Things to do in Kundasang

We visited Kundasang, the small town near Kinabalu National Park in the district of Ranau, recently. Here is the list of things to do in Kundasang based on our 2D1N itinerary.

We were here because this was the best place to acclimatize ourselves to the high altitude before scaling Mount Kinabalu. With an altitude of 1900m, Kundasang is a quaint little town with lovely scenery and the stunning Mount Kinabalu as the breathtaking backdrop.

Our Kundasang itinerary includes all the places we planned for. First, we passed the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge, a sight that was a feast for the eyes. We also stopped by Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol at Tuaran to try the famous Sinalau Bakau, a local smoked wild boar meat. Another stopover was Pekan Nabalu, where we could soak in the local culture, purchase souvenirs, and appreciate the spectacular scenery of the surrounding mountains.

Sosodikon Hill

Upon arriving at the Kundasang Market, we were greeted by the frigid weather and misty scenery. Kundasang is a peaceful town, and the people were friendly, providing a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of Kota Kinabalu.

Things to do in Kundasang

While in Kundasang, we visited the Desa Cattle Dairy Farm, a popular tourist spot. The farm was home to hundreds of cows and provided a glimpse into the dairy farming industry. Sosodikon Hill has a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, another must-visit site, even if you do not intend to climb Mount Kinabalu. Visiting the Alpaca Club was a memorable experience as we could touch and feed the alpacas. We also visited the Poring Hot Spring and walked across the suspension bridge.

Don’t miss the video we shot at Kundasang. It is at the end of this article. 👇👇

The highlight of our trip to Kundasang was seeing the Rafflesia, a rare and beautiful flower in full bloom, in the nearby village.

Here are the details of the itinerary, which covers all the things to do in Kundasang :

1. The Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

Things to do in Kundasang, Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

The Tamparuli Suspension Bridge is a sturdy structure located in the sub-district of Tuaran. It is an alternative route local communities commute between Tamparuli and the main road. This attractive bridge has a legendary tale and has withstood numerous flood events.

Things to do in Kundasang, Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

A plaque is erected in memory of two British soldiers who died on May 18, 1960, while attempting to save a local woman.

According to local folktales, the Tamparuli Low Bridge was built by a British engineer during the post-war colonial period to provide better access for the villagers. However, the bridge repeatedly collapsed during the rainy season due to the river currents. After several unsuccessful attempts to rebuild the bridge, the villagers consulted a medium, who helped them communicate with the spiritual world. The spirits revealed that the bridge was constructed on a sacred site and demanded fair compensation for a human sacrifice to the spirit Ombuakar, who lived inside the Tamparuli River.

kundasang trip itinerary

Today, the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge is a popular tourist attraction due to its colorful appearance and tall structure. Visitors can enjoy a traditional dance performance by a community of volunteers at the starting point of the bridge. Crossing or visiting the bridge is free, but visitors may leave a tip for the dancers.

2. Stop over at Pekan Nabalu

Things to do in Kundasang, Pekan Nabalu

The charming Pekan Nabalu is a popular stop for locals and tourists traveling from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang town. It is located 12 km from Kinabalu Park.

It’s hard to miss this bustling rest stop as many vehicles are parked here while people browse various food and handicraft stalls set up by local vendors.

Things to do in Kundasang, Pekan Nabalu

The main attraction in Pekan Nabalu is the Nabalu Market, which sells a variety of local handicrafts, souvenirs, fruits, vegetables, and traditional food condiments. There are also public washrooms, a mini-market, and numerous restaurants to take a break and enjoy a meal.

Most notably, the area features a lookout point where visitors can snap pictures with the breathtaking Mount Kinabalu as a backdrop. This view is supposed to be awe-inspiring when you can see the mountain clearly without clouds. Unfortunately, it was raining with heavy mist when we stopped by in the afternoon.

3. Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol

Things to do in Kundasang, Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol

If you’re traveling from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang, try the local delicacy, Sinalau Bakas. You can find the most popular Sinalau Bakas stalls along the roadway from Tamparuli to Kundasang. It’s hard to miss as busloads of tourists usually stop to taste this native flavor of Sabah.

Things to do in Kundasang, Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol

Sinalau Bakas means smoked wild boar in the indigenous language. The preparation is simple – slabs of marinated wild boar meat are smoked over an open fire pit while the cook flips the succulent flesh and fans the flames underneath. The meat is freshly cooked only after you place your order, so you may need to wait at least 10-15 minutes.

Things to do in Kundasang, Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol

We enjoyed our Sinalau Bakas with traditional chili sauce, which added a little extra kick to the already flavorful dish. Despite just finishing lunch, we ordered RM10 worth of Sinalau Bakas among the four of us and finished everything in a flash.

4. Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

Things to do in Kundasang, Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

Dubbed the ‘Little New Zealand’ of Sabah playfully, this place will transport you to the famous dairy farms of Kiwi land with its cool breeze, misty surroundings, and highland landscapes that create an overseas-like atmosphere.

What draws visitors here is the expansive cattle farm that produces a whopping 900,000 liters of milk annually across 199 hectares of land. Most milking cows are of the Holstein Friesians breed, renowned for their exceptional milk production capabilities.

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

For families seeking an ideal vacation destination, this place offers an array of activities, such as feeding the calves with bottled milk, observing the milk processing procedures, and taking an educational tour of the facilities. If you’ve ever been curious about the milk collection and commercialization process, Desa Cattle Farm is the perfect place to visit.

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm has transformed into a sustainable agro-tourism venture that produces high-quality local-made products such as fresh milk, yogurt, cheese, and their famous Gelato ice cream. There is a retail section where we tasted the dairy products made with their milk.

5. Sosodikon Hill

Sosodikon Hill

Sosodikon Hill (Pyramid Hill) is a popular attraction in the tranquil rural village of Kundasang. Situated at 1465 meters, the hill provides breathtaking views of the valley below and the towering Mount Kinabalu on a clear day.

Adjacent to Sosodikon Hill is the Desa Dairy Farm Kundasang. Therefore, we decided to visit the hill after exploring the farm in the morning. We had to register at the counter before starting the hike.

The entrance fee to Sosodikon Hill is RM5 for adults and RM3 for children for Malaysians, RM10 for international adults, and RM5 for children.

Sosodikon Hill

The hill’s name, Sosodikon, is derived from the Dusun language word “sodik,” a traditional trap that locals once used to capture animals such as deer, squirrels, birds, and other small creatures. The hill’s location was ideal for the villagers to set traps when the area was primarily forested. A sosodikon is a spot where traps can be set.

Sosodikon Hill

The hike to the top of the hill is short and easy, covering only about 400 meters from the entrance and taking just 10 minutes. We were greeted with various beautiful and vibrantly colored flowers blooming on both sides of the trail as we ascended.

Sosodikon Hill

We saw families and individuals of all ages, including young children and the elderly, hiking with us since the hike was not very challenging. There is no need to hire a guide to climb this hill.

Sosodikon Hill

A viewing platform is at the top,  with Mount Kinabalu as the backdrop and the valley and farmhouses scattered in between. We were fortunate to have a cloudless and blue sky, which provided the perfect opportunity for taking memorable pictures and selfies.

We climbed Mount Kinabalu the next day. Here is our “ Climbing Mount Kinabalu- the comprehensive guide of the whole hiking trail.” You will love to read it even if you do not intend to climb!

6. The Alpaca Club

 The Alpaca Club

Imagine being surrounded by a group of adorable alpacas!

If you’re an animal lover, consider visiting the Alpaca Club , a quaint alpaca farm in Kundasang. Here, you can pet, feed, and unwind with these friendly animals at this petting zoo, which offers a peaceful landscape with Mount Kinabalu as a stunning backdrop.

Alpacas resemble llamas, with their long, slender necks, soft tufts, and innocent eyes, and are furrier, gentler, and just as charming.

 The Alpaca Club

You can get up close, learn about their characteristics, and even call them by name. We offered them some dried grass to munch on while other visitors busily took selfies with these furry creatures and their never-ending smiles.

 The Alpaca Club

There are numerous picturesque spots to take some lovely photographs, including a unique bench that looks like a bird’s nest, surrounded by twigs.

kundasang trip itinerary

You can stay at the small chalet inside the Alpaca Club to spend more time with the alpacas. The two cozy homestay rooms, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of Mount Kinabalu and the undulating countryside from the balcony.

kundasang trip itinerary

You can visit the Alpaca Club without prior reservations or bookings. Admission costs are as follows: Adults pay RM15/pax, children aged 4-12 pay RM10/pax, and those under four years old pay RM2/pax.

7. Poring Hot Spring

Poring Hot Spring

Poring derives its name from a type of giant bamboo thriving nearby, approximately 40 kilometers from Kinabalu Park headquarters. It is nestled in a lowland forest, about 400 meters above sea level, where gigantic dipterocarp trees can be easily viewed from the pathways.

The hot sulfur spring bath at Poring is renowned and was initially established by the Japanese during World War II. The open-air baths are filled with hot spring water, and an indoor bathtub is also available for those who prefer privacy.

Poring Hot Spring

Poring offers a breathtaking treetop walk on its 43-meter-tall canopy walkway.

Canopy Walkway

Poring Hot Spring

Animals that reside in tropical rainforests reportedly spend 75% of their time underneath the forest canopy, which is situated more than 20 meters above the ground. This naturally derived hiding place serves as a sanctuary for numerous creatures. If you want to observe these creatures, the canopy walkway is the perfect location. When observed from the ground, animals under the canopy appear less wary of humans.

Poring Hot Spring

The canopy walkway comprises zig-zagging suspension bridges made of rope and steel cables that run through the crowns of the tallest, strongest, long-lasting trees, such as “Menggaris” (Kompassia excelsa) and “Seraya” (Shorea sp). This walkway includes many horizontally suspended 5-meter aluminum ladders that have been securely fastened together. The open rungs of the ladders have walking boards covering them, and they are connected with polyester ropes to ensure safety. Netting is enclosed on both sides of the walkway.

Kipungit Waterfall

Kipungit Waterfall

The closest waterfall to Poring Hot Spring & Natural Reserve is Kipungit Waterfall.

Kipungit is quicker to get to than Langanan Waterfall, which requires a two-hour hike. From the Canopy Walk ticket gate, it takes about 15 minutes to get there.

We cool ourselves in the chilly waters of the falls after the climb to the canopy walk.

Although the waterfall may not be tall, heavy rainfall can create a powerful water flow. Therefore, visitors should exercise caution when swimming or playing in the water, as even shallow pools can pose a risk if the current is strong.

8. Kundasang Market

Kundasang Market

We arrived at the misty Kundasang Market in the evening. The market was a lively hub of activity, selling everything from fresh vegetables to beautiful flowers.

Kundasang Market

Kundasang is at the foothill of Mount Kinabalu with its stunning mountain as the backdrop loomed large in the distance and majestic peaks shrouded in mist. We took a moment to take in the beauty of the surroundings.

Kundasang Market

Just behind the market is the Kundasang war memorial. This monument honors the British and Australian soldiers who died during the infamous Sandakan Death Marches.

kundasang trip itinerary

Unfortunately, we were late as it was already closed in the evening.

9. Sighting Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world

Rafflesia,

While exploring the Poring area, we noticed some signs erected by the local villages that indicated the blooming of Rafflesia. In the past, we have attempted to see the largest flower in the world at different locations but were unsuccessful due to the absence of blooming Rafflesia during our visit.

Rafflesia,

Determined not to miss the opportunity this time, we immediately headed toward the area indicated by the sign. Rafflesia is known for its massive size, with some species growing up to 1 meter in diameter. We were lucky to catch the blooming of two Rafflesia, one on day three and the second on day 4.

10. Natural fish spas at Bombon Kg. Marakau

Bombon Kg. Marakau

We stopped by Bombon Kg. Marakau to have a fish spa on the first day in Kundasang. We chose here than the more popular Luanti Fish Massage since it was quite late in the evening.

It was a unique experience that left us feeling rejuvenated. We held the fish pellets in our palms, and the fish swam around our legs, sucking away the dead skin from our feet, leaving us tingling. It gave us a good feeling and the joy of watching the fish, which came close and allowed us to touch them. Being able to interact with them was an amazing experience.

We highly recommend spending a night in Kundasang, whether you’re an adventurous hiker planning to climb Mount Kinabalu or simply seeking a respite from the sweltering heat. The stunning scenery, friendly people, and delicious cuisine make Kundasang a highlight of our trip to Sabah.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary

Kundasang Trip Itinerary For All Budgets

Hiking Mount Kinabalu, but want to explore the small, cosy town of Kundasang while you’re in town? Here are some ideas and recommendations based on my stay – 5 days 4 nights Kundasang trip itinerary .

Kundasang is 1.5 to 2 hours away from Kota Kinabalu. Known for its highlands, it is considered to be like the New Zealand of Borneo, with its landscape and high elevations.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 1

This little city not only offers a serene and picturesque setting with numerous attractions to explore, but it is also home to the highest mountain in Malaysia and Borneo, which is Mount Kinabalu.

Most climbers will fly into Kota Kinabalu a day before climbing Mount Kinabalu. However, I took the whole week on leave to explore this little town of Kundasang as it would be my first time there.

I’ve only been to Tawau and Semporna for diving, so I was quite excited to explore Kundasang! 😀

Here, I will share my Kundasang travel blog itinerary, including accommodations , places to go, places to eat, things to do in Kundasang, and the weather!

Kundasang Trip Itinerary F or 5 Days

Kundasang weather.

A tropical climate characterises the weather in Kundasang. The weather during the day can be warm and hot.

However, the temperature could drop during nighttime, making it very chilly. Brrr!

Wear warm clothes in the evening, as it can get freezing. It was pleasantly warm during our stay during the day, and it rained most nights.

The best time to visit Kundasang is during the dry season, from April to October , when the weather is more stable and pleasant.

Accommodations

You will find numerous homestays, Airbnbs, and hotel lodges around Kundasang . Some offer a magnificent view of Mount Kinabalu, and some offer tranquillity amid nature.

Here are the two different Kundasang lodges I stayed at throughout my Kundasang trip itinerary .

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 2

  • D’Shaunn Lodge & Cafe

D’Shaun is just right next to Desa Dairy Farm. It have a sky deck observation view and decent rooms for a short stay.

The rooms are comfortable, and there is ample parking. Breakfast is alright. It’s local food like nasi goreng, mee goreng, and fried eggs—nothing too fancy, but enough to fill your tummy.

The only downside of it is that this lodge is pretty far from the town and uphill. It is very dark at night, so before heading back to your accommodation, grab your dinner or your groceries and whatnot.

At the moment, reservations are only made through WhatsApp . Do check out the type of rooms and the current rates here.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 3

  • B Inspired Abode

B Inspired Abode is another lovely place to stay, and I would come back here again. I love the pressure of the hot water and the fantastic view of Mount Kinabalu!

You get to experience the sunrise and sunset of Mount Kinabalu from just one place! Trust me, you can just sit there and mountain watching.

The one thing I would prefer to avoid is the VERY steep slope from the lobby area to our tiny little lodge. It was slightly daunting as I have vertigo! O.O

All in all, I enjoyed my stay at these two places. Both lodges are situated on top of the hill with a view of Mount Kinabalu.

Here are some other recommendations from family and friends who have been in Kundasang 😉

  • Hidden Hill Homestay Kundasang
  • Bayu Senja Lodge
  • Amazing Grace Lodge

Renting a car is the best way to move around Kundasang. It gives you the flexibility to move around Kundasang easily.

One tip on renting a car is to ensure that you rent a car that is reliable and robust, as certain roads around Kundasang can be very steep, and you need sufficient horsepower.

If not, you will strain your engine and find yourself stranded by the roadside. I actually saw a few cars stranded on our way to Kundasang!

I rented a Proton Bezza from ED Holidays Travel & Car Rental through WhatsApp at a reasonable price.

Otherwise, you can also check out other cheap car rentals in Kota Kinabalu that will make your life easier and more practical.

Day 1: Arrival in Kota Kinabalu

I took the earliest flight into Kota Kinabalu with my hiking buddies. We arrived at KKIA and started the day off with a good cuppa of coffee. We met our car rental guy and took off on our road trip.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 4

📍 1st stop:  Kota Kinabalu Handicraft Market  (Pasar Kraftangan)

Pasar Kraftangan is also well known by the name of Filipino Market.

You will find yourself amongst endless stalls along winding alleyways, from pearl jewellery to rattan bags, baskets and handmade souvenirs.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 5

I’m a big fan of earrings. So I bought freshwater pearl earrings here at a good price 😉

Next to the Handicraft Market is the Snacks Heaven. You can have various kinds of snacks and munchies, such as Kuih Kuis, Kuih Kapit, and all other types of snacks that make your taste buds dance.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 6

Plus, you will see a lot of dried sea produce, such as fish, cuttlefish, prawns, and sea cucumbers.

I bought the famous blue-eyed anchovies, which are widely known in Sabah!

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 7

📍 2nd stop: The Warung Kepayan

Famous for its nasi kuning ayam, nasi lalap, Warung Kepayan is one of the local warung (roadside stalls) that the locals frequent every day. Their service is fast, the portion is quite big, and it’s yummy!

Parking can be a bit difficult during lunch hour. So, come slightly earlier than lunchtime and park along the road.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 9

📍 3rd Stop: Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

The next stop is the famous Tamparuli Bridge, with its legendary tale. It is the best place to visit in Kundasang.

Upon arriving at the entrance, all the visitors were greeted by volunteers with a traditional dance performance. At the end of the performance, the locals briefly explained the history of the bridge.

According to the folktale, a lady was sacrificed to ensure that the bridge stopped collapsing! Intrigued right?

So, a British engineer led the construction of Tamparuli Low Bridge during the post-war colonial period to provide easy and better access for the villagers. However, it kept on collapsing due to the river currents during rainy seasons.

It is believed that the river spirit, Ombuakar, was not happy with the bridge, and to appease the spirit, a human sacrifice was demanded. So, a fair maiden was chosen and buried alive under the first pole of the bridge!

Now, Tamparuli Bridge is standing strong and has gained attraction from local tourists and foreigners. There is no entrance fee, but you are welcome to give a tip.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 11

📍 4th Stop: Pekanabalu

I love this cute little town. It has a fantastic view of Mount Kinabalu.

It’s a must-stop area before you reach Kundasang town. You will not miss this town as it is usually crowded!

In this town, you can stop by for a toilet break, a coffee break, or even a shopping break at the souvenir market.

There is also a big area where you can have a picnic with your family and friends, with Mount Kinabalu as your backdrop. It’s definitely one of the Instagrammable places you cannot miss!

📍 5th stop: Kundasang Point View

Upon reaching the town of Kundasang, we stopped by the Kundasang Point View roundabout to enjoy the view of Mount Kinabalu again.

We can never get enough of it. It’s majestic and beautiful. I sat there for quite some time, trying to figure out why I said yes to climb this huge mountain 😉

While our hiking group wandered around taking silly, memorable photos, we met a group of gentlemen from Malaysia and Singapore who were on a road trip exploring Sabah.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 12

Living life, exploring places, and going on adventures. Truly inspiring!

Day 2: Visiting Kundasang – Animals Day

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 13

📍1st Stop: Desa Dairy Farm

The following day, after breakfast, we headed over to the home of the local Desa Milk brand.

Desa Dairy Farm is one of Kundasang’s tourist spots renowned for its local dairy products. Located on the highlands of Kundansang, the farm is popular with both locals and tourists.

With its majestic view of Mount Kinabalu, it’s one of the places you must visit while in Kundasang!

The highlight of this visit was I had to feed the cows with milk and grass. Yes, you have the chance to feed the cow!

You’ll need to pay a small fee to get the milk bottle and grass, but the experience is so much fun. You definitely can bring your date, partner, and kids here to enjoy this little moment.

I was so excited to see black and white cows like the ones in New Zealand. I have only seen the brown ones in Peninsular Malaysia!

Before you come, you will need to register online to secure your places , as there is a maximum number of visitors per day. Otherwise, you can always walk in and see if they have available slots 🙂

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 14

📍 2nd Stop: BW Bus Restaurant

This restaurant has a unique dining experience, whereby you get to dine in an air-conditioned cosy bus.

The concept is different and a little playful. You can take amazing Instagram shots and play around the area.

When you arrive, you will need to pay a fee for the entrance ticket, which will be refunded when you dine in. Food is relatively affordable and good.

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 15

📍3rd Stop: Alpaca Club

The next destination is the Alpaca Club. Oh yes, there are some interesting places in Kundasang!

Here, you’ll get to see and touch the Alpaca in real life. Most of the Alpaca stay within their fence to ensure the safety of the visitors, and there is only one Alpaca outside to mingle around with us.

The guardian will feed it, and you get a chance to take a picture with the cute Alpaca!

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 16

The road to get here is not in good condition, but there will be somebody to guide you with the parking inside. The entrance fee is around RM10 for a time slot of 20 minutes (valid at the time of writing).

There is a limited number of people within the given slot time who can see the Alpaca. So, you may need to wait for a while before getting in.

Day 3: Hills & Cafes

Kundasang Trip Itinerary 17

📍1st Stop: Sosodikan Hill

The next morning, I went to one of the best places to go in Kundasang, which is Sosodikan Hill.

This hill offers another view of Mount Kinabalu that can never bore you. With the clouds and hue of orange sunrise, you will be wowed by its beauty.

If you are an early riser, you can also catch the sunrise. This place is open as early as 6 am and closes at about 5 pm.

Visitors will be required to register at the check-in counter by walk-in. It is a short, small hike of 10 minutes and is suitable for people of all ages.

kundasang trip itinerary

📍 2nd Stop : Restoran Syah Adilah

This restaurant offers simply good food at reasonable prices. With a fair variation of food, I found that it was a good place to stop for a quick lunch. Plus, there were multiple veggie options, such as Sawi Bawang Putih, Taufu Sayur Campur, and Mee Goreng.

I didn’t manage to take any restaurant photos; it was raining heavily, and we were just too hungry O_O

kundasang trip itinerary

📍3rd Stop: Anooh Cafe

This cute little cafe by the roadside has one of the best views of Mount Kinabalu during sunset. The seating inside is quite limited. But don’t worry, they do have a nice outdoor seating area.

We managed to secure one table outside and enjoy eating warmed cookies under the hues of a blue, orangy sky.

It was such beautiful scenery!

Day 4 & 5: Kinabalu Hike

The main reason why I went to Sabah is all in the video below <3

Day 6: Leaving Kundasang & Kota Kinabalu

After checking out, it was time to head back to Kota Kinabalu to catch our flight back home.

While on our way back to Kota Kinabalu, we stopped by durian stalls. My husband wanted to taste the durians from Sabah. The durian was really creamy and good. It was a good buy since the price was very affordable!

Guide Hacks + Tips

– Rent a good, sturdy car for the long drive and get yourself covered with insurance! – Have a lot of cash with you , especially when you hike up Kinabalu. – Eat wisely because I was down with food poisoning along the way and recovered a day before my hike!

FAQ on Mount Kinabalu Packing List

1. how many days should i spend in kundasang.

I’d recommend spending at least 2-3 days in Kundasang to make the most of it!

Kundasang has other exciting places that are not included in this itinerary, such as the Hot Springs, War Memorial, Cultural Village, and so on.

But if you’re in town for only a day, it is still sufficient for you to cover a few main attractions on your list.

I will definitely come back next time and add the missing places to my Kundasang trip itinerary (and hopefully without food poisoning on the next trip!).

2. Which Month Is Best For Kundasang?

The best month to visit Kundasang is April to October . The weather is much more pleasant during the dry season. You’ll get to enjoy sunny days with clear blue skies and chill nights.

Plus, you get to enjoy outdoor seating at certain cafés with the best view of Kinabalu.

3. Is Kundasang Worth Visiting?

Kundasang is a peaceful town, perfect for those who seek a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities.

It is much more oriented towards nature tourism to give you the best experience of the island of Borneo. So, you definitely should include this town in your Sabah trip itinerary.

4. How Long Is The Journey From KK To Kundasang?

The journey from KK to Kundasang takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by car. The driving duration depends on the traffic conditions, road conditions, and breaks you take.

The road was relatively new. It was not as bad and not as terrifying as what I’ve heard from previous travellers who travelled around Sabah.

Ready to Finalise Your Kundasang Trip Itinerary?

This itinerary is based on my personal travel experience, and I may have missed out on a lot of other interesting places around Kundasang, such as the Kundasang Memorial War.

I wish I had discovered more places, but unfortunately, I was hit by food poisoning on my second day in Sabah. It was so bad that I had a fever as well. So, most of the time, I was back at the hotel lodge, resting and conserving energy for the long hike.

I’ve only recommended a few restaurants and cafés that I’ve been to. I can vouch that their coffee/tea and desserts are excellent and worth trying 🙂

All in all, Kundasang was a really lovely town to discover. Waking up in the morning to chase the sunrise, with the calming scenery of Mount Kinabalu and a good cup of coffee, is something that I will never forget and will always cherish.

I hope that this Kundasang trip itinerary is helpful and valuable for your next trip! Share this post with your friends and family <3

The Kundasang War Memorial was set up in honour of the Australian and British prisoners of war who died during the infamous death marches from Sandakan to Ranau during the second World War. Additionally, the memorial honours the native population of Sabah who suffered and sacrificed their lives to aid Allied forces during this time. Kundasang, a town in the clouds

Upon reaching Kundasang

Have you, by chance, ever heard of Kundasang? Kundasang is a little town located along the banks of Kundasang Valley in the Ranau Valley, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. The area around Kundasang is mainly populated by a small population of Chinese people, and mainly by native Dusun, the collective name of the largest ethnic group in Sabah.

The traveling group at the park

The traveling group at the park

Last February my cousins, friends and I traveled to Kota Kinabalu for 4 days, 2 of which we spent in Kundasang. We chose to go there not only to witness the beautiful nature but also to feel chilled as Kundasan is a relatively humid area, one where clouds and rain are often present. Of course the most significant feature of the town is that it is the closest to Mount Kinabalu , Malaysia’s highest peak, and it offers stunning and breathtaking panoramic view of the mountain. Kundasang, at only 6 kilometers away from the park, is in fact the window to Mount Kinabalu . Bear in mind that the view of the peak is only available before dusk and at dawn; the rest of the time, the peak is covered by a thick mist.

View of Mount Kinabalu from Kundasang

View of Mount Kinabalu from Kundasang

The town has an exciting atmosphere, with several shophouses operated by locals and a vegetable market open seven days a week for which Kundasang is renowned.

Added to the above is the wide range of activities and attractions. Follow me on a unique journey to this windy land and visit with me:

– Rumah Terbalik

– Kinabalu National Park

– Kundasang War Memorial

– Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

– Strawberry and Rose Garden

– Sinalau Bakas

Clouds ever present

Clouds ever present

These are not the only attractions in Kundasang, there are more amazing places we did not manage to visit due to our limited time. For those with a few more days, I suggest a visit to Mesilau National Park, Poring Hot Spring and Nature Reserve, Crystal Hill and not to forget the famous climb to the peak of Mount Kinabalu .

Kundasang has a great climate, great views and clean air. It was the perfect place for us to escape the hot tropical sun we are accustomed to, as well as a great escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Kundasang is located 90 kilometers from Sabah capital Kota Kinabalu; the roads are good and not snaky at all, hence the drive there should lasts a relaxed 2 hours. You need a car to fully enjoy Kundasang attractions. Renting a car in Kota Kinabalu is cheap, at about RM100 per day.

There are many local tour operators around Jesselton Point including Diverse Borneo, Sunny Reef Divers, and Scuba Junkie KK. • #HHWT Tip : Avoid visiting Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park between November and February due to the rough sea conditions.

Explore the islands at Tunku Abdul Rahman

Gaya island.

  • Gaya Island is the largest island in the park, and the name originates from the word ‘Gayo’, which means ‘big’ in the Bajau language.
  • The best ways to appreciate your time on the island are by swimming at Police Beach and diving to see the fish and coral gardens around the island.
  • Thanks to its clear and calm water, snorkelling and diving at Gaya Island are suitable for beginners except during the wet season between November and February.
  • If you’re planning to stay overnight, check out Gaya Island Resort and Bunga Raya Island Resort .

Manukan Island

  • Manukan Island is the second-largest island in the park and the country’s first marine national park.
  • Famous for its beautiful white sandy beach, it’s no surprise to see families and couples swimming in the crystal-clear water.
  • It’s also a popular snorkelling site to see parrotfish, butterflyfish, and sergeant major fish. It’s advisable to wear a life jacket while snorkelling, and you can rent a life jacket on the island. Children’s sizes are available but in limited quantities.
  • P.S. You can stay overnight at the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges at Manukan Island to make the most of your time here.

Sapi Island

  • Sapi Island is widely frequented by adventure seekers thanks to the popularity of the Coral Flyer, the world’s longest island-to-island zipline.
  • Connecting Sapi Island to Gaya Island, visitors can cross the 250-meter zipline above the clear turquoise water for an island experience unlike any other.
  • The fee is RM64 per person (Malaysian) and RM86 per person (non-Malaysians). Children below 12KG need to sign up for a tandem zipline (accompanied by an adult) with an additional fee of RM30 per person.

Mamutik Island

  • Mamutik Island is the smallest island in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. It’s also less touristy, which is perfect for anyone who enjoys some quiet time by the beach.
  • It’s safe to snorkel at Mamutik Island, but the water condition is rougher here as compared to the other islands. We recommend only experienced divers or snorkelers here and do adhere to safety precautions at all times.
  • When swimming along the sandy beach, do note that the water gets deep at approximately 10 meters from the shore (don’t worry, just look out for the markers!). If you’re not a good swimmer, be sure not to swim too far.

Sulug Island

  • Sulug Island is also a great choice to escape the beach crowd as it’s the furthest island in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park.
  • Since it has the least number of tourists (almost none!), you won’t find facilities or food stalls here. Instead, you’ll be treated to a view of the sea complete with seashells and corals lining along the beaches.
  • #HHWT Tip : Since it’s the least frequented island, most boat operators would likely turn down anyone who is visiting alone as the boat transfer service is expensive. We recommend coming in a group if you’re interested to visit.

Dinner at Borenos Fried Chicken

There’s a reason why Borenos Fried Chicken is a local’s favourite. With two outlets in Kota Kinabalu (the other one at Star City Mall), this Sabahan fast-food chain specialises in deep-fried and juicy spring chicken. Visit Kinabalu Park

  • Kinabalu Park is Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site and home to the majestic Mount Kinabalu, the country’s highest peak. It’s less than 2 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu.
  • If you’re not planning to climb Mount Kinabalu during this trip, Kinabalu Park is a great place for nature lovers to experience the lush rainforest minus the hike!

  • While jungle trekking, try to spot a Rafflesia, the biggest flower in the world.
  • Known for its reddish-brown colour, Rafflesia is a five-petaled flower with vertical spikes in the middle.

  • There are many resorts and travel agents in Kinabatangan that offer 2D1N or 3D2N packages, which include multiple river cruises along the Kinabatangan River. The tours usually cover accommodation, transportation, and food (unless stated).
  • In this itinerary, we’ll cover where to stay and things to do at the Kinabatangan River in 2D1N. The experience differs according to your tour package.

Check in to your accommodation
