Chrysler voyager and grand voyager mk4 review (2001-2008), top notch mpv, but reliability can be a major issue.

grand voyager 2004

What is the Chrysler Voyager?

The fourth-generation Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager were among the best looking and most capacious people-carriers on the market when they were new. They were also among the most capable as they were comfy, well-appointed and seriously user-friendly. But being US-built Chryslers they were also a bit lacking in the materials and build quality department, which is why you have to be wary when buying a used example – especially as even the newest cars are now getting on.

grand voyager 2004

The difference between the Voyager and Grand Voyager is simple: the former is around a foot shorter than the latter, which means it has significantly less interior space. As a result, the only models worth looking at are the Grand editions; yes you’ll need a huge parking space but if you want to carry seven people, you might as well allow them to travel in comfort.

Search for and buy a used Chrysler Voyager

On paper the Grand Voyager had lots of rivals, but in reality there’s just the one – the box-on wheels Hyundai i800. Apart from this unsophisticated people mover the Chrysler was the only MPV that could seat seven and still have a decent sized boot; alternatives such as the Ford Galaxy, Renault Grand Espace and Citroen C8/Peugeot 807 offered no goods ‘n’ chattels space with all the seats filled. The Kia Sedona is worth a look, though being boxy, capacious and reliable. However, it feels rather downmarket, even in comparison with the Chrysler. Or you could look for a VW Transporter; the quality is excellent, but used values tend to be steep.

The fourth-generation Voyager and Grand Voyager made their debuts in February 2001. While the Voyager was offered with 2.4 or 3.3-litre petrol engines along with a 2.5-litre diesel, the Grand Voyager came with just the latter two powerplants. In April 2004 a facelift brought new headlights and more generous equipment levels while both models were also now available with a new 2.8-litre CRD diesel engine. The most useful addition came in April 2005 with the introduction of a Stow ‘n’ Go option, which allowed the seats to fold flat into the floor.

You should aim to buy a facelifted range-topping Limited or run-out Limited XS with the 2.8-litre CRD engine. Such cars are packed with kit and while that’s more to go wrong (and it probably will do so), you’ll have a few more buttons to play with while you’re waiting for the tow truck to arrive. Whatever you buy, make sure it’s got Stow & Go; it makes life a lot easier as without these you have to lift the chairs out individually. And unless you’re a gym worshipper you’ll struggle, because the chairs are seriously heavy.

When it was new the Grand Voyager was popular with celebrities thanks to its spaciousness, clean lines and the fitment of (in many cases) smart-looking privacy glass. While this fourth-generation model isn’t the best MPV to drive, it offers a huge amount of practicality and versatility for the money, and while running costs can be high, if you buy sensibly you can minimise expenditure. But investigate the cost of fixing even the most minor of faults before you buy; steep parts prices can bump up repair bills higher than you might think.

What to look out for when buying a used Chrysler Voyager

Chrysler doesn’t have a great record when it comes to reliability, thanks to under-engineering of some key components. Things like suspension bushes, track rod ends and wheelbearings can wear quickly, while the electrics aren’t very robust. Other items that go on the blink regularly include the heating and ventilation systems along with the electrically powered rear side doors. You also need to check that the components on the car’s underside aren’t rotten; the bodyshell doesn’t generally rust, but the bits that attach to its underside often do.

For such an old car, its recall record isn’t too lengthy; potential issues have been a power steering hose splitting, the handbrake failing and the windscreen wipers packing in, with later recalls for braking problems and incorrect deployment of airbags.

Which Years Of Used Chrysler Voyagers Are Most Reliable?

Black Chrysler Voyager

Chrysler Voyager by Rudolf Stricker - CC-BY-SA-4.0

The popularity of minivans had indeed declined compared to their peak in the early 2000s. This change in consumer preference is primarily due to the rise of SUVs and crossover vehicles, which became popular due to their versatility, off-road capability, and stylish design. That said, minivans still hold a significant market niche and are popular among certain buyers, particularly families.

When it comes to minivans, the most popular options include the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Chrysler Pacifica. However, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly minivan, you should probably check out the Chrysler Voyager.

First launched in 1988, the Voyager has seen several redesigns, each time adapting to new trends and technologies. Basically, Chrysler took the lowest trim of the Pacifica and converted it into the Voyager from an old Plymouth model.

THE CHRYSLER VOYAGER YEARS TO AVOID

To prevent wasting time and money on your next car, avoid purchasing Voyager years with extensive issues. Read on to learn more about the Chrysler Voyager years to avoid , the worst overall year, and other critical information.

If you’re searching for the most reliable Chrysler Voyager year, you’ve come to the right place. For today’s buyers’ guide, we look at recent Voyager models to determine the most reliable years and models to avoid.

2000-2003 Chrysler Voyager

With the 2000 model, all Plymouth Voyagers became Chrysler as the former brand was phased out. Then, the 2001 model year marked a significant redesign for the aging minivan.

Avoid: 2000 Chrysler Voyager

The 2000 Chrysler Voyager is harder for us to recommend due to its age and known reliability issues. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2000 Voyager recorded 171 complaints and eight recalls. One of the main reasons why you should avoid this model year is the problematic transmission.

A frustrated owner claimed their van produced a whistling sound after the warranty of 30,000 miles ran out at 40,000 miles. Eventually, the transmission just failed to shift. Even though the dealership fixed it, the transmission acted up again at 103,000 miles. Replacing or rebuilding the transmission may cost you thousands.

You don’t want to buy a car - you want to get the best deal on the car you’re looking for. The CoPilot app will notify you if there’s a similar vehicle in your area at a better price, so you’re always certain you got the best deal available.

Avoid: 2001 Chrysler Voyager

Although the 2001 Chrysler Voyager was more reliable than last year, this redesigned minivan had numerous complaints and issues. Some commonly reported issues include transmission problems and engine issues.

As for the transmission problem, many owners have complained about experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Shifting Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the transmission not shifting properly, or refusing to shift into certain gears. This can cause the vehicle to feel sluggish or unresponsive.
  • Premature Transmission Failure: In some cases, owners have reported complete transmission failure at relatively low mileage.
  • Transmission Leaks: Some Chrysler vehicles, including the Voyager, have been reported to develop leaks in the transmission, which can cause the transmission fluid to drop to unsafe levels and cause damage.
  • ‘Limp Mode’ Issues: Some vehicles may go into “limp mode,” a safety feature designed to protect the engine and transmission from further damage by limiting the vehicle’s speed.

At CoPilot, except for a few exceptions, we always recommend avoiding the first production or redesign years of any car because of potential issues not caught during testing – the 2001 Voyager is no exception.

THE BEST USED SUVS UNDER $10,000

We looked into price, reliability, features, and more to create this list of the best used SUVs under $10k on the market today. Take a look - some of the best used SUVs have gone mostly overlooked or forgotten.

Buy: 2003 Chrysler Voyager

For the first lineup of the minivan, the most reliable Chrysler Voyager year is the 2003 iteration. For starters, it doesn’t have too many complaints, and the few ones that are there are mostly minor issues. Most complaints filed via the NHTSA were about the Voyager’s electrical system .

A complainant reported that while cruising at 50 mph, the lights inexplicably began to flash on and off, and ultimately turned off completely. This issue first occurred when the car had approximately 30,000 miles on the odometer, and according to the complainant, it has progressively worsened since its onset.

Regardless, such reports are infrequent and primarily consist of minor issues.

2020-2022 Chrysler Voyager

In 2020, Chrysler brought back the voyager after a long hiatus. This time, the Chrysler Voyager was slotted below its more popular sibling, the Pacifica, and marketed as the lower-cost offering.

Buy: 2020 Chrysler Voyager

The return of the Voyager was met with positive reception from customers and critics alike. CarandDriver gave the 2020 Voyager a respectable rating of 8.5 out of 10, citing affordable pricing and good fuel economy as the minivan’s strengths.

Under the hood, the 2020 Voyager was identical to the Pacifica, housing a 3.6-liter V6 engine that delivers 287 horsepower and offers a good balance of power and efficiency. Like other minivans, the Voyager provides plenty of room for passengers and cargo. It can seat up to seven passengers and features Chrysler’s innovative Stow ‘n Go seating for added cargo flexibility.

As a relatively newer model, there’s little data about the Voyager’s reliability. As such, there are little to no complaints regarding this model year. Safety-wise, the 2020 Voyager had an impressive performance in NHTSA’s various crashworthiness tests and earned a 5-star overall safety rating . The 2020 Voyager includes a rearview camera as a standard feature, with available advanced safety features like rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

THE BEST USED LUXURY CARS ON THE MARKET

Buying a used or CPO luxury car is one of the smartest buys you can make - you can get a lot of car for not much money. You can pick up a three-year-old luxury car for about half of what you’d pay new. Check out this list of the best used luxury cars on the market to find the best deals.

Buy: 2021 Chrysler Voyager

This year marked the discontinuation of the Grand Dodge Caravan, which means your budget minivan option has shrunken down to one: the Chrysler Voyager. The 2021 Chrysler Voyager had generally favorable reviews, particularly for its affordability and practicality as a minivan.

The 2021 Chrysler Voyager was powered by the same 3.6-liter V6 engine that delivers 287 horsepower. This gives the Voyager minivan a 0-60 mph acceleration in 7.3 seconds – pretty good for a family-oriented vehicle.

Regarding safety, the 2021 Voyager comes equipped with a basic set of standard safety features. However, the most advanced safety features are only optional add-ons, whereas many competitors offer these as standard. Despite this, the 2021 model has been awarded a 5-star rating from the NHTSA and has generally received positive evaluations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

On the downside, as of 2023, the Voyager lacked comprehensive reliability data and has not been rated by organizations like J.D. Power or Consumer Reports. Nonetheless, the minivan has registered very few complaints and has only been subject to a single recall. This is a good sign for the vehicle’s quality and potential long-term reliability.

Deviant behavior of Grand Duke Constantine Pavlovich as the trigger of his success and failure (on materials of Russian and Polish literatures)

Maya kucherskaya , higher school of economics, moscow.

In my paper I am going to study the image of Grand Duke Constantine Pavlovich (1779-1831) as represented in Russian and Polish literature. Constantine Pavlovich Romanov, the brother of two Russian Emperors - Alexander I and Nicolas I – was mainly known for his abdication from the throne in 1825, which led to the Decembrist rebellion later that year. Though best-known, this action was by no means the only example of what we call the “deviant behavior” of the Grand Duke. In fact, his entire life represents a pattern of actions that overthrew the norms of conventional behavior on many levels. As a member of the royal family, he broke the expected standards by divorcing his spouse Grand Duchess Anna Fiodorovna to enter a morganatic marriage with Duchess Ioanna Grudzinska. As a member of the royal court, he entertained himself by playing enfant terrible and using obscene vocabulary during high-level diplomatic meetings and royal balls. As a military commander in Russia and Poland, he insulted and mistreated his officers and beat his soldiers (Karnovich, 1995; Masson, 1996).

Such behavior became the object of active cultural reflection both in Russia and Poland. Surprisingly, the very same type of his deviant behavior met with totally different responses in the Russian and Polish literatures respectively. Russians, especially common people, viewed his behavior as a challenge to the entire royal family and, therefore, as a sign of bravery and gallantry. This gave rise to numerous folk songs and tales about his generosity to the poor, especially to peasants and soldiers, who cherished hopes of getting freedom and money from him when he is hoisted to the throne (Russkaia istoricheskaia pesnia, 1987; Chernov, 1960). However, when Constantine was Commander-in-chief of the Polish army (1815-1830), his way of treating (or, rather, mistreating) his inferiors, received a totally opposite reaction. In Poland, he was viewed as a tyrant and, therefore, hated by the military people and civilians likewise. In Polish literature Constantine is represented as a cruel and despotic person (Slowackii Ju., 1960, Wyspianskii S, 1963).

This striking difference in reactions and, therefore, images of the same person in Russian and Polish societies can be explained by differences in the political histories of the two countries. Russia had always been an absolute monarchy with the Tsar as “the father to all people, to whom people looked up almost as they did to God. Poland, by contrast, represented a considerably more democratic parliamentary tradition, which naturally excluded this type of attitude and required its King to abide by the constitutional law, just as any other citizen.

This paper is based on the study of folk songs and tales, plays, memoirs, diaries, reports of the secret police, many of which have never been published and have been researched by the author in the Russian libraries and archives.

However, due to the unstable environment of the Golden Horde, and the deft leadership of Ivan I at a critical time during the 13th century, Moscow became a safe haven of prosperity during his reign. It also became the new seat of power of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ivan I (also known as Ivan Kalita) was born around 1288 to the Prince of Moscow, Daniil Aleksandrovich. He was born during a time of devastation and upheaval in Rus’. Kiev had been overtaken by the invading Mongol forces in 1240, and most of the Rus’ principalities had been absorbed into the Golden Horde of the Mongol Empire by the time Ivan was born. He ascended to the seat of Prince of Moscow after the death of his father, and then the death of his older brother Yury.

Ivan I. He was born around 1288 and died in either 1340 or 1341, still holding the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir.

Ivan I stepped into a role that had already been expanded by his predecessors. Both his older brother and his father had captured nearby lands, including Kolomna and Mozhaisk. Yury had also made a successful alliance with the Mongol leader Uzbeg Khan and married his sister, securing more power and advantages within the hierarchy of the Golden Horde.

Ivan I continued the family tradition and petitioned the leaders of the Golden Horde to gain the seat of Grand Prince of Vladimir. His other three rivals, all princes of Tver, had previously been granted the title in prior years. However they were all subsequently deprived of the title and all three aspiring princes also eventually ended up murdered. Ivan I, on the other hand, garnered the title from Khan Muhammad Ozbeg in 1328. This new title, which he kept until his death around 1340, meant he could collect taxes from the Russian lands as a ruling prince and position his tiny city as a major player in the Vladimir region.

Moscow’s Rise

During this time of upheaval, the tiny outpost of Moscow had multiple advantages that repositioned this town and set it up for future prosperity under Ivan I. Three major contributing factors helped Ivan I relocate power to this area:

  • It was situated in between other major principalities on the east and west so it was often protected from the more devastating invasions.
  • This relative safety, compared to Tver and Ryazan, for example, started to bring in tax-paying citizens who wanted a safe place to build a home and earn a livelihood.
  • Finally, Moscow was set up perfectly along the trade route from Novgorod to the Volga River, giving it an economic advantage from the start.

Ivan I also spurred on the growth of Moscow by actively recruiting people to move to the region. In addition, he bought the freedom of people who had been captured by the extensive Mongol raids. These recruits further bolstered the population of Moscow. Finally, he focused his attention on establishing peace and routing out thieves and raiding parties in the region, making for a safe and calm metaphorical island in a storm of unsettled political and military upsets.

Kievan Rus’ 1220-1240. This map illustrates the power dynamics at play during the 13th century shortly before Ivan I was born. Sarai, the capital of the Golden Horde, sat to the southeast, while Moscow (not visible on this map) was tucked up in the northern forests of Vladimir-Suzdal.

Ivan I knew that the peace of his region depended upon keeping up an alliance with the Golden Horde, which he did faithfully. Moscow’s increased wealth during this era also allowed him to loan money to neighboring principalities. These regions then became indebted to Moscow, bolstering its political and financial position.

In addition, a few neighboring cities and villages were subsumed into Moscow during the 1320s and 1330s, including Uglich, Belozero, and Galich. These shifts slowly transformed the tiny trading outpost into a bustling city center in the northern forests of what was once Kievan Rus’.

Russian Orthodox Church and The Center of Moscow

Ivan I committed some of Moscow’s new wealth to building a splendid city center and creating an iconic religious setting. He built stone churches in the center of Moscow with his newly gained wealth. Ivan I also tempted one of the most important religious leaders in Rus’, the Orthodox Metropolitan Peter, to the city of Moscow. Before the rule of the Golden Horde the original Russian Orthodox Church was based in Kiev. After years of devastation, Metropolitan Peter transferred the seat of power to Moscow where a new Renaissance of culture was blossoming. This perfectly timed transformation of Moscow coincided with the decades of devastation in Kiev, effectively transferring power to the north once again.

One of the most lasting accomplishments of Ivan I was to petition the Khan based in Sarai to designate his son, who would become Simeon the Proud, as the heir to the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir. This agreement a line of succession that meant the ruling head of Moscow would almost always hold power over the principality of Vladimir, ensuring Moscow held a powerful position for decades to come.
