Does anyone know the name of the song at the start of the second Canada segment?

Good episode. The lawyers in the Tesla Model X trial were funny. They have once again proved that they are ambitious but void. It is true that James flowing at the end of the episode recalls the end of Top Gear Special Vietnam.

Solid episode, I got Vietnam flashbacks at the end xD. However, Paris Hilton’s presence was just annoying to me, she looked so out of place.

Clarkson reviews Tesla Model X after 10-year hiatus from the Roadster

' src=

Jeremy Clarkson’s reviewed the Tesla Model X on The Grand Tour in the Season 2 Episode 10 was largely positive, with the veteran auto host lauding the SUV for its raw performance and features. During the car’s segment on the Amazon show, Clarkson pointed out several of the Model X’s innovations that he particularly liked, including its Summon feature, its Easter Eggs, and of course, its insane acceleration.

The segment began with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May explaining why they have not reviewed a Tesla in a while, citing the lawsuit that ensued after Top Gear’s arguably scathing review of the original Roadster. According to the hosts, however, Tesla has grown so much over the years that it is now pretty much impossible to deny the company’s presence in the auto industry. Thus, in The Grand Tour’s SUV-focused episode, lead host Jeremy Clarkson decided to check out if the Model X is a vehicle that he could like.

grand tour tesla model x episode

Jeremy Clarkson reviews the Tesla Model X on The Grand Tour

As it turned out, he largely did. In the opening scenes of the review, Clarkson immediately applauded SUV’s looks and generous trunk and frunk space. He was also particularly impressed by the car’s capabilities, including the electric SUV’s massive 17-inch central touchscreen and the vehicle’s Summon feature.

True to his statement late last year , Clarkson did enjoy a number of the Model X’s more unique features, such as its Mars map and James Bond Easter Eggs. The veteran auto show host also took a particular liking to the car’s Autopilot software, which, according to the former Top Gear host, enabled him to do other things while the car was driving.

grand tour tesla model x episode

Perhaps what really brought a smile to Jeremy Clarkson’s face, however, was the performance of the Model X. Pitting the electric SUV against an Audi R8 in what appeared to be a quarter-mile race, the host was downright giddy as he raced ahead of the V10-powered, 600 hp, mid-engine sports car. While the Audi R8 was gaining on the Model X during the final moments of the race, Clarkson was impressed by the electric SUV’s acceleration nonetheless.

grand tour tesla model x episode

Summing up the car’s experience, Jeremy Clarkson was largely positive, stating that with the Model X, Tesla has created a vehicle that is unlike anything on the road .

“It’s serious and lighthearted. It’s sensible and daft. It doesn’t feel like anything else. It doesn’t go like anything else. It’s fabulous.”

Clarkson, however, did express some of his reservations about the electric car, such as the limitations of its range and the fact that its battery can catch fire. Overall, however, The Grand Tour host noted that if he has one huge complaint about the Model X, it would be its cost, which is simply far too much for a vehicle of its class.

Jeremy Clarkson and Tesla initially clashed ten years ago when the host, who was then working for BBC’s Top Gear, reviewed the original Tesla Roadster. During the segment, Top Gear alleged that the Roadster had run out of batteries and implied that it was an overall unreliable car. Clarkson, Hammond, and May were also largely skeptical with the electric car revolution, predicting that the trend would quickly die out.

If the latest episode of The Grand Tour is an indication, however, all Jeremy Clarkson needed was to get behind the wheel of Tesla’s big, hulking electric SUV to properly change his mind.

Jeremy Clarkson Reviewed The Tesla Model X With A Team Of Six Lawyers

Tesla has come a long way since it sued Top Gear over Jeremy Clarkson’s review of the Tesla Roadster in 2011. After swearing off Teslas for years, Clarkson gave in and decided to review the Model X for his new show The Grand Tour , but this time he decided to play it safe. Extra, extra safe.

Suggested Reading

The Roadster review in question aired in March 2008 (season 12, episode seven) and started off with the electric sports car smoking a regular Lotus Elise in a straight-line race. But it concluded with Top Gear claiming the car ran out of juice after just 55 miles, much shorter than Tesla’s claimed 200 mile range. Tesla filed a libel lawsuit in response.

Related Content

The judge determined that viewers would reasonably conclude that the range diminished in the harsh driving conditions of Clarkson’s track test and didn’t reflect real-world conditions, according to Wired in 2012 .

At the beginning of the Model X review segment in the latest episode of The Grand Tour , Clarkson explains how he swore off Teslas for life after the company’s lawsuit. But now, he says that the company had come so far he could no longer continue to ignore them.

The review starts off with him running through the Model X’s various gimmicks and features, like the graphics choices of the giant dashboard screen, the Autopilot functionality on the highway and the complimentary summon feature, the typical display of the van’s impressive performance with a drag race against a supercar (this time an Audi R8 V10) before ending on a display of the Model X’s “celebration mode” of flashing lights and swinging doors.

Then the review goes on to Clarkson’s drawbacks of the Model X, which the episode’s synopsis describes as “legally perilous.” To make sure Clarkson doesn’t dive into issues with libel law again, he’s forced to pack the six passenger seats of the Model X with The Grand Tour ’s legal team.

The lawyers check Clarkson on his claims that the Model X can’t reach its claimed range, his worries over the dangers of batteries catching fire , and force him to explicitly clarify his comments on the vehicle being too wide. Then he blocks them in the car to finish by saying the Model X is perhaps just a bit too expensive.

Staged? Sure, probably. But still a great bit.

Overall, though, Clarkson’s review of the Model X was positive, showing that the performance and intrigue of Tesla’s vehicles have improved in the eyes of one of the most bombastic reviewers... in the world, even if he still needs a legal team to keep an eye on him.

Clarkson’s glowing Model X review in latest Grand Tour episode signals end of Tesla feud

grand tour tesla model x episode

By Ben Griffin

12th February 2018

Jeremy Clarkson vowed never to drive a Tesla again after being sued for his controversial roadster review. But this week’s Grand Tour episode showed him blasting around in the Model X ─ and it seems the motoring journalist heavyweight was deeply impressed.

A decade ago Jeremy Clarkson made a review of the Tesla Roadster ─ the original car, not the forthcoming remake ─ that resulted in Tesla suing him for defamation for making the electric sports car look bad and fabricating a scene where it ran out of battery.

In fact, they sued twice (the second time with a revised case) and both instances were thrown out by the same judge.

After the ordeal, which Clarkson admitted caused sleepless nights, he vowed to never drive a Tesla again. In episode 10 of The Grand Tour , however, he points out that Tesla is about to surpass Volvo and therefore has become big enough car manufacturer for him to reconsider his stance.

And so The Grand Tour segment shows the ex- Top Gear host enjoying the Model X’s many secret features, including the ability to swap from the normal map view to Mars and the warp mode, which shows blurry stars like in Star Trek and other science fiction shows.

He also demonstrates the summon mode, which lets the Tesla drive to you on its own albeit over a short distance and in a straight line, and its ability to drive without any help on roads with white lines on either side using a feature known as Autopilot – a feature also available on the Model S saloon and smaller, cheaper Model 3 .

In his usual style, there was a heavy focus on performance. To show just how ludicrously fast the 2.5-tonne Model X is, he races it against a 600bhp Audi R8 V10 Plus Coupe and it wins very comfortably. But then it would when 0-60mph takes 2.9 seconds and it can do 45-65mph in 1.4 seconds.

The negatives are relatively few and far between, with the price of the P100D model being the main issue. Oddly, Clarkson quotes a total of £156,000 despite the fact it seems that, with every conceivable extra, the configurator maxes out at £144,050 excluding an £850 regulatory fee.

Jeremy Clarkson inside the Tesla Model X SUV on The Grand Tour show

You can, of course, buy the Model X 75kWh version that comes in at £73,600 before extras. But then the smaller capacity means 259 miles of range (NEDC) and 0-60mph takes an extra two seconds. It also tops out at 130mph, instead of the P100D’s 155mph.

Clarkson also mentions the Autopilot system can sometimes prove “discomforting”, which was his way of describing the fact it is anything but infallible. With that said, we also used the M4 motorway for testing and the Model S drove itself for more than 50 miles without any intervention from us.

Adding humour to the review (and to prevent further sleepless nights), Clarkson talks about the Tesla’s range with a group of lawyers in the car. He rightfully says that many different factors such as weather and driving style will reduce the range below the claimed 336 miles NEDC and that, at 2,271mm wide including the mirrors, some roads will be an issue.

Besides being an honest take on a car that, despite some quality issues and its substantial price, really is a pleasure to drive, you could see Clarkson was enthusiastic about it. A far cry, then, from when he tore apart Tesla’s first offering.

In our Tesla Model X review we admitted you could buy something as practical for less money, but concluded that: “You would struggle to find an alternative that gets as much attention (let alone a family wagon) and one that can reduce your annual fuel bill as substantially and make the school run as un-polluting. All while having up to seven seats and the straight-line performance of a McLaren P1.”

You can watch The Grand Tour on Prime Video, which costs around £8 or £79 a year (and that includes access to speedy Prime deliveries). The first few episodes missed the mark, but the show has since almost returned to former Top Gear top glory so we would urge you to check it out.

And, of course, tune into the BBC’s actual Top Gear , which returns on the 25th of February, to see former Recombu editor-in-chief, Rory Reid.

Leave it to Jeremy Clarkson to cheat by bringing a Ford Raptor to a race

The Grand Tour Season 2 streams on  Amazon Video

The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 10:  Oh, Canada

Episode Rating: Three of Five 'Speed' Boats

(Spoilers, obviously)

The episode begins with the question of what medium SUV would be the three presenters' choice if they absolutely had to buy one. Even with how popular they are, Jeremy Clarkson just doesn't get the appeal, saying that his Alfa Romeo Stelvio is worse in every way than the sedan it is based off of.

They met in Canada at a racetrack with their three choices of medium SUV. Clarkson in the Stelvio joined by Hammond in a Porsche Macan and James May in a Range Rover Velar.

They test the "Sport" in SUV by trying to match a BMW M3's lap time. After proving that proximity keys are the worst by losing one and bricking the BMW on the track, the three SUV's were tested. The Alfa was 6 seconds faster than the second place Porsche, but was still around 20 seconds slower than the M3.

Next up was testing the "Utility" portion by seeing how many dogs could fit in the back. The total ended up being zero for all three cars since the electronic tailgates wouldn't close.

So now, all that was left was to try to be a better "vehicle" than a horse. The three complete a barrel race after a horse and rider set the benchmark time. The Porsche's AWD couldn't handle the dirt and went into limp mode. The Range Rover got lost in its own dust, thanks to its driver. The Alfa has a useless electric handbrake and then went into limp mode with the same AWD issues as the Porsche. All three were much slower than the horse.

Conversation Street

A very good analogy was made about the proliferation of SUVs. When faced with a larger vehicle on the road, drivers tend to assume the larger vehicle is always safer. In this way, SUVs came to be like Nukes. If others on the road have them, you'd better get one too. It becomes a safety arms race until everyone is driving around in SUVs.

Tesla Model X Review

Back when Top Gear reviewed the original Tesla Roadster, Tesla sued Clarkson. This is why Jeremy won't touch them anymore. However, with Tesla gaining popularity, Jeremy wanted to give them another shot. Hoping that the Model X would be an SUV someone might actually want, he took a look.

Right off the bat, Jeremy enjoys the Easter eggs, autopilot and the 'summon mode.' It is quiet to drive, handles well for its weight, and can embarrass an Audi R8 in a drag race. It even matched a 5.0 Ford Mustang around their test track.

On the negative side, well, we aren't sure. Because the team of lawyers that Jeremy crammed in the Model X with him kept making sure he didn't step on Tesla's toes with overly critical opinions.

Celebrity F-Off

This episode, they aim to find out who is the fastest golfing enthusiast, so they have on Rory McIlroy and Paris Hilton. While the golf connection is a bit of a stretch, both have impressive car collections. The collections seem to be more about spending money than an actual enthusiasm for cars. For example, Paris Hilton has a Lexus LFA that she likes because of the attention it brings.

Luckily for McIlroy, he put in a better time than Paris Hilton by 4 seconds, though she was not as bad behind the wheel as one might suspect from her LFA story.

SUV Showdown

To use their SUV's like normal people would, instead of at the track or rodeo, the three are told to tow boats with their SUVs to the finish line near a lake. Jeremy however, now has a Ford Raptor. That is because his Alfa can't tow anything, because a trailer hitch can't be installed because of the way the exhaust is routed. It is basically an automotive orienteering race while towing boats.

As the Raptor climbs and the Porsche's awd began to fail, May finally decides to set off. Immediately, Jeremy is smitten with his Raptor's abilities and he makes it to the lake. Meanwhile, May's Range Rover is too civilized to handle going off road. Hammond's Porsche can't quite do what the Raptor can, so he is forced to find another way around a lake to the finish line. He finds a longer, but smoother and faster route.

Since the instructions said nothing about bringing the car, May decided to take his boat across the lake. May by water, Clarkson by brute force, and Hammond by speed all close in on the finish line, with Clarkson winning out.

However, his boat is gone, not to mention he isn't in his original SUV. And May's boat is sinking out from under him as he tries to make it to shore. Hammond gets the win here if we were in charge.

Impressions

The presenters, and car enthusiasts in general, have made their issues with SUV's well known, but the show still found a way to make it interesting. Seeing Jeremy review the Tesla Model X with a cadre of Lawyers was a good way of pointing out the absurdity of suing a beloved car reviewer, as they will usually have the last laugh. Paris Hilton and Rory McIlroy added nothing to the episode, which really dragged down the overall rating of the episode.

Model X

The all electric Tesla Model X was reviewed by Clarkson in Oh, Canada . The P1000D model will achieve 0-60 in 3.1 seconds and top out at 140mph.

The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond Has Sold His Tesla Model X

In a recent video for DriveTribe , Richard Hammond takes to his local country roads in a famous star of his original Top Gear . His Opel Kadett, lovingly named Oliver , became incredibly popular when it was saved from ruin during the Top Gear Botswana Special episode. And while Jeremy Clarkson and James May took great pleasure in teasing him about his relationship with the car, he still has it and adores it just as much today as he did back then.

During the video, in which he talks about Oliver and the potential modifications he’s considering for the car, he also tells us that he’s sold a number of his other cars to “prop up” his car restoration business,  The Smallest Cog . This includes his Tesla Model X, which he greatly enjoyed.

grand tour tesla model x episode

“I sold my Tesla Model X recently to prop up the restoration business.

“And I regretted it in some ways because I love the car and it was doing my bit, and for daily work I was not using up precious fuel that I’d rather use in my Mustang.”

He continues to talk about precious little Oliver, who he names a “green option” thanks to its dainty little 800cc engine that barely produces 40 horsepower, the fact it’s so old – almost 60 years – and takes very little work to maintain.

“This is actually a green car. Incredibly green.

‘Oliver, you’re the future, mate,” he says looking at the classic steering wheel.

grand tour tesla model x episode

Oliver’s restoration was rushed when it first entered the UK, and after a hint of damage after someone reversed the car into a tree damaging the door, it’s safe to say it needs a bit of a look at. Fortunately, Richard owns a car restoration company, and he has revealed in this video that he wants to restore the car himself, starting with a paint job identical to that which he bought the car with.

We’re incredibly excited to see what happens with Oliver and will be following their journey into 2022.

Grand Tour Review of Tesla Model X

  • Add to quote

I just watched the review of the Model X on The Grand Tour. It was actually much better than i expected for a Electric Car from Clarkson! He did make sure he was accompanied by Solicitors for part of the episode which was quite entertaining. The only thing he really criticised was the price. What did everyone else think?

grand tour tesla model x episode

His criticism of the price was dodgy as he claimed it cost £155k. No mention of it actually starting much cheaper.

grand tour tesla model x episode

Didn't Clarkson spend more than that on a Ford GT - even though the model X is faster (in acceleration)?

I thought is was very good too, and amusing with the lawyers. He did genuinely seem to enjoy it, and didn’t once even allude to battery usage, or track limitations etc etc which would normally be the reposte of a petrol head. I did wonder if the lack of any battery negativity was a silent acknowledgment of the shenanigans with the Roadster, but that may be giving him too much credit for subtlety.

I thought at the end the lawyers were going to escape by showing the rear doors would open in that tight space but no... missed a trick there.

I recall them royally taking the piss out of his gt40 and it’s 8mpg or whatever. Unless you are travelling at a steady 55 on flat ground most cars will struggle with it, however a bloke in the US did manage to get is Model S to turn in 500 miles, average speed of something like 28mph...

Model X Review : The Grand Tour

grand tour tesla model x episode

This X review from Clarkson is much better than Chris Harris video of the S P100D on Top Gear youtube channel. Harris try to compare the P100D to manual, noisy ICE cars for driving engagement, Harris completely missed the point of electric cars. A few points of negative Clarkson did mention was true, but he failed to mention it is also true of ICE cars: cold weather range, unreliable manufacturer claimed range, car catching fire and price of top-of-the-range models. Speaking of price, Model X sells from £75k upto £155k. Mercedes G class sells from £90k and G63 starts from £135k without options. Only negative I consider true for me is the width of the car. But then, if Ford bought F150 to UK without any change, it would be even wider.

grand tour tesla model x episode

G-wagen is an epic turdstack with absolutely no redeeming features other than Bliiiiiiing in Kensington. Ok, so it can work off-road like a Defender, but not while wearing 22" spinners....

I used to love my G, mind you that was way before it became trendy

grand tour tesla model x episode

Was it true about the Model X not being allowed over Albert Bridge ? And , if so , presumably a lot of other width restricted roads.

Just a width restriction I think. The weight limit of 2.5 tonnes was lifted for non-goods vehicles a while back, apparently. Either way it may be tricky.

Electric cars of US automaker Tesla stand outside the Hangelsberg community center

Here’s What the Grand Tour Thinks of the Tesla Model X

Tesla is unlike any other car manufacturer we’ve known. The brand has not only created a niche all to itself by producing solely electric vehicles , but it has also created a reputation that makes other people stop and stare when they drive by. Bordering between luxury and futuristic, people seem to really admire the Tesla brand, and Elon Musk goes above and beyond to enhance brand loyalty and the user experience through fun features and publicity stunts, like sending a Tesla Roadster into space (by the way, what ever happened to that? ). With so much prestige, it only makes sense that a show like the Grand Tour would eventually make its way to review a popular car from the brand, the Model X .

The Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X is the SUV that puts all of the rest of the family vehicles to shame. It’s simple yet futuristic, luxurious yet modest, and it isn’t as absurdly priced as some of the higher-end SUVs that offer less than the Model X does. Throughout the video, Jeremy Clarkson, host of The Grand Tour , shows off some of the unique features and capabilities of the spaceship-like vehicle in his usual comical tone.

An image of a Tesla Model X parked outdoors.

What the Grand Tour had to say

From the very start of the video, you can tell that Jeremy Clarkson, one of the stars of the Grand Tour, has pretty high expectations of the Tesla Model X. In fact, they make a point to mention what we all know in the back of our minds is true — Tesla represents a new generation for cars, and enhances what we will come to expect from other car manufacturers. What makes it even better is that they aren’t outrageously expensive , especially compared to SUVs that offer the same or even fewer features.

“This doesn’t look like a normal family SUV…it looks better” Jeremy Clarkson

Of course, we couldn’t escape without hearing about some of the fun features that the Tesla Model X has, like the sketchpad feature. The video doesn’t dwell much on these features. Instead, it moves on to an overview of the car, with Jeremy Clarkson going on to claim that it’s the most relaxing car he’s ever driven — a meaningful statement from a man that has driven so many popular and rare vehicles.

A view of the world's largest Tesla supercharger station with 72 stalls at the Jing'an International Center

It’s worth a watch

YouTube provides us with a short, just longer than 10-minute long clip that borders a full-on Tesla commercial. Perhaps Jeremy Clarkson is just so excited about the vehicle that it’s contagious, but it’s definitely hard to argue against all of the cool things that the car does, like how it will drive to you if you don’t want to walk over to it. The brand isn’t known for having the highest reliability ratings around, but consumers seem to be in agreement that with everything the Tesla Model X has to offer, they don’t really care.

We aren’t particularly surprised that the show had some many positive things to say about the Tesla Model X — it is a pretty cool car, after all.

The Grand Tour's Jeremy Clarkson forced to review new Tesla car with a team of lawyers on board

It was never going to be easy.

preview for The Grand Tour's Jeremy Clarkson forced to review new Tesla car with a team of lawyers on board

Indeed it seems that producers were so worried about Jeremy stepping out of turn while checking out the Tesla Model X, that they hired a team of lawyers to sit in the car with him.

In a clip posted to The Grand Tour 's official Facebook page , the presenter can be seen driving the vehicle, accompanied by six sharp suited and defamation-savvy lawyers.

And it's a good thing they were there too, since – as you can probably imagine – there were a lot of hypothetical fires that needed putting out.

The first item up on the bill for discussion was the manufacturer's claim that the Model X can travel up to 351 miles between charges, with Jeremy all set to launch into a speech about his own experience with electric cars.

Swiftly, one lawyer interjected: "So that we're clear, we completely accept that this car can do 351 miles between charges, don't we?"

"Suggesting a claim on manufacturing is untrue is not where we're going to go today, is it?" said another.

Clarkson's next topic of discussion referred to the Rimac electric car Richard Hammond was driving during his crash last year , and how the Model X uses the "same sort of batteries".

"If you crash an electrical car and it has lithium-ion batteries, it could catch fire," he said. "And often, the fire brigade will turn up and they've only got water on board, so as you're sitting there, on fire, you're then being electrocuted."

Yep. We told you he needed the lawyers. Even those poor guys in the backseat.

"Well, I think we should make it clear that we're not suggesting that these cars have any inherent defect," said a lawyer in the back.

"Look what happened with Samsung and their batteries," Jeremy added.

"We're not going to start defaming Samsung, are we?" added the lawyer.

The Grand Tour airs on Amazon Prime.

Jeremy Clarkson once dissed Tesla on Top Gear, has he finally come around? [Video]

In 2012, BBC's TV show, Top Gear, became the most widely watched TV program in the world. Part of the reason for the show's wild success was it's outspoken, controversial co-host, Jeremy Clarkson. However, the controversy came to a head in 2015 when he was fired from Top Gear. Over the course of Clarkson's career, one of his most publicized, albeit ill-conceived, targets was Tesla.

Clarkson has since reunited with the old Top Gear gang for The Grand Tour, a new show on Amazon. And  RadioTimes reports, " Tesla will appear in the second series of The Grand Tour, almost ten years after Jeremy Clarkson’s infamous Top Gear Tesla car review that resulted in a three-year legal battle. Tesla attempted to sue the BBC show for libel following Clarkson’s Top Gear film on the Tesla Roadster in 2008." Although Tesla didn't win the lawsuit, the Roadster's problems portrayed in Top Gear's segment were fabricated/scripted into a skit as "entertainment" even though it didn't reflect reality.

In any event, regardless of the bad blood with Tesla, "Clarkson has revealed that his Amazon series will feature a new Tesla car, with The Grand Tour presenter saying it was time to 'revisit' what the company has been getting up to." Clarkson explained, “We have got a Tesla in this series, the first one for a long time. We got it by ‘other means’. We didn’t borrow it from Tesla.” This week, Mashable released a short teaser from Clarkson, see below.

Above: Jeremy Clarkson could be rethinking Tesla (Youtube: Mashable Daily )

Referring to Tesla's lawsuit, Clarkson said, “You know they sued and lost, then appealed and lost that again? The courts found in our favour. I did a very fair and honest – cruel, but honest – report on how terrible that first Tesla was. Since then they’ve changed a lot, so we thought it was time to revisit and see where they are now. And in many ways it’s extremely impressive that new Tesla.”

What is Elon Musk's take on Jeremy Clarkson? In 2013, he told the BBC that Tesla was, "... in the worst possible position for someone like Clarkson. Clarkson’s [Top Gear] show is much more about entertainment than it is about truth... I think most people realise that but not everyone. I’ve actually enjoyed a lot of his shows. It’s not as though I just hate Top Gear or anything. He can be very funny and irreverent. But he does have a strong bias against electric cars. His two pet peeves are American cars and electric cars, and we’re an American electric car. We’re in the worst possible situation for someone like Clarkson.”

Now, it appears Clarkson may (finally) be reconsidering his views on Tesla. Top Gear certainly has — the show has since featured the Tesla Model X. Did Top Gear have a different opinion on Tesla after  Clarkson's departure ? One of the new hosts, Rory Reid, went so far as to  proclaim that the Tesla Model X is, "an electric car that might just do to petrol and diesel what the Ford Model T did to the horse."
