BETHESDA, Md. -- HMSHost Corp. said it will provide travelers with trusted brand-name food, beverage and retail service in two new travel plazas along the Maine Turnpike.

HMSHost won a contract extension from the Maine Turnpike Authority in March 2006, and began construction last September. Now, the Kennebunk North and South Travel Plazas are open to the public, offering a variety of choices including Starbucks and Z Market.

Construction on the remaining outlets will be completed within the month, the company said.

"The construction of these new travel plazas also created local jobs, said Paul E. Violette, Maine Turnpike Authority executive director.

The Kennebunk North Travel Plaza, located at Mile 25 in Kennebunk, will include Starbucks Coffee, Hershey's Ice Cream featuring Tropicool Smoothies, Burger King and Popeyes Chicken. The Kennebunk South Travel Plaza, also located at Mile 25 in Kennebunk, will feature the same vendors and will offer Sbarro in place of Popeyes.

Both locations offer Z Market, a convenience store with a selection including fresh, hot and cold gourmet foods to go, in addition to convenience products, travel items and everyday essentials. Z Market has its own deli case, featuring Fresh Attractions sandwiches, sandwich wraps, salads and sides. Individually wrapped, all are freshly made and easily transportable for consumption on the go. An extensive beverage selection features favorite brands such as bottled Figi and Vitamin waters, Starbucks Frappuccino, Red Bull and others.

Z Market also offers items that travelers may require including regional and national publications, bestselling novels, digital camera accessories, memory flash cards and more.

The renovated and rebuilt travel plazas feature up-to-date designs to better accommodate motorists' needs, making the Turnpike travel experience more convenient and enjoyable, such as brighter, larger restrooms; a food court environment with atrium seating, an outdoor patio, multiple entrances and exits and increased parking for both cars and trucks.

C.N. Brown gas stations are also now open for business at both plazas.

Bethesda, Md.-based HMSHosta wholly owned subsidiary of Autogrill S.p.Aprovides restaurants and shops in travel venues. It operates in more than 100 motorway travel plazas throughout North America.

Naaa, they failed in expectations. The ladies restroom was in terrible condition and smelled something awful. The inside was all under construction. The outside needed lawn care. The best thing about the stop was my interaction with the young lady at Duncan Donuts, she was really sweet and took my order text book style.

The Kennebunk Travel Plaza is my go-to stop when I'm driving south long distances. The bathrooms are always clean and there are plenty of food options. I'm partial to the Sbarro, but I also like getting sandwiches/wraps at the convenience store. The prices are a bit expensive, which is really my only criticism. This is also a convenient stop to refuel for me since I can usually make it to the Merritt Parkway in CT on a full tank and then there are plenty of stations at those rest stops.

We stopped here for a bathroom break and a coffee refill on our way to York. The service plaza on Maine's turnpike is helpful because it's way easier to get gas here than get off the highway, pay a toll, search around, get back on the highway and pay another toll. This is easy. The plaza has a Starbucks, Burger King, pizza place and a convenience store market. The Citgo station here is not exorbitant and they don't gouge the folks who are "trapped" on turnpike. A Tesla Supercharger with eight or so stations is available. Clean restrooms and masks are required but they didn't seem to enforce it. Lots of seating inside and a cute lighthouse in the center atrium. There is a separate plaza with different services on the northbound side. They are not connected. [Review 14901 overall, 403 of 2021, number 83 in Maine.]

I visited this travel plaza late Friday night over Memorial Day weekend. Burger King was the only place open which seems typical of most travel plazas after 11pm but during Memorial Day weekend, I was expecting more options. The bathrooms were a little sketchy and it was dirty, I didn't see a janitor in sight. Near Burger King, the floor was extremely wet with some puddles and I almost slipped. It wasn't busy at all so I'm surprised by how unkept this plaza was. Convenient, absolutely. However, it was a bit gross.

kennebunk north travel plaza

Nice little travel stop along the road. Stopped for some souvenirs but the selection was quite limited. Starbucks was closed by 5pm and the other shops seems to be closing or getting ready to close. Restrooms were clean.

Food court

Busy and a little crowded. Not too many food choixes, especially since Annje Mays sweet cafe was closed. Burger King was the main spot, the store offered a few things but it seems everyone wanted to shop there so the line was long.

Overall a decent stop. After copious amounts of driving in my day, and still miles to go, I needed to get out and stretch my legs. I was very happy to see this place on my way. It's funny, in the future when we speak of an oasis, this is what some will think about. I jumped out of my car and stretched before I ventured in here. I wasn't really looking for anything food wise because I had already eaten, but that did not stop me from looking around inside. I have to say the facilities here are well maintained. Decently clean and enough stalls to accommodate as many people as possible. After using the facilities I did want to get a water to hold me over until I got back to where I came from. I didn't want to go to any of the fast food places so I went to the store portion. I do have to echo what one other reviewer had stated. It's kind of morbid to see live lobsters for sale at a rest stop. Like, hmmmm, I think I'll take one of those to go with me for my road trip.

kennebunk north travel plaza

These stops are clean the bathrooms are always clean when I've been through. Food, if you need it and we'll just a place to take a break, gas up your vehicle. We even have a walking trail connected if you want to get some exercise. Next time your on 95 southbound give it a try.

Photo of Jake A.

It's a rest stop. Bathrooms are somewhat clean. I stop in once a month or so. Never dirty, never super clean. Half of the places don't seem to be open. Starbucks-sometimes. BK usually. But long lines. Sbarro-can't always tell. Gas is priced at local prices. Not priced up $.20 or more per gallon like is usual. Lots of parking-but people don't pay attention and just walk anywhere. There are electric charging stations. Gas pumps kind of suck-not a lot of space to pass others. Hoses aren't long so you have to find a pump that is on the same side as your tank. Good for the necessities but don't expect much else.

Photo of Doc L.

This is a great place for a pit stop!! I frequently stop here and it's bathrooms are always clean and well maintained!! It would be better if they had additional choices of places to eat but otherwise this is an above Average pit stop and also has lots of EV charging stations if you need one!!

Kennebunk South Travel Plaza

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Nice road trip stop. The Maine Turnpike. Stand up. Stretch. Gander through the plaza. Guilty pleasures all around! Eat Popeye's Shrimp Po' Boy, best fast food item I can remember in recent times. Hersheys Ice Cream, get a thick creamy shake. Spacious public restroom.

kennebunk north travel plaza

Gassed up, went to the Burger King for an early lunch. It was the usual fast-food fare, easily obtained.

This is a fine plaza to stop for a rest. The restrooms were clean, and there were multiple food choices if you are hungry. There are plenty of places to park.

Totally disgusted that the state of Maine would let their service plaza get that bad! Women’s restroom had no toilet paper!! Stalls were filthy with no seat covers and to top it off there wasn’t any soap in the dispensers!! The amount of money we... Mainers pay for tolls we deserve better! Maine Turnpike Authority get on it!! More

This review is not about the travel plaza, which is fine and I have no problem with it. This is about the lobster truck parked next to the building. On our way back home we decided to grab a lobster roll. DON'T DO IT. It... was over priced and very skimpy. The people working in the truck had to ask us several times about our order. We really didn't know if they understood us. We paid $75 for 3 meals, no chips or drink. Just wanted to warm all those travelers in Maine that this is not worth the price. There is much better lobster to be had in the state. I felt they were capitalizing on the Bean name. More

My husband & I stopped there coming & going for a load to be picked up. The food was good, the coffee was great, & it was so quiet at bedtime.

Food good .dissapointed they and adjacent Burger King were serving people unmasked.I wont stop there again

Off the Maine turnpike but by no means turnpike food or atmosphere. From the building itself to the service and food you will be pleasantly surprised.

Traveling north this is a good place to take a break and rest. We've done it several times over the years. We have found it to be clean, well maintained and safe. They have several food offerings as well, although we do favor Popeye's.

Stopped in for breakfast and was very happy with the gentlemen behind the counter at Burger King. They waited on us in a very professional and friendly manner. Got our orders quickly and accurately with a friendly good morning. The breakfast sandwiches where fresh and... delicious. Thank you Clarence. More

As a means of filling the body with calories, this site is an excellent choice. Pizza and burgers are on offer with healthier choices more limited.

This is a very busy rest stop so maybe that is why the person at the Burger King was very overcome when our bus people stopped for a quick breakfast . He was kind of rude and even ignored our meals that were sitting on... the heaters . We had to ask him to get our food. More

This is a good place to visit if you need a bathroom and/or food break. While there is not a big or wide food selection one can find something somewhat satisfying. Just expect a lot of people.

kennebunk north travel plaza

Stopped at the Kennebunk plaza going North and grabbed a crab roll. DONT DO IT. It was watery as if it had been frozen and no mayo, and black pepper on top. Not worth $4 let alone $16. I’ve had a lobster roll in the... past and it was the same. Don’t do it. More

  • Guide to Russia

What is the history of Gorky Park?

  • In the pre-revolutionary period, Gorky Park was a city dump and wasteland, which was cleared in 1923 to host the All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition
  • In 1928, a huge park was planned on the former site of the exhibition. It would not just be a place of leisure, but a place to proudly display Soviet culture and daily life
  • Gorky Park has remained a cultural hub ever since, and has been renovated and added to over the years to make it one of Moscow’s top attractions today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park is the most famous park of Moscow, created during the Soviet period as a hub for relaxation and cultural activities. The park is beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, who visit in all seasons to stroll, enjoy sports, admire the park’s attractions, and attend cultural events. Gorky Park is the central part of an ensemble of four green spaces – Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve – which curve around the southern bank of the Moskva River to the south-west of Moscow city centre. Here you may spend some time and enjoy nature and contemprary art during your vacation in Moscow .

History of Gorky Park

Imperial russia.

In the 17th century, the eastern bank of the Moskva River beyond Moscow’s city limits was home to floodplain meadows, where palace horses grazed. From the mid-1850s, events such as cockfights, fistfights, and races were held here, and by the 20th century this area had become a city dump where the unemployed and homeless people of Moscow lived, which remained this way until the Soviet period. This wasteland lay in stark contrast to the adjoining Neskuchny Sad – ‘merry garden’ – which lay to its south, an area of aristocratic country estates and elaborate gardens.

Soviet Russia

Following the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin travelled around Moscow to find a suitable site for the first All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition, which would reveal opportunities for socialist development of agriculture and industry. Lenin decided on the wasteland alongside the Moskva River, which was cleared with a programme of community work. In 1923, the exhibition began. It encompassed 250 pavilions dedicated to different themes of agriculture and industry, and was divided into thematic zones, such as villages, livestock, crops, engineering, railways, republics of the USSR, and foreign countries. The organisation of the exhibition demarcated the future layout and size of Gorky Park, and the paths, ‘zones’, and main square of the exhibition have been preserved until the present day. In March 1928, Moscow City Council decided to establish a park of culture and recreation on the site of the former exhibition, which would also encompass the Neskuchny Garden. Moscow’s residents were instrumental in the construction of the park – they voiced their desires for events spaces, physical education and leisure facilities, and gave up their weekends to build the park. The park’s main architect was Konstantin Melnikov.

Did you know? Konstantin Melnikov also helped to construct Lenin’s Mausoleum and the Rusakov Worker’s Club, one of Moscow’s Constructivist masterpieces .

Over 100,000 Muscovites flocked to the opening of the park on 12th August 1928. The brand-new park was equipped with two theatres, a cinema, nursery, reading room, restaurant and café, music stages, sports arenas, rowing boats, and even a giant helter-skelter slide. Unfortunately, because of the vast size of the crowd and the general excitement, the park was damaged and closed until September.

Did you know? The park was not named after Maxim Gorky, writer and founder of Socialist Realism, until 1933.

In 1929, Betty Glan – at the mere age of 26 – became director of the park. She decided to reconceptualise it, uniting leisure, design, and ideology with the help of Moscow’s most eminent architects, designers and artists. Over the next decade, more cultural venues were established in the park, the Pushkinskaya Embankment along the Moskva River was developed, and the landscaping of the park was carefully cultivated. Architect Alexander Vlasov was particularly influential, and won the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris for his design of Gorky Park. This period under Glan’s directorship until 1937 was known as the ‘golden age’ of Gorky Park, which became not just a place for recreation, but a public space where Soviet culture and everyday life could be proudly displayed.

Did you know? During the Second World War topical events were held in Gorky Park, such as the championship in bayonet combat, grenade-throwing competitions, and air defence training. What’s more, an exhibition of captured enemy weapons – tanks, artillery, aeroplanes, and more – was organised in Gorky Park and continually updated throughout the war.

In the post-war decades new attractions were continually added to Gorky Park. These included the majestic 24-metre triumphal arch at the entrance to the park, an astronomical observatory (which remains open today), the famous Ferris wheel (unfortunately dismantled in 2008), and a fountain with lights and music.

Russia today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Photo from  https://countryscanner.ru/

The Gorky Park ensemble continued to flourish as a centre of culture and recreation in post-Soviet Russia. The adjoining Muzeon Park of Arts was founded in 1992, and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was established in Gorky Park in 2008. The ensemble underwent serious reconstruction in 2011. Many new sports facilities were added, including centres for beach sports and extreme sports, bicycle paths and sports equipment rental hubs, and much effort was devoted to reviving original buildings, sculptures, and landscape compositions. Two years later, the embankment of the Moskva River from the southern tip of Zamoskvorechye Island all the way to Sparrow Hills was redeveloped and pedestrianised, making it possible to peacefully walk or cycle along the Moskva for many kilometres.

What can you do at Gorky Park today?

  • Explore the park and see architectural attractions, fountains, and beautiful gardens
  • Visit Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and the Gorky Park Museum
  • Go boating on the lakes and stroll down the Pushkinskaya Embankment
  • Rent bicycles or scooters, skateboard, and visit the sports centres

What can you do at Gorky Park?

Park attractions.

While exploring the treelined paths of Gorky Park, you’ll come across a number of attractions. To the west of the main entrance, near the river, is a beautiful geometric bandstand used for music and literary evenings in the Soviet period. As you head down the central alley of Gorky Park from the main entrance, you’ll see a statue of Maxim Gorky on your right, and discover the light and music fountain with its dancing jets of water – find the schedule of its performances here .

Did you know? Don’t be afraid to feed the red squirrels and birds you encounter on your walk around Gorky Park – there are even vending machines which sell special food for the animals!

The southern section of Gorky Park is occupied by the Golitsynsky Garden. In 1802, the Golitsyn Hospital was founded here as a hospital for the poor; it still adjoins Gorky Park today. Gardens were created as a relaxation place for patients, extending from the hospital building to the riverbank, and included landscaped gardens, a Chinese Bridge, and two ponds. On the riverbank is the Rotunda of the Golitsyn Hospital, which has been preserved since the 19th century. There is also a rose garden and fountain by the Bolshoi Golitsynsky Pond.

Did you know? In the Golitsynsky Garden is also located an unusual architectural monument – a public toilet designed by Alexander Vlasov in the 1930s, which is recognised as an ‘object of cultural heritage’!

Outdoor activities

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park’s extensive and varied grounds aren’t only good for walks! You can relax on the water by renting boats to sail on the Pionersky and Bolshoi Golitsynsky Ponds, or visiting the Olivkovy Beach on the Pushkinskaya Embankment to sunbathe. As well as this, you can hire bicycles, electric scooters, longboards or even roller skates to explore the park and embankments, play table tennis, visit the sports complex to play football, basketball, handball, badminton or volleyball, or visit the Vans skatepark or Nike sports centre for workouts and classes such as rooftop yoga.

Gorky Park Museum

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Visit the Gorky Park Museum, located in the left pier of the entrance arch. The current exhibition is dedicated to Gorky Park in the ‘golden age’ of the 1930s, and shows the development of Moscow’s central park through the eyes of Betty Glan. There is an observation deck on top of the arch, which offers a lovely view over the park and Moscow’s skyline.

Did you know? In the entrance arch there is also a gift shop where you can purchase balls, frisbees, blankets, and other items to enjoy your visit to Gorky Park.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

Garage Museum

Photo from  https://muzeolog.com/

In Gorky Park you will find Garage Museum, Russia’s first philanthropic institution dedicated to contemporary art, founded in 2008 by Roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova. 10 major exhibitions are hosted each year to showcase the work of established and up-and-coming artists. Also organised are a rich programme of events including curator-led excursions, workshops, masterclasses, lectures, concerts, performances, festivals, and film screenings at Garage’s outdoor cinema. Read our article about Garage Museum of Contemporary Art to learn more.

Food and drink

There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants dotted around Gorky Park, where you can stop for a quick coffee or enjoy a long meal with a view. They include the stylish lakeside café Ostrovok (Little Island) and upmarket restaurant Vremena Goda (Seasons) which serve European and Russian food, colourful lakeside Thai restaurant Lebedinoe Ozero (Swan Lake), trattoria Merkato with its huge summer terrace, restaurant Syrovarnya (Cheese Factory) with a menu focused on its homemade cheese, food-truck court Restoparking which is stylised as a drive-in café, and ice-cream and tea shop Chaynaya Vysota.

What’s nearby?

Gorky Park is bordered by Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve. This huge ensemble curves for eight kilometres along the bank of the Moskva River, providing a beautiful oasis of green in Europe’s biggest city.

Muzeon Park of Arts

Muzeon Park

Photo from  https://new-magazine.ru/

Muzeon Park of Arts is the largest open-air sculpture museum in Russia, home to 1,000 sculptures by Soviet and Russian sculptors, including those by famous artists. A large part of Muzeon is occupied by the New Tretyakov Gallery , which houses Russia’s most complete exhibition of national art from the 20th century to the present day. The pedestrianised Krymskaya Embankment which extends alongside Muzeon has recently undergone redevelopment, and is one of Moscow’s most popular spots to relax.

Neskuchny Garden

Neskuchny Garden is the oldest park in Moscow, founded in 1728 by Prince Nikita Trubetskoy, who threw fantastic festivities in his manor house and gardens – neskuchny means ‘merry’ in Russian. Many other noble families also built their country estates in this area, which became a public park and garden after being acquired by the royal family. Today, the Neskuchny Garden is home to historical buildings, fountains, and gardens from the 18th and 19th centuries, sports facilities, an open-air theatre, and a huge greenhouse which supplies flowers to Gorky Park.

Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve is a huge forest park lining the steep bank of the Moskva River and the only specially protected nature area near the city centre. It is home to ecological trails, ponds, natural springs, rare species of plants and animals, many spots for picnicking, cafes, and a mini zoo. At the bottom of the park lie the Vorobyovskaya and Andreevskaya Embankments, with promenades along the Moskva River, a beach, and piers offering boat trips. As with Gorky Park, Sparrow Hills is hugely popular for sports and outdoor activities in all seasons. A new winter sports complex with snowboarding, ice skating, and ski tracks and jumps is currently under construction. When the weather is pleasant, you can rent a bicycle to ride the 8 kilometres along the river from Muzeon to Sparrow Hills.

The best time to visit Moscow is during spring  (March-May). The temperatures will begin to creep up and the sun begins to shine for significant portions of the day. Hotel rates will also have yet to skyrocket into peak ranges!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

With so many areas to choose from, it helps to narrow it down to which suits some basic and common needs and preferences. Before we get into the meat of the article, I have a few quick suggestions of which areas you might want to consider first.

Where to stay in Moscow?

The best areas to stay in Moscow are Kitay-Gorod, Tverskoy District, Basmanny District West, Basmanny District East, Arbat District, Presnensky District East, Presnensky District West, Yakimanka District, and Ostankino District – VDNKh.

If you are visiting for the first time , or planning a shorter trip, the central neighbourhood of Kitay Gorod would be an excellent choice. You will be staying within a short walk of Moscow’s most iconic attractions including the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral.

Kitay Gorod can be expensive though. If you are trying to keep costs down, then nearby Presninsky might be the better choice. You will still be close to the central attractions, but without the premium rates for accommodation.

For Moscow’s best nightlife you should head to the vibrant Tverskoy district. This is where you will find the best bars and nightclubs in the city. You will still be staying just a short walk from the top attractions in the city.

It is worth remembering that Moscow has an excellent and extensive public transport and metro system. If you are worried that the attractions you most want to visit are in areas out of your price range, you will still be able to easily visit them via the Moscow Metro

Generally speaking, as long as you stay within the Central Administrative District, you will be able to travel between all the top attractions in just minutes.

10 Best areas to stay in Moscow for tourists:

1. kitay-gorod.

Kitay-Gorod

We will start with Kitay Gorod, a neighbourhood right at the centre of Moscow, located north of the Moskva River . Staying here will have you just a short walk away from some of Moscow City’s most famous attractions.

As one of the oldest areas in Moscow, Kitay Gorod is full of history. The streets here have a particular historic charm and character that is hard to find amongst the skyscrapers and modern buildings throughout the rest of the city.

If you are planning a romantic city break, this is an excellent location. There are so many beautiful buildings and pretty streets to walk down. The area is also known for chic bars and higher end restaurants, so you will have plenty of date venues to choose from.

One of the most defining tourist attractions of the Kitay Gorod district is Saint Basil’s Cathedral . Saint Basil’s Cathedral is probably the most iconic building in all of Russia. The unique architecture makes this building instantly recognisable to visitors from across the globe.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral is actually made up of several smaller churches or chapels. In fact, each of the beautiful domed roofs represents a different chapel. Visitors are able to enter the cathedral for a small fee, although it’s free for children under sixteen so makes for a great attraction to visit with family.

Just across from Saint Basil’s is the Moscow Kremlin . The fortified citadel is well known for being a major seat of Russian governance for centuries. The Kremlin houses numerous historic buildings, including the president’s residence and the Grand Kremlin Palace, often used to host dignitaries.

Although some areas are off limits due to security reasons, visitors are able to tour the grounds and enter various buildings within the Kremlin. The Armoury Chamber is a popular area for tourists to visit.

Located in the Armoury Tower at the south-west of the Kremlin, visitors can view various artefacts from Russia’s military history. From weapons, uniforms and armour, to even jewellery, there is plenty to look at here.

Surrounding the Kremlin are the Alexander Gardens . The beautiful, landscaped parks wind around numerous historic towers. Some of these gates and towers date back to the 14th-century. The south park stretches along the north bank of the Moskva River, making it a lovely area for a walk.

The Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral are both located just off of the Red Square . One of the most famous and historic squares in Europe, Red Square is a popular meeting place.

Lenin’s Mausoleum is a somewhat morbid but endlessly popular tourist attraction located at the Red Square. Visitors can view the embalmed body of the Bolshevik leader, which has been laying in state since his death in the 1930s.

On the opposite side of the district is Zaryadye Park . The park is home to the Zaryadye Concert Hall. If you enjoy live, instrumental music, it would be well worth checking their programme for any events taking place during your stay.

Zaryadye Park also boasts the Floating Bridge . A unique platform that extends out over the river, the ‘bridge’ is popular with tourists and locals looking to get a beautiful view of the water.

Being such a popular and central location, this area is better suited to those with a more generous budget. Kitay Gorod is better known for more luxurious hotels. You must also expect to pay a premium if you want a room with views of the historic landmarks of the district.

2. Tverskoy District

Tverskoy District

Kitay Gorod is technically located within the larger Tverskoy District, which stretches for several kilometres to the north of Moscow city centre. Known for shopping, dining, and nightlife, this is a very popular location for visitors to stay in Moscow.

If you were hoping to stay close to popular tourist attractions such as the Kremlin and Red Square , but cannot afford the steep prices of Kitay Gorod, the Tverskoy District is a great alternative too. You will still be within walking distance of great sights, without the extortionate fees.

Running through the heart of the Tverskoy district is Tverskaya Street . Tverskaya Street is the best-known street in Moscow. It is internationally renowned as an upscale shopping destination.

If you enjoy spending your vacation browsing high-end designer stores and independent boutiques, then you definitely need to visit Tverskaya Street. In addition to shopping, you can also find fashionable restaurants and chic cafes to enjoy a break between shopping sprees.

Aside from shopping and dining, there are many interesting attractions throughout the Tverskoy District. The area is particularly well known for its bustling theatre district.

The Bolshoi Theatre is the best known of the many venues in the area. The ballet and opera performances that can be enjoyed here are amongst the best and most renowned in the world.

If you have the opportunity to take in a show here, then I definitely recommend that you do. Make sure to book well in advance though, as tickets sell out quickly. Even if you will not be seeing a performance, the grand building of the theatre itself is worth stopping by to appreciate.

In addition to the iconic attractions to be found in the south of the neighbourhood, the rest of the district has plenty to see too. There is a particularly wide array of museums to enjoy throughout Tverskoy.

At the north end of the Red Square , at the very edge of Kitay Gorod, is the State Historical Museum . The beautiful, grand building houses exhibits and artefacts from throughout history. The smaller Museum of Archaeology sits just behind it, so any history fanatics will be able to get their fill of fascinating relics.

If you enjoy art, there are various galleries to take a look at. The Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Decorative , Applied and Folk Arts offer at look at two ends of the vast spectrum of Russian art and culture.

If you prefer to spend your time outside, you can head to Hermitage Park. This pretty, public garden often hosts events and fairs and even an ice-rink in the wintertime.

It is located right between the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Decorative , Applied, and Folk Arts, so you can walk through it on your way between them.

The Tverskoy District is particularly well known as the best area in Moscow for nightlife. Once you are finished enjoying dinner at one of the many top-quality restaurants in the area, you can head straight out for a night on the town.

3. Basmanny District West – Chistye Prudy

Basmanny District West – Chistye Prudy

The Basmanny district is just to the east of the central districts of Kitay Gorod and Tverskoy. Close to the city centre and its iconic attractions, but away from the worst of the crowds, Basmanny is a peaceful, residential escape.

Despite being a little outside of the most central districts, Basmanny still has some really interesting attractions. Basmanny is especially good at repurposing defunct buildings into trendy exhibition and events spaces.

Winzavod is a particularly popular example. Once a thriving wine estate, the property has been converted into a unique showroom for contemporary art.

Following the theme, a series of old warehouses has been converted into Artplay. The colourful network of studios and galleries boasts a thriving community of artists. In addition to the various artists galleries, there are also gift shops and cafes dotted around the complex.

If you are interested in the local arts scene, you should definitely visit Artplay . You can watch new works as they are produced, and even buy some pieces straight from the artists who made them. You could not find a more unique souvenir.

A particularly interesting museum to visit in this area is the Museum of emotions . Just a short walk from Artplay, the museum displays various unique exhibits designed to trigger and reflect specific emotions.

A popular location in the Basmanny District is Christye Prudy . Translating as Clean Ponds in English, this is a small but charming urban park with a pretty pond. In the summer you can enjoy feeding the local population of ducks or rent a paddle boat and enjoy a brief respite from the concrete crush of the city.

Meanwhile, in winter the pond freezes over and is transformed into a popular ice-skating rink. Christye Prudy is particularly popular for families with young children, as there is always something going on for little ones to get involved in.

If you find that Christye Prudy is too crowded, you can head to the nearby Bauman Garden. The gardens are lined with pretty flowers in the summer and host yet another ice rink in the winter.

  • Best luxury hotel: Mamaison All-Suites Spa Hotel Pokrovka
  • Best mid-range hotel: Design Hotel Senator
  • Best budget hotel: Pokrovka 6 Hotel

4. Basmanny District East

The east side of the Basmanny district is even further out from the city centre. Primarily a residential neighbourhood, this is an ideal location if you a looking for a quieter, more laid-back district to relax away from the crowds.

Aside from being a peaceful escape from your fellow travellers at the end of a busy day sightseeing, Basmanny East is also a more typical representation of everyday life in Moscow. If you are looking to experience life like a local, and mingle with the Moscow natives, this would be a good place to stay.

Another perk of being just a little bit removed from the city centre, is the noticeable reduction in the cost of accommodation. If you have a smaller budget to spend on your hotel or hostel, east Basmanny will help to stretch your cash.

If you are worried that being further out will make sightseeing more hassle, remember that Moscow has a wonderful public transport system. There are plenty of metro stations across Basmanny. While you may not be within walking distance of the major landmarks, they’re only a short train ride away.

For lazy days, when you can’t be bothered with travelling to and from the city centre, there are a couple of things to see and do in Basmanny east itself. The National Sports Museum boasts interesting exhibits on the history and development of Russian sports.

Alternatively, head to nearby Lefortovo Park . The leafy family park and garden boasts several pretty ponds to explore and wander around. There is even a cosy café amongst the trees for when you get tired of walking.

  • Best luxury hotel: Moss Boutique Hotel
  • Best mid-range hotel: Gregory Hotel
  • Best budget hotel: Holiday Inn Express Moscow

5. Arbat District

Arbat District, a fashionable neighbourhood in Moscow

Arbat is one of the most fashionable neighbourhoods in Moscow. Part of the district is home to some of Moscow’s oldest, most historic buildings and streets. Meanwhile, another part of the district was once a busy warehouse and factory quarter.

Both aspects of this diverse neighbourhood are now combined into one of the quirkiest communities around. If you enjoy appreciating historical beauty whilst indulging in top quality contemporary shopping and dining, this is the area for you.

Arbat District is also another of the most central districts of Moscow. The west end of Arbat is comfortably within walking distance of the many iconic attractions to be found in central Moscow like the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral.

At the heart of the Arbat District is the eponymous Arbat Street . Arbat Street is well known for being the oldest pedestrian street in Moscow. It is a popular tourist destination, so you can be sure to find plenty of souvenir shops where you can pick up gifts and trinkets to take back home with you.

Alternatively, relax at one of the many cafes that line the streets. Their streetside dining terraces will give you a comfortable seat from which to appreciate the many street artists that perform along Arbat Street.

Arbat is also known for being a hub of excellent restaurants. With a range of international cuisine on offer, you’re sure to find something to suit whatever you happen to be craving. With so much world-class dining to enjoy, it is no wonder that this is a favourite neighbourhood for the Moscow elite.

To the south of Arbat District you can find the popular Pushkin Museum . Technically, there are two, the State Pushkin Museum, and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

The State Pushkin Museum displays historical artefacts from around the world. The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts houses a varied collection of sculptures, statues, and paintings. Both also host temporary exhibitions, so it is worth checking what’s on during your stay in Moscow.

Just a short walk from the State Pushkin Museum is the Moscow Museum. The museum of Moscow houses various artefacts from throughout Moscow’s history. The museum often hosts events which offer a great opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the city.

If you are travelling into Moscow via Vnukovo International Airport, Arbat might be a good choice for you. Although the airport is some ways outside of Moscow city, the Aeroexpress train connects the airport directly to Kievskiy Train Terminal.

T he Kievskiy Train Terminal is just across the river from Arbat. Just a short taxi or subway ride away, you can be at your hotel in minutes. With the express train only taking 35-minutes, that means you can be out of the airport and at your hotel in under an hour.

Ki evskiy Station is also one of the principal international train stations in Moscow. As such, if you plan to be travelling to Moscow by train, you may be coming into this terminal. This would again make Arbat particularly convenient for you.

Between the convenient location of public transport links, and being within walking distance of central Moscow, Arbat is a really good choice for anyone planning a shorter stay. You will be able to massively reduce time spent travelling between your hotel and transport or attractions.

  • Best luxury hotel:   Lotte Hotel Moscow
  • Best mid-range hotel:   AZIMUT Hotel Smolenskaya Moscow

6. Presnensky District East – Patriarchie Ponds

Presnensky District East – Patriarchie Ponds

The Presnensky district is immediately east of the central district of Tverskoy. Although it is outside of the city centre, Presnensky upholds Moscow’s standard of outstanding museums.

The Moscow Planetarium is one of the most popular museums in Moscow, both with tourists and locals. Boasting a variety of exhibits focused on a wide range of space and astronomy related topics, the hands on, interactive displays are a great opportunity to get your kids interested in science.

The planetarium also has its own observatory and a 4D cinema. Events are regularly held here, so it is definitely worth checking to see if there is anything you would be interested in seeing during your trip.

Moscow Zoo is just around the corner from the Planetarium. The zoo houses over 8000 animals and works to educate adults and children alike on conservation efforts to preserve the species in the wild.

If you are tired of schlepping around zoos and museums, you can head over for a rest by Patriarchie Ponds. The Patriarch’s Pond, as it would be known in English, is a large ornamental pond surrounded by a leafy public park.

Surrounded by comfortable lawns and numerous chic cafes, Patriarchie Ponds is a very popular spot for locals to relax in the fresh air. If you want to kick back like a true Muscovite, this is the place to do it.

Located north of Arbat, right by the Moskva River , is the Russian Federation Government House. The grand, columned building is the primary office for the Russian government and prime minister. If you enjoy visiting political landmarks, then this is certainly worth a visit.

It is also worth noting that several foreign embassies are located in the area, including the U.S. embassy. It may be helpful to keep a note of your embassy’s location, just on the off chance you have need of it.

If you want to get in a bit of cross-cultural appreciation, you can visit the S tate Museum of Oriental Art . The museum houses exhibits and artefacts from across the breadth of Asia.

If you are looking to where to stay in Moscow without breaking the bank, Presnensky is a fantastic option. It is just far enough out of the city centre that rates for accommodation are typically lower. However, it isn’t so far out that it would be difficult or time consuming to travel between attractions.

7. Presnensky District West

Presnensky District West – Moscow City Skyscraper

The west end of the Presnensky district is further away from the city centre. Whilst there are fewer tourists out this way, that doesn’t mean that it is particularly quiet. There are a lot of modern business developments and skyscrapers springing up.

If anything, this is one of the most modern areas of the city. With less of a historical vibe, the west side of Presninsky feels more like the mega city that Moscow is.

This area is home to Moscow’s tallest skyscraper, the Federation Tower . Visitors can enjoy stunning views of Moscow from the incredibly high viewing platform. Those who don’t like heights can enjoy the various shops and eateries on the lower levels.

The Federation Tower is due to lose its title soon though. Planning permission has been granted for the even taller Moscow City Skyscraper to be built just a short walk away. The new supertall skyscraper is due to be completed in 2024

If you need a break from all the towering skyscrapers, you can head along the river to Park Krasnaya Presnya. Between the wooded park and pretty, landscaped gardens, you will soon feel rejuvenated and ready to head back into the concrete and glass jungle.

Alternatively, if you need a little more time enjoying nature, you can head to the neighbouring Park Krasnogvardeyskiye Prudy . Here you can relax by a series of pretty ponds.

If you really want to appreciate some magnificent architecture, you should head to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception . The largest cathedral in all of Russia, this is a definite must see for anyone visiting Moscow.

The piercing spires are very different to Moscow’s other, more famous domed cathedral. The way they tower into the sky is impressively reminiscent of the newer skyscrapers springing up in the surrounding area.

Being further out from the city centre, prices for accommodation are generally lower than elsewhere in Moscow. As such, this is a popular location for travellers trying to keep costs low.

Don’t forget, even though this neighbourhood is further from the city centre, the Moscow transport system will ensure that getting around all the must-see attractions will still be super quick and easy.

9. Ostankino District – VDNKh

Ostankino District – VDNKh

The Ostankino, or Ostankinsky, District is the only area on this list located outside of the central administrative district of Moscow. Several kilometres north of Moscow centre, the Ostankino District will be of particular interest to anyone who has a passion for science and technology.

A large portion of the east side of the Ostankino District is dominated by the VDNHk Exhibition Centre. Also known as the All-Russian Exhibition Centre , the VDNHk is a network of parks, events halls, museums, and even amusement park rides.

The park has a largely science-based theme. The surrounding museums include one dedicated to soviet era arcade gaming technology, a butterfly house, and an aquarium.

The north end of the park boasts a display of aeronautical vehicles as the centrepiece to a large plaza. In addition to two planes and a helicopter, visitors can also marvel at the full-sized rocket in the centre. Of course, the main purpose of the park is in its various exhibition halls.

Events are held here year-round, and visitors to the area are typically in town for a specific event. Whether you are here for a particular convention or not, it is well worth checking what events will be taking place during your trip.

Just south of the VDNHk Park is the Museum of Cosmonautics . Identifiable by the sweeping spire, the museum hosts various exhibits on space exploration. Built to honour the launch of Sputnik 1, the museum chronicles the era that saw man first launch into the cosmos.

Just a short walk from the VDNHk park is Ostankino Tower . The television tower is currently the tallest freestanding structure in Europe. Visitors can take a guided tour up to a viewing deck near the top of the tower to enjoy incredible views of Moscow and the surrounding landscape.

The tower is located at the south end of Ostankino Park . The vast, wooded park, with its many pathways and historic manor, makes a lovely place to escape the concrete landscape of Moscow.

If you get tired of all the crowds and technology of the exhibition park, you can come here for an escape into the fresh air.
