Jivdhan Fort Trek

Jivdhan fort trek in Junnar, Pune is considered to be a difficult trek by most trekkers. The fort stands tall at 3754 feet ASL. Located very close to Naneghat, It faces Ghatghar and was built to protect the ancient trade route of Naneghat. Giant squirrels can be spotted on this trek.

Satvahan was the first dynasty in Maharashtra. Satavahana king Gautamiputra Satkarni destroyed the Sakas and established his dominance over the Junnar area. These dynasties built many trade passes and forts over the shoulders of the mountains in Sahyadris. Around 250 BC, the Satvahana kings built the Naneghat connecting Konkan and the rest of the area by breaking through the hills near Junnar.

All entry point on the forts built by Shivaji Maharaj have a ‘Kalas’ and Lord Ganesh carved on it. Fort Jivdhan is in very close proximity of Naneghat. It was used to overlook the trade pass. Naneghat had a toll collection booth where toll was collected from commercial traders. It was considered to be an important pass as it was a gateway joining the mainlands and the seas. It was heavily guarded at all times.

The last emperor of Adilshahi of Ahmednagar was Murtija Nizam. He was imprisoned by the Mughals at Jivdhan fort. In 1635 the father of Shahaji Maharaj, the father of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj released him from the prison and gave him the throne of Ahmednagar.

Jivdhan to Naneghat has an open plateau of about two to three kilometres, which gives any clear indication of enemy approach. Jivdhan fort was captured by the British in 1818, the steps were demolished and the west gate was blocked. You can still see traces of landmines as you climb the stairs even today. Thefort was captured by Col. Prother of the East India company and later destroyed.

There are two main gates to reach the fort. The road leading to Naneghata is known as Kalyan Darwaza, while the road passing through Ghatghar village is known as Junnar Darwaza.

Jivdhan was captured by the British in 1818. They demolished the steps leading to the fort and the west gate was blocked. Even today, you can see traces of landmines as you climb the stairs. After climbing these rock cut steps, we come to a halt at a steep edge. The rock cut steps are broken here and one has to climb with the grooves on the rock. Jivdhan fort has a similar entrances to the ones we see at Chavand and Hadsar, indicating that maybe they were built during the same period.

The gate is at a right angles to the fortified steps and a bastion is built on the left side to protect the gate. You can’t see the gate of the fort, even if you climb the stairs. After entering the door, you can see a half-buried cave on the right.

The highest point on the Jivadhan fort trek is 3754 feet above sea level and it is spread over an area of 65 acres. Ruins of the fort are visible around the gate. A path to the left takes you to the ramparts while a trail on the left takes you to the hill in the middle of the fort.

There is a square water cistern on the way to the hill. There are a group of five tanks at some distance from here. Two of these tanks are adjoined while the other three are small in size.

There is a fallen temple of Jivaidevi to the south. There are two tombs behind the temple. Jivdhan fort trek gets its name from the Goddess. There’s a small lake as well here. There are five granaries inside the fort. The ashes from the last Anglo-Maratha war in 1818 are still found in these rooms today.

There is a famous pinnacle one end of the fort called Vaanarlingi. It is frequented by Rock Climbers. The shape of the fort is rectangular. It provides beautiful panoramic views of Konkan from the edge of Vaanarlingi. From the top of Jivdhan fort trek, one can see Nanacha Aanghta, Harishchandragad, Ratangad, Naneghat,Hadsar fort,Nimgiri fort, Hadsar, Chavand, Kukdeshwar’s temple, small dam of Dhasai and the roads in Malshej Ghat.

There are two entrances to the fort. The road leading to Naneghat is known as Kalyan Darwaza, while the road passing through Ghatghar village is known as Junnar Darwaza. It takes a bit of rock climbing to get to both of these entrances. It is for this reason that the Jivdhan fort trek is considered to be a difficult trek.

The trail to Naneghat plateau to Vaanarlingi, a diverison to the left takes you to a forest. Taking this trail will reach you to the hill of the fort. There are rock cut steps on the way to the fortification of the fort.

Once we reach the fortified wall a path on the right side of the wall leads to the pinnacle, while the path on the left leads to the steps of the fort. If choosing to explore the Vaanarlingi pinnacle, there is a small gap between the pinnacle and the wall of the fort. It can be crossed at the foot of the pinnacle. Near the base of the pinnacle, there is a seven feet long cave dug. Another cave measuring 10×8 feet has been dug at the inner end of this cave.

Coming back to the steps, they are 10 feet long and 1.5 feet high, they are worn out and have collapsed in some places. This part is particularly risky and can be attempted with the help of locals. Once you reach the gate, one has to make their way through a small gap as the entrance is in ruins.

Another approach exists from the from Ghatghar village, one way goes to Naneghat and the other goes to the fort. It is easier as compared to the other route till one reaches the steps which are not in a good condition and become slippery during the monsoons. From here we can reach the fort in 2 hours.

How to reach

If attempting the Jivhdan fort trek from Pune, reach Ghatghar which is 25 km from Pune-Junnar. Naneghat is at a distance of 5 km from Ghatghar. If you have your own vehicle, you can reach the base of fort through this way.

Your time can be wasted in this way. In this case, you will be better off coming with your own or rented vehicle. Still, if you intend to arrive by public transport, read the information below.

If coming by public transport then you have to come to Kalyan bus stand first. From Kalyan bus stand you have to catch the bus going to Malshej Ghat. Then you have to get off at Tokawade or Vaishakhare village. From here you can take a rickshaw or jeep to reach naneghat starting point.

My Experience :

We reached the base village of Jivdhan fort via Aurangabad-Ahmednagar-Junnar-Ghatghar-Naneghat route. At this location, there are a few shops. Here’s where we had breakfast. This place has good facilities for breakfast and lunch as well as accommodation.

Around 1’o clock we reached the base of the fort. And started the trek at 1:15. The fort was not clearly visible due to the rain, wind, and dense fog. Due to this, we had difficulty finding the correct route to the fort.  And this is why we lost our way. Despite all that, we had a great time as well. We were walking through the dense fog. It felt like we were walking in heaven. Wild experiences like these are rare.

After that, we wasted an hour trying to find the correct route. It took us some time to get to the right place. But after some time we came to the right place. Actually we made a mistake. The point from where we started trekking, from this point after 15-20 minutes of walk, there is a small trail to the right. We had to take the right turn from here. Sadly, we were unable to see this trail in the fog, so we went straight instead of taking right turn and got lost.

As soon as we realized that we’d lost our way, we waited until the fog cleared. A little later, after the fog cleared, we spotted the road and a few peoples as well. Approximately 10-15 minutes after walking on this trail, you will see a small trail on the left. After passing there is a dense forest. Through this dense forest, the trek route continues. A stunning view of Vanarlingi pinnacle can be enjoyed from the top of the fort .

From my experience , I found the trek to Jivdhan fort a bit difficult. Some patches will give challenge to  your fitness. Having been there was an unforgettable experience. You will undoubtedly have an unforgettable experience on this trek. This experience you will never forget in your whole life. Do this once in a lifetime. You will have a unique experience that you have never experienced before.

Best Time To Visit Jivdhan Fort:

By taking precautions we can climb easily. Along with the fort, you will get to see the supernatural beauty of the Sahyadri mountain range. The experience of wandering in the monsoon is next-level.

At a distance of 2 km from Naneghat and 32 km from Malshej Ghat, Jivdhan Fort is a hill fortress located near Malshej in Maharashtra. Situated near Naneghat, it is one of the historical forts in Malshej Ghat and among the popular trekking places near Pune. Situated at a height of about 3,757 feet in the Sahyadri Mountain range, Jivdhan Fort is a part of the 'Famous 5' forts near Pune. The other four being the Chavaand, Hadsar, Shivneri, and Naneghat. As per the history, Jivdhan Fort dates back to the Satavahana era and has been a significant fort throughout history due to its proximity to the historic Naneghat. Jivdhan Fort guarded this route, which was a strategic location for many kingdoms. The Mughals imprisoned Murtaza, the last ruler of Adilshahi of Ahmednagar, at Jivdhan Fort. In 1635 Shahaji Bhosle, the father of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj freed him from the prison and declared him the king of Ahmednagar. The fort was sacked and plundered by the British upon siege between 1815 and 1818. Although the fortifications have crumbled down, one can see a huge storehouse or Kothi, which has was used to store grains. Besides the storehouse, there are several interesting ruins and remnants, including a few water cisterns and a temple dedicated to Goddess Jivai, who is supposed to be the patron deity of the fort. The fort's Northern bastion is in a pretty good condition even today. One can also see a few cisterns and remnants of old buildings near this bastion. From this point, one can get the stunning views of nearby forts such as Naneghat, Harishchandragad, Hadsar, Chavand, and Ratangad. The highlight of the Jivdhan Fort is the breathtaking view it offers of the Vanarlingi Pinnacle. The pinnacle looks small from far but starts appearing bigger as you get closer to the top of the fort. There are two routes to reach the top of Jivdhan Fort. You can go via the Naneghat route or else take the Ghatghar route. The Naneghat route is suitable only for experienced trekkers as it is rather challenging, and there are chances of getting lost due to confusing trails through dense forests. It takes about 2 hours to reach the top via this route. Even though the Ghatghar route has many rocky patches, this 5 km trek route is easier when compared to the Naneghat route. On this route, after a certain point, there are rock-cut steps, which lead to the fort's Kalyan gate. Be cautious as these steps may be slippery in monsoon. However, supportive hooks attached to the walls along the rock-cut steps makes the climb easier. No matter which route you take, make sure you hire a guide to show you the correct path leading to the top of Jivdhan Fort. The fort is open 24 hrs to the general public for all days of the week. One has to show their ID to enter the fort and for foreign nationals, the passport is mandatory. For camping, Kothi is an ideal place to stay which has the capacity of accommodating 8-10 people if you do not have tents. If you have tents, make sure that you set up your campsite where the wind is less. Also, ensure that you check the surrounding area for any crawlers. Timings: 6 AM - 6 PM Entry: Free

Jivdhan Trek, Mumbai Overview

Jivdhan is a hill fort in the state of Maharashtra. It is a part of the 'famous five' fort in the Sahyadri mountain range. The other forts which are a part of the famous five include Naneghat, Shivneri, Chavand and Hadsar.

Info About the Fort : Jivdhan (Jeevdhan) is one of the most popular forts for experienced trekkers. It is also grouped under the famous 5 trekking destinations in Maharashtra. Located in Junnar Taluka, the fort falls under difficult treks as there are misleading jungle trails and some hill patches that require a lot of mountaineering experience to cross. On some sections of the trek, you might also need to use ropes. Ideal for folks who want to experience an extreme mountaineering experience.

Incidents at Jivdhan : Again we would like to highlight that Jivdhan is not for novice trekkers. Here is an incident from the past wherein trekkers have been rescued from the fort as they were stuck or lost while trekking here.

Routes : There are two base places for this fort. One can go via the Naneghat route or take the Ghatgar route. The Naneghat route is quite challenging and is recommended only for experienced trekkers. We would recommend that you take a guide along with you from the base villages. Not many trekkers come here and hence there are chances that you may lose your route while trekking. Also Beware of beehives on trees. There are plenty of beehives in this area and if you trigger any, the consequences will not be good.

What to see at Jivdhan :

  • Kothi - This is the storehouse on the fort that is still intact. Be careful while exloring these Kothis as there are chances that you might find some creepy crawlers inside.
  • Water Cisterns: We spotted a couple of water cisterns on the fort. Please do not use water from these as it may be contaminated.
  • North front - From here you can see the other forts surrounding Jivdhan. One can see Harishchandragad, Ratangad and the entire Junnar plateau from here on a clear sunny day.

Best season to visit : The best time to visit this fort without any doubt is during the monsoon season. One can see a lot of waterfalls enroute and also take a splash in these. But, do take extreme precaution on the slippery patches of the trek during the rainy season.  Winter is ideal for folks who want to camp overnight.

Camping info : The Kothi is ideal if you do not have tents. This has a capacity of 8-10 people. If you have tents, make sure that you setup your campsite where the wind is less. Also ensure that you check the surrounding area for any crawlers. There are many scorprions and vipers in the jungle. For camping, ensure that you take plenty of water for cooking and drinking purposes. After dinner, clean the campsite, else the mice will do the cleaning for you and in return give you a sleepless night :).
