Walk up the mountain to sit in their shop, enjoy a coffee tasting and let your senses be delighted with the amazing views from the top of the hill.

The San Alberto Farm allows you to have a sneak peek behind the magic of one of the highest quality coffees you’ll ever taste. Learn about methods, beans, and flavors while sinking in the magic of Colombia.

Interior of tables and counter at Rayco Rodriguez’s El Cafe de Don Manuel in La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain.

Spain’s best coffee? Get your shot at La Palma's award-winning hotspot

On the Canary Island of La Palma, the owner of the small, sustainably run El Cafe de Don Manuel makes espressos and barraquitos that buzz with life

L a Palma is the unlikely home of one of Spain’s best baristas. Though hiking and stargazing in this most northwesterly Canary Island have been heralded, it has never flickered on the coffee scene. Yet in a cool courtyard off handsome Calle Pérez de Brito in its tiny capital, Santa Cruz, is El Cafe de Don Manuel, owned by one Rayco Rodriguez.

Rayco Rodriguez, owner of El Cafe de Don Manuel, which as won several awards for its coffee, holds up a cup of espresso.

Since he set up shop two years ago, this gentle giant has been collecting coffee awards. Displayed alongside some enticing cakes, Rayco’s most notable trophies include one for best espresso at the Spanish Barista Championship in 2015, and another for being among 2016’s top three baristas nationwide.

His signature brew is a Canaries-style barraquito : milky coffee with cinnamon, lemon peel and citrussy liqueur. Served in bubbly, pepper-mill-shaped glasses, it has distinct layers, each a different shade of caramel, and costs €1.90. Those acclaimed espressos are just 90 cents.

Quality is assured, too: the 100% arabica beans hail from Hacienda Supracafe on south-west Colombia’s high Popayán plateau. Supracafe is a Spanish firm committed as much to improving the lives of its coffee-growing stakeholders – via training and house-building – as to its organic, top-notch production.

El Cafe de Don Manuel counter. La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain.

Back in La Palma, all of Rayco’s eight tables are taken by late morning. Above them, great ferns dangle from rafters and the courtyard’s wooden balconies – typical of Santa Cruz – give off a smoky aroma.

From Seed to Cup - Coffee Farm Experience at La Palma & El Tucán

Small group.

Enjoy the nature at a beautiful Coffee Farm outside Bogotá. Learn how they are cultivating coffee, fruits, and vegetables and indulge in a fresh locally sourced meal.

$654USD Per person

Description

Important information, additional information, cancellation policies.

We live in a country of misty mountains, valleys, very rich soil, and hardworking people. All that together creates the perfect conditions for growing coffee. This has been a major development driver and a reason for pride for every Colombian. As a result, we are one of the main coffee producers and we grow the best arabica coffee worldwide. With just a 2-hour drive southwest of Bogotá, the weather gets warmer and an awarded high-quality coffee is grown carefully among steep mountains, dense native forests, and low-flying clouds. La Palma & El Tucán is a self-sustained farm that not only produces specialty coffee but they also benefit coffee-growing families in the region, supporting fair-trade and eco-farming.  As you reach the destination, you will feel a slight change in temperature; a few degrees warmer at approx. 1600 MASL which opens the possibility of coffee growing close to the big city. Among lush green mountains and slow-paced clouds, you will enter the farm, passing through their specialty coffee plantations until you reach the coffee bar area. You will be greeted with a warm, fresh and aromatic welcome: a special coffee brewed carefully to highlight the exquisite flavors of Colombian Coffee. After enjoying your coffee and being introduced to the place, you will receive an explanation of how they benefit local farmers by purchasing their best quality cherries. The farm buys at the best international price and runs workshops on organic fertilizers and best soil management for the farmers. You will witness the different stages of the coffee process - starting with the seeds, moving on to transplantation, crops and harvest. You will visit the organic compost shed and production warehouse and visit the machinery behind the process and learn the steps needed to turn recently picked coffee beans into the coffee you see packaged on the markets.  Finally, you will be taken to take a delicious lunch prepared with many ingredients found in the farm. Afterwards, you can enjoy the interactive approach tasting 3 different coffees learning more from the local guide before returning to Bogotá along an impressive scenic drive.

How this tour creates an impact La Palma y el Tucán is not only a breathtakingly beautiful place to develop a deep understanding of coffee but is also a community-driven social project. By selling their coffee, called neighbors & crops, they support smaller, neighboring coffee farmers. Often smaller coffee producers struggle to create a sustainable business around commercializing their product. La Palma y el Tucán offers a solution to this problem by taking over the logistics of distributing and processing the coffee so that farmers can focus on the quality of their product.

Things to bring:

Sandra and her 10 minutes before and her team are by far the most incredible, attentive, responsive, and supportive people I have ever met. They spent plenty of time with me To review all the options and better understand what I am seeking to experience, and then every step of the way they were checking in with me to ensure that everything is going smoothly, I would highly recommend them and I myself forward to coming back on another adventure with them! It was an impressive site to see those Tepuyes from the distance as colossal nature built buildings on a flat rug of thousand of square kilometers of trees. There is actually a spider specie that only lives there! Exchanging with the indigenous communities that live there was also an amazing feature of the trip, and understanding their vision of the cosmos. The organization of the trip was really good. The itinerary, security and add -ins all make for a super special and memorable trip. Read more Written 1 August 2022

We stayed in a cute hostel (which is included) had great food (also included) and did beautiful hikes! The acclimatisation hike is easy and the main hike to pulpito del diablo is just beautiful! The path itself is not hard, just the altitude is making it exhausting. In the Village we did a handcrafts workshop about traditional weaving (included ;) aswell, which was super interesting. We had a nice guide and estefania of Frontera travel took great care of us. Thanks for the experience Read more Written 15 February 2022

  • Gammakappa 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Colombia Tour 2020 We did an organized trip via Frontera travel in cooperation with Blue Tulip's owned by my Dutch friend BertJan. Estefania Bautista was my daily contactperson at Frontera. She was always available anb informed us every day about the program, names of drivers, guides, etc. Fantastic! We started in Bogotá, after that Coffee area with Filandia, Salento and Cocora valley, followed by Medellin, Santa Marta (Tayrona) and Cartagena. All locations appr. three days stay. Our guides (Alex/Bogota/historian - Jhon/Cocora and fincadelcafe/biologist - Ariana/Medellin - Oralis/Cartagena) were great, special mentioning for ALex and Jhon, well educated on their specialty and very passionate. Also great English talking! All accomodations were very good and comfortable. The transfers (nice drivers) and flights well arranged. Just two tips on locations: Pereira is not interesting, the Hotel good but huge. For Pereira I would find an accomodation in fantastic Fliandia. Only half an hour from the airport and MUCH nicer and close to the Cocora and coffee. In Bogota the location of Hotel Augusta was very good, but something in Candelaria maybe would be a little nicer. Further no improvements to suggest. Colombia stole our hearts. People, culture, nature, variety, wow...Thank you Estefania and BertJan ! Read more Written 4 March 2020
  • soniaaW9553PK 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Bio-reserve Lagos de Menegua - was beyond believe We really enjoyed our latest experience in Colombia. We love the country and since we found Frontera Travel we always like to book with them. They will design the trip for you according to your needs and wants, always taking into consideration the environment and the communities. This time we decided to go to los Llanos, a region in Colombia less known for foreigners but recognized in Colombia to have the most beautiful sunsets and sunrises in the country, having a cowboy culture, with vast plains and impressive grasslands, with very unique wildlife. For a taste of its culture we recommend Lagos de Menegua, a family friendly ranch and also a bio-reserve, with a hotel with a big swimming pool, rooms with air conditioning and all the comfort you want to enjoy while doing all the activities that the Hotel has to offer. The property is huge and gives the possibility for horse-back riding, enjoy a walk though beautiful paths, full of nature, including birds, monkeys, and if luck deers! Our kids, age 3 and 6 loved the experience. The hotel organizes also tours to a close-by river where you can see Pink Dolphings just as the amazons! Read more Written 28 February 2020
  • DianaN026 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful New Experiences!! I wanted a new experience for my holiday break, spoke to Frontera travel and they understood exactly what I was looking for. I went to BAHIA SOLANO for New Year’s, the experience was incredible. Everything was organized, transportation, hotel, meals, activities. Met new friends that were also traveling with Frontera Travel. After Bahia Solano, I went to JARDIN, ANTIOQUIA. Again, everything was booked and ready. Walks, restaurants, outside activities. From the beginning until the end of my trips, I didn’t have to worry about anything, the service was clear, punctual and very easy. I have to say that traveling with them has been one of the best experiences of my life, in every way! Finding someone that understands your needs and organizes your trip according to that is priceless!! I can’t wait to organize my next get-away with them!! 100% recommended! • Quest475487 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Lagos de Menegua After marrying in mid December 2019 we knew exactly where to go for our honeymoon. Frontera Travel took care of our stay in Colombia, from Bogotá’s Calendaria District where we visited the Gold Museum, toured the 7th Av cultural and historic path to Plaza Bolivar. Then for a change of scenery to a place few outside the locals know about: Lagos de Menegua Ecological Hotel in the Llanos. A fabulous encounter with nature where various animals and birds find refuge. Audubon members, this is a must! New bird species are the hope for a resilient world, and this spot in the center of Colombia proclaims the sound and sight like no other. A cabalgata to the rolling hills, kayaking and walks through tunnels of thick forest where monkeys often visit the hotel grounds is some of the charm of this country that is known as one of the most biodiverse on earth. • K7020GSrodrigom 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Bahia Solano New Year's Eve on Colombia's Pacific Coast, mind-blowing! I booked with Frontera Travel a trip to Bahia Solano in Colombia for New Year’s Eve 2020. Coming from Washington DC, I was concerned about security and tidiness of accommodations in a remote area. From the first contact the staff was very courteous walking me through the various options that suit my interests and updating me on details about security. In turned out to be safer than most other places I’ve visited in South America and an amazing experience, completely different and unique compared to the crowded Caribbean Coast. The field trips arranged by the company took us deep into pristine forests and rivers and safely into probably the most biodiverse natural park in Colombia in the most biodiverse region in the world, Ensenada de Utria, mind-blowing!. And the New Year’s event with a local Afro-colombian traditional chants and dance group, ended up surprisingly in an epic dance party for all os us. I highly recommend Frontera Travel for non-traditional destinations. Read more Written 8 January 2020
  • Oleebg 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles La Guajira and Ciudad Perdida - perfect! Frontera organized for me the three day/2-night trip to La Guajira, followed by a rest in Santa Marta, then followed by the Ciudad Perdida 4-day trek. They are incredibly efficient, professional and knowledgeable, and also very responsive; everything was sorted quickly and easily, and they really knew their stuff. They also work with the most sustainable and eco-friendly agencies, something even more important in these beautiful but fragile areas of Colombia. As for the trips themselves, both are beautiful but very distinct. La Guiajira is a trip into the desert and the Wayuu indigenous culture - beautiful landscape, though the poverty would not be expected if you did not know already. The trip is in comfortable 4 wheel drives with knowledgeable guides. La Ciudad Perdida is a trek, not an easy one either, but fantastic mountain scenery and views, with - once again - some insight (respectfully) into the four indigenous groups that live in the mountains. Both trips were very well organised, good food, good advice and - for those wondering about Colombia especially - with safety and (relative, of course) comfort, taken seriously.... Highly recommended? Read more Written 6 January 2020
