Matilda The Musical

Aug 4 - Aug 12, 2023

" The story of an extraordinary girl who dares to take a stand and change her own destiny. "

Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning  Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical  is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin,  Matilda  has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, Matilda   is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

The recommended age for  Matilda  is 6+. The show includes some loud and scary elements, including discussion of murder and suicide.

The journey of Matilda the Musical from page to stage

The story of Matilda the Musical, based on Roald Dahl 's timeless classic  Matilda , has captivated generations of audiences. Matilda Wormwood, a brilliant but mistreated child with psychokinetic abilities, has not only inspired readers but has also found success in various adaptations, including film and musical formats.

The evolution of Matilda's character

Dahl's initial draft portrayed Matilda as a wicked, irrational girl, drawing inspiration from  Hilaire Belloc 's poem. However, the collaboration between Dahl and his American editor,  Stephen Roxburgh , shaped the novel's transformation into a beloved classic. The decision to make Matilda an innocent child who loved books and developed her powers as a result of abuse transformed the narrative into a poignant exploration of resilience and empowerment.

Matilda on the big screen

In 1996, director  Danny DeVito  brought Matilda to life in a fantasy comedy film that stayed true to the novel's essence. Starring  Mara Wilson  as the titular character, the film received positive reviews for its faithfulness to the source material and DeVito's direction. While it may not have been a box office blockbuster initially, Matilda succeeded in the home entertainment market, becoming a beloved classic on VHS.

Matilda the Musical

The journey of Matilda's adaptation continued with the creation of  Matilda the Musical , featuring music and lyrics by  Tim Minchin  and a book by  Dennis Kelly . Premiering in the West End in 2011 and later on Broadway in 2013, the musical garnered widespread acclaim and box-office success. Its innovative storytelling and stellar performances earned it numerous awards, including Olivier and Tony Awards.

Film adaptation of the musical

In 2022, Matilda the Musical returned to the silver screen in a film adaptation that delighted fans in the United Kingdom and the United States. The film's release marked another chapter in Matilda's enduring legacy, bridging the gap between literature, film, and musical theatre.

Matilda's journey from Roald Dahl's imagination to the pages of a novel, the big screen, and the Broadway stage is a testament to the enduring appeal of her story. Whether experienced through the pages of a book, the scenes of a film, or the melodies of a musical, Matilda remains a timeless and inspiring figure for generations to come.

REVIEW: “Matilda: The Musical” is a must-see modern classic

Matilda

This RSC production is packed with stage magic, affecting performances, and a classic story fit for all ages.

Little kids declaring they’re miracles begin Matilda , adapted from a Roald Dahl classic of the same name. But the true miracle is that Manila audiences can watch the Royal Shakespeare Company production of this much-lauded musical; the same version that’s currently at Cambridge Theatre on the West End and winner of countless Tony’s and Olivier’s.

With a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, the stage craftsmanship (directed by Matthew Warchus) is in full swing at the Theatre at Solaire, with performances that delight, and then sear, and then linger, days after you’ve seen the show. It is bursting with color and humor that will tickle younger audiences, but serves up warmth and emotion that will tug at the heartstrings of their adult companions.

Matilda

Matilda (Sofia Poston), unplanned and unwanted, takes solace in books and her own rebellion. Sent to a school with a frightening bully of a headmistress, she remains brave and defiant. But she’s five, and can’t go at it alone. In comes Miss Honey (Haley Flaherty), a wisp of a woman who finds inner strength to fight for this little girl, and ultimately, herself.

The show’s big scenes are a riot, from “School Song”, a jaw dropping alphabet number where Crunchem Hall students warn its newcomers the living hell they’re about to enter, to the rollicking rock number “Revolting Children” featuring the ensemble dancing on and around their desks (choreography by Peter Darling).

It also has an assemblage of colorful characters, caricatures befitting their origins as children’s book characters. The most detestable of them is Miss Trunchbull, although Hayden Tee’s delectable performance makes the character seem even more larger than life, a gigantic Big Bad that makes the character’s eventual comeuppance all the sweeter.

Matilda

For all its bells and whistles, Matilda the Musical is also emotionally engaging. Flaherty’s stirring turn as Miss Honey made every moving song even more of a gut-punch, revealing the show to be just as much her own journey of escape, freedom, and eventually finding a family. It is so compelling that apart from the soaring “When I Grow Up”, “My House” is the show’s most affecting number.

If this version has deviations from its London counterpart, they are minor. The lack of child performers might be the most noticeable (with only 3-4 on stage a show, including Matilda). It’s not really a detriment, save for the adult actress (Taylor Salgado) playing Lavender whose portrayal of the five year old was utterly cartoonish.

This production of Matilda the Musical might be the most satisfying tour that’s docked on our shows as of late, or ever. It’s an absolute marvel. You will laugh, you will cry, you might just turn around and buy another ticket. It’s that good.

“No matter your size, you can make a big difference”: We speak to the actresses who star as Matilda in ‘Matilda: The Musical’

As the award-winning musical is set to return to Singapore, we speak to the actresses behind the titular character to get their thoughts on the role

“Even if you’re little, you can do a lot.” This poignant line from Matilda: The Musical, inspired by Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel, perfectly encapsulates the journey of the talented young actresses – Yolani Balfour, Donna Craig, and Myla Williams – stepping into the spotlight as Matilda in the award-winning musical.

Crafted with a book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda: The Musical narrates the tale of an extraordinary little girl armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind. She dares to take a stand, rewriting her destiny in the process.

matilda the musical journey theater

With the award-winning musical set to return to Singapore at the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands from 9 March 2024, we seized the opportunity to chat with the three actresses – Yolani, Donna, and Myla – about embodying the titular character.

These young powerhouses, who are full of resilience, intelligence, and boundless courage (just like Matilda!), share their insights into the process of bringing the character to life on stage with a refreshing (and very adorable) candour.

What inspired each of you to pursue a career in theatre at such a young age?

Myla : I have always loved performing and I have always wanted to perform form a very young age.

Yolani : The bug bit when I did a show for my Academy and I loved it. I was 7 years old.

Donna : My Mom is my main inspiration, as she was part of the entertainment industry herself.

matilda the musical journey theater

What excites you the most about performing in Matilda the Musical?

Myla : It is exciting to work on stage with other performers and to share the story of Matilda with the world. I have always loved the stories of Roald Dahl.

Yolani : The excitement of kids watching the show and knowing that I inspire some of them.

Donna : I just love sharing in the joy of live theatre, travelling Internationally, which takes us to so many amazing places, and experiencing so many new cultures.

How do you approach the process of portraying Matilda?

Myla : Thinking about the character and imagining her feelings and what her life would be like with such parents, a headmistress and a teacher like Miss Honey.

Yolani : I try not to be my happy, smiley self.

Donna : During my quiet time before the show, I focus on being Matilda.

Matilda is a symbol of empowerment and determination. How has portraying this character impacted each of you personally?

Myla : I have always been someone who stands up to things that aren’t right; being brave and not afraid to be myself and have my own opinions.

Yolani : It’s made me more determined to stand up for what’s right and not just for myself, but for others around me.

Donna : I feel I can achieve anything I put my mind to.

Myla: The experience of having a live audience interacting and acknowledging my performance is really special and fulfilling. Seeing and experiencing all the different cultures from all the countries we visit, is exciting for me.

Yolani: The thrill and excitement of the first ever show I did. And the travelling!

Donna: The most memorable moments on tour include Westend theatre shows, The Great Wall Of China, visits to the Burj Khalifa and Shanghai Disney Resort.

Can you share any specific challenges you faced in embodying Matilda’s spirit, and how did you overcome them?

Myla : It was challenging to not over express the character, as Matilda keeps all her feelings inside; and trusting that I do not have to do too much with the character. I feel this for me is still a work in progress.

Yolani : Trying not to laugh and smile while onstage!

Donna : I struggled with Matilda’s accent, so I had a dialect coach to help me during rehearsals.

What messages from the musical resonate with you the most?

Myla : “Even if you little you can do a lot…” the size of the person should not influence how much attention we pay to them. “That’s not right…” because Matilda has an internal compass for fairness just like me.

Yolani : You don’t have to have a lot to be happy.

Donna : No matter your size, you can make a big difference.
