A Guide to Riding the Las Vegas Monorail

las vegas monorail travel times

TripSavvy /  Bailey Mariner

Every adult playground needs a high-tech people mover and despite millions of riders a year, the Las Vegas Monorail often feels like an overlooked resource. A pleasant way to take a beat and a rare chance to avoid the crowds and rush of Strip, for guests on the northern end of Las Vegas Boulevard it also provides a very convenient connection to all the action and attractions without the unnecessary burden of paying for a ride, or taxi.

Open daily at 7 a.m. and staying on track until at least midnight, all stations are located close at the rear of each property; something to note if you are not in mood for a potentially long, yet pleasantly air conditioned walk. But the walk does provide a different perspective of the sprawling layouts at each hotel leading you to restaurants and stores you might have previously missed.

The seven-stop, 3.9-mile (6.4-kilometer) elevated system along the east side of the Strip carries 5 million passengers annually with 81 percent leisure travelers and the remainder business/convention visitors.

Nine climate-controlled trains, each with four cars and 72 seats travel at speeds up to 50 mph.

The Las Vegas Monorail operates on Mondays from 7 a.m. to midnight, Tuesdays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m., and Fridays through Sundays from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m.

The Las Vegas Monorail is the first transit system in the world to fully integrate its ticketing system with Google Pay, so riders can purchase their fares online, then use their phones at fare gates for access. The monorail also offers scan-and-go mobile ticketing, with etickets delivered to phones via either email or text messaging. At the fare gates, riders scan the QR code and ride.

Tickets start at $5 for one ride. A 24-hour pass costs $13. A two-day pass is $23. For three days, the price is $29. Four-day passes cost $36. A five-day pass goes for $43. And a seven-day pass costs $56.

Beginning a journey at its most southern hub, the design of the MGM Grand terminal feels the most like a modern transportation hub. Forget any rumors you've heard about an extension to the McCarran International Airport, you still can't get there from here. This is as far along the Strip as the Monorail will extend for many years to come.

Reached beyond the resort's upmarket restaurant row, travelers also walk by the budget-minded food court, before making a turn at the Hecho En Vegas Mexican Grill. The ATM-style ticket machines found at each stop are easy to navigate, or you can buy from the attendant.

Once up the escalators, passengers can watch the trains disappear around a corner, making a turn to head back and pick you up.

From the MGM Grand, the almost four-mile journey to the final destination at the Sahara will take appropriately 14 minutes. During the day, you will rarely be without a seat and if you feel crowded, at each stop you have a few moments to move to the adjoining car. There's no conductor on board, so listen to warnings of closing doors. Inside, signage offers tips of the closest resorts and attractions along the route. The frequent announcements are clear and helpful, the ride is smooth and comfortable and security guards are easy to spot.

Departing every four to eight minutes, on the Strip-hotel side of the ride you won't always find much to see, other than parking garages, the backs of buildings and the occasional abandoned large sign, but as you begin your trip take a look to right and catch views of lazy river pools, cabanas and tennis courts.

Jumping off at the Monorail's next stop, the Bally’s & Paris Station, pedestrians will exit toward the Bally's food court, lesser visited retail stores, and the unusual sunken design of the race and sports book.

Next up is the Flamingo resort, across Las Vegas Boulevard from Caesars Palace. If you keep your head on swivel, below the tracks you can catch a view of the famous Battista's Hole in the Wall Italian restaurant seconds before the train comes to a stop. The walk from the station provides an enticing view of a section of the Flamingo's pool complex.

One minute later, the train pulls into the exit for Harrah's and The Linq. Scan to the left for a first glimpse of the Linq Promenade and if you take a moment to wait for the next train, this is an excellent high vantage point to take close-up photos of the High Roller attraction.

Stay onboard for the longest uninterrupted stretch on the Monorail track, snaking its way to the Convention Center Station. The four-minute ride features views of the attractive trees and greens of the Wynn Golf Club on the left. During high volume hours at a large convention, the monorail is frequently the best way to leave the crowds behind, avoiding traffic snarls and long lines for ride-share vehicles.

Guests and visitors at the Westgate will appreciate being on the second to last stop, helping the out of the way location become an easy link to the Strip in under 10 minutes. And at the final terminal on the circuit, take a tour of newly remodeled Sahara Las Vegas, a gateway to downtown and the freshest casino and dining destination on the Monorail map.

Monorail Operation Time & Map

Las Vegas Monorail Overview

Las Vegas Monorail

The Las Vegas Monorail, a 4-mile elevated monorail system, serves seven stops on the Strip and makes it easy to get pretty much anywhere you would like to go on the Strip . Its hours are very convenient, even for late night partiers, as it runs from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. pm Friday though Sunday.

So where does it stop? There are seven stations: the Sahara Station, the Las Vegas Hilton Station, the Las Vegas Convention Center Station, the Harrah's / Imperial Palace Station, the Flamingo / Caesars Palace Station, the Bally's and Paris Las Vegas Station, and the MGM Grand Station. As you can see, it takes you nearly everywhere. From each of these stations you are in easy walking distance of numerous Strip transportation.

It gets even better. The monorail is much more cost-effective than a taxi or car rental. Prices for tickets and passes range from $5 to $40. You can buy tickets online while planning your vacation or do it at ticket vending machines at every station.

The monorail is also environmentally friendly. One less car on the road means less pollution in our atmosphere. Furthermore, it is incredibly reliable—it is on time 99% of the time. Trains arrive every five to seven minutes during its hours of operation. However, unfortunately it doesn't provide Las Vegas transportation all the way to airport, you can book a shuttle for 12 dollars .

Las Vegas Monorail

Don't worry about discomfort on the monorail, either. It is climate controlled so it stays cool in the summer heat and warm in the winter.

In the future, the monorail will be even more convenient. Clark County awarded it a permit to be extended to the airport. Your entire trip will become a lot smoother once the expansion is completed.

In short, the monorail really connects tourists to the Strip, making it much easier to make the most of your time. Come ride this safe, comfortable and convenient Las Vegas Strip transportation system.

Public Transportation and Metro Rail Information

Las Vegas Monorail

The Las Vegas Monorail is a unique rail system that runs for 6.3km with seven stations in between. Opened in 2004, the service runs from 7am to midnight, 2am or 3am, depending on the day of the week. The fare for a single trip is set at $5.00 USD, although various day passes offer unlimited rides. There is no direct connection to the airport.

This transit system, often referred to as the ‘Monorail’, carries an average of 22,893 passengers per day. Unfortunately, specific information on fares is not included in this summary. The Monorail does not run 24 hours a day and does not have air conditioning. Passengers are not allowed to walk between platforms. An interesting fact about the Monorail is that it has been using driverless trains since 2004. The platforms are also equipped with screen doors.

The Monorail is operated by the Las Vegas Monorail Company. Operating hours are 7am to midnight on Mondays, 7am to 2am on Tuesdays to Thursdays and 7am to 3am on Fridays to Sundays. The fare is $5.00. For more information, visit the Las Vegas Metro Official Website or call +1 702-699-8200 .

A Glimpse into the U.S. Transit Systems: Las Vegas Monorail

Famous for its vibrant nightlife, casinos and gambling, Las Vegas attracts a large number of domestic and international tourists, making it one of the most visited cities in the United States. Its metropolitan area is home to approximately 1.9 million people. Although Las Vegas isn’t as large as other major US cities, it still manages to attract around 40 million visitors a year. Despite its harsh desert climate in the heart of Nevada, the city shows no signs of slowing down.

Many consider Las Vegas to be the world’s entertainment capital. The city is teeming with 5-star hotels, bars, casinos, water parks and other leisure and entertainment complexes. With such an influx of visitors, the need for an effective public transport system became apparent. This led to the birth of the Las Vegas Monorail in 2004, designed to provide convenient travel along The Strip, located south of downtown Las Vegas.

Despite its eventual success, the monorail system faced numerous challenges and delays at its inception, resulting in temporary shutdowns. A major concern was the unexpected detachment of train components during operation, creating a hazard for vehicles and pedestrians below.

After only two months of operation, the monorail had to be temporarily closed for the first time due to this problem. Service resumed in December of that year, only to be halted again in February due to complications with the power supply. However, this problem was quickly rectified. By 2006, the monorail was fully operational and even making a profit, despite its relatively short distance of 6.3km.

Lines and Stations

The monorail system consists of a single 4.2-mile (6.3 km) line running from the former Sahara Hotel and Casino complex (now the SLS Hotel & Casino Las Vegas) in the Winchester district to the southern portion of the famous Las Vegas Boulevard. The system includes seven stations, which, although small for a mass transit system, serve the city efficiently. Plans are underway to expand the system by adding five new stations to connect downtown and the airport.

An average of 13,500 people use the monorail every day. The trains can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h on certain sections and maintain a high standard of quality. Each train consists of four cars, providing comfortable and safe transport and a welcome respite from the intense Las Vegas heat.

  • SLS Station: This station was designed to bridge the gap between the historic Sahara Hotel & Casino (now closed) and the modern buildings that have sprung up around it. It is located within the SLS Las Vegas Resort, an entertainment hub with restaurants featuring international chefs, shops, luxury bazaars, pools and approximately 1,300 rooms spread over 30,000 square metres.
  • Westgate Station: Located within the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino complex, this station is famous for its Elvis Presley shows. The King” performed 837 sold-out concerts at this hotel (formerly known as the International Hotel). It offers themed rooms, arcades, restaurants and regular events featuring popular artists.
  • Convention Centre Station: Located in the building of the same name, it provides direct access to the convention complex, where numerous events and presentations are held each week. During major events, the monorail increases its frequency to serve this station every 4 minutes.
  • Harrah’s & The LINQ Station: Located across the street from Harrah’s Las Vegas, the LINQ Hotel and Casino and the LINQ Promenade, this station is surrounded by restaurants, bars and shops. Passengers can also visit the Brooklyn Bowl, a large performance space, and the High Roller observation wheel, which offers panoramic views of the city.
  • Flamingo & Caesars Palace Station: This station is located in the heart of the city, between the Flamingo Hotel, a performance oasis, and Caesars Palace, one of the city’s most famous and luxurious hotels. Passengers have direct access to a variety of restaurants, shops and nightlife. With 3,560 rooms, the hotel is the ideal place to stay.
  • Bally’s & Paris Station: Nestled between the Paris Las Vegas and Bally’s hotels, this station exudes the romantic charm of the City of Light, complete with a replica of the Eiffel Tower. The French architecture of the Paris Las Vegas hotel invites passengers to descend and explore its Parisian charm, complete with themed restaurants, shops, casinos and replicas of famous buildings.
  • MGM Grand Station: This south terminal is located at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. Known for its iconic hotel with an impressive 5,000 rooms and a variety of entertainment options from music and sports to themed parties, it’s the ideal location for tourists seeking the true Las Vegas experience without compromising on comfort and luxury.

Timetables and Schedule

The monorail operates every day, although hours vary according to the day of the week and demand. The typical timetable is as follows

  • Monday: Open from 7:00 am to midnight. This is the slowest day of the week.
  • Tuesday to Thursday: Open from 7:00am to 2:00am.
  • Friday to Sunday: 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.

Trains arrive at stations every 4 to 8 minutes, depending on passenger demand. During certain events, priority may be given to certain stations to increase the efficiency of the system.

A single trip on the Monorail costs $5.00 USD. Tickets can be purchased from Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) located near the entrances to all stations, from Customer Service Ticketing Offices located throughout the system, or online. These offices do more than just sell tickets; they are staffed by a dedicated team who aim to provide an excellent passenger experience, answering questions, providing assistance and giving directions where needed. All offices accept credit and debit cards as well as cash.

It’s important to note that refunds are generally not available once a ticket has been purchased, except in special circumstances. Any issues in this area must be resolved through an online assistance process available on their website.

Customer Service Ticketing Offices are located at the following stations and are open from 10:00 to 18:00:

  • Bally’s & Paris Station
  • Flamingo & Caesars Palace Station
  • Harrah’s & The LINQ Station
  • Westgate Station
  • SLS Station

MGM Grand Station doesn’t have an office, but there is a customer service desk on the property where patrons can cancel tickets regardless of payment method. Harrah’s & The LINQ Station also offers this service. These two stations are the only ones in the system to offer this facility and are open Sunday through Thursday from 9:00am to 7:00pm and Friday and Saturday from 9:00am to 9:00pm.

Ticket Types

In addition to the $5.00 single ticket, the company offers several other fares, mainly for tourists:

  • Day Pass: For $12.00, this pass allows unlimited travel within a 24-hour period.
  • Two-day pass: For $22.00 USD, travellers can make unlimited use of the system for a full 48 hours.
  • Three-Day Pass: For $28.00, this pass allows unlimited travel on the monorail for 72 hours.
  • Four-Day Pass: This pass allows unlimited rides for 96 hours for $36.00 USD.
  • Five-Day Pass: This pass allows unlimited travel on the monorail for 120 hours for $43.00.
  • Seven-day pass: For $56.00 USD, this pass provides 168 hours of unlimited travel.

Users may occasionally receive special offers, discounts or free tickets from partner businesses and companies that benefit from the Monorail. A special discounted rate is also available for Nevada residents.

Vending Machines

The Las Vegas Monorail offers Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) at all stations and many of the hotels and entertainment venues served by the Monorail. These TVMs feature intuitive touch-screen interfaces designed to make the ticket purchase process easy and fast. The machines accept cash, credit and debit cards. However, for cash transactions, the amount of change returned cannot exceed $20.00 USD (dispensed as $1.00 USD coins).

Tickets can also be purchased from Customer Service Ticketing Offices, online as digital tickets, or directly at some hotel and venue receptions. The price of online tickets may vary when discount codes are applied.

Regulations

Prohibitions.

  • Smoking is prohibited on trains and in facilities.
  • Passengers are not permitted to enter the driver’s cab.
  • Areas reserved for staff, train drivers or machinery are off-limits to passengers.
  • Begging is not allowed in stations or on trains.
  • Footwear is required for access to facilities.
  • Passengers under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances may be removed from the system and fined by the local authorities.
  • Passengers are not permitted to distract staff from carrying out their duties.
  • Deadly or dangerous objects are not permitted in stations or on trains.
  • Oversized items that cause inconvenience to other passengers are not allowed on the system.
  • Passengers should occupy only one seat on the monorail. Additional seats should not be used for luggage, bags or other items.
  • Personal music players are permitted only if the user is wearing headphones.
  • Any form of assault, harassment, intimidation or threat to another user of the system is strictly prohibited.
  • Emergency devices should only be used in genuine emergency situations.
  • Unauthorised distribution of leaflets or propaganda within the facilities is not permitted.
  • Throwing objects onto the monorail track is strictly prohibited.

Precautions

  • Passengers should remain behind the yellow line until the train has come to a complete stop.
  • To facilitate boarding and alighting, passengers are advised to stand on the platform to the side of the train doors, not directly in front of them.
  • It is recommended that passengers wait for the train to stop before disembarking.
  • Leaning against train doors should be avoided.
  • Do not obstruct the doors as this may cause injury.

Each station on the system is staffed by safety personnel trained to respond to emergencies. They are also equipped to assist passengers with monorail related matters such as vending machines, destinations, tourist attractions and general information. They can also provide assistance to people with disabilities.

In addition, all trains and stations are equipped with telephone lines that connect directly to the control centre. These are located next to the train doors and distributed throughout the stations. To use them, passengers simply pick up the phone and staff will answer the call. They should be used without hesitation in the event of an emergency.

For added security, the monorail employs specially trained dog units that can detect explosives or other substances. These can be deployed in response to any suspicious activity or package to ensure the safety of passengers.

Future Expansions

Two major expansion projects were planned for the monorail. The first, proposed in 2005 and due to start construction in 2008, was to extend the system 3.7km to the north-east with four new stations. However, the project didn’t receive federal funding and was shelved.

The second, more recent project is to extend the monorail south and connect it to McCarran International Airport. This proposal has met with opposition from taxi and limousine drivers, as airport trips are a significant part of their business. Hotels and casinos, on the other hand, have supported the project, which would provide greater convenience for their customers.

In 2008, the monorail company presented details of the project, aligning the plan with an ongoing airport expansion. The intention was to complete the monorail extension by 2012, the same year as the airport expansion. By 2015, however, the expansion project was still in the planning stages. Local authorities revealed that a public transport master plan was being developed, which included a new underground light rail system running under the Strip to connect the international airport with the city centre. Both systems would operate independently and serve as complementary services.

Fun Facts and Recommendations

All stations are named after or refer to the nearest major hotel they serve. Some are actually within the hotel grounds.

Pets are not allowed inside the facilities, so passengers need to be aware of this when travelling with their pets.

During major events on the Strip, the monorail can get crowded. It can carry about 67,000 passengers a day (five times more than a normal day), the equivalent of about 22,000 taxi rides.

Each train can carry 222 passengers, with 72 seated and 150 standing.

All trains are fully electric, so they do not contribute directly to harmful emissions.

Actual air pollution levels on the Strip have fallen since the monorail began operating, as people prefer to use it rather than other vehicles.

Each monorail train consists of 4 cars and has 48 wheels (8 load tyres, 32 guide tyres, 4 steering tyres and 4 lateral support tyres).

Connection with the Airport

There is no direct connection between McCarran International and the Las Vegas Monorail. However, passengers can easily bridge the gap by using complementary transportation services. Many passengers take the monorail from the northernmost station to the MGM Grand station in the south and then take a taxi to the airport, saving some money on taxi fares because of the shorter distance.

The same applies if you are travelling from McCarran into the city. You can take a taxi to MGM Grand Station and then take the monorail to your destination, saving money and enjoying the views of the city that the monorail offers as it travels about 18m above the ground at its highest point (9m average).

Las Vegas Monorail

Las Vegas Monorail

Besides thinking of the monorail just as a means of transport, just taking a ride on it is a Las Vegas experience in itself. It is a unique and delightful way of seeing Las Vegas.

The monorail is a cheaper alternative to taking a taxi when you need to travel longer distances in Las Vegas.

Is it worthwhile?

The monorail is a recommended option for solo travelers or couples that are staying in hotels which are located quite far from the center of the strip , such as Sahara or Stratosphere which are located at the end of the monorail.

However, the cost of the ticket isn't worth shorter journeys , and reaching the station at one end of the hotel is quite time-consuming.

Prices and tickets

The cost of an individual ticket is quite expensive so it is worth considering a multipass if you plan to use the monorail several times during your stay in Vegas.

Where to buy the tickets

Currently, the easiest way to purchase a pass for the monorail is to buy a mobile ticket using your smartphone or mobile device. You will then sane the pass at the ticket gate when you arrive. You may also print the ticket at home if you want. You can also purchase the ticket when you arrive at the station.

The monorail operates from 7 am to 2 am , Monday to Thursday. Friday to Sunday the service is extended until 3 am.

It runs almost parallel to the Strip, with stations at the following stops: Bally’s/Paris, Flamingo, THE LINQ/Harrah’s, the Las Vegas Convention Center, and Westgate Las Vegas .

The final stop of the monorail system is the Sahara Las Vegas on the Strip’s northern end . The ride takes approximately 15 minutes to get from end to end. Additionally, the monorail operates every day of the week, with the following time schedules: Monday between 7am and 12am, from Tuesday to Thursday from 7am to 2am, and from Friday to Sunday between 7am and 3am.

Visitors can purchase tickets to use the monorail, with the option of an unlimited pass for a single day and multiple-day passes for more convenience. The unlimited ride passes are popular with those who would like to explore Las Vegas at their own pace.

Monorail Map

Las Vegas Monorail Map

Are you looking at the Strip from your hotel room and wondering how you’re going to get around with all that traffic? You have three choices; hoof it, put up with bumper to bumper traffic, or buy a horse... wait, Vegas has a monorail! Las Vegas has a great monorail actually. It’s a mystery why this gem isn’t more popular. Along with being the absolute fastest way to get from A to B on the Strip, normally it’s not too crowded.

About the Las Vegas Monorail

The monorail system started as a joint venture between MGM Grand and Bally’s Hotel – and if two competing hotels coming together to plan a way to make everyone’s Vegas trip more convenient (while making it easier for them to leave their specific hotel) is amazing, what’s even more amazing is that the monorail system serving the Strip turned into a non-profit. Imagine that. The Las Vegas Monorail Company (LVMC) was formed in 2000 and is the only privately owned public transportation system in the United States.

It features the first fully automated control network system for driverless operation. It is one of the most advanced urban transportation systems in the world. Pretty nifty for a small Western city.

Prices: $5 for a single ride. $12 for an all day pass. $28 for a three day pass.

Hours: Monday – Thursday           7 a.m. to 2 a.m.            Friday – Sunday                7 a.m. to 3 a.m.

This map will help you understand the Las Vegas Monorail route.

Las Vegas Tram System – 3 Free Monorails on the Strip

The Las Vegas Strip is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world. The strip, officially named, Las Vegas Boulevard, is four miles of excitement and entertainment, especially the first three miles of the strip where the majority of casinos are located.

The best way to enjoy The Las Vegas Strip is to start at one end and work your way up or down the strip, popping in and out of the world-famous casinos and hotels. However, not everyone is excited about walking three to four miles under the bright Nevada sun.

The monorail tram to and from Mandalay Bay

The monorail tram to and from Mandalay Bay

There are three free trams operating between Mandalay Bay and Treasure Island that can help you stay off your feet and still enjoy the majority of Las Vegas Boulevard.

The trams are not the same system as the official Las Vegas Monorail system that operates on the East side of the strip. The Las Vegas Monorail is a ticketed train whereas the three free trams are operated independently and paid for by the casinos they serve.

Planning to buy the 3 day monorail pass for my parents on their first 3 days in vegas but I wonder if it will be worth it? They will for sure be 'hotel hopping' throughout the strip and thought it would be. I also read that getting to the monorail stations will require a lot of walking? Any insights will be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Probably not. But without knowing where they’re staying and where they plan on going it’s just a guess.

I lived in LV for a decade and have visited at least 100 times and have never stepped foot on the monorail.

las vegas monorail travel times

The stations are not as easily located as one wants. So also a no.

' class=

it’s something to do. kind of like watching trying too hard fountains or a big loud propane torch and drums

BUT. not really an efficient means of multi day transport along the strip.

it’s funny that the free rails (excal, park to bellagio, mirage to TI) are useful but the pay one isn’t really

If they are staying on the west side of the strip, it's a hard no.

Even then, since day passes are 24 hours and 3 day passes are 72 consecutive hours, the 3 day pass may be wasted over a 24 hour pass and a possible second 24 hour pass.

Another no vote. It’s not as easy as it looks.

The only time I'd give it a "maybe" is if there is a particular place they want to go and they are relatively close to a tram station at both ends. Even then, if it's a one-off, using Uber/Lyft is likely a better use of time & money.

As someone else mentioned, the free trams can be very useful, depending on where they are staying.

Tell us where they are staying if you want any intelligent answers.

Staying anywhere else and staying on the Strip then NO.

+1 for questioning its value….

LVCVA unveils $457.5M spending plan for 2024-25

T he Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board of directors on Wednesday unanimously approved a $457.5 million operating budget in one of the shortest meetings on record.

It took just 10 minutes for the board to open and close a public hearing and vote without remarks on the spending plan for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

All board members participated remotely and no one addressed the board during the public hearing.

The mission of the LVCVA is to allocate financial, physical and human resources to market, advertise and undertake branding initiatives for sports and special events and to efficiently operate and maintain facilities and transportation through the selling of the destination.

The operating budget is part of a $1.113 billion overall package when including a capital expenses project fund, a separate capital fund for the Las Vegas Convention Center District expansion plan and debt service on capital projects.

LVCVA Chief Financial Officer Ed Finger briefed board members on the budget after an initial review on a preliminary budget earlier this month. The final budget was unchanged from the earlier presentation.

The fiscal year begins July 1.

The LVCVA is in the midst of a 2½-year, $600 million convention center renovation project that will take some of the exhibit halls off line, but bring the entire facility up to the same standards established with construction of the $1 billion West Hall.

Other big-ticket expenses in the 2024-25 budget:

— $103.6 million to advertise the Las Vegas destination.

— $48 million to sponsor special events to attract visitors to Las Vegas.

— $25.5 million to maintain transportation amenities, including the Las Vegas Monorail and the Vegas Loop underground transit system.

— $25 million in community support that goes to Southern Nevada municipalities.

— $24.5 million for employee salaries and benefits.

The LVCVA expects to generate $460.9 million in revenue, including $360 million in taxes on motel and hotel rooms paid by visitors, and $97.1 million to rent space in exhibit halls at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

9 immersive experiences in Las Vegas you should book ASAP

VEGAS-dropcap-L.png

Las Vegas, a city that markets itself as a place to play, is a natural fit for immersive experiences. And now the hard part: What is immersive?

Broadly speaking, we are defining immersive as anything that feels as if we are entering a story. It can be a show, an attraction or a cocktail bar, but the key is that there is some sort of theme throughout, so much so that nearly everywhere we look the spell is not broken.

It’s not always an exact science, of course, but the focus is less on hotels and casinos with a design motif and more on a space such as Play Playground, which dedicates itself to creating a world in which we are surrounded by full-size, physical games.

Planning your weekend?

Stay up to date on the best things to do, see and eat in L.A .

Or a theatrical production such as “Particle Ink,” in which we, as guests, become participants. Even a venue such as the Sphere can qualify, as its curving 270-degree screen — about the size of four football fields — invites us to partake in a slightly active role. We must look above and below to get a sense of the imagery before us.

Immersive entertainment asks us to lean in in some way, to feel as if we must actively engage with our surroundings to get the most out of them.

And Las Vegas, a city that prides itself on fantasy and escapism, is quickly becoming an immersive destination. These are some of our favorites.

’100 deadliest days’ of the year are upon us: How you can stay safe

In each of the past three years, more than 100 fatalities have occurred on Nevada roads during the three full months in the span between the two holiday weekends.

Memorial Day marks the beginning of what’s known as the 100 deadliest days of the year on roa ...

Memorial Day marks the beginning of what’s known as the 100 deadliest days of the year on roadways.

With teens and college students free from classes and families on vacation, there is more activity on the road. That increased activity during the span between Memorial Day and Labor Day leads to an uptick in crashes, including many involving younger drivers.

Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft said it’s a good time to talk with teens and other younger drivers about the dangers of driving impaired and for older drivers to refresh themselves on the rules of the road.

“As we enter into a problematic time of year, it’s an important time to remind everybody in this community that they have a role to play when it comes to saving lives,” Naft said.

Although the message is mainly aimed at teens on break from school for the summer, all drivers should be cognizant that more motorists are on the road.

This year has already been a deadly one for young people on the roads, with 14 fatal crashes involving those between the ages of 14 and 21, according to UNLV’s Road Equity Alliance.

In June, July and August, 112 fatalities occurred on roads in the state last year, with 104 during the same three months in 2022, and 101 over that stretch in 2021, according to state data.

With more fatal crashes involving people in their 20s compared with the number of crashes involving teens in Clark County, parents are encouraged to remind their older children about the dangers of impaired or risky driving.

“Young people losing their lives change communities,” Erin Breen, director of the Road Equity Alliance, said in a statement. “No matter the age of your child, remind them to wear their seat belt, have a sober ride home, don’t speed and pay attention behind the wheel.”

Parents should communicate with their children about safety tips, both as pedestrians and as drivers. Motorists thinking about drinking alcohol or using legal recreational drugs should ensure they have made arrangements for a designated driver or ride-hailing services to stay safe.

“Just because they (pedestrians) might be in the right and walking in the right of way doesn’t mean that the cars can see them,” Naft said. “We have to remind our younger drivers and older drivers alike that impaired driving is not worth the risk. There are so many options available to people now and it starts with making a plan before you start to consume.”

If everyone plays their part, the negative connotation of the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day doesn’t have to exist, Naft said.

“It doesn’t have to be the 100 deadliest days,” Naft said. “This is a man-made problem and man-made solutions (are) here, and it starts with ensuring that you’re not impaired when you get behind the wheel.”

One option to help keep residents and visitors safe for Memorial Day are Lyft ride credits.

Through midnight Tuesday, anyone can use the code SAFEMEMORIALDAY on the Lyft platform to receive $20 off one Lyft ride. The promotion is open to new and existing Lyft users.

Workers at Elon Musk’s Boring Co. accidentally dug too close to a supporting column of the Las Vegas monorail last year, forcing officials to briefly halt service

Elon Musk founded the Boring Company in 2016.

Workers at the Elon Musk–owned tunneling startup the Boring Company accidentally exposed the foundations of two pillars supporting Las Vegas’s elevated monorail train last year, forcing county officials to temporarily halt service on the public transit system on at least one occasion, according to documents obtained by Fortune .

The incidents, which affected the monorail linking some of the most popular casinos and hotels adjacent to the famed Las Vegas “strip,” caused officials to briefly declare a portion of the monorail an “unsafe structure” in one violation notice issued in June.

The Boring Company is in the process of trying to dig a network of underground tunnels that will crisscross Las Vegas and, it hopes, eventually become a futuristic public transportation system for the city using autonomous electric vehicles. The revelation of the collateral damage to the monorail, which the Boring Company and county officials quickly fixed, comes on the heels of Fortune’s previous reporting about unsafe working conditions for employees of the privately owned Boring Company, which, according to its website, “creates safe, fast-to-dig, and low-cost transportation, utility, and freight tunnels.”

The first incident involving the Las Vegas monorail occurred on June 15, when Boring workers were searching for an irrigation pipe as they worked on the Boring Company tunnel between the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Westgate Resort and Casino, which has since been completed.

Near the valet entrance to the Westgate’s casino, a Boring employee was using a SANY machine, approximately the size of a small excavator, to cut through the gravel, earth, and landscaping, when a worker cut earth away from the base of one of the monorail columns—exposing the base of a column that supports the public transit system, according to violation and county records obtained by Fortune via a Freedom of Information Act request, photos taken before and after the incident that were shared with Fortune , and a former Boring employee who was working nearby at the time.

“You could see the corner of it,” says a former Boring Company employee who was working just nearby and arrived on site a few hours after the incident. The employee recalls a handful of men in suits arriving on-site some time after the incident, pointing and looking at the column.

las vegas monorail travel times

Clark County regulators ordered the monorail, which had been running and transporting passengers that day, to cease operations while a third-party engineering firm was brought in to perform a structural assessment of the monorail and make sure the column wasn’t at risk, records show. The following morning, on June 16, a construction company covered the exposed area of the column with a cement mixture, according to the records. County officials kept the monorail shut down until 7:30 p.m. on June 16.

But a few months later, a similar incident occurred while Boring workers were attempting to grade the land—also on the Westgate property—this time exposing the base of Column 47, another monorail column nearby, according to another notice of violation that was issued mid-October. In total, Clark County issued three violations related to the two monorail incidents, accusing the Boring Company of doing grading work without a permit and creating a potential hazard by exposing the base of two monorail columns.

“Staff inspection findings include an exposed pilecap for Monorail,” one of the notices of violation regarding the October incident reads. “An existing structural foundation has been exposed, a potential hazard has been created.”

A spokesperson for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which purchased the monorail in 2020, said that in October, its monorail operations contractor “raised a concern that turned out to be unfounded” and that “there was no shutdown in October.”

“In June 2023, TBC was fixing a broken irrigation line and inadvertently exposed a Monorail foundation, so we took the correct steps to repair that, including pausing operations for a day,” the person said.

Both incidents add to a series of safety episodes that have taken place since the Boring Company began work to expand its existing tunnel system—currently a 2.4-mile , one-way underground conduit in which chauffeured Tesla cars transport tourists underneath the Las Vegas Convention Center—throughout the rest of the city of 640,000 people and the broader county. A Fortune investigation published in February found that an enormous concrete bin had collapsed right in front of the Las Vegas Convention Center after being overfilled, and that more than a dozen Boring Company workers have been burned by chemicals or otherwise injured in the tunnels during construction of a tunnel to the Wynn and Encore Resorts. Former Boring employees, including its safety manager, described how pressure to meet Musk’s lofty goals led to a disregard for safety, and employees reported incidents when employees could have died.

‘We put the public at risk ’

The Las Vegas Monorail, which first started service in 1995, is one of the city’s most well-known public transit systems—transporting locals and visitors along 3.9 miles of the Las Vegas Strip between the MGM Grand Casino and the Sahara Las Vegas, including stops at the Convention Center and the Westgate Resort. Approximately 4.7 million people ride the monorail each year—equating to about 90,000 people per week, according to the LVCVA.

The former employee, who spoke to Fortune about the June monorail incident, had been working at the Westgate project site and was disturbed by the company’s error. “We put the public at risk for anybody who was on that monorail at that time,” the person said, noting that they felt that Boring managers seemed subsequently to be more focused “on getting things up and running to dig than [fixing] the problem that we caused.”

Clark County provided violations, permitting, and engineering letters, as well as photos associated with the incident, but had not responded to specific questions by the time of publication. A spokesperson for the Westgate Resort declined to comment. Boring Company and a representative of the engineering firm that worked at the site did not respond to Fortune ’s requests for comment.

According to the Boring Company’s latest permit applications, submitted earlier this year, the company is seeking to dig two tunnels between the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, near the Las Vegas airport, and the Convention Center. There are also several permits pending within the city limits of Las Vegas.
