Hole in the Mountain Farm – Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple

  • Staff review
  • Photos ( 36 )

Taking a tour at Hole in the Mountain Farm allows you to truly experience what it's like on a pineapple farm in Hawaii. Owners Jude and Paul allow you to see what it's like behind the scenes and the taste of a fresh Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple will not be something that you soon forget.

If you love to eat pineapple, are interested in supporting local businesses in Hawaii, and want to learn more about the process of planting and harvesting pineapple, you must take a tour of Hole in the Mountain Farm while visiting Kauai. This is a working farm and they offer tours on Thursdays only at 10 a.m.

Reservations are required in advance by email. Include the date and number of people wanting to participate. After this, owners Jude and Paul Huber will reply to you with a confirmation and directions to the farm. The cost of the tour is $85 for adults, $45 for preteen children, and free for children four and under. Payment will be collected on the day of the tour and credit cards are accepted.

There are a limited amount of people that will be accepted for each tour and they often fill up, so reserve your spot early. As a point of reference, the farm is located in Moloaa, which is a small town between Anahola and Kilauea. It’s about a 30-minute drive north of the Lihue Airport or a 30-minute drive south of Hanalei.

The tour guides and owners at Hole in the Mountain Farm, Jude and Paul have a great sense of humor, are friendly, and are very knowledgeable about pineapple. During the tour, participants will get to walk through some of the fields, hear about the farm, talk about the history of pineapple in Hawaii, and learn all about growing pineapple.

The Hole in the Mountain Farm is home to more than 250,000 Kauai Sugarloaf White Pineapple plants and the guide will show you plants that are in all stages of development. You will get to see the red heart stage, the flowering stage, immature fruit, and mature fruit. If Mother Nature cooperates, each participant will be able to harvest a small Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple from the field. This will be yours to keep and take home. Participants will also be able to plant their own Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple in a newly prepared field.

The tour guide will harvest some ripened pineapples so that everyone can experience the taste of freshly harvested pineapple. Nothing compares to this experience, especially since this pineapple is unique. It is sweet, low in acid, nearly white-colored, and tender, not fibrous. You can even eat the core. It might be difficult to appreciate regular grocery store pineapple after this experience, but don’t let that worry stop you.

At the end of the Hole in the Mountain Farm tour, everyone will receive a Paulie’s Pineapple Phrostie. This is a frozen delight that is made of 100% Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple. It tastes much like soft-serve ice cream. You will also have the chance to further support the farm by purchasing some other items, such as t-shirts, tank tops, dehydrated Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple, Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple salsa, and jam made by Monkeypod jam.

Keep in mind that it’s not natural for pineapples to grow in all stages year-round. The owners have manipulated the process to allow for this, but sometimes Mother Nature does not cooperate. Even if not all stages are available to be viewed or there is not fresh pineapple at the moment, the tour is still well worth the experience.

Insider Tips: -You can have fresh Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple shipped to your home in the United States from Hole in the Mountain Farm. -With an encyclopedic knowledge of pineapple, Jude can answer all of your burning questions about the fruit, so come prepared.

Regenerative Farm & Food Experience

Monday through Friday

See our Trip Advisor Reviews!

The experience.

Quickly becoming a favorite for visitors and locals alike and as written about in  Cosmopolitan , Forbes and AFAR . Common Ground's Farm and Food Experience offers a showcase of what grows on Kauai in our regenerative food forest: A collection of exotic and delicious foods brought to Hawai`i from all corners of the globe. Coffee, pineapple, tree tomato, kava, mamak'i, heart of palm, papaya, bananas, and more! More importantly it demonstrates a model for how food can be grown in harmony(regeneratively) with nature, planted in concert so there is no need for imported fertilizers and pesticides.

We discuss why Hawai'i shouldn't need to import 85+% of its food on a boat and what a robust local food system can do for communities everywhere. We believe a meal on Kauai should be unique and represent the abundance, flavors and cultures of the island. The tour concludes with a family style meal to savor and enjoy while celebrating the delicious diversity that exists on Kauai all while exploring our mission here at Common Ground. 100% Island sourced because it should be, from the cooking oil to the seasonings. Feel free to grab beer or wine from the bar to relax into a perfect island evening in a beautiful tropical farm setting.

We welcome children of all ages!

Adults - $120 | Kids 6-12 - $65 | Kids under 6 Free

To make the experience accessible and have greater impact on the people who rely on the food systems everyday, we provide a discount to people residing on the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaii State Resident use code - kamaaina. Must present Hawaii Drivers Licenses at check in.

Give a regenerative experience!

Fabulous time at Common Ground - Our visit to Common Ground was a highlight of our time in Kauai. The farm tour was super interesting/informative and the meal that followed was absolutely delicious

Initially we were a bit apprehensive about so many new and different foods sourced right from our tour and the land. I have to say it was one of the best meals we had while in Kauai.

My husband and I rate this experience as the thing we enjoyed the very most about our trip to Kauai . It was so informative , thought provoking and they furnished a delightful meal.

The Common Grounds farm and food tour was amazing and exceeded expectations . Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and the dinner the chef made was so delicious!! Don’t miss out on this amazing experience!

Pineapple Farms in Hawaii

When you think about Hawaiian fruit, what comes to mind first? For most of us, it’s the pineapple!

Just like attending a luau, or taking a surf lesson,  touring pineapple farms is a Hawaii bucket list item.

Pineapples are my favorite fruit, and it was so much fun to put together this list of pineapple farm tours in Hawaii. Let’s explore pineapple farms on Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.

Why are there pineapples in Hawaii?

Before we talk about the pineapple farm tours, let’s talk about why Hawaii has pineapples in the first place.

Pineapples are not native to the Hawaiian islands. So, how did they get here?

Legend says that a Spanish shipwreck brought pineapples to Hawaii in the 1500s. However, the earliest records of pineapples being grown in Hawaii did not happen until the late 1700s.

Don Francisco de Paula Marin, a Spanish maritime pilot, became an advisor to Kamehameha the Great.

Marin acquired seeds from the Spanish and English for crops that he thought would do well in Hawaii. Those crops included:

How many of these items are popular Hawaiian foods today? I would say that bringing those seeds to Hawaii worked out well.

Hawaii would be a lot different without Kona coffee farms, and one of Maui’s many nicknames is the Mango Island!

pineapple farms in Hawaii

How long does it take to grow a pineapple?

It sounds made up that it takes 18 months to grow a pineapple, but it’s true! The pineapple plant takes 18-20 months to produce its first fruit. It takes approximately another 13 months for the second fruit.

Now that you know a bit more about the history of Hawaii pineapples, let’s talk about taking a tour of a pineapple farm.

Dole Plantation

When you think of pineapple farms in Hawaii, Dole Plantation is the first that comes to mind.

City life might be what you think of when you think of Oahu, but the massive Dole Plantation is only 22 miles from Honolulu.

Admission to the Dole Plantation is free, but you can take a tour of the Plantation Garden for an additional fee. This fee is $7.25 for adults, $6.50 for children, and children under 4 are free.

Can you buy Dole While at the Dole Plantation?

YES! You can buy Dole Whip at the Dole Plantation. You can also buy whole pineapples and have them shipped home.

Are they the same Dole Pineapples that you could buy in a grocery store at home? Probably. Is it fun, anyway? Yes.

Is the Dole Plantation a must-do? I wouldn’t say it’s a must-do, but if you’re only visiting Oahu and want to tour a pineapple farm, I would definitely check it out.

If you’re planning a vacation in Oahu, here are 10 things to do in Waikiki . You might also want to check out the best luau on Oahu , another must-do while you’re on the island.

Maui Pineapple Tour

Located in Hali’imaile, you can take a pineapple farm tour in Maui’s beautiful upcountry. In their own words:

At Maui Pineapple Tours, our passion is to share the history, culture, and hard work that goes into producing this iconic fruit.

Guests travel through the pineapple fields in an air-conditioned vehicle. Your knowledgeable guide will share the planting and harvesting techniques of the pineapple.

Your guide will also show how plantation workers still cultivate the fruit by hand. They cut their pineapples down with a machete; how cool is that?!

Your Maui Pineapple Tour will also include snacks and a boxed, airport-ready pineapple to bring home.

Tours start at $65. If you’re stuck at home but want a piece of Maui, you can even order pineapples from Maui Pineapple Tour’s website!

Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple

Located in beautiful Kilauea on the North Shore, Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple offers tours once a week on Thursdays at 10 AM.

Tours last approximately 2 hours and are $85 for adults and $45 for children. Children 4 and under are free. Reservations are required, and you will need to email them to get a reservation.

From Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple:

During the tour, we will walk through some of the fields, learn about the farm, some of the history of pineapple in the islands, and all aspects of growing pineapple.

You’ll receive a Paulie’s Pineapple Phrostie, which is made from 100% pineapples.

Is there a pineapple farm on the Big Island?

Sadly, the pineapple farm tour with Kohala Grown Farms has been closed for quite some time.

However, The Kohala Grown Market is still open in Hawi, where you can purchase fresh produce.

Even if you can’t take a farm tour, I love the little town of Hawi and would recommend that you visit and check out the Kohala Grown Market.

Since you’ll be close, you should check out Pololu Valley while you’re there.

Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple

Where to buy:.

Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple Farmer About Us Paul and Jude Huber grow extra fancy dessert pineapple and rambutan on 38 acres in Moloa'a. Fronted by Papaa Bay, the moist cooling breezes of the Hawaiian waters provide the perfect growing conditions for their extra sweet, low acid Sugarloaf pineapple that was marketed under the name Emperor's Choice after the Emperor of Japan declared it was the best pineapple he ever tasted. Paul and Jude have spent years creating a five-acre microclimate similar to the native conditions where rambutan flourishes. A big, juicy, sweet rambutan that you can't stop eating and pineapple approved by royalty, now that has to be good. Farm Fresh Products:

Pineapple express.

The Pineapple Express train was originally built in England by Severn Lamb. It is driven via diesel motor and hydraulic pump, very similar to a bulldozer. The engine and train is modeled after an 1870 design 4-4-0 with tender. It has four passenger cars.

OHANA EXPRESS

Our fourth and newest train, The Ohana Express, was also built in China by Hangzhou Trains Equipment Co., Ltd. It is our newest work horse. Its drive is Diesel Electric similar to full size trains operating all over the United States. The locomotive is an 0-6-0 with separate tender. It hauls three passenger cars, also manufactured by Hangzhou Trains Equipment Co., Ltd.

LADY LIBERTY

The Lady Liberty train arrived in the islands in 2003 and was designed as a replica of a Mason Bogey 0-4-4T, originally manufactured by Mason Machine Works in Taunton, Massachusetts in 1883. This particular model was popular in the early 1900’s due to its ability to run on 3′ gauge tracks on hills and over sharp curves. They were used all over the United States in mining, logging and short-line passenger service.

ALOHA EXPRESS

The Aloha Express train was built in China by Hangzhou Trains Equipment Co., Ltd. Its drive is Diesel Electric similar to full size trains operating all over the United States. How to Visit a Pineapple Farm in Hawaii

Pineapple farms are not hard to visit at all. Each has its own requirements and age groups for the tours.

The Dole Plantation does not offer tickets in advance. Some tours stop here during a circle island tour , for instance, but most often, you simply order your ticket at the stand when you arrive.

There are tours all throughout the day, so you should be able to get enough tickets for your entire family.

The Maui Gold Pineapple Tour is available to preorder , so you can plan your trip ahead of time and reserve those tickets! This way, you can better plan your Maui itinerary. Be sure to reserve your tickets early enough, because this is something you don’t want to miss out on!

You also have to reserve your spot on the Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple Farm . This is done by emailing them how many are in your party to confirm there are open spots on the tour. You will then pay when you arrive. Currently, there is no other way to reserve tickets for this farm.

Choose which tour you want to visit depending on which island you are staying on. If you can reserve tickets in advance, be sure to do so. If not, plan the rest of your trip and then fill it in where you don’t already have another tour.

The Maui pineapple tour is advertised for children ages three and up. Unfortunately, if you are traveling with a baby, they cannot come on the tour. You will ride a tour bus with air conditioning through the Maui Gold pineapple fields.

With every tour, you will get a free pineapple ! Eat it during your vacation, or take it on the airplane back home.

During the tour, guides will teach you about the farm’s history, along with planting and harvesting the pineapples. The Maui Gold pineapple tour stops throughout so you can get out and explore the farm.

The Kauai pineapple farm is in Moloaa, close to the lighthouse. What is special about this farm is that your tour guides will be the owners of the farm, Jude and Paul Huber! You will also be walking through the farm as you take this tour, so bring your walking shoes.

During this pineapple farm tour, you will see 250,000 pineapple plants. From these, you should be able to see each stage of the pineapple growing, which is pretty awesome to see up close.

Kauai Pineapple Plantation Tour: Image of a boy picking a pineapple at a KAuai pineapple farm

If the conditions are right, you can even harvest your own pineapple to keep ! This is the only tour that actually does this.

Not only will you taste the pineapples during this trip and potentially harvest your own, but you also get to leave your mark and plant a pineapple right on the farm! At the end of your tour, you get to eat a delicious Paulie’s Pineapple Phrostie, which is only made from pineapples!

Is the Kauai Pineapple Plantation Worth It?

This pineapple plantation tour is one of the best pineapple farms in Hawaii, so if you are vacationing on Kauai, be sure to visit this farm.

Not only will you experience the farm firsthand, but you can also harvest your own pineapple and plant one too! No other farm currently offers this.

It includes spectacular views of the ocean, coastline, mountains, and valleys. The waters that originate near the top of Mount Wai’ale’ale, one of the wettest spots in the world, are channeled through ditches and tunnels hand-dug by plantation workers over a century ago!

If you want to get off the beaten track, don’t miss this exclusive Kaua’i backcountry tubing tour. From start to finish, we take you on an amazing, fun-filled journey that you’re not likely to forget. Our customers tell us time and time again that our tours were the highlight of their vacation and often return for more of our tropical adventures.

Hawaii Pineapple Season

Everyone wants a fresh Hawaii pineapple and now is the time to get one, because it’s the height of pineapple season. I was reminded of this during our sunrise beach walk as hubby and I walked past two young girls who were standing with their faces absorbed in their smart phones. Tucked between them on the sand sat a small pineapple about the size of my husband’s fist. On Kauai, pineapples are no longer commercially grown on a large scale. Kilohana Plantation grows on about 1-acre specifically for their Luau Kalamaku as well as Gaylord’s , the onsite restaurant.  You can purchase fresh Kauai grown pineapples at mom-and-pop stores such as Banana Joe’s Fruit Stand and Living Foods Market . They’re also sold at road side stands, but mostly you’ll find them tucked along shaded tables at Kauai farmers markets .

There are two types of Hawaiian pineapples. “Smooth Cayenne” is the dominant cultivar that’s commercially grown. They are the familiar gold-colored pineapples that are sweet, juicy and acidic. With tender and low-acid flesh, “Sugarloaf” pineapples are a luxurious summertime treat. They are rare and command prices of up to $4.50 a pound. You may reel at this price, but once you have a taste, you’ll want one, no matter the cost. These pineapples are so special, they were featured at last month’s private tasting with chef Jean Marie Josselin during our monthly  Royal Coconut Coast Kauai Food Tour .

Stories vary as to the origin of white pineapple in Hawaii. Paul Huber, a Kauai-based Sugarloaf pineapple farmer, says plantation workers on Lanai get the credit. While harvesting in the field, workers found a natural variation of Smooth Cayenne with pale flesh. They valued the tender flesh, and because of its syrupy –sweet taste, they called it Sugarloaf. Field hands brought the unwanted plants home and planted them in gardens. It was never mass-produced because the fragile pineapple complicated commercial production. “You drop it once and it’s mush,” says Paul, who grows more than 60,000 Sugarloaf pineapples. Paul’s wife Jude sells them at the Kauai Culinary Market and Kauai Community Market .

Plants are spiky bushes that grow up to 3 feet tall. In the center, a single pineapple stands like fruit-on-a-stick. It takes 18 months for the first pineapple to grow. Farmers can harvest two more pineapples before the plant is finished. Pineapple season begins around mid-June, peaks in mid-July and tapers off in September. At Hole in the Mountain Farm, selective forcing on a weekly basis enables Paul to grow and sell pineapples year-round.

Use your senses when selecting ripe pineapple. Smooth Cayenne’s rough skin turns completely gold and a sweet pineapple smell comes off in delightful waves. Sugarloaf is a little trickier because it may or may not have a noticeable smell. Look for skin color that ranges from burgundy to deep green and bulging eyes that are yellow at the center.

Discover Kauai pineapple and meet local farmers during Tasting Kauai’s one-hour farmers market class .

Sweet Sugarloaf Pineapples In Kauai

  • By Tiffany Spencer, REALTOR (S)
  • March 5, 2020

Peerless in sweetness, the Kauai Sugarloaf Pineapple has been said to taste like cotton candy. These tasty treats are so easy to eat, even the core is edible – being lower in acidity and less fibrous than yellow pineapples certainly make them an island favorite.
