About The Skatepark - Kona Since '77

Kona Skatepark was built in Jacksonville, Florida USA in the late 70’s, skaters from across the nation made the trek to the sprawling concrete mecca and helped shaped skateboarding to the way it is today. Since 1977 Kona Skatepark has been one of the most iconic skateboarding parks in the world, and you can experience it in Jacksonville’s Arlington neighborhood.

Kona has survived three economic recessions and all the ups and downs of the action sports industry. That has made it the “longest surviving privately owned skatepark” in the world via Guinness Book of World Records.

Kona has been home to a lot of “firsts” and groundbreaking moments like the invention of the modern “Vert” ramp, which has probably impacted skateboarding the most. In 1979, the Ramos family with the support of the community reopened the park out of bankruptcy and they dedicated to “The Youth of Jacksonville.”

The skatepark features concrete hills and a “snake run,” where guests can take a seemingly infinite number of paths. It’s even recreated in a level of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 game. From the thriving skateboard community, spirit and culture, more than 20 professional skateboarders have come out of Jacksonville, Fl in the past 40 years.

When you come to a place like this you’re going to have a great time, whether you’re 7 or 80, this is a place you can find that kind of a connection with. Now that the skatepark is old enough, people can look back and pick out those impactful moments. Though it’s impossible to simply pick one moment that is above all the rest – Kona skatepark is a big part of skateboarding history and continues to create more of those moments each year.

Dew Tour Returns for Summer 2022

July 29 – 30, 2022.

Carlsbad, Calif. (April 25, 2022)  — The annual Dew Tour pro skateboard competition and festival – powered by MTN DEW® – will return to Des Moines, Iowa on July 29 and 30 at Lauridsen Skatepark for the second consecutive year. The event will be a finals only skateboard competition featuring the very best skaters from across the globe, as well as a two-day festival with activities for all ages. The return of Dew Tour to Des Moines is made possible by its partnership with Catch Des Moines and Polk County, as well as Toyota, returning as the event’s Mobility partner. Dew Tour will be free and open to the public.

In 2020 and 2021, Dew Tour served as a global Olympic qualifying event for the Tokyo Games, which showcased its inaugural year of skateboarding. This year’s Dew Tour features finals only competitions in men’s and women’s individual Street and Park, as well as Adaptive competitions presented by Toyota in men’s and women’s Street and men’s Park. It will also mark the return of the Dew Tour’s Battle of the Shops, featuring regional skate shops that compete as a team against one another on the Street course. Des Moines’ Subsect Skate Shop will be the local shop competing against other midwestern skate shops from Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis and Minneapolis.

A myriad of Olympians are expected to compete at this year’s event, including Lizzie Armanto (FIN), Mariah Duran (USA), Aurelien Giraud (FRA), Nyjah Huston (USA), Aori Nishimura (JPN), Tristan Rennie (USA), Pamela Rosa (BRA), Bryce Wettstein (USA) and many more.

The Dew Tour Experience, a festival-style activation located adjacent to the competition venue, will offer fans a fun and free sponsor village, public skate pump track, food and beverages, pro athlete meet and greets and more. The entire Dew Tour event is free and open to the public, with general admission entry. A limited number of VIP ticket packages will be available; details are forthcoming.

The Dew Tour competition venue will be located within Lauridsen Skatepark, the largest skatepark in the United States, boasting 88,000 square feet of skateboarding paradise with two skate bowls, a skate promenade, a skateable sculpture, stairs, ledges and more. The skatepark, which opened in 2021, was built by world-class builders California Skateparks, who has served as the venue architects for Dew Tour since 2014.

5th Annual Ghost Ryders  Skatepark Competition Is a GO!!

After a 2 year COVID hiatus, The Delburne Skatepark will once again play host to BMXers, scooter riders, and skateboarders from central Alberta schools for an amazing, unique, and fun celebration of action sports.

Hosted by Delburne Centralized School , the competition is for any student currently in grades 7-12.  This year because of the 2-year break, there is a special category for alumni. This category is for any past participants in the Delburne comp who graduated in 2020 or 2021 and missed their last chance to compete.

The Delburne skatepark and this competition are both the result of an incredible relationship between the youth of Delburne, their school, and their community. Skateparktour.ca told this story in a 2017 post and video .

Students from ANY school or school district are welcome to come to Delburne and participate in the competition. Because it is a school-based event on a school day, schools will require certain paperwork to be completed. Boys celebrate successful Burton Latimer skatepark campaign

A pair of teenage boys said it was "absolutely amazing" that a skatepark they campaigned for had been opened.

Alfie and Jamie, both 13, started their bid for the park in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire, two years ago and gathered "thousands" of signatures in support of the plan.

They took their petition to a council meeting and the facility has now opened in the King George V Recreation Ground.

The town's previous skatepark was targeted by arsonists in 2019.

Alfie said they took action after growing frustrated with having to travel five miles (8km) to Irthlingborough to ride their scooters.

"It's absolutely amazing. I never thought we'd be here right now and I'm so happy," he said.

"People though it would be good for the community to have something else in Burton [Latimer] because all there is is parks."

The skatepark, which cost about £45,000, features a double half-pipe.

Jamie said: "I thought they [the council] wouldn't build one because the last one burnt down. We went to local shops to try and gather as many signatures as possible from people to support our petition."

Alfie's father Steve said the boys deserved huge credit for their community campaign

Alfie's father, Steve, said he was "immensely proud" of the boys.

"They were convinced they wanted to get something here," he said.

"They just chipped away, carried on and it's great to see the finished result."

Councillor Murray Scott said town planners were impressed by the passion the boys showed at a council meeting when presenting their idea

Murray Scott, a member of Burton Latimer Town Council, said: "We first met the boys when they were 11 years old and came to a full council meeting to present their thoughts.

"They put forward a pitch that was worthy of Dragon's Den and, as they left the room, we clapped them and simply said we have to help them achieve what they want to do.

"We allocated the funding, but it was the support they gathered from the community which pushed the whole thing through. It shows what teamwork can achieve."
