Lagardère heroes Peruvian culture with Fantastico Peru store at Lima airport

By Faye Bartle | Friday, 27 January 2023 14:59

Fantastico Peru.

The official inauguration of Fantastico Peru, which took place yesterday ( Thursday 26 January, 2023 ) and was attended by representatives from the French and German embassies, delegates from the German and Lima Chambers of Commerce, and  local journalists.

Lagardère Travel Retail Peru is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its operations at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport with the unveiling of a new Fantastico Peru store concept, which has been designed to immerse travellers in Peruvian culture. The revamped, 250-square-metre space brings to life the history, culture and architecture of Peru in a retail concept, creating a vibrant sense of place for travelling consumers.

“We are very proud to be unveiling this new concept which brings together the best of what the Peruvian culture, gastronomy and artisans have to offer,” said Cyril Letocart, CEO of Lagardère Travel Retail in Peru.

“It is a new step towards creating different duty free experiences for travellers, focused on local authenticity.

“To materialise this ambition, we have worked hand in hand with our partners at Lima Airport Partners who share the same vision and values.

“And we must all recognise this has been quite an achievement given the sizeable challenges we have faced along the way, from juggling with multiple technical and suppliers’ constraints in a still feverish logistic environment to managing the continued impact of the sanitary crisis”.

Fantastico Peru.

Fantastico Peru brings to life the history, culture and architecture of Peru in a retail concept.

Fantastico Peru is home to a carefully selected line up of products ( spanning beverages, gourmet foods, souvenirs, textiles and cosmetics ) sourced from local brands and producers.

Travellers can access a large assortment of Peru’s famous pisco ( including the exclusive pisco Parras Centenarias by Demonio de Tacama ), as well as gin, vodka, beers, and the award winning Black Whiskey from Don Michael Andean Distillery.

To enhance the experience, the store features engaging animations including a distillery bar showcasing local artists and products.

There’s also a space dedicated to chocolate, giving tablets and pralines an elevated exposure and enabling customers to pick and mix an assortment of their favourite chocotejas ( a truffled chocolate from Peru ).

Fantastico Peru.

The new immersive concept store is home to a carefully selected line up of products sourced from local brands and producers.

Finally, shoppers can browse a section dedicated to healthy foods, containing top finds such as 100% locally sourced gluten- and sugar-free products, as well as superfoods.

“We are very pleased to celebrate the anniversary of our commercial partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail, with whom we have built a relationship based on trust and collaborative work during the pandemic recovery,” said Norbert Onkelbach, Chief Commercial Officer of Lima Airport Partners.

“Together, we have designed a commercial offer focused on some common values: improving passenger experience; revaluing Peruvian culture; and promoting a sustainable business through employing from the local neighbours of Callao and providing opportunities for local suppliers.”

Fantastico Peru.

Customers can pick and mix an assortment of their favourite chocotejas.

Fantastico Peru is is aligned to Lagardère Travel Retail’s CSR pledge to support local producers and economies and champion the ‘Peru’ brand.

Most of the shop’s fixtures have been reused from the previous incarnation of the space, to promote circularity.

Since Lagardère Travel Retail took over the operations of duty free stores at Jorge Chavez International Airport in January 2022, the team has worked hard to develop the proposition with new initiatives including: a new payment area aligned to the Aelia Duty Free concept; a space dedicated to chocolate with a ‘treats tree’ inspired by the Peruvian Yuza tree; and a vast, modern sense of place development to reflect Peruvian culture.

  • Lagardere S A : Lagardère Travel Retail opens for business in Peru

Paris, January 26, 2022

Lagardère Travel Retail is thrilled to announce the opening of three Aelia Duty Free stores at Jorge-Chávez international airport in Lima, Peru, under a ground-breaking profit-sharing agreement concluded with Lima Airport Partners (LAP) last year. These openings mark the very beginning of the Group's operations in Latin America, which will shortly be followed by several F&B openings in Santiago de Chile's airport.

From today, passengers passing through Jorge-Chávez international airport will be able to shop in one of three Aelia Duty Free stores, over a total commercial surface of 3,000 sq meters, at departures and arrivals.

The stores will feature all Duty Free core business categories, travel accessories, souvenirs and snacking. Lagardère Travel Retail's differentiating approach is to combine the highest international standards with a commitment to promote and leverage local expertise and know-hows. The company will capitalize on the global Aelia Duty Free brand to improve passenger experience and diversify the offer within the airport. Over the next few months, Lagardère Travel Retail and LAP will work closely together on further developments by leveraging existing infrastructure and embedding key features of the Aelia concept in the stores we are taking over.

In line with the airport's innovative renovation plan, Aelia Duty Free plans to feature a significant "sense of place" dimension with a broad range of local brands and products to give passengers a first or last taste of what the unique Peruvian culture has best to offer. The local offer makes up 15% of the total product range, with over 800 product references. In total 15 new local brands have been added to the portfolio and Lagardere Travel Retail is planning to further extend this local range by adding more than 20 new local brands in the coming months.

In line with the group's CSR pledge to support local producers and economies, the Aelia stores are committed to best champion the "Peru" brand: in addition to the 100 jobs being created locally to run the operations, the staff will include 20 young people from the "Tu Futuro" programme, developed by LAP in partnership with the Association Forge to promote the employment of the youth in the Callao region where the airport is located. Over 40 local suppliers have been referenced, staff uniforms and shops furniture are 100% manufactured locally.

The strong assets which have built Aelia Duty Free brand's recognition and success globally will also all be available in Lima: an unrivalled range of international brands, animations and experience for travelers.

Commenting on this announcement, Cyril Letocart, CEO of Lagardère Travel Retail Peru said: "It has been a great challenge to start operations in just a few months and we are so happy to finally be open to passengers traveling to and from Lima. We are very grateful to our partners at LAP for such a fruitful collaboration and for their support. Our mutual understanding and shared vision delivered value far beyond the terms of our contract! We have opened our office in Lima four months ago with four staff and we have built a dynamic team of 120 staff ready to provide the highest standards of customer service to passengers. Our focus for the coming months will be to enhance the customer experience and bring the best of Peru to Lima Airport!"

Lucio Benavente, Retail Manager, Lima Airport Partners, also commented: "We are very glad to start operations of the Aelia Duty Free stores at Jorge Chávez Airport, hand in hand with an experienced and renowned company as Lagardère Travel Retail, also being a strategic partner for LAP's business relationships and new business models. This alliance responds to our commitment to offer a unique and innovative experience to passengers, with rapid responses to user needs, adapting to the new and changing demands of the industry." Lagardère Travel Retail has been awarded the exclusivity of Duty Free operations at Jorge-Chávez international airport by LAP in July last year, with a long-term concession contract based on profits sharing. This deal marked the first large-scale materialization of a business model that has been widely discussed in the industry to better balance risks and benefits between parties as well as to unleash growth potential.

Lagardère Travel Retail to open 11 F&B outlets at ‘Land of Flavours’ food hall in new Lima Airport terminal

SOUTH AMERICA. Lagardère Travel Retail will manage an expansive food court at Jorge Chávez International Airport’s new terminal in Lima set to open in early 2025.

This follows the company’s proposal for a blend of 11 international and South American eateries being approved by Lima Airport Partners.

Just two years after taking its first steps in Peru with the opening of several Aelia Duty Free store s, the French company’s new food hall will cover 3,300sq m under the brand name ‘Nación Sazón’ which means ‘The Land of Flavours’ or ‘The Land of Seasonings’ in Spanish.

The aim is to offer travellers a true sense of Peru’s vibrant gastronomic heritage, using local top chefs to offer world-famous dishes such as ceviche (cured fish platters) while also providing plenty of healthy grab-and-go, coffee and comfort food choices.

To leverage Peru’s culinary recognition on the international stage, Lagardère Travel Retail’s team in Latin America has forged key partnerships with some of South America’s best cooks. They include Mitsuharu Tsumaru, Chef at Maido , ranked 6th in the ‘50 Best World Restaurants’ list, and Jaime Pesaque, Chef at Mayta , which is ranked 47th in the ‘50 Best World Restaurants’ list.

Lagardère Travel Retail Peru CEO Cyril Letocart, said, “This new contract with Lima Airport Partners (LAP) confirms our willingness to invest in Peru and in the region. Together with LAP and the most famous Peruvian chefs, we want to create the best culinary experience in an airport in the region.

“Our aim is to transform Lima Airport into a gastronomic hub: travellers passing through Lima Airport will have the opportunity to discover, or to enjoy one last time, the flavours of this wonderful country,”

The chef concepts featured in the new F&B line-up will include:

  • Mitsuharu Tsumura: A fusion of the chef’s native Japanese cuisine and items from his existing BBQ chicken chain, Tori Polleria. D iners will be able to choose from classic sushi, chicken dishes and teriyakis, all with a Peruvian twist.
  • Jaime Pesaque : This chef’s new seafood concept (pictured below) will bring travellers a taste of Callao, a neighbourhood known for its fishing port and famous for dishes such as potatoes with crispy squid and quail’s eggs or grilled octopus with baby corn.

  • Las Reyes by Isolina: A sister concept to Chef Josè del Castillo’s well-known downtown Lima restaurant Isolina , focusing on Creole cuisine such as gumbo, pisco sours and beef stews.
  • Javier Miyasato : The creative chef behind the ‘Burger Boy’ chain and the winner of Peru’s Best Burger award will bring his twist on deluxe fast food to the airport.
  • KO : An innovative Asian fusion concept from the renowned Peruvian gastronomic group MCK. It will blend fusion flavours from various countries across the continent in shareable small plates.
  • La Lucha : A rising star in Peruvian sandwich culture, this fun concept offers innovative sandwiches, such as the popular ‘c hicharron ’, which is made with slow-cooked fried pork.
  • Pan Sal Aire : Crafted by Chef Jeronimo Aliagas, this concept meaning ‘ Bread, Salt, Air’ revolves around sourdough bakes from bread to pizza and pastries.
  • Puku Puku: A socially and environmentally responsible Peruvian coffee brand that unites local coffee producers in a common Fairtrade cause.

In addition to these external partnerships, the Lagardère team will introduce some of its existing concepts such as Natoo – a healthy grab-and-go shop – and So Coffee . The offer will be rounded off with local dining options such as Wok to Gate, a Peruvian ‘chifa’ cuisine concept, influenced by the early 20th-century Chinese community in Peru.

Architects and designers including Altavia Group (Foodhall), Peruvian firms Arquitekturas and 51-1, and Grunwald from Chile will spearhead the design. ‍

Lagardère Travel Retail Perú, in partnership with Lima Airport Partners and Inflyter , is launching a new purchasing process through the installation of a Smart Locker at Jorge Chávez International Airport in the international luggage area.

lagardere travel retail peru

This automated locker allows passengers to do their shopping in the departure shop and pick up their purchases when they return to Perú. This is the first automated duty free locker service implemented in the country.

By offering this alternative shopping method to passengers, the partners are confident in increasing customer service, conversion rate and reaching new clients.

The automated machine features an interactive touch-screen that travellers use to enter a six-digit pin or to scan the barcode printed on their purchase receipt. Then they scan their boarding pass and passport and the device automatically opens the door so the customer can collect their items. The lockers are positioned outside the Aelia Duty-Free store at arrivals, next to the baggage claim to make it easier for clients to pick up their purchase and their luggage.

Lagardère Travel Retail and Lima Airport Partners Pioneer Profit-Sharing Duty Free Agreement in Peru

Lagardère Travel Retail and Lima Airport Partners (LAP), a Fraport company, are pioneering a new era for Travel Retail business models by signing a long-term concession contract based on profits sharing for the exclusive operation of Duty Free stores at Jorge-Chávez International Airport in Peru. This is the first large-scale implementation of a business model that has been widely discussed in the industry to better balance risks and benefits between the airport and retail operator. The goal is to unleash growth potential, even more relevant in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting drop in global air traffic.

Lagardère and Lima Airport Partners

On 20 July, Lagardère Travel Retail and Lima Airport Partners (LAP), a Fraport AG majority owned company, signed a long-term agreement for Lagardère Travel Retail to take over the Duty Free operations at Lima Airport. Effective January 2022, the 13-year concession will include the introduction of the Duty Free brand Aelia at the airport ́s Duty Free stores, which comprise a total of 3,000 square meters of commercial space. The innovative profit-sharing agreement sets new standards that both partners hope to capitalize on during an environment of uncertainty in the post-Covid consolidation period. This retail model, which has come into sharp focus during the crisis, has been discussed for several years as a necessary evolution to maximize sales potential and to introduce greater balance and new opportunities in the way risks and benefits are shared between parties.

The profit-sharing agreement will open up significant revenue potential for both Lagardère Travel Retail and LAP, as well as greater investment opportunities – ultimately benefitting travelers and enhancing the airport experience at the popular Lima Airport hub.

Dag Rasmussen, Chairman and CEO of Lagardère Travel Retail, said: We are thrilled to have found in LAP a like-minded partner who has demonstrated the most innovative and pioneering way of thinking, from selecting an operator via an innovative Partnership Selection Process up to the contract terms. As we continue to face a great deal of uncertainty and are relatively new to the South American region, this profit-sharing agreement is a great vote of confidence from LAP. I am personally grateful for their trust and support in turning theory into action and opening up new perspectives for business models in our industry. We are also confident this is a stepping stone for our partnership with Lima Airport and its majority shareholder Fraport, so that we canall maximize our global expertise and reach to replicate this success elsewhere.

Juan Jose Salmon, CEO of LAP, explained the strategic importance of the new agreement with Lagardère.

CEO of LAP, Juan Jose Salmon, said: In the middle of the pandemic, Lima Airport Partners has successfully negotiated a pioneering partnership that brings a renowned and long-term partner to Lima Airport. Lagardère Travel Retail is renowned for its strong commitment and extensive expertise in travel retail and duty free. Our cooperation with Lagardère Travel Retail fits fully into our vision-of-the-future for airport retail. We believe that collaboration is the key to managing business relationships, as well as actively engaging in new partnership models. We are impressed by Lagardère Travel Retail’s high degree of engagement and innovation, which they will soon be bringing to the Peruvian airport retail market. In the context of LAP’s airport expansion program, this agreement also sends a strong signal to Peru and the global aviation and travel industries. Our agreement will take us well into the next decade – as we move boldly into the new era of aviation. We are dedicated to delivering new and unique airport retail experiences at the Lima gateway to South America.

Along with the duty free shops at Lima Airport’s existing passenger terminal, Lagardère Travel Retail will work with LAP to define a new retail experience for LAP’s future terminal, due to open in 2025. The launch of Lagardère Travel Retail’s operations in Peru marks a significant milestone for Lagardère Travel Retail’s plans to expand the group’s footprint in South America, just a few months after being awarded a concession to build and operate food service outlets at Arturo-Merino-Benítez Airport in Santiago de Chile. South America offers exciting growth prospects, lifted by steady domestic and intra-regional air traffic.

Jorge-Chávez International Lima Airport (LIM) is one of South America’s busiest airports. In the past few years traffic at Lima Airport has grown quickly to reach 23.6 million passengers in 2019. Before Covid-19, LIM’s route network featured 24 passenger airlines serving some 50 international destinations. With its Lima Airport expansion program, LAP is currently developing one of Peru’s most significant mega projects.
