So, whether you're dreaming of a Caribbean beach or the historic streets of a European city, there's a destination waiting to help you shed off the winter layers and slip into something a little lighter instead.

In order to gain a general understanding, the flight prices below are estimated for departures from New York City. Keep in mind, however, that ticket and hotel prices can vary unexpectedly. With a climate hovering around 82 degrees Fahrenheit in December, Jamaica offers a warm escape. Traveling in the coldest winter months gives us something to look forward to, while the days get shorter. This is important for our emotional well-being, and our mental health!

The best places to travel this winter all have ideal weather for escaping northern cold winters, longer days and dry seasons. Check out my favorite winter destinations below, from the US, Europe and the Middle East, to Central and South America, Southeast Asia and South Asia.

Let’s heat up with these favorite winter vacation destinations!

I did a bunch of research lately because I wanted to know the definitive answers for the absolute warmest places in the US to take a trip to during the coldest winter months. My research led to some so-so answers (Phoenix, some parts of southern Texas, San Diego and Los Angeles, and New Orleans), but the two top answers were clear.

Miami & South Florida

Probably the best and easiest US destination with warm weather in winter time is Miami, which hands-down has the hottest climate of anywhere in the contiguous USA during the coldest months of January and February.

I’ve been to Miami in both November and December and can vouch for the fact that this is the city where the heat is on (thanks, Will Smith) even when there are blizzards up north, coating places like NYC with snow and ice.

In doing my own research to find the hottest places in the US that are ideal for winter getaways, Miami tops the climate charts at 74-75 degrees F as daily highs in Jan. and Feb.

A few of my favorite things to do in Miami are taking photos at the Wynwood art walls, eating Cuban food on Calle Ocho in Little Havana and doing my own self-guided art deco architecture walk in Miami Beach.

Hawaii will always be known for being America’s favorite vacation dreamland. It’s one of the warmest places to go in the US during December, January and February. In fact, from November to March, Hawaii is 75-80 degrees (on average, as it varies by islands and their southern or western sides).

Winter is the perfect time to escape the cold and get out to Hawaii. On the north shore of Oahu, waves get crazy big in the winter! This is great for adventurous surfers and spectators alike. Catch the surfing world cup (the Vans Pipe Masters) in December at Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline). In Honolulu, the waves on the south side of the island are super chill and relaxing in the winter.

Next, the days being shorter in December means you don’t have to wake up as early to catch a gorgeous Hawaiian sunrise (try Haleakala on Maui).

You can even enjoy temperatures of around 65 degrees at night in most of Hawaii during December, January and February after the sun goes down (which, in December, is around 5:45pm; compare this to 4:30 pm on a lot of the East Coast!). Also, no passport needed!

Remember to be a conscious and respectful traveler in Hawaii. It’s particularly important in regard to understanding the Hawaiian political history of colonization and militarization by the United State,s and the impact that tourists and gentrification have had on displacing native Hawaiians. Consider recent natural disasters as well, like the wildfires in Maui: make sure to be conscious and respectful of the impact on local communities this winter.

Europe (EU) & Middle East

We have tried for many years to find the warmest places for winter in all of Europe and the Middle East. Here’s what we found and where we’ve gone.

Canary Islands, Spain

Until recently, we did not know where the Canary Islands were, but as it turns out, we’ve now been there twice, both in winter and in summer. Travel to the Canary Islands during winter will give you the warmest destination possible within the EU, and we know this because we researched the topic in depth.

What we learned is that the south and east sides of Tenerife like at El Teide National Park and Gran Canaria get the most sun. These regions of the Canary Islands are warmest year-round.

In winter, check out the Maspalomas Dunes of Gran Canaria and the southern beaches of Tenerife to get your tan on and to see spectacular and unique volcanic scenery.

The Canary Islands are also a great destination for couples, as it’s helpful to rent a car and road trip around these islands. Super romantic, for adventurers!

Tel Aviv, Israel

You may not have pictured Israel as a winter beach destination, but if you go to Tel Aviv between December and February, you can enjoy sunny days with highs in the mid 70s and get some beach time.

Israel is a fantastic cultural destination with so much to see, all in compact distances. Escape the winter cold at the Dead Sea, where temperatures year round are in the 70s and 80s, and you can take a dip and float in the saltiest body of water on earth.

The cost of travel in Israel is a bit like traveling in Europe, so we recommend traveling with a friend or significant other with whom you can share a private room.

Note that the rest of Israel has tendencies to get a bit cool during winter, and Jerusalem can even see snow.

Tel Aviv, though, stays consistently in the 70s through much of winter, making it a great escape for European tourists and Israeli natives alike, along with travelers from around the world coming to see the gorgeous Mediterranean beach culture.

South America

South America (mostly all of it) gets its summer when the northern hemisphere experiences winter. This is technically true for South America south of the Equator, but luckily, countries like Colombia are warm all year round (save for elevated areas with high altitudes!).

Cartagena & Santa Marta, Colombia

You can usually find a cheap flight to Cartagena from various US cities if you choose to travel in January and February. If you only have time off in December, don’t worry!

Cartagena is a super affordable destination for travelers and it’s hot all year round. Temperatures are never lower than 85 F during daytime and 75 F at night, and with the humidity, it always feels warmer.

Cartagena and its nearby tropical island archipelagos have beautiful pristine beaches, lots of sun all winter long (dry season begins in February) and is an ideal winter vacation for couples, where a private room in a hostel will cost between $40 and $75 USD.

Staying in a hotel will cost between $100 and $200 USD in the mid-range, and there’s a lot of value here!

Santa Marta is an even more affordable destination because you can somewhat escape the tourist prices in Cartagena that cater to foreigners from all over the world. Santa Marta is a bit more laid back and authentic in its historic colonial center.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Argentina’s seasons are flipped with those north of the equator, so during December through February, the country enjoys its summer. Between these months, Buenos Aires, the capital city, gets highs in the 80s and lows in the high 60s at night.

Sounds beautiful to us, and it was (when we went)! Buenos Aires is a lively city teeming with culture and history.

We love the Buenos Aires outdoor cafe scene , the colors in La Boca, the tango dancing and the incredible architecture. Oh, and don’t forget the awesome nightlife scene. Argentina is surely a winter vacation idea for escaping the cold. Leave your coat at home!

Chile’s Coastline

Chile is a skinny country that will have its summer when the US and Canada have their coldest winter weather. Santiago, the capital city, has a daily average high temperature of 86 degrees F in January. Valparaiso, which has a Mediterranean climate, will have warm temperatures in the mid-70s during Jan-Feb.

The northern third of Chile has a “mild desert climate,” giving beaches like Viña del Mar high temperatures around 80 degrees in the warmest months.

West coast of Ecuador

Ecuador, a country that looks small on a map, lies at the Equator! Yes, Ecuador has warm places to travel all winter long.

Beware, though, because not every city in Ecuador is steamy hot. In fact, Ecuador is famous for packing all four seasons and countless types of climate regions into a single country that is about twice the size of Florida.

To get the warmest destinations in Ecuador, keep your travels to hug the Pacific coast, rather than venturing inland to areas that will quickly rise in elevation. For example, the capital city of Quito is several thousand meters above sea level and has an annual climate of a temperate Andean 66-68 degrees F on average, all year.

For the hottest places in Ecuador, check out Guayaquil, Playa Puerto Lopez, Mompiche and Montañita, a beach village popular with travelers.

Central America

Central America is known for being tropical, close to the US and Canada, and a fantastic place to plan your winter travel!

In fact, for many years (and still to this date), I focused on having a winter getaway to Central America specifically. During these travels, I took trips to Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, from November to March (with most of those trips in January and February).

The Yucatan Peninsula & Tulum, Mexico

One of our favorite winter weekend getaways from NYC is the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

You can also save money traveling this winter by flying into Cancun from major US cities and then hopping a bus immediately to less touristy cities like Valladolid or Merida .

Even if you want to go to a different part of the Yucatan like Merida, Isla Holbox or Playa del Carmen, take that nonstop flight from any international airport and you can get on an easy ADO bus to your destination when you land.

We loved exploring the cenotes outside Tulum by bicycle and seeing the clear water, which is so warm it feels like a bath. We also liked day trips like Uxmal , the Mayan ruins site outside Merida. Both are great options for seeing culture.

Our favorite part of traveling in Mexico might be the tacos, so get your stomach ready for some great flavors. Temperatures are always around the mid-80s during winter months of December to February, and nights are rarely lower than the mid-60s.

Having taken my glorious winter trip to Guatemala in January, I’ll vouch for the T-shirt-friendly weather that had me wearing a shirt and shorts visiting the enchanting Mayan ruins of Tikal and the incredible natural landscape at Semuc Champey.

Winter is Guatemala’s dry season, so you can unabashedly enjoy dry weather, sunny days, temperatures in the 80s. I recommend a stay in Antigua , as most travelers often opt for! During winter, you can soak up Vitamin D in the 74-77 degree air at any of Antigua’s rooftop cafes and coffee shops , which is a total treat.

I’ve also been to Guatemala in April, and that was nice, too! A city like Antigua is a great choice of a destination for all year round. Having been there both in winter and spring, I can say it’s an excellent escape from the snow and blizzards at home in the US. I had an awesome time in Panama, one of my favoriate budget-friendly destinations in December! I spent time in all three parts of the Panamanian trifecta: in the mountains, at Boquete, at the beach, in Bocas del Toro and in the city in Panama City and Casco Viejo (the most beautiful historic quarter).

I was surely wearing a summer dress and a tank top and shorts at the beacn in Bocas, and while walking around Panama City, visiting the Panama Canal, in winter. Temperatures remain in the mid-80s or high 70s for December, January and February, and there’s a slight breeze.

At coasta locations like Bocas del Toro on the Carribean side, temperatures are 84-86 degrees year round, in fact! Nights may see the mid-60s, so bring a light coat and one pair of pants.

If you want to stay away from cold temperatures completely during your winter getaway, then stay away from the altitudes in Panama. The week before Christmas, I climbed the tallest volcano in Panama (Volcan Baru) and at the top, it was absolutely freezing! As we descended, though, it was sweaty all the way down in the sun.

Nicaragua is a fun place to go, and judging by the killer temperatures I had there in April (mid-90s… too hot!), I’d advise visiting this lovely Central American nation between November and March.

The best time to visit Nicaragua is indeed during winter, as the dry period falls between December and April. It’ll be wettest, with storms brewing in the Gulf of Mexico, during May to November, so conveniently, this is the less desirable time to go.

For winter climate averages, December to February is coolest, which provides some respite for those extreme high temps I experienced during my (potentially badly planned) trip in April. If I could do it again, I’d go to Nicaragua in December, January or February, especially as a break from the coldest temperatures at home.

For what to see in Nicaragua, check out a few of my favorite destinations: San Juan del Sur, Granada and Leon. I was charmed by the west coast Pacific sunsets and by the colorful vibrant personalities of these historic and colonial cities.

I took my trip to Costa Rica smack in the middle of December and it was bathing suit weather the whole time (on the coast). If you are looking for cooler temperatures (AKA a way to not lose your mind in your sweat), stick to the inland areas for ecotourism like Arenal and Monteverde.

If you do want to get your suntan on and go hiking in a bathing suit, check out year-round hot areas like Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo and Parque Nacional Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast.

Beware of the Costa Rica humidity: this is not a place to smooth out the frizz in your hair!

El Salvador

El Salvador is somewhere I’d really like to go during winter because of its tropical location on the west side of the Central American region. With beaches for surfing and the Ruta de las Flores hiking, it seems like a varied destination for winter travel that’ll be warmer than your home city this time of year.

Between November and March, El Salvador has its winter, but strangely, temperatures peak in April. This being said, in the months leading up to April (January-February-March), daily temperatures are in the 80s and the nights can be nice and cool in the mid-60s.

El Salvador’s tropical climate has its rainy season from around May to August, so by heading there during winter as a vacation destination, you’ll be experiencing the country in its driest period.

Belize has some of the best temperatures for a winter vacation: I don’t Belize you! (Ha ha)

Incredibly, Belize in winter (December to February) won’t make you sweat so much that you’ll want to escape to A/C: no, no, quite the contrary. The winter temperatures in this Caribbean and Central American destination hover in the 70s for much of the winter due to weather patterns in the Gulf of Mexico.

This being said, gorgeous destinations in Belize like Caye Caulker, San Ignacio, Tobacco Caye and the Great Blue Hole will have some of their driest weather between December, January, February and March.

Belize is a pretty adventurous travel destination , so go see for yourself!

Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a big place, full of amazing places to see. Lots of Southeast Asia will be hot during the northern hemisphere winter, but not all of them . Read on to see the hottest places in Southeast Asia during winter.

When talking about Vietnam as a winter destination, we have to be a little bit careful: Vietnam is a L O O O N G country, much like California is a long (tall?) state, and temperatures are very different at the top (near China) and the bottom (tropical, near the Gulf of Thailand).

I have been to Vietnam twice in winter (January to be exact, and twice!) and have spent time in the north, central regions and the south. If you really want the “sweat your face off in Southeast Asia experience,” you’ll stick to the south.

The north isn’t all too “cold” in winter, though. Hanoi, the capital city, will be 68-70 in winter. I was able to wear a sundress on some days, and just took a jean jacket with me in my backpack for the day.

Go to central Vietnam in winter, though, and Hoi An (one of my favorite destinations!) will give you daytime highs of 77-79. In thes outh, Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) is even warmer, with daytime highs anywhere between the mid 80s to potentially low 90s in December, January and February. No sweater needed!

Having spent a month in Vietnam in Hanoi, I can surely tell you how cool of a country it is. If you have the time (two weeks, or three), it’s great to explore of all the gorgeous scenery and culture inside Vietnam. The food is some of my favorite in all my travels, and that says a LOT.

Thailand may seem like an obvious choice for a destination to beat the winter blues, but my advice is to consider that only the southern half of Thailand is going to truly be insanely hot during the winter months of December through March.

Take it from me: having been to Thailand three times during winter, I have sweated my face off in the islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and I have frozen my feet off while trekking in the hills outside Chiang Mai in January, with lows of 44 F and no heat!

Given this, my immediate recommendation for visiting Thailand in winter is to fly into Bangkok, warm up at the beaches that are closer to the Bangkok region like Pattaya, and then, if you have five to ten days for your itinerary, head down to the islands via train or flight, hitting Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Koh Phi Phi. If you’re so inclined, spend some time on the famed beaches of Phuket to see what that’s all about.

I personally love the north of Thailand, and spent time up there in winter (January to be precise). Temperatures in Chiang Mai may be as high as 88-91 during January and February, and 84 in December. Nights will be down in the high 50s because of the dryness in the air. If you want to avoid the chilly weather of the mountains, stay at lower altitudes, because mountain treks will have nights in the 40s.

I have only taken a trip to Cambodia once, but it was in January-February, so I have a pretty good handle on the temperatures in Colombia in the “coldest” of the Northern Hemisphere winter months.

A winter in much of Cambodia is daily temperatures in the 80s and 90s, and nights in the 60s or 70s. It is quite beautiful. I remember getting so hot seeing the temples of Angkor Wat that my friends and I needed a siesta break in the middle of the day to beat the heat with cold drinks and resting.

If you want a sure way of finding hot weather and sun, head to Cambodia’s south coast to visit its famous coastline that has had tons of development in the last decade. The most famous destinations are Sihanoukville and the surrounding beaches.

Don’t worry, though, if you’re not a beachgoer, cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (along with the boat ride from one to the other) will keep your skin glowing with the tropical warmth. Nights are rarely cool enough to require a layer on top of a T-shirt, and sunny days during the winter dry season will keep rain away.

The Philippines

Can you tell already that I love traveling in winter to escape the cold? I’ve been to the Philippines not once, but twice, over Christmas, and can vouch that this is a HOT place to travel in.

January is the coolest month in the Philippines, but that doesn’t say much for a country that often has average highs at 90 degrees F most of the year. Destinations like Boracay have tropical climates that let temperatures, even in January and February, settle at 86 degrees F.

Dry season is from December to April or May, so by planning your travels for January, February or March, you’ll avoid typhoons completely and experience fewer rains than other times of year.

Malaysia comes in two halves, and both are warm in winter! This country located right above the Equator is tropical and a lot of fun to travel in!

I’ve been to Malaysia twice, spending time in Kuala Lumpur and Penang (my favorite). In December, January and February, Penang will have highs between 88 and 90 degrees, and Kuala Lumpur will be much the same, at 89-91. With nights in the 70s in both, and for basically the entire year, this such a nice winter getaway!

Also, if anything … go for the food. Malaysian food is incredible. Just look at this photo of my bowl of cold cendol (a sweet soupy and icey dessert to keep you cool in the heat, with jellies and a ton of coconut milk). YUM!

Would you have ever thought of a winter trip to Singapore? It’s a good idea for escaping winter and getting your fill of a tropical getaway! In December through February, Singapore days will be about 88 degrees and nights are only 76!

If you saw Crazy Rich Asians (the movie), you probably saw the scenes of eating in the hawker market. This is one of the best things to do in Singapore, and it’s a Singapore tradition to visit all the stalls to see what you want to eat, and then sweat while digging in!

What I like about Singapore is how clean it is. During my trip, I took the Singapore metro (MRT), visited Chinatown, went to rooftop bars with my friend who lived there at the time and tried LOTS of amazing food! I also liked Little India, as the city has such a mix of cultures.

The driest winter month is February, so that would be a great time to go and enjoy the warm temperatures.

Indonesia’s Many Islands

Indonesia is an island nation that has a tropical climate that keeps its temperatures warm all year (save for some elevated areas with high altitudes that would be inland). You’ve likely heard about Bali by now, and Bali makes a great destination for winter time, but did you know that Indonesia has other places to visit that are great ideas for escaping winter?

Visit Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok and Medan, and don’t underestimate the beauty in the Gili Islands, West Java and South Sumatra. Beware that the hottest month in Indonesia is actually October, so traveling in the months that follow mean very warm days in the 80s.

Lots of South Asia will be hot during winter, so it is a great region to travel and explore in December, January, February and March.

Sri Lanka’s Southeast and West Coasts

Sri Lanka is a tropical island located south of India. It is a lovely place to plan a one-week or two-week winter getaway, and temperatures remain tropical all winter long due to its location close to the Equator and in the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka does in fact have some elevated areas in its center, which will get chilly due to altitude at any time of year. For keeping your trip completely warm and hot, stick to the coasts, visiting Colombo, Galle Fort and the east coast beaches for surfing.

Southern & Southwestern India

The hottest places in India in winter are going to be the west and southern coast (think Mumbai-Maharashtra and Kochi-Kerala) and the southeastern provinces like Tamil Nadu.

Take Chennai, for example, on India’s east coast, which will have winter temperatures ranging from the high 80s to real feels of 90s during the daytime, even in February. And Goa, India’s famed beachgoer paradise on the mid-west coast, with temperatures in the mid-80s and an ocean temperature of around 82 degrees F. Sounds like bathwater.

India is also one of the most affordable places to travel in , and you’ll see when you get there that there is a huge bang for your buck.

While not entirely tropical, there are a few exciting travel destinations in East Asia that are warmer than others. Let’s see which ones make the cut for the warmest places in East Asia during winter.

Hong Kong & Macau

Although it’s far from North America and from Europe, Hong Kong is a worthwhile place to spend a winter getaway and it never disappoints.

Most North American and European citizens do not need a visa to get to Hong Kong, so you can show up when you want! For Hong Kong, a city with a scorching summer reaching the 90s and with humid, wet weather, winter months present an amazing time to visit.

Your escapes from the heat are getting on a junk boat and walking around at night .

Hong Kong winter, between December and February, is the driest time of year, so you’ll avoid all types of monsoons and storms. Humidity dies down, and days are comfortable in the 70s, with nights in the mid-to-high 60s.

If you’re interested in visiting Macau (also spelled “Macao”), note that it has largely the same warm climate pattern as Hong Kong, being only an hour away by ferry. Macau has an incredible mix of east and west because of its Portuguese colonial roots. You can see this European history, meshed with that of China, apparent in the unique Macanese cuisine and architecture of Macau.

The Caribbean Islands

The Caribbean will always be a good choice for American and Canadian travelers seeking some winter sun during the coldest months of the year.

What’s stopping you from an easy warm getaway to the Caribbean islands during December, January and February? Start planning with these winter escape ideas below.

Cabarete & the North Coast of the Dominican Republic

Punta Cana’s white beaches and turquoise seas are probably what you think of when you think of spending the worst of winter in the Dominican Republic.

It’s what we think of, too, but it isn’t how we wanted to experience a trip to this country that sits rather close to the continental US. We opted for a trip to explore the sights and beaches of Cabarete and the Dominican Republic North Coast instead.

The good news for this destination as your winter getaway is that it doesn’t come at the price of a 4- or 5-star resort. In fact, you can stay in budget accommodations that bring you close to nature and other backpackers. In Cabarete alone, there’s Ali’s Surf Camp (also known as Surf Camp Cabarete), a nearby hostel and a few Airbnbs.

We opted for a combination of both, between our travels that ranged from Puerto Plata to Rio San Juan, by comparing accommodation options .

For fun ways to get around, there are the local guaguas. These are sure to give you an authentic and semi-crowded Dominican transit experience. The great thing is that they cost between $1 to $2 USD per trip! It’s great value for your money, because other things like private taxi rides don’t come cheap.

There’s lots to do in surf paradises like Cabarete. For coffee lovers, you can visit the local cafe scene .

For the more adventurous type, you can check out some unusual and unique things to do in Sosua and Puerto Plata .

Temperatures range from 65F at night to 85F during the day (it can feel warmer in the sun, but cools down by sunset and it’s pretty temperate).

Given that Jamaica is located in the Caribbean and you’ll want to avoid all of hurricane season completely, visiting this island in the winter time is the best idea. From January to February, Jamaica will have temperatures in the 80s, and this is the “coolest” time of year to visit the tropical island.

What’s there to do in Jamaica? Aside from the well-known destinations of Montego Bay and Negril, there’s Ocho Rios, Kingston, Blue Lagoon and Pelican Bar.

It’s easy to get a flight to Jamaica from the US or Canada.

Africa is far for most travelers coming from North America and Europe, but it is worth the trip. Much of Africa remains warm throughout the year, which makes the African continent a great idea for traveling in November, December, January, February and March.

Zambia & Victoria Falls

Due to being in the southern hemisphere, Zambia, a country in southern Africa, has a subtropical climate that will get you an 87-degree (Fahrenheit) day at Victoria Falls (one of the seven greatest natural wonders of the world).

Pair a trip to Zambia with a trip to Namibia, Botswana or South Africa, and you’ll be able to have a two-week bender seeing the best of Africa during winter in outrageously warm weather.

If you do make it to Zambia, be sure to go for a river cruise on the Zambezi River, trying local brews and seeing hippos with your boat driver and guide.

South Africa

Beautiful South Africa is an excellent choice for a winter trip, as the country is in the Southern Hemisphere and will experience the height of its summer during December, January and February.

Catch a safari, see the beaches in Cape Town, visit wineries in Stellenbosch and hang out in Pretoria, all in temperatures like 80-85 degrees F during the day.

I f you need one, February offers plenty of reasons to travel. There’s the half-term holiday with the kids, the Valentine’s getaway with the other half, or the simple desire to escape the dreariness of the northern hemisphere winter. Average temperature 20C At the foot of the Baja California peninsula in northwestern Mexico , these two towns — glam Cabo San Lucas and more authentic San Jose del Cabo — head up an area of white-sand beaches, fine hotels and an arid, cacti-dotted interior. As one of the cooler months, February is a good bet for physical activities — from guided hikes through Sierra de la Laguna to jet-skiing or kitesurfing — and peak season for boat trips (from La Paz) to spot whale sharks and baby humpback whales. Yellowtail is the main target for sport-fishers at this time, while riding on the beach is also popular. Best of all, you’ll dodge the inevitable price hikes and large crowds that appear when North American students flood in for March and April’s raucous spring-break parties.

2. zanzibar, tanzania.

Average temperature 28C Zanzibar sizzles in February, which is ideal for visitors planning to spend most of their time horizontal — be it swimming in the bath-warm Indian Ocean, bronzing on a powdery white shore or getting massaged at a beach resort. Snorkelling is another option: Chumbe Island’s protected reef is seemingly home to fish of every shape and colour. Some verticality is required during dolphin-watching boat tours, but you can always float in the pool afterwards. For the more energetic, it’s near-essential to stroll around the capital’s narrow-laned, Unesco-listed Stone Town quarter, past Persian bathhouses, Swahili restaurants, coral-stone houses and Freddie Mercury’s birthplace. February brings the Sauti za Busara music festival: four rhythmic days of African jazz and local taarab shows in Stone Town’s Old Fort.

3. Cambodia

Average temperature 24C In March, Cambodia swelters. That’s fine if you’re staying at one of its growing collection of island-based beach retreats — from rustic, affordable eco-lodges on Koh Rong to the more opulent likes of Song Saa — but less ideal for sightseeing at the southeast Asian country’s headline act. Touring the former Khmer capital of Angkor and its incredible ninth to 15th-century temples can be hot work, especially if you’re climbing Ta Keo’s steps or scrambling over huge roots at tree-hugged Ta Prohm in high humidity. Early to mid February offers a far milder heat, including for those early risers watching sunrise over Angkor Wat — the fairest and largest temple of them all. Additionally, there will be higher water levels on the Tonle Sap River to aid cruises from capital Phnom Penh, or perhaps even Vietnam .

Average temperature 24C February is peak season in the Caribbean and promises perfect, dry weather for snorkelling, swimming or simply sunbathing on fudge-hued shores — and sufficiently cool days for exploring historic plantations and waterfall hikes inland. All of that is possible in Jamaica , whose popular tamarind fruit is in season and whose visitors are deliciously ruffled by gentle daytime winds known as the “doctor breeze”. The island then throws a cherry on top. Falling on February 6, Bob Marley’s birthday is marked by everything from concerts to fashion parades, chiefly in Kingston and Negril. 5. Easter Island, Chile

Average temperature 23C As summer ends on Easter Island — or Rapa Nui, as the locals call it — flights stay regular as temperatures revert from sweltering to tolerable. The big draw on this Chilean territory, more than 2,000 miles west and a six-hour flight from mainland South America, are its hundreds of monumental, monolithic moai statues. Supposedly carrying the spirits of ancestors, many of these huge-headed stone figures were placed on platforms around the island’s perimeter — a mind-boggling feat given their weight. Spot some as you hike a bright-green Pacific coastal path; other things to do are surfing, diving to see submerged moai and, in February, attending the two-week Tapati festival. A blend of dancing and singing competitions alongside horse racing, triathlons and other traditional sporting events, it’s an excellent way to sample the local Polynesian culture.

Average temperature 21C Though it flies under the average tourist’s radar, there’s lots to like about a holiday in Senegal — from a cool contemporary art scene and Saint-Louis’s sun-baked colonial architecture to golden beaches and spicy eats. The west African country’s surfing scene is especially good, for beginners or veterans alike, and February — with no rain, much sun and very bearable heat — is the optimum time to ride the waves. Stay at a solar-powered lodge such as N’Gor Island Surf Camp near the capital, Dakar, and you could also journey southeast for a safari in the Niokolo-Koba National Park. It’s open from mid-December until April 30 and hugs the Gambia River, and its forests are home to hippos, crocodiles, lions, leopards, warthogs and elephants. If that’s too far to go, opt for a birdwatching boat journey along the mangrove-snagged Casamance Delta instead.

7. Singapore

Average temperature 27C Far more than just a stopover, Singapore might even have too much to do. Hawker centres around the city provide contenders for the world’s best street food (Liao Fan’s Hawker Chan at 335 Smith Street has previously won a Michelin star), while some of Asia’s premier cocktails are consumed in bars here. That includes the Raffles hotel’s Long Bar, home of the Singapore Sling. Singapore’s vertical gardens and futuristic developments impress, as do nature reserves housing saltwater crocodiles and macaque monkeys. In February, amid warm and mostly dry weather, there’s usually an added attraction: the arrival of lunar new year. Tending to fall in this month, it involves colourful parades and many a costumed, pugilistic lion dance in Chinatown. Book your stay well in advance if your visit falls around then.

8. Melbourne, Australia

Average temperature 21C All of Australia enjoys sunshine during February — with even Melbourne and its notoriously temperamental climate likely to bask. With very little rainfall likely, the city’s buzzing, café-lined laneways are at their most vibrant; so too the many rooftop bars, such as laid-back Good Heavens, and gorgeous parks. Barbecues are ten a penny, as are cricket games; just try not to mention the Ashes. It’s a fine time to catch a concert at the free St Kilda Festival, or to rummage around independent clothes and homeware stores in the hip suburb of Richmond. Most of all, though, try to do as the locals do — namely, decamp an hour’s drive south to the eucalyptus-scented Mornington Peninsula, where calm, sandy beaches and informal but high-quality vineyard restaurants await.

9. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Average temperature 20C A more authentic alternative to Dubai, the UAE ’s capital city of Abu Dhabi is home to numerous treasures. Top trump, arguably, is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque; not only one of the world’s largest Islamic places of worship, but beautiful thanks to dazzlingly white domes and minarets. Similarly eye-catching are the island-set Louvre Abu Dhabi, which aims to bridge the gap between eastern and western art, and indoor theme park Ferrari World, devoted to Italy’s most famous fast car. A couple of hours’ drive east is Al Ain, a Unesco-protected garden city whose largest oasis contains 147,000 date palms; nearby are ancient, distinctive beehive tombs reckoned to be about 5,000 years old. They’re far more fun to visit in February than summer, when the mercury can rise above 40C.

10. Kruger National Park, South Africa

Average temperature 26C Kruger National Park in South Africa is arguably Africa’s most reliable national park when it comes to sightings of the big five and other popular beasts. So while February’s dense vegetation makes things harder, your odds remain excellent. That greenery yields an upside too, as the park never looks more lush and photogenic. This is also the season when many baby animals arrive on the scene and when birding is at its best thanks to the arrival of migratory species. Try, if you can afford it, to stay on an adjacent private reserve such as Sabi Sands or Timbavati: the guiding quality will be better, there will be fewer other visitors and you’ll be permitted to go off-road (unlike in the main park) in search of those elusive animals — a crucial advantage.

11. Lanzarote, Spain

Average temperature 18C Keen on escaping to somewhere sunny over February half-term, but less so on a long flight? Getting to Lanzarote takes just over four hours from London and you can expect seven daily hours of sun on average. There are theme parks and family-friendly beach resorts aplenty, especially on the south coast. But try also to explore this Canary Island’s bumpy geography. Walking some of the Cueva de Los Verdes’s four-mile lava tube (a cave created by lava flows 3,000 years ago) should delight youngsters, as will deep craters amid Timanfaya National Park and its hundreds of volcanoes. Should parents need a hedonistic break, it’s usually easy to hire a babysitter and journey to one of the main malvasia vineyards for a tour and tasting session.

12. The Philippines

Average temperature 27C Palawan’s longstanding tagline as the Philippines ’ last frontier made sense two decades ago, but thanks to social media, the whole world now knows about how beautiful it is. Luckily Palawan’s archipelago contains more than 1,700 isles to accompany its namesake main one, and still has the potential for escapism. Visitors might go diving on eco-spirited Pangalusian, meet monkeys on Coron, tour pearl farms on Large Bulucan or settle into luxury life on private Pamalican, where Aman operates a resort. With lagoons, street parades, rice terraces and wreck dives, the El Nido area of Palawan still has the most rounded offering, however.

13. Mendoza, Argentina

Average temperature 25C Alongside steaks and dulce de leche, Argentina ’s most famous gastronomic item is malbec. The bold, plummy red grape is harvested across this vast South American country, but its hub is the western province of Mendoza thanks to oh-so-fertile Andean foothills below mighty Mount Aconcagua. Drive or cycle its gorgeous Provincial Route 89, aka “the Wine Road”, and then Route 40, and stop at terraced vineyards and bodegas for tastings or delicious meals. In February, everyone will be excited ahead of March’s harvest, making it a thrilling time to visit.

14. Durban, South Africa

Average temperature 25C Facing the deep blue of the Indian Ocean, Durban has all the glitz and glam of a coastal metropolis while still retaining its wild side. High-rises and luxury hotels line its coast, but it’s not unusual to spot dolphins swimming alongside sea kayakers or vervet monkeys hanging from the trees. There’s a strong Indian influence here, thanks to the generations who came through work and trade, which is most obvious when you walk through the busy Victoria Street Market or order a bunny chow (bread filled with curry). The city also makes a fantastic jumping-off point for safaris in KwaZulu-Natal province; private game reserves dominate here, and Thanda is particularly excellent on the conservation front.

15. New Orleans, US

Average temperature 14C If it’s a party you’re looking for, New Orleans comes alive for Mardi Gras season every February. The exact date changes every year, but there are festivities for a whole month leading up to the big day so you can certainly get into the spirit of things even if you’re not there for the main event. There’s plenty to keep you busy here, from soaking in the charm of the French Quarter and bar-hopping down Frenchmen Street to browsing the galleries and museums of the Arts and Warehouse District. And then of course there’s the food, with sugar-dusted beignets an essential.

16. Turks and Caicos

Average temperature 25C A British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean, Turks and Caicos is now easier than ever to get to thanks to a new flight route with Virgin Atlantic. Like other parts of the Caribbean, February means plenty of sun and little rain, making this a great fly and flop option. But why would you, when a barrier reef here means a kaleidoscope of marine life that’s ripe for snorkelling and diving, while the consistent winds make kiteboarding and windsurfing hugely popular? Further offshore, this time of the year is also when whales are at their most numerous.

Here are 10 suggestions for quintessentially European things to see and do in the colder months.

Winter comes in many guises in Europe . In the polar north there’s serious snow, the northern lights and weeks without sun. Around the mild Mediterranean, you’ll find lingering warmth well into the season. And in the center of Europe: cozy cafe culture and halls decked with Christmas spirit.

It’s an inspiring time to visit grand cities, charming villages and cultural sites. With fewer queues, you can fit more into your itinerary, and off-season prices make European accommodation wallet-friendly in November, December, January and February. Using Europe’s train network you can explore countries at your leisure, and it’s easier to meet locals outside the often-frenetic summer tourist season. 

1. Drink glühwein at Christmas markets in Germany or Austria

December sees these romantic historic markets pop up all over Germany , Austria and other Central European nations. Expect cute stalls selling everything from gingerbread to sleigh bells, and plenty of good cheer, toasted with a glass of warming glühwein .

Top tip: Famous markets in Cologne , Vienna and Munich draw the tourist crowds, but seeking out ones in smaller towns is rewarding.

2. Warm up at one of Budapest’s famous thermal bathhouses

Couples skating hand-in-hand, breath cloudy in the frosty air – there’s nowhere better for it than the enormous outdoor ice rink in Budapest’s picturesque central park, Városligeti Műjégpálya . Feeling chilly afterward? Hungary’s capital is famous for its ornate thermal baths .

Top tip: At night seek out a ‘ ruin pub ’– an atmospheric drinking venue artfully housed in a once-abandoned building.

3. Witness the northern lights in Abisko, Sweden

Located almost as far north as you can get in Europe on a train,  Abisko in Lapland is for lovers of serious winter. The sun doesn’t rise for several weeks in December and January, but that darkness makes it one of the world’s best places to view the majestic aurora borealis (northern lights). Other attractions include cross-country skiing along national park trails and husky mushing.

Top tip: Stop off at nearby Kiruna to see the famous Swedish Icehotel .

4. Steel-gray skies set the mood in Transylvania, Romania

You can’t visit Dracula’s lair on a sunny day with lambs bleating in the fields, right? You want steel-gray skies, bare trees and a smattering of snow. Braşov and Sighişoara , two hours apart by rail, are gorgeous medieval towns with various connections to Vlad Ţepeş, the historical Dracula, though it’s doubtful he ever set foot in his so-called castle.

Top tip: Bram Stoker never visited Romania , so don’t expect many parallels with the book or films.

5. Bask in the sunshine in Andalucía, Spain

Some parts of Andalucía are further south than the African coast, so expect mild temperatures in winter . Accommodation is cheap and crowds are smaller at standout attractions like Granada’s Alhambra and Seville’s cathedral . Plus, tapas and nightlife in the cities are as enticing as ever.

Top tip: Head to the Sierra Nevada near Granada if you want snowsport action.

6. Have the best sites in Athens (almost) to yourself

It’s a real downer trying to Photoshop 500 people out of your would-be-prizewinning Parthenon photo, but during the winter in Athens , it’s not an issue. All summer stresses – crowding, tourist pricing, intense heat, queues, air pollution – more or less disappear. The average temperature during the winter is around 13ºC (55ºF). It’s the best time to explore the country’s ancient heritage and experience local culture.

Top tip: By all means do some island-hopping, but most accommodations close in winter.

7. Hit the slopes at Jasná, Slovakia’s best ski resort

Slovakia offers high-quality skiing at affordable prices . Accommodation and food are reasonable too, and there’s a friendliness that’s missing from some of the snootier Alpine slopes. Jasná is the best Slovakian resort, with long descents flanked by snow-laden spruce trees, set in the ruggedly lovely Tatras Mountains.

Top tip: Flights from the US direct to Slovakia can be pricey, so don’t make this your entry point to Europe.

8. Expect snow flurries and fairytales in Copenhagen, Denmark

For a fairytale European winter, it’s hard to beat the home of Hans Christian Andersen . Forget the over-hyped Little Mermaid and head to the city’s cozy bars and cafes to watch snow flurrying outside. In the heart of town, the 19th-century Tivoli amusement park is a romantic, kitsch delight around Christmastime, with heartwarming illuminations and body-warming mugs of glögg (mulled wine).

Top tip: Noma may have closed but Copenhagen still has an incredible restaurant scene. Go for broke at Alchemist , widely considered one of the world's best restaurants. (Book three months in advance and set aside 4–6 hours.)

9. Visit the unofficial home of Santa Claus in Rovaniemi, Finland

Fistfuls of Christmas clichés characterize Rovaniemi , the ‘official’ terrestrial residence of Santa Claus. Everyone’s favorite bearded man hangs out in an atmospheric Arctic Circle grotto, and it’s free to visit him (but photos are another story). Snow and reindeer add festive spirit, while the Arktikum Museum gives insights into life at these latitudes.

Top tip: Finnish thermometers have more numbers below 32°F (0°C) than above, so pack serious winter clothing.

10. Be seduced by the incredible Carnival in Venice

Hauntingly beautiful and rather weird, Venice’s Carnival in February is a European highlight. Elaborate costumes and spooky masks bring the canal city’s colorful history to life. Costumed dances are pricey affairs, but you can have a ball enjoying the free events with a mask bought on the street – just be prepared for epic crowding.

Top tip: Book accommodation well ahead. Day-tripping in and out on a train will considerably lower costs.

Fewer crowds, Christmas markets, and even the chance to see the northern lights… here are some of the best places to visit in Europe in winter!

Whether you’re anxious to find some winter sun or experience the coziness of wrapping up while it snows outside, Europe in winter has so much to offer. Of course, I haven’t been able to visit all of the best places to visit in Europe in winter (yet), so I reached out to a few of my fellow bloggers for their suggestions!

Best Places to Visit in Europe in Winter: WESTERn Europe

Amsterdam, the netherlands.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands is one of the best places to visit in Europe winter. Although it’s not as famous as other European destinations, Amsterdam doesn’t get as cold as other European cities typically and winter has a lot of benefits, especially in terms of reduced crowds at many of the famous attractions.  If you’re truly lucky, you’ll get to see Amsterdam’s canals freeze with locals ice skating over them!

Notably, Amsterdam’s winter includes the stunning Amsterdam Light Festival when artists from all over the world are invited to create modern light-creations to be seen by boat, bike, and on foot throughout the city’s canals.  (My favorite way is by boat cruising the canals with a warm gluhwein in hand!) 

Beyond the light festival, you’ll find holiday cheer during early December, which is when the main December holiday in the Netherlands takes place.  Although Christmas is somewhat celebrated in the Netherlands, Sinterklaas is a popular children’s holiday with its own candy and sweets, such as oliebollen , to go along with it.   Shortly after, you’ll see Christmas markets popping up throughout the city center!  Winter culminates in New Year’s Eve, which is when the locals enjoy fireworks throughout the city center and along the IJ river.  January tends to be quieter, however it’s the perfect time to battle the crowds.

Geneva, Switzerland

Winter is a fantastic time to visit Geneva, Switzerland, whether you come for the many outdoor winter sports on offer or for one of the local festivals held at this time of year. If you can time your visit in mid-December, you’ll get to experience a very local tradition that only takes place in Geneva, called L’Escalade. It’s definitely one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter!

The word “escalade” means “climbing” in French, but this is not a rock climbing or mountaineering festival as you might expect. Instead, it commemorates an event that happened in 1602, when the Savoy army attempted to scale the city walls and lay siege to Geneva. The local inhabitants weren’t having it, though, and they rallied to defeat the attacking soldiers any way they could. According to legend, this even included a local housewife pouring hot soup over their heads.

Throughout the weekend-long event, battle reenactments are held in the Old Town, and historic buildings normally closed to the public are opened up for free guided tours. Festivities culminate with a torch-lit parade of locals dressed in period costumes from the 17th century.

But while the city is at its liveliest during the L’Escalade, things become very quiet over the Christmas and New Year holidays, just a couple of weeks later. Almost half of Geneva’s population is made up of expats, and many of them return home to spend the holidays with their families.

Those who do stick around tend to spend their time up in the nearby mountains on the ski slopes. Geneva sits within easy reach of two mountain ranges, the Alps and the Jura. For beginner skiers and snowboarders, the gentler slopes of the Jura are definitely the best option. This is also where you’ll find the best cross-country skiing trails. Experienced skiers, however, usually prefer the Alps. Many Swiss alpine resorts can be reached by train, and shuttle buses connect Geneva’s airport with  Chamonix and other ski resorts in the French Alps .

Lake District, England

The postcard views of snow-capped hills and mountains makes the Lake District one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter.

As a UNESCO world Heritage site, the Lake District boasts some of the most beautiful natural views in the world considered alongside famous locations such as the Taj Mahal, the Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon.

A dusting of snow and a sprinkling of ice transforms the peaks, fells and hills that makes for beautiful crisp walks – each with something new to discover. And if you don’t fancy braving the dramatic landscapes, you can always take a visit to the many National Trust heritage sites. 

Prone to bad weather, the British know a thing or two about retreating indoors, so it’s uncommon to find a country pub without a cosy fire during winter. Enjoy a roast dinner with fresh seasonal produce and locally brewed ales, or warm your feet with a hot chocolate or a cup of tea.

Home to 13 valleys, there’s something new to discover in each, and despite appearances the Lake District is very accessible either by car or making use of the public bus. And if the crisp walks, stellar views, heritage sites weren’t enough, the Christmas markets may just lure you in with its specialty gingerbread, sticky toffee puddings and homemade treats. 

London, England

London is a great city to visit year-round, but visiting during the winter is especially magical. Don’t let the cold scare you off from visiting! London’s winter weather can be chilly and rainy, but the winter months are still a great time to explore.

London gets decked out in holiday decorations during Christmastime, making it one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter. The city is covered in beautiful lights – don’t miss the displays along Oxford Street and Covent Garden! There are several Christmas markets set up around the city, with one of the biggest and best in Leicester Square. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is also a great place to get in the holiday spirit. Here, you’ll find Christmas markets, an ice rink, carnival rides, and many more festive holiday attractions. Visiting London to ring in the new year? The city holds one of the world’s best New Year’s Eve fireworks shows, and many of London’s hotels and clubs hold exciting parties.

If the cold starts to get to you, escape to one of London’s many indoor attractions. Explore one of the city’s museums (many of which are free) or see a show in the West End. English pubs are a great respite from the cold, as are the city’s numerous cafés (and there are few things better than a nice cup of hot chocolate on a cold, winter day!) and places to stay in London . No matter what you choose to do, you’ll find that winter is one of the best times to visit London!

Montreux, Switzerland

With a backdrop of the snow-capped Swiss and French Alps, and central Europe’s largest lake lapping on its doorstep, Montreux is one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter.  Perfectly located on Lake Geneva, and close to the French border, there are plenty of things to do in Montreux .

The city has attracted everyone from Tchaikovsky to Freddie Mercury and it’s a statue of the former Queen lead singer that is the first sightseeing stop for many of today’s visitors.  It takes pride of place on the beautiful lakeside promenade that runs the length of Montreux’s lake frontage and stretches for thirteen kilometres.

At one end of the lakeside promenade is the medieval Chateau de Chillon, once a castle and then a prison, the now unoccupied fortified castle is open to visitors.  A wander through the maze of courtyards, towers and halls is a must when in Montreux.

Whilst many of Montreux’s attractions are outdoors, don’t let cold or wet weather deter you.  Every Sunday, cruises operate on Lake Geneva providing the perfect opportunity to view the city from the water.  

If you don’t mind a flutter, the Montreux Casino is open every day of the year and it’s also home to the Queen: The Studio Experience exhibition where fans of the band can see memorabilia, including hand-written song lyrics, in the place where Queen recorded a number of albums.

With its proximity to the Alps, Montreux is a great base from which to enjoy a multitude of day trips.  Glacier 3000 and Rochers-de-Naye are two mountain peaks less than an hour from Montreux that offer stunning views and plenty of fun activities in winter.

Another favourite excursion from Montreux is to Gruyeres, a picturesque medieval village that is famous for its castle and chocolate and cheese production.  During the winter months (January to April) you can travel to Gruyeres aboard a special ‘cheese train’.

And let’s not forget the Montreux Christmas market.  If you’re in town in the weeks leading up to Christmas, this is the place to buy your last-minute gifts and souvenirs and mingle amongst the locals.  Be sure to look up – you might even see Santa Claus flying through the sky on his sleigh!

Murren, Switzerland

Tucked away, high up on the side of a mountain in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland is a picture-postcard car-free village called Murren. It is 5,374 feet above sea level and is at the foot of the Schilthorn peak. It’s one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter and here’s why.

Just getting to Murren is exciting! It is only accessible by a series of interesting trains, cable cars, and mountain trains. Because it faces the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains, there are winter wonderland vistas wherever you turn. Because it’s car-free it has a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. There’s no traffic or traffic fumes to contend with.

You’ll find all the usual winter sports available like skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing, and mountain climbing, but there are also a couple of very special activities that you won’t find anywhere else.

One is called ‘The Thrill Walk.’ This is an adrenalin-pumping 200-meter steel and plexiglass walkway that starts 3000 meters high and curls and winds around a near-vertical rockface on the Schilthorn mountain. There are some especially thrilling sections included There’s a see-through glass bottom section, a tight rope section, and a crawl through wire cylinder section. Well worth the walk for the magnificent views!

The other activity is found at the top of the cable car at the Schilthorn peak where, apart from a big viewing deck, you will find a revolving restaurant that was built for the James Bond film ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.’ You’ll finds an interactive museum about James Bond and plenty of interesting memorabilia to entertain you.

While you’re in Switzerland pop over to Gruyere and discover that there is  much more to Gruyere than just the cheese!

Paris, France

Is there ever a bad time to visit Paris?  The glittering lights, the ambling boulevards, the sheer beauty of the French capital, you can never go wrong with Paris.  But in winter, you ask? Yes! If you visit Paris in July or August, that is the tourist version of Paris, where all the locals have left on holiday to the South of France.  

Visiting in summer means that  museums are packed. That selfie of you and the Mona Lisa?  It will be you and 300 of your tourist friends, if you manage to get a clear shot of the portrait.  Visit in winter on the other hand, and you will be able to marvel at Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece at leisure.  Is that a hairnet that she is wearing? Paris is absolutely one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter!

And winter is when the city is simply buzzing with activity.  All the locals are back, and restaurants and patisseries are open again and brimming with customers. In winter there are also more shows, with many more ballet companies, theatrical showings, circuses and concerts.  There is so much choice, you will be hard pressed to pick.  

And if you are here for Christmas, try a vin chaud (hot wine) while you wander around the traditional stalls of a Christmas Market near the Champs Elysées.  The streets will be lit up, with garlands and decorations, a whole different level to the phrase “the City of Lights”. This is the real Paris, the one which the locals enjoy.

Paris gets into the Christmas spirit with Christmas markets throughout the city and decorations and lights everywhere. The trees and shops lining the Champs Elysees get a Christmas makeover, making it an even prettier area than usual. Check out the Christmas markets by the Eiffel Tower on the Champs de Mars while enjoying the nightly light show at the Eiffel Tower.

Zermatt, Switzerland

There are few best places to visit in Europe in winter that can compare to Switzerland, and in Switzerland there are few backdrops more iconic than the Matterhorn, a mountain which inspired the shape and packaging of the Toblerone Bar. And lying just beneath the peaks of the Matterhorn is Zermatt, an alpine mountain resort famous for its 200km of pistes as it is a hugely popular destination for skiing and winter sports enthusiasts in Switzerland.

But there is a lot more to Zermatt that winter sports as it would probably be half-and-half with traditional tourists and sightseers inspired by the winter backdrops and many who will be passing through as they join the renowned Glacier Express train journey that connects between Zermatt and St Moritz via some of the most fascinating scenery of the Swiss Alps.

The town itself is exciting to explore, with lots of shopping and après ski opportunities, as well as more traditional experiences between the chalets with lots of alpine restaurants and opportunities to feast on traditional cheese fondue and rostis . The resort also connects to the further peaks surrounding the Matterhorn by cablecars, although the views from Zermatt are still hard to beat.

The Swiss city of Zurich will almost certainly be the starting point for many people visiting the country, particularly during winter time. With many European and worldwide flight connections, Zurich airport is a truly global hub. The city itself is relatively modest in size compared to some of the other capitals of Europe, which makes it pleasant and easy enough to explore on foot, especially if you stay at the 25hours Hotel , only a few minutes from the central train station.

Set along the banks of the River Limmat, which flows into the stunning lake alongside the city, its old town straddles the water with a number of pretty bridges and sights dotted along. Around Christmas, you will enjoy snow around the city and lined across the peaks that surround it. During this time, explore the nooks and crannies around the town or even go shopping for one of the country’s famous watches. The city’s thermal baths are one not to miss during your winter visit to soak in and let the strains of daily life flow away. Then, after a chilly day around town, finish off by tucking into a delicious cheese fondue at Swiss Chuchi – its one of the best in town, so make sure you get a reservation before turning up!

In our opinion, winter is one of the best times of the year to visit Europe and especially Budapest, one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter! Not only does the city transform into the most amazing winter wonderland, there are a lot less tourists exploring the city center too. 

Budapest is home to some of the best Christmas markets on the continent – full of unique, locally made gifts, Hungarian food and drink specialities, and the most magical winter backdrops complete with sparkling Christmas lights.

Make sure to visit the biggest and longest Budapest Christmas market that takes place on Vörösmarty square in the heart of the city, complete with food stalls, craft vendors and live music. For something a little more cosier, pay a visit to St. Stephen’s Basilica Market for ice skating, a light screening show and tons of Hungarian treats. And if you want to feel like a local, head over to the charming old town of Óbuda and take a ride on the carrousel and during their Christmas market.  

While visiting the markets, give Goulash, a famous Hungarian cuisine a try. Crave your sweet tooth with a chimney cake, a hollow pastry baked over charcoal, caramelized on the outside, often rolled in cinnamon, walnut, or almond. And top it off with a mulled wine!

Romania is one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter because it really has it all! You can expect snow, majestic castles, heart-warming food and beautiful landscapes. One of  leading cities in Romania  to visit in the snow is Brasov. It’s located in the heart of Transylvania and is absolutely magical when covered in snow. Not only that but it offers winter sports nearby which any winter bunny would be excited about.

The nearby town of Rasnov is also not to be missed when visiting Romania in the wintertime. It’s only a 40-minute drive away from Brasov and has one of the best castles within Romania that is a little under the radar. From the top of the castle you also get a great look of the landscapes below and you have incredible mountains to climb nearby too!

The capital of Bucharest is also a splendid city to visit in the winter. During the Christmas period, they have some of the best Christmas markets around! There are also lots of cosy bookshops you can warm up in, including the most famous, Cărturești Carusel.

Another great thing to do in winter is to visit some thermal hot springs! Băile Herculane offers natural thermal springs to warm yourself up in as well as relax and enjoy the health properties of the water.

As there’s an abundance of things to do within Romania for winter, it makes it one of the leading destinations in Europe during the cold period. Another great thing about the country is that it is extremely affordable for travelers!

St Petersburg, Russia

What makes this grand city one of the best places to visit in Europe winter is the festive atmosphere with plenty of things to see and do in St Petersburg . The city is beautiful in the snow as locals prepare to celebrate the cold season. Think spiced glintwein, troika rides, and snow-capped domes.

Considered the cultural capital of the country, it has a long history, dating back to the early 1700s and it has gained a multitude of artistic and architectural treasures. There are also plenty of cultural events, outdoor activities, and Russian celebrations in Winter. From Ice Hockey at the Ice Palace to skiing at Tsarskoye Selo and sledging at Victory Park.

Warsaw, Poland

Warsaw is one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter. It is cold, but kind of magical.

Like many European cities, Warsaw hosts an annual Christmas market – two, actually. The main one is in Castle Square at the heart of Warsaw’s old town, while a smaller one is located just outside of the Palace of Culture and Science. As the holidays approach, Warsaw also comes to life with Christmas trees, lights, and mulled wine. Łazienki Park and Wilanów Palace are especially impressive and well worth visiting this time of year to see the elaborate Christmas decorations.

But Christmas markets aren’t the only reason to visit Warsaw in the wintertime. As it gets colder, a handful of skating rinks open around the city, and sometimes the River Wisła even freezes over, allowing people to walk across it. Pierogis, one of the delicious traditional foods of Poland, are particularly comforting during winter. And be sure to treat yourself to a scrumptious hot chocolate from Cafe E. Wedel.

Winter is also a wonderful time to visit because it is less busy. Even some of the most popular  museums in Warsaw , such as the Uprising Museum and the POLIN, can be nearly empty this time of year. It is not entirely uncommon to be the only one walking through the Old Town. Take advantage of the quiet and get serenaded by one of the city’s Chopin benches!

Wroclaw, Poland

Wrocław is the fourth largest city in southwestern Poland, located near Germany and the Czech Republic border. It is a city with a long and exciting history, full of young people and a wide range of cultural events all year long.

Wrocław is worth visiting during every season of the year, especially in winter. First of all, Wrocław is considered one of the warmest cities in Poland. The temperatures are quite pleasant, and it rarely snows here. During December and January, the city is beautifully illuminated, so it’s worth having an evening walk around the Old Town and Ostrów Tumski, which is the oldest part of the town.

Throughout December, Wrocław boasts one of Poland’s best and largest Christmas markets and the Old Town turns into a fairytale scenery. You can have a mulled wine or hot chocolate as well as try some delicious Christmas dishes or grilled ‘oscypek,’ sheep cheese from Polish mountains. You can also buy some traditional Christmas ornaments or unique handmade Christmas gifts for your loved ones. 

If you like, you can take a  one-day trip from Wroclaw  to get to know Lower Silesia region better. For fans of mountains and skiing, we recommend a trip to the Karkonosze Mountains. In winter it snows there all the time!  

Zakopane, Poland

In the most southern part of Poland, you will find one of the most beautiful towns in Europe- Zakopane. As a former host of the Winter Olympics, Zakopane has so much to offer travelers in the winter.  It’s location is perfectly situated at the base of the Tatra Mountains.  

The town is one of the most popular winter ski destinations in Poland, drawing visitors from across Europe. It is a two-hour drive from Krakow as well, allowing visitors to reach the town fairly easily.  The city is known for traditional chalets and it is evident as you drive through the town how beautiful it really is.  With deep sloping roofs, it makes it seem very fairy-tale like.  Wandering the main street of Zakopane is a must do when visiting the town.  Trying the local foods such as potato pancakes or the ever popular Oscypek cheese is necessary when meandering around the town.

Most importantly, skiing in the Tatra Mountains is one of the best parts of visiting Zakopane.  There are two especially popular winter ski destinations, Gubalowka and Kasprowy Wierch.  Kasprowy Wierch can be reached by cable car and is one of the most popular things to do in Zakopane.

Best Places to Visit in Europe in Winter: Northern Europe

Having visited Copenhagen in both December and May now, I can safely say that Copenhagen in winter is one of the absolute best times to visit-and one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter in general!

Whether you’re exploring one of the many Christmas markets or experiencing a bit of Danish hygge , there are so many amazing things to do in Copenhagen that make it the perfect winter destination.

As far as Christmas markets go, perhaps the most magical one can be found in Tivoli Gardens, the amusement park which is said to have inspired Disneyland. Or is it the Christmas market at Kronborg Castle ? If you’re looking for something more alternative, then be sure to try out the Christmas market at Christiania.

As for experiencing Danish hygge , the best way to go about it is to curl up by a fire with a delicious cup of coffee or hot chocolate. And be sure to do it with someone that you love! But if you’re looking for a little more info on hygge , then I highly recommend taking a hygge tour !

Finally, be sure to take some time to simply wander around the city or take a canal boat tour . There are so many amazing things to do in Copenhagen, and the winter makes it all the more magical. Just be sure to pack well !

Helsinki, Finland

Despite having pretty short days throughout the whole of winter, Helsinki is still a great destination for a winter getaway. The whole city becomes a snowy wonderland, with the parks, boulevards and quaint buildings doused in an icing-like layer of snow. The joy of the short Scandinavian days in winter is that you get to enjoy sunrise, sunset and the blue-black twilight all within a matter of hours – an absolute dream for photographers. Helsinki is then lit up by twinkling Christmas lights and decorations throughout the night to guide you through your nocturnal activities. It’s definitely one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter!

As you can probably imagine, Helsinki is a pretty chilly winter destination (to say the least!) so you’ll want to wrap up warm in plenty of layers in order to enjoy your trip. As long as you have a decent coat and some waterproof shoes, you’ll be ready to discover all the Helsinki has to offer.

So, what is there to do in Helsinki in winter? Well, you can go ice skating in the Helsinki Ice Park, visit the Helsinki indoor gardens, explore the city’s famous market halls and see sights such as the Uspenski Cathedral, the Central Railway Station and Senate Square.  To warm up, head inside to one of the city’s many museums, dine out at some incredible restaurants or head to the Löyly or Kotiharju saunas for an afternoon of relaxation! While the islands of Suomenlinna are a favorite summer destination for locals, they are also wonderful in winter. These picturesque islands are a peaceful place to get out in nature and contemplate the year’s end and a new beginning.

No matter what time of year it is, Iceland is a popular destination. But if you’re looking to escape at least some of the crowds–and get the chance to see the northern lights, then Iceland is easily one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter!

Start your trip out by exploring downtown Reykjavik with far fewer people. If you visit Iceland in December , you might even be lucky enough to spot the Christmas cat. Or, at the very least, some gorgeous Christmas lights!

If you’re visiting Iceland in winter, I highly suggest basing yourself in Reykjavik and taking guided day trips throughout the region so you don’t have to deal with driving in bad conditions. I’ve actually written up a whole post about seeing Iceland without a car !

Explore the Golden Circle , discover the black sand beach of Vík, and even head down to see “Iceland in Miniature” on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula ! While you’re still likely to encounter a fair number of people, it will be nothing compared to the summer crowds.

But perhaps what makes Iceland one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter are the natural phenomenons that you’ll have the chance to experience! Only having a few hours of daylight is incredibly interesting (you’ll never miss a sunrise while you’re there 😉 ), and the northern lights are absolutely amazing!

Lapland, Finland

The area above the Arctic Circle in Finland, called Lapland, is a magical place to visit on its own. But  winter in Lapland  is the season when its beauty truly shines through.

It’s when a blanket of snow as thick as you can imagine covers everything and converts the landscapes into winter dreamland. People living up there are perfectly adept to living wintery life for the bigger part of year. That’s why you can engage in a number of fascinating winter activities.

Imagine any winter fun – you can do it in Lapland! From skiing to snowboarding, from hiking in snowshoes to riding snow-covered lakes and meadows on a snowmobile. Do you like cross-country skiing? How about husky riding or enjoying a peaceful sleigh ride pulled by reindeer? Of course you can do all that in Lapland and as a bonus, you might experience the most wonderful performance nature can put on – the Northern Lights.

But that’s not all. Did you know that Rovaniemi, the largest city in Finnish Lapland, is the base of Santa Claus? That’s right, he has his office there and you can write him letters from all over the world. The elves take care of the post and running the whole operations. 😉 You can even have a photo taken with Santa, but it’ll cost you. There’s no better time to visit Santa’s village than in winter.

Lofoten Islands, Norway

Winter is one of the best times to visit the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway, especially if you can time your trip at the start or end of the season. There are lots of things to do in Lofoten during the colder months, including snow hikes, cold water surfing, many unique museums and even a Michelin-starred restaurant. 

Of course, there’s also a good chance you’ll get to see the Northern Lights in Lofoten . Being inside the Arctic Circle, the area enjoys frequent aurora displays during the winter months. If you want to maximise your chances of seeing them, try to plan your trip to Lofoten in February, March or November. At this time of year, the weather is less unpredictable than it can be in December and January, but there are still plenty of hours of darkness every day.

Many tourists head to Lofoten in June to experience the midnight sun, but not many people visit throughout the rest of the year. That means you’ll be able to enjoy many of Lofoten’s best bits all to yourself while you’re there. Visiting Lofoten and seeing it at its most desolate is part of the magic, and is just another reason why winter is a great time to visit.

Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm is magical during winter, especially in December or January when the Christmas decorations are out. There are two things you must consider when planning your trip to Stockholm in winter, the first is that it’s gonna be very cold, second is that most of the attractions have different opening times during these months. Because of that, my suggestion is to stay in the Swedish capital for at least 3 days.

One of the best things to do in Stockholm is to walk around the city, admire the architecture, the frozen rivers and how each island is different from another. Spend some extra hours strolling around the historic Gamla Stan neighborhood. Later on, jump on a boat tour and explore the city from a different perspective. When you are done with being outside, find your way to the closest metro station. Almost every metro station in Stockholm is a piece of art, explore them while going from one attraction to another. 

The Stockholm Royal Palace and the City Hall are two must-visit places, don’t forget to add them to your itinerary. Stockholm’s museums are worth mentioning too, the city has an island called Djurgårdsslätten where some of the best museums are located. For sure you won’t regret spending a day there, look for the Vasa Museum, Nordic Museum, ABBA Museum (a must for music lovers) and Spritmuseum (for spirits and vodka lovers).

Stockholm is the address of good food, the city has many international restaurants and plenty of street food a bite on the go. If you want to try local delicacies visit the Ostermalm Saluhall Market with an empty stomach, I’m sure you will love it. 

Best Places to Visit in Europe in Winter: Southern Europe

The Algarve coast in southern Portugal is one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe with its raw rugged cliffs towering over the Atlantic Ocean. This makes the area perfect for hiking in winter when the weather isn’t too burning hot. There are numerous trails to choose from and different levels. Some of the most beautiful are  Seven Hanging Valleys Trail  from Carvoeiro and the trail from Lagos to Ponta da Piedade . These are nice day walks and can be combined with enjoying the warm winter sun on one of the many world-famous beaches, like Marinha beach and Camilo beach. The whole coastline is great for surfing and other water sports like scuba diving.

The coastline is also known for its many incredible caves, where the most famous is the mesmerizing Benagil beach cave. This is a natural wonder you can only reach by boat, kayak, or standup paddleboard. With a boat trip, you can explore many caves on a tour, while by kayak or standup paddleboard you have the freedom to get off inside the beach caves and explore them up close. It is not allowed to let people off the boats in the caves.There are plenty of cute villages and cities along the Algarve coast. Among others, Lagos, Albufeira, and Tavira are worth mentioning. Other points of interest are Sagres, Ponta da Piedade, and Algar Seco.

You may or may not be surprised, but one of the smallest countries in Europe is actually Andorra. Wedged between Spain and France, this extraordinary country lies at an average 2,000 meters above sea level that makes it one of the best destinations for skiing and snowboarding, and one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter! The Principality of Andorra is home to less than 80,000 people, while over 9 million tourists visit each year to ski and shop. It results in a weird but charming mix of French, Spanish, and Catalan cultures. Plus, a wide array of winter activities and plentiful shopping opportunities.

Andorra is a unique place to visit, which is only a 2.5-hour drive northwest from Barcelona. Andorra used to mainly attract holidaymakers looking for an active adventure. But over the past few decades, the country made a large investment in skiing infrastructure making the entire area a great alternative to the Alps and a very popular skiing area near Barcelona. 

Now the elevated offerings of the ski resorts and their mountain villages attract affluent travelers seeking luxury, as well as families. Even with these improvements, the value of what you get for your money in Andorra is still unmatched. You can have a luxurious vacation at a much cheaper price tag than you could in France or Switzerland.

Grandvalira and Vallnord are the two main ski areas in Andorra. Grandvalira is the biggest ski area in the Pyrenees and a good choice for great skiing near Barcelona with 67 ski lifts servicing 18 green slopes, 38 blue slopes, 32 red and 22 black slopes bring the total to 110 slopes on a skiable area of 20 square kilometers. 

The thing that differentiates Grandvalira and many ski resorts in the rest of Europe are short lift queues. Even at the weekend you can often ski for hours in Andorra without having to queue for more than a few minutes. 

Vallnord has amazing slopes with a gentler gradient that are perfect for families and first-timers. I didn’t have a chance to enjoy skiing and snowboarding at Vallnord but my friends told me that the Arcalís–Ordino sector has the best off-piste skiing in Andorra.

Barcelona, Spain

When thinking about places to spend the winter in Europe in, you might think rather of snowy places in Northern and Central Europe than the sunny city of Barcelona. Anyway, Barcelona is an amazing place to visit during the winter as the sun is shining almost every day and you can still sit outside warmed by the sun while enjoying your  café von leche  or an ice-cold sangria just as you would in any other season.

Even though the water of the mediterranean sea is likely to be too cold to swim in during the winter months, you can still take a beautiful walk along the city’s coast. In winter, there are fewer tourists, which makes your walk much more peaceful and quiet. But also at the other attractions that are part of your  Barcelona travel itinerary , you will meet way fewer tourists as during high-season (unless you are traveling between Christmas and New Year). Also for your accommodation, you will most likely spend fewer as you would during the summer months which is great if you are traveling on a budget.

One thing you should definitely have a bite of if you visit Barcelona in the winter, are churros. You are totally going to love this sweet pastry. Mostly they are served with a cup of hot chocolate to dip your freshly-baked churros in before enjoying them.

Cagliari, Italy

When looking for the best places to visit in Europe in winter for sun, be sure to check out the island of Sardinia in Italy. Head over to Cagliari, a city once known for being Italy’s capital of culture to explore a lively ancient city with a hearty mix of locals and tourists.

In Cagliari, you’ll learn how everything from Gladiatorial contests to public executions would go down at the Roman Amphitheatre. See the Roman Ruins for yourself in closer detail with just a short walk from the center. As you walk up and along the hilly streets, you are presented with countless multi-colored buildings that help light up the city. Some streets lead to castles and others to attractive venues where you can eat authentic pizza. Picture perfect on a sunny winter afternoon.

Reach one of the many hilltops for lunch, or a turn another corner and find a row of tables waiting to serve you with the finest Sardinian cuisine. Every day you spend is another opportunity to grab yourself a gelato and continue exploring the diverse architecture.

There are some great sights down in the Marina area where you can find more shops and restaurants. Not to mention, access to both the bus and train service which will allow you to transport yourself further around the island. The historic center of Cagliari extends more than meets the eye, so a couple of days here is recommended.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

A textbook European winter destination is Cortina d’Ampezzo. The little town in the Italian Dolomites welcomes skiers and snowboarders with 120 km of very well groomed pistes and 37 cable cars and lifts. It’s also a great destination for those who are not into winter sports, though. Cortina is a posh city, with many 5-star  resorts, spas, and designer shops. And it’s an even better place for those looking for breathtaking views. The town itself if quite a sight, all covered in white, surrounded by beautiful massifs. But the vistas from the mountains are simply stunning.

A short cable car ride up to Tofana, Faloria or Pocol will give you incredible aerial views of the city, and a jaw-dropping panorama of the mountains and the valleys around them. You can easily reach any of the ski resorts with a convenient season bus that goes around them while they’re opened. On top you’ll find a mountain hut that will provide mulled wine (of course coffee and food too) and shelter to  enjoy the vistas while being comfortable and warm.

The town is 160 km north of Venice, and only the beautiful winding  mountain road makes the trip worth it. Have your camera ready from the  get-go!

If you’re looking for the best places to visit in Europe in winter, then you absolutely cannot go wrong with heading to Cyprus. Situated in the southeastern Mediterranean, this island nation is one of the warmest in Europe and experiences over 300 days of sunshine per year. Even in the coldest months of the year, temperatures in Cyprus will rarely dip below 16°C and you can easily expect warmer weather than that.

Along with the perennially warm and sunny weather, there are countless things to do in Cyprus that are sure to occupy any type of traveller. While the winter months may be slightly too cold to lounge on the beach or swim in the Mediterranean, there are so many things to see and do throughout the country that aren’t related to the sea that visitors have to try hard to be bored.

If you’re a history buff, then Cyprus is an excellent place to visit — especially if you’re interested in ancient Greek ruins. No matter if you decide to base yourself in the underrated capital of Nicosia or in one of the more popular coastal  cities like Paphos, Larnaca or Limassol , you will only be a stone’s throw away from some incredible ruins and fascinating history. If you’re more interested in local culture and gastronomy, then heading to some of the mountain villages in the Troodos mountains to go wine tasting or exploring is also a fantastic winter option. Of course, hiking is also a great option in the winter months as you won’t have to combat the oppressive heat that comes with the summer. If you want to experience some of Cyprus’ best hiking trails, head to the Akamas Peninsula or the Paphos Forest.

All in all, if you’re looking to escape the winter cold in continental Europe, then you cannot go wrong with a trip to Cyprus!

Winter is a fabulous time to visit Florence, Italy. You’ll find tons of  things to do in Florence  any time you visit: after all, as the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence is a treasure house of art and architecture. But if you visit in the winter, you’ll see it all with two big bonuses: fewer crowds and smaller lines at the major sights, and lower prices on accommodations.

Climb to the top of the Duomo di Firenze for magnificent views over the rooftops of the city. Or climb Giotto’s Campanile next door for equally fabulous views. Walk the city’s famous piazzas. Cross the historic Ponte Vecchio. Duck into a cafe it it gets cold, to sip on hot coffee or hot chocolate.

View some of the most famous art in the world at the renowned Uffizi Gallery, or stare in awe at Michelangelo’s  David  in the Accademia Gallery. Other than these two famous museums, Florence is home to many others that are worth visiting. For example, the Bargello Museum holds many beautiful sculptures and is rarely super crowded.

At sunset, a visit to Piazzale Michelangelo is a must! You’ll see the city spread out below you, glowing in the mellow light of the late day sun. As the lights come on, you’ll be moved by one of the most beautiful views on the planet.

If you visit around the holidays, you’ll find Florence decked up for Christmas, in green, red, and gold. Walk the historic center to see nativity scenes and decorated Christmas trees. Enjoy the Christmas markets and browse for souvenirs.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, one of the cheapest cities to visit in Western Europe, is also one of the coolest cities in Europe and perfect for a winter getaway. The hilly city will charm you with terrific architecture and panoramic views at every corner, great food, friendly people, and rich history.

Start your visit at Praca de Comercio, an oceanfront square that’s considered the heart of the city. Pass under Arco da Rua Augusta and stroll northbound towards the trendy Rossio neighbourhood. This main commercial street has charming shops, restaurants and cafes, and includes gems like the Elevador de Santa Justa, a historical vertical elevator with a panoramic view from the top.

Next, head to Castelo de Sao Jorge, a well-preserved castle in the city. Spend a couple of hours exploring the grounds and enjoying the panoramic views over Lisbon. On your way downhill from the castle, take tram 28 for an authentic Lisbon experience on the famous vintage tram.

Beside its main attractions, Lisbon has seven viewpoints , or ‘Miradouros’, where you can see the city and its charming rooftops from every angle. Most viewpoints have a small bar at the top where you can stop for a drink while taking in the view – the bars even have blankets for those cold days. All seven viewpoints are unique and worth checking out, but if you’re short on time, head to Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Miradouro da Graca.

Lisbon can be seen during any of the winter months, though if you prefer the warmest weather, I suggest you go during November. On average, the temperature during the day is between 12 and 18°C, which is perfect for roaming around the city and sightseeing. However, after sundown, temperatures can drastically decrease, so come prepared with extra layers.

After two visits, one in autumn and one in winter, today I am here to tell you how great this Mediterranean destination is during the off-season.  Malta in winter  rocks!

But why do I say this?

Well, first of all, you have to know that despite there is a common tendency to think that summer temperatures are enjoyed in all the coastal countries of the Mediterranean, this is a false belief. The temperatures are mild, yes, but they cannot be considered summery in many places. And Malta is one of them. On the other hand, it also rains quite a lot during the winter season so if this destination is on your plans, get ready for it!

But the case is that, if wearing a jacket and a raincoat does not scare you, you can enjoy these islands (especially the two largest ones, Malta and Gozo) almost without tourists, with ridiculous prices and the locals much friendlier than usual as they don’t have to deal with the infamous over-tourism issues.

Stop giving it so much thought and decide to spend a winter holiday in Malta. A quiet, cheap and beautiful destination with a lot of history to discover!

Ponte di Legno, Italy

Ponte di Legno is a quirky small town in Val Camonica, located somewhere in the middle of the spectacular Italian Alps in Brescia Province. 

Although it’s considered a vacation destination all year round, I used to enjoy its winter the most, at a time when I loved snowboarding more than anything else. 

To be precise Ponte di Legno is the closest and most popular town located in a more extended ski area that includes Ponte di Legno, ​Tonale, ​Presena Glacier, and ​Temù. Altogether the area offers something like 100 km of slopes available and 28 lifts transport, at an elevation between 1,121 and 3,000 m.

Differently from when I use to hang out there, now all the slopes and ski lift are connected for the full enjoyment of the tourists who can spend less time on the lifts and more flying over the soft white slopes. 

There are many kinds of terrains and dificulties to suit every kind of skiers and snowboarder, including the little ones who have plenty of space where they can learn and practice.

In Pontedilegno-Tonale, as well as skiing, you can also go cross-country skiing, on winter hikes, snowshoe hikes or do spectacular night tours on snowmobiles.

Those who don’t ski can enjoy nice walks in the beautiful town where they are also building a futuristic spa complex that will be ready for winter 2021. We all can’t wait to try it as well.  

Porto, Portugal

Porto’s temperate Mediterranean climate makes it perfect for a winter visit! While it’s not as warm as the beaches in the Algarve further south, it’s still a welcome reprieve from cooler climes further north in Europe. Expect temperatures in winter that range between 43 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit (6 to 24 degrees Celsius).

There are so many  things to do in Porto ! And sunny winter days are the perfect time to do them. Unlike larger Lisbon, Porto is smaller, somewhat flat, and far more walkable. One of the very best ways, in fact, to discover this beautiful traditional fishing village is to  take yourself on a walking tour of the gorgeous tile building facades here.

Start in Old Town on your first day, visiting the Chapel of Souls, famous Clérigos Bell Tower, and twin churches (Carmo and Carmelitas). If you’re willing to brave the crowds, stop by the gorgeous Lello Bookstore of Harry Potter fame. Ride an antique trolley car, take in a Fado performance, and gasp at the tilework in the historic Sao Bento Train station. Go port tasting at the port houses on the River Douro! 

With more time, plan a day or more port tasting in the nearby Douro Valley. The green terraced hillsides give way to a deep valley along the River Douro. It’s a unique and scenic experience that even non-drinkers will enjoy. You can tour the vineyards on your own or choose a day tour from Porto.

Portuguese food is the perfect comfort food for winter, too. Think bachalau a brás , a beautiful dish of salt cod, diced potatoes, and scrambled eggs, seasoned with garlic, parsley, and olives. Porto is delightful any time of year, and particularly in winter with fewer crowds!

Rome, Italy

Rome is a wonderful destination in most seasons but there is something special about Rome in winter. 

At this time, you need to wrap up to go sightseeing and you may even get the occasional rainy day; however, the city has some special treats for those who brave its coldest season: great festive cheer (December), crowd-free sightseeing opportunities (January – March) and some of the most delicious food you can think of!

There is plenty to do in Rome in winter. If this is your first time in the city, you can make the most of the shorter queues to visit  Rome’s most famous sites . I always recommend to include the Colosseum and the Pantheon in any Rome itinerary, as well as adding long walks in Rome’s famous piazzas.

Piazza Navona, Trevi and Piazza di Spagna are just the most famous but Rome has hidden gems around every corner and there is no better way to explore them than allowing yourself long walks in the city center.

Winter is also a great time to tuck into Rome’s traditional food. The city is famous for warming, filling dishes and there is no better way to taste them than joining the locals in one of the cozy’s wine bars in the city: usually decorated with dark wood shelves and endless bottles, they offer genuine fare and are the perfect place to escape a chilly night!

Last but no least, Rome in winter has great shopping opportunities. January is sales season in Rome and February starts bringing in the first signs of spring, both in the forms of blossoms and new seasons collections. The best place to go is the area of Via del Corso, in the center, where both sightseeing and shopping opportunities abound.

Sicily in the peak summer months is a frantic and busy place where dozens of cruise ships dock every week. While winter can be colder, it rarely gets to freezing points with the average temperature hanging around 9 degrees and highs in the teens (at ground level). It’s therefore the perfect place to relax and take in the gorgeous scenery in a less crowded environment–and it’s definitely one of the best places to visit in Europe in winter!

The quaint town of Taormina is particularly wonderful at this time of year as it is nestled in a cove and surrounded by mountains, so the weather and temperatures are even better than elsewhere. Along with nearby Syracuse you can explore some spectacular ancient sights like the Greek and Roman ruins.

There are wineries to explore in the three main regions of Etna, Marsala and Trapani that serve up some unique volcanic soil based cultivars. If you have your sea legs and the sun is out, you can sail to the UNESCO-inscribed Aeolian Archipelago and its seven islands. Probably the most popular activity in winter in Sicily is to visit the Godfather movie locations in Savoca and Forza d’Agro (not Corleone). But of course, you can’t visit Sicily without stuffing your face with cannoli, granita and other delicious Sicilian dishes.

Culture vultures will love exploring the churches in the capital of Palermo. Brave, intrepid and sporty travelers can trek up snowy Mount Etna, where they will get the chance to ski on an active volcano. The mountain is even cold in summer, so you will need to dress appropriately.

January is a fabulous time to travel! Whether you’re looking to escape the winter cold and hit the beach, you’re up for adventure in a new city, or you’re wishing for a winter wonderland to enjoy, here’s some amazing destinations.

1. Costa Rica (one of the best places to visit in January for sun)

If you’re looking for the best countries to visit in January, then Costa Rica absolutely needs to be on your radar! Zipline through cloud forests, watch monkeys and toucans dance around in the trees, dip your toes into luxurious sandy beaches and enjoy great food, Costa Rica has so much to offer visitors.

December through April is dry season, as it’s when you’ll see the best weather in Costa Rica. Although the temperatures vary based on which region you travel to, it’s still a great getaway than being stuck in the cold back home.

Visit the famous Arenal Volcano and enjoy the hot springs in La Fortuna. Still in the mountainous region, there are plenty of things to do in Monteverde , including ziplining and walking the suspension bridges through the cloud forests.

For a perfect beach getaway, head west to Tamarindo, where you can hit the water surfing, kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. With hotels and restaurants sprinkled throughout the beach, it’s a great spot to spend a few days.

If you’re looking for more adventure, head to Manuel Antonio National Park, where you can witness monkeys and sloths hanging about!

Be sure to spend some time at the best beaches in Manuel Antonio , including my favorite, Playa Espadilla Sur. There’s so many things to do in Manuel Antonio , you could spend an entire vacation just in this area.

Costa Rica is definitely one of the best places to visit in January for sun, and a destination you’ll love!

Austria is a landlocked country between Germany and Italy, located in Central Europe. The alps extend from the west to the east and create a perfect winter wonderland every year.

People come from all over the world to enjoy the warm and fun ski resort experience in the Austrian mountains. There is something for everyone, from skiing, ski touring, snowboarding, ice skating, snow walking, sledging to country cross skiing.

A mulled wine or a Jagertee warm up every cold heart! Villages and cities are decorated with wonderful lights, creating a magical dreamy environment, the perfect place for a vacation in January. This is the best time to relax body and soul in some of the most remarkable thermal baths and sauna villages in Central Europe.

Old traditions make Austria a unique place to be in January. They can still be experienced at the beginning of January, the Perchten run in the Tyrol region and the Glöckler run in Styria. The South American country of Colombia is a great destination in January – in fact, it’s one of the best weather times to visit of the entire year! In January, the sun is shining, the weather is warm (though there is a huge variety of average temperatures throughout the country), and the rain is low. 

In general, Colombia is a great place to visit, no matter the time of year. It’s a very inexpensive country to travel to, and there’s a wide variety of things to see and do. The capital city of Bogota has an old town filled with colonial architecture, cobblestoned streets, and a wide variety of historical buildings and world class museums. 

Or, you can visit the Coffee Region of Colombia, such as the little, colorful town of Salento. Here, you can visit the coffee farms of Colombia or go hiking in the Cocora Valley, a magical hike into the mountains, where you can see the famous wax palms of Colombia – the tallest palms in the world that grow up to 200 feet high!

Finally, a must visit spot in Colombia is the coastal city of Cartagena, a photogenic, absolutely gorgeous colonial walled city with colorful buildings covered in plants and flowers. 

As you travel throughout Colombia, you’ll likely take a quick plane ride between the different cities. Many people choose to start their Colombia adventure by flying into the El Dorado International Airport in Bogota, and staying in Bogota at the Magdalena Guest House is a perfectly located spot to start your exploration of this gorgeous and varied country in South America.

4. Aruba (a favorite on this list of best countries to visit in January)

If you’re looking for a beachy escape from the clutches of old man winter, look no further than gorgeous Aruba! January is a fantastic time to visit not only to enjoy sunny skies and 80-degree weather, but it’s also a unique place to ring in the New Year .

Typically, New Year’s Eve is kicked off with loads of fireworks throughout the city (if you were planning to sleep – good luck 😉), from large displays over the water to traditional Pagara (long strings of Chinese firecrackers) throughout the streets; there’s no end to colorful and fiery displays.

After that, the party doesn’t stop! Throughout January and into February, there are countless parades like the nighttime Torch Light Parade and other festivities in honor of Carnival . The official start of Carnival is in November, but most of the festivities happen in January and February.

Because of these fun festivities, you should expect to pay a little more for accommodations. To get the best deal, book early!

Aside from a colorful party scene, Aruba is also known for mesmerizing white sand beaches like Palm and Eagle Beach. These are 2 great spots to kick back and relax with a fruity cocktail. They’re some of the best beaches in Aruba !

If you’re looking for an epic winter adventure, consider visiting Iceland in January. 

While the days may be short here, you’ll get to enjoy Iceland’s spectacular scenery to yourself, given that the summer crowds have long departed. Better yet, you’ll likely get to see Iceland covered with glistening snow. This is a fantastic time to explore the country’s ice caves or go on a glacier hike!

People travel from all over the world to Iceland in January, given that it’s one of the absolute best months to see the spectacular Northern Lights, thanks to the long, dark nights.

You can either book a guided tour to try to find the lights or drive outside of major cities, away from light pollution, to spot them yourself. Patience is key- seeing the lights depends on whether there’s solar activity, as well as whether there’s clouds obscuring the night sky. 

Another excellent winter activity here is taking advantage of any of the geothermal hot springs you’ll find scattered throughout the country. The springs may be more natural, like the Hellulaug Hot Pool, which is just an organically-formed pool overlooking the ocean, or can be straight up swanky, like the recently opened Sky Lagoon, with an infinity pool and sauna with stunning views of Kársnes Harbour.

The easiest way to reach this tiny island country is to fly into Reykjavik’s Keflavik International Airport.  Iceland’s weather in January is cold, but not as chilly as its Northern location might suggest, thanks to the relatively warm water from the gulf stream- you can expect temperatures to generally range from 26 to 37 degrees Fahrenheit. 

So be sure to include lots of warm layers on your Iceland packing list , like a base layer, parka, and gloves so you can actually enjoy exploring Iceland’s incredible landscape.

6. Thailand

Thailand is an incredible place, and one of the best countries to visit in January. With a large variety of destinations to see within Thailand, you’ll need to decide what kind of experience you want to have, and plan your vacation accordingly.

If you’re looking for beautiful temples, rich in historic architecture loaded with history, then Bangkok or Chiang Mai might be the right spot for you. Stay in the city a few days to soak in the sights. Be sure to take a food tour, and if your’e in Bangkok, visit the floating markets.

If a beach getaway is what you’re after, you have a variety of choices as well. The Phi Phi Islands offer some of the most pristine beaches in all of Thailand. Or, you can opt for Krabi, where there’s a mix of beaches and historical sights to explore.

Phuket is one of the most popular destinations in Thailand, and for good reason. With beautiful white sand beaches and plenty of amenities and accommodations, there’s something for everyone.

Take a snorkeling tour or day trip to Coral Island Phuket to see the area. And with an international airport, it’s easier to get to Phuket than some of the other islands in Thailand.

January is a fabulous time to visit Thailand because it’s the dry season. With plenty of sunshine, culture, food and activities, you’re sure to have a great time in Thailand!

7. France (one of the best places to visit in January Europe)

The month of January is a  great time to visit France because it is less crowded. Since it’s part of the low season, hotel and flight prices are more affordable.

Outside of the capital, Strasbourg in the north is a fantastic alternative. The Cathedral, art galleries, and taverns serving hearty plates of sauerkraut and local wines await visitors to this peaceful and unhurried city.

However, the French Riviera may be the best choice for people who prefer a warmer vacation in January. Also known as La Côte d’Azur (Azure Coast), it is accessible via the Aéroport Nice Côte d’Azur which is the second busiest international airport in France next to Paris. The French Riviera is a good option for those who prefer milder temperatures. 

Visiting the French Riviera in January will show you a more laid-back side of France, free of curious tourists and offering more affordable rates. Fewer visitors mean you get a good deal in even the more expensive hotel rooms, as well as cheaper meals in the area’s top restaurants.

A highly recommended place to stay in the  Royal Antibes , a stylish modern hotel with a prime location on the beach. The price of a room with huge glass windows and great views starts at slightly over €100.

You can spend your days touring the Côte d’Azur in between taking in the breathtaking vistas of the sea and basking in the mild Mediterranean weather . Enjoy the crisp winter days hiking the French Riviera’s beautiful trails, including the spectacular route over Èze-village or the Baou above St. Jeannet, with superb views over the Var Valley.

You might also find mimosas in the village of Tanneron, which is also home to Europe’s largest mimosa forest, the Massif de Tanneron.

The town of Menton, meanwhile, is known for its beautiful gardens and well-preserved old town center. The ancient walled city of Antibes is also well worth exploring. And if you want to experience a winter vacation like celebrities, you can also explore Cannes.

Situated in the middle of the Leeward Islands, part of the Lesser Antilles, in the American West Indies,  Antigua is arguably one of the prettiest Caribbean islands.  

Although it is a favorite destination for honeymoons and romantic escapes, it makes a perfect vacation for any kind of traveler that is not on a budget. 

It is in fact quite an expensive destination, especially if you choose to stay at one of the beautiful Antigua all inclusive resorts on the pristine Caribbean coast, which is very much recommended if you want to enjoy the island at its best. 

Antigua and Barbuda is actually made of the 2 namesake islands and many small islets, some of which are great snorkeling spots that you can visit by joining one of the boat tours available. 

Antigua is one of the best countries to visit in January because it’s dry season with less risk of rain. So expect a lot of sunshine and blue sky. But also it’s the most expensive time of the year to travel to Antigua, for the same reason, which is something to keep in mind as well.

Antigua is renowned for its incredible beaches (they say there are 365, one for each day of the year) and spectacular landscapes. Its home to gorgeous scenery with lush hills tumbling over the white sand beaches and the turquoise Caribbean sea.

Among the things you shouldn’t miss in Antigua, besides getting pampered in your gorgeous luxury hotel, are:

• Rent a car to explore all the spectacular beaches, including Darkwood beach, Dickenson bay and Half Moon Bay
• Dance at the sound of calypso music at Shirley Heights on a Sunday while watching the sun going down
• Try the local cuisine in one of the delicious restaurants on the beach
• Take a walk around the historical site of Nelson Dockyard at English Harbour and join one of the boat tours around the island. 

If you’re traveling on a budget you can also find more modest accommodations but keep in mind that the overall cost of living in the island is high.

If you’re looking for a sunny getaway this January, take a trip adventuring around Mexico. As a massive country, enjoy everything from the vibrant Mexico City to the stunning cenotes of the Riviera Maya to colonial cultural towns and ancient ruins.

With its close proximity to the equator, Mexico enjoys year-round warm weather, making it the perfect place to escape the cold. One of the best months to visit the country, January is in the midst of Mexico’s dry season when temperatures are excellent and rain levels are low.

Average daytime temperature hovers between 75°F-85°F, but differs from region to region. At this time, colder winds and temperatures hit northern Mexico compared to the higher humidity in the south.

Everyone celebrates Christmas in Mexico, and even though January is a bit late for the festivities, enjoy strolling around every town decorated to the brim with holiday decor. January also signals the start of amazing festivals like Merida Fest, Fiesta Grande de Chiapa de Corzo, and Carnaval Jiutepec in Cuernavaca.

If you’re thinking of starting the New Year with a bang, what better way to do this than laying on a dreamy beach, with white powdered sand and sone of the clearest water in the world? A trip to the Maldives should be on everyone’s bucket list , and January is the perfect time to do it. 

Although it’s right in the middle of the season, January is perfect for a trip to the Maldives as it’s right after the holidays and just before Valentine’s Day, so the prices are really great during these times. You can even find some  affordable water villas  if you dig enough, and you can maybe score a nice room at  this resort that I’m sure you’ve seen on Instagram already.

Getting there is easy, as there’s one main airport used as a hub, located next to the Capital city of Male. From here, you reach your resort island by either speed boat, seaplane, or a combination of the two, but this is handled by the accommodation itself so you really don’t have to worry about anything while on your trip.

And if you usually have a long list of activities to do while on vacation, you’ll have to adjust when in the Maldives: here, you can only lay on a beach or float in the water.

Of course, you can do various water activities like snorkeling, diving, or going on sunset cruises, or you can lay on a sunbed, hammock, or on a massage table, but you get the point. There’s really no better place in the world to relax than this tropical paradise!

Singapore is one of the best countries to visit in January for those looking for a warm and sunny getaway. The weather is hot and humid year round but January is one of the cooler months making it a great time to visit.

The temperature will still be hot so it is best to see indoor attractions during midday and early afternoon. The evening is a great time to walk around and explore as Singapore is considered one of the safest countries in the world.

One of the top and most unique  Singapore attractions  is Gardens by the Bay, a large nature park with both outdoor and indoor gardens and conservatories. Don’t miss Supertree Grove, made up of huge tree-shaped vertical gardens, that puts on free light and music shows every night.

27. Grenada (another awesome contender for best place to vacation in January)

The island of Grenada in the Caribbean is one of the best islands to visit in January. Located at the southern end of the chain of Caribbean islands, Grenada is still rooted deeply in culture and nature to experience, without a whole lot of big chain influences.

January is an amazing time to visit, as the temperature is roughly 86 degrees year round during the day, and the water stays nice and warm too! It’s the perfect getaway from the winter cold to enjoy warm water, beautiful beaches, waterfalls, a tropical climate and Caribbean culture.

The easiest way to get to Grenada is by flying into Maurice Bishop International Airport. Once you arrive, you can either grab a taxi (they look like small buses) or make your way to a shuttle if your accommodation offers transportation.

There’s a huge range of accommodation options, including many homestay options, more casual resorts, all the way to luxury all inclusives. My recommendation for an eco-friendly boutique hotel is the True Blue Bay Resort , while if you’re looking for something all inclusive, Spice Island Beach Resort .

January does fall within Grenada’s high season, so be prepared for more crowds than if you went during the rainy season (summer months).

Definitely visit one of Grenada’s Best Beaches while there, and try to take an island wide guided tour to experience waterfalls, sulphur springs, cocoa farms, local distilleries or more! Plus, the world-famous underwater attraction, snorkeling the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park is a must-do while visiting the island.

You’ll want to stay in Grenada at least a week to experience all there is to see and do! Grenada is one of the best countries to visit in January. It’s an amazing destination with the welcoming and vibrant Caribbean culture that you don’t want to miss!

England  is an underrated country to visit in January. It’s the perfect mix of winter wonderland and mild temperatures, depending on where you visit.

For example, Oxford and Birmingham typically see dustings of snow throughout January. You may even find enough snow a few days a year to build a small snowman!

But places like Brighton Beach will remain snow-less. There are even days London will be as sunny as in summer!

The mild temperatures attract visitors who are looking to escape the freezing cold of Canada or Scandinavia, but don’t want to pay the inflated prices of a beach vacation. Temperatures average 5C (41F).

Don’t forget to pack a light coat and some waterproof boots , as it can drizzle throughout January.

Luckily, the best things to do in the UK aren’t summer-based.

Having high tea in Covent Garden, touring Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford upon Avon, listening to live music at a pub, and enjoying British stand-up at local comedy houses are all great indoor activities to take advantage of.

There are plenty of ways to save money while still enjoying everything the country has to offer. For starters, take advantage of the many free museums and galleries.

You can also find cheap eats by avoiding tourist traps and sticking to local pubs. And finally, take advantage of the many cheap or free walking tours available in most cities.

The UK is easily accessible from anywhere in the world.

Major airports include London Heathrow (LHR) and London Gatwick (LGW). Stanstead is another option, but then you’ll need to take a long train journey. 

To get around, take trains for cheap day trips from London to places like Bath and Oxford.

While India may be on your travel bucket list , January is also a great time to cross it off!

January in India means it’s dry season, so you don’t need to worry about rain like you do during monsoon season. While India is a large country, narrowing down what you want to see and do will help determine what weather you’ll face and where to fly into .

The northern part of India is home to the famous Taj Mahal. Located in Agra, the Taj Mahal can be visited via day trip from Delhi. One of the new 7 wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal’s grand and impressive architecture is stunning in real life!

In southern India, the popular towns of Bengaluru (aka Bangalore) is a busy city with so many things to do. Bangalore is famous for the Lalbagh Botanical Garden, the Bengaluru Palace, Bull Temple and Cuban Park. Nearby Mysuru (aka Mysore) is a great day trip or weekend getaway from Bangalore. Be sure to watch the lighting of the Mysore Palace – stunning!

If you’re looking for a beach destination in India, Goa is the place to be. With gentle waves, swaying palm trees and beautiful, relaxing hotels, Goa is a great spot to relax and unwind in India. It’s truly a great destination, and one of the best countries to visit in January.

31. The Gambia

Average temp:  high 91, low 65 Fly into:  Banjul International Airport, Banjul

Perched on the west coast of Africa is a small but charming country known as The Gambia. The Gambia is renowned for its lengthy swathes of golden sand beaches, freshly caught fish and smiling locals.

The Gambia has 2 distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The dry season runs from November to May and is the best time to visit. The temperature at this time of year is pleasant – roughly 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) – and you can expect bright sunshine on most days.

January is also a great time of year to visit due to the country’s annual Banjul Demba Cultural Festival. Here, you’ll witness traditional music and dance performances in the country’s capital city.

The Gambia is a very small country and so only houses one international airport: Banjul International Airport.

Most visitors to The Gambia choose to base themselves in Serrekunda, a vibrant town set behind a glorious stretch of beach, fringed by lazy palm trees.

Serrekunda is a mere 30 minute drive from the airport. It’s easy to grab a taxi from the airport, or you can pre-arrange a taxi with your hotel or via a taxi company beforehand.

Alternatively, you can hire a car in The Gambia . I’d personally recommend pre-booking a taxi from a reputable company as some taxis at the airport are in questionable condition.

There are numerous hotels in Serrekunda for you to choose from but a personal favourite of mine is Luigi’s Complex. It has a very friendly and laid-back vibe and is only a short walk from the beach.

32. New Zealand (by far one of the best countries to visit in January)

A bucket-list destination for many, New Zealand is at the top of its game in January. This summer month brings some of the warmest temperatures in the country, delighting visitors that enjoy sunny days at the beach.

New Zealand is a surprisingly large country – a fact that many people underestimate when planning a vacation. The amount of time you have will affect the places you are able to visit, however, these are some amazing summer spots in Aotearoa.

If you’re able to include them in your itinerary, you’ll be sure to come away happy. After all, New Zealand is one of the best countries to visit in January!

Paihia is located in the Bay of Islands, and though it is beautiful at any time of year, it’s particularly vibrant during the summer season. Known for its stunning beaches, uninhabited islands, settled weather and marine life, this is a must-see in January. Kerikeri is the closest airport to Paihia, but many choose to fly into Auckland and drive up.

Moving down the North Island, the Coromandel Peninsula is another summer-time favourite for locals and visitors alike . Significant highlights include Hot Water Beach (where you can dig your own natural hot pool in the sand), Cathedral Cove and New Chums Beach, all of which are best enjoyed in the warmth of the summer season. Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga airports all service this region.

Finally, a summertime trip to Fiordland should be on your radar. Though this area experiences a lot of rain right throughout the year, this will be your best chance at seeing it on a nice day.

When the weather is still, the mirror reflection of  Milford Sound on the water really is incomparable. Queenstown is the closest airport to Milford Sound, though many choose to stay in Te Anau.

One of the best places to visit in January for sun is the European island of Malta . Actually, Malta is made up of 3 islands, Malta, Gozo, and Comino.

Compared to other European countries,  Malta in winter  is usually very sunny and in January temperatures can go up to 20 degrees Celsius which on a sunny day feels very pleasant.

One of the best things about going in January is that fewer tourists venture to the island which is mainly considered a summer destination. But what most people fail to realize is that it is the best time for going hiking and exploring the ancient towns.

Malta has a long history, and if you get rainy or windy days it’s perfect to explore underground where you can walk through the World War Two Shelters or discover the old catacombs in Rabat. On the other hand, if the weather is nice, you can easily go for a quick dip in the crystal-clear water.

There are numerous flights connecting Malta with the rest of Europe. In addition, you can take the boat directly from Sicily in Italy.

Getting around Malta by bus is easy, it costs 1.50 Euros for a ticket that lasts you for 2 hours (including bus changes.) On top of that, they have tap and pay so there is no need for cash.

Last but certainly not least is the dreamy island chain of Turks and Caicos. Definitely worthy of a spot on this list of the best countries to visit in January, Turks and Caicos has unbelievable white sand beaches with the most turquoise water you’ll ever see.

A beach destination with the right mix of good food and water activities, Turks and Caicos is a laid-back island chain where the term ‘island time’ could have been created.

The whimsical nature of the island is perfect for a January getaway when all that matters is what time you should re-apply your sunblock . (By the way, be sure to use ocean-safe sunblock at all times to protect marine life.)

Staying on the main island of Providenciales doesn’t have to break the bank, either. It’s possible to do Turks and Caicos on a budget , without sacrificing a good time on the island chain.

While there, be sure to visit the best beaches on Turks and Caicos . Grace Bay Beach is the most popular, but moving away from the busy tourist spot will provide you with amazing views where you *might* just be the only one there.

Fabulous post Nikki! It just shows how many fantastic places there are for holidays in January. When I was younger I would have been tempted by the tropical islands... but now I have learned to ski, places like Austria and Switzerland for would be the best part - those snowy mountain views are beeeautiful!

The 12 Best Places to Travel in December

When thinking about the best places to travel in December, you may be tempted to view the month through the lens of Christmas—which is understandable, given the wealth of cities that go all out for the holidays . And while we’re always down for a European Christmas market or dazzling lights display, there are plenty of reasons to travel this month outside of the holly and the jolly.

Whether you want to get a jumpstart on ski season or escape the winter doldrums in the Caribbean, here are the 12 best places to travel in December.

Miami, Florida

Many people head to Miami in early December for Art Basel Miami Beach , a glittering, four-day confab (scheduled for December 8–10 in 2023) that lures both the fashion and art worlds. The lineup of artists includes 24 first-time participants (out of 277 total) hailing everywhere from New York to Seoul, plus several guest lectures and dining experiences.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Miami beyond the final moments of Art Basel, of course—namely a booming high-end hotel scene. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is an art destination in and of itself, with geometric metal walls and massive sculptures hanging from the lobby ceiling. Other luxurious amenities, like private butlers and a gourmet burger bar, make this the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. For a beachier (but just as luxurious) stay, head to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne , located about 15 miles from South Beach. Its ocean views and tequila-stocked restaurant are great any time of year, but this December welcomes a slew of holiday-themed perks, like eggnog in the lobby and peppermint pedicures in the spa.

Yellowstone National Park

If you haven’t visited Yellowstone in the dead of winter, you are missing out on one of the most incredible travel experiences out there. Not only will you escape the typical summer hoards that make it nearly impossible to see wildlife and popular sites like Old Faithful—starting in December, the park is closed to cars and will only allow snowcoaches and snowmobiles to enter—but the relative quiet and icy chills of winter make our oldest national park feel even more like a mystical wonderland. Just imagine: sleepy bison with snow-dusted beards, bright blue pools set against a blanket of white, and boardwalks billowing with steam from the surrounding thermal features.

There are only a couple of in-park lodges open in the winter, but luckily they are incredibly cozy and convenient. Located in the heart of Yellowstone, Old Faithful Snow Lodge will get an extra dose of holiday magic this December, with trees set up throughout the hotel, in-room Christmas sweets, cookie decorating stations, and visits from Santa. Guests can also book several outdoor excursions from the lodge, ranging from guided snowshoe tours to wildlife photo safaris.

The Azores, Portugal

This once-overlooked archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic is tailor-made for adventurers—think whale watching, hiking calderas, and rappelling down waterfalls. (The island of Terceira is home to the only volcano in the world where visitors can explore a chimney and secondary magma chamber, sitting side by side.) And while tourism has caught up to the Azores within the past decade, visiting during the winter gives you a glimpse of what Eden once looked like.

December isn’t chilly here, despite the archipelago’s Atlantic location—the Gulf Stream keeps the year-round temperatures surprisingly balmy, with the mercury rarely dropping below 60 degrees or so. The island of Santa Maria generally boasts the warmest climate, though swimming may be off the table in the winter. If you’re craving water time, pay a visit to a geothermally heated hot spring instead.

Salzburg, Austria

Germany tends to get most of the attention when it comes to Christmas markets (for good reason), but neighboring Austria can be just as festive and charming—especially in the city of Salzburg. It’s not a surprise that the UNESCO World Heritage -listed Old City, which served as the backdrop for The Sound of Music, also fills its famed Christkindlmarkt with song.

With roots dating back to the 15th century, the market’s sing-alongs and traditional wind music are as much a part of the festivities as the mulled wine and stands selling ornaments and fluffy socks. We’re not mad about the bauernkrapfen (fried pastries), either. The market earns extra points for being just steps away from Hotel Goldener Hirsch , one of the world’s oldest luxury hotels and a perfect spot to warm up between outdoor shopping sprees.

Just down the Caribbean coast from the Yucatán with a fraction of the tourism, Belize has transformed from a backpacker haven into a luxury destination over the past few years. (Bonus: It’s only a five-hour flight from New York.) Along with world-class reefs for diving and Mayan ruins for exploring, the country is known for its conservation efforts, particularly when it comes to protecting ocean life. Many hotels and resorts have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon, including Turneffe Island Resort , which goes to great lengths to support the population of Antillean Manatees in the nearby Turneffe Atoll. Guests may get a chance to spot the gentle giants while staying on the resort’s 14-acre private island, while gift shop purchases go straight to the Belize Manatee Conservation Program.

Aside from offering an indulgent, adults-only stay on a true white-sand beach, Matachica Resort & Spa provides interactive workshops to learn about the Belize Barrier Reef, including guided scuba diving trips and helicopter tours. Given that December 4 marks World Wildlife Conservation Day, we say there’s no better time to pay these forward-thinking hotels a visit.

Switzerland

Switzerland is always one of the world’s most beautiful countries, but it becomes downright magical come winter: city squares dusted with snow and mountainsides transformed into the best ski slopes on the planet. It can be hard to pick just one Swiss destination to visit in December, which is why hopping on the Glacier Express is the perfect introduction to this wintery wonderland.

The Glacier Express is an eight-hour train ride that connects two of Switzerland’s biggest mountain resorts—Zermatt and St. Moritz—but it’s really more about the journey than the destination here. The train passes over 290 bridges, delivering panoramic views of landmarks like the Oberalp Pass and Matterhorn, and it even includes three-course meals to really help you enjoy every second of the ride.

Charleston, South Carolina

If you want an immersive Christmas experience but aren’t a fan of cold weather, Charleston is the perfect destination for you. In fact, we’d argue that winter is one of the best times to visit, when temperatures hover around the 50s and 60s. Holiday attractions this year include the 34th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights (November 10–December 31, 2023), featuring an estimated 2 million twinkling lights, and Holiday Swing (December 2, 2023), a concert of reimagined Christmas carols courtesy of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

The city has no shortage of fabulous hotels, but some notable properties go all out for the holidays. The French Quarter Inn , voted one of the best hotels in Charleston by our readers, will be fully decked out with a Christmas tree and free gingerbread cookies in the rotunda, while the Sleigh Bell Suite comes with even more festive amenities: an in-room eggnog bar, freshly-baked cookies served by the fireplace, holiday movie screenings, and a special reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas from Santa himself. Over at The Spectator Hotel , personal butlers assigned to each guest can transform your room with personalized Christmas decorations, plus bring you any treats and drinks you request.

Whistler, Canada

If you’re desperately seeking slopes, you can’t do much better than the largest ski area in North America. With 8,171 acres of skiable terrain and hills ranging in difficulty from green to double-black, the twin peaks of Whistler Blackcomb truly have something for every winter sports enthusiast. Both the Big Red Express lift and Creekside Gondola were reworked a couple of years ago to hold more people, meaning the mountains will feel far less congested and visitors can enjoy even more rounds of powder.

Once you pack up your poles for the day, soak up all the après glory at Whistler Village. Here you’ll find the resort area’s largest concentration of bars and restaurants, ranging from the buzzy high-end seafood restaurant Wild Blue to the upscale yet relaxed Braidwood Tavern . In terms of hotels, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler looks (and feels) like a true fairy tale castle, nestled at the base of Blackcomb.

Santiago, Chile

​​Travelers often overlook Chile’s capital city in favor of splashier South American destinations like Rio or Buenos Aires—but we encourage you not to make that same mistake. Santiago is not only a superb base for outdoor adventure, thanks to its location between the Andes and the Pacific, but it’s an excellent standalone destination for anyone who loves great food, great wine, and plenty of shopping opportunities.

After exploring the city’s coolest neighborhoods, tack on a side trip to Valparaíso—the former seaport home of Pablo Neruda and current headquarters for the Chilean Navy. It’s just a two-hour drive here from Santiago, but you’ll want to plan to stay overnight (and not just because you’ll be drinking a lot of wine). With its colorful hillside houses and abundance of museum-worthy street art, Valparaíso is not an easy place to say goodbye to.

If you’re anything like us, emerging from two years of lockdowns and closed borders has inspired you to finally book that once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ve always dreamed about—like an expedition to Antarctica , for example. The white continent is at its best from December to March, when wildlife is active and the sun shines for nearly 24 hours a day. And while trips like these typically require a lot of advance planning, there’s still time to book a spot on an expedition cruise ship before 2023 wraps up (although you may want to use this time to start researching for next year).

Ponant has about a dozen sailings available through the end of December, with trips ranging from 10 to 15 nights and including stops in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Another great option is Quark Expedition’s “Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent” voyage, an 11-day trip with six departure dates within the month of December (plus many in 2024). Each sailing includes the typical stops, but Quark also started offering a majorly cool add-on a few years ago: alpine heli-trekking, in which guests board a helicopter (just imagine those views) and fly to typically inaccessible terrain to enjoy hiking or snowshoeing.

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 tropical isles, the British Virgin Islands are easily one of the best places to travel in December. The archipelago is the epitome of Caribbean relaxation with white-sand beaches and lush rainforests—not to mention some of the best hotels in the entire region. Richard Branson’s Necker Island is arguably the most famous resort, freshly reconstructed with an emphasis on sustainability. New wind turbines join the existing solar farm so that the resort runs on 90 percent renewable energy. Even the staff uniforms are made from recycled plastic.

Recent years saw the arrival of two new private island resorts, both of which appeared on our 2022 Hot List . Off the northern end of Virgin Gorda, Saba Rock ’s nine-bedroom boutique hotel boasts a bustling rooftop bar, spacious guest rooms, and a seemingly endless supply of water sports. Meanwhile, Branson struck gold again with Moskito Island , located just two miles away from Necker Island. Guests with deep pockets can choose from three private estate rentals, each with its own distinct style. Amenities like private chefs and house managers available to help 24/7—plus the chance of running into Branson himself on the tennis courts—offer a true taste of a billionaire’s vacation.

Paris shines extra bright during the holiday season, from the lights along the Champs-Élysées to store window displays that rival museum art installations. This year is a particularly great time to plan a trip, with inexpensive nonstop flights with French Bee (France’s first low-cost carrier ) and a crop of new hotel openings. Be one of the first to stay at Bulgari Hotel Paris or Hôtel Madame Rêve , housed in a former 24-hour post office—or choose from one of the many established hotels in the city.

• Ice Skating : There are 1,500 ice rinks in Moscow. The main one at VDNKh is the world’s largest!
• Parks : Moscow’s parks are just as enjoyable in winter as in summer. Many of them host cultural events, especially in the run up to the orthodox Christmas.
• Theatres : The Bolshoy Theatre is famous for a reason and it’s resplendence is best enjoyed when the wind is howling outside.
• Banyas : Therapeutic and traditional— banyas are an iconic part of the Russian lifestyle.

Moscow’s Christmas Markets

Moscow’s Christmas Markets are at the center of all the jolliness. Red Square’s market is the most frequented and perhaps the market that best embodies the spirit of Russian winter. However, it isn’t necessarily extremely authentic; catering primarily to tourists and, for the most part, it is uncomfortably crowded. The Christmas Village on Revolution Square is a far more genuine and affordable place to buy local goods. Another wonderful market, that’s more popular with younger Muscovites is the one at Gorky Park. While the traditional fare such as valenkis and pastila will be for sale, one might also find vegan hot chocolate and hand-crafted silver jewelry being sold from the quaint wooden huts. Pushkinskaya Square is also a great option, but perhaps the most authentic market out of all of them is the bustling market at Sokolniki is definitely worth visiting during your vacation in Moscow . Local produce takes center stage, but there are also handicrafts for sale. Haggling is common practice, so a few Russian phrases will definitely help in bagging a bargain.

As soon as they’ve learnt to walk, Russian children are taken on to the ice. Thanks to that, there honestly isn’t any need to go out to buy tickets to see figure-skating in Russia as almost everyone from 7 upwards skates like a pro. Despite their undeniable skill, they aren’t haughty about it so there’s no need for less nimble-footed foreigners to worry about stepping on to any of Moscow’s 1,500 rinks. Indeed, even a complete novice should not miss the opportunity to skate on the rink in Moscow’s recently renovated, mind-bogglingly big park, VDNKh, which happens to be the world’s largest, outdoor ice rink. You can also see the most amazing light and firework shows at VDNKh and due to its long ice-avenues, it never feels crowded. For a classic that never fails to impress, reserve skates in advance at the GUM rink right on the Red Square .

For those looking for a full day out, Gorky Park has it all. Along with ice skating, there’s also cross-country skiing trails and the major draw, the Ice Sculpture Festival, is of world-wide acclaim. Another wonderful park with so much on offer is Izmailovo Park. Though it is a bit out the way, seeing or even traveling on the iconic Russian troikas, laden with colorful rugs and fur throws, gliding through its tree-lined avenues make the journey worthwhile. There’s also folk dancing to be watched and heaps of warming food to be eaten. Young children will delight in seeing the park’s very own Ded Moroz (Father Frost) and his grand-daughter, Snegurochka (Snow Maiden).

Thankfully, from November to March, Moscow’s many renowned theatres open their doors for the cultural highlights of the year (most important ballet and opera companies go on tour in the summer season). The Bolshoi Theatre is without a doubt the most historic theatre in Moscow and, thanks to extensive restorations recently completed, it looks just as grand as it did when it held the coronation celebrations of Tsar Nicholas II. Despite its old-world appearance, almost all of its performances have screens with English subtitles which is a rarity in Russia. For a more refreshingly modern experience, try the Stanislavsky Theatre. It’s pastel blue and white interiors lead to a calm, almost casual atmosphere. But casualness most certainly doesn’t translate to poor performances; its contemporary ballets are simply world-class.

For those with alert ears, there’s a secret Christmas gift to be discovered right on the Red Square . No less captivating than the ballerinas of the Bolshoi, the otherworldly exclusively male “Doros” choir often goes unnoticed within the grandeur of St Basil’s Church . Quite unlike European choirs, the rich baritones and ancient Slavic tongues sung by this choir must be experienced to be believed. Their daily hymns are truly a gift to the ears that will last long after the snows have melted.

Another secret that tourists are often not privy to is the way to survive Moscow’s frosty winters. The answer is steamy, sizzling and sexy. But though it is true that the temperatures are head-spinning, a winter visit to Moscow would be incomplete without a session at the banya. To say that Moscow’s bathing houses of yore are grand wouldn’t do them justice. They could easily rival the Roman’s most advanced bath houses. Sanduny in particular, is a venerable institution that’s seen the likes of Pushkin to Naomi Campbell a lá nude during its 200 year history.

If you’re plotting a winter vacation around the US this year, I have some good news and some bad news…

Okay, it’s mainly good news. You’re spoiled for choice. The bad news is you need to confront every millennial’s worst nightmare and make an actual decision.

From warm winter vacations in the USA to frosty Narnia-esque winter wonderlands, there’s plenty of options to contemplate as you’ll see in this list of American winter vacation ideas.

And because my personal US travel experiences are limited to the cringiest of the cringe (think Cheesecake Factory hopping and stalking the cast of the Lord of the Rings ), I’ve enlisted the help of some true USA travel experts who are here today to dish out on the best winter vacations in the US!

So, below, you’ll find recommendations for the best places to visit in winter in the USA, from top travel bloggers who have made it their business to know this sort of thing.

1. San Francisco, California

The city by the bay offers a lot of bustling activities in the winter. 2. Telluride, Colorado

Telluride is one of the best winter destinations in the United States for many reasons. A former silver mining town in Colorado ’s Southwest corner, it boasts a unique Old West vibe and a great outdoor scene with incredible trails for mountain biking, hiking in summer and uncrowded ski slopes in winter.

Its central street, Colorado Avenue, boasts buildings from the late 19th to early 20th century that had been constructed during the mining boom of Telluride. Since the 1970s, the town has been revamped as a ski resort thanks to the efforts of Joseph Zoline.

What makes Telluride a great place to visit is its remote location – this town is located in the San Juan Mountains and requires over 5 hours of driving from the nearest major airport in Denver.

However, you can fly into Montrose or Grand Junction on Colorado’s Western slope, if you want a shorter commute.  The location of Telluride makes it more exclusive than other popular ski resorts such as Vail, Eagle or Breckenridge that can be easily accessed via Interstate-70 in Colorado.

Located in the box canyon, Telluride has no more than 2,500 residents and has been spared from mass development. Things are kept uniquely local here which made this small town so popular among people who have come to enjoy all things Telluride.

3. Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is a classy and cozy destination for a winter getaway. Known for being the location of many world class wineries, the comfortable winter weather in Napa Valley is perfect for sipping a cabernet on a heated patio.

Winter in Napa Valley is mild compared to other parts of the USA. While you aren’t likely to see snow on the ground, you probably won’t be wearing shorts or tank tops either. It is possible that it could be chilly and rainy, but it could also be sunny and warm enough that a jacket wouldn’t be required. As long as it’s dry, the weather is very lovely for taking any outdoor winery tours or doing a patio tasting.

Winter is also low-season in Napa Valley, which means you can visit some of the most famous wineries with next to no crowds. This makes for a more individualized and enjoyable tasting experience. Many wineries require reservations, but with less competition, chances are you’ll be able to visit whichever wineries you want with very little notice.

One hidden gem you must add to your Napa Valley itinerary is Robert Biale Vineyards. With views of the grape vines from their patio that also offer the occasional rainbow, a tasting here of their delicious red wine is a must. 

Fun fact – many of the wineries will offer wine variations from grapes grown on the “valley floor” versus those grown on Howell Mountain. Be sure to do a tasting that lets you experience both, as you will notice a minerality difference!

4. Bend, Oregon

Bend is Oregon ’s premier outdoor playground. Home to lakes, rivers, mountains, desert and unusual volcanic landscapes, it is a year-round dream for nature lovers and photographers.

In summer, Bend is a magnet for hikers, rock climbers, mountain bikers and water sports enthusiasts. Between November and April, it is the gateway to some of Oregon’s best skiing at Mount Bachelor. 

Unlike western Oregon, Bend sits east of the Cascade Mountains, where sunshine is in abundance. Even in winter, the town’s clear blue skies often reveal an incredible blanket of stars. 

For lovers of winter sports, Bend is an absolute dream. The area is a haven for downhill skiers and snowboarders. In addition, it contains ice skating rinks, sledding hills, and miles upon miles trails suitable for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. 

Though snow sports reign supreme during winters in Bend, many of the area’s hiking trails are still snow-free and accessible. To witness the best of the city’s scenery in winter, you can stroll through ancient Juniper forests in the Oregon Badlands Wilderness, follow the Deschutes River Trail through downtown, or meander below the soaring cliffs of nearby Smith Rock State Park. 

If you’re looking to warm up after a morning in the snow, you can visit the heated pool at McMenamin’s Old St Francis School, or head out of town for a soak in one of Central Oregon’s many fantastic hot springs. 

After a fun-filled day of adventuring outdoors, head to Bend’s quaint downtown for a delicious pint of beer at one of the town’s many microbreweries.

Bend has over 30 independent breweries—among the most per capita of any city in the United States. The city even has its very own Ale Trail, which is a perfect indoor alternative when it is simply too cold to enjoy the outdoors.

5. Mammoth Lakes, California

Mammoth Lakes is the perfect winter destination for those looking for snow-capped mountains, vast frozen lakes, and some of the best skiing in the USA! Imagine cozying up in a cabin, defrosting in front of a fire with some hot chocolate in hand and you’re picturing this incredible winter destination in California. 

Mammoth Lakes is most famous for the Mammoth Mountain ski resort which has California’s highest chairlift-serviced peak. It is known for having one of the longest ski seasons in the US that sometimes lasts all the way into July or August!

However, if skiing and snowboarding aren’t for you, there’s still plenty to do in the area! Bundle up in warm clothes and find a hill for sledding or hop in the car and search for the best frozen lakes at sunset. 

One of the best local secrets in Mammoth Lakes is an adorably quaint used bookstore in the town center called Booky Joint. You can spend hours searching through the genres to find the perfect book to curl up on the couch to read while the snow falls outside. 

Whether you’re searching for a cozy winter getaway or a ton of adventurous fun in the snow, Mammoth Lakes is the perfect US destination in the winter! 

6. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is one of America’s biggest and most exciting cities to visit. The destination shines all year, but there are a lot of things to do in Philadelphia that make it a perfect winter destination.

Philly is known as the birthplace of America and a city full of history. Independence Hall is a warm place to visit and escape the cold to see where the Declaration of Independence and American Constitution were signed. Best of all, free tours are conducted hourly and there are other must-see sites within a block like the Liberty Bell and American Constitution Center.

You can also find an exhibit at the site of America’s first Presidential Mansion. Many people don’t realize that Philadelphia was the capital of the nation as Washington DC was being prepared as the seat of government. George Washington lived just steps from the Liberty Bell and there’s a fascinating exhibit of that period in American history.

Christmas in Philadelphia is an exciting season in the city. There are holiday trees all over and the best ones to visit are the trees in LOVE Park and City Hall. Both are surrounded by Christmas Markets with vendors, food stands and entertainers on the weekends.

Outdoor ice skating is available at Dilworth Plaza next to City Hall and at Penn’s Landing on the Delaware River waterfront. Both are perfect places to skate with great city views and offer tents for drinks and refreshments after your skate.

If you have time, there are some perfect winter day trips from Philadelphia. You can reach ski slopes in the Pocono Mountains in under two hours. The botanical gardens of Longwood Gardens also present a seasonal holiday display of lights, decorations and floral masterpieces.

7. Key West, Florida

If you wish to escape the cold and enjoy some time in a warm winter destination, Key West will be perfect for you! 

Part of the beautiful Florida Keys , Key West is one of the most unique places to visit in the world. 

The most popular place to visit is Duval Street. You will find all the bars, restaurants and shops there. It’s a very lively street, perfect for grabbing a drink and listening to live music. In the evening, make sure to head to Mallory Square for the sunset celebration. The views are fantastic and the atmosphere is very festive! 

Of course, no trip to Key West would be complete without taking a photo with the Southernmost Point Buoy. As the name hints, it’s the southernmost point in the continental USA!

If you are up for a day trip, book a tour (or hop on the ferry) to Dry Tortugas National Park. This beautiful hidden gem in Florida features amazing snorkelling spots. Fort Jefferson also used to be a prison during the civil war. If you are into history, you will love this day trip.

Key West is also a great place to go on a ghost tour! There are many legends and stories about Key West and some of them are quite spooky.

Finally, you can visit the incredible museums! Key West used to be Ernest Hemingway’s home. If you’d like to see the famous journalist’s home, you can do so in old town Key West.

8. Marquette, Michigan

Tucked away on the coast of Lake Superior is the quaint college town of Marquette, Michigan .

Averaging around 150 inches of snow each year, it is a true winter wonderland and known as one of the snowiest cities east of the Rocky Mountains.

With miles of trails for snow biking, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing, outdoor enthusiasts travel to Marquette all winter long for adventure in the Northwoods.

If you’re looking for something even more exhilarating, try ice climbing on some of the beautiful sandstone cliffs at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

You don’t have to be a thrill-seeker to enjoy a winter vacation in Marquette.

Bring a pair of snowshoes for a gorgeous hike around the Presque Isle Park designed by Central Park’s Frederick Law Olmstead. Go for a spin downtown at the city’s ice skating rink before warming with a beer by a fire at one of Marquette’s local breweries.

For a truly unique Upper Peninsula experience plan a long weekend in February to see the start of the UP 200 dog sledding race. Hundreds of people flood downtown Marquette to see the racers and dogs kick off the big race on a snow-covered street downtown.  

9. Fairbanks, Alaska

With a population of just over 30,000 in the city proper, Fairbanks, Alaska is the second largest city in the state. It is also one of the best winter destinations in the USA.

If you’re dreaming of a white winter season, soft snow blankets this entire town, and at the start of the Winter Solstice, the entire city transforms into a wonderland with street lamps and storefronts decorated in tinsel, garland, and fairy lights.

Fairbanks is known for its winter activities, but the most popular things to do in Fairbanks in winter revolve around dog sledding, reindeer ranches, hot springs, and chasing the Northern Lights. Fairbanks is also close to the town of North Pole, home to Santa’s Workshop – a giant Christmas gift shop. During December, local volunteers dress up as Santa for visits and to answer Christmas wish lists from kids.

If you really want to make the most out of your trip, be sure to visit Fairbanks during one of it’s many winter festivals or events. If you don’t mind skipping the holiday season, the beginning of March crosses three different big events: the World Ice Sculpting Championships, the Festival of Native Arts, and Alaska’s famed Iditarod (technically not usually in Fairbanks, but it is the buzz of the city all month long).

Visiting during a festival or event will give you the opportunity to see a more cultural and artistic side of Fairbanks, and leave a deeper and more unique understanding of the city.

10. Wisconsin

Visiting Wisconsin in winter may not be at the top of many traveler’s lists, but it should be. While this Midwest state does boast some of the country’s coldest winter temperatures, Wisconsinites have embraced the frigid climate and created many fun and unique winter activities to enjoy.

The must-do winter activity in Wisconsin, of course, is attending a Green Bay Packers’ game. This professional American football team plays its games in an outdoor stadium, Lambeau Field. It’s been nicknamed “The Frozen Tundra,” and for good reason!

It’s not uncommon for temperatures to dip well below freezing and to be covered in a fresh blanket of snow while in this stadium. (The coldest game ever played here is known as the “Ice Bowl” and the temperature was -13 degrees Fahrenheit when the Packers took on the Dallas Cowboys.)

Enjoying some of the state’s natural beauty in winter is an incredible experience as well. The Apostle Island’s Ice Caves are in Bayfield, Wisconsin and a must-see.

They are caves along Lake Superior where the waves splash against the rock and begin to freeze to the sandstone cliff.

They are typically accessible in late January to late February, as Lake Superior needs to be frozen solid to walk to these stunning caves. (There are also TONS of cool and unique Airbnb’s in this area – such as treehouses and yurts!)

One of the state’s most popular tourist destinations in summer, Door County, is also a fantastic winter escape with far fewer tourists.

Some of the best things to do in Door County in winter are ice fishing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice skating, visiting wineries and taking a winter wine tour and sleigh ride, shopping at quaint family-owned shops, visiting the area’s art galleries and then warming up at night with an old fashioned and fish fry at a local supper club. 

11. Duluth, Minnesota

Also known as the “Zenith City of the Unsalted Sea”, Duluth rests on the shores of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota . It was originally settled by the indigenous Dakota and Ojibwa peoples, and later became a bustling port town with more millionaires per capita than any other city in the world!

Today Duluth is most known as a popular summer destination on the coast of the largest freshwater lake in the world (by surface area). However, there are plenty of things to do in Duluth in winter as well. The variety of indoor and outdoor activities make it one of the most underrated winter destinations in the USA.

Every winter Duluth hosts the Bentleyville “Tour of Lights”, the largest, free Christmas light festival in the country. The festival illuminates the Bayfront Park, where guests can walk through the light display while drinking hot cocoa or hot wine. You’ll want to dress warm for this, but it’s an awesome activity to do with kids, or even for a romantic date night. 

If you’re into skiing or snowboarding, you definitely will want to head to Spirit Mountain in Duluth. As most of Minnesota is flat, Spirit is without a doubt the best place to hit the slopes in the state. You can also go snow-mobiling or snow tubing in this area as well. 

If you’d like to stay inside during the winter, you could easily spend a weekend checking out the restaurants in Duluth . One of my favorite indoor activities is the Zeitgeist, an upscale American diner attached to a boutique movie theatre screening indie films. If you’re looking for a unique place to grab a drink, check out the Rathskeller speak-easy cocktail bar, located in the former Duluth City Hall building. 

12. Denver, Colorado

This winter why not head to Denver, Colorado for a weekend getaway. Close to the mountains if you feel like going skiing but also offering plenty of other things to do in the winter, Denver is the perfect winter destination.

As you arrive from the airport to Union Station you will be greeted by a historic train station decorated for the holidays to get you in the spirit. Union Station is amazing in itself for restaurants, coffee, and is the perfect spot to relax after your journey to Denver.

Want to get outdoors in the Mile High City? Head to the Skyline Park to go ice skating. The best part is access to the ice-skating rink is free if you have your own skates. Otherwise, rent ice skates for $9 USD for adults and $7 USD for 12 and under.

There are so many things to do in the winter in Denver, from exploring the food markets like Denver Central Food Market to seeing cultural museums like the Denver Art Museum. Also, if you are able, take a tour of the Denver Capital – they do offer those for free!

Finally, you won’t want to miss the huge 110-foot tree made of lights in the center of Denver during the month of December. If you are ever in Denver on a layover there are many things you can do in a short time, and it is easy to get into the city center by train. 

Fun fact about Denver: Denver Airport is the third-largest in the world spanning 35,000 acres and there are many conspiracy theories as to why it is so large! 

13. Joshua Tree, California

Many of the most beautiful places on Earth are simply too hot during summer to enjoy. California’s Joshua Tree National Park, which hovers around 99°F / 37°C for most of the year, is one of those places. But the milder months of winter, from December through to March, are absolutely ideal for exploring this beautifully bizarre desertscape. 

With some 794,000 acres to explore, incorporating two deserts (Colorado and Mojave), ‘JT’ is an adventure lover’s paradise – and the stuff of dreams for geologists and nature lovers. 

Climb the ‘Chasm of Doom’, created by a jumble of hulking boulders jammed into a tunnel-like canyon, or keep it a bit more chill with a gentle hike along the fascinating Indian Cove Trail, which hints at the many Native American tribes that once called these lands home.

The iconic yucca trees cast the most fascinating shadows throughout the day and all seem to have their own unique sense of self and character. They were named by Mormon settlers, who saw the branches reaching up towards the heavens and thought of the biblical prophet Joshua, who was said to point the way to the Promised Land.

Temperatures can drop a little low at night time to camp out during the winter, but there are plenty of hotels to stay at nearby. Check into one of the many classic Californian hotels in Palm Springs, most of which have some kind of link to rockstar royalty – Joshua Tree is after all something of an oasis for LA-based artists in need of privacy and solitude. Book a room at The Monkey Tree Hotel , where JFK and Marilyn Monroe famously spent a night together.

14. Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is a perfect trip for winter lovers. The entire park transforms into a winter wonderland!

Make sure to dress appropriately for your winter adventures. Leave the tennis shoes at home and opt-in for insulated winter boots that will keep your feet warm and dry. If you’re going hiking, wear microspikes or snowshoes to add some traction to every step. It will help keep you from slipping around on ice or slippery snow. Or if you don’t want to hike or snowshoe, you can go back country or cross country skiing.

Part of the park is closed during the winter months, but there are still many hikes to do. One of the prettiest winter hikes is to Nymph, Dream and Emerald Lake. The trail is 3.8 miles round trip.

It starts from Bear Lake and continues to the first lake, Nymph Lake. From there, keep going to Dream Lake as it opens up views of the peaks above and the frozen lake. If it’s not too windy, you can continue on to Emerald Lake which is also worth the views.

Even in the winter months, you might see wildlife activity in the park. Elk and bighorn sheep are common. Make sure to keep a safe distance from wildlife!

15. Mt Baker, Washington

Mt Baker in the northern Cascade Mountain range of Washington State is the perfect USA winter getaway if you like snowy adventures!

Mt Baker Ski Resort is one of the few remaining family-run ski resorts in the entire country. It has everything from beginner-friendly green runs to some off-piste skiing for more advanced skiers.

One of the best things is that there are rarely any lines for the lifts and the slopes are quiet since most people end up traveling to one of the bigger resorts. Prices are also much lower than those at nearby Whistler or other larger resorts. If that wasn’t enough, Mt Baker typically gets the biggest snowfall of any ski resort in the lower 48! 

If skiing isn’t your thing, rent some snowshoes from The Glacier Ski Shop in the small town of Glacier before heading up the mountain. While there are many snowshoe routes to pick, the Artist Point snowshoe trail is the most rewarding.

On a clear day, you’ll get views of Mt Baker and Mt Shuksan and it quickly becomes clear why the area is called Artist Point! The trail is 6.3km (4 miles) long and easy enough to follow as it’s well marked, just make sure to take plenty of layers as the weather changes quickly.

After some outdoor adventure, head back down the mountain to Glacier and grab dinner at Chair 9: their pizza is huge and delicious! And, while there’s no accommodation at the ski area itself, there are plenty of beautiful cabins with hot tubs around Glacier to rent out on Airbnb.

16. Leavenworth, Washington

If you can’t make it to Europe for Christmas Markets this winter, you can at least pretend you’re there! The Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth is just a bit more than a 2-hour drive from Seattle , but it feels a world away from the hustle of the Pacific Northwest’s biggest metropolis. As the snow starts to fall and the Christmas lights twinkle, Leavenworth begins to look like the scene out of a snow globe. Yes, really! There is a picture-perfect gazebo in the center of town where musicians dressed in traditional German garb gather to play carols, and beside it is a small sledding hill for the little ones.

During the month of December, visitors flock from near and far to see Leavenworth’s famed Christmas lighting ceremonies that take place on the weekends.

If you can’t visit in December (or just want to avoid the crowds), don’t worry because the downtown businesses keep their Christmas lights lit through the winter months, well after Christmas.

Fun fact: While Leavenworth is known for its Bavarian-inspired facades today, it wasn’t always that way. In an attempt to revive this former logging town in the 1960s, the city decided a German theme would be a good way to draw tourists to the area. And they were right! Today, much of Leavenworth’s economy revolves around the tourism industry.

There are many things to do in Leavenworth , but for a little adventure, rent a pair of snowshoes and explore some nearby trails. Or to kick it up a notch, head to nearby Stevens Pass for a day on the ski slopes. When you need to warm up, head to a brewery for a local beer, a hot pretzel, and a German bratwurst. If you’re lucky, you can enjoy your meal with live music in the background.

While there are plenty of nice guesthouses in and around the Leavenworth area, try choosing one with a hot tub. It is a magical place to have a hot soak as the snowflakes fall all around you!

17. New York, New York

If you’re looking for one of the best winter destinations in the USA, then look no further than New York City – a vibrant and cosmopolitan metropolis that comes alive with winter wonder and holiday cheer as soon as the temperature drops and the snow begins to fall.

Throughout the winter, special events pop up that make this a fun and exciting destination for locals and tourists alike. Start your winter visit to NYC with a trip to Rockefeller Center, where you can see the enchanting Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

While you’re there, you can also see the world-famous Rockettes kick up their heels at the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular, which held inside the one and only Radio City Music Hall.

Whatever you do, don’t go ice skating in Rockefeller Center since it is insanely crowded and ridiculously expensive. Instead, visit one of the many other outdoor ice rinks that pop up throughout the city, like the Standard Rink on the High-line or the Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers.

Next, visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral and marvel at the beautiful holiday-inspired lights and window displays that you’ll find at Saks Fifth Avenue.

If you have the cash to spare, you can also see the Nutcracker Ballet at Lincoln Center or do a bit of shopping (and eating) at some of the Christmas markets at Grand Central Terminal, Bryant Park, and Columbus Circle.

However, no winter trip to the Big Apple would ever be complete without marveling at the Christmas lights in Dyker Heights or visiting Rolf’s, a German restaurant that is known not for their food but for their out of this world Christmas decor. Just imagine vibrant Christmas baubles hanging from every surface of the restaurant and you’ll get a sense of just how stunning this place really is.

Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches and lush landscapes, with great weather year-round making it a great winter destination – especially for avoiding summer crowds.

Hawaii is full of diversity amongst its islands, which is why it is so hard to find a consensus on which island is the best one to visit.

Maui has wonderful luxury resorts, the Road to Hana for hiking and exceptional views, and the best sunrise on Haleakalā. Oahu has the famous Waikiki Beach, Pearl Harbor, North Shore beaches known for their waves and much more.

Families love to stay at Disney’s Aulani Resort on Oahu, with a fun pool complex including lazy river and several slides, calm cove beach, kids club, family activities and Disney Characters. Kauai is known as the Green Island because of its lush greenery and wonderful waterfall hikes. It also boasts the Grand Canyon of the South Pacific, Waimea Canyon State Park.

Hawaii, also known as The Big Island, is the largest Hawaiian island. The Big Island offers beautiful resorts as well as Volcanoes National Park where you can hike and visit fascinating areas covered in black lava rock. The park includes two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, the Earth’s largest volcano.

The village of Kona on the other side of the island is a cute town to stroll through. Stop at the Kona Brewery and taste a sampler or spend the evening on a Manta Ray snorkel excursion.

19. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

One favorite winter destination in the USA is Fort Lauderdale in South Florida. Head to what has become known as the “Venice of America” in the winter months to soak up plenty of sunshine and beach time.

Fort Lauderdale is growing a lot in popularity. For years it was overshadowed by its giant sassy neighbour, Miami (just 24 miles south) but slowly it’s becoming the Queen of Florida – quite literally. The gay scene of Fort Lauderdale  has mushroomed so much over the past few decades that it has made the city one of the top LGBTQ destinations in the world!

Going to Fort Lauderdale during the winter months is ideal because of the warm weather. December to March is quite warm in Fort Lauderdale (between the high 50s and mid-80s) and is outside of hurricane season, making it perfect beach weather.

One special insider tip is to check out the super cool Bohemian Eucalyptus Gardens. It’s located down an unassuming street with some pretty impressive street art and lots of cafes. A favorite is “Voo La Voo” which makes the tastiest crepes we’ve tried in all of North America. 

One fun fact about Fort Lauderdale is that it is nicknamed the “Venice of America” thanks to the many winding ribbons of waterways running through the city. In fact, a total of 300 miles of inland waterways run through the entire Greater Fort Lauderdale.

20. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans, Louisiana is known around the world as a great place to go for a fun time, especially for Mardi Gras. Equally noteworthy, and the reason many tourists continue returning to the city, New Orleans is famous for its unique, flavorful and world-class cuisine.

While many places in the United States are bundled up during the cold of winter, the people of New Orleans rarely need more than a light jacket. Winter in New Orleans is actually a great time to visit compared to the oppressively hot days in summer. 

In the event that it does get a little cold in New Orleans, it’s perfectly acceptable to walk the streets with an adult beverage to help fight off the winter chills. Just don’t try to take your hurricane on the street car – that is forbidden. 

New Orleans is full of history and vibrant local culture. For travelers who want to get off the French Quarter tourist trail, venture over to Frenchmen Street. This is a unique area with lots of bars and an eclectic clientele. 

Farther from the French Quarter, spend an afternoon uptown, strolling past the shops and restaurants on Magazine Street. After that, head over to St. Charles Avenue to admire the historic mansions from the comfort of a streetcar. Uptown New Orleans is one of the coolest, most beautiful neighborhoods in the USA.

Whether you’re in NOLA for a taste of some of best food in the United States, to listen to some great live music, or just there to have some fun, winter is an excellent time to visit.

21. Death Valley National Park

Death Valley National Park sits roughly 215 miles and 3.5 hours outside of Los Angeles , CA on the eastern edge of the state. Covering over 5,000 square miles of land, there is a lot to see in Death Valley! It is the largest National Park within the contiguous United States and spans numerous different landscapes.   

The park is filled with everything from rugged mountains to white sand dunes, deep canyons and a dry desert. Death Valley sits in the northern Mojave Desert – the same desert covering much of Joshua Tree National Park – and borders the Great Basin Desert. 

Because of its location, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it is the hottest and driest of all national parks, as well as one of the hottest spots in the world. During the summer months, temperatures often reach 120 degrees, making any outdoor activity miserable. However, in winter months, the weather is much more agreeable and allows for hiking and sightseeing in comfort. November through February is the perfect time to plan your trip. 

With over 30 hiking trails inside of Death Valley National Park to choose from, this is a great place to spend a weekend or more. The famous Badwater Basin sits at 282 feet below sea level, making it the lowest point in all of North America. The Artist’s Palette hills showcase colorful peaks that occur naturally.

The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes transport you to faraway lands as you hike over the tall sand dunes. Zabriskie Point is also mesmerizing, and the most perfect spot to spend a sunset. It’s hard to believe that all of these very different natural formations are inside of one park! 

22. Lake Tahoe, California

Lake Tahoe is one of the ultimate ski destinations in the United States, and with numerous resorts to choose from, great towns dotting its shores, and spectacular views, you can’t help but fall in love with it. The most popular winter activity here is skiing, and there are plenty of world class slopes on all sides of the lake.

One of the resorts – the soon-to-be-renamed Squaw Valley – even hosted the 1960 Olympic games and you can ski some of the same slopes the competitors used – or if you’re not quite as athletic as them, you can opt to pay a visit to the Olympic museum atop one of the lifts. There are also opportunities for tubing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

If you fly into the Reno airport (the closest commercial airport to Lake Tahoe), several resorts in the area will give you a free lift ticket for that day when you present your boarding pass. Be sure to take advantage of this!

If hitting the slopes isn’t your thing, you’ll still find plenty to keep you busy. Though there are frequent road closures due to snow and ice, on clear days a scenic drive around the lake will take your breath away. One favorite spot is Sand Harbor State Park on the Nevada side. Here, you’ll be amazed at the clarity of the water and maybe even see snow-covered boulders peeking out of the water.

In the evening, you can find cozy restaurants and bars filled with visitors swapping stories after a long day on the slopes. There are many great dining options and breweries in the small towns dotting the lakeshore.

Fun fact: Because of its immense depth, Lake Tahoe is the 6th largest US lake by volume (after the 5 Great Lakes), though it only ranks as #31 in surface area.

23. Woodstock, Vermont

Woodstock, Vermont is an incredible destination at any time of year, but when traveling in the winter, it is especially magical.   First of all, Vermont is a place that is nearly guaranteed to be snowy.

This area of New England has a long and cold winter and snow is a regular part of the program from late November through late March (and sometimes even in April, unfortunately).

Because of this, the mountainous state of Vermont is excellent for skiing, snowboarding, and other outdoor winter activities. But there’s so much more to enjoy during this season.

Vermont has tremendous New England charm and quaintness. And Woodstock, VT often called one of the prettiest towns in America, is a place where this is extra apparent.

A Currier-and-Ives style village, Woodstock has the look of a picture postcard, and when the streets are laden with snow, it’s like such art has come to life.

With covered bridges, antique stores, old homes, traditional Vermont food and drink, and winding rivers tucked among rolling mountains, Woodstock is a winter paradise.

At Christmas, don’t miss the Wassail Weekend, where Woodstock becomes a Victorian Christmas world, complete with horse-drawn sleighs, breakfast with Santa, and more.

24. Washington, D.C.

One of the best winter destinations in the USA is Washington, D.C. While Washington, D.C. is a top winter bucket list destination for many, it’s truly amazing year round. In the winter the city sees less visitors and school tours so it isn’t as packed.

You can take advantage of the holiday festivities and the regular touristy items like visiting the Smithsonian Museums, Zoo, Monuments, Memorials, the National Mall, Michelin Star dining, and outstanding plays and performances throughout the city.  

One of the main draws for tourism during Christmas in the annual National Christmas Tree lighting. Located on The Ellipse, next to the White House, this massive evergreen tree lights up the entire area. This annual tradition gets locals and visitors alike outside to celebrate the holiday.

Some of the other popular things to do in Washington, D.C. during Christmas are: the Christmas Market, exploring the light maze at Enchant, walking through the Zoolights at the National Zoo, GLOW – the art exhibition spanning across the area of Georgetown that you can walk through, and the candlelit tour that takes place at Mount Vernon.

One hidden gem about the city that a lot of outsiders don’t know is that there are several pop up bars that are decked out for the holiday throughout the season. You won’t know until you come, but do a little research to see who is hosting.

25. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona is known for its incredible red rock scenery and interesting topography that will leave you awestruck. Especially if you like hiking, Sedona is one of the best winter destinations in the USA. The weather hovers in the 60s during the day which makes it comfortable to explore until your heart’s content. 

The other equally big draw to Sedona is the healing culture. You’ll find energy healers, healing massages, and the famous Sedona Vortex .

The vortex is thought to be energy emanating from the whole city of Sedona but there are specific locations where the vortex energy is thought to be the strongest. Whether you believe in an energy vortex or not, most people feel great during their time in Sedona.

Sedona is filled with hidden gems but you absolutely have to see one of it’s most popular attractions, Devil’s Bridge. It’s a 4.2 mile out and back hike with the most incredible payoff. You can walk across the natural bridge that looks precarious, but is actually a wide path that doesn’t feel scary at all. 

Fun fact about Sedona: their McDonald’s is the only one in the world with green arches. Not that you’ll be eating at McDonald’s with all of the delicious restaurants available in the area! Check out my Arizona fun facts post for more.

The biggest mistake you can make in planning your trip to Sedona is not allowing enough time. With its close proximity to the Grand Canyon, many people simply do a day trip, but then wish they stayed for a whole weekend. Be sure you plan accordingly!
