Fodor’s Expert Review

Scenic Tours was founded in Australia in 1986 and in 2008 the company began building its own river ships, which it dubbed Space-Ships. The moniker is meant to invoke how spacious the experience is onboard, with indoor-outdoor balconies known as Scenic Sun Lounges added to the fleet in 2012 and an average of three guests for every crew member. Staff include butlers who are trained at an academy operated by Scenic. In 2014, sister brand Emerald Cruises began, which is a more casual alternative the luxury experience onboard Scenic. From the introduction of itineraries in Southeast Asia and Portugal’s Douro in 2016 to cooking classes in France in 2017, Scenic has continued to expand its geographic and culinary offerings. The cruise line took a huge step in 2019 when it debuted its first 228-passenger yacht, Scenic Eclipse; identical ship Scenic Eclipse II debuts in 2023. With the yacht product came more beverage and dining concepts, as well as oceangoing itineraries that span Antarctica, Greenland and even the Northwest Passage to Australia, Japan, and Polynesia.

Scenic is cruising experience for the discerning traveler. While price points can be steep, nearly everything for your vacation is included in the fare.

Top Reasons to Cruise

Is this line right for you, what to expect on board.

Presenting itself as a 6-star cruise line, Scenic does its best to impress with its gastronomical offerings.

Most ingredients are locally sourced, and vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free diets are all easily accommodated. Everything is included in the price of the cruise, so indulge in that extra splash of handpicked local wine — it’s on the house. In addition to fine dining and casual venues onboard river and yacht ships, there is also room service, a fully restocked mini-bar with snacks, and plenty of refilled still and sparkling water in the cabins. Gourmet cuisine is never far.

Space-Ship venues vary by ship but transcend a single main dining room to include a teppanyaki on Scenic Aura or a globally inspired Chef’s Table dining experience on Scenic Spirit. The flavors of other alternate dining venues lean toward French, Italian, and Portuguese influences. Guests booked in top-tier suites can enjoy their own private dining room.

There are multiple restaurant aboard each one of Scenic’s yachts, ranging from a casual cafe to sushi bar and contemporary French dining to a custom chef’s table experience.

River and small-ship cruises are not typically known for rowdy entertainment offerings, but Scenic does its best to amuse guests with music in the evening themed to your itinerary — for example, a French chanteuse in France or a Bavarian brass band in Germany.

Native performers are invited onboard river cruises for local color, such as a Hungarian folk ensemble or a glass-blowing demonstration. A once-per-cruise evening excursion is included in the cruise fare and provides an exciting sense of occasion for the entire ship.

Back onboard, culinary demonstrations and special lectures — like how river locks work — keep the mind sharp. In France, guests are treated to a full cooking class from a local chef. On Scenic’s yachts, there is an actual theater where performances take place, as well as guest lectures. There is also a full library and a full bar to keep idle cruisers busy.

Scenic touts “all-inclusive wellness,” which means its river ships feature a fully outfitted fitness facility as well as luxurious touches like a salt therapy lounge.

Select Space-Ships feature hydrotherapy in a Vitality Pool. Scenic yachts feature the stunning 5,920-square-foot Senses Spa, available to all guests, with indoor and outdoor plunge pools and Jacuzzi tubs, as well as a gym; yoga and Pilates studio; and thermal loungers and steam rooms to decompress. Massage treatments as well as facials and alternative therapies, like Tibetan bowl sound healing, are available for an additional charge on Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II.

Scenic passengers are encouraged to do as much or as little as they want throughout their vacation, with options available to cycle in port or participate in a guided hike.

Key cruising tips

Your shipmates.

The guest list on a Scenic cruise consists primarily of affluent English-speakers, with a large contingency of retired couples or friend groups, but don’t be surprised to find lavish family reunions or posh honeymooners in the mix. Kids are a relatively rare sight onboard, but teens traveling with their parents aren’t uncommon.

Daytime dress on a Scenic river or yacht sailing is largely dependent on the destination and your planned activities. Comfortable walking shoes are always advisable, as are a sun hat in the Amazon or long underwear in the Arctic. Packing lists tailored to your cruise are typically sent by post or email or can be found by visiting the Scenic website.

Onboard, however, requests smart casual dress for dinner, which translates to button-ups or Polos for with trousers and dresses. Jackets and ties are welcome, but not required.

Junior Cruisers

Children under the age of 12 are allowed onboard Scenic but discouraged — except for Christmastime itineraries on Europe’s rivers. Passengers under the age of 18 must share accommodations with another adult and be accompanied at all times.

Scenic prides itself on white glove service, with its own butler academy that trains a team of experienced butlers who staff its river ships and yachts. Intuitive, personal service designed to impress is the goal across the Scenic brand, offering someone to cater to your every whim day or night, whether that’s a different pillow or an assortment of in-room canapes. Included with your designated butler are concierge services; garment laundering or pressing; shoeshine; and ensuite drink service. Guests on the Diamond Deck can receive in-room breakfast and top-tier suites can enjoy someone else doing the unpacking while they enjoy a complimentary bottle of Champagne.

All tips and gratuities for hotel staff, porters, local guides, drivers, and waitstaff is included in the price of a holiday with Scenic. Tips for meals, drinks, taxis, and treatments outside of the itinerary are not included and left to the guest’s discretion, with a recommended 10 to 15 percent gratuity.

Past passengers

The Scenic Club loyalty program is a points-based system, with more points awarded based on upgraded accommodations and length of trip. Currently, membership is only available to guests with a permanent U.S. address. Participants are automatically enrolled as Gold members after their first cruise, earning a $200 future cruise credit; referral bonus; choice of backpack or satchel on all future sailings; and advanced notice of itineraries and cruise line news, with the help of a dedicated member booking agent.

There are additional Platinum, Diamond, and Emerald tiers. Platinum members jump to complimentary limousine transfers before and after travel, or a free hotel stay if transfers are unavailable; complimentary hotel on any trip 20 days or more; and premium luggage offerings, as well as members-only events. Diamond members also receive chauffeured limo service and a choice of a $100 Visa gift card or hard-sided suitcase. On Scenic Eclipse, Diamond members receive additional perks, like a spa treatment, included laundry service, and priority embarkation. Emerald members are the crème de la crème of Scenic guests, receiving all of the above loyalty benefits as well as upgraded hotel stays; a $300 future cruise credit; and a lapel pin, among other perks.

Fantastic holiday

We have just returned from a Vietnam and Cambodia tour with Scenic on the ‘Scenic Spirit’, it was a fabulous experience. Scenic were very helpful on tailoring our holiday to travel through Dubai, staying for a week in Dubai at each end of our cruise. Although on the face of it Scenic aren’t cheap, when you take into account all of the included extras (excursions, drinks, butler service etc) the overall value of the holiday was good. Scenic used knowledgable local guides in each country, which added to the authenticity of the experience. Overall we found Scenic a fabulous company to deal with, the staff were helpful and friendly and nothing was too much for them. We will definitely use Scenic again, and I’m already planning my next adventure with them.

Never again

Seasoned cruise traveller, first time Scenic River cruise - never again. The only thing 5*star about this company is their marketing - over promise and under deliver. Pleasant staff but this must work within very rigid guidelines - I have never encountered a more non guest friendly cruise company. Had a junior suite, a butler is mere figment of their marketing BS - decor was chrome and mirrors and the food and wine and embarrassment.

This particular cruise ship lack

This particular cruise ship lacks entertainment for guests. No small band, no comics, no shows, no casino. The tours are also very short timeframe and the ship usually docks in the afternoon in mosts cities leaving very little time for guests to leave the ship and enjoy the places you are visiting. Not much information is provided by cruise regarding tours, times, docking etc. everything is a guessing game I personally would not book this cruise line again

Was thinking about booking a danube…

Was thinking about booking a danube river cruise but after reading these reviews I am now not going to. I notice none of these reviews have been answered by Scenic. That tells you something else. Pity because on their website the cruises looked good. Thank you everybody for your reviews

Dissapointed

Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest change boats 3 times because of this I missed the part I really wanted to see the Rine valley,we spent 5hours on a coach then another 4hour further down the river.

Very difficult company to deal with

Very difficult company to deal with. After two failed attempts at going on a cruise due to Covid. (nobodys fault). I was given an undertaking that I could have my cruise payments refunded at 30 June 2023. Some 2 years after the second cancelation. Good luck getting Scenic to honour that commitment, they just continue to make empty promises. Unfortunately I will have to take legal action against them to recover my money.

Meaningless guarantee

River cruise ran late. Scenic promised a partial refund under their "guarantee". Since January Scenic has concocted excuse after excuse to delay our refund. Be vary wary travelling with Scenic. We were loyal to Scenic, taking multiple river cruises and land tour, but not anymore. Prices remain premium, but quality and service are now bargain basement.

Scenic canceled the tour & held on to booking funds

After visiting Antartic in 2020 with Scenic, they canceled two other trips that year. Scenic decide to keep the tour payment in full for the first trip. Booking those canceled trips in 2022, Scenic canceled both tours within weeks of the departure dates, without reasons given. Now in june 2023, after months going on a year of refund requests, Scenic refunded the 2020 tour payment. Scenic kept the 2 years of earned interest on our money.

Scenic cannot be trusted

Have just been informed that our fully paid Europe River Cruise for July 2023 has been brought forward by two days! With flights and other travel arrangements locked in, this means either missing the first day or two of an 8 night cruise or paying a large sum to change flights at the second busiest time of the year. Scenic have “generously” offered to pay just half the cost of the changed flights leaving me well out of pocket and with a very poor opinion of this travel company. Are they on a downward spiral with their treatment of customers?

Do not deal with this company

Do not deal with this company. They do not offer 5 star experiences. It is impossible to contact anyone, phones and emails are not answered. Even a personal letter sent by recorded delivery to the chief executive has not been acknowledged. During our recent Danube cruise due to low water levels it was necessary to change ships. Unfortunately when we arrived on the second ship we found that we had been allocated a cabin of a lower grade. No one had the courtesy to advise us of this change and when we complained to the cruise director we were told that we would have to take the matter up with our travel agent when we returned home.

Date of experience : 23 June 2022

Yeah but no.

I understand that the company invokes disaster clauses to avoid giving refunds and then attempts to look like/to be good corporate citizens by offering credit vouchers. They claim those vouchers will be refunded if unused in December 2022. But the product we purchased (a Baltic Cruise) is not being offered again. We will be unable to use that voucher for the experience and know that right now. It’s a large amount of money to withhold.#600873

Very Poor Understanding of Circumstances...

we booked a river cruise to Vietnam/Cambodia for September 2020. Evergreen cancelled our trip due to the China virus and although presenting medical documentation to state we can not take the vaccine, Evergreen/Scenic are refusing to refund the monies we paid for this trip. Very poor Evergreen/Scenic..(Booking Ref. 670928). , Section 5. Cancellation, delays and changes to Your Itinerary. It clearly states at para 5.4 if Evergreen Tours (i.e.. Scenic Tours) delayed for more than 7 days FOR WHATEVER REASON, the customer may terminate the contract and has the option to request either a full refund or a credit towards future tours. Despite numerous attempts via email, Donna Willis (Guest and Corporate Affairs Manager) has FAILED to furnish a direct response to a number of questions I have put to her...

I have been trying to contact them for…

I have been trying to contact them for several days to make changes to a booking. Wait times are anywhere from 40 minutes to over an hour. They can’t answer questions and place you on hold. They have written and stated they would make contact on a day with an update and they don’t. This is beyond frustrating when you are charged a premium for the cruise. This companies customer service and engagement is nonexistent.

Jewels of Europe…

I recently did the Jewels of Europe tour on the Scenic Jewel which began in Amsterdam on 28th of July and brought my son and his family. Altogether there were 7 of us. I have also booked for 17 people December 2014 for the 7 night Christmas market tour. Please take this feedback in the manner it is intended and I hope it will be helpful for future planning. First of all the staff were absolutely amazing. Nothing was too much trouble and this helped make our trip very enjoyable. Now some areas that could be definitely improved. 1) The food for the evening meal was not good. I understand they have a small kitchen but there is very little variety and whenever we ordered the options of salmon, steak or chicken, they were always well over cooked and dry even when we asked for it to be rare or medium rare. 2) Bread rolls were so tiny and tasteless, Nice large bread rolls would be great 3) One day we had just been in beautiful German wine country where we all got a chair lift over miles and miles of vineyards. That evening we were offered Australian and American wine. I asked if it was possible to have wine from the region we had just visited, and they said sure, but this should have been standard practice and we should not have been offered Australian and American wine. 4) It would be nice to have table cloths at night. We were often tied up next to other boats and could see they had table cloths which made the meal more special 5) Portobellos was closed half the time meaning we only had one turn in there. Suggest opening every night as the meal quality was much better and that way everyone could get 2 opportunities to eat a higher quality meal 6) The machines to talk to listen to the tour guides were terrible. We spent 20 minutes of each tour trying to get them working In the end I just stayed close to the guide so I could hear what they were saying. My brother did same cruise 2 weeks before me and he agreed, Everyone on his trip had same problem. Even the tour guides said other companies use much better and more modern systems, so would be great to replace these. 7) Even though it is small, the massage/facial room is still charging top prices for a treatment but the ambiance was not good. This small space needs to be made a lot more relaxing and spa like. ( Im in the beauty training industry so this really bugged me as we work with small rooms and it is easy to do, good bed, battery candles etc, nice things on wall. 8) I also suggest a dress code for the evening meal, jacket for men, long pants, women well dressed. This raises the level.we were on the trip of a lifetime, and having people in thongs at dinner and shorts ( men and women) lowered the quality As I said, the staff were amazing. I could not fault them, but the suggestions above would be easy to implement and raise the professionalism and quality of Scenic experiences

3 star cruise for 5 star price avoid

Our booking experience was horrendous. Apparently Their website had been hacked making it impossible to contact anyone as all numbers we called just rang out. We did get in touch with someone after being on hold for over 3 hours. We booked our trip of a life time and we were very excited. We received our booking via email only to find our names spelt wrong so we spent hours trying to contact your booking department to get that changed. We received our invoice promptly we paid and then didn't receive a receipt for a week later and several emails and phone calls later. Not once did your staff apologizes for the delays just ignored our complaints. Very poor service We chose Scenic as they advertised 5 star cruising, top service and luxury. We didn't get that. On arriving at the airport we were a bit unsure where to go - Viking had staff at every gate and several at the meeting place (Amsterdam) we actually asked the Viking representative where the Scenic representative was ! We met up with other passengers and waited, our one representative turned up 30min late ! (with no apology) On boarding our boat -Crystal- was disappointing, she was old, tiered and smelt of sewage. this smell stayed around for 4 days and then the whole boats toilet and shower system went down for a few hours !! Spider webs, bugs, leaking showers, ripped seats, missing chess pieces - Not very luxurious. To get a drink at night was a drama it took at least 30 min to get served. To Scenic's credit the food was amazing. 24 hour butler service! Well we did get to meet our butler who introduced themselves to us when we boarded. We were ill two nights and decided to eat in our room. I rang our butler service to get our dinner delivered to our room only to be told that they where very busy and would get to us when they could, the second night we ordered again only to be told the same thing they where busy -I'm sorry what happen to 24 hour butler service to get you anything you need!! that night we only received one meal I rang to see where the other meal was only to be told very rudely that what I ordered wasn't on the menu - it was as I was looking at the menu on the TV - I was told that they would see what they could do - nothing arrived. To top of all off the cruise was cancelled due to low water But to Scenics credit they did refund us which we appreciate. I am writing this to let you know that we where looking forward this trip That I personally have dreamed of doing for years and we bitterly disappointed and I'm sorry I will not recommend Scenic to anyone thinking of doing a Europe river cruise We paid 5 star price for a 3 star cruise

So Disappointing, broke their word

From absolutely loving Scenic, in the past, to now being utterly disappointed in their untrustworthiness. Shame on Scenic. Our twice deferred trip finally went ahead, then before departure was curtailed due to inability to supply the tour extension content. We were encouraged to make our own accommodation arrangements for being stuck in a destination three more days than Scenic were able to accommodate us on the understanding we would be reimbursed by Scenic for the three days of hanging around. That was a joke. In the end, the reimbursement made, did not even cover part of one night of the hotel costs in the very hotel that they would have used could they have secured the booking. Money is owed to us and I doubt we will ever see it. We had this offer from Scenic in writing, which subsequently their staff choose to ignore. We were always willing to spend on on Scenic, booking Royal/Owners/Panorama cabins, This a back to back cruise and pre and post tour extensions. We shall not be availing ourselves the displeasure of Scenic again. Shame because we were thinking of booking Scenic Eclipse before this happened. So very disappointing. We shall take our money elsewhere now.

No Customer Care or Service at Scenic

We have not yet made it to the cruise. That’ll be in May 2023. Scenic took our deposit and were great to deal with. That’s where the good experience to date ended. We are doing other things while in Europe and need to make arrangements now. We need Scenic advice on flights for the cruise before we can make arrangements. I have called Scenic a number of times and waited at least an hour without being answered. I have tried their webchat, as suggested while waiting on the phone. No one is there to chat to. I have emailed a number of times and been advised that they are busy and will get back in 2-3 working days. Three weeks later I have heard nothing. We received a letter from their CEO explaining that Scenic has encountered problems in recent times. He apologised and promised things are improving. Clearly this is rubbish.

Major concern with Scenic’s actions

I have a major concern I would like to bring to your attention. My partner & I conducted a RAT test (which was negative) prior to departing Darwin on 20 June, on a Scenic Tour of Top End & Kimberley. Unfortunately, my partner was COVID positive by a RAT test when we reached Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel on 22/6. Once we advised the Tour Director, Mark of our circumstances he told a web of lies to everyone. 1). He told Management of the hotel that we had a family emergency and were leaving the tour to return home. 2). He told the remaining passengers on the bus, that we were leaving the tour because of a family emergency. 3). They then proceeded through NT & WA, with the indigenous communities being put at risk because I believe my partner caught COVID from someone on the bus. I have followed up with Scenic that they have complete disregard for everyone with these lies they are happy to tell. My concern is the fact when we left our room at the Mercure Crocodile Hotel, two young men then went inside to clean the room. We then sat in the hotels reception waiting for a lift back to Darwin for flight home as we were unable to get suitable accommodation to isolate. I’m angry that a “so called” reputable company can get away with these lies when we were completely honest. I believe you should be aware of this indiscretion by Scenic Tours.

Very disappointed with the Grand…

Very disappointed with the Grand Australia tour. (For UK guests on, Poor communication beforehand, things are changed because Australia has not fully re-started (according to the Tour manager) and we have missed out on some things. We’re very disappointed with this trip overall. It is not the luxury experience we’d expected. Very little is included once you’re on the tour, very few meals, slow porterage, very few trips/activities. With very few exceptions (Kangaroo Dundee, School of the Air and RFDS), it seems like the Free choices offered are almost the only trips. Lots of things require pre-booking independently and you need a good level of fitness to be able to join lots of the trips, as most need you to walk between 10-20 mins to join them, where you’ll be left in your own with people from other groups/independent travellers and be expected to find your way back to your hotel on you own. It seems like Scenic are cutting back, and paring things down to the minimum. We’re not as busy as I’d expect to be, and things, so far, seem to be badly timed so we waste time and reduce our chances of getting the most out of this beautiful country. Again, lots of people grumbling and several first-time guests say this will be their last. We’d booked to go on the Camel riding trip in Uluru. What we didn’t realise was that the camels are close to the resort. As the resort is 20km away, the view from the camels would be quite poor. I was able to swap to a dawn view of Uluru and had an informative morning, and a short walk. I could have taken the camel trek as we were back by 8.30. Apparently, camels cost 80AUD. Maybe that could have been thought about by Scenic. Those who had chosen the camel ride had thought they would go very close to this iconic sight - the highlight of the tour and, whilst they enjoyed the ride, didn’t get close to the site. But they did get a chance to go in the bus in the afternoon to get almost as close as the trek and dawn group managed to get. Again, maybe this could have been explained properly. The sunset experience was a disaster. No one arrived to set up our drinks and nibbles whilst we enjoyed the sunset. We were offered a drink with dinner to make up for it, but all felt this was insulting and we pushed for drinks with dinner (dinner is around 89AUD pp). It was insulting as Scenic say they offer unique experiences… and we stood by groups which included tours by Saga who thoroughly enjoyed the copious bottles of champagne brought by the same hotel group who were supposed to be organising our own celebration, and laughed at our discomfort. We certainly felt like the poor relations, despite paying over £2k pp more. In Alice Springs, Brownie’s bus always had lots of water - but we were otherwise expected to buy our own throughout the tour. Brownie was a far better guide than our own - far more informative and pleasant to listen to. Melbourne- Crowne Promenade Excellent room. No complementary bottles or water jugs in room. Fridge was full of products to buy (small bottle of water 5AUD). Coffee was decent, but tray not replenished. Nice dressing gown. TV dreadful - movies were all pay to view. Good breakfast. But - only given one free choice activity plus the Promenade dining. Don’t do Yarra River cruise as a free choice - it’s easy to do from the hotel during the free day. People loved the Penguin trip and I deeply regret missing it. To do the cruise independently, it would cost around 59AUS, whereas the trip to see the islands is much longer, is more difficult to do independently, and costs around 179AUD. The tour manager walked us down to the trips, but we had to make our own way back. Promenade dining - there’s a 95AUD allowance, which is almost impossible to dine without paying an additional amount. Cost cutting seems to reign supreme . No transfers are made for almost any of the trips (fine if you can walk 15- 20 mins easily) and find your own way back. We are not given tours of any of the places early on, so we can’t see much without finding out for ourselves. In far too many places, we miss so much because we’re not given a free walking tour or bus tour. In Melbourne, we had to pay an extra 60 or so AUD for a walking tour in the free day. This is not what we expected. Very few meals are included, and there seems to be problems booking places for restaurants. Descriptions of free choice trips aren’t always accurate. I do think Scenic could make a note about how long they last, the approximate start and end times, and if some options are easy to arrange for free time. It seems as if Scenic have cut back on activities and guests have to do a lot more for themselves (at extra cost). Now, this isn’t a problem for some, but others budget carefully to experience luxury for a few weeks of the year, and might not expect large additional expenses once on the trip. Many won’t go with Scenic again.

we have always had the best holidays with Scenic and today I rang on 2 different numbers to enquire about the New Zealand holiday and waited for over 1 hr on 2 different lines and had to eventually hang up, very disappointed.

France is a wonderful place to visit, so I hope the rest of your trip there is great. You could probably visit a lot of the places on your own without cruising. So have a lovely time what ever you do.

What is the line? Scenic Cruises

Name of ship? Scenic Eclipse

Passenger occupancy? 228 (200 in polar regions)

Itinerary? Halifax, Nova Scotia, to New York

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Scenic began in 1986 as Scenic Tours, an Aussie company operating coach tours. In 2005, Scenic entered the European riverboat market and in 2008, introduced its own posh riverboats—the first to sail on European waterways with outside balconies. With Scenic Eclipse ’s debut in 2019 as a “discovery yacht,” the brand drew a larger American audience to its river and ocean vessels. Passengers on board Scenic ships tend to be 55-plus, sophisticated travelers who want the best food, wine, accommodations, and service. The brand's devotees are eager to check out the slightly tweaked Scenic Eclipse II , which debuted in August 2023.

Tell us about the ship in general:

In 2019, the expedition cruise world was abuzz over the 228-passenger, all-suite Scenic Eclipse launch. This ultra-luxe polar ice-class ship resembles a yacht, yet still possesses all the right adventure toys, like helicopters, a submarine, Zodiacs, and kayaks. Oversized stabilizers assist with smoother sails and anchorless positioning keeps seafloors safe.

The vibes on board the Scenic Eclipse are sexier than other expedition ships: Think soft lighting, edgy furnishings, and many cozy corners for snuggling while sipping custom mixology cocktails. Modern art and eye-catching sculptures dot decks, adding extra panache. An almost one-to-one passenger-crew ratio delivers near-instantaneous service. So many amenities—like in-suite dining, alcohol, shore excursions, gratuities, ship transfers, and butler service—are included in cruise fares. Tom Göetter, the savvy corporate executive chef, oversees 10 complimentary dining options. I sailed with this top toque and his modern global cooking blew me away. (No wonder; turns out he was a Top Chef finalist in Germany, and appeared on the 20th anniversary Top Chef: World All-Stars .)

Who is onboard?

The group depends upon the itinerary. On more adventurous polar sails, well-heeled 30-, 40-, and 50-somethings prevail, eager to check off their bucket-lists. Tamer cultural itineraries may draw a 55-plus crowd. Count on interacting with more couples than groups of friends, a mix of well-traveled Americans, Europeans, and Aussies, gleefully pursuing the good life at sea.

Describe the cabins:

Scenic Eclipse offers 114 suites across five decks. I stayed in a deluxe verandah suite, which runs between 344 to 366 square feet. The king bed was comfortable and the pillow menu is a pampering touch. The décor, with clean modern lines and neutral hues, felt fresh. Shoutout to Scenic co-owner Karen Maroney for including Dyson hairdryers with numerous attachments, including a diffuser—a must for curly-haired cruisers like me. Ambient lighting provided modes for every mood.

The sofa and pouf by the marble table delivered enough chill space. My butler did all the right butler things, like bringing morning coffee (although I could use my Illy machine) and restocking my complimentary minibar with vodka.

Another suite plus was the unusual quietness; I didn’t hear any neighboring noise as can often happen on ships, even luxury ones. I spent much time on my balcony—so idyllic for soaking up views or ogling the sunset over flutes of bubbly.

The ship's Grand Deluxe Suites, the next highest level, deliver more space—up to 430 square feet. Spa Suites dramatically increase the luxury: the living rooms are larger and the double-size Philippe Starck bath design includes vitality mist showers with color-light therapy, and glass partitions that switch between clear and opaque. Plus, passengers receive a complimentary one-hour spa treatment and priority shore excursion selections, among various perks. Panorama and Grand Panorama Suites overlook the bow and are huge—between 1,130 and 1,184 square feet—and include such posh appointments as spacious terraces with sun loungers and priority for, well, everything. Owner’s Penthouse Suites run more than 2,000 square feet; count the spa day bed that transforms into a treatment table for a private experience, and a spa pool, among other amenities.

Tell us about the crew:

A one-to-one passenger-crew ratio ensures service excels. Butlers attend to all passengers, fetching cocktails, making dinner reservations, and handling just about every request, whether for onboard or ashore. I found my dark-suited (no tux) white-gloved butler appropriately formal. Overall, the crew—particularly servers—are relaxed and friendly, embracing a private yacht demeanor more than the stiffer one seen on traditional cruise or expedition ships. Kudos to the shore excursion staff, who dealt with changing weather conditions and the ability to board the submarine with aplomb.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Scenic Eclipse offers 10 complimentary dining choices, including 24-hour in-suite service. I was impressed with the modernness of the sophisticated cuisine and the quality ingredients.

I ate my way through most restaurants and determined Sushi@Koko’s as a favorite. Here, you hop on a bar stool or sit at a countertop overlooking the ocean and tuck into the freshest fish—sashimi like yellowtail, and sushi such as ebi (sweet shrimp). The adjacent Koko’s masters Asian fusion; don’t miss the Thai pumpkin coconut soup with grated ginger and lemongrass. The sunken seating and the chance to share multiple dishes with friends made for great fun and good eats.

Reservations are needed for Night Market@Koko’s, where just eight guests sit at a teppanyaki grill while a chef prepares night market-influenced plates with Asian, Indian, or Middle Eastern flavors. Sadly, this tiny eatery opened after I sailed. I can’t wait to try it.

Applause, also, to the Yacht Club, for casual breakfasts and lunches big on flavor and healthy ingredients. Since I’ve been onboard, the indoor pool was (rightfully) removed from the area, creating more lounging space, both inside and out. I often wandered into the all-day Azure Bar & Café for a macaron or barista-made espresso. Lumière, a contemporary and sophisticated French restaurant, also won my heart (and stomach). The onion soup with double oxtail wagyu beef consommé, and grilled duck breast with leg confit, are standouts.

How lovely to sit at a bar where someone pours 1 er (Michel Forge Brut NV) and Grand Cru Champagne (Autréau Blanc de Blancs NV). These are smaller house bubbly, rather than luxe ship’s usual big-house offerings. Servers also present luscious nibbles like fried oysters and caviar.

Main dining room Elements completely satisfied. Servers clad in black vests and black ties act attentive yet not intrusive, and the menu meanders between Italian dishes and American favorites like steak and seafood.

I’d be remiss to not dive deeper into the complimentary alcohol. The buzzy Whiskey Bar, with more than 130 bottles including 12-year-old Yamazaki and 14-year-old Balvenie, is a well-deserved passenger hangout. I already mentioned the of-the-moment Champagne bar. Restaurant wine lists also emphasize smaller vintners, with detailed bottle descriptions.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

Senses Spa is humungous: 5,920 square feet for indulging in treatments and staying fit in a fully equipped gym and yoga and Pilates studio. Expect indoor and outdoor vitality pools, Jacuzzis, women’s and men’s saunas, steam rooms and relaxation lounges, thermal loungers and experience showers, among wellness amenities. Note Japanese shiatsu and Ayurvedic massages among less typical therapies. I didn’t have a treatment but I did take a Tibetan Bowl sound healing session. I entered the room skeptical and emerged hooked. Lying on a mat and listening to the tones felt relaxing and invigorating all at once.

How about the activities and entertainment?

As Scenic Eclipse is an expedition ship, most activities revolve around outings off the vessel, via kayaks, paddleboards, E-bikes, water skis, Zodiacs, helicopters, and submarine. Onboard, passengers can soak in an outdoor Jacuzzi. The up to 20-member expedition team often give talks, and I did take in a lecture or two; the speakers were engaging.

Local entertainment may perform in the spacious theater, though I didn’t catch any shows. I did take an impressive cooking class in Scenic Epicure. While classes are not hands-on, you can learn more about the chef, carefully watch him work, and learn some clever hacks.

How was the experience for families?

Children 12 and up are welcome onboard. I didn’t see any on my sailing, but I imagine at this luxury level, they’re well-traveled and well-behaved. I’ve been told that while the ship doesn’t offer kids special activities, the crew showers them with special attention.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

My voyage sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to New York. Unfortunately, stormy weather ruled out water sports and the submarine. However, I went on fun land excursions, such as a Halifax walking tour that was spellbinding. Our charismatic local guide was incredibly well-versed in Halifax fact and lore—he even shared ghost stories that gave me goosebumps.

In Newport, Rhode Island, a guide led us through jaw-droppingly beautiful, insanely lavish Gilded Age mansions. We also visited Boston, where I explored solo as I know the city well. Such sails are typical East Coast fall foliage cruises, although most begin in Montreal or Quebec City and traverse between Canada and New York. You can score this itinerary on many ships, ranging from mass-market to boutique ultra-luxe lines.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Good to know that the ship provides 100% fresh air throughout the ship, including suites. With anchorless positioning, the seafloor is undisturbed. Newer emission technology and low-sulphur fuel are used.

Anything we missed?

The ship offers complimentary exclusive private dinners, dubbed Chef’s Table@Elements, by invitation only. I’m not sure how you score an invite (I’m guessing it’s for occupants of the priciest suites and other such VIPs), but I did manage to dine here with nine other guests once. The an 11-course degustation tasting is held in a private dining room off of Elements, where each dish is paired with wine. The head chef introduces each course, and as you dine, you see white-toque chefs slicing, dicing, searing, and plating through a glass window.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

I’d pretty much sail anywhere on Scenic Eclipse, even if the itinerary leaned more cultural than expedition. The ship is so stylish and the service and cuisine is superb.

Scenic - a name to forget

Scenic - they have so much to do if they ever want my custom again and it starts with customer service Windmills and Tulips Cruise April 2022. Not the the luxury that they advertised or we expected. Mechanical engine failure four days into the holiday. Average food. Hard working staff but lacked leadership. Poor communications. Was the Cruise Director just not up to the job or perhaps she had the unenviable job of being the mouthpiece of an almost uncontactable company who when they eventually surfaced had little to say and as yet have failed to honour what they did say. Once they have your money - you are on your own.

Superb Cruiseline

The staff on the Scenic Gems of the Danube cruise are the best we have ever experienced on a cruise. Attentive and so thoughtful. They attend to your every need with a smile. The food has been delicious and the chefs have to be commended on the quality of the food. The ship is superb and the suites delightful. The cruise and destinations have been fantastic. Highly recommended.

Went on Bordeaux cruise

Went on Bordeaux cruise. Terrible food One morning for example had a boiled egg served with fried bread which had been cooked in the chip fryer , raspberry trifle with one raspberry, barbecue food had been sitting in Bain Marie for hours All food grey , fish frozen and not even from France . Ran out of gin on second day, We paid a year in advance £9.500 for two only to find other people had only paid £1000 each . The response from Scenic was £100 voucher each for booking again . We had been twice with Scenic before and were delighted with the food. Obviously Scenic does not want to retain customer loyalty . The staff tried their best whilst working for a company that really doesn’t care

Don’t waste your time !!!!

Had a river cruise with Emerald in April 2022 that was excellent but had forgotten how bad the booking arrangements with Scenic were. So was about to try again for another cruise but 60 minutes of waiting for Scenic to answer the phone has put me off completely. They are a shower!

WHY DON'T THEY REALISE?

so very disappointed in Scenic, which i had, till now, thought of as a quality company. they've had most of the money owed to us since July 2019 (18 months) and said it'll be 8 weeks till we get reimbursed, despite it's a legal requirement to refund us within 2 weeks of them cancelling the trip. why don't they realise that it's their "today" actions that will impact on our future decisions to use them or not.

Our Return Flight is Cancelled but Can't Contact Scenic to Rearrange

We were advised last week that our return flight had been cancelled. I have been trying to contact Scenic for days to rearrange the flight. I have phoned repeatedly on multiple phone numbers, waited for long periods and often requested a call back. I have not received a call back and have not been able to talk to anyone. The customer service is appallingly bad. There is no specific customer service number to call. Obviously they are happy to take your money. After that they clearly don't care.

Trying to contact scenic is impossible

Trying to contact scenic is impossible. They do not answer their phones unless you phone bang on 9:00 am. I had to chase for my documentation which only arrived today 11th july and my cruise starts on Thursday 14th. Hoping that the service on board is better, but I am not holding my breath because of the reviews I have just read.

Scenic service is the best!

After two cruises with Scenic, my wife and I are already planning a third cruise. Our cruises on the Danube were great and we really enjoyed exploring Transylvania after the second cruise. Every detail has been carefully thought out to make the holiday most memorable. The service is second to none and the staff, from cruise director to cabin attendants are helpful and enthusiastic to make your holiday a success.

Worst vacation

First of all this was advertised as having beautiful scenery and an intimate experience.. We floated along a muddy river and the ports were poverished run down villages with nothing to do .. When we entered the boat we did NOT get the room upgrade we paid for .. The boat was full of over 70 year old people with mobility issues .. Advertisement said average age 55 ! The excursions were short and boring took longer to drive there then the actual excursions! Then everyday back to the boring boat .. The pool was actually a hot tub , the gym had 3 treadmills and 1 bike ..we were very bored ! The evening meals were awful ( frog legs ) no thanks and the alternate meals were burgers , a cheap quality steak and chicken which got really old after a few meals .. The chef was not accommodating until we emailed scenic then they had an attitude because of the complaints. In the evenings it was so bad corny cruise director jokes and music trivia from my great grandmothers era .. We made the decision to leave the boat on day 4 of a 10 day vacation . Huge waste of our money . Would never recommend this cruise through Boudreaux .. It wasn't beautiful it was boring !

Any problems and you deal with calll centre kids, first name only

We paid £7600 for river trip, cancelled due to COVID, “ Stuart” from scenic has continued to give my agent and me the runaround regarding my refund. I’m now in my 5th week of waiting and it’s been repetitively pointed out to me that I’ll probably wait at least 3 months, they are actually obliged to refund it in 14 days. It’s impossible to speak to anyone responsible,in accounts, with a surname. My travel agent has tried to be helpful .What happens if Scenic, or unfortunately, my Agent, goes into liquidation.

Scenic first timers and definately the last

It’s interesting to read the reviews here. They are all too familiar. We were on Scenic Crystal, Rhine and Moselle 26th July 2022. It was very clear, even at the start that we were likely to experience problems with water levels. You only had to read the news!! Travel to Amsterdam by Eurostar was excellent and short trip to ship. Food onboard- disappointing. Constant unpleasant smell in the cabin. Had to be put up in hotels for last three nights. Very comfortable but no inclusive drinks. Coaches everywhere. Trip home by TGV to Paris was great but then had to pull our suitcases over Paris streets for approx 1 mile in 30c temps to reach the minibus transport. Just made connection at Gare du Nord. Offered small amount of compensation shortly after return. This figure then increased and confirmation received that payment had been input to finance dept on 5th October. Despite many emails, we are still waiting and receiving a variety of lame excuses. Am interested in comments about small claims court.

Very disappointed with Scenic

Very disappointed with Scenic. After the Scenic Jade broke down on a recent cruise and we were transferred to a hotel we were promised we would get notification of compensation within three weeks of the cruise ending. That three weeks has passed - and so far nothing - at the very least I would have expected an email apologising and stating that it is being looked into - to just ignore it is just downright rude. Scenic used to be a company you could rely on but not anymore it seems.

HOLIDAY NIGHTMARE

HOLIDAY NIGHTMARE-Am just returning home from Scenic Amber Space Ship cruise on the Danube. Along with many other travellers have spent a week with no luggage just in the clothes we arrived with. Can’t get through to Scenic on any lines and no email response. No greeting at the airport not even on a passenger list to be picked up from airport. Cruise directors advised they can’t contact Scenic offices either. On board guides as you cruise don’t work as no coverage. Fine dining experience evening was very poor. We missed 2 ports and one day at the start of the cruise. For last 2 days docked by a derelict building, trailer park with cargo railway on other side. You may as well through your money down the sink - disgraceful. I wish they would just cancel the holidays rather than put anymore passengers through the experience we have endured.

We went on Scenic Diamond River Cruise to Bordeaux

We went on Emerald River Cruise on the Douro River in Portugal in 2022 and were so impressed that we decided to do another cruise in 2023. We have just returned from 11 days aboard the Scenic Diamond Cruise to Beautiful Bordeaux. 18--28 July 2023. The experience on the ship was 110%. We had 114 passengers with approx 30 crew. It is pretty obvious that the whole Team on board thoroughly enjoy working together to make the service given to passengers , of the highest order. The facilities on board are unlimited and the daily information given out by the Cruise Director (Yvonne) every evening were extremely helpful. Ryan covered much of the evening entertainment and daily tour arrangements with very accomplished Guides, Morgan & Natalie. Our only disappointment was the facilities at the French Railway Stations, but this is obviously out of the hands of Scenic. We are already planning our River Cruise with Scenic next year. Laurie Day.

A very stressful holiday

A very stressful holiday. We will never travel with Scenic again. Their customer service is appalling - they don’t answer the phone or emails, and blame an IT problem in February. To be fair, the Scenic Jade was a lovely ship, with delightful staff, but rather disappointing food. The excursions were interesting, especially Keukenhof and Deltaworks. However, on day 5 the engine failed and we were transferred to a hotel. My impression is that the staff are struggling to keep things going, but that there is something seriously wrong at the top. We asked other passengers, and even regulars said they would never go with Scenic again after this experience.

Live in hope of contacting someone

We are booked on a cruise in July and need to speak to someone. We have tried daily this week, and today tried 3 different numbers. The main one left us waiting for one hour and 9 minutes then the phone battery ran out. Just tried another number and after 30 minutes lost patience, and cannot get into my account to alter the error as they are”working on it!” How do you get a person to talk to?? Today just rang Leger tours and they apologised for keeping me waiting for 5 minutes. Pull you finger out and give us a 5star booking service. Had a wonderful holiday in the past with Scenic to Australia. Reading the reports of other travellers we live in hope that the cruise is not cancelled and meets with our expectations.

Please don’t book with this company.

Please don’t book with this company. They cancelled our return transport and cannot explain why. They blamed the car company Addison Lee but they confirm they have an e mail from scenic cancelling. They did not provide gluten free food. If you have a severe food allergy please don’t go with them. They left us for 6 hours at a Swiss airport. We complained but they just blame everyone but themselves. Would never travel with them again

The best cruise ever

Just back from 8 day Seine/Normandy river cruise. We have done many ocean cruises before but this was our first river cruise and, wow, it was amazing. From booking to disembarkation everything exceeded our expectations. Service was first class and 'no' just wasn't in the staff's vocabulary. We loved all the trips and there was plenty of time to do our own thing afterwards. We met some fabulous guests and had such fun. We won't be going on the big ocean cruises again and have booked another river cruise already - well done Scenic!

Review for a Europe - River Cruise Cruise on Scenic Sapphire

Having travelled by car throughout France for over 35 years and visited the places on the tour, this cruise gave us a totally different experience of places we thought we knew. For example the Popes Palace concert and dinner was fabulous and just for us. The city/town/places of interest tours with such knowledgeable guides took us to areas we would never have found. Absolutely brilliant. We ... Read More

We have cruised with Scenic several times over the years and our views maybe influenced by better times. That said we thoroughly enjoyed this trip but there were definite signs of "economising" and unless they careful they will just become one of the pack. Pros - Service was generally good although at times restaurant staff showed signs of inexperience. The onboard entertainment was excellent ... Read More

Not 5 Star We took a chance on Scenic Luxury Cruises for The Spectacular South of France tour because they promoted themselves as an all-inclusive, 5-star, luxury cruise line. The ports were ok, but it seems like there should have been some nicer villages to dock at along the way. We had one included tour per port. The tours were mostly disappointing. For example, the Truffle Farm did not ... Read More

This is a complaint against Scenic Cruise Lines for making false statements that customers are financially protected by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) which has members throughout the world. Concerns about Scenic from a US person

By Aapreciate , January 17, 2019 in River Cruising

Recommended Posts

Cool Cruiser

Hi, we are currently booked on a two-week Scenic river cruise in the fall.  I've read with some concerns the Scenic reviews posted on this site, particularly with regards to the Danube accommodations that all riverboats had to make due to river levels last year.  Between their apparently not notifying US passengers of the river problems (though they did notify British and Australian), the universal complaints about food quality and temperature, the really midlevel pre- and post-hotels that they are now using (and just check out the complaints at TripAdvisor from Scenic passengers in particular about the Doubletree Amsterdam), and their discontinuing their page discussing river levels at all, I have developed a real concern about taking any trip with them as a US citizen (and I'm going with my 81-year old mom so things need to go as well as possible.  She is fit, it's just that I want her to have a great time).

Can anyone offer me any reassurances about Scenic in Europe?  I note that several years ago they announced that they were going "upscale": does that still seem to be true?  I don't want to be on a boat for two weeks where all the corners are being cut, which is my current concern.  (I don't mean to sound pretentious but the trip is costly and I'd rather change now than face two weeks of disappointment.)

Thanks in advance and please don't flame me.  We don't get to cruise every year so this trip is a BIG DEAL. I just am trying to avoid disappointment.

In addition to the complaints this year, Scenic had a major customer service failure a few years ago that led to a class action suit in Australia (that Scenic lost). Recently they had another brouhaha when the shipyard that was building their new luxury yacht Eclipse went bankrupt. They couldn’t control that, and even started paying the workers building their ship directly — but the way they handled the customers on the ever-lengthening series of canceled cruises caused an uproar on the Luxury forum here on CC. So I too would be wary of them regarding any far-future booking.

Hi, I feel a little the same as you, as we are booked for a one week cruise in October.  I have tossed up cancelling, but don't want to lose the $2000 AUD deposit!

I have done a heap of reading on Scenic, both on here, on Tripadvisor and on various Facebook groups.  While they don't seem to have handled the low water (and previous high water) issues well, neither it seems did many of the other companies.

It seems that when things go well, which they obviously do most of the time, then the reviews are extremely good.

I booked for us because my parents have done four trips with them.  They totally rave over everything and have assured me that the food is excellent.  I see no reason for them to make that up so I am ignoring the food comments.

I am in Australia, and one thing that I have noticed is that most of the poor food comments come from America.  I am not sure that this isn't a cultural issue - I know that when we visit the States I rarely like the food, it just doesn't seem as good as we have here (sorry!).  The only places I have enjoyed most food in the US have been Boston and San Franciso, and they are smaller cities, much more like Melbourne, where I live.

It stands to reason that it is possible that Americans and Australians may not have the same food tastes, so maybe that is part of the poor reviews.

I am not sure what sort of deposit structure you had, because it seems that each country is treated differently, but if, like us, your deposit was substantial, it becomes very costly to cancel.  My plan is to watch and read very closely and if things with the water levels occur again, I will invoke my plan b which is is already organised.  This means that I will pretty well follow the Rhine but by train.  I already have hotels chosen in the towns that we will stay in so it will be very easy to organise.  I will worry about refunds then once I get home.

I do hope that things go well for you, and for us, and feel confident, strangely, that they will next year.

Sunday golf

We have cruised with Senic twice. On both cruises the staff were excellent, probably better in 2018 and the arrangements faultless. The problem last year was the quality of the food and the scrum to get a table in the restaurant especially at dinner. Would we use Scenic again ? More likely Crystal.

10 hours ago, djh1959 said: Hi, I feel a little the same as you, as we are booked for a one week cruise in October.

Thanks for your response.  Interesting to consider the food complaints as driven by cultural differences.  I'm originally from San Francisco area so maybe I wouldn't be as offended?  Certainly  the poster immediately below you echoed my worries based on their experience.

What Facebook groups do you belong to for river cruising?  I would love to read more.

We also put down $2500 so it is a huge deal to switch.  Could consider Crystal during September but it's more than $20k MORE which is hard to even believe.  So we're looking at Tauck in October but then there's the worry about the Rhine levels being even more difficult.

Moral of the whole story seems to be river cruising has a much bigger delta on satisfaction and river levels, which are responsible for part of that swing, are just not predictable.  Wonder if we would be better to book in April/May in Europe, generally?

Anyway, thanks again.

We’re booked on Scenic in October Amsterdam to Basel. Our first cruise was Budapest to Nuremberg in August of 2015. We had a great time, enjoying the accommodations, service, food and fellow passengers. Low water forced the cruise to end in Vilshofen but that didn’t bother us much. We just rented a car for our post-cruise travel in Passau instead of Nuremberg.

We we are of course nervous about water levels and how Scenic will handle any disruptions. My impression from reading the forums since 2014 is that Scenic’s handling of water level issues is evolving. In 2013 they were pretty terrible responding to high water. In 2015 they responded well to low water with ship swaps. Last Year they couldn’t always swap because the water was too low in too many places.

Some posters were reasonably satisfied with how Scenic dealt with last year’s low water while others were completely dissatisfied. The question for us is how they apply any lessons learned in 2018 if levels are low again this year. We intend to hope for the best while working on Plan B.

We we live in the US and understand we are dealing with an Australian company. We’ve received good service so far from Scenic through our TA. However as we approach embarkation day we expect poor communication from Scenic and plan to get information about river levels and Scenic’s response from CC. As notamermaid has said, Rhine levels depend on rainfall late in the season. If there is any chance of rain most cruise lines keep mum about the risk. It’s not just a Scenic thing.

I haven’t checked the Scenic Eclipse thread lately but last time I did it appeared that they are handling the cancellations due to construction delays better as time goes by. Many of the early complaints seemed to be based on impatience.

  • 3 weeks later...

I wouldn't fret too much about the reviews you've seen (and I'm from the US). We were on Scenic this past fall, and were impacted by low water--not as much as some, but still a real impact. That said, we have already booked a 2020 cruise, and are greatly looking forward to it. I agree that Scenic was very parsimonious with information regarding water levels and contingency plans, which I found to be extremely frustrating. But reading the boards here, it seems like all of my complaints on that score apply to most/all of the cruise companies--almost nobody got straight answers from a cruise company prior to leaving on their trips. Aside from that, we loved the trip. I had no complaints at all about the food. I know some have talked about a "scrum" to get tables, but that wasn't my experience at all, and my wife and I were always able to get a two-top table, and found the food to be quite good. The staff were absolutely amazing, across the board. My wife developed some medical issues during the cruise, and the staff were all quite solicitous about making sure that accommodations were made. (Admittedly, we're quite self-sufficient, and they mostly didn't need to do much, but there were a few occasions where they went above and beyond to make sure that my wife had an excellent time.) I can't comment on pre- or post- hotels, because we do all our own travel arrangements. But we absolutely loved the ships, the food, the staff, and the Tailormade devices--and the low-key all-inclusiveness. We had no hesitation booking again for 2020, and did it just as soon as the itinerary we wanted became available.

Maybe this will get deleted but River Cruise Adviser did a comparison on how companies coped with the water levels and if my memory is correct Scenic scored extremely well. We will be travelling with Scenic for the eighth time this year yes they are not the best with the communication side of things but if you contact them you invariably get an answer really quickly. Enjoy your cruising CA

I went on Scenic 2 times.  First was Aug of 2017 Amsterdam to Budapest and the 2nd I took my folks (85 and 91) Bucharest to Budapest.  I can not rave enough about the service food ship EVERYTHING.  We had an amazing trip with them and we are happy we did not go with Viking.  Heard alot of people with complaints and the "extra charges" they all incurred.   We would not hesitate to travel with them again.  Nice age mix and we loved the bikes :)

Just took Scenic’s Mekong River cruise from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City in January.  Extremely satisfied with the ship, crew, service, itinerary, and everything else.  Looking to book an expedition cruise with Scenic when the new schedule comes out in a few months.

We are from US, and have no issues regarding booking and communication.  No need to anticipate/worry possible problems and stress out ourselves.

We have done ocean and river with Viking.  Like both operators.  We choose based on itinerary.

Viking’s ability to swap ships in the Budapest to Amsterdam route is a plus.

Traveled with Scenic August 2016, Budapest to Nuremberg. No problems with pre-cruise hotel, we were booked into Budapest Marriott and were fortunate enough to be there on St Steven's holiday.  Fireworks, street vendors, over 1 million people outside. Cruise went without a hitch, food was fantastic, service was terrific. Bus drivers were friendly and attentive. Luggage got wet before boarding, Scenic dried everything in the suitcase at no charge. Asked to have some clothing laundered as we neared end of cruise and had a total bill of 26.00 Euro when we disembarked. I would travel with them again any day.

Wanted to come back and say that while we had a wonderful time with our family, I will not choose Scenic again.

The crew was amazing and fun, but beyond that I found the food and alcohol to be sub-standard.  The itinerary often minimized port time (to be fair, it was a scrum getting down the rivers, waaaaay too many ships these days.  The experience has certainly changed) and while some of the guides were good, many were not.

We really ended up disliking the food and ate offship as much as we could.

Could not disagree more. Food was local or you could opt for standard meals. Alcohol had a menu to choose from at no additional cost. There was no steak house on board so I am not sure what you opted for off ship

Can I ask what Scenic ship you were on and where you went?

Hi aapreciate Kathy.

i have just completed my 2nd Buda to Amsterdam cruise with scenic. They were exactly 5 years apart. Hand on heart I could not say that the service levels or food had deteriorated in that time. The older ships had been upgraded to a comparable level to the really new ships. Obviously cabin sizes can’t be increased but they did a good job.

food is subjective on any cruise and from person to person. But in my experience on the current cruise, we met couples from Dallas, New York, Vancouver, Toronto and we did not hear one word of complaint against  the food. The quandary was which main meal to have. In a few occasions we had an additional main to share with the table to try.  That request was met with of course you can.

we had to do a ship swap due to water levels, clearly not Scenic’s fault. It was handled extremely well and seamlessly. Both ships swap relevant information about the passengers, dietary requirement, spa bookings etc so it was just like nothing had changed, except the staffs faces. Lol. The cruise director will always stay with the original passengers to keep a familiar face on board.

If any corners were being cut, I did not see it. And I am the type to discuss concerns with the hotel manager.

I read on this thread that someone said alcohol was sub standard. Can’t work that statement out or why it was. There was virtually every type of booze on board. - not scenic home brand. Lol.  Wines from many countries available. Moët available during breakfast if you wish.

Btw, we just booked scenic again for a Mekong river cruise.

relax, you will have a great time. Happy to answers and questions you may have.

cheers mark.

We were on the Jewel from Amsterdam to Budapest. We had booked on the Jade but the water levels were so tight that only the Jewel could get through.

We are American. The ship was full, with 166 guests of whom 110 were Australian. Most were nice but we did get the comment that it was too bad Scenic had started advertising in the US as there was now an onslaught of Americans. Did not make us feel very welcome. But that’s not Scenic’s fault.

My other major complaint is the lack of hand sanitizer protection and the resulting consequence that EVERYONE got sick. There were four sanitizer stations on board and no one used them. Buffet implements were therefore major germ vectors. Ugh.

Kris was the best Butler I have ever had and the crew overall was great. But never again Scenic for me.

I found the alcohol extremely sub standard. We were in the Royal suite so we got the fancy red wine. We looked it up - $11.99 a bottle. The whiskey selection was ridiculous. Jim Beam?  Really?  Yes they serve Moët but ONLY at breakfast because no one drinks it then. You can’t get it any other time, I asked. And all the mixers were Schweppes. Nothing nicer.

The food quality was equally mid-market. All the salmon was farmed. Limited fresh fruits and veggies with nothing ever light ot organic. And much of the food was cold, it was a consistent pattern. Room service food was even less warm. Just not a luxury experience at all.

As I said food is subjective so I make no direct comment on that.  https://www.scenic.com.au/-/media/scenic/australia-old/content-pages/river-cruises/dining/jasper-opal-amber-bar-menu-2017.pdf

I can say you are being unkind about drinks selections on offer, I have attached a link

but if this link opens it shows the booze available,  but if not then it is available on the scenic website.

Hi aapreciate, Just realised this is your original  from January 🤦‍♂️ 😂 and you are giving feedback 6 months later. Could not work out. Now it makes sense. 😁

Aapreciate in eight Scenic cruises we have never had the experiences that you seem to have had. I may seem a little rude here but have you traveled extensively? Have you traveled in company with other nationalities before? I’m sorry you seem to have had a less than happy experience. We as a family are off to California next year basically from Disney to the big trees to Monterey to San Fransisco I most certainly hope the Americans we meet are as friendly as those we have met in the past  and bot a jaded as you seem to be. There was an alcohol MENU in the lounge.  Our first night onboard I asked for a flight of the different Scotchs offered, there were 7 if I remember correctly. I settled on Glenmorangie and asked for a full glass each time I ordered, the staff came through and would hand me a full glass as I entered the lounge.  I think you might have shortchanged yourself.

We are leaving this evening for Amsterdam, and boarding Scenic Pearl on Monday for the Rhine Highlights cruise.  I am very interested in how the food and booze will be, but I am pretty confident.  From reading many posts here, on other forums and on Facebook, most people rate it very highly but there are odd people who don't, as someone else said food is very subjective.

I have read the drinks menu and it is extremely comprehensive.  I really only drink wine with an occasional cocktail, so I will report back on the quality of the red wines - we are very fussy about them.  As for champagne, I did notice that it was only available at breakfast, but other sparklings are available in the evening.  I will just make a point of having one for breakfast each day - I am on holidays and certainly not driving lol.

One of the above posts commented on being in a Royal Suite so therefore getting better wine.  We are only in a Junior Suite on the top deck, not a Royal, but nothing I have been told or read says that the wine is any different.

the royal suites get a bit extra in the bar fridge. French champagne and French wine.

i don’t think the junior suites get that. But all wine on board is available to all cabin classes whenever you want one. Except the above.

you will be impressed from the moment you board. So jealous could do it again in a heart beat.

Hi All, don’t forget whatever cabin or deck Scenic says you can ask for your mini bar to be stocked with your choice of beverages, they try their hardest within the constraints of the smaller sizes available. You can also ask your butler to serve the drink you prefer in your cabin. At lunch or dinner if your not sure of the wines selected to go with that meal ask to look at the wine list and dare I say it work your way through it. One thing to note although Scenic is an Australian company you rarely get new world wines. Most of the wine tasting we have been on have been excellent and surprisingly some of the French included a few exceedingly good or potentially good vintages. On our memorable Boudreaux cruise our group consisting of Australians, Canadians, New Zealander’s and Brits drunk the bar dry of Laguvulin now there’s a nice whisky. ( no Americans on that cruise). On our south of France cruise this year the chef and restaurant manager did a double act before dinner with explanation of the menus and wine recommendations, interesting. Enjoy cruising. CA

This is an Australian cruise company sailing in European waters, your comments show me you have not travelled extensively. Looking at the drinks menu, the selection of Whiskies  was excellent, 11 Scotch  (including Glenmorangie Single Malt and Macallan 10y Single Malt), 5 North American and an Irish. Very good beer selection. Moet is available for a fee anytime.

Quote: "And all the mixers were Schweppes. Nothing nicer."

Schepps is a very good brand of Mixers both in Europe and Australia, with a very long tradtion .

Quote: "All the salmon was farmed"

Did you ask the salmon where they came from? Good for Scenic, for supplying sustainable food on their menus.

I would have loved to be on a ship withn 110 Aussies (they are one of the most friendliest people I have ever met. The only thing is never to mention "The Ashes".

The following is not intended at American bashing, its just observations that I have seen occassionally. These posts remind me of situations I have seen that I call the "American Bubble". On European cruises I have been on I have seen American passengers at Guest Relation saying "We get that on American cruise lines" , "Where's the Lobster", "Why so much pasta - it's an Italian Ship", "That's not done on an Amerian cruise ship".

These passengers, want to grab a couple of hours of European culture and then go back onboard to their "American Bubble".

I have the 🍻 🍻 ready to douse any flames.
