1967 FAN Coach Travel Trailer... Rare, Vintage, Retro, and RENOVATED!

1967 FAN Coach Travel Trailer... Rare, Vintage, Retro, and RENOVATED!

Dallas, Texas

0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false 1967 FAN Coach Travel Trailer STUNNING FINISH OUT and waiting for its new and only 3rd owner! I am the 2nd owner and still friends with the original owners, so new owner will have provenance and lineage, as well as a clear title and ALL owner's manuals and FULL tour of this 20-foot, 30-amp trailer with its gorgeous, functional nuances. I have personally lived in this trailer for 3 months as an experiment in the Great Outdoors having my own existential Walden Pond Experience. As a result, I built EXTRA storage, as if the FAN didn't already have enough, for my living convenience. This is NOT your typical vintage-retro travel trailer. This was renovated with both a female and a male in mind! The electronic-friendly upgrades ALONE make it a primo man-cave. The eye for gender-neutral décor, kitchen upgrades, and storage GALORE with a wet-bath make this fun retro trailer the envy of every campsite, rally, tailgate party, or if you are a Sister on the Fly! You cannot find new trailers with these types of upgrades! The new flooring and subflooring alone make this gem way sturdier than most new trailers. Time and again, I heard men and women of all ages, tell me that the 20-foot size of the trailer was perfect for a single person to get around in without additional assistance. In fact, many folks stated that they wished they had not gone with a 30-40 foot rig at all. BOTH GENDERS loved this trailer, but especially the fact that the trailer takes all of 10 minutes for a thorough Spring-cleaning. Since my Walden experiment, this cute-as-a-button and highly functional trailer has been winterized and stored in an indoor storage facility along the likes of celebrity-owned Class A motor coaches. Yup, that's how this trailer rolls! For a detailed history and discussion of the rarity of FAN travel trailers, please check out the FaceBook page for FAN Camper Trailers, as links are not permissible on ebay.Because FANs are very RARE. . . most don't even know that the FAN Coach Travel Trailers were the first to include an all inclusive wet-bath. Yes, even before Airstreams. For the FAN aficionado, there is a FaceBook Group listed above, as well as a Yahoo Group for your viewing/lurking pleasure. It's where the cool vintage trailer kids hang out. Original, Operational FAN Features: • Vintage lamps over dinette and back couch, both of which convert to double beds • Never-been-used, Pristine Vintage Gas Lamp over Center of Dinette with original filament and Pyrex glass "shade", with ½ frosted base. • Vintage Magazine Rack with Signature "F" • Vintage Gas Stove and Oven by Trav'ler with Vintage Overhead Vent • Vintage Doors, Cabinets, Benches, Drawers, and all hardware • Vintage Bathroom Light, Mirror, Sink, and Mirror Hardware • Vintage Louvered Windows and Hand Cranks • Vintage Dinette Table and Hardware • Vintage Cushions that have all been reupholstered • Vintage Privacy Wall Screen/Curtain for Back Couch/Bed • Vintage Brand Plates • Vintage Front Window Guard • Vintage Owner's Manual with ALL Brochures, even for appliances that are no longer in the FAN, like the gas furnace! Updated FAN Features: • Carrier AC Air V for RV (large enough for a 40-footer, so plenty of power), with Air Shower Function for ridiculous Texas summers. • Atwood PAN ASM 6-Gallon Water Heater with interior and exterior access installed. This WH is dual functioning gas or electric -- gas lines simply need to be hooked up. . . I never ran out of hot water, ever. . . and I like hot showers and sterile dishes. • Battery Doc 1.25 Amp Battery Charger for lead acid/gel 12-volt batteries (as back-up for water heater -- this battery charger is a trickle charger that recharges itself whenever the 30-amp is hooked up). • Swiveling Wall Mount for Flat-screen TV, can face the back or the front of the trailer. • Rocketfish 7-Outlet Surge Protector • VRCD500-SDU AM/FM Receiver, Mp3/CD/WMA Player with RDS, remotes, and with surround sound installed • Pioneer Speakers • Carefree of Colorado RV Awning (professionally installed and attached) • Sub-Flooring and Floors • Styrofoam-type Insulation under Kitchen Cabinetry and Back Couch (with NEW finished seamed flooring underneath for extra storage, as well as interior or exterior access to that storage) • Kitchen Counters • Kitchen Sink Hardware • Magic Chef Microwave and Fridge • Clothes closet next to appliances now has 2 removable panels for easy access to those appliances in case of repair. • Recessed Ceiling and Cabinetry Lighting • Ceiling Treatment • Thetford Toilet • Showerhead • Shower Curtain • Brand new system installed for hosing out the black-water tank from the exterior!!! • Water censor for tank area in case one prefers to leave sewer valve shut instead of open while at campsite. • Refinished wet-bath floors and all seams caulked in wet-bath • Newly Upholstered cushions • Wall guards for back futon/couch slide out • Brocaded Window Coverings • Window Blinds (behind window treatments) • Window Screens • New False Floor in one of Dinette Benches for extra storage over all of the gas lines and water heater wires. • 4 Brand new, never-been-used camping chairs with totes • Coleman Camping Lantern (with small propane canisters) and extra catalytic heating unit • All New Owner's Manuals, extra leftover wallpaper and pin-striping included The Sticker PRICE: Asking price is $15,000 for the 1967 FAN Coach Travel Trailer. There is one area behind the back couch cushion of the FAN that could use some re-wallpapering if you want a quick fix, or if up for a DIY project, the wall could be resurfaced with a resin epoxy before the wallpapering. For this one reason alone, the price is not listed at $20,000, giving you AMPLE wiggle room for the repair, as the repair should not cost anywhere near $5,000 to complete. This list price of $15,000 is a very competitive comp and very much in line with what is on the market currently for like product and condition. Enjoy the pictures and have a great day! Upon pick-up, I will be happy to give you a thorough tour of the FAN. P.S. Thank you for looking at and admiring my 1967 FAN Coach Travel Trailer! I look forward to hearing from you if you are as passionate about preserving the heritage of vintage travel trailers as I am!

The Best RV Roof Vents & Fans

fan travel trailer

The lid of your RV roof vent wears down over time. It sits in direct sunlight and can also be damaged by falling debris. Below are a few tips to help you maximize the life of your RV roof vent and fan:

  • Cover your RV . When your RV is in storage longer than a few weeks, use an RV cover to keep your vent lids out of direct sunlight and protected from falling debris.
  • Inspect it seasonally. Safely ascend to your RV’s roof (as long as it’s fully walkable) to visually inspect the vent lid in the spring and fall. Look for cracks in the lid and missing or damaged sealant around the vent’s base.
  • Clean the screen. Use a vacuum to remove dirt and debris from the vent screen before and after each trip. This reduces the potential for large debris to get caught and damage your vent fan.
  • Keep it closed in transit. Leaving your vent lid open while you’re traveling significantly increases the risk of it cracking or breaking.

When you ascend to your roof to inspect your vent lid seasonally, it’s the perfect time to conduct a full RV roof inspection. Read our tutorial on everything to check on your RV’s roof.

When to Upgrade Your RV Roof Vent Fan

upgrade-rv-roof-vents-and-fans-06-2023

When you notice damage to your vent lid, that’s the obvious sign that it’s time to upgrade. But you can decide whether you simply want to install a replacement vent lid or upgrade the entire roof vent and fan assembly.

Here are a few other reasons to consider upgrading your RV roof vent fan:

  • Better ventilation. You want the ability to open your roof vent and operate the fan when it’s raining.
  • Quieter operation. Many upgraded roof vent fans operate much more quietly than the stock fan your RV came with.
  • Roof maintenance. If you own your RV long enough, there comes a time when you’ll need to have your roof resealed. This is an excellent opportunity to upgrade your roof vent fan.

The Best RV Roof Vents and Fans from Camping World

When you’ve decided it’s time to upgrade your RV roof vents and fans, here are our favorites:

MaxxFan Deluxe Manual Roof Vent Fan

maxxfan-deluxe-manual-rv-roof-vents-fans-06-2023

  • Fan Rating: 900 cubic feet per minute (CFM)
  • Dimensions: 23” L x 16.4” W x 5” H (closed) and 9.3” H (opened)
  • Fit: Standard 14” x 14” roof vent opening

The manual MaxxFan Deluxe is an upgrade from stock roof vent fans. It easily integrates into your RV’s 12-volt electrical system and offers four fan speeds you can cycle between using the ceiling keypad controls.

The lid opens manually but features improved rain protection compared to standard vent lids. It also features two lid-lifting arms instead of one, which provides more protection if you leave the lid open in high winds.

Learn more about the MaxxFan Deluxe RV Ventilator System.

MaxxFan 4-Speed Roof Vent Fan

maxxfan-4-speed-rv-roof-vents-fans-06-2023

MaxxFan’s 4-speed vent fan doesn’t offer as much rain protection as the Deluxe models, but the fan is still a significant upgrade over many stock models. It has four fan speeds that you can select using the keypad controls on the unit.

The fan operates with the lid open or closed, and it features two lifting arms for better durability and wind protection. The vent fan flange is also designed with waterproof mounted molding tabs that allow you to install MaxxAir’s Fan Mate cover for added rain protection.

MaxxFan Deluxe Remote Control RV Roof Vent Fan

maxxfan-deluxe-remote-rv-roof-vents-fans-06-2023

If you like the manual MaxxFan Deluxe but want additional functionality, this model features a remote control for easier operation. Choose from the fan’s 10 different speeds and adjust the lid from the comfort of your RV’s sofa .

It still features the ceiling keypad controls to provide the flexibility to adjust the fan in two places. It’s also one of the easiest fans to maintain because it has an insect screen that can be removed and cleaned by loosening and removing four dedicated retaining knobs.

Check out the remote control MaxxFan Deluxe.

Dometic Fan-Tastic Roof Vent

dometic-fan-tastic-rv-roof-vents-fans-06-2023

  • Fan Rating: 920 cubic feet per minute (CFM)

Dometic’s Fan-Tastic RV roof vent features a 12”, 10-blade fan with low, medium, and high speed settings. It’s quieter than most stock roof vent fans and features integrated tabs that allow you to mount Dometic’s Ultra Breeze vent cover.

The Fan-Tastic fan also boasts a reverse switch that allows you to spin the fan in opposite directions for better air intake or exhaust. The fan operates with the manual lid open or closed.

Dometic Fan-Tastic Roof Vent with Remote Control

dometic-fan-tastic-remote-rv-roof-vents-fans-06-2023

Dometic’s upgraded Fan-Tastic roof vent fan features 14 fan speed settings and the same forward or reverse airflow control as their standard model. This version has a remote control and a built-in thermostat for easier operation.

The thermostat signals the fan’s control board to open the lid and turn on the fan when your RV’s internal temperature exceeds your thermostat setting. It also boasts a built-in rain sensor that closes the lid and turns off the fan automatically when it gets wet, and reopens the lid when it dries out.

Ensuring adequate ventilation in your RV is a big deal. It’ll help you maintain a comfortable temperature and evacuate lingering odors from cooking and your RV bathroom. Here are a few more useful resources to help you keep your RV’s interior comfortable:

I have two MaxxFan Deluxe Manual Roof Vent Fans and the circuit boards that control fan no longer work. They were designed with no moisture protection and voltage sensitive to where the fans no longer operate. I would never suggest buying this product. I have one Domestic Fantastic manual fan that is much older and works perfectly and has for years. What a difference in quality and support, Dometic at one time had lifetime support and warranty, but times have changed, buyer be ware.

The Savvy Campers

The Savvy Campers

fan travel trailer

The Best RV Vent Fans: Reviewed for 2023

An aftermarket vent fan for your travel trailer or RV can give you much more airflow than your stock fan and also give you additional options such as a fan reverse function that will blow air into the coach either acting as a ceiling fan with the vent closed, or if you have two fans, one can run forward and one reverse to quickly exchange the airflow in your unit.

With our extensive research both online and hands-on with some of these products, we believe the MaxxFan 7500 to be the best vent fan on the market today.

Our Top Pick

The Maxxfan 7500 is perfect if your trailer is hot and you need to exchange the air with outside air, and quickly. It moves 900 cfm per minute. A 20′ trailer has about 1,000 cubic feet or less of air in it meaning that you can totally replace the stagnate hot air in your trailer in just a hair more than 1 minute of use.

Not only does this act as an exhaust fan, but it can be reversed to act as a ceiling fan to help move heat around in the winter or simply move air around. This unit has a remote control and electric lifting lid that has a rain cover lets you have fresh air in the rain. This unit will take some time and tools to install, but is well worth it.

Maxx Air 00-07500K MaxxFan Deluxe with Remote - Smoke, Black

Last update on 2024-05-11 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

The is our runner up as it is also a great fan with similar features such as a remote control, reversible fan operation, automatic lid opening and closing, and has the availability to move lots of air like our top pick. There is one major difference that makes this our runner up option. This unit has a rain sensor that can close the lid if it rains. This stops your supply of fresh air in the rain and does not reopen. If you have pets in your unit and are gone, this can be a problem. There is an available rain shield, but it is another item to buy and install. This also requires some time to install just like our top pick.

Budget Pick

Our budget pick is the Hengs 90046 not only because it is less money, but it is also a direct drop in replacement. All you need to do is hook up power and you utilize both your existing vent fan cover and hardware. This makes our budget pick as it has a smaller 9″ blade, and only has manual operating controls. It does have both forward and reverse to use the fan how you would like.

Everything We Recommend

Maxx Air 00-07500K MaxxFan Deluxe with Remote - Smoke, Black

Why you should trust us?

We have been campers for some time now and have done lots of research on moving air within our rig. This is especially important while boon docking in the summer without air conditioner. If you are ever in this position, you will thank us for getting an upgraded vent fan.

Who needs this product?

This product is best for campers both in the cold or warm season. This can help move colder outside air in your hot RV in the summer, act as a ceiling fan in the vent over your bed, as well as push down and help circulate hot air in the cooler months.

If you are a boondocker or have shore power, this is one of those must have upgrades that will make RV living much more comfortable.

How we picked?

The ability to move lots of air is one of our first factors of why we picked what we did. It can totally replace the air in your RV quickly. All of the models will move more air than your stock RV vent can so all will be at least an upgrade.

The rain shield keeps fresh air coming in. Only one model out of our top comes with a built in rain shield, but all have the availability to have an aftermarket rain shield installed. The rain shield allows you to use your vent fan in the rain. This is especially handy if you have pets that are left in your RV, or are stuck inside in a rain storm.

The remote control is truly a fantastic feature. You can quickly adjust the settings to make it cooler at the touch of a button. On our top pick, there is a thermostat that can adjust speed and airflow all by itself with no need for user input.

The automatic closing feature . With the push of a button you can open and close the vent on your RV, if you are like me, having the ability to do this while in your bed at night and adjust the temperature if you are too hot or to cold is a must have. This is also great if it starts to rain so you can be lazy and do it with one click.

How we tested it?

We picked the MaxxFan 7500 as our top pick for several reasons. Not only does the 7500 have much more settings, but it comes with 10 speeds in either forward or reverse. Couple this with their 12″ 10 blade fan, and you are moving some air.

One great fearture of this model is that it allows ypou to run with the lid closed and push air down just like a ceiling fan. This can get air moving either in the summer to provide blowing air when you are sleeping, but in the winter can also help circulate the warm air down to your living space.

The vent cover is held up with two lifting arms unlike the single that your stock vent has so stay goodbye to your vent flapping around in the wind.

This model comes with a built in rain cover that allows you to get fresh air without ruining your RV’s interior due to water damage. There is a thermostat to adjust the fan’s settings to provide you with constant quality temperatures.

The full unit is warrantied for 2 years and the vent lid has a lifetime warranty.

The made our runner up pick due to it requiring a separate rain cover, and due to a small price difference.

This model has 14 manual or adjustable variable speeds to get the exact airflow that is desired. There is a reverse switch to use the unit to either draw air in or suck it out, or as a ceiling fan as with our top pick model.

This unit differs instead of a full rain cover, it has a rain sensor that can close the lid if wet. This is a plus, however, if you have pets or want airflow when it is raining, you will have to invest in the optional rain cover.

The 7350 has a wireless remote control and thermostat option to automatically regulate temperatures inside the vehicle.

The Fan-Tastic fan comes with a 7 year limited warranty. The first 2 years are a limited warranty including parts, labor, and freight, and the last 5 years are parts only.

Overall, this is similar to our top pick with the exception of the rain cover which we like on our top pick.

Budget Pick:

Our budget pick, the Hengs 90046 is truly a plug and play fan. Our top pick and runner up will requrie you to go on the roof and use sealant to seal your new fan, this model can be installed from inside the RV very quickly.

This fan has a 9″ blade and has 5 speeds, 3 in forward and 2 in reverse. Total air movement is listed on their site at 188 cfm vs the 900 the MaxxFan puts out. This fan does put off a bit more noise than our top picks, but for the cost, it is very cost effective.

This model does not have a new lid that can be automatically adjusted or any rain prevention materials.

  • Rusting Issues have been Reported
  • The Durability Might not be Exceptional for Some

What Recent Buyers Report

Buyers are overall extremely satisfied by this offering from Maxxair Vent Corp. It’s a powerful, versatile, and easy to use RV roof fan. However, there have been a few customer reports about the screen of the fan rusting. This has made many buyers suggest this fan has longevity issues. Otherwise, the performance of this unit has been praised by numerous buyers.

Why it Stands Out to Us

The most prominent and impressive feature of this fan is its remote-control facility. This will make it easier to control this unit. Moreover, the remote control is also very unique and a feature that ensures extreme comfort. The ease of use and the 10-speed setting is what made us add this unit to our review list.

Who Will Use This Most

This cooling device is known for its ease of use and convenient installation. Therefore, we highly recommend it to be used by frequent travelers and people who don’t want any kind of installation difficulties. It is also good for traveling since its very lightweight. It can be used for keeping cool during the summer. This device also gets rid of the odor.

What Could Be Improved and Why

Perhaps the durability of this product can be worked upon. Rusting, and the device not working after some time of use are some reported concerns. Solving these issues can help make this unit better than it already is. Durability is important for RV owners, especially when they’re traveling and don’t want a device to stop working while on the road.

Bottom Line

Overall, this cooling unit from Maxxair Vent Corp is the best pick from our list. This fan has all the essentials as well as the extra features one can hope for. It has a remote control for added convenience. The 10-Speed setting allows you to set this device any way you prefer.

Maxxair Corp 00-04500K Maxxfan

Maxxair Corp 00-04500K Maxxfan

  • It Features 10-Speed Settings
  • This Device has a Thermostat
  • It Includes an Electric Lid Opening
  • It is a Low Maintenance Cooling Unit
  • It Comes with an Efficient Remote Control for Added Convenience and Comfort
  • It Might not Work Well for Long
  • Installation isn’t the Easiest for Some
  • Some People Might not Like the Noise

Many positive reviews about this roof fan from Maxx Air, with many buyers commenting on the ease of installation, and the quietness of the fan. The remote control makes life easier and is a useful addition. There is the odd negative review with one customer saying the buttons stopped working after a year, but reviews are very positive in general.

Why it Stands Out to Us

The most unique feature of this RV roof fan is its 10-speed setting. This gives the user more control over what fan speed they want according to their environmental conditions. A digital remote control enables you to set this unit the way you prefer quickly. Being user-friendly is another reason we decided to add it to our list.

This is a reliable cooling device for people who are frequent travelers. This is because this device has adjustable fan speeds, which means it can be adjusted to the weather situation you’ll face. So, whether it’s extremely hot or a bit humid at night , you can adjust the speed of the device for comfort.

What Could be Improved and Why

It seems from the customer reviews that it's a perfectly working fan, but the customer who complained about the buttons said customer service told him to change the pc board but and simply stopped answering his emails after the warranty ran out, so maybe improve the customer service.

Bottom Line

All in all, this is another reliable fan for RVs by Maxxair. Other than the noise this unit produced, this is a cooling device which can work well for your RV. This affordable unit gives you 10-speed settings. You can easily set the speed you like, using a remote control, to ensure you remain comfortable in your motor home.

Best RV Roof Fan for the Money: Fan-Tastic Vent RV Roof Vent with Thermostat and Rain Sensor

Best RV Roof Fan for the Money: Fan-Tastic Vent RV Roof Vent with Thermostat and Rain Sensor

  • It is Extremely Lightweight
  • It Comes with a Built-in Thermostat
  • A Rain Sensor to Automatically Shut off the Dome
  • It has a Remote Control for Increased Convenience and Comfort
  • The Variable Speed Options Give you Greater Control Over the Fan
  • There’s no Ceiling Fan Mode
  • The Rain Sensor isn’t Always Reliable
  • No Rain Covers; Need to Buy them Separately

The only negative thing reported by the recent users of this product is that the rain sensor is not very dependable. Also, since this device doesn’t come with any additional vent covers, it can be quite risky to simply rely on the sensor functioning of this unit when it rains.

Other than this, every user seems satisfied by the area this cooling fan covers and how powerful it is. Most of the customers of this cooling unit are extremely happy about the adjustable speed settings using a remote.

Why it Stands Out to Us

At a reasonable price, this fan does offer a lot of features for users to enjoy. You get variable fan speeds to control the power of this unit. While the rain sensor isn't the most dependable, those complaints are a minority. Another thing we like about this one is the quiet operation - there's nothing worse than a noisy fan while you're chilling out.

This fan is extremely useful for outdoor purposes. The rain sensor automatically protects this device from water damage. Moreover, it is also extremely lightweight, weighing only around 5 pounds. The remote is an added benefit, especially when you’re relaxing.

Since this fan is equipped with a rain sensor, many users will depend on this feature. It (the sensor) also seems to be one of the reasons people decide to buy this unit. However, since it's being reported, the sensor isn't highly reliable, the brand should work on improving functionality.

Bottom Line

Bringing the review of this Fan-Tastic vent to a close, overall, this is a diverse and high-performance RV roof fan that could be the perfect choice for many users. However, the issues with the rain sensor might stop people from buying it. If you’re okay with the sensor not being always dependable, this unit can make your RV-centric life easier.

Fan-Tastic Vent 1250

Fan-Tastic Vent 1250

  • It Offers 3-Speed Settings
  • It is Lightweight and Compact
  • This Cooling Device is Easy to Use
  • This Unit Doesn’t Produce a Lot of Noise
  • It can Withstand Certain Weather Conditions
  • There is no Rain Sensor
  • It does not Have a Built-in Thermostat
  • It Doesn’t have a Remote Control Like Other Higher End Models

Recent buyers seem to love this RV roof fan for its quiet performance. They say such a unit is highly appropriate for small spaces like RVs. The operating sound is low, which allows them to use it throughout the night. However, some wish this device came with a remote control for added convenience.

A nice feature of this fan is its variable, fixed, and adjustable settings. You can choose either manual or automatic speed settings, making it versatile and suitable for multiple situations. Secondly, we also like the high quality of its construction. It doesn’t produce a lot of noise. These benefits made us add it to our review list.

It's a good choice for people who want quality but don’t wish to overspend. It's easy to install, and it's a good all round roof fan. It's nice and quiet, so you can use it throughout the night without worrying about the little ones waking up.

The only thing missing in this cooling unit is the remote control. Therefore, the brand can look into adding a remote control with such a model. A remote control will obviously make it easier to use, and convenient. Even if the remote control can be used to turn this device on or off, people will appreciate it.

This other offering from Fan-Tastic is a reliable unit for you to invest in. It doesn’t produce a lot of noise which lets you operate it throughout the night. While there isn’t a remote control, it is still easy to select the settings for the fan to remain comfortable in any weather condition you see yourself.

Heng's 14" RV Camper Trailer Universal Roof Vent

Heng's 14" RV Camper Trailer Universal Roof Vent

  • It Features Durable Construction
  • It Doesn’t Produce a Lot of Noise
  • This Unit has an Appealing Design
  • The Fan is Compatible and Installable in all Standard RV Roofs
  • It has a Mesh Screen that Makes Maintenance Extremely Easy
  • The Lid isn’t UV Stabilized
  • A Garnish Ring isn’t Included
  • This Unit Doesn’t Offer a Lot of Moisture Resistance

Recent buyers are satisfied by this cooling unit. It is effortless to install and is compatible with numerous RVs. Other than that, people have praised overall convenience by the mesh screen. The overall constriction of the fan blades is durable. It doesn't produce a lot of noise.

The mesh screen is a unique feature found in this cooling unit. Such a screen makes the fan easier to maintain and also ensures overall tidiness in the RV. Due to it not producing a lot of noise, it is excellent for using at night. You won't have to worry about wasting a lot of time trying to figure out the installation process, either.

This RV vent fan is extremely useful to frequent travelers. This is because the fan is lightweight and compact. The elderly can use it because the installation process isn't much of a hassle. Families with small kids can use it too because the fan doesn't produce a lot of noise and can be used at night, too.

Talking about improvements, there are two factors which can be added to this RV roof fan. One of these is that there should be some kind of rain protection or a moisture-resistant feature. Furthermore, the lid should be UV stabilized. Due to it not being so, the lid can end up being disintegrated quite soon.

As for our final thoughts, this model from Heng’s does get the job done. If you're looking for an RV vent which can help with cooling air, ventilation, and getting rid of odor , this unit can be a good choice for you. It doesn't produce a lot of noise. The mesh allows you to easily maintain it. However, do remember it doesn't offer protection from the rain.

Best RV Ceiling Fan: Portable DC 12V Ceiling Fan with Switch

  • This is a Highly Portable Ceiling Fan
  • It can be Easily Connected to Solar Panels
  • It Comes with Extra Blades for Emergencies
  • It has a Simple (Yet Appealing) White Design
  • This Model comes with a Long Power Cord for Convenience
  • It Doesn’t Come with a Digital Remote

  • It has a Plastic Body which isn’t the Most Durable

What Recent Buyers Report

Recent buyers are highly satisfied with this ceiling fan for its no-noise performance. It's easy to install and a good budget option for keeping cool in the summer. Some buyers comment on how cheap it is to run, with some even connecting it to their solar kit to save even more.

One of the main reasons this cooling unit stands out to us is because of how portable it is. For those that are familiar with the market, it is rare to find such a travel-friendly ceiling fan. You can quickly hook it up and enjoy the no-noise operation. It is easy to operate, and you will be able to make an area comfortable in a few minutes.

This ceiling fan is meant for people not interested in ceiling vents. This is a model which can be detached and easily reattached in another motor home when needed. It is also a budget-friendly unit. However, keep in mind, this unit is meant for larger spaces. So, people with bigger RVs can benefit from it.

Of course, this fan can be improved a bit. The manufacturer should look into improving the durability of this fan. Even though it comes with spare blades, the construction is indeed lacking, but for the price you shouldn't expect too much. Maybe the size can be adjusted a bit for such a ceiling fan to be used in smaller spaces.

Those looking for a ceiling fan can benefit from this device. Other than the plastic body and lack of color variety, this ceiling fan does an excellent job of introducing good air flow inside an RV. The long cord gives rise to convenience. It is highly portable and comes with extra blades. You can even hook it up with a solar panel for energy-efficiency.

Buyer’s Guide

Now the reviews are done, let's take a closer look at RV roof fans. Here we look at the different types of roof fans you can get for an RV, and things to consider before buying one. We've also included an FAQ section so by the end of the article, you should have all your bases covered when it comes to RV roof fans.

Types of Fans Perfect For Your RV

When choosing an RV roof fan, it is important to find one that meets your specific requirements. Different choices have different assortments of options. Some of these are how easily the fan can be operated, speeds and noise, the lid, noise, color, and fit.

Ease of use is often overlooked as  some options have a control panel attached. This might cause difficulties for people if the ceilings are high and not easy to reach, but it's nothing a small platform doesn't fix.

If the ceilings are high, a remote control will be the best option. Luckily, many of the fans in this review come with a remote, making life much easier.

Different fans offer different speed options. A typical model offers 3-speed intensity options: low, medium, and high. Some offer up to 12 different speed options. Both typically include in/out airflow options so the user can direct the airflow.

How to Choose an RV Roof Fan

The noise output of your fan should not be overlooked. During the summer months, they will get a lot of use, so asking if the noisiness of certain fans is bearable should be evaluated. It's smart to look at the power it takes to operate each model as well.  Size is one of the most important  options. Most RV or camper roof vents are 14" x 14" and will fit the rooftop hole without any problems.

If you have to replace an existing fan, make sure to measure the hole to ensure the new one will fit. If it does not, you may have to end up cutting out a larger hole in the roof or end up with a fan that is too small for the space.

Aspects to Consider Before Buying

In order to purchase an RV roof fan, there are a lot of factors that should be considered before making a decision. Various accessories that come along with an RV fan need to be analyzed first. One of the most vital things, for an RV owner, to consider is an RV roof fan. It has numerous benefits while adding an aesthetic appeal to the interior and exterior. Before you buy one, do go over these points to make an informed buying decision.

Installation and Power

Almost all fans  run off 12 V DC power  and fit into a standard 14”x 14” opening in the roof. The device should be energy-efficient.

An RV fan having a rain sensor that closes the unit automatically when it rains is a good feature to have.

Writen by Tom Hank

fan travel trailer

Fact checked by Joseph Varney

Traveling via RV can offer loads of fun, but it also has some inconveniences. For instance, if you are traveling with your whole family, the inside could get a bit stuffy, especially during the humid summer months. You can turn on the air conditioning, but you will be wasting quite a lot of energy. If you had the best RV vent fan or two installed, it is a whole other ball game.

best rv vent fan

Having RV fans and vents will allow you to draw out the stale air from inside the vehicle and replace it with fresh air from the outside. Alternatively, many fan brands also will enable you to reverse the flow of air. It means you can draw fresh air from outside into the recreational vehicle. Either way, you will ventilate your campervan interior efficiently.

Best RV Vent Fan Reviews

1. fan-tastic vent 801250 vent.

fan travel trailer

One viable reason why you should get this RV ceiling vent is that it can efficiently move air in and out of your recreational vehicle.

The Fan-Tastic Vent 801250 1250 Series Vent has ten blades, which is then mated to a powerful and heavy-duty electric motor. It can keep your rig cool and dry even on the hottest summer day.

Another feature that I liked is that the fan blades are clear. It means that aside from keeping the air fresh inside the RV, it can also let a lot of natural light through. Even when the RV bathroom exhaust fan is not in use, the lid cover still has a light tint, so sunlight can always shine through.

This vent fan also has three fan speeds you can choose from. If it is not that humid and stuffy, you can just set the fan to work on a 1-speed or 2-speed setting. You can also reverse the fan’s direction if you ever want it to blow fresh air from the outside in.

The Fan-tastic vent cover lies on a rubber gasket when closed. You will also notice it being elevated a bit to prevent rainwater from leaking into the vehicle. This design also prevents drafts from getting inside the RV.

  • Comes with ten fan blades to move to a larger volume of air quickly
  • Has clear fan blades that let in sunlight
  • Features multiple fan speeds
  • Boasts of reversible airflow controls
  • Equipped with a self-sealing vent RV roof vent cover
  • The fan is quite loud at full blast.

2. Livpow RV Roof Vent

fan travel trailer

I find the Livpow RV roof vent fan a joy to install. It took me more time to remove my old fan than installing this new one. The whole process just involved connecting two wires to the RV circuit. After that, it is ready for use.

Speaking of installation, this fan fits perfectly into the 14-inch x 14-inch hole previously occupied by the old fan. There was no need to modify the opening in any way. The installation was as simple as dropping the fan in and sealing the sides.

I also liked that there are variable speeds to choose from at both fan directions. You can choose from three different fan speeds to either reduce or increase the airflow. I also discovered two settings to use when the fan is pulling air into the RV. What a convenient and versatile product.

I like the most about the Livpow roof vent fan because it is surprisingly quiet. It barely makes any noise, so you can use it as a fan for the RV bedroom. Even when I set it at the fastest fan speed, I can barely hear the motor spinning.

  • Easy and hassle-free installation with only minimal wiring required
  • Fits into any standard 14-inch x 14-inch vent openings
  • Boasts of its variable speed to either reduce or increase the airflow
  • Comes with reversible fan direction
  • Powerful yet silent motor (ideal for RV bedroom)
  • Only two air-in speeds provided

3. Maxxair 00-05100K Ventilation Fan

fan travel trailer

One neat feature I admire the most in the Maxxair fan that I could not see in other fan models is the built-in thermostat .

In detail, this thermostat turns on the fan when the RV temperature gets a bit too high for comfort. It is a nice inclusion since you do not technically have to turn the fan on all the time.

Best of all, this one has a ten-speed controller, so you can tweak the speed, depending on your needs. You can also reverse the direction of the fan blades’ rotation, so instead of drawing air out of the vehicle, it will be pulling air inside. You will also enjoy using the ten fan speeds for both directions.

Also, you do not have to worry about rainwater leaking inside the vehicle through the vent fan. The cowling is a couple of inches above the roofline, so runoff will not get into the fan. The cover also has a built-in rain shield, so you can keep the fan running even when there is a light rain shower.

Another notable feature of this vent fan is that it comes with an easy to remove bug screen. It prevents even the smallest bugs from getting inside the RV even when the fan is in use. It makes clean up and maintenance a lot easier.

Also, you can fit this standard RV fan to any 14-inch x 14-inch opening without difficulty.

  • Comes with a built-in thermostat
  • Has a built-in rain shield
  • Has a 10-speed fan, both intake and exhaust
  • Features an easy-to-remove insect screen for hassle-free cleaning
  • Fits in any standard 14-inch x 14-inch opening
  • Not so excellent customer service

4. Ventline RV Roof Vent

One of the things that I like about the Ventline RV Roof Vent fan is that it already comes with the basic mounting materials (butyl tape and mounting screws). The only thing that you will need to complete installation is a tube of self-leveling lap sealant.

Although the lid is plastic, you do not need to worry about it flying off while driving. In truth, its wedge-shaped and aerodynamically-designed structure allow it to stay closed while the RV is in motion.

Also, the installation is not that hard. The only difficult part is removing the old fan as well as the remaining sealant. You just need to drop this fan down the opening and attach two wires to power it up.

It is a good vent fan replacement if you do not have much in terms of a budget. Because this vent fan is very basic, do not expect other additional features aside from a crank lid/rain cover opener and an on/off switch.

  • Comes with basic mounting materials required
  • Has a wedge-shaped lid for aerodynamics
  • Comes with a durable galvanized iron mounting flange
  • Easy to install as it only requires minimal wiring
  • Fits a 14.25-inch x 14.25-inch opening

5. Maxxair Vent Corp 00-04000K Maxxfan

fan travel trailer

One impressive fact about the Maxxfan is that it comes with a remote control for ease of use. Notably, unlike other remote-controlled vent fans, it also comes with backup controls.

Another neat feature of this fan that I genuinely like is that it can run even with the lid closed. This feature is handy if the vehicle is rolling down the road and you want to circulate the air inside the RV.

Compared to most competing vent fan models, this one has two beefy lift arms for the lid. It means that you can operate the fan with the top open even when the RV is moving. The arms will keep the cover secure.

Another nice feature is that this fan comes with 10-speed settings to draw air in and out of the recreational vehicle. If you are the type of person who needs to have their fan speed at a particular setting, then you would love this one.

Also, do not worry if this fan can offer a secure fit as it goes well with all standard 14-inch x 14-inch RVs.

  • Comes with a remote control for the fan and controls on the actual unit.
  • Runs even with the camper vent cover closed to circulate air inside
  • Has two lift arms for a stronger support system
  • Fits any standard 14-inch x 14-inch RV
  • Comes with 10-speed settings for the fan
  • The bug screen rusts quite quickly

6. Hengs 90046-CR Vortex II Fan Kit

fan travel trailer

The Hengs Fan Kit is among the high-quality products you can rely on in the long haul.

The first thing that you will notice about this vent fan is that it can move quite a large volume of air – 188 cubic feet per minute, to be exact. It means that the interior of your RV will always remain fresh and cool all the time.

Like many of the vent fans in this list, the Heng’s Vortex II is also easy to install. Just drop it into the RV roof openings and connect the two wires to the circuit. After sealing up the outer edges, you are already good to go.

Even though the fan is large and can quickly move a huge volume of air, it is still surprisingly quiet. You can leave it on all night, and you will not even notice it working. The slight humming noise might even help you sleep better.

Another positive thing about this fan that is worth highlighting is that it is extremely easy to clean its blades. All you have to do is remove the cowling inside the vehicle. You can then give the fan blades a quick wipe to prevent dust from collecting on them.

  • Strong 188 cfm fan for fresh and cool air all the time
  • Easy to install and requires only minimal wiring
  • Quiet fan despite being so strong
  • Easy to clean the blades to avoid dust building up
  • Has a not ergonomically designed lid crank

7. Fan-Tastic Vent RV Roof Vent

fan travel trailer

Our next model – the Fan-tastic RV Vent Fan comes with a thermostat. It means that you can just set the temperature, and the fan will do its best to hit it. The fan will adjust its speed so the temperature inside the vehicle will always be comfortable.

This vent fan also has clear fan blades and a tinted lid, so regardless of the fan operating or not, you will have a bit of natural light inside your RV whenever it is available. It is a big help in conserving energy. You will even notice its contribution in making you save you a lot of money in the long run.

When it starts to rain, you do not have to scramble to get to your vent fan and manually close the lid. The Fan-tastic vent fan has a rain sensor that will automatically turn off the fan and close the lid, thus keeping the interior of your RV always dry. Such a feature also ensures its smooth functions for a long time.

What amazes me is the variable speed incorporated in this vent fan. It has a reverse switch to change the airflow direction, smoothly drawing the hot air out and cool air into the RV.

As expected, the fan can be adjusted using a remote control. I find it easier to set the thermostat and the fan’s speed when done via remote control. You can just sit back and adjust the vent fan to your desired comfort level.

  • Comes with a thermostat and automatic speed settings
  • Has clear fan blades that let in natural light
  • Features an automatic rain sensor
  • Comes with variable fan speeds for both directions
  • Features a remote control for easy adjustment
  • A high-priced vent fan

8. Camco 40480 Roof Vent Kit

fan travel trailer

I used to worry if the appliances attached to my RV roof will cause rainwater to leak through. Fortunately, when I installed the Camco RV vent cover featuring a one-piece frame, leaking issues no longer caused me a headache.

Most users appreciate how the blades of this vent fan are transparent. Such a design allows natural light to come in when the exhaust fan is in operation. Even the fan’s lid is translucent, so even if it is not turned on, there will still be a bit of natural light getting in the RV.

The mesh screen is a nice touch, as well. Unlike my old RV roof vent fan, this new model’s bug screen can be cleaned easily, making maintenance tasks a breeze. Notably, the screen can stop the insects from entering the fan and affecting its performance from time to time.

This product is also pretty easy to install. I am no electrician, but I could wire the fan in just a couple of minutes with only two wirings available. It took me literally just a couple of minutes as there are only two wires to work with.

  • Comes with leak-resistant one-piece frame
  • Boasts of a translucent white vent lid
  • Comes with a built-in mesh screen to prevent insects from entering
  • Breezy cleaning and maintenance
  • Promotes breezy and hassle-free installation
  • An affordable vent fan for RV
  • The plastic lid is not so durable

9. Hike Crew 14” RV Roof Vent Fan

fan travel trailer

RV owners do not need a degree in electrical engineering to install the Hike Crew Motorhome Fan. It only has two color-coded wires to connect to the RV circuit. So prepare a drill, a screwdriver, and a sealant, and you can make this fan work flawlessly and stay put.

What is distinct about this product must be its versatility. The fan excels at removing excessive moisture in the RV, allowing us to experience comfort even in humid weather. You will also never need to suffer through another stuffy summer day when you have this vent fan running.

The ventilation function is on another level with its three speed fan. It allows users to reverse the airflow if you want to take more fresh air from the outside. Due to this reverse mode, all weird odors stuck in your RV can be pushed out, leaving a great-smelling interior all the time.

One of the things that I look for in a vent fan is the ease of cleaning. I do not want to climb up on top of the roof every time I want to clean the fan blades. Thankfully, the Hike Crew vent fan allows easy access to the blades by removing the cover inside the cabin. After that, a piece of cloth and some soap will do the job.

  • Comes with two color-code wires for easy installation
  • Removes moisture and excess heat in the RV
  • Excellent ventilation function with a reverse mode
  • Allows fresh air to come in and pushes out weird odors
  • Low-maintenance with easy-to-clean fan blades, only requires soap and cloth
  • Operates quietly without disturbing daily routines in the RV
  • The inbound fan speed is not that fast

10. HENG’S 14″ RV Roof Vent

fan travel trailer

The next valuable piece that you should consider having is the HENG’S 14″ RV Camper Trailer ROOF Vent Fan.

An amazing feature of this vent fan is the mesh screen. This screen is tough enough to withstand the changing weather conditions of RV life. Also, it can block the bug’s entrance while letting the fresh air go inside your RV. The screen is also easily removable, making it easier to clean when needed.

I kind of like the old school handle that comes with this vent fan. Unlike the knobs that come with the more sophisticated models, the crank is easier to turn. The discreet push-button is also a nice touch.

The lid also sits on top of a thick rubber gasket. It is very deep, thereby guaranteeing that there will be no rainwater that will leak inside the RV. The only reason that rainwater can get inside is if the sealant outside were to fail. More importantly, as the device runs on 12-volt power, it is ideal for RV use.

  • Comes with a removable mesh bug screen
  • Has a convenient crank handle for opening the lid
  • The lid sits on a thick rubber gasket , blocking rainwater
  • Has a discreet push-button power switch
  • Ideal for Rv use: runs on 12 volts
  • Requires caulk and screws for easy mounting
  • Be careful due to the sharp vent flanges

11. Maxxair 0004500K Fan

fan travel trailer

This Maxxair vent fan comes with a thermostat, so you can just set the fan to a specific temperature and leave it at that. It is a great alternative to having your air conditioning turned on all the time. It saves money and keeps the RV comfortable.

A nice convenient touch that comes with this vent fan is a neat remote control. The remote included has an LCD screen that shows you its current settings. Best of all, there are also manual controls on the fan itself if you misplace the remote.

Speaking of controls, you can fine-tune the operation of the fan using the 10-speed controller. You can set the fan speed to maintain a specific temperature and humidity inside the vehicle to your exact comfort levels.

You may think that with all of the sophisticated electronics that come with this vent fan, you will need a professional electrician to help with installation. But that is not the case, and you only need to do minimal wiring. You just have to connect two wires to the RV electric circuit and make sure your RV ceiling vent opening is standard 14×14 inches.

  • Has a nice remote with an LCD screen
  • Features controls in the ceiling
  • 10-speed fan controller for specific comfort level
  • Installation is minimal with a standard vent opening
  • Customer service needs improvement

12. Vortex Ii Vent Fan Upgrade

fan travel trailer

Good news! You do not need to pry out the entire vent fan assembly if the RV roof fans no longer work or if you want something a bit more efficient. You just need to get the Vortex Ii RV vent fan upgrade. With that, you will only be replacing the fan mechanism, and it will be like you have a new vent fan.

Because of the fan blades’ design, this product is more efficient at moving air in and out of the RV than your previous fan. Even at low fan speeds, you will notice a huge difference in air quality.

Installation was also quite easy, even for first-time users. They will only need a basic screwdriver to remove the old one and install this new RV roof vent fan. In truth, we only have to connect two color-coded wires for added convenience.

Aside from being efficient at circulating air inside the RV, this replacement/fan upgrade also has a small current draw. It means you will be getting a better fan and save on electric costs in the long run.

Also, you should know that this device is made in a universal fit. It can be an incredible replacement for Heng’s, Ventline, Elixir vent fan.

  • Can efficiently move air in and out of the RV
  • Features a variable speed controller for both fan directions
  • Simple installation with color-coded wires and a screwdriver
  • Fits perfectly on vent fan housings from other brands: Ventline, Heng’s and more

13. MaxxAir 00-933069 Vent Cover

fan travel trailer

Have you ever wished that you can open the RV roof vent even when it is raining outside? It is now possible if you install the Maxx Air vent cover over your exhaust/intake fan. You can enjoy fresh and cool air inside your RV all year round.

The RV vent cover replacement is made using high-quality polyethylene plastic. You will also love the fact that it has UV-treatment, preventing it from deteriorating even when exposed to extreme sunlight. You can be sure that this cover can last for many years.

As long as your RV uses the standard vent opening, which is 14-inch x 14-inch, you should have no fitment problems whatsoever. Even if your existing fan is not from Maxx Air, this cover should still be compatible with it.

I also like how this vent cover comes with a mesh screen to prevent debris and bugs from getting inside the RV. Even when you leave the vent fan open but not operating, the bugs will not be able to invade your RV.

  • Provides excellent protection against the rain
  • Made of high-density polyethylene and UV-resistant
  • Allows air to circulate regardless of the weather condition
  • Can fit on all standard 14×14 inch openings
  • Comes with a mesh filter to prevent bugs and debris from getting in

Maxxair offers another RV vent fan that proves to be efficient when moving air around in the RV cabin. If you want to save on air conditioning costs, you will love this product.

Even on the hottest summer days, you will feel dry and cool inside your camper RV when this fan is operating. This RV vent fan is indeed a powerful device offering up to 900 CFM for all-day comfort.

I like the 10-speed fan controller for both intake and exhaust directions. If you like your RV interior to be a bit humid, you can set the fan on 5 or 6. If you want the interior to be cool, you can set the fan speed to nearly the maximum.

The great thing about Maxx Air vent fans is that certain fan models come with a remote controller. You can effortlessly operate your vent fan and open its lid from a distance.

I also like the Maxxair Maxxfan deluxe lid design because it allows you to operate the fan even when it is raining outside. The vent holes point down, so rainwater will not be able to get inside the fan.

  • Over 900 CFM of air displacement
  • Has a built-in thermostat for climate control
  • Has a 10-speed fan controller
  • Fits all standard 14-inch x 14-inch RV roof openings
  • Comes with a remote controller
  • Not very detailed manuals

Best RV Vent Fans Buying Guide

rv-vent-fan-motor

Is it your first time to shop for an RV roof vent? Then it is understandable if you don’t even know what you need to look for. You don’t have to worry since this buyer’s guide will teach you all the things you have to keep an eye out for. Among the most important ones are:

The size of your RV roof vent – You need to ensure that the RV roof vent fan you will be getting can fit inside the hole it is supposed to go into. Most RV vent fans often come in the 14-inch x 14-inch standard size.

However, there is always the chance that your RV uses unorthodox sizes, like 13-inch x 14-inch or 14.5-inch x 14.5-inch, so use your tape measure and double-check the size of the opening. Aside from the square dimensions, check the thickness of the roof material you will be working with, too.

Speed control – Several vent fans come with only one speed, and that is its default setting. However, you can also find those fans that come with variable speed controls, meaning you can set their speeds. It is especially useful when the direction is reversible, and you have it set to blowing air inside the vehicle.

Some models also come with 10-speed settings, while most just have a three speed fan. However, the settings on the 10-speed fans have minor changes from one to the next. With that, some discovered that it is better to settle for a fan that has just three settings with a noticeable difference in fan strength in between each setting.

CFM rating – CFM stands for cubic feet per minute, and it refers to the volume of air that the RV roof vent fan can move or remove from a room. If a vent fan has a higher CFM rating, it can move a larger volume of stale air and humidity faster. With that said, fans with a larger CFM rating tend to be more expensive and consume more power.

Amount of current required – Before you pull the trigger on an RV vent fan, you need to check if the fan’s current draw is compatible with the electric circuit of your vehicle. In other words, your RV should be able to provide the vent fan with enough current for the motor to work. On average, a vent fan set on high will have a current draw of around 3 amperes.

Ease of installation – If you are buying a brand-new replacement for your RV vent fan, then the installation process should be quite straightforward. The whole process should be so simple that it involves removing the existing vent fan by scraping the existing sealant and then popping off the screws holding the old vent fan in place.

Most of the vents being sold right now come in the standard size, 14-inch x 14-inch. However, on the odd chance that you bought something smaller, you should not force yourself to swap it in. You will only have a hard time doing so, and it will not be worth it at all.

Lid opening method – There are two basic lid opening methods that you can choose from – automatic and manual. It will be a matter of preference which method you choose. For instance, automatic opening vent fan lids are more convenient as you can open and close them just by pressing a button.

Some vent fans also tend to close automatically when it’s raining. The downside to automatic closing lids is that they will require a bit more wiring during the installation. Aside from that, these fan models are higher-priced.

On the other hand, fans that have manual lids are not that hard to open. They usually come with a crank knob that is not that difficult to turn. One advantage of a manual hand crank is that you can open the lid to the degree that you want. It is not like the automatic opening lids, where they open all the way only. With that, one can argue that automatic opening lids are more of a luxury rather than a necessity.

Motor durability – If you are serious about saving on air conditioning costs, you will most likely have the camper van vent fan most of the time while you are camping. It means that you will be putting a lot of strain on the fan motor, so you should choose a vent fan with a heavy-duty motor that can last a long time.

The only way to find out which vent fans can last a long time is by consulting the RV vent fan customer reviews online. The verified customers have nothing to gain for lying on the brand’s behalf, so most of them can be brutally honest with their reviews. If many reviewers say that a certain product has a good fan motor, you can most likely trust them.

Reverse fan direction – The main function of a roof vent fan is to draw hot and humid air out of the vehicle. That means the RV roof vent fan blows air out of the recreational vehicle. However, there are times when you will want to draw fresh air from the outside into the RV, like when you park in a particularly cool area.

It is also a good way to ventilate the entire RV while parked. Open all the windows and turn on the vent fan to draw air from outside indoors. It is highly advisable to get a vent fan with a reversible direction. You will surely find the use of this function while traveling in your RV, so it will always be handy to have it.

Price – The price will be purely subjective, so the best thing you can do regarding this factor is to get the best vent fan within your budget range. With that said, you should not set your budget so low that the only vent fans that you can get are the absolute cheapest ones. Keep in mind that the cheapest ones do not work quite as well as you would think they would. Moreover, these units often do not last that long.

How Many Types of Vent Fans for RV Are There?

There are a couple of different types of RV vent fans that you can choose from depending on what your needs are. Among the most common ones are:

Standard vent – This type is just a simple vent. You just have to install it so that there will be an opening where stale air and smells can escape, and fresh air from the outside can come inside the recreational vehicle. It is just a fancy hole in your roof that you can open and close.

Vent fan with crank lid opening – These units are the vents with actual fans. It is much better than the previous type as it comes with a fan that vents out inside air outside to maintain the inside temperature inside cool and the air fresh.

Many brands also allow you to reverse the fan direction to blow fresh air from outside inside the recreational vehicle. You can open the vent cover from the inside of the vehicle using a manual hand crank, but some feature a lever that you can use to prop the cover open.

Electronic lid opening – This unit is very similar to the previous vent fan type. It comes with an electronic fan that blows air out and/or into the vehicle. The difference between the two is that this one has an automatic electronic cover. You just need to push a button or flip a switch to open or close the lid.

Several electric lid vent fans come with an automatic rain sensor. It means that when the vent fan gets a bit wet from the rain, it will automatically close the lid and turn off the fan.

How Does an RV Vent Fan Work?

A vent fan is installed on the roof of the RV. When you turn on the vent fan, it will draw out the air and moisture from inside the vehicle outside. It keeps the air inside the RV fresh and prevents it from getting stale and heavy. It is also great for drawing out the kitchen smells and humidity along with the range hood.

Many brands allow you to reverse the spin of the RV roof vent fan to draw air from the outside into the vehicle. It is a great idea if you park somewhere with outdoor air that is quite fresh and cool. It will allow you to keep the interior of your RV cool and the air inside fresh. With that, you can save energy because you no longer need to turn on the air conditioner quite as often.

Who Makes the Best Vent Fan for RV?

You can find many reliable manufacturers of vent fans that you can choose from. I have tested quite a lot of them, and among the brands that stood out are Fan-Tastic, Livpow, Maxxair, Ventline, Heng’s, Camco, Hike Crew, and Vortex. I can guarantee that these brands are some of the best that you will ever find.

Maxx Fan vs. Fan-Tastic Fan: Which One Is Better?

Although both these fans are great choices, the winner between the two is the Maxx RV roof vent fan. The primary reason is that it comes with a remote control, which allows you to control the fan’s speed and direction and the opening and closing of the lid.

Are All RV Roof Vents the Same Size?

When you shop for RV vent fans, you will most likely find that they only come in one size, 14-inch x 14-inch. Although some come in 13-inch x 14-inch, they are still hard to find, and they usually do not fit in most RVs. If you will be replacing a vent fan in your RV, it will likely leave an opening that will fit a 14-inch x 14-inch vent fan.

How Do You Replace an RV Ventilation Fan?

If you need to replace the old RV vent fan, you do not need to hire an electrician; you can do it yourself quite easily. You just need a replacement fan and a couple of handy tools. You should then follow these steps:

Step 1 – Get the right-sized replacement fan

You will need to measure the dimensions of your existing fan carefully. Although most RV vent fans are 14-inch x 14-inch, you should measure it again just to be on the safe side. There is no telling if your existing fan has one of those obscure measurements, so save yourself all of the hassles of returning your purchase and waiting for the replacement.

Step 2 – Take out the vent

You will need to remove the knobs and screws that hold the fan’s plastic shroud inside the recreational vehicle. After removing all the screws, the cover should just drop down.

Once the cover of the fan is off, disconnect the wires that provide power to the fan. You just join them using clips to not even strip and join the wires later. Set the power supply wire aside so that it will not get in the way of the new fan, but make sure that you can still reach it later.

Step 3 – Remove the sealant

For this step, you will need to get up on the roof and locate the fan. Remove the screws anchoring the vent fan in place, but a thick layer of sealant will cover them. You will need to remove as much of the sealant as you can. Do not stop when you expose the screws. Get most of the sealant off, and the edges of the vent fan should be visible.

If you are having trouble removing the sealant, you can use a heat gun to warm up the sealant and get it soft enough that you can easily scrape it off the vent fan.

Step 4 – Pry up the vent

Move your scraping tool around the edge of the vent until it starts to lift off the surface. There might be a bit of butyl tape holding the fan onto the roof, so you will probably need to move it little by little until you can pull it out of the hole in the roof.

Step 5 – Take out all the excess sealant

You will need to take this step slow and muster as much of your patience as you can. Use a heat gun or a blow dryer set on medium or high to heat the sealant to be easier to remove.

You need to be extra careful here to easily damage the roof if you make even one small mistake. When there is just a bit of sealant left, you can clean up the remainder using a few mineral spirits. Just apply a liberal amount of the spirit onto the remaining sealant bits using a rag. Wait a few minutes to let it do its work, and gently use a scraper and a rag to remove them.

You will want a clean and neat surface before installing the new fan, so use a bit of rubbing alcohol to get all the dust off the surface. It will give the butyl mounting tape a better surface to cling onto.

Step 6 – Mount the new fan

Do a test fitting of the new fan. It will give you an idea of which direction the fan will go into. Aside from that, it can tell you if you have to modify the opening a bit more. Once you are satisfied with the fit, you can place butyl tape around the hole edges and make sure that there are no gaps where water can seep through.

Carefully place the fan over the opening and apply a bit of pressure to make sure that it sticks onto the butyl tape. After that, screw in the self-tapping screws into the holes in the frame and through the butyl tape and the roof material.

Do not overtighten the screws. Go around the frame, gradually tightening each screw to compress the putty a little bit each time. Stop when the screws are considerably hand-tight already.

Step 7 – Apply sealant around the fan edges

Grab a tube of lap sealant and apply a generous amount around the edges of the vent fan. Start by placing a dollop of the sealant over each screw head and then go over the edge of the vent fan.

If you use a self-leveling sealant, wait for it to spread out and settle, which usually takes 24 hours. If you are not using a self-leveling sealant, then you will have to spread it out by hand.

It is best to use self-leveling lap sealant when the weather is above 60 degrees F. It can help ensure that it will settle and cure quicker. Cold lap sealant is very difficult to work with, and it will take more than a day to settle.

If you cannot avoid applying the sealant in cold weather, you can use a heat gun set on medium to heat the tube gradually so that the material can flow easily. You can also use the heat gun on the applied sealant so it can spread out faster.

Step 8 – Connect the fan to the power

Go inside your recreational vehicle, and then connect the new fan to the power supply wire. Make sure that the clips are on securely. You should hear an audible clicking sound when you join the two ends together. Check if you connected the fan properly. If you did everything correctly, the fan should turn on.

Step 9 – Install the new fan shroud

This one serves as the last step. Place the new fan shroud over the fan and make sure that you do not overtighten the screws. Doing so might crack the shroud.

Care and Maintenance

There are a couple of things that you can do to make your RV vent fan last for as long as they possibly can. The most important and probably the most frequent maintenance task you will be doing on the fan is cleaning the screen. The screen prevents bugs and bits of debris from getting into the vehicle.

The nice thing here is that its design allows the easy removal of the screen. Once you remove the screen, you should clean it in a basin of soapy water and with the help of a soft brush to remove any dirt stuck on it. Allow it to dry completely before you reattach it to the fan.

The fan blades will also need cleaning from time to time. However, unlike the screen, it is much more difficult to remove the blades. You must climb up to the roof, disconnect the fan from the power, remove the RV vent fan motor. After that, you have to take out the fan attached to it.

However, if you do not need to deep clean the blades, it is much easier to place your hand inside a sock and dip it in some clean water. Reach into the fan and wipe as much dirt from the fan blades as you can.

If you have not used a vent fan in your RV, I highly suggest that you get one. You will immediately notice the difference in air quality, and you will also notice how much money you will be saving from air conditioning costs.

However, it is important to get the best RV vent fan that you can find to gain most of the benefits of using one. The buying guide presented above offers all the things you need to know to not be wasting time and money on the wrong product. You can now shop with confidence, knowing that you already know what to look for.

Fantastic Vents

Almost a century of combined experience in the recreational and commercial vehicle industry, along with aviation and automotive technology, led to the development of a 12-volt, high performance air exchange system for recreational and commercial vehicles.

The core of the system is a powerful 12", 10-blade rotary fan that works with a slightly open window to create a balanced airflow. It is designed for maximum air exchange, minimum sound levels and power consumption. Fresh, clean, natural air is pulled in. Hot, stale, stuffy air is pushed out.

Fan-Tastic Vent will exchange the air in your vehicle in minutes. Cooking smoke and unpleasant aromas are whisked away in seconds.

Fan-Tastic Vent can reduce the use of air conditioning allowing you to breath natural, fresh ambient outside air.

Fan-Tastic Vent is light weight, compact, bug resistant, durable and seals tight when not in use. The sealed motor operates at variable or 3-speeds depending on the model for selected performance levels. Installs in minutes and fits the standard existing opening provided by most recreational vehicle manufacturers.

Whether your rig costs $5,000 or a million dollars, the quality of the air you breathe should remain your paramount objective.

Plug in Endless Breeze and the large volume of air movement will surprise and delight you!

How to Install a Fantastic Vent

Installing a fantastic RV vent on the roof of your RV is a pretty simple job when replacing an existing vent with 12 volt wiring nearby. First, you will need to remove the inside vent garnish. This is normally fastened to the ceiling with 4 screws.  Remove the screws and remove the garnish. Next, you will need to disconnect any wiring to the existing vent if it has a fan in it already.  Now you will have to get up on the roof and scrape the caulk away from the screws that are around the perimeter of the vent flange.  Once the screws are removed, carefully insert a putty knife in between the vent flange and the roof material and gently pry up on the vent.  While prying the vent, be careful not to pull to hard on the vent as you risk tearing the roof material. Once the vent is removed clean the existing caulk and putty or butyl tape material from around the perimeter of the 14 x 14 opening in the roof. Once the area is cleaned you are ready to install your Fantastic vent. You will need to apply new putty or butyl tape around the flange of the vent then insert the vent into the center of the opening in the roof.

Next, fasten it to the roof by installing screws into the existing holes in the Fantastic Vent .  Once the vent has been fastened to the roof, caulk all screw heads and around the perimeter of the vent with rubber roof caulk (for rubber roofs) or latex caulk for others. Now its time to finish the interior. If the previous vent was wired, simply use the existing 2 wires and connect them to the new Fantastic vent. If not, you will have to find a 12 volt DC source. In most cases, there is usually a ceiling light nearby that you can tap into making sure that the light is not operated by a wall switch. Remember to not reverse the polarity. If you have one red and one white wire, red will be positive (+) and white will be negative (-). If you have one black and one white wire, black will be positive (+) and white will be negative (-). If you have one red and one black wire, red will be positive (+) and black will be negative (-). You can connect these to the corresponding wires on your new vent.  Once that is connected it is time to install the garnish by raising to the ceiling and fastening it with the 4 screws previously removed from the old vent.   That's it your done and can sit back and enjoy the fantastic air circulation your new vent provides!

Best RV Roof Vent Guide For 2024

(Camp Addict does NOT accept payment from any company to review or endorse their products.)

Keeping air flowing through your camper can be an issue at times, especially if you don't have an RV vent fan.

This is especially true on stagnant, hot days.

When you aren't hooked up to shore power and can't run your air conditioning, there's one superior way to move air through your rig:

An RV roof vent fan.

RV roof fans help to keep moisture, smells, and heat out of your vehicle. They can also somewhat replace air conditioning. ( Keeping an RV cool in extreme heat .)

Keeping moisture out with a camper roof vent fan is especially helpful in colder climate. Condensation can become a problem in such a tiny area.

Keeping a window open while your RV fan is on will also help get air moving around in your small space.

If your camper roof vent doesn’t come equipped with an RV fan, or it came with a ‘stock’ OEM fan, do yourself a favor and replace it.

A no-name brand, cheap stock tiny RV bathroom fan is not powerful enough to pull out moisture.

Replacing it with a more powerful RV bathroom fan pays off in a big way.

Below is our guide on all things RV vent fans. At the end, we review the best fans out there. Use our table of contents immediately below to jump to where you would like to go.

Already know all about this subject? Just looking for the reviews? Click the button below to jump down to the product reviews.

Fan Power Considerations

RV roof vent fans don’t use up a lot of amps. They only run off of your RV batteries (12V) which stores amps.

At the maximum draw, the most powerful ones will pull somewhere from 3 to just under 4 amps at full speed.

At lower power settings they will run a little over 1 amp.

The most powerful vent fans will pull a LOT of air around your rig, depending on the size of your rig. Some rigs have two + vent fans.

With two fans, you may set up one fan up to pull air inside and the other to draw air to the outside.

This circulates the air amazingly well.

Other Important Considerations

There are a few important things to consider when looking for a roof vent fan upgrade:

Vent Fan Options Galore

Options may include:

  • A remote control for the trailer vent fan
  • Varying speeds
  • A rain cover so you may use it during inclement weather
  • Reversible blade rotation to either pull air in or push it out.

Size of Your RV Roof Vent

Most RV or camper roof vents come in one standard size (14x14.)

If you have an existing fan to replace, always be sure to measure the hole to make sure the new one will fit.

Otherwise, you had better be prepared to cut out a larger hole. (OR end up with too small of a fan to insert.)

Leaving Pets at Home Alone in Your RV

Do you have pets with you RVing ? If so, and you leave them at home, a camper roof vent fan is crucial for their well-being.

RV’s are a lot like cars in that under sunny conditions, it can and WILL heat up very quickly.

This could lead to your pet overheating. Even worse, it could kill them.

A solution could be to open the windows and have a vent fan pulling air out. However, if it rains, now you have a problem.

You say, "Well, get one with a rain sensor then." That is a very bad idea...

How is a Rain Sensor Solution for Pets a Bad Idea?

Great question! You could get a fan with a rain sensor.

However, once it rains and the camper vent closes, your animals could be in trouble once the sun comes back out.

The rain sensor is designed to close the fan vent when it senses rain.

OK, that great! Actually, it's not. It won't automatically reopen after the rain.

You'll have to manually reopen the vent once it's been closed because of the rain sensor.

In such a case, your pet could die of overheating if you aren't home when the vent fan closes itself. We have a product recommendation for this scenario.

Height of Your RV Ceiling

Can you easily reach your ceiling to manually open the trailer vent fan? Constantly having to get out a step stool to open/close your RV or trailer vent fan would quickly become a pain.

If you (or your partner) cannot easily reach the trailer fan in the ceiling, consider getting a fan with a remote.

Noise Factor

How much time will you be spending in your RV? Will you be living in it full-time or twice a year?

Some vent fans are louder than others. One of the primary reasons people replace the factory (OEM) fan is because it is very loud.

It also may not move much air.

Many of these OEM fans come with teeny fan blades and loud motors.

If you spend a lot of time in the RV, whether full-time or part, you need to consider how annoyed you will be with a loud roof vent fan. Climate also plays a part here.

If you will be using a vent fan as your only cooling in a very warm climate most of the time, you will have to use your vent fan during most of the day.

(Don't forget to consider how many amps this will drain your battery if you are not connected to shore power.)

Can you handle the constant loud hum of a cheap fan? Remember, camping is usually an attempt to get AWAY from noise and to experience peace and quiet.

All of the above are important factors to consider before purchasing an RV roof vent fan.

Thoughts on RV Roof Vent Fans

Camp Addict Co-Founder

My travel trailer came from the factory with two roof vents.

I've lived in it full-time since April 2014 and have extensively used both vent fans.  One is directly over the bed in front and has a Fantastic Fan with a manually raised dome and a temperature sensor.

In the bathroom, there is a cheap little Ventline fan with a 6-inch blade and a puny electric motor.

It really doesn't push much air and sounds like a hive of bees.  The Fantastic Fan is great.

It has three speeds and can move some serious air.   Sure, you hear it when it's running, but that's because it's moving some serious air.

And it is much quieter than if I had the air conditioning running.

The puny vent in the bathroom moves enough air to get moisture out after you take a shower, but it takes its sweet time.

If I had a real vent fan in there, I'd be a much happier camper.

I'm eyeballing the Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe to install in the bathroom.

That is one nice unit and is what I wish I had in both my roof vent openings.  The integrated rain cover is a top-selling point for me.  Let me tell you why.

Both of my current vents have the typical dome cover that opens up and offers zero protection from the rain.

I wanted the ability to keep them open in all types of weather, so I installed a vent cover over both.

Big, tall, ugly vent cover

The covers do what they are designed to do.   They allow me to have my vent lids open in any weather.  Water won't get in while it's raining, and that's perfect.

But there are a couple of catches.

The forward vent cover is right by my solar panel. The cover looms above the panel and actually shades it at certain sun angles.

If you know anything about solar panels, then you know that ANY shade kills the output.

If I had the Maxxair vent fan, in the closed position there would be no shading of the solar panel and in the open position I'd be no worse off than I am now.

Solar panel shaded by vent cover.

Another issue is that the vent covers are tall and they are always in the deployed position.   They can't be retracted when there is a stiff wind out.

Why does this matter?

Because they tend to rattle around when the wind catches them just right.   I don't know about you, but I don't sleep well when there are strange noises at night.

Never mind when the wind is rocking my rig.  The Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe will have its rain cover retracted when in the closed position.

This gives the wind a much smaller surface area to catch.

Oh, one last point about the Maxxair - they just look cool. I'm not a vain person, but who doesn't like a little style? Even when you are boondocking in the middle of nowhere.

RV Roof Vent Covers

If you choose to go with a Fan-Tastic Vent roof fan then it is highly advisable to purchase a separate vent cover.

Seriously, if you don't go with our #1 roof fan pick you need one of these.

You are going to want to keep your RV roof vent open in the rain. With the Fan-Tastic vents, there is zero protection from water pouring from the sky without a supplementary vent cover.

Sure, you could purchase the model with the rain sensor and hope that it works.

But there are enough horror stories of them not working to give you pause. Also, there will be plenty of times when your rig needs ventilation when it's raining.

With a Fan-Tastic fan, you will need one of these covers or your rig will get wet inside.

The downside of these vent covers? They add another additional cost to the purchase of your roof vent fan.

Also, are big, bulky and unsightly. They can cast shadows on any solar panels in their vicinity.

Etc, etc, etc.

Seriously consider getting our #1 rated roof fan, the Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe which comes with an integrated rain cover.

No pricey, unsightly vent cover required.

An RV vent fan is a best bet for keeping your rig comfortable in different types of weather.

If you have pets, there's almost no question which fan you should be getting if you are in the market. (See below- the Maxxair)

Most fan openings come in a standard size, so changing out your lame original fan with a new one should be no problem.

A new, better fan is one of the easiest ways to upgrade your RV.

If you are in the market, below, we have reviewed the best brands of fan. We let you know which one's are the best and why- we give reasonings behind our choices.

We have reviews for the quietest, best on a budget, and best for pets. Keep reading to let us walk you through which fans are the best and why.

Best RV Roof Fans Reviewed

There are two ‘gold standards’ for RV vent fans:

  • Fan-tastic Fans
  • Maxxair Fans.

Both companies have their following and both are very good brands.

We outline the pros and cons of both brands below in our camper roof vent fan reviews.

Best RV Vent Fan Overall

Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe

  • Built-in cover
  • Lowers when not in use
  • Run with cover closed for 'ceiling fan' mode
  • Twin lifting arms for stability
  • Available remote with LCD screen
  • Slightly noisier than the Fan-Tastic Vent fan

Holy moly, the Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe RV vent fan is the mack-daddy of having the most features with a stress-free operation.

You may as well stop reading right here, and order up a Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe, saving yourself the time of reading on, ha ha. (We kid)

TWO CHOICES to make: Manual or electric lid. And white lid or smoke colored lid. (See below)

Continue Reading Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe Review

The Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe is an RV vent fan that packs quite a feature-filled punch.

It's the only roof fan on the market that combines a rain vent cover directly into the fan assembly.

This eliminates the need to purchase a separate bulky, tall cover. And that is just scratching the surface of what the MAXXFAN has to offer...

Maxxair MAXXFAN Overview

Ceiling Fan Option

This Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe can run the fan with the vent cover CLOSED.

The Fan-Tastic Vent fans of this class don't have this feature. Why would you want to do this?

What about a cold night when you need to move the air around but don't want to pull in cold air or suck out your warm air?

It acts as a ceiling fan.  No other manufacturer offers this option in this class of fan.

Well done, Maxxair!

Built-In Rain Cover

The other clever feature of this RV vent fan model is that it's pretty much rain-resistant, open or closed with their patented built-in rain cover.

Yes, the cover can remain open during the rain and your rig will not get wet.

With the Fan-Tastic Vent fans, if you want to be able to have it open in the rain, you must purchase a separate rain cover for it.

MAXXFAN RV Vent With Smoke Cover

MAXXFAN RV Vent With White Cover

Twin Lifting Arms

What's the big deal about twin lifting arms for the RV vent cover?

With just one arm on the Fan-Tastic Fan, when driving with the vent open (or in high winds), many complain about the fluttering noise of the vent in the wind.

Some have even broken off. More is better when it comes to vent cover arms.

Removable Bug Screen

The vent screen can be easily removed from the inside for cleaning or replacement.

This is HUGE if you have ever had or do have a fan that does not allow you to remove the screen.

Leaves, debris, and bugs can get trapped up there otherwise.

Maxxair RV Fan Controls

Maxxair RV Vent Fan Remote

This RV vent fan model comes with the option of using either the remote or the manual controls on the unit (remote model includes fan mounted manual controls as well).

You can choose to have the fan rotate to either pull air in or to push it out of your RV.

The Maxxair's infrared (IR) remote is pretty slick. It has an LCD screen that shows you exactly what is going on with the fan.

The Fan-Tastic Fan's remote has no such screen so you don't know what speed is set or if it is in exhaust or intake mode.

Infrared RV Fan Remote Usage Hints

The remote that comes with the Maxxair RV fan models 7000K and 7500K uses an infrared (IR) signal to control the unit.

This means that the remote has to be pointed at the IR receiver on the roof vent fan (it works via line of sight).

You can use one remote to control multiple remote equipped Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe models (the 7000k and 7500k).

The remote will not work with the manual control models as they do not have an infrared receiver .

This means that though the remote control models all come with remotes, you don't have to remember which remote controls what fan.

They are interchangeable. Nifty!

RV Vent Cover Options

Maxxair RV vent covers come in two colors - white or smoke.

  • You can download the Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe RV vent fan installation and operation manual here (PDF).

Installation

All the parts you will need come with the unit. Mounting hardware, screws, etc.

All you will need to get is roof sealant.

Maxxair MAXXFAN Installation

This RV roof vent fan is much lower than the standard type, so it has a very low profile.

Doesn't stick up as much as other typical RV roof vent fans. There's less worry that the cover will shade any solar panels.

Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe RV Fan Features and Specs:

Best RV Vent Fan for Pets

  • Integrated rain cover
  • Able to provide ventilation in any weather
  • Includes all the great features outlined in full review above
  • None - it's the best RV vent fan if you have pets. Period.

Again, the Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe comes in at #1.

The Maxxair is especially good for pets due to its built-in rain cover and lack of a thermostat control that will shut the vent cover. Read on to understand why.

Again, two choices to make : Smoke or white lid, and manual or electric.

Why can't i just leave my rv vent fan open for my pets.

Well, what if it rains?

Then you have another problem on your hands.

Your rig will get all wet, potentially getting water inside your walls, causing rot and mold. You may get water on your RV vent fan, potentially damaging it.

Then What About Getting A Vent Fan With A Thermostat And Rain Sensor to Protect My Pets? That Should Do It, Right?

Do not make this potentially fatal mistake! Yes, it sounds like the perfect solution.

Some RV vent fans come with a built-in thermostat that you can set to turn on and open the vent when it reaches your set temperature.

Other RV vents also have a rain sensor to cover the issue of 'what if it rains while I am away?'

  • Read the complete Maxxair MAXXFAN review above (it's our top RV roof fan pick).

In Theory, The RV Vent With Rain Sensor Should Work.

However, we have read MANY reports (and we have firsthand experience with it as well) of these rain sensors getting wet, closing, and refusing to open again after the rain stops.

The sensor seems to think it is still raining or it it's humid enough and if the rain does not evaporate from the sensor, it will refuse to open.

Potentially Fatal Pet Scenario

Insert your pet into this situation. (Please don't in real life) You leave your RV for an 8 hour day of exploration, and it rains at 9 am.

Your rain sensor kicks in and closes the vent. The rain quickly stops and the sun comes out, but your sensor is still wet and it's not going to open.

Now your pet is in real trouble!

Your RV acts much like a car in that it will heat up QUICKLY. Leaving your pets inside with that kind of risky vent fan could be fatal to them.

(Yes, even if you leave some windows open.)

Enter the Maxxair Vent Fan. It comes with NO rain sensor. It doesn't need one because it comes with a rain guard installed into the unit.

Therefore, you can set the thermostat for it to come on at a particular temperature, and it will come on and STAY on (barring your batteries dying) until the temperature drops back down.

For more about this model, we have reviewed the rest of it under our "Best Overall" model.

Quietest RV Vent Fan

Fan-Tastic Vent Fan

  • Many available options
  • Known for quality
  • No integrated rain cover
  • Rain sensor (optional) may not always work

The Fantastic Fan is arguably the best-known RV vent fan name in the industry. They opened for business as "Fan-Tastic Vent" in the mid-'80s and haven't looked back.

The Fan-Tastic Vent Fan lineup can be a bit confusing. We've narrowed down the options. There are 5 retail fan models in the lineup.

Pricing is so close between some of them that we opted to list only the low end, the middle option, and the top of the line Fantastic Fan.

  • 3 fan speeds
  • Manual lift dome
  • Built-in thermostat
  • Reversible air flow
  • 13 fan speeds
  • Automatic lift dome

Continue Reading Fan-Tastic Vent Fan Review

From their beginnings as a 4 employee company to surviving a total-loss fire in 1997 to being acquired by Atwood Mobile Products in 2010, Fan-Tastic Fans have sold over 3 million fans.

They are quite famous for their customer service. However, since Atwood (Dometic) purchased the company, things have changed.

Used to be, the Fan-Tastic fans had an unlimited warranty. That 'unlimited' part has expired, due to the new acquisition.

Under Atwood/Dometic, now the Fan-Tastic Fan has a 2-year warranty on parts and labor. Lifetime warranty on the dome, but after 5 years, shipping charges would apply.

That's still a decent warranty for a Fan-Tastic Vent fan, but it greatly diminishes the appeal and almost cult-like following that the Fan-Tastic fan used to have.

Well, you have quite an array of choices.

There's the most basic model which features a three-speed fan with one-way airflow and a manual opening.

The most deluxe model includes a remote, rain sensor, and 13-speed settings. They have models in between.

No Manual Controls On Remote Fantastic Models

The remote equipped model doesn't include manual controls on the fan so you can only control via the remote.

Also the remote has no screen indicating what mode or speed it is in. This can be confusing.

Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe includes both fan mounted manual controls and a screen on the remote that indicates what mode and speed the fan is running at.

Quietest? Fantastic Fan VS Maxxair

All of the Fantastic Fan RV vent models are very quiet.

Some long-term customers might argue that the newer ones are not as quiet as the old ones, but overall these are still in the line as one of the quietest.

The competition here between Maxxair fans and Fan-Tastic fan is VERY close. You would be hard-pressed to hear the difference if they were placed side-by-side.

Fantastic Fan Review

Pets And Fantastic Fans

If you do NOT have animals in your RV, you may prefer the Fan-Tastic Fan over the Maxxair fan in that it does have the rain sensor (though the Maxxair's integrated cover eliminates the need for a rain sensor).

Keep in mind that sometimes the Fan-Tastic Vent fan rain sensor will stay wet even after the lid has closed from rain.

It won't open again until it's dry. This can be a frustrating, but that's not to say it happens every time.

If you do have pets in your RV, this RV vent fan model is NOT the best option for you.

Your pets could get stuck inside your rig with no air circulation on a hot sunny day after a quick shower.

If you have pets, please consider ONLY the Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe model with the built-in rain cover.

Another option would be to install a vent cover over your Fan-Tastic fan. This would allow you to keep the lid open and the fan ventilating the interior even when it is raining outside.

Of course, by the time you add on this additional expense, you might as well go with the Maxxair. Besides, vent covers are not the prettiest things in the world.

  • You can download the Fantastic Vent Fan installation and operation manual here (PDF).

Fantastic-Fan RV Vent Features and Specs:

  • 3 or 10-speed fan (depending on RV vent model)
  • 920 CFM (cubic feet per minute) airflow
  • Amperage draw between about 1.8 and 3+ amps (model and speed-dependent)
  • All RV fan models have exhaust modes (Intake mode optional)
  • Available thermostat
  • Single lifting arm
  • Available remote control (remote model has no controls on the actual fan)
  • Fits standard 14 x 14-inch opening
  • Warranty: 2-year parts & labor. 5 years additional parts (freight charges apply). Lifetime on the dome (after 4 years, freight charges apply).

Best RV Roof Fan on a Budget

Fan-Tastic Fan EZ-Breeze

  • Moves less than half the air volume of the other vent fans reviewed
  • One speed fan
  • Zero options

If you need an affordable camper roof vent fan, then the Fan-Tastic Fan EZ-Breeze might be right for you. Maybe.

If you just want a basic fan that works, or for a cheap RV roof vent replacement, the EZ-Breeze is a good option.

The Fantastic EZ-Breeze is a single-speed roof vent fan that only blows in one direction and acts as an RV exhaust fan.

The built-in rain cover is pretty slick.

It allows you to run the RV fan while it's raining outside without needing to purchase a separate vent cover like you have to with other Fan-Tastic Vent fans .

You can also run the roof vent fan with the rain cover in the closed position, allowing for a ceiling fan mode.

So what's wrong with this RV roof fan? There are a few things.

This fan is not very powerful, only moving 350 CFM of air (as compared to 900+ CFM of air for the other roof fans reviewed).

It's a single-speed, so it's either on or off. It has zero bells and whistles (except for the built-in rain cover).

Why would you purchase this fan?

If you need an affordable RV roof fan to replace the cheap fan that was installed in your RV, this is an option.

It will be a lot better than the standard unit (unless you have one of those fancy RVs with a 'real' fan installed from the factory.

But just know, this isn't nearly as good of an option as one of the other reviewed units.

If you absolutely must have a sub-$100 fan, then the Fan-Tastic Vent EZ-Breeze is your best option.

Just don't expect it to vent out huge volumes of air quickly, or clear out the smoke from that food you just burned on the stove.

Fantastic EZ-Breeze RV Vent Features and Specs:

  • Available with either a white or smoke colored dome
  • Single-speed - 350 CFM (cubic feet per minute) airflow
  • Built-in rain cover that can be closed to allow a ceiling fan mode
  • Warranty: 2-year parts & labor. 5 years additional parts (freight charges apply). Lifetime on dome (after 4 years freight charges apply).

By now you should be able to make an educated decision on which vent fan is best for your unique situation.

There's not one perfect RV roof vent fan for all scenarios. Therefore, knowing the perks of each is key to finding the perfect fan for your rig.

Get that vent fan as soon as possible so you can get out and enjoy your camping trips even more.

If you have a question, please read the comments below to make sure it hasn't already been answered. If it hasn't pop your question in there, and we will answer it if it's an intelligent, reasonable question that we know the answer to!

Very practical content!!!

Thank you Miaaa! We’re glad you found it useful.

Hi! Really enjoyed your informative article about vent fans. My wife and I are working on a camper van conversion and have gotten to the vent fan phase. In our research we found many complaints about Maxx Air fans having problems with the board burning out due to voltage being above 13.8. This is the only aspect that is delaying our purchase. Do you have any insight as to how to avoid board burnout?

I haven’t heard of this issue, but then again I don’t have much experience with the van build community. But in the RVing community (as in, rigs made in a factory), I haven’t heard of any complaints about this.

Have you contacted MaxxAir about this? Sometimes it’s best to go straight to the source… 😉

Hi Marshall, I have been researching everything for our camper van build and had only recently found this problem discussed in a couple of forums. According to many comments Maxx Air is aware, but hasn’t found a solution. I don’t know why they haven’t just added a regulator to protect the board. If you go to you tube there are several videos showing the procedure for adding the voltage regulator. My problem is that I don’t know which regulator to use. Good luck on your build.

Electricity is the most confusing topic for me, and always has been dating back to my time as an aircraft mechanic a couple of decades ago. But I do have a pretty good understanding of how 12-volt electrical systems work, including the charging of batteries.

14.4 volts is a common voltage for either a solar charge controller or a converter charger (when plugged into shore power) to use when charging a battery. Which means when the battery(ies) are being charged, the entire 12-volt system is ‘seeing’ this voltage.

Which means that every RV with a MaxxAir fan would be having board issues. Unless I’m missing something here.

I wonder if there isn’t something else going on with van builds? Not sure what, but possibly electrical systems being designed by people who aren’t electrical engineers? I don’t know, just seems curious.

These YouTube videos that show how to add a voltage regulator don’t say which one(s) to use? If that’s the case, then they seem to be doing a disservice.

Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you. Just seems like something odd is going on here.

I have a Fan-Tastic Vent Fan in my previously-owned 2017 Lance 1475 trailer. It has a manual open, 3-speed, and another knob that appears to be for air flow direction. However, it only works in the outflow direction which is good. When I turn the knob in the middle (neutral) position and allow the fan blade to stop and then turn it for the downward flow (ceiling fan) position, I hear a slight “click” noise but nothing happens…the blades don’t turn. My opinion is: The prior owner must have turned the air-flow direction adjustment without letting the blades come to a full stop before changing their direction; thus, damaging the control. It appears the model you show has a separate toggle-type switch for air-flow direction. Do you know if there is a minor fix to this issue or if there is a fan part I might purchase & install to rectify my dilemma? P.S. thoroughly enjoyed this article…..I did not have any prior knowledge of the MaxxAir Deluxe “all-in-one” fan and cover and am seriously considered it for my bath.

Hey Brenda,

Thanks for checking out Camp Addict! Glad you liked this article.

I have a 2014 Lance 1995, and I’m guessing my Fan-Tastic fan is the same as yours. Mine is one direction only – outflow. The other knob on mine is a temperature knob. You can set it to have the fan turn itself on/off at a certain temp.

The knob has red and blue markings on it for cold and hot. But no actual temperature indications. So it’s not exactly useful for setting an actual temperature.

I never use the temp knob. I have the fan either on or off.

Does that sound like what this second knob is on yours?

I like the MaxxAir a lot. Especially since you don’t have to worry about keeping it open when there is a chance of rain and you want to be gone from the RV. I’ve been threatening to put one in my bathroom as well. Just haven’t gotten around to it.

Thank you for your reply, Marshall. Yes, the knob in question is half red/half blue….but the fan only works if it is turned to the blue portion. As I previously mentioned, there is a barely noticeable “click” when it is turned into the red half and then the fan stops. I just viewed a video made in 2011 where a man states: “All OEM Fantastic-Fans installed in Airstreams, etc can ONLY be exhaust fans and cannot bring air INTO the coach by industry code”. I assume, if I turn the knob into the red area and had the vent open, the thermostat function would automatically start the fan if it became extremely hot. He also mentioned something about after-market fans having both in & out direction fans. So, I guess I’ll be looking at the Model 2250 mentioned in your article because I enjoy having a “ceiling fan” blowing down on me at night!

You are correct on how the thermostat knob works. The fan will turn on eventually once it’s hot enough in your rig (with the knob into the red ‘zone’).

Definitely having a breeze blow on you at night is really nice when it’s warmer out. Since I still have the stock, exhaust only, roof fan I just use a portable 12 volt fan to blow on me when I need it. One more step, but at least I have total control over where exactly the airflow is.

Hello, Great info on roof fans! Does anyone make a bathroom fan (6.5” circular) that works on the same principle as the MaxAir and Fantastic fans? We need to replace ours and would like to avoid having to cut a 14×14” hole in the ceiling to get the benefits of these fans. Thank you. Joe

Glad you like this page!

If by same principle, you mean moving a high volume of air… Nope! It’s simply a matter of needing a large diameter hole in your roof to move a big volume of air.

There are a couple of circular vent options I found that fit a 6.25″ opening:

Ventline makes a Vanair vent with a claimed airflow of 100 CFM.

Maxxair makes the MAXXFAN Dome with a claimed airflow of 200 CFM

Neither of these come close to the 900+ CFM you can achieve with the larger fans.

As they say in the car world, no replacement for displacement, or in this case, size of hole in your roof. 🙂

I’ve read that there are warranty problems with the Maxxair fan if you buy it through Amazon. I tried to buy through their company and it looks like they want you to buy from a local vender….

Where did you read this? Unfortunately you can’t believe everything you read online.

Always ask the manufacturer to confirm any rumors you hear online. That’s how you get the best answer. 😉

We asked Airxcel (Maxxair manufacturer) the following question:

“Is there any truth to the rumor that if a Maxxair fan is purchased from Amazon that the warranty is not honored?”

This is their response:

“That rumor is not true. If the product is purchased new, we will honor the warranty regardless of who it sold through.”

They seem to very responsive to email inquires. We received that response in less than 24 hours. Feel free to reach out to them at [email protected] if you have further questions.

Maybe silly question, but is there an amp/watts draw difference in these fans, if you’re most concerned with best fan for least energy use? Thx so much…N

Definitely not a silly question!

The amperage draws of each fan (or at least a range) is shown in the ‘Features and Specs’ section at the very bottom of each review. Open up the ‘Continue Reading…’ toggle to see the complete review and then scroll to the bottom to see the specs.

Both the Fantastic Fan and the Maxxair consumer essentially the same. Yes, there is a slight difference, but not enough to make your eyes want to pop out of your head. So you can just go with whichever suits your needs.

Thx, still having trouble finding those amperage draws. N-

Go to the reviews section above. Scroll down to view the individual reviews (in the gray boxes). At the bottom of each individual review gray box you will see where it says “continue reading **name of product** review”. Click on this to open the full review. Scroll to the bottom of the full review to the “Features and Specs” section. This is where you will find amp draw.

Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe: Max amperage draw at full speed/power: 3.7 amps (will use about .2 amp at low-speed) Fantastic-Fan: Amperage draw between about 1.8 and 3+ amps (model and speed dependent)

I swapped out our original fantastic fan for a really nice Maxxair. I can’t remember the model but it comes with a cool wireless remote which has Temp control, Variable Speed Control 0-100 percent, my only gripe is the rain cover, rattles in the wind, (clips into the mounting) but i’m going to fit that.

Isn’t it ‘fun’ when things rattle in the wind, especially when you are trying to sleep?

The cover I have over my non-Maxxair vent in my bathroom rattles like crazy when the wind hits it right. You have to wonder if the people that make these things actually use them? Yeah, that’s a pretty rhetorical question…

Glad to hear that you like the Maxxair otherwise! We feel like it’s the best roof vent fan available.

Thanks for the comment and Camp On!

Two of my three OEM fans died after about 7 years of use. After reading your review about the pet friendliness, I purchased two Maxxair Deluxe fans (without remotes as I have too many remotes lying around). I’m super happy with my purchase. My mobile RV guy installed them easily and quickly. My first impression: they are very quiet! Today was the first rain day since installation. Awesome having the built in rain covers! I do have two traveling RV cats, which influenced my choice of Maxxair over Fantastic. Muchas gracias Camp Addict!

Hey SnappyWanderer!! Thanks for the great comment and feedback for other readers to hear about this fan! We are glad to hear you love your Maxxairs. And glad you had the information out there to make a smart pet purchase. The thought of the Fantastic Fans closing with even just a little rain and possibly putting pets in jeopardy is horrible. I hope nobody ever makes that mistake again. The built-in rain covers are where it’s at!

Get out there chica, and Camp On!

Thank you so much for including a recommendation for pets. This was exactly what I was looking for!

Excellent! We want to help keep pets in RVs safe, so the Maxxair is the clear winner for the reasons we stated. We hope you are happy with your new Maxxair, and thanks for your nice comment! Not everyone does and we appreciate you taking the time to do so. Camp On, girlie!

I have a Maxx-air fan. I have to put my hand all the way up to the fan to feel the air coming in. It seems like a very poor air mover. Is your experience with the fantastic fan different?

It sounds like there is some setting or something else wrong with your Maxair fan. I’d reach out to the company and get some assistance on their end.

Just a few nights ago we were in an RV that was full of people watching TV and someone commented how stuffy it was, so we turned the Maxxair fan (which that RV had) on low, cracked open the door, and in a matter of a minute people were complaining how cold it was. So the fan was pulling a lot of air thru even on low. So they definitely do the job when working properly.

Best of luck getting yours figured out!

Hello! Thank you so much for all that you do for Outdoors enthusiasts like me. Do you have any information you can share about best roof AC for small campers or vans?

Thanks for letting us know you are digging Camp Addict! We strive to eventually have every category imaginable under the sun about RVing, camping, vanning, etc. Unfortunately, we have not researched AC’s yet and cannot give you any tips on what to get. Hopefully, it’s not going to be too long until we get there!

We hope you are out there camping regardless, and if you aren’t, DO IT, and Camp On, Romina!

Thank you so much for your educated advice & knowledge on the RV roof fans. I’ve been painlessly searching for help on what is best to replace my RVs bathroom fan. I replaced my AC unit with the MaxxiFan deluxe model. Im still in the process of hooking it up, but I do have it in. The advice on the solar panels, which I’m going to install in a few weeks is great, I didn’t think about that! Guess I need to save up a little more to get the fan you highly recommend. Again thxs for the info, & making my decision a better one. ? Happy Roads to you!! Ms. Rose B

Hello Rose B,

We are very happy to know that our RV roof fan page has helped you out! We love hearing that what we are doing is helping others know their RV products better than they would without it. Thanks for commenting, and Camp On, Rose!!

Thanks so much for the reviews – my primary concern is keeping my old rescue pitbull cool and comfortable, and your review is the only one I found that included a choice specifically for pets! I followed your link and ordered the Maxxfan Deluxe today 🙂

Hi Jen, that’s great to hear! Yep, we love pets so we wanted to make sure to cover which fan was the SAFEST for pets, as they are precious! In related news- I just got a new app the other day… one that doesn’t need a monthly subscription to monitor. It’s called Presence. I think I did pay for it, but there’s no monthly fee. All you need for it to work is an old smartphone, iPad or other device to use as a camera. Point the device at a temperature gauge in your rig, and walla- you will always be able to see how hot (or cold) it is inside. Also, you can monitor what is going on inside of your rig. Use it for security or to watch what your dog is doing while you are away! Pretty cool, eh? Thanks for using our link and thus supporting Camp Addict. We hope you enjoy your new fan! Camp on, Jen!

Hi Phil, we have a Gidget Retro Teardrop Trailer that was made in Australia in 2017. Our space is very limited on top to place an electric vent fan, and wondered if you could recommend anything smaller than 14×14? Was looking for 12×12 but no luck (yet), did find Ventline Ventair which is diameter of 6 1/4″ round. Pefect size, but no extras it appears. But we might not have a choice. Also the body is made out of fiberglass, so a tad worried about cutting a hole (we are using a professional to do this). Just a little scared to make a change (but a well needed one to circulate air).

Unfortunately 14×14 is the industry standard, so that’s what the RV roof vent manufacturers make their products to fit. The one exception that we are aware of is what you mention, the round 6.25″ style fans that are just fans. These are popular with smaller trailer manufacturers as a bathroom vent fan.

Your best bet, if you want a vent fan that actually will vent any amount of air, is to go the 14 x 14 route.

Best of luck and Camp On!

Thanks for doing all this analysis! We’re converting the largest version of the Transit van. We have decided to have two fans, but curious if it makes sense to spend the money on 1 Delux AirMaxx and then maybe go cheaper on the second fan, like a Fantastic. SO many decisions! Thanks again, looking forward to reading more!

You are very welcome Olivia!

Isn’t that the truth? Sooooo many decisions, especially when you are doing a build-out on your own. I’d probably suffer from analysis paralysis! ?

I’d definitely go with at least one Maxxair just because they are so much the better option, in our opinion. The second fan is up to you (says Captain Obvious), but if it were my rig I know which way I’d go. ?

Thanks for the input and best of luck with the build!

What is vent mode vs ceiling fan mode?

Vent mode is when the roof vent cover is open and you are ‘sucking’ air (or venting) out of your rig. Ceiling fan mode (not available on all roof vents) is when you run the fan with the cover closed, recirculating the air already inside your rig (not bringing fresh air in).

I have a NV200 cargo van that I’m turning into a camper. It has a much smaller volume than most to ventilated. I like the EZ-Beeze’s low profile and built-in rain cover. It looks like I could install the solar panels above it. Do you see any issue with it ventilating that small a place? I would expect to run it all night to handle respiration moisture and heat, so power draw and noise matter.

Interesting application… Yeah, I would think that this might work with the low profile of the EZ-Breeze. Just keep in mind, when you are installing solar panels right on top of the EZ-Breeze (obviously with sufficient clearance), that you need to have somewhere for the vented air to go. Obviously it will go out between the roof and the solar panels, but you want somewhere for it to ‘escape’ not too far away from the EZ-Breeze, I would think. You might want to contact Fan-Tastic directly to get their opinion.

Very nice vent-fan iterative evaluation! I have limited room on my Nissan NV High Roof. I’m going to go with 2 – 180w Grape Solar panels and a Penguin II 13.5k roof ac in the rear. I’d like to dual task the front 2 solar panels above one or possibly two Fan-Tastic Easy breeze fans facing away from the passenger or awning side (I could probably fit them under 1 panel easy, but it would be more of a spoiler effect if both the front panels were adjacent, imo.) 1. What is the minimum height distance from the roof should the solar panels be placed above? 2. Are there any metal covers for Fan-Tastic fans, like Heng’s 90114-C1 Universal Roof Vent Lid – Metal, to shield wi-fi radiation? Thank You for your expertise!

Thank you, Phil! We are very proud of the site and are happy you are getting informed by it as well.

To answer your questions: 1. To find out the clearance, we suggest installing the vent first. Then measure the height needed to allow the vent cover to be fully opened, THEN get the brackets you will use to mount the solar panels.

2. We are not aware of a metal lid that Fantastic Fan makes. You may have to fabricate your own.

Good luck, have fun with your installs, and Camp On, Phil!

Thank You Kelly. One thing I have noticed is there is a Fan-Tastic Vent U1500BL Ultra Breeze Vent Cover which almost looks rain proof is not mentioned in your article. It has hundreds of near perfect 5 ratings on Amazon.

And with 13 speeds, quietest rating, and remote control, the Fantastic vent 807350 7350 looks unbeatable (professionally installed though!) The MaxxAir has one speed which is also the LOUDEST of all fans, so it is not even in the ballpark with me. I have blast shock tbi from Army firing and mortar range, and the MaxxAir fan would put me on my knees!

As well, the MaxxAir 900 cfm would suck contaminated particulates in my van since my Dometic Penguin II 13.5k btu AC is only 335 cfm max: my clean air source. Instead of one speed like the loudest MaxxAir, the 7350 Fantastic remote vent has 13 speeds, so I’m sure I can get just below 335 cfm and as well, a more manageable sound pollution.

Thank you for your extensive and exhaustive vent fan survey! I would have never figured it out o/w.

Sorry for the confusion, but the MaxxAir Deluxe roof vent fans that we review on this page actually have 10 speeds so you can ‘crank’ them way down if you wish. It doesn’t have to be full blast all the time. ☺️ They too come with an available remote control and we LOVE the integrated rain shield (speaking from experience, the after market shields are big, bulky, and ‘love’ to shade solar panels).

I also wanted to point out that rooftop air conditioners only recirculate the interior air. They don’t pull in fresh air from the outside. So your only source of fresh air (other than windows and doors) would be the roof top vent fan (Fan-Tastic, MaxxAir, or whatever you choose to install).

Thanks for the great comments and we hope you enjoy building out your van. Should be quite the adventure mobile!

I need a roof vent fan that has a outside height of less than 3.5inches to clear my garage door. Do you have a recommendation for such a product. Many Thanks, Cliff

3.5 inches? Wow, you don’t have much clearance. ????

I just climbed on top of my rig to see what my Fantastic Fan height is and it’s somewhere in the 4.5-5 inch range, so definitely doesn’t meet your requirements. Maxxair makes a Fantastic Fan style roof vent (not the one that we feature on this page), but it appears to be at least as tall as the Fantastic Fan. Not sure you are going to find anything ‘slimmer’ than these – at least I don’t know of any.

Don’t you have other things on your roof that stick up more than 3.5 inches? I’ve got tons of stuff up there that is ‘bumpy’ including the air conditioner, TV antenna, solar panel, holding tank vents and skylights. I’d be really curious to know what type of rig you have that has nothing sticking up on the roof.

The Best Portable Fans For Campers

' src=

Twenty-two fellow truck campers recommend their favorite portable fans; 12-volt, 110-volt, and battery-powered. One hybrid fan completely blew the rest away.

Best Portable Fan For RVs And Campers

Fans are not exactly a new technology, nor is their function particularly novel. However, there have been some important innovations with power, design, and portability, and one company seems to be the air apparent to the best portable fan for truck campers. Drum roll, please…

THE BEST: Ryobi 18-Volt/120-Volt One+ Hybrid Fan

It’s almost comical how many readers heaped praise on the Ryobi 18-Volt/120-Volt One+ Hybrid Fan (#P3320). What’s even funnier to us is that we too have the same Ryobi 18-Volt/120-Volt One Plus Hybrid Fan, and love it. This summer we have used the Ryobi nearly every day in our camper.

Ryobi Portable Fan For Camping Winner

Above: The Ryobi 18-Volt/120-Volt One+ Hybrid Fan (#P3320)

About two years ago, Mikeee Tassinari – aka the Grand Poobah of the North-East Truck Camping Jamboree – had this same Ryobi fan at a camper gathering. When we admired his fan – “Say, that’s a nice fan, Mikeee” – he practically made a late-night infomercial presentation. By the time he was done, Angela was completely convinced, and I might have joined Amway . “If you act now…”

Mikeee roasting aside, his fan recommendation was spot on. This fan is very quiet at its low speed, and moves a ton of air at its high speed. We regularly use it on low to sleep in warm weather and high during the day. Even better, our larger 4-amp hour batteries (sold separately, of course) run for about eight hours on low (there are also 6-amp hour batteries for those who want even more power).

Whenever we get 110-power, the Ryobi batteries are the first things we charge.  You can also get Ryobi’s 12-volt charger if you want to keep them constantly charged while boondocking.

Thank you to everyone who sent in their favorite fans. Anyone who’s done enough truck camping knows how vital these tools can be. Stay cool.

Here are the results:

“I have a Milwaukee 18-volt battery-operated portable fan. It’s portable, quiet, and we carry the Milwaukee batteries for other tools. We normally get three nights out of one 9-amp battery at low speed.” – David Hawes, 2019 Ford F-450, 2020 Arctic Fox 1140

Makita Fan For Campers

“I have a Makita DCF102Z 18-volt LXT fan. It works with LXT batteries or the UpBright 12-volt AC adapter .

This fan has three speeds, can articulate, and has a three-position auto shut-off timer. It also moves enough air and uses Mikita LKT batteries. I use the same batteries with my cordless drill to raise and lower my Hallmark camper. It also takes up minimal space in my camper. I store it in the wet bath.” – Arthur Forman, 2021 Ford F-350, Hallmark UTE/Everest

“The Dewalt 20-volt Jobsite fan can be used with a cord or cordless, so it’s perfect. It’s a great all-around fan; quiet with excellent battery life and portability.” – Mike Cabbage, Ford F-250, Lance 855

“I have a Ryobi hybrid fan that is both AC and 18-volt compatible. It was purchased at Home Depot. It’s the perfect size and has good airflow. The dual power options work well for me.” – Jonathan Hart, 2020 Silverado 1500, Sunlite converted to hard side

Ryobi 18 Volt 120 Volt One Plus Hybrid Fan

“I have a Ryobi 18-volt/120-volt One Plus Hybrid Fan .

It uses the same Ryobi 18 One+ batteries as my power tools. The fan will last all night on low using one of our 6Ah batteries. When we have 120VAC power, we can remove the battery and plug the fan in using an extension cord. It’s the best of both worlds in one unit.” – Frank Mertes, 2018 Ram 5500, 2018 Eagle Cap 1165

“I have a 120-volt fan that I clamp to a storage tray near the ceiling of the bedroom. It will either push hot air out of the bedroom in the summer or into the bedroom during cold weather.

The clamp mount makes it useful for everything from bedroom air circulation to once thawing my under-sink water pump. It’s available at many places like Target and Fleet Farm.” – Philip Tron, 2009 Chevy 3500, 2012 Lance 1050

Aluan Desk Fan Small Table Fan With Strong Airflow

“I mounted a 12-volt USB two-speed fan on the wall next to the bed. The angle is easily adjusted. The fan is quiet and efficient. I highly recommend it. It’s available on Amazon.

It’s called an Aluan Desk Fan . It’s a small table fan with strong airflow, quiet operation adjustable speed, and a head that is 360-degree rotatable.” – Terry Fleming, 1999 F250, 2018 Adventurer 80RB

“We have a 110-volt Vornado from ACE Hardware. I like it for the low noise level, the volume of flow, and the R2D2 shape and design.” – Mike Simpson, 2017 Ford F-350, 2017 Phoenix pop-up

Roadpro RP8000 Fan For Camping

“We have a Roadpro RP8000 fan that is both 12-volt and D-cell battery operated. I bought it off Amazon.

We like to boondock in our truck camper, so this two-speed, 12-volt fan is perfect. It’s only 10-inches square, but fits perfectly into my kitchen window over the sink. It’s quiet. We have several outlets in our Lance 992, so we can move it around.

We have used it outside to try to repel mosquitos. I do have to tell you that removing the D-cell batteries is a struggle.” – Russell Erbe, 2013 GMC Sierra 3500HD, 2021 Lance 992

“I have a Sirocco II fan. It uses 12-volts and it’s very, very low on amp draw. It was built for sailboats so it’s very quiet and powerful. This fan was made in Canada and backed by a very good warranty. It can be bought on Amazon, but we had a cheaper price from a marine supplier in Quebec City.

The fan is fully adjustable at any angle, has three speeds, and has a timer for two, four or six-hours.” – Richard C Raymond, 2018 GMC Sierra 3500, 2014 Lance 1172

Ryobi Fan Truck Campers

“I have a Ryobi 7.5-inch whisper quiet 18-volt One+ fan . You can get it from Home Depot or Amazon.

This fan is quiet, lightweight, very portable, has the ability to tilt and, with a 4 amp-hour battery, it will last a long time. I also carry various Ryobi tools, so I can share the batteries” – David Fradkin, 2017 GMC 3500, 2017 Lance 975

Fantastic Vent Endless Breeze Fan

“We have a Fan-Tastic Vent 01100WH Endless Breeze 12-volt fan . It’s 12-volt only. Fellow truck camper, Roy Garland, had one at a gathering and we ordered it via Amazon before leaving camp.

This is a more expensive fan than some, but it works great. It looks like most places are out of stock at the moment.

The Endless Breeze has low power consumption, decent air flow, and acceptable noise given that it’s an open fan. It has a long cord, so it’s easy to move around. We also can hang it by the handle.” – Anne Brown, 2014 Ford F-450, 2020 Host Mammoth

Sky Genius Clip On Fan

“We already had a Sky Genius, USB-powered (5-volt) battery operated fan . In September of 2021, we paid $19.99. It is a clip-on mini desk fan, 5-volt USB, and battery-operated (2600mAh). It has rotary speed control and will normally run for three to six hours depending on the speed.

Sky Genius Fan Again Being Used In The Over Cab Bedroom Anderson

If we plug it into a USB port, it will run continuously. I even ordered a second one. As of July 2022, it’s $23.99 on Amazon .

TriPole Car Fan In Camper

I also ordered the TriPole car fan , which is USB powered only. It is a desktop with dual fans that both tilt and swivel. The unit has independent control with a push button on/off and three speeds. Because of the higher current draw, it can run both fans on a standard USB at lower speeds only.

USB Port On The Go Power Solar Charge Controller

It requires a 2-amp USB port to run both fans at the highest speed. After looking inside, I mounted it upside down on the ceiling. In September 2021 it was $18.99. Now it’s $29.99.

Portable Fan Tripole Car

In September of 2021, we were returning to our home in southern Arizona and decided to camp in the mountains at Theodore Roosevelt Lake. It had been very hot driving through Kansas and New Mexico and we mistakenly believed that being in the mountains of northeast Arizona would give us some relief from the 100-degree temperatures that we had encountered earlier in the trip. WRONG! The temperatures at the lake were 100.

There were no electric sites. Running our generator so that we could use the air conditioner did cool the inside of our camper, but at the cost of extreme noise and vibration. By 10pm the outside temperatures decreased to 85 and I could turn off the generator and air conditioner. I turned on the roof fan and the one USB-powered battery-operated fan that we had. That fan was a lifesaver and I vowed to add more.” – David Anderson, 2018 GMC 3500HD, 2020 Adventurer 89RB

“I have a Honeywell battery-operated fan. It also works on 110-volts. It’s great for the cabover on warm nights. I purchased the fan at Canadian Tire, but it is also available on Amazon. I like this fan for its size and the fact that you can’t even hear it running.” – Bill Londry, 2018 GMC 3500, 2017 Adventurer 86FB

“I have a Rigid fan from Home Depot that’s 18-volt and 110-volt compatible. I can use battery power or plug it in. Also, I can attach the USB inverter to the battery to charge any cell phones, etc.” – Tommy LaPlante, 1994 Frontier

Ryobi One Plus 18v Lithium On Countertop In Camper

“I have the Ryobi One Plus 18-volt lithium battery or 110-volt hybrid fan (model P3320). It’s sold at Home Depot and online. It’s also sold directly through Discount Tool stores and their website.

This model can use either battery or 110-volt shore power making it convenient to move air boondocking or at a campsite with hookups. With the large four-hour capacity battery on low, we have approximately seven hours of run time.

The main reason for buying Ryobi over other brands is that we already have other tools using the same batteries that we carry on the road. With over two years of use, the quality so far is very good. The fan moves air in the bunk cabover area when it is placed on our countertop. We can also take the fan outside and pamper our Rottweiler “Lemon Moose” on hot days. In the camper, it makes a good addition to our vent fan.” – Eric and Amber Willson, 2003 Dodge Ram, 2021 Palomino HS-2910

“We like our Opolar portable fan. The lithium battery is chargeable with a USB connection. There are three fan speeds, it’s quiet, and very easy to adjust the direction of wind streaming. It also has a robust spring clamp as part of its base. It does the job nicely and is available online.” – Thomas Kees, 2015 F-150, 2019 Northstar 650TC

Home Exclusive 4 Inch Fan When Camping And RVing

“I have a 110-volt plug-in Home Exclusive 4-inch high velocity fan that was made in China. I purchased it years ago at a Walmart somewhere. The air flow is decent. The volume is okay for something this small. The best part is that it is noisy in a white noise way which is useful for those inappropriately noisy campgrounds.” – Larry Pearson, 2017 Ford F-450, 2018 Lance 850

“I have a Ryobi hybrid fan that uses a 18-colt Li-ion battery or 11-volt plug-in.

It’s extremely durable. I accidentally lowered a lot of weight on the fan (in the upright position) and it was unaffected. It should have been crushed or destroyed. I don’t know if it’s the plastic or the design, but it is sturdy.

The comments online are brutal about the cost of the extension cord for 110-volt power. It’s just a simple round female extension plug. I had one in the garage. Eye roll!

We boondock, so it pushes air in to be exhausted by the roof vent. For 2022, Ryobi has more fans; big, small and misting.

I also love the Ryobi DC battery charger which is not included. We are usually off-grid with solar. I find the Ryobi drill, handheld air compressor and handheld vacuum are other truck camper essentials that use the same battery.

I travel with a cat, and she likes the fan too. I like the hand vacuum for stray cat litter.” – Beth Guth, 2018 Ford F-150

“We use two fans; a 12-volt Dewalt for portability and a 110-volt Dyson. The Dyson cools as well as heats. We use the heat in cooler weather in lieu of running the furnace and using propane. It performs well.

You can purchase it at Home Depot or any Dewalt seller. I have multiple batteries as I have many Dewalt tools. The fan is light, adjustable, and relatively quiet.” – Phil Miller, 2015 Chevy 3500, 2019 Eagle Cap 1160

Ryobi P3320 In Popup Camper

“We recently replaced our standard size roof vent (with underperforming 9-inch computer fan rig) with a 10-speed Maxx-Fan. It’s a really nice unit that we have not yet fully experienced. I have thoughts of bringing in cold air on low during heating season and am open to experienced suggestions.

We also use a Ryobi P3320 . This is a small powerful table-type fan that uses their One-Plus 18-volt battery or 120-volt shore power. The best part is putting a small battery in the fan and having it run out after we are asleep, akin to a timer. It is also accommodating with a base and hooks for different positioning sets.

We choose Ryobi because we have a 12-volt battery charger (yes, it boosts up to 18-volts). Also, utilizing those batteries we have the drill driver and reciprocating saw (great for camp firewood) on board.

We like it for its small size, two effective speeds, maximum flexibility to stand, multiple hooks/mounts and power sources.” – Mark Zeisberg, 1994 GMC K2500, 1997 Shadow Cruiser

Treva 10 Inch Portable Fan

“We actually have two fans, and what we like about both of them is that we can use them with 110-volt shore power or rechargeable batteries.

We always carry the Treva 10-inch rechargeable fan . Not only can it run on the included 110-volt adapter, a 12-volt cigarette lighter plug, or the built-in rechargeable lithium batteries, but it can also use eight D-cell batteries. Not that I want to carry around that many D-cell batteries, but it’s an option. The fan is thin, lightweight, and does not take up a lot of space.

More recently, we purchased a Ryobi 18-volt cordless hybrid fan , mostly because we already have several of their 18-volt power tools, batteries, and chargers. It also has the ability to run on 110-volt power.

We like the Treva for inside the camper because it is quieter. However, it does not have as much airflow as the Ryobi does on its high-speed setting. Hence, the Ryobi seems to be a better fit for outside when it is hotter and we need a fan using either the 110-volt power source, or the rechargeable battery.” – Randy and Susan Bundschu, 2013 Chevy Silverado 3500, 2010 Lance 855

Koonie Portable Fan

“I have a Koonie model WH 110/UBS charger . It’s 5-volt with 2-amps of input. The battery is 10000mAh and the power consumption is 5.5-watts. I purchased it from Amazon.

Last night it ran from 10pm to 8am. This morning it still had 30-percent of its battery left! This fan is 8-inches with a clip. I clip it up by the bed and it keeps the air moving very nicely. It has four settings: low 30-percent, medium 60-percent, high 100-percent, and natural. The natural setting is like a windy day.” – Judy Schwarz, 2020 Ford F-450, 2014 Lance 1050S

Warner Brothers has described the bones of the story like so:

In the crime-ridden city of Gotham, Amanda Waller, the head of A.R.G.U.S., has assembled a group of notorious criminals for a mission: Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface, and King Shark. These Super-Villains are sent into an otherworldly realm that’s connected to this world through a gate. It’s a world of swords and magic where orcs rampage and dragons rule the skies—an “ISEKAI”!
With lethal explosives planted in their necks, there’s no running or hiding, and failing the mission means a one-way ticket to the afterlife! Can Harley Quinn and her crew conquer this perilous ISEKAI realm?! Brace yourselves for the pulse-pounding saga of the elite task force known as the “Suicide Squad” as they embark on a jaw-dropping adventure!

Strictly's Gorka Márquez reveals accent criticism from fans

"I got so many messages."

preview for Gorka Marquez talks Gemma Atkinson wedding plans (Channel 4)

The professional dancer recently swapped the dancefloor for a judging role on Bailando con las Estrellas , the Spanish version of Strictly .

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy , Gorka revealed that it was his accent which generated the most attention during his judging stint.

"The most challenging thing was speaking Spanish," he told us. "I get so many comments from people saying, 'Why is he putting on an English accent if he's Spanish?' and I’m like I’m not putting on an English accent, this is how I speak Spanish now.

"People in the UK say I have a strong Spanish accent and people in Spain say I sound like an American speaking Spanish."

"I got so many messages saying, 'Oh my god, your accent'," he continued, explaining: "It’s because most of the time I speak about dancing it’s in English, so when I help to judge them and I have to make a sentence, I translate it from English to Spanish."

Despite the feedback, Gorka "really enjoyed" his time on the show and has admitted he'd "love to do it again".

As for the transition from dancer on Strictly to judge on Bailando con las Estrellas , Gorka admitted it took some getting used to mentally.

"It’s completely different to what I’m used to doing as obviously I’m used to dancing," he said. "The first few weeks was a bit of a challenge, because it was a change to what I’m doing.

"A bit like a manager of a football team, when you were a player and you want to go and play. So, it was a bit of that feeling."

While Gorka is open to reprising his judging role, he was quick to assure that he won't be hanging up his dancing shoes anytime soon.

"I want to keep dancing, so in the UK I’ll stick to dancing," he clarified.

The Strictly professional is currently back on screens with fiancée Gemma Atkinson in the second series of their reality show Gemma and Gorka: Life Behind the Lens.

Viewers can see behind-the-scenes footage of Gorka working on Bailando con las Estrellas and him juggling family time with the couple's two children, daughter Mia and newborn son Thiago .

Gemma and Gorka: Life Behind the Lens airs on the W Channel and UKTV Play on Mondays at 8pm.

Playing at a new level, Anchorage’s Alissa Pili finds her footing and connects with fans

Pili played 10 minutes in her wnba debut in seattle on tuesday and was a fan favorite among the crowd at climate pledge arena..

SEATTLE — Alissa Pili could feel the difference.

Pili, who grew up in Alaska and graduated from Dimond High, stepped on the floor Tuesday at Climate Pledge Arena as a newly minted member of the WNBA.

Playing for the Minnesota Lynx against the Seattle Storm in her pro debut, Pili immediately noticed the difference on the floor with ubiquitous athleticism and a faster style of play than she’d ever experienced.

And while her stat line may not have awed the 8,500 in attendance, Pili, who is Alaska Native and Samoan, was arguably the game’s most resonant player. She posed for pictures with fans before warmups and after the Lynx win, a throng of young admirers were waiting for her, eager to connect with a player that provided them representation at the highest level of the game.

“It’s just such a big stage and you can feel that when you’re out there on the court,” she said. “I definitely felt it tonight. You’re playing against the best players in the world. Every night is going to be challenging but I’m just taking it day by day. The biggest difference for me is getting used to it being such a big stage and it’s cool to see how much (women’s basketball) has grown and to be a part of that.”

Pili didn’t score in 10 minutes of action, but did grab a rebound and was 0-for-1 from the floor. Taking the court less than a month after being drafted by the Lynx as the No. 8 pick, Pili said she was very much still in instructional mode.

“I’m still in a position where I’m learning a lot so I’m just kind of taking advantage of the minutes I do get and going out there and doing what I can to help the team,” she said.

Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve said Pili performed admirably against a Seattle frontcourt that includes 8-time WNBA all-star Nneka Ogwumike and Ezi Magbegor, who was an all-star in 2023.

“It’s been an adjustment but one she’s really embraced,” Reeve said. “She’s embraced the difficulty and has had some ups and downs as every rookie does as she gets her feet under her. ... It was a hard-fought game that Alissa was thrown into. She made some really good basketball plays. Some of them didn’t get completed but she’s doing the right things.”

A contingent of Pili family members made the trip to Seattle for the game including Alissa’s mother Heather and her three sisters Felila, Kayla and Alyna. Heather shot video with her phone from an upper-level suite while 3-year-old Felila — despite the din echoing through the arena — settled in for a short nap.

“It’s pretty amazing to see,” Heather Pili said. “We’re super excited. She deserves it. She’s where she’s meant to be and where she’s dreamed to be. It’s all about her dream and we’re just so happy for her.”

Pili, who graduated from Dimond in 2019, initially opted to go to USC. But after a few relatively lackluster years, she transferred to the University of Utah. There her playing career took off and a 37-point game last season against eventual national champion South Carolina bolstered her draft stock.

In a crowd packed with the green and yellow colors of the Storm, there were a handful of red Utah shirts popping through. That included Carma Garcia, who became a Pili fan at Utah and flew from Salt Lake City with her wife Tuesday morning to watch the debut.

[ From Lynx to Lynx: Alissa Pili’s basketball journey comes full circle in a place that ‘was meant to be’ ]

She paged through photos on her phone taken with family members who met Pili at a game against Southern Utah. Garcia, who is Piaute Native, said Pili’s Native heritage was an initial point of connection. As soon as Pili was drafted by the Lynx, Garcia got online, checked the team schedule and bought tickets that night.

“I was on it like Blue Bonnet,” Garcia said. “She’s a very nice young lady. ... We’re proud to come and see her. I don’t know if she’s going to be a star player or whatever. It doesn’t matter. She made it.”

A dozen rows down at courtside, Renee Pablo and her daughter Lucila were able to coax Pili into a pregame photo. They’d watched Pili play at Climate Pledge Arena during the 2023 NCAA Tournament and continued to follow her career.

“I was really excited when my dad told me he got us tickets for the game,” she said. “I like her because we both have the same ethnicity. She’s really powerful and has really inspired me.”

Lucila, 11, is a basketball player in the Seattle area and Renee said Pili provides an important example of Samoan representation to her daughter.

“We just want her to be around this environment where she can see people that look like her and for her to aspire to,” said Renee Pablo.

Pili worked with Lynx assistant Rebekkah Lamar Brunson in the pregame, shooting shots and working on drills. It’s been a common occurrence since she was drafted on April 15, Pili said. Acclimating a new system with new teammates in a new city has been intense but rewarding.

“It is a toll, just not having a break but at the same time it’s such a great and unique opportunity,” Pili said.

[ Alissa Pili’s homecoming at the Great Alaska Shootout draws a warm welcome, and a record crowd ]

Pili entered with 4:56 remaining in the first quarter after a timeout and played another stretch in the third quarter before checking in for the final minute of the 83-70 Lynx win.

While Olympian Alanna Smith and WNBA all-star Napheesa Collier combined for 42 points to lead Minnesota, Pili proved to be the people’s champion.

After the game, a group of around 50 fans gathered behind one of the baskets, waiting for the Lynx rookie. Pili emerged from the locker room and spent time signing autographs and taking pictures with fans while talking with friends and family.

Among the group was Kenzie Raye McCow and Amaya Nikolao, who both had signs they’d made in support of Pili. Despite both wearing Seattle Storm earrings, the duo said Pili was a favorite and McCow said she’d been watching Pili and fellow WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark longer than any other players.

“I’m American Samoan,” said Nikolao. “It’s pretty amazing to see that people from the same tribe, same culture playing on a basketball court. It’s really inspiring.”

"I love Alissa Pili," said McCow, "because when I first started playing basketball, the two main people that I watched were Alissa Pili and Caitlin Clark. She's just really fun to watch." Both girls were wearing Storm earrings but wore their hair like Pili, with tight braids leading to a long ponytail. (Loren Holmes / ADN)

The duo of 11-year-olds are also basketball players and their coach Jordan Pritchard, who joined them at the arena, said they made the trip specifically to watch Pili.

“We wanted to be here to watch Alissa because there is something powerful about watching somebody that looks like you and moves like you and that maybe has been told her whole life that like basketball won’t be her sport, because of build or body or whatever,” Pritchard said. “And (Alissa) has just proven that wrong. She’s just proven that we can do it too. And so it’s fun to get to see her.”

Taking on the mantle of being a role model is something that started to develop while Pili was at Utah, which has the largest per capita Polynesian population in the Lower 48.

“It’s a blessing to see people come out and especially young girls who are Samoan or Native,” she said. “It’s good to know it carried on to this higher level. It’s something I started in college but I think now that I’m in the league, it’ll grow much more and make more of an impact.”

On the court, Pili said she’s continuing to focus on improvement and feels like once she starts to adjust to the pace of the play, her game will really be able to thrive.

“I’m definitely just trying to soak it all in but at the same time just working hard and not really shying away from anything,” she said. “Just kind of staying true to who I am as a person, as a player.”

Captain America 2 Ruined the Trajectory of the MCU With One Phrase

The Russo Brothers once said they wanted to make Captain America: The Winter Soldier "Honest Trailer proof." Here's how that affected the MCU.

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier is hailed as one of the best MCU films ever because its directors, the Russo Brothers, made sure that it was "Honest Trailer-proof."
  • The success of The Winter Soldier influenced the direction of the MCU, leading to a more formulaic approach that prioritizes logic over emotional storytelling.
  • Recent MCU projects, including movies like Eternals and The Marvels , and TV shows like Secret Invasion and She-Hulk , have received mixed reception due to their departure from the "Honest Trailer-proof" formula and lack of attention to detail.

It's generally agreed upon that 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the strongest entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It kickstarted the blockbuster careers of Anthony and Joe Russo, leading the pair to become some of the highest-grossing directors of all time with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame . In many ways, the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier dictated the direction that the MCU took through Phase Three and beyond. And therein lies a problem.

In a 2014 interview with Collider , Joe Russo admitted to being a fan of ScreenJunkies' popular web series Honest Trailers , and that when making the film, they had decided that "This is not going to end up in an Honest Trailer . This logic isn't sound enough yet. We literally tried to Honest Trailer- proof the movie." Above everything else, it's clear that they wanted to make sure that the film's logic was airtight and that no one would be able to nitpick the film apart -- and it worked. This has made Captain America: The Winter Soldier one of the MCU's heights, though this ended up also being a detriment to the shared universe.

Updated by Timothy Donohoo on May 14, 2024: Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the best Marvel Cinematic Universe sequels and one of the best MCU movies in general. The film was made with a tightness and attention to detail that's yet to be matched, and the shared universe has sadly slipped quite a bit in quality. Thankfully, one upcoming MCU movie will hopefully bring things back to the standard of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Honest Trailers Found Little Fault With Captain America 2

Marvel subpoenas instagram to unmask captain america 4 leaker.

When ScreenJunkies made a humorous Honest Trailer video for the MCU's Captain America: The Winter Soldier , they joked that their jobs had been made much harder by how strong the script was on a technical level. From every angle they tried to nitpick at, the film was impenetrable. The Russos had succeeded. Indeed, their work on The Winter Soldier was so successful that the duo were practically handed the reins of the MCU's third phase.

However, there is a problem with an " Honest Trailer- proof" approach to making movies. It's a small one that has snowballed into becoming a bit of a problem for the MCU. Films are art -- they're a magic trick that uses 24 pictures a second flickering by to induce an emotional reaction in the viewer. Prioritizing creating a logical film over an emotional one is a big risk. It's one that paid off for The Winter Soldier , but it is perhaps not a direction the entire MCU should have taken.

Why Was Captain America: The Winter Soldier So Beloved?

Mcdonald's happy meal toys confirm what fans suspected about captain america 4.

By the time Captain America: The Winter Soldier was released, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was already well into Phase 2. This meant that the shared movie universe had also cemented its formula, especially following the success of 2012's Avengers . Sadly, that movie and the ensuing release of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy two years later solidified the MCU as a somewhat "jokey" series of movies. Despite this seemingly being what audiences wanted from those movies, Captain America: The Winter Soldier went against the grain to the star-spangled tune of success.'

Unlike many of its contemporaries, The Winter Soldier was far from a comedic, breezy romp. Instead, it was a mostly serious affair with the tone and scope of an action-based spy/espionage movie. This matched the tone of modern Captain America comic books, namely the classic run by writer Ed Brubaker. Not only did the story take a more grounded turn, but the same was the case with the movie's action. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was lauded for its realistic action sequences, which largely eschewed bombast for more hard-hitting, choreographed fisticuffs. This gave the movie a strong degree of verisimilitude, making it stand out both from its predecessors, other MCU movies at the time, and those that came afterward.

The MCU Formula Creates a Problem for Standalone Entries

Captain america: brave new world must address a key secret invasion storyline.

One of the biggest criticisms leveled at the MCU is its formulaic nature. In treating filmmaking like solving a high school math problem rather than creating a work of art, Marvel has gradually homogenized the look and feel of its films. It has been too fearful of pushing the boat out, too dedicated to " Honest Trailer- proofing" its projects. It's why more recent MCU movies rarely leave an impression in their own right, as the conversation is instead always around how these films fit into the larger universe, what references they make, or what threads they are setting up. This leaves present-day Marvel in a tricky place.

Films that artistically rock the boat, such as Eternals and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , tend to divide audiences more than the " Honest Trailer- proof" ones. On the one hand, a version of the MCU that takes bigger swings, even if it results in bigger misses, is good. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was an emotionally-driven character piece that was more well-received than the action-packed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania , despite having been released only a few months apart.

However, there are few films like GotG Vol. 3 because of the risks it poses. The " Honest Trailer- proof" films are the ones that tend to make more money and are generally more well-liked but not well-loved. That's a shame because a film that forgoes logic just to make a moment that much more memorable are the films that stick in someone's mind. The MCU doesn't need to make its movies " Honest Trailer- proof;" it needs to get to the heart. The fact that the " Honest Trailer -proof" Captain America: The Winter Soldier is nearly a decade old also speaks to the current direction of the MCU as a whole.

The MCU's Current Projects Are Far From " Honest Trailer -Proof"

'i regretted it deeply': deadpool & wolverine director recalls turning down major x-men film.

As mentioned, many of the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies from Phase 4 and Phase 5 haven't been as universally praised as many of their predecessors, let alone Captain America: The Winter Soldier . In some cases, it's the result of some of these movies bucking certain trends, though the quality of the projects themselves is also a major factor. The aforementioned Eternals was the first MCU movie to be rated as "Rotten" on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, and it's highly contentious among the fandom. One problem was how bloated the cast and story were, with many feeling that it might have worked better as a Disney+ TV series instead of a movie.

Thor: Love & Thunder was seen as a steep step down from its predecessor's quality, namely because it ramped up certain elements from that movie. While the more comedic and bombastic nature of Thor: Ragnarok was highly praised, Thor: Love & Thunder taking these elements into a more over-the-top direction disappointed many. This also happened with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania , which dropped the more low-key tone of the previous movies while failing to earn such an "epic" upgrade. Worst of all, it formally introduced the villainous Kang the Conqueror , who was poised to be the overarching villain of the current Multiverse Saga. His humiliating defeat in the movie took the wind out of his antagonistic sails, however, with most seeing little threat in the character.

The latest MCU movie that failed to reach the same heights was The Marvels . Teaming up Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Photon, the movie was largely seen as a middling, mediocre-at-best film. A big issue is a breezy tone that was completely lacking in tension, something made only worse by the movie's final trailer hyping up the villainous Dar-Benn as a threat on par with Thanos. The movie's reception saw it bring in the worst box office intake in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, proving that most of the studio's current crop of movies are far from " Honest Trailer -proof." It's also rather noticeable that they're almost completely removed from the tone of the successful Captain America: The Winter Soldier . Thus, it's no surprise that these projects likely won't be getting sequels in the MCU .

The Marvels Star Iman Vellani Shares Good News on Ms. Marvel's MCU Future

The first MCU TV series on the Disney+ streaming service was WandaVision , which was widely praised. Even then, it wasn't without faults, with the final episode in particular being heavily criticized. Said conclusion devolved into the sort of generic CGI battle that had at that point become blasé, not to mention ill-fitting for the series in question. While some of the other shows were successful and well-received in their own right, none of them became the pop culture darlings that WandaVision was. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , Moon Knight, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law had much more mixed reception, with the latter in particular being rather controversial in some circles.

Conversely, Moon Knight was noted for its egregious changes to the Moon Knight comics, doing away with the comics' more grounded tone in favor of an overtly supernatural premise. While Ms. Marvel 's earliest episodes received high praise, the latter, rather disjointed developments felt like a different (and inferior) show entirely. It was also the Disney+ Marvel show with the lowest viewership, which likely fed into the box office for The Marvels . The worst of the bunch was easily 2023's Secret Invasion TV series , which faced all manner of behind-the-scenes and direction issues. The most well-received shows since WandaVision were Hawkeye (which received favorable reception) and Loki , with the latter recently completing its second and possibly final season.

The downturn in quality is seen by many fans as a result of the uptick in quantity. Many have noted that the MCU feels like an "assembly line" of projects more than ever, with the previous quality control simply not being as present. Said attention to detail was what made Captain America: The Winter Soldier into a near-flawless, " Honest Trailers -proof" movie, with the creators behind it determined to deliver the best film possible. It was a delicate balancing act that combined crowd-pleasing content with material that wasn't quite what some expected, but the result was easily one of - if not the - best MCU movies ever.

Can Deadpool & Wolverine Save the MCU?

Ryan reynolds & hugh jackman coyly address mcu future after deadpool & wolverine.

The upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine is set to be the third entry in Deadpool's movie series, and it might just bring the Marvel Cinematic Universe back to the level of Captain America: The Winter Soldier . As was the case with its predecessors, the movie will be full of tongue-in-cheek humor that breaks the fourth wall. This includes jokes about Marvel Studios creative lead Kevin Feige , and the same will likely be the case with the downward trajectory of the MCU's quality. The movie may even be ironically heartfelt due to the return of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, and this could be a big part in getting audiences interested again. In many ways, it will be a repeat of sorts for Spider-Man: No Way Home , which was one of the last MCU movies that audiences generally cared about. While some might enjoy it simply for the plethora of planned cameos , it's clear that the movie has a lot of thought behind it.

For one, it may play an integral role in introducing mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This can lead to all manner of political and social allegories, such as the kind seen in the espionage story of Captain America: The Winter Soldier . Conversely, it can also help build up to Avengers: Secret Wars , which is a massive crossover that currently has very little hype from mainstream audiences. Adding in fan-favorite characters and delivering must-see projects involving them is the key to reinvigorating interest in the shared universe. Whether this will merely be felt for the third Deadpool movie or not, the quality of older movies such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier show what can be achieved when directors set out to make something great.
