Superb Experience - Return to the Glory Days!
Had a superb experience at the property with my 10 year old son. Everything from the food, to service, extras and the rooms was exceptional. I have been visiting the property for more than 30 years and can firmly say that under the leadership of Veronique Delattre, the standards echo those of a bygone era and do justice to this magnificent property and the legacy that it carries.
We enjoyed the food, hospitality and the rooms

8 of the Best Luxury Safari Lodges in Kenya
Along with Tanzania , Kenya is the archetypal African safari destination. It is synonymous with the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, and home to iconic parks like the Maasai Mara National Reserve as well as a slew of private conservancies. For those in search of a truly memorable safari experience, Kenya also offers some of the most luxurious lodges on the continent. In this article, we take a look at a few of our favorites; ranging from classic tented camps to unique private villas.
Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp
Michael Poliza / Getty Images
Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp is located far from the crowds in the southeast corner of the Maasai Mara, near the Tanzanian border. Set in a stunning 6,000-acre private conservancy, the camp consists of just 10 luxury tents decorated in a nostalgic 1920s style that recreates the safari golden age. Each white canvas tent comes with an en-suite bathroom, while family rooms include a living room complete with a fireplace. Meet your fellow travelers for dinner and drinks in the communal mess tents; or seek post-game drive relaxation at the swimming pool and spa. Game drives, night drives, and walking safaris all take place in an area known for its abundant wildlife.
Tortilis Safari Camp
Tortilis Camp
Surrounded by acacia woodland, Tortilis Safari Camp is blessed with some of the best Kilimanjaro views in the business. Here, you can enjoy game drives, walking safaris and sundowners both in Amboseli National Park itself or in the camp's 30,000-acre private concession. There are 17 luxuriously furnished Makuti tents, that all come with one main bedroom, en-suite bathroom, and private verandah. For a little extra luxury, book a stay in the camp's exclusive safari house. An on-site garden provides fresh produce for delicious meals served in the main lodge, which in turn overlooks a waterhole frequented by elephants. Other highlights include a swimming pool and spa service.
Mara Bushtops
Orion Hotels
Located less than five kilometers from the main gate into the Maasai Mara National Park, Mara Bushtops is a luxury tented camp set high on a hill within a private conservancy. Scenic valley views are a feature of the lodge's 12 5-star tents, as are private decks and hot tubs. The lounge and dining area includes a fine wine cellar, bar, and library; while the infinity pool doubles as an elevated game-viewing spot. Maasai guides accompany all game drives and walking safaris, and breakfasts can be enjoyed in the bush. When you want a change of scene, book a visit to a local school or Maasai village. Mara Bushtops is also renowned for its full-service Amani Spa.
Campi ya Kanzi
Campi ya Kanzi is a unique camp built at the foot of the Chyulu Hills in southern Kenya, on communal land owned by the Maasai. Both socially and ecologically responsible, the lodge features six tented cottages and two suites, each with breathtaking views and a personal Maasai butler. If you're traveling as a group, consider booking the private Kanzi House. Meals are accompanied by spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro or enjoyed beneath a canopy of stars. On your safari, you will benefit from the knowledge of a native Maasai tracker. Special Campi ya Kanzi experiences include walking safaris into the Chyulu Hills cloud forest, horse riding and scenic Kilimanjaro flights.
Sasaab Lodge
Sasaab Lodge is located on Samburu communal lands in northern Kenya, near the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Perched above the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, it offers magical views across the Laikipia Plateau towards Mount Kenya; and nine luxurious, Moroccan-themed tents. All are very secluded and come with an open-air bathroom and private plunge pools. The communal area is perched upon a rocky ridge with incredible views of the river below. Samburu guides will take you on a walking safari, camel safari or traditional 4x4 game drive. Keep an eye out for regional specials including the gerenuk antelope, the Grévy's zebra, and the reticulated giraffe.
Ol Donyo Lodge
Nestled at the foot of the Chyulu Hills, the Ol Donyo Lodge is located in between Amboseli and Tsavo East National Parks. Its uniquely decorated guest suites and villas boast private plunge pools and dramatic views that stretch all the way to distant Mount Kilimanjaro. Each one also has a rooftop star bed accessed via a winding stone staircase. There's an infinity pool, a massage service and an elegant dining area with an impressive wine list. Spend your days exploring the lodge's stunning surroundings on a game drive, horseback safari or guided bush walk; or immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a Maasai village. Fly-camping can also be arranged.
Loisaba Tented Camp
Escarpment views and chic Africana furniture are defining features of Loisaba Tented Camp . Located in a private conservancy on the edge of the Laikipia Plateau, the camp offers six tent suites and three family suites, all with polished wood floors, private verandahs, and rainfall showers. When you're not in your room or out on safari, spend time socializing at the infinity pool or in the open lounge and bar. Activities range from visits to Samburu villages to horse riding, camel trekking, and fishing. You can even visit the sniffer dogs used by the conservancy's anti-poaching patrol. For a truly unforgettable stay, book a night in one of the Loisaba star beds , owned by the same company.
Lewa Safari Camp
Lewa Safari Camp
Famous as the place where Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge stayed ahead of their Kenyan engagement in 2010, Lewa Safari Camp has access to 65,000 acres of private game viewing. Each luxury safari tent has its own verandah and en-suite bathroom, while the camp's communal areas include a sparkling swimming pool and a sitting room with an open log fire. Gourmet meals include afternoon tea and evening canapés. Whether you choose to join a game drive, a guided walk or explore on horseback, keep an eye out for Lewa's black and white rhinos. The conservancy also boasts the world's largest concentration of endangered Grévy's zebras.

As newbie safari travellers, we were blown away by our experience of the Conservatory - the animals in abundance; the landscapes; the people; the smells and sounds.
It was an amazing experience to actually see the river crossings, that we had seen so many times on TV during the wildebeest migration.
We saw a leopard on a tree and we were lucky enough to watch four lionesses and three cubs eating a fresh hunt. In the evening safari we were able to explore a massive variety of hippopotamus and a crocodile.

Wonderful area for wildlife viewing. Having been there twice both times were awesome experiences! Will return again.
The highlight of our trip to Mara was seeing the migration at the Mara river. A once in a lifetime experience to see the Wildebeest migrating. An amazing scene of nature it was.
Masai Mara video
The best way of understanding what the Masai Mara and its conservancies are about is by seeing some thrilling footage from the area. Watch this video to experience Kenya's Masai Mara, its splendour and to meet some of our celebrity wildlife species.
Be careful, after watching this video you can be sure that you want to travel to Kenya. Today.
We saw 8 lions in one drive, and a hippo pod being circled by a dozen crocodiles that launched into the water, trying to get the baby hippos in the center of the pod. Wow!
I was fortunate that when I was recently in the Mara North Conservancy there were so few tourists. I saw plenty of wildlife. The sightings of big cats were especially good.
The Mara Triangle is the most beautiful, lush area of the Masai Mara. Loads of elephants and all types of wildlife without all the land cruiser traffic found in other areas of the Mara.

Top 10 Best Kenya Safari Lodges & Camps
Roxanne Reid is an award-winning freelance writer and editor. She has published two books about African travel. Her Africa Addict blog focuses on African travel, people, safari, wildlife, culture and villages.
Kenya offers a diversity of safari landscapes, from the Great Rift Valley to savannah, lakes, forests and mountain highlands. You’ll find wildlife such as lion, elephant and rhino, as well as the great wildebeest migration. Add on a beach break along the Indian Ocean coastline after your safari for diving or a dhow (sailing boat) trip. Given its status as a classic safari destination, it’s no surprise to find a wealth of safari lodges and camps. Here are 10 of the best Kenya Safari lodges & camps (in alphabetical order).
1. Angama Mara, Masai Mara NR
Visit the Masai Mara National Reserve for a year-round wealth of wildlife, from elephant and buffalo to big cats. It’s also home to the northern part of the annual great migration of wildebeest and zebra. At Angama Mara, each glass-fronted tent looks out over the plains of the Mara Triangle. Enjoy tree-dotted landscapes and a romantic Out of Africa picnic on the hill where scenes from the movie were shot.
Go game driving, bush walking or hot-air ballooning over the winding Mara River at dawn. Visit a Maasai manyatta (village) to learn about their age-old traditions. Enjoy a massage on your deck, gin and tonic at sunset and dinner under the stars.
Angama Mara Tours
2. Campi ya Kanzi, Amboseli NP
Enjoy a memorable safari from Campi ya Kanzi next to Amboseli National Park . Relax in your tented, thatch-roofed suite and drink in the views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Ernest Hemingway’s ‘green hills of Africa’. The small ecolodge marries comfort and an authentic safari experience in a way that protects wildlife and benefits the local Maasai community.
Go game driving or bush walking with a Maasai tracker and guide. Although the landscapes alone are worth the visit, expect to see lots of elephant in Amboseli. You’ll likely also see lion, cheetah, buffalo, hyena, zebra and giraffe.
3. Elephant Bedroom Camp, Samburu NR
Imagine riverine forest and palm groves in an otherwise dry environment. That’s the Samburu National Reserve . One of the Kenya safari camps here is Elephant Bedroom Camp, shaded by trees on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. The tents combine rustic African touches with luxury. There’s even a plunge pool on your deck.
Watch impala and elephant visit the unfenced camp and admire the stars during a private dinner on your deck. See lion, leopard, elephant or ‘specials’ like Beisa oryx, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and long-necked gerenuk on a game drive. Walk with a Samburu guide to learn about nature and Samburu culture.
Elephant Bedroom Camp Tours
4. Elsa’s Kopje, Meru NP
Elsa’s Kopje on Mughwango Hill in Meru National Park gives expansive views over volcanic plains. Its name is a nod to the famous lion of Born Free, the 1966 movie based on a true story. The lodge is above the Adamsons’ original camp where they raised and released orphaned lions. The hallmarks of Elsa’s Kopje are its seclusion, luxury and views.
Come here for enormous elephant herds. You’ll also see buffalo, lion and giraffe, and rhino in the rhino sanctuary. Enjoy cool forests, rivers with rafts of hippo, and semi-desert plains with baobab trees. Get close to nature on a guided walk, enjoy a bush breakfast, massage or cultural visit to the Tharaka community.

There was something for everybody
Conference Guest (2024)
ALOT of meeting spaces for different sized groups
For anybody concerned about it being a Resort and Casino, the casino is really hidden off in one corner, I never noticed it the entire time I was there other than exploring to figure out where things were. The bedrooms didn't have A/C which was not an issue for us except one person who is always hot.
There were a LOT of meeting spaces for different sized groups - they could accommodate a large group (300 plus) for a meeting.

The staff were very attentive and helpful!
Guest Relations Team are Phenomenal
Stayed 8 nights for meetings. The Guest Relations team at the entrance are phenomenal. The porter Paul Mwaka went out of his way to accommodate my special requests, was very attentive to the point of taking notes to make sure he got things right. Daniel too was very kind and supportive and whatever may not have gone quite right was somehow made better by this team.
Huge complex in beautiful gardens
Stayed here 3 nights for a big workshop, and enjoyed the stay. The hotel (well outside Nairobi city center) is enormous and spread out over large lush grounds, with lots of greenery, different buildings containing rooms, several restaurants, a casino, reception, bars, etc. As we were in all-day meetings we did not leave the hotel grounds, so I appreciated that the grounds were so lush and big, with lovely pools and walking paths (looking more like a resort than a conference hotel).

African Paradise
Had one of the best African experiences ever. The Nyama choma ranch atmosphere was electric, the dancers put the icing on the cake... Our waiter Elijah was charming , friendly from the word go, he got me to swear that I'll be back again at the Ranch😂😂 , he made the whole experience wonderful. He is a Five star ⭐
Excellent Service
Super excellent service. Amazing ambience, well manicured gardens and great food. The experience at the gym was super amazing as well. Kind and professional service from Christine Mugo at the reception. Keep it up!!
Great resort, easy to get to & friendly staff
Stayed with the kids for just two nights on route to a lodge in the National Park. Breakfast was really good, fantastic coffee. Swimming pool was clean but a little chilly. Rooms were good but we had booked for twin rooms and there was only one bed in each room, but it was fine as the kids just stayed in the same room. Check in was really easy. Very friendly staff.

GIRAFFE MANOR
Giraffe Manor is an exclusive boutique hotel owned by The Safari Collection. One of the most unique places to stay in the world, Giraffe Manor blends extraordinary wildlife encounters with exquisite hospitality and a long-term commitment to giraffe conservation. The historic manor house is set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in the Langata suburb of Nairobi and is one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings. It has extraordinary appeal that harks back to the 1930s when visitors first flocked to East Africa to enjoy safaris. With its stately façade, elegant interior, verdant green gardens, sunny terraces and delightful courtyards, guests often remark that it’s like walking into the film Out of Africa: indeed, one of its twelve rooms is named after the author, Karen Blixen.
One of the most fascinating things about Giraffe Manor is its resident herd of Rothschild’s giraffes who may visit morning and evening, poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary. The Rothschild’s species of giraffe was once highly endangered, but Giraffe Manor has long been part of a breeding programme which has successfully grown their numbers in the wild. Giraffe Manor can be booked for the night or as part of a complete tailor-made Kenya safari with The Safari Collection.
From encounters with the world’s tallest mammal to exploring local culture, there’s plenty to keep you entertained during your stay, both within the manor’s grounds and in the local area.
The Manor’s Journey
From 1930s hunting lodge, to pioneering the conservation of endangered Rothschild’s giraffes in the 1970s, to one of the world’s most iconic boutique hotels. Discover our history, find out what we offer and meet our team.
The Retreat
Take a stroll next door to enjoy some time in our serene wellness centre and Daisy’s Café. Indulge in a pampering spa treatment, enjoy the hot tub, sauna, steam room and gym or simply relax in the gardens overlooking the giraffe sanctuary.
HOTEL WITH GIRAFFES

Dozens of tourists evacuated amid flooding in Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve
Authorities in Kenya have rescued dozens of tourists and hotel staff who were left stranded in Kenya's famed Maasai Mara Game Reserve after heavy rains caused the Telek River to burst its banks.
Kenya's Maasai Mara Game Reserve -- one of Africa's greatest wildlife reserves -- has been left inundated in water, several luxury safari hotels left submerged following devastating floods.
Kenya's Red Cross said over 90 people have been evacuated to safety thus far following search and rescue operations in over 14 tourist camps in the reserve, most affected camps now closed.
Through collaborations with Narok's County and National Government, Mara Elephant Project, and community members, 36 people have been rescued by air and 25 through an aqua rescue team, Kenya Red Cross said. Americans were among those rescued, officials said.
"In some camps, tents have been swept away, and the Mara Bridge, linking the Mara triangle and the Greater Mara, has been washed away," said the Kenya Red Cross.
The Telek River lies across the famous "Great Migration Route" -- the annual circuit seeing wildebeest and other animals such as Zebras and Gazelle migrate from Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Maasai Mara reserve.
"Many of the visitors and workers were forced to climb trees on Tuesday evening after the camp was marooned by the water after the river burst its banks," Tobias Korir, a local journalist , told ABC. "Hoteliers say the damage was estimated to be in millions of shillings; many tents, rooms swept away."
"There is also fear that many wild animals might have been swept away by the flooding," Korir said. "Visitors could not go for game drives as heavy rains in the reserve rendered roads impassable."
The famed park -- home to each of Africa's "Big 5" animals -- draws an estimated 300,000 tourists every year, the annual "Great Migration" ranked one of the "Seven wonders of the world."
In a statement Wednesday, Kenya's Tourism minister Alfred Mutua said "several camps" have been impacted by flooding, coordinated rescue efforts deemed as effective thus far. Mutua warned all camps and hotels in the reserve that are located near rivers to prepare for evacuations should rivers overflow.
"Mother Nature is not happy with us," Narok County's Senator Ledama Olekina said.
"Mara Bush camp, JW Marriot, Intrepid mara and many other camps built along the river have been submerged," said Olekina on the current situation in the Mara.
The Narok County Government in a statement said it has been "briefed" on the heavy rains affecting the region, calling on residents to take all necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.
Heavy rains in Kenya's "long rains" season -- which typically runs from March to May -- have left at least 181 people dead and 125 injured in what is one of the East African nation's worst flooding incidents in recent memory.
Weeks of heavy rains have affected almost 200,000 people, Kenya's Great Rift Valley among the nation's worst-hit areas, according to Kenya's Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura. Flooding has also impacted other countries in the East Africa region, impacting neighbouring Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi leaving hundreds dead.
"We condole with the families that have lost their loved ones due to the floods in the country," said Kenyan President William Ruto as he visited Mai Mahiu in Nakuru County on Tuesday. "A multi-agency rescue operation, including the military, is currently underway in all affected areas."
Local residents are waiting for flood waters to recede, Kenya's Meteorological Office forecasting more rainfall across multiple regions of the country from Thursday through the weekend.

Tourists evacuated from Kenya’s Maasai Mara reserve amid flooding and heavy rains
As heavy rains continued pounding Kenya’s capital of Nairobi on Tuesday night, residents woke up to more losses in property and heavy infrastructural destruction. Three major highways were closed for the better part of the day Wednesday to due flooding, heavy traffic snarl-ups being experienced.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Tourists were evacuated by air from Kenya’s Maasai Mara national reserve Wednesday after more than a dozen hotels, lodges and camps were flooded as heavy rains battered the country.
Tourist accommodation facilities were submerged after a river within the Maasai Mara broke its banks early Wednesday. The reserve, in southwestern Kenya, is a popular tourist destination because it features the annual wildebeest migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania.
The Kenya Red Cross said it rescued more than 90 people. The Narok County government said it deployed two helicopters to carry out evacuations in the expansive conservation area.
More than 170 people have died across Kenya since mid-March when the rainy season started, causing flooding, landslides and destroying infrastructure. The Metrology Department has warned that more rain is expected this week.
On Wednesday, three major roads in the capital, Nairobi were temporarily closed due to flooding. The Kenya Red Cross rescued 11 people from a residential area — Kitengela — in the outskirts of Nairobi after their homes flooded overnight.
On Monday, a river broke through a clogged tunnel in Mai Mahiu area in western Kenya, sweeping houses away and damaging roads. The incident left 48 people dead and more than 80 others missing.
Search and rescue operations across the Mai Mahiu area are ongoing. President William Ruto on Tuesday ordered the military to join in the search.
Locals say rescue efforts have been slow due to lack of equipment to dig through the debris.
The government has urged people living in flood-prone areas to evacuate or be moved forcefully as water level in two major hydroelectric dams rise to a “historic high”.

Kenya floods hit Massai Mara game reserve, trapping tourists who climbed trees to await rescue by helicopter
By Sarah Carter
May 1, 2024 / 12:43 PM EDT / CBS News
Johannesburg — Tourists were evacuated by helicopter on Wednesday from Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve as devastating flooding in the east African nation hit the renowned wildlife sanctuary. More than 14 tourist camps were flooded, with tents being swept away as the Talek river burst its banks Tuesday afternoon.
The Kenyan Red Cross said in a message posted on social media that it had rescued 36 people by air and 25 others by ground.
Tour operators said the Talek gate, one of the park's entrances, was left impassable by the floodwaters and tourists were still waiting to be evacuated by helicopter.
- Kenyan leader vows to help "victims of climate change" amid deadly floods
Tour driver Felix Migoya told Kenya's The Standard newspaper that both tourists and local staff were forced to climb trees Tuesday night to flee the surging waters as their camps were submerged.
Meteorologists have warned that heavy rains will continue to batter the region in the coming days. Scenes of utter devastation continue to unfold as houses, schools and entire villages are swept away.
In Kenya, the death toll from weeks of flooding had reached 181 by Wednesday, according to government officials and the Red Cross, and many more people were still missing. Conservationists fear many animals have been swept away in the flooding, too.
The floods, triggered by unusually heavy seasonal rains and compounded by the El Nino weather phenomenon , have affected a vast swath of East Africa, killing dozens more people in neighboring Tanzania and at least a handful in Ethiopia.
Roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure have been swept away and the government has been criticized over slow rescue efforts.
As the water continues to rise, rescue workers with the Red Cross and the National Youth Service continued to fan out searching for bodies Wednesday as bulldozers scooped away mud and debris.
At shelters for those displaced by the floods, many people worried about loved ones still missing, last seen being washed away by the torrents.
President William Ruto, who's called those affected by the floods "victims of climate change ," has ordered the military to join in the search and rescue efforts. He visited flooded areas Wednesday and promised the government would rebuild homes, but he warned residents, "rain is going to continue, and the likelihood of flooding and people losing lives is real, so we must take preventive action."
He urged anyone still in "fragile areas that are prone to landslides and flooding" to evacuate to higher ground.

Just posting here for the benefit of others.
I spoke to the staff at the property. I am booked at fairmont mara.
Their phones were not reachable yesterday, but today i got through. May be the telecom towers are now online.
The route from nairobi to mulot is alright. They may be doing some repairs at some patches.
The safaris at where fairmont is, are operational and all fine. May be not perfect, but they seem to be operational. Obviously the staff will be more optimistic.
Sun was out yesterday and didnt rain for entire day yesterday.
Forecast for week ahead is ok. They only have a week's forecast
I’d reach out to your tour operator or safari planner, who most likely has a line open to the camps/lodges they work with and already has an up to date status. They will handle moving you if necessary. I wouldn’t bother the camps/lodges now with individual calls while they try to put things back together again.
Hi Stephanie B,
Did you learn about the current situation? Are you flying out tomorrow?
So our tour guide assures us that we will be ok. He will adjust our tours as needed so YES, we are flying out tomorrow. I know things will be muddy and maybe not see as many animals as other times but I am sure it will still be the trip of a lifetime!
Rain or not - you will love it - safaris are the best holiday ever!!
Yesss... That's the spirit... Yay! I am happy for u..enjoy...

For what it's worth, below is an update from the Masaimaratravel.com specifically stating the Governors camps are not impacted.

Personally, if I was planning on travelling to the MM in the next couple of weeks, I would not hesitate to contact the camp's reservation team directly if sufficient information isn't available on their website/social media pages.
