Live reviews

I recently attended their performance at the EagleBank venue in Virginia, where they opened for Fall Out Boy and AWOL Nation. I had previously heard a few of their songs ("West End Kids", "Girl Crush"), so I knew about them, but was unsure of what to really expect. Once they performed, I was completely blown out of the water! Their energy and stage presence was absolutely incredible and the music was fantastic and fit well with the other acts! David Boyd's dancing was amazing and the band was energetic as well as exciting to watch. Despite some of the crowd's unfamiliarity with their music, everyone was singing along by the end of their set. The songs were well chosen and packed with a variety of songs, including ones from their new album. New Politics has made me an enormous fan in just a few songs! I can easily see New Politics as a headlining band and look forward to seeing more shows of theirs in the future!

I LOVE New Politics and saw them at Neumous February of 2014. They rocked just as hard last night and their performance was great with many of their new cuts from Vikings. This was, although, the most awkward of bands performing together. The Griswolds were amazing and we didn't expect them there, but it was as if there were two types of fans; rock and roll fans and romantic ballads fans. It was like going to see Barry Manilow open for the Rolling Stones! The most disappointing thing was when screaming my head off for an encore to hear Harlem, Andrew Mcmahon came back on stage to do an encore. Most of his fans had already left! We saw it as more of an egotistical move on his part and left the venue. I hope the next time I have the privilege of seeing New Politics that the other acts ate at least in the same category of music. LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

These guys leave it all on the stage! The first time I saw David Boyd, Søren Hansen, and Louis Vecchio was at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. Since we had never heard of them, we weren't expecting much out of them as an opener. Man what a surprise! The crowd, most of whom had no idea who this band was, rocked out right along with guys in the band. The music is catchy and along with their onstage antics these guys are irresistible! I have seen them multiple times in the past year and they never disappoint. The interaction with a crowd shows just how much they love performing. The now infamous "Boyding" is something to see! Great musicians with infectious energy and passion. Isn't that what you want out of a fantastic concert? Go check out a show. I promise they will do their best to entertain.

When I heard that New Politics was coming to Kansas City with Fall Out Boy, I jumped at the chance to buy tickets. As great as Fall Out Boy is, all I wanted to see was New Politics. They had come to the Kansas City area quite a few times, but I always had class or a test. Finally getting to see New Politics was absolutely amazing! David Boyd brought so much energy to the stage! I loved all of the dancing he did on stage. Not many artists can bring that much energy to the stage while they sing. Usually, dancing brings down the quality of the vocals, but David Boyd kept his vocals in check the whole time. Of course, his drummer and guitarist brought the energy, too, and made the experience incredible! I hope to see them again on their headline tour!

New Politics had a show with the wrecks & dreamers. BEST SHOW EVER!!!!!!!! New politics had energy like no tomrorow! They really are able to connect with the fans at any level. Literally back flipping off drum sets, breakdancing, stepping on fans, making the fans do whatever they wanted... just wow! David told us about his beautiful baby girl. To share what he values the most really just shows how much he loves his fans. The wrecks & dreamers also had energy like no tomorrow. All together, amaze balls! Literally woke up the next days so tired & I thought I left my feet at the venue because I jumped way too much. Literally cried at sorens touch of the piano. Everything just transition & blended beautifully ❤️

Ok so here we go on a roller coaster of words about how amazing this concert was. First off the opening bands were spectacular and probably will get their own tour soon, so good on NP for getting these wonders. Now New Politics, how do I even began to describe? This concert has left my ears ringing from the bad ass music and sheer energy from all the other fans. Also Im hoarse because of all the screaming at the top of my lungs because of the need to praise this weep worthy music. They have an unparalleled stage presence and an awe inspiring appreciation for each and everyone of their fans. I loved this show, I will go to every single one in my area, and I love this band.

I saw New Politics in a music festival, and they played like it was their own concert. The lead singer, David Boyd, was so high energy you were immediately drawn to everything he did. From standing (and singing and dancing) on top of the crowd, to doing back flips, to actually climbing up about 15 feet up the side of the stage, Boyd shows that he is a man of many talents. With their unique stunts, anthematic songs, and incredible talent New Politics apart from any other band I have seen or heard, and is easily one of the best rock bands to see live.

The Wrecks and Dreamers were outstanding warm-ups for New Politics who headlined their first show in the state after opening for 311 over the summer. New Politics played several songs form their latest Lost in Translation album while mixing in many of their hits from previous works. The put on a great show with multiple trips into the pit that reflected both the trust David Boyd has for his fans as well as their interest in interacting with the audience. I would travel for hours to see them again.

New Politics played Big Gig in Denver with 7 other bands. They were definitely a highlight for me! I LOVE THEM. All 3 band members are energetic and engaging and they sound absolutely AMAZING live. I will be seeing them several more times this year and I cannot wait. Love them! Fantastic show, amazing cover of Beastie Boys Sabotage - David Boyd is so charismatic and engaging; yes. One of my favorite bands xo

Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle join Biden for early Juneteenth celebration on White House lawn

Associated Press Economics Writer Joshua Boak. (AP Photo/J. David Ake)

  • Copy Link copied

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden celebrated the Juneteenth holiday early with a Monday concert on the White House South Lawn with singers including Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle.

“Black history is American history,” Biden told the crowd.

The Democratic president warned that some “old ghosts” in new clothes — a veiled reference to some of his Republican rivals — seek to take away their freedoms by making it harder for Black Americans to vote.

This year’s concert came as the presidential election is intensifying, with Black voters sure to play an important role. Biden won 91% of Black voters in 2020, according to AP VoteCast .

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, the former president, contends that more Black voters are turning his way . While Black Americans have consistently voted Democratic, minor changes in political loyalties or low turnout in key states could influence who wins in November.

The Juneteenth concert had blatant political overtones with emcee Roy Wood Jr., the comedian and actor, ticking through policy achievements by the Biden administration such as capping insulin prices and forgiving student debt.

Biden signed a law in 2021 that made June 19, or Juneteenth, a federal holiday. It commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free, more than two years after then-President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that liberated slaves in the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Generations of Black Americans have celebrated Juneteenth, which marks the enforcement of the proclamation in Texas with the Civil War ending in a Union victory.

Others at the White House event included singer and songwriter Raheem DeVaughn, gospel singer Kirk Franklin, rapper Doug E. Fresh, singer and songwriter Anthony Hamilton, singer and actress Patina Miller, country singer and songwriter Brittney Spencer, jazz musician Trombone Shorty and singer and songwriter Charlie Wilson.

There was a festive mood, with Vice President Kamala Harris dancing on stage with Franklin.

Harris, speaking at the concert, said this year’s Juneteenth will be a national day of action on voting, an effort to promote participation in the election and oppose efforts at voter suppression.

Nirvana co-founder Krist Novoselic launches new political party with live music twist

by Holly Menino, KOMO News Anchor

SEATTLE — 30 years after Nirvana ended Nirvana's bassist and co-founder is doing something new: launching a new political party.

"I've always been a music fan," said Nirvana Co-Founder Krist Novoselic. "I would listen to eight-track tapes with my dad since I can remember, and I would listen to all the great rock-and-roll music.

"Then I started making music and then we started this band and it was called 'Nirvana' and we just wanted to make music and not be mainstream to do something new and something different," Novoselic added. "We took the influences that we grew up with and we made this new kind of music."

Novoselic said Nirvana's history mirrors the goals of his new Cascade Party of Washington.

"It's not just a run-of-the-mill party," Novoselic said. "We're trying to do something different we're trying to be seminal, we're trying to break ground I'm also looking for something like that."

Novoselic said he's the party chair and part of the requirements to have a party is to host conventions and run a presidential ticket. To draw people to those conventions, he tapped his resources and started a new band called "The Bona Fide Band."

"Need to get 1,000 valid signatures to qualify as a bona fide party, so these shows are actually political conventions, but there's not going to be hardly any speeches from the stage," said Novoselic. "We're not going to go up there and clobber people with a bunch of rhetoric. Basically please sign the petition if you want to see a new party in Washington State."

And when it comes to the Presidential ticket, Novoselic is trying to get the rule changed.

"At this point, the rules say that we need to have a presidential ticket," he said. "We're determined not to be on the 2024 ballot and if that takes litigation we've got it all lined up."

We've done the research and we have the course of law behind us this is for speech, there's no statutory authority for this rule," Novoselic added. "That's another accomplishment that the Cascade Party seeks to do is to get rid of this rule. If this rule is gone then we've done a service to the voters in the state of Washington."

The Bona Fide band's first show is on June 20th at Easy Street Records in West Seattle. Then on June 21, the Bona Fide Band will play at World Music Day in Aberdeen.

"It's moving," said Novoselic. "I'm really looking forward to playing in Aberdeen and that's on June 21st on World Music Day. We're just going to make music and try to make people happy and entertain people."

"If it brings back memories and feelings for people, that's the magic of music," he added. "We're not going to contaminate that with politics. We're not going to make these political speeches."

This year marked 30 years since the untimely death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.

"It's bittersweet," Novoselic said when asked what it's like looking back on that time of his life. "When I think of when 'Nevermind' came out in 1991 and when Kurt died in 1994, that was like three years. It seems like that time span was 10 years there was so much going on it was so intense and then the way it ended it was devastating."

"There are the blessings: the music," Novoselic added. "The band just keeps getting more popular and there are Nirvana t-shirts everywhere. It's amazing."

On the anniversary of Cobain's death, Novoselic said he connected with former band members and Cobain's daughter, Frances.

"We just remembered and just connected and reflected," Novoselic said. "You survive and you just deal with it, and then you count your blessings and be positive for what you have and who you have. That's life."
