Your review is recommended to be at least 140 characters long

The reserve at KaMsholo Bushveld Safaris includes a wonderful array of giraffes, zebra, blue wildebeest, greater kudu, nyala, impala, common reedbuck, common duiker, and warthog, among other animals. There are some large pythons among the rich reptile fauna, as well as crocodiles in the large dam to the south, where catch and release fishing is permitted. Birders will be enthralled by the more than 300 species recorded in the area—the raptors are particularly impressive. Furthermore, at KaMsholo, safari-goers can spot Hornbills, Crested Guineafowl, Rollers, Kingfishers, Ostriches, Vultures, Bee-Eaters, and many other birds.

Swaziland and its parks and reserves are year-round destinations, although the ideal time to visit if you want to view animals is during the dry winter months of May to September. Summer, which is between October and April, is hot and humid, but the scenery is lush and green, with plenty of birds and local culture to enjoy.

Safari-goers visiting KaMsholo Bushveld Safaris can enjoy traditional guided game drives in a 4WD vehicle. Popular game viewing times are in the morning and the late afternoon, both of which capture the golden hours. For those who prefer a more up-close experience, there are fantastic guided walks through the bush and focus more on birding and nature. Other activities available include horseback riding, pony rides, self-drive options, and fishing.

Tinsele Rest Camp, located two kilometres from the restaurant and at the foot of the Lebombo Mountains, offers a calm overnight escape, which is ideal for families, small parties, nature lovers, and birders. Budget travellers can stay at the Bushveld Backpackers near the main welcome area, while business travellers and conference guests can stay at the Bhekilanga Guesthouse in Nsoko Village, which is also managed by KaMsholo.

eSwatini Travel Guide: Land of the Swazi

Explore eswatini with this helpful eswatini guide and experience the swazi-lifestyle, stunning highlands with adventurous activities, amazing waterfalls and a plethora of wildlife reserves.

ESWATINI NATIONAL PARKS VISITED

ESWATINI RESERVES EXPLORED

eSwatini Travel Guide

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland , is the second smallest country in the continent of Africa and is landlocked by South Africa and Mozambique. Although it's a small country, the Kingdom of Eswatini has a lot to offer, from nature and wildlife reserves to cultural experiences, city life, and adventurous activities like quad biking, hiking trails, white water rafting, caving, and canopy tours. Swaziland is also known for its handmade products, like candles, glass, woven baskets, and other curios. Visiting colorful local markets for souvenir shopping is also a nice cultural experience.

If Eswatini isn't on your bucket list yet, reconsider adding it! Because each place is unique, it's a country worth exploring for at least 6 to 7 days. The best places to visit in Eswatini are Royal Hlane National Park, Malolotja Nature Reserve, Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Mkhaya Game Reserve, KaMsholo Bushveld Safaris, and Shewula Mountain Camp.

Another Eswatini Travel Tip is attending Eswatin's largest cultural festival, the Umhlanga Reed Dance Festival in Ludzidzini Royal Residence. And if you're a lover of music, a must-visit is the MTN Bushfire Festival.

Because Eswatini borders Mozambique and South Africa , it's a very good idea to plan a 2 or 3-country itinerary. Passing through Eswatini is also a shortcut to get from Kruger to Hluhluwe, so why not add a few nights extra in this land of the Swazi to experience a different country and visit the highlights of Swaziland?

Check out this ultimate Eswatini guide where I share the most popular places to visit in Swaziland including some of the best things to do and things to know before you travel to Eswatini , for example,  the best time to visit , safety in Eswatini, and visa requirements.

Best time to visit eSwatini

What is the best time to visit eSwatini? The best time of the year to visit eSwatini depends on your planned activities. In general, it's a year around destination with all kinds of activities. If you want to go on a safari in eSwatini, the best time to visit is during the dry winter. The dry season in eSwatini is from mid-April to mid-October, with an average temperature of 20 degrees. During the day it can get hot, especially in the sun, but in the evening the temperature drops, so pack some extra layers.

The wet season in eSwatini  is during the summer months. The rainy season starts end of October until March.

Safety in eSwatini

eSwatini is a safe country with low crime rates. Avoid travel by road outside major towns at night. I traveled through eSwatini with a guide and I felt safe at all times. The Kingdom of Eswatini has also received the Safe Travels Stamp of approval from the World Travel & Tourism Council for its Health & Safety protocols to give travellers the confidence to travel in Eswatini as safe as possible.

Do I need a visa when traveling to Africa?

Visa requirements for eSwatini

Most tourists that visit eSwatini do NOT require a visa to enter eSwatini (Swaziland) . A full passport valid for at least three months is required for entry into Eswatini. Examples of countries that don't need a visa for eSwatini are the USA, most countries that are part of the European Union (EU), Japan, most Commonwealth countries and a few other countries. Tourist or business travellers are allowed to visit Eswatini for up to 30 days. If you want to know exactly if you need a visa, check the visa guide of the Government of the Kingdom of eSwatini . If you do require a visa to visit Eswatini, they can NOT be obtained on arrival at the Eswatini border post, but must be organized in advance from Eswatini’s Missions Abroad. This might change in the future.

Spoken languages in eSwatini

Eswatini has two official languages: SiSwati (or Swazi) and English , but about 76.000 people in Eswatini also speak Zulu , and about 19.000 people speak Tsonga . Because of a large Portuguese community from Mozambique, Eswatini introduced Portuguese as a third language in the schools.

Which vaccinations and antimalarials do I need for Africa?

COVID-19 Travel Restrictions Eswatini

In May 2022 it was easy to travel from South Africa into Eswatini through various border posts. To make things simple for tourists, they basically have the same COVID-requirements as South Africa. You will either need a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate and must be fully vaccinated (2 dosis of the vaccine), or a valid negative COVID-19 test result that is not older than 72 hours for unvaccinated people. They also allow people with a valid recovery certificate to enter Eswatini. Eswatini's Safe Travels Stamp given by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) confirms that Eswatini is following world-class health and hygiene protocols. It's global safety and hygiene stamp for Travel & Tourism, designed to address COVID-19 and similar outbreaks.

On the edge of Shewula Nature Reserve , on top of the Lubombo Mountains, you can find Shewula Mountain Camp . Malolotja Canopy Tour

Malolotja Nature Reserve is a hiker's paradise and one of the most beautiful highland reserves in Eswatini and Southern Africa. Malolotja offers amazing views of the hills, the gorges, and Malolotja Falls. Malolotja doesn't have big game, but it's the place where you can find the biggest antelope, the Eland. Other wildlife to find in Malolotja are the blesbok, zebra, wildebeest, mountain reedbuck, and oribi. If you don't have the time to overnight in this stunning reserve, join the adventurous  Malolotja Canopy Tour . First, you'll drive through the park where you'll be amazed by the incredible views. After a 10-minute hike, you start the canopy tour covering 10 treetop zip-lines and one 50m suspension bridge with amazing views of the hills, Silotshwane Gorge, and the Majolomba River.

Mantenga Cultural Village

The Mantenga Cultural Village is one of the top cultural tourist attractions in Swaziland where you're able to experience local dance performances and drumming by local Swazi in traditional clothing. I personally missed the authentic feel, but for first-time travelers in eSwatini or for people who are short on time while passing through Swaziland it is a good stopover and therefore worth a visit.

"Eswatini's Refuge for Endangered Species" In the southeast of Eswatini, the heart of Eswatini’s lowveld, lies Mkhaya Game Reserve, a unique African wildlife experience.

Mkhaya is all about intimate encounters with some of Africa's icons.  All travel within the reserve is solely guided, by open Land Rovers or on foot, providing superb photographic opportunities and probably the best chance of seeing Black Rhino in the wild in Africa today.

Mkhaya has been assisted with generous grants and support from the World Wide Fund for Nature, the SA Nature Foundation, Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Dr Anton Rupert, HRH Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, the Prettejohn family of Ngwenya Glass, The European Union, Rhino Rescue Trust of Great Britain, Netherlands Rhino Foundation, Corrine Itten, Lowry Park Zoo, San Diego Zoo and many others.  Their efforts are greatly appreciated and it is their support that has helped Mkhaya survive.  Besides this generous assistance, Mkhaya's operations are totally self-financed through visitor revenues, conservation revenues, Nguni cattle and other self-sustaining resources.

Named after the Senegalia ( Acacia) nigrescens tree once prolific across the lowveld, ‘Mkhaya’ also aptly means ‘home’ derived from the fact that this valuable hardwood is the chosen tree for structural building in Eswatini.  Knobthorn trunks have been incorporated in some of Stone Camp’s structures.

With a somewhat different history beginning with the conservation of Eswatini's (formerly Swaziland) beautiful indigenous Nguni cattle, Mkhaya took on the vision of nurturing and propagating locally threatened and endangered species.  With very stringent conservation security, Mkhaya is now home to Eswatini’s only buffalo, sable antelope, Livingstone’s eland and tsessebe populations.  Along with special species such as b;ack & white rhino, giraffe and roan antelope, these animals are often sighted at close range on safari.  Birding is an additional highlight.

Mkhaya has a number of fenced areas to enable intense species management and the high security necessary for endangered species. As and when population numbers grow, nuclei are released into the bigger game sections, which to date include sable, black and white rhino, tsessebe to name a few.

Mkhaya is an award winning reserve, having received the AA's 'Travellers Value Award for Top-End Leisure Travellers'  & 'AA Highly Recommended Accommodation' while the rhino viewing has been quoted as being '...on par with a mountain gorilla encounter in Central Africa', by photo-journalist Stephen Cunliffe in Wild Magazine.

Mkhaya is staffed and patrolled entirely by Swazis from neighbouring communities and currently boasts what is arguably Africa's most effective anti-poaching unit. It is totally self-financed through visitor revenues and your support is greatly appreciated as a means of sustaining this unique international conservation effort.

A trip to Mkhaya is a trip into Real Africa - a soul enriching, quality experience you'll never forget.

Essential Information:  Please note pre-booking is essential; No children under 10 years; There is NO ELECTRICITY nor INTERNET at Stone Camp - a chance to truly get off grid.  The accommodation units are semi-open, with no doors or windows.  There are fixed entry and exit times of either 10am or 4pm depending on your chosen package.  The meeting point is not staffed and guests are met by prior arrangement only.

Mkhaya Game Reserve Information Sheet

kamsholo bushveld safaris in eswatini is located in the

Mkhaya lies in the lowlands, at an altitude of 200m – 355m above sea level.  This area is historically drought-prone, with an average rainfall of just 600mm (50”).  Dolerite intrusions through sandstone is characteristic of Mkhaya, with associated Acacia savanna on sandy soils. The sandstone itself produces sandy soils prone to leaching, which supports more broad-leaved vegetation (e.g. Terminalia spp. ), with large-leafed plants (Grewia spp) occurring in the higher regions of granite in the north-west.  A number of saline pans exist on the reserve, which are calcrete based.

kamsholo bushveld safaris in eswatini is located in the

Mkhaya sits within the savanna biome, with thickets and linear semi-deciduous forests following the water courses.  Mkhaya is the only known protected location with endemic Aloe species Drimiopsis reillyana , named after Liz Reilly.

With the range of base rock, Mkhaya’s grass types include sweetveld on the Dolerite, sour/mixed veld on the granite and sandstone.  During the cattle ranching years, certain areas were heavily overgrazed, resulting in strong Dichrostachys thickets below mature Acacia nigresens, A. nilotica and other Acacias .  Elephant impact has been restricted to certain areas to safeguard substantial loss of biodiversity on the greater Mkhaya.  The elephant opened up the bush to such an extent that the ancient trees have all but died, replaced by successional Uclear, Dichrostachys, Senegalia (Acacia) senegalensis and Vachellia (Acacia) nilotica thickets or open sour/mixed grassveld savanna.  The western area is populated with Combretum, Terminalia, Sclerocaria and Pterocarpus spp.

Mkhaya has a few essential, mostly dry rivers crossing the park, each fringed with tall, dry, semi-deciduous forests filled with Scotia, Sclerocaria, Phoenix reclinata and Combretum imberbe and features large Mhlume, Ficus & Red Ivory trees or d ry Olea europaea subsp. africana (Wild Olive) forests.

Numerous wild flower species add stunning colour to the bush in spring and summer, including Gloriosa, Scadoxis and Hibiscus spp.

Although the outward focus is often on the larger mammal species, the little ones are as important as they play a fundamental role in maintaining the balance in the environment.  Mkhaya presently supports the only tsessebe, sable, buffalo and Livingstone’s eland populations in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), as well as being home to roan antelope, black & white rhino, leopard, hyena and many other species.  Smaller game frequents the camp often and is fairly relaxed around guests. These include Warthog, Nyala, Suni (Livingstone’s Antelope), Grey and Red Duiker.

During 1995 Mkhaya hit world headlines when it received 6 black rhino from South Africa, a project funded by the Taiwanese Government and heralded as a turning point in international efforts to protect endangered species. During 1997 the first two baby elephant to be born in Eswatini in one hundred years were born at Mkhaya.  In 2015 the decision was taken to remove elephant from Mkhaya due to the extensive habitat modification and threat to greater bio-divesity.

The Nguni breed of cattle, which was at the threshold of extinction in the1980’S, was almost wholly responsible for financing original land purchases and the establishment of rhino and elephant and the other endangered species at Mkhaya.  Mkhaya’s game populations are largely descendants of animal introductions to Mlilwane in the 60’s including Eswatini’s only warthog introductions of 8 animals in 1963; the white rhino came back from less than 20 animals and the blue wildebeest from approximately 40 animals. Most species have been re-established after their total extinction in Eswatini.

Mkhaya’s reptiles include a wide variety of snakes, a healthy range of lizards, two tortoises, terrapin and crocodiles.  Just before rain, the many pans became a deafening chorus of frog song, including painted reed frog, kassinas, bullfrog, platana and grey tree frogs.  Any amount of time spent studying the undergrowth will reveal a rich diversity of insect and invertebrate life.  In fact, game drives often stop to witness the amazing life in heaving rhino middens.

Find Out More

Stone Camp is the creation of Ted Reilly, named for the dolerite stones used in the construction of our unique architecture.  Stone Camp is about returning to the basics in comfort, reducing the barriers to the bush and encouraging guests to immerse themselves in nature.  Electricity is replaced by candles and paraffin lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere at sundown.  Gas geysers warm the water and solar provides limited logistical power.  Our buildings have no doors or windows, but a simple “gate” prevents larger unwanted visitors.

At the heart of this little bush camp is a giant Sausage Tree, Kigelia africana, believed to be centuries old.  The reception, curio shop, campfire and dining areas are discretely constructed alongside our sausage tree.  From here sand paths lead to the 12 accommodation units, hidden in the riverine forest.

All accommodation units are semi-open with half walls and tall thatch roofs suspended on thick stone pillars.  A full wall separates the living space from the bathroom, which has a shower, basin and toilet, all with views into the forest.  The floors are simple concrete screed, which together with the thatch and stone, keep the units cool in hot summers.  Our units have various room configurations, including twins, doubles, a triple and three family units sleeping 4-6 people.

Stone Camp is alive with life.  Suni, nyala and warthog are regular guests.  The regal crested guineafowl are a feature of camp, with special sightings including narina trogon, pink-throated twinspots, yellow nicator and purple-crested touraco.

Mkhaya offers set packages inclusive of Conservation fee, accommodation, meals and game drives as stipulated.  Guests are met by Mkhaya Guides at the Phuzamoya Pick-up Point at either 10h00 or 16h00 as prearranged, and escourted to the park Head Quarters for registration and refreshments. Vehicles are left at the headquarters, or in secure parking outside the park if the river is up.  From here, guests transfer into the open Land Rovers with their small overnight bags and enjoy a game drive en-route to Stone Camp.  Overnight guests enjoy an early morning wake up call complete with coffee, tea and a small snack, ahead of an exciting sunrise game drive.

All packages are pre-booked through Big Game Parks Central Reservations.  Sunhats, sun cream, a warm top and cameras should be kept close at hand.

Multi-night Stays (FROM - 2 nights)

Multi-night stays are the best way to immerse yourself in nature.

The rates depend on arrival and departure times, with the options of:

  • DBB + 24 hr (16h00 arrival day 1 / 10h00 depart day 3)
  • 24hr + 24 hr (10h00 arrival & departure or 16h00 arrival & departure)

Nature’s simplicity is best experienced in quiet time and through observation, both highly recommended.

Mkhaya dining focuses on the campfire and hearty bush meals, including fresh salads and vegetables, game meat, local ‘phutu’ and freshly home-baked bread.  Depending on the size of the group, some meals are prepared on the fire.  Breakfast and dinner are served around the fire, while lunch is often set up under the giant Sausage Tree.  In inclement weather, dining is moved under our large thatch roof, suspended on hardwood tree trunks, planted in the sand.

Kirky's Hide

Just across the riverbed from Stone Camp a short path leads to Kirky’s Hide, a solid building with viewing windows overlooking a busy pan.  For the patient observer it can provide hours of pleasure whether you are interested in birds, mammals, reptiles, insects or amphibians.  Time spent here is about what is happening outside and respect is requested for those who may have travelled some distance for their daily water.  Waterholes are obvious places for predator ambush, causing wildlife visitors to be extra alert - a sudden movement may result in the bush exploding with a surprising number of nyala, kudu and other wildlife… and a day without water for the scattered.

Kirky’s Hide takes its name in honour of a precious friendship with a wonderful man, whose love of, and commitment to Nature in all its magnificent glory, was unlimited. “Kirky” was a man of great compassion. He practiced respect for trees and worms and decent people and beetles and birds… all creatures and all things natural. He was the gentlest and the most honourable man and one of Africa’s greatest naturalists – and for those who did not know this, it was because he was so modest.

Howard Douglas Kirk was a gifted wildlife documentary film-maker, tragically killed in a car accident on his way to film a documentary on St Lucia’s wetlands.  His talent and bravery are evident in the successful documentary “Jezebel” recording the beginnings of Nature conservation in Eswatini, produced by Anglia TV as part of its Survival series. Other documentaries include ‘The Year of the Dragons’, ‘Miniature Monsters’ and ‘Rhino Ride’. As a young ranger in Kruger Park, Ted Reilly met Howard busy filming beetles. A firm friendship developed and years later Howard married Ted’s sister Roma. Of Howard, Ted always said: “He was the finest naturalist I ever knew, and easily the most modest.”

For the consideration of the animals and the enjoyment of all guests we ask that you please remain still and quiet.

In typical Ted speak: "the golden rule: sit still and shut up!"

Executive Lounge (Conferencing retreat)

Fashioned in the same architectural style, the cool Executive Lounge has a solid stone wall along one side, sloping down each side to a low wall in front.  Settle down quietly with a book or binoculars on comfortable furniture, aware of the nyala, suni and guineafowl passing by.

Our Executive Lounge was also developed with Bush Think Tanks (conferences) in mind.  Stone Camp is perfect retreat for uninterrupted strategy sessions for small executive teams.  Solar power is set up for laptops and projectors, and sketchy cell reception negates pesky interruptions.

Reception, Bar & Curio Shop

Stone Camp’s Reception area doubles as a bar, offering a selection of drinks kept cool in gas fridges.  Alongside, a small curio shop sells bush-related curios and high quality branded merchandise.

All activities at Mkhaya are guided and form part of the various packages, both Day Tours and Overnight.  Whether on foot or Land Rover, guests encounter a myriad of species, including endangered mammals, colourful birdlife, interesting insects and the all-important vegetation.  These fascinating creatures and life forms are woven into your Swazi safari.  But yes, the highlights of Mkhaya are definitely the Black Rhino, Narina Trogon and Crested Guineafowl.

Mkhaya has a handful of knowledgeable Field Guides who enjoy hosting small groups, weaving our history and ethos into interpretation of the environment. Local knowledge allows them discretion with individual animals, some of which are incredibly tolerant, while others are best viewed from further away.

Activities take place pre-breakfast, mid-morning and mid-afternoon into the evening, and are built into packages as appropriate.

Please note child restrictions: 10+ years generally and 13+ for walking safaris.

Day Tour (10h00 - 16h00)

Mkhaya’s Day Tour is a great alternative for groups and those short on time.  Our guides and Land Rovers meet guests at the Mkhaya Pick up Point at 10h00 and transfer to our Head quarters.  Depart on a game drive exploring the endangered species section, providing incredible photo opportunities, before arriving at Stone Camp for a hearty bush lunch and chance to refresh.  A second game drive after lunch ends at your vehicle at 16h00.

Please note children under 10 years old are not permitted on game drives.

Game Drives

Open Land Rover Game Drives wind along bush tracks, revealing special species and sharing the cultural significance of our natural world.  Low hanging branches bring an ever-present element of adventure.  Guests are requested to bring sunblock and sunhats, preferably broad-brimmed, and a sarong or light long-sleeved cotton shirt in summer. Bottled water is always available on the drive.

Walking slows the pace, getting you closer to the environment and making your safari more personal.

Guests are led through pockets of bushveld thickets and stunning climax Knobthorn (Acacia nigresens) Veld, with common sightings including black & white rhino, giraffe, nyala, an abundance of smaller invertebrates and birdlife including riverine, bushveld, forest and woodland species. Good closed walking shoes with solid soles to prevent thorn penetration, sun hats, insect repellant, long sleeve and long cotton trousers are recommended.  Binoculars and cameras are always an advantage. Walking Safaris are offered on the 24 hour and 24hr PLUS packages.

Please note minimum age is 13 years.

Bush Trails & Luxury Walking Safaris

Mkhaya Bush Trails are a fabulous way for small groups (4-8 people) to really embrace the bush between 1 April – 30 September.  An option of 1 and 2-night trails are on offer, with improved chances of seeing giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, white and black rhino and kudu on the longer trail.  Moving on foot brings to life the smaller intriguing species such as bagworms and processionary worms.

Bush Trails are fully catered in Jubela's Camp, a rustic tented camp with rudimentary ablutions and facilities.

More civilized Luxury Walking Safaris are based at Stone Camp.  Please note minimum age is 13 years.

TOUR REVIEWS

” It was fantastic! We had a WONDERFUL safari in Mlilwane Eswatini! We are so happy and felt that we had great value for money. We experienced so much and was sometimes beyond/outside our confort zone, but that made us grow as riders. The horses were GREAT – I especially fell in love with Tsawo, the Frieser I rode. Our guide that rode with us for four days, Natty – was absolutely fantastic. Eswatini is a new experience for us and we fell in love with the small, beautiful country. It's much more ”African” than South Africa, more traditional, safe and clean and people are very friendly. It's also one of the most beautiful countries I have visited. SAMPLE ITINERARY

** Please note that this is a sample itinerary and is subject to change depending on weather, route conditions and wildlife viewing.

We have a 7-night trail which either includes 2 nights of sleeping out, or is completely lodge-based depending on the weather. There is the option to add on 2 further nights to Mkhaya Game Reserve to see both rhinos and buffaloes. See add-ons below.

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL & INTRODUCTORY RIDE

Arrive in the early afternoon. Enjoy your first evening game drive to meet the horses and guides. Saddle up and enjoy an easy paced ride in Africa’s golden hour, with a fun canter or two. Return to the rest camp for dinner in the Hippo Haunt Restaurant your first night in Mlilwane at the Mlilwane Rest Camp.

DAY 2 - MORNING & EVENING RIDES

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the Hippo Haunt Restaurant.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary has four areas of undulating grass plains. Numerous dirt roads and a few bridle-tracks weave through the plains, providing plenty of fun trots and canter opportunities, with off-path riding for close wildlife sightings. The wildlife is very relaxed in the presence of the horses, making for incredible viewing.  These four plains are split by perennial rivers and streams, or the stunning Hippo Pool, and are flanked by rural community, private farmlands, commercial forestry and the Nyonyane Mountain.

All rides will have a good balance of walk, trot and canter (guests depending). Plains Rides get to see warthog, wildebeest, zebra, impala, nyala, and blesbuck. Kudu and crocodiles are often seen, with the endangered Roan Antelope being the special sighting of Mlilwane. You will ride past the rare and locally endangered antelope breeding area, where waterbuck, roan antelope, hartebeest, springbuck, suni and waterbuck can be seen, along with endangered blue crane and ground hornbills.

The 3 hour morning ride combines the southern and eastern plains, riding through the historical old open-cast Tin Mines.

Head back to the lodge for lunch and a siesta. In the afternoon, the ride follows the Mhlambanyatsi River Valley with kudu and other antelope sightings being common. A fantastic single-track canter along the vlei is a firm favourite!

Overnight at Mlilwane Rest Camp.

DAY 3 - LODGE-BASED ITINERARY / SLEEP-OUT ITINERARY

LODGE-BASED ITINERARY: Breakfast at the Hippo Haunt Restaurant before departing for your 4 – 6 hour ride with picnic lunch.

Mlilwane’s Nyonyane Mountain (Execution Rock) marks the habitat transition zone between middleveld and highveld. You’ll explore the 4×4 tracks and the many hiking trails on horseback. The ride is a combination of  adventurous trails through rocky and forest sections, at times skirting the old mine shafts and following the old aqueducts which fed the mines a century ago. This small iconic mountain is deceptively steep and you might need to dismount and assist the horses with the climb. The pace is mostly slow on the mountain, and the red clay soils become close to impassable in wet weather, so these rides are weather dependent. The Rock of Execution may be supplemented for the Full Day Ride if necessary, depending on weather and ability.

Rock of Execution is a wonderful trail summiting Nyonyane Mountain, complete with impressive views of the Ezulwini, Mantenga and Malkerns Valleys below. The trail crosses the Central Plains, following game paths and cut trails to the saddle, where the horses are released in a small paddock. Riders then hike the last stretch to the summit to enjoy snack lunch with the ultimate 360 degree views.  After hiking the Summit, you will remount and drop down the northern slopes to the Usushwana River. The rides traverses ever changing habitats, rides along the old railways and takes a well-earned lunch break on the banks of the Usushwana.

The return ride follows the river east, along a forested road with a few canter opportunities, back onto Mphumalanga Plains and home via the Hippo Dam.

Overnight at Mlilwane Rest Camp

SLEEP OUT ITINERARY: This morning,  prepare for your two-night sleepout adventure.

Set out to ride across Nyonwane Mountain, traversing mountain roads and narrow tracks. Descend to the Usushwana River, where a delightful picnic lunch awaits. Following the riverbank, the trail heads northwest along an old railway line, guiding you into a rural community. Climbing through community homesteads, the trail leads to Mlilwane North and concludes at EmaSomini Camp in the late afternoon (5-6 hours riding). While wildlife is scarce in the mountains, the plains offer glimpses of diverse fauna on both your departure and return days and the views are stunning.

Spend the night at EmaSomini Fly Camp, a rustic camp within the Mlilwane reserve. Experience cooking over a campfire and a true camping experience. Despite washing facilities being limited, it is a truly immersive outdoor experience.

DAY 4 - LODGE-BASED ITINERARY / SLEEP-OUT ITINERARY

LODGE-BASED ITINERARY: This morning you’ll head out on a 4 hour speciality Ride, including lunch at Malandelas Country Restaurant. It will be one of the 3 below – or something just as unique

Community & Craft Lunch Ride:  Leaving Mlilwane, this route passes through rural community to Malandela’s Restaurant in Malkerns, where we enjoy lunch on the terrace, looking across the farm towards Mlilwane’s mountains. Lunch and drinks are included in the trail fee, but guests are welcome to bring their cards for curio shopping at Malandelas’ various fair-trade craft shops. The return ride is through small private farms, back into Mlilwane for an easy afternoon in Rest Camp. The outing takes 3-4 hours, with 2 hours riding.

Poachers Breakfast Ride: A short, fun single-trail trail to a fabulous site within Mlilwane, where brunch is set up for the group, and the horses get to enjoy a hay net! After brunch, guests ride an alternative shorter route home. We have a few site options, decided on prevailing weather and going. The outing is around 3 hours, with about 2 hrs riding.

Houndless-Hunt Ride This one hour ride is fun and fast, fashioned on the fox or drag hunts with a series of good paced canter legs, small river crossings and a few logs to hop along the way. This ride is a group ride, and depends on the ability of the entire group and the fitness of the horses at the time.

There is time for a break at the lodge, before heading out on your evening activity.

In the evening, you’ll have a sunset drive, departing from Rest Camp and heads up Nyonyane Mountain to Nyagato View Point, where guests enjoy sunset drinks (included) in a stunning setting. From this vantage point overlooking Mantenga Valley, guests get a bird’s eye view of the areas they have ridden or will ride and may walk the short Ridge Trail for a leg-stretch and great photos… and an often welcome break from the saddle!

SLEEP-OUT ITINERARY: Spend the day riding through the ridges and valleys of Mlilwane North, enjoying panoramic views of Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa. The terrain may not allow for fast riding, but your experienced guides will find opportunities to pick up the pace and the views are worth it. You can choose between a full-day ride with a saddlebag lunch or split it into a morning and afternoon ride, returning to camp for lunch. Some groups prefer a morning ride and a laid-back afternoon at camp.

Overnight at EmaSomini Fly Camp.

DAY 5 - LODGE-BASED ITINERARY / SLEEP-OUT ITINERARY

Lodge-Based Itinerary: This morning you’ll head out on a 3 hour trail ride, before coming back to camp for lunch. This 3 hour ride explores the eastern slopes of Nyonyane, climbing up to Mantenga View Point, and on to just below Execution Rock, revealing its monumental beauty. Once again, the ride differs, winding up through granite boulders above the old tin mines, climbing the aloe-topped foothill and dropping down to the Usushwana River, returning home along the forested roads. This ride offers fun canters and slow climbs.

In the afternoon, you’ll have the chance for another ride, or you can choose to walk, cycle or just relax.

Sleep-Out Itinerary: Have breakfast in camp and then pack up for a full-day ride (4-5 hours) back to Mlilwane Rest Camp, with a saddlebag lunch along the way. You will pass beautiful vantage points and enjoy some winding fun canters along the way home.

Once back at Mlilwane Rest Camp, you have the option for a sunset drive on the reserve before dinner. Stay overnight at Mlilwane Rest Camp.

DAY 6 - MORNING RIDE & TRANSFER TO KAMSHOLO

A leisurely breakfast marks the start of a much-appreciated slow day for horses and riders with a 2 hour morning ride. Then hop into the car where you’ll have a 2 hour drive to KaMsholo Reserve.

The first evening ride introduces guests to the lowveld. The ride winds through the bush, to a special dinner site near Camp across from the impressive Lubombo Mountains. The pace can be gentle of fast depending on the group and sightings of giraffe, zebra, ostrich and waterbuck are not uncommon. The horses are taken back to the stables while guests enjoy dinner with the setting sun. (Weather permitting)

Overnight Tinsele Camp

DAY 7 - NGUNI MUSTERING & WILDLIFE RIDE

An early start with coffee and rusks, hopping into the saddle and heading off to find the beautiful Nguni cattle. This herd is a breeding show herd with some of the oldest and purest genes in Africa! We begin riding through the bush, with lovely trots and canters, possible giraffe and wildlife sightings while tracking the Nguni. Once located, the guides explain a few different colour and pattern combinations and impart the traditional importance of the Nguni. Then its down to business… a blow on the traditional Luveve horn, a whistle and a bleat at the cattle, as the group herds them to their Sibaya (kraal) for their daily checks. The ride varies in length and pace but usually lasts 3 hrs. The cattle are gentle and used to humans and horses, but there have been moments where a few youngsters try break the muster, and riders need to maneuver them back to the herd. Warning – do not wear your best riding gear!

Enjoy lunch back at the camp, with time for a siesta and swim.

The second afternoon/evening ride focuses on wildlife – a more gentle ride spending time with the giraffe, ostrich, kudu and other plains game. This is often a bitter sweet ride, as it marks the end of the Eswatini Riding Holiday, so guides do their best to provide a wonderful “last canter” and best giraffe sightings  to ensure lasting memories!

DAY 8 - DEPART ESWATINI

The dreaded day of departure arrives with an early breakfast. You will depart Tinsele for the airport or onwards to the Kruger National Park, Cape Town or Mkhaya Game Reserve

Day 8 - 10: OPTIONAL RHINO AND BUFFALO MHKAYA RESERVE ADD-ON

After breakfast on Day 8, take a 1hr30min transfer to the beautiful Mhkaya Game Reserve. From here enjoy two tranquil nights of game drives and walking safaris based at enchanting Stone Camp, searching for white and black rhino, buffaloes, and many other species.

Mkhaya Game Reserve: Mkhaya offers a unique and intimate safari experience, focused on encounters with some of Africa’s iconic wildlife. All travel within the reserve is guided, either by open Land Rovers or on foot, providing excellent photographic opportunities and a high chance of spotting Black Rhino in the wild – a rare sight in Africa today.

Supported by various organizations and individuals, including the World Wide Fund for Nature, the SA Nature Foundation, and generous grants, Mkhaya has managed to thrive. The reserve is self-financed through visitor revenues, conservation efforts, Nguni cattle, and other sustainable resources. The name ‘Mkhaya,’ derived from the indigenous Senegalia nigrescens tree, meaning ‘home,’ reflects its significance in Eswatini’s cultural and architectural context.

With a unique history rooted in conserving indigenous Nguni cattle, Mkhaya has evolved into a sanctuary for locally threatened and endangered species. The reserve boasts Eswatini’s only buffalo, sable antelope, Livingstone’s eland, and tsessebe populations, alongside black and white rhinos, giraffes, and roan antelopes. Intense species management within fenced areas ensures the high security necessary for the protection of endangered species.

Mkhaya, an award-winning reserve, has received recognition for its commitment to conservation and outstanding accommodations. The rhino viewing experience is likened to a mountain gorilla encounter in Central Africa. Entirely staffed and patrolled by Swazis from neighboring communities, Mkhaya has developed one of Africa’s most effective anti-poaching units. Visitors’ support is crucial for sustaining this unique international conservation effort.

A journey to Mkhaya is a journey into Real Africa – an enriching and unforgettable experience that resonates with the soul, showcasing the beauty of nature and the success of dedicated conservation efforts.

THE ACCOMMODATION

Mlilwane wildlife sanctuary’s rest camp.

7 self-catering cottages range from 2-3 bed Lontweni Rondavels to the 6-bed Shonalanga Family Cottage, all situated along the ridge overlooking the Mhlambanyati River valley always busy with nyala, zebra, blesbuck wildebeest and kudu.  Each cottage has a private braai area with outside seating to ensure the view is maximized.  The Hippo Haunt Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner overlooking a picturesque Bird pool, often with hippo and crocodile.  Breakfast and dinner are typically buffets, while lunches are a la carte.

FLY CAMPING

The camping is as comfortable as rustic can be – intent on enjoying nature with a little roughing it! Camps are set up in secluded spots with incredible views. Canvas dome tents are used with canvas bedrolls, complete with pillow, mattress, sheets, duvets or sleeping bags. A camp shower and pit latrine are conveniently positioned.

TINSELE CAMP

Tinsele Camp has eight chalets situated in the valley 1,2 kilometres from the main building. Entabeni Lodge has a communal pool and conference facilities.  The chalets are situated in typical lowveld bush surroundings abundant with freely roaming Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Nyala, Impala and Ostrich.  Each chalet comprises of an open plan upstairs room, which can sleep two people and a downstairs room that also sleeps two people.  There is an en-suite bathroom downstairs.  Each room has air-conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities and a viewing deck.

THE DESTINATION

The Kingdom of Eswatini is one of Africa’s smallest countries, smaller even than South Africa’s Kruger National Park. Despite its size, Eswatini has incredible biodiversity, due to the ever-changing topography – from mountain highlands to savanna lowlands within a stretch of 130km. One of the world’s last true monarchies, Eswatini is known for its stunning scenery, friendly Swazi people and very relaxed way of life.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses in Eswatini are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • The horses are viewed as partners in the mountains, to be respected and assisted while they carry us on our journey
  • The horses run as a herd, as we believe this goes a long way to creating happy, versatile horses.
  • The herd is split into 3 groups with one group being off every week. This way they have less chance of becoming stale at work, and they socialize with the entire herd, translating to easy trailing
  • The horses are rotated between paddocks on the farm, all of which are shared with wildlife which makes its way in. On any given day, there are nyala, zebra, wildebeest, warthog and blesbuck in our paddocks, making the horses more accepting of wildlife

Please let us know if you have any more questions about this.

kamsholo bushveld safaris in eswatini is located in the

Mkhaya Game Reserve

Mkhaya Game Reserve, a private reserve, located between Manzini and Big Bend, is Eswatini’s (Swaziland’s) most exclusive safari retreat. Here you leave your vehicle behind to join an expert private guide for game drives and bush walks. You then dine beneath the stars, before drifting off to sleep in your chalet to the noises of the night.

Big Game Parks acquired Mkhaya in 1979 in order to protect the country’s last indigenous Nguni cattle. As the reserve expanded so did its ambitions. Today it is a sanctuary for endangered species and home to other large mammals that once roamed Eswatini freely. White rhinos are common and black rhinos, though more elusive, are still often seen. You should also find giraffe, zebra, hippo and warthog, plus Eswatini’s only herd of buffalo. Roan, sable and tsessebe are among the rarer antelope, with wildebeest, kudu, impala and nyala all abundant. Leopards are only occasional visitors, but you may hear spotted hyenas at night and crocodiles are often seen lounging around the main waterhole. Back in camp the excellent birdlife includes such specials as narina trogon, pink-throated twinspot and crested guineafowl, while nyala and even a few shy suni browse around the camp. After dinner listen for the fragile whistle of fiery-necked nightjars, the unearthy shriek of greater bushbabies and the whoop of spotted hyenas.

Tracking rhinos on foot at Mkhaya is as thrilling as anywhere in Africa. White rhinos are generally approachable and the guides may take you extremely close. Black rhinos are more nervous and aggressive, so tracking them can be an adrenaline-charged affair. Bush walks are not just about big game, but offer a full immersion in the sights, sounds and textures of the bush. Expect to learn about everything from the air-conditioning of a termite mound to the contents of a hyena’s droppings. Afterwards, watching wildlife from a vehicle may seem like watching it on TV.
